  • That’s the reward for the effort, Merry. And doesn’t it feel good? 😊😊

Hi, everyone! I’m back from our trip to Bath and delight to find I’m just half a pound up! This is after enjoying the meals and wine with sensible choices – most importantly- two meals a day.

Re the bra problems, I’ve been lucky in that my weight loss has been waist and legs in the most part. I’ve coped with tightening up, never been well-endowed so I’m very happy.

Well done Pollypenny! Enjoyed yourself and stayed within range! πŸ˜„

I’ve decided I’m going bra shopping with a new perspective a la Fasts’s insights. πŸ‘™

I love good undies and good perfume!

Pollypenny – wish I’d remembered you were going to Bath, as the bra wondereoman is in Keynsham, not a million miles away. I don’t have shares, but anyone who wants the address m I’ll gladly supply.

Oh, thanks, Fast, but I’ve never needed a bra wonder-woman!

We’re out again tonight, but would really like a bit of normality and staying in. There’s some friends that we haven’t seen for a while going, though, so better to catch up with them than TV.

Hope everyone has had a good weekend. We had a lovely meal on Friday, a shared starter and I didn’t finish my main course, no pudding either.

Yesterday, we had a scratch curry from fridge and stock cupboard, loosely based on Mimi’s chickpea recipe. Delicious and leftovers today. Husband made himself a chilli, but far too much, so some frozen and left overs for him tomorrow.

Not done much. Last bit of work tomorrow, so I’ll have to get moving with a duster and Dyson.

    Hi Polly
I’m glad order is returning for you. We have the opposite. One half of the house has to have the carpet relayed (it’s bumping up), so we have been unpacking all movable furniture. We have books and crockery stacked everywhere. It’s staggering how many dead bugs are behind the furniture!
Talking of chilli…I use it most days, but last night, after chopping one, I didn’t wash my hand before I picked up a raw carrotto nibble. My mouth felt like Mick Jagger’s for hours πŸ˜—
Too much good food during the weekend, but excellent motivation for today’s fast. P

P, I feel for you! I use chilli most days too, but am now very mindful since I’ve started wearing contact lenses!

I made some chilli jam with our homegrown chillis last weekend. Although I must admit I’m finding it hard not to think of it as 1kg sugar, 300g chillis, 600ml vinegar…

I’ve eaten well this weekend too, including some homemade biscuits. But then I ended last week lighter then I’d started it…without fasting. So guilt free poison, wey hey πŸ˜€

Funny isn’t it Happy? Although our “overeating” sessions are probably similar to what some people called “fast day eating”! How things have changed.
I’ve been ‘indulging’ in a teaspoon a day of delicious honey a friend made (well, his bees did!) Feels like a very guilty pleasure even though only 21 cal, it is still insulin inducing. But SO good πŸ˜‰

Hi all – glad everyone is doing so well – congratulations

I’ve had a difficult week, full of crazy carb cravings. Can’t decide whether they’re due to sudden onset of colder weather, body’s delayed reaction to summer’s surgery, or just sheer greed after a couple of baking days – but genuinely rare for me these days, so obviously something has tipped the balance. (Perhaps I could blame the trauma of being told by the nurse administering my shingles jab that ‘there’s not much meat on here to stick a needle into!’?). Whichever it is, I’m (just) still within acceptable weight range, but at the top end, so it needs to change, before unusual behaviour turns back into bad habits and real damage gets done. Wish I could identify the cause, but I might just have to write it off as one of those oddities – a re-feed day gone rogue! – and rise above it… Travelling tomorrow and Tuesday, so good opportunity to fast – change of scene and change of mood seem often to go together. Wish me luck, and have a good week, everyone. I’ll try to report back that I’m back to the lower end of my range by the end of it.

As long as the needle didn’t snap as it hit the bone, Fast. 😣
We’ve had very unusual fluctuations in temperature over the last week (32 on Monday, plummetting with icy winds to 9 Tuesday night, 30 yesterday and 23 all night!! Predicted cool and raining today.) During these days, I was staggered how hungry I suddenly was on the cold days and how little I ate on the warm and hot ones. As I’ve said before, we skinny folk need to be mindful of this and ensure we keep extra layers on to preempt cold weather hunger, Have a good trip. P

Thanks, P. Shall take an extra sweater and leave the shortbread at home! Enjoy your summer. X

If summer ever actually stays…fans last night, the fire the night before. Crazy! We’d normally be swimming every day by now. πŸ™„ I feel like I’m back in the UK!

Nah, stay put: not that we wouldn’t love your company, but the uk ‘s a pretty miserable place to be at the moment. (Hey perhaps that explains my carb longings? πŸͺπŸͺ🍫🍫🍬. Right : change the picture – πŸπŸŠπŸŒΆπŸ’πŸ†πŸ“πŸ‘πŸπŸπŸ!!)

Fast, I think I’m proving my theory today. Temp dropped from 23 overnight to 12 at midday and I am REALLY struggling with my Monday fast 😐
1 hour more and I’ll HAVE to eat. (6:15pm) P

Good Morning, so good to read all your stories, and it seems all are doing great.

Please tell me how to make eggplant that it be Low-Calory, have to make it today and my recipe is saturated with oil.

Fast, I find that a banana (and half glass of milk) helps for those carb cravings.

Purple the Natural Honey has so many healing agencies that its Calories does not matter. Did you know that it can lower your Temperature and is a pain stiller? Just thought its interesting stuff.

Had a Fast day Saturday and again Today.

    Good luck to all.

And it’s DELICIOUS honey 😊 Really good stirred into my homemade kefir.
I don’t cook eggplant on fast days. Sorry. I’m hanging out for a couple of stuffed mushrooms and salad.P

There’s a couple of lovely aubergine recipes in Mimi’s book, one a curry,,the other aubergine slices rolled around couscous, I think. I use it often, just bumped in the oven after a spray of light oil or with oil, lemon and balsamic vinegar.

Fast, you’re not the only one wondering about coping in the cold weather, when we’re tempted to turn comfort food. I noticed that I haven’t done an interesting crunchy salad for a while. Will do one today.

Keep going, P, you can do it – in fact have probably already done it by now!

Thanks for encouragement, everyone; I think the worst is over. Just got to get back on healthy track now.

Satuatrd now …and lit the fire! Brrrrr…

Had a really successful fast – until about 4.30, when hijacked by apple pie and Italian gelato in Russell Square gardens… whoops! Probably still under tdee, having fasted till then, but certainly no longer a FD – what is the matter with this idiot woman?? Shall do a proper one tomorrow (and my usual semi one on Thursday will definitely be a full fast this week) just to be sure. Less about weight now than refusal to let old habits gain re-ascendancy….
Left DH at home, with youngest DS coming to stay/supervise/spend male bonding time at ‘Magnificent 7’ remake. They’ve just texted photos of themselves eating burgers and chips, so I guess a rescheduled fast day will be beneficial all round.

Just when you think you’ve got it sussed…..complacency pounces! What was that about eternal vigilance??

Be kind to yourself Fast. You’ve had a pretty torrid summer and come out the other end. If you’d totally dropped your bundle and gained 10kg, you could have started flaying yourself. That’s not the case. Your body is still in recovery. Listen to it when it needs the occassional apple pie and gelato. There must have been some necessary trace elements on it.😊
My fast wobbled in the late afternoon too…corn thins and vegemite was my choice over an offer of a wine. I survived on this and a generous fast dinner. Good lower weight this morning. Keep happy guys. P

My justification precisely, P. Thank you! And tomorrow is another day….

Well done to you, too – vegemite is such an irresistible temptation, no??

It’s the salt, Fast. We Aussies need it. Totally addictive 😊😊

I’m wobbling a bit, too. Cannot eat anywhere near my TDEE, but having difficulty in doing below 700. I made a lovely salad yesterday with the dhal recipe and 1oz of feta. Then a yoghurt.

I’d had bran flakes at 1pm, with a banana. Before I turn round – 700 cals.

I don’t want to lose anymore though, so see how it goes. Himself has a stone to go.

And I agree with PVE, Fast, treating yourself occasionally is fine. I think having your favourite, whatever it is, in a restaurant is better than making it at home, as the portion will be controlled. If I made custard I’d have almost the whole pint myself. Greedy pig, but it’s irresistible.

    Polly,

A lot of my maintenance fasts come in closer to 600-800 cals, but still seem to do the trick, perhaps because I also keep carbs relatively low.

I’m not sure I could manage a pint of custard, but I know what you mean! I had started buying a large pot of yoghurt because it’s cheaper than buying serving sized pots…or at least that was the theory! I found I was going back for another spoonful ‘because I probably didn’t take the full serving to begin with…’. Suffice it to say, I’m back on small pots again now since I can’t be trusted!

How long have you been maintaining, Happy?

I am low carb now, too. Potatoes and good bread were my downfall, but I have stopped the habit. We have a stock of spuds, unused. I will have a baked potato today with the rest of the salad.

Fast, Purple is right, no point in beating yourself up, tomorrow is another day and any day of the week can be a FD!πŸ˜„ Good luck with the next one!

Interesting point you make Happy as I have always been afraid to eat above 400 calories on a FD thinking I would sabotage the whole day. Maybe I can allow myself some leeway when I am really struggling on a FD. I never have carbs on a FD either.

Purple, we are freezing over here! Heaven knows when we will ever get Spring. I’ve just had a week in Brisbane with the family where it was low 20’s which was a nice reprieve but made it even harder coming back to 17 degrees!

    Hi Polly,

I reached my goal in April 2014, then dropped another 3kg by the June, and have been pretty much the same weight +/- 1kg since then.

    Carol,

Sometimes now as well I just do a 24 hour fast and then eat normalish. So long as the carbs are low it seems to work for maintenance. If I’ve over indulged though and need to drop a bit I have to get a bit stricter.

    Hi Pol, Carol and H.
That’s my experience too Happy….both the weight and maintenance method. I often do a 24 hour fast, followed by a low carb, but not tiny, meal. I only have to be super strict if my weight has crept up.
We are living organisms, Polly, so our weight and shape is never static. Keeps us on our toes. ☺
Busy day ahead, headache and sore throat. Curse this changeable weather! 🀐 P

Purple and Happy, that’s reassuring. For some reason, my alimentary canal has been very sluggish for for a couple of days, but I still lost a pound! I suppose I could lose a couple but I don’t want a repeat of the last time when I couldn’t stop losing.

It’s hard to believe that it was 20 years ago! I thought I was the bees knees in my size 8-10s, but when I look at photographs it’s horrifying. My 50th urgh! Six months away from 70, so I just want to look trim, I think.

I’ve been surprised to find myself constipated again. I thought my system had got used to things and plenty of pulses, too.

    Interesting Happy and Purple, Thankyou.

You CAN be slim again Polly!
Re the constipation, up your fluid intake, especially on fast days and if you do like Happy and I do and skip breakfast, have it twice a week to get the system going. Coffee in the morning (even blak) can help too.
    Dr P 😊😊

I have three coffees most mornings. I was wondering if I had accidentally drunk less water. Of course, on the Bath trip I had had breakfast and back to routine at home, none. So it could be that.

Not eating until about 1pm is my strategy. I think a more careful fluid intake needed now.

Very strange week. On Wednesday we had a meal at Prezzo, with a free bottle of Prosecco to celebrate my ‘half birthday’. On Thursday, my sister treated us to lunch in return for loads of wood, then it was wine tasting with cheese in the evening. An ice cream at the RSC cinema showing of King Lear last night.

And I’ve still lost another pound! It’s got to be appetite control, stopping when satisfied however delicious the dish. I didn’t finish a single thing and I’m not mad on cheese, apart from in dishes, so I just had enough to be polite.

The production of ‘Lear’ was superb, by the way. This live transmission to cinemas is better than going to the theatre, you’re closer.

Hope everyone is well and you’re getting some sun down under, especially Carol who’s been freezing.

    Hi Polly,

I experienced similar when I first reached goal, dropping another 3kg before I worked out how to stop losing. After a lifetime of mostly being a bit on the heavy side, and finding it easier to gain weight than lose, I did wonder whether I might be ill!

The cinema showing sounds interesting, I’d not heard of that, but I can see your point about a better view, although do you think you lose something in atmosphere/ experience?

I’m having a very slow start to the day, still in bed! I woke at 5.30 with stomach ache, spent a good while in the bathroom wondering if I was going to be ill, took paracetamol at 8, and it’s just subsiding πŸ™ Not sure if it’s a bug or food poisoning. Might be an impromptu fast day though… Being a worker still I really resent losing some of my precious ‘life’ time! Although I guess my employer would rather I was sick in my own time…

Poor Happy. Ghastly losing one of your free days. Hope you recover quickly.
Polly, I’ve had a similar festive week and am still the same low weight. I think we learn to eat mindfully, even when celebrating! Well done. P

Sorry you’re feeling rough, Happy. I had a similar problem when we got home from Spain a few weeks ago – a bug caught on the plane, I think, rather than unwise or unfortunate eating. Hope yours disappears quickly, as mine did, and doesn’t get superseded by a head cold with much sniffling, coughing and barking, which is still reluctamt to leave.
Penny, I do agree about live streamings. We have a lovely little arts cinema only a few minutes walk from home where they stream a lot of theatre, ballet, opera etc. The very first one I saw was a little disconcerting as initially it seemed as though the players were overacting, when of course they were working in front of a live theatre audience, a totally different technique from film or TV.

So sorry you’re unwell on your day off Happy 😞. Much better to be unwell Monday to Friday!

Friends of ours raved about a live streaming they recently saw Polly and Hermaj. Will go myself when I get the opportunity. Still freezing here BTW – no idea where our spring has gone!

Add my condolences, Happy – hope it passes soon. Nothing worse – though the unintentional fast day can be some compensation.

Just broken our fast (yes, I do know it’s the weekend, but my FDs this week have been spectacularly cheaty and therefore ineffectual) with half a mug of carrot, cumin and butter bean soup. So the seasons change: shopping list and veg garden forays changes from berries to ingredients for soups and winter salads, and Sunday afternoon activity reverts to making a vat of soup for weekday lunches. And much as I hate the approach of winter, the soup was delicious – another compensation!

Oh, I do wish there was a ‘thanks’ button on this forum! You’re all so nice and encouraging, too.

Hope you feel better soon, Happy. Strangely, OH was up in the night with the runs. He’s now in bed as he is freezing cold. Gastric flu? He had whitebait on Thursday, so it could be that.

We’ll never pay a fortune for a distant view in a theatre again. Two years ago we saw King Lear at The National. Seats were a treat from our daughter but we could not even recognise the actors. And our visit to The Met in New York was the same. You lose the sense of occasion, but if ‘the play’s the thing’ for you, it’s better.

I did remember you saying that you’d continued to lose, Happy, so I didn’t worry. I think a glass of wine tonight will be in order.

    Pol 🍷🍜

Mmm Fast, that soup sounds delicious!

Thanks for all your kind thoughts, but I seem to be OK again now. Bizarre, it was very painful stomach ache for 3 hours but without any of the other foul symptoms usually associated with bugs or poisoning! I’ve been into town to pick up my new glasses. Yeay, I can see again πŸ™‚ And I’ve had a sandwich. All good!

Glad you’re feeling better – bet that sandwich was good! We’ve just followed the soup with the last of the year’s runner beans, with some toasted almonds and a few pumpkin seeds stirred in. Not a recipe anyone’s book would recognise – good thing the DH isn’t fixated on meat and 2 veg, or even ‘what’s this called?’! – but full of vits, fibre, proteins, good fats, not too many cals and very tasty. Hope it shows on the scales in the morning!

Have a good rest of the weekend, all – and happy Monday to those for whom it’s rapidly approaching.

Glad the tum is better Hap.
Inspired by a couple of restaurant meals which included broad beans, I picked some up at the farmers market yesterday. Popped a few in a small dish with a LITTLE water in the microwave and continued attending to the rest of the meal on the stove. Next thing Mr P rushes in: “What’s burning?” Acrid smoke was pouring out of the microwave. He grabbed an oven mit and the bowl and rushed them outside. The house stank!
I’ve had bad hay fever from the hazard reduction burning they have been doing in the bushland surrounding the city. Obviously I had lost my usually refined sense of smell! Very dangerous. It was about to catch on fire.πŸ”₯πŸ”₯
Thank goodness we have had rain now so the air is clear and I can breathe again. 🌧 P

Oh P – glad Mr P caught that! (And reassured to know I’m not the only one capable of setting fire to food in a microwave). Hope that wasn’t all your lovely broad beans gone, but glad you’re safe.

Too late for the broadbeans for that meal, Fast. Roast lamb with garlic and rosemary, baked with onions, garlic, capsicum, sweet potato, chats, whole figs, served with dutch carrots, green beans and asparagus. SO good. Despite the smell of burnt beans!!
I’ll boil the next lot on the stove.
My mum set her microwave on fire with a piece of toast. This is when we knew she had dementia 😐😐 Doesn’t auger well for me, does it? P

Oh whoops, you and me both, then…..

The lamb sounds wonderful – cruelty, actually, at the end of a fast day! Is ‘food porn’ a thing? Supper with friends planned tomorrow, after an afternoon at Ken Loach’s latest film – she has promised slow-cooked lamb tagine. (She’s also a dessert genius, and her OH is a cheese and wine fanatic – damn, I shall be driving!)

Oh sorry Fast πŸ˜‘ I didn’t mention the mango and creme fraiche we had with coffee afterwards. It was for his birthday. Family celebration today. I’ll need my Monday fast ☺☺☺

Ken Loach’s latest film, followed by lamb tagine. It doesn’t get much better than that, Fast. The film is on at our little arthouse just down the road so I’m hoping to catch it.

Anyone else have this problem? I’m so indoctrinated I find myself hesitating before I lick my finger when cooking to recall wether it’s a fast day or not! 😬
