  • Morning/evening all,

Jo, I’m with Happy. Your metabolism didn’t get where it is overnight and it will take much longer than a week to change things. You need to give it a couple of months at least. You’ve been going round in circles weight wise for quite some time so another couple of months isn’t going to make much difference.

I understand your impatience as I’m the same but think about how far you’ve come and give yourself some time to make some permanent changes that will make losing the remaining weight easier and maintaining your loss less of a chore when you get there.

It is overcast and very breezy here today so a great day for getting the washing dry. I’m glad I had my walk yesterday as it was perfect walking weather.

I’m conducting an experiment of one by weighing every day for two weeks and logging it. It is amazing how much it can vary and could be quite depressing if I didn’t know better.

No fasting today but 23/1 and I’m having a very summery chicken salad with home made coleslaw, mushrooms Γ  la Grecque and some new potatoes. If I want anything else I have berries and yoghurt in the fridge.
I usually open a bottle of wine at the weekend but I’m going to try to avoid it for another week , and I certainly can do without the calories.

Have a good one everybody 😜

    Amazon,

No wine!? You’re a stronger woman than me!

I’m having a treat free weekend. I often make us some biscuits or welsh cakes, but I had a couple of greedy days in the week (not sugar, and one of them I blame you for as it was you who first pointed out to me that peanut butter was not just a cooking ingredient!). But I’m not going without the fermented grape juice 😊

Raining and breezy here. I’m wondering if I’ll have the resolve for a run in the rain later….

    Happy,

I drank an awfully large amount of alcohol (compared to my now reformed habits πŸ˜‰ )in the few days I was in Rome and it is even worse when I consider that apart from on Sunday we only had it in the evenings. I had a wee dram to celebarate Andy Murray winning in Rome last weekend and that is all I’ve had since my Bloody Mary on the plane home.
It also makes me throw caution to the wind and snack on cheese, nuts and anything I can find and I really need to stop doing that.

Amazon I know what you mean. I ate an entire bag of Quinioa chips last night after too many drinks. Being good today as I just got my order of slim noodles delivered, so having them for lunch with turkey mince bolognaise sauce. I’ve tried loads of kinds of zero noodles and these are by far the best tasting.

Just made my boys a huge plate of gyoza’s for lunch which I can’t eat as I am allergic to wheat. My 13 year old step son ate about 15 of them! Oh to be 13 and skinny and eat what you want! If I keep myself busy it’s easy to stay away from the treat drawer.

No fasting today but will be good.

Had anyone tried ADF? Just wondered if this speeds things up?

    Jo, Jo, Jo.

Do you ever go back and read your own posts? You have all the answers to your weight loss issues in your own posts, and in the responses of Amazon and Happy. Over many months.

    Cheers, Bay 🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺

    Hi Ali,

The less you eat the more you lose but if you make healthier choices you will find it much easier to keep the weight off.

I don’t care for what I think of as slimy noodles and I am also determined not to use low calorie substitutes but eat less of the real thing. For me the joy of this way of eating is that nothing is forbidden and it is about replacing bad eating habits with good ones. I’ll never give up bread or a slice of home made cake, a good piece of patisserie, a helping of roast potatoes or a glass or three of wine but I am learning to have smaller amounts less often, eating and drinking them slowly and actually appreciating them rather than mindlessly shovelling them down.

    5:2 isn’t a diet it is a life changer.

Amazon we are on the same page. Your last post is gold, I would like to print it and frame it!
After a very indulgent and long lunch in the sunshine at a winery today, I really don’t want to give up such occasions, life is too short! Thank goodness I now have 5:2 to reset on Monday to stay in control.

Hi Happy, didn’t you realize that peanut butter is an important food group!! One just needs to monitor ones intake or it can become addictive! I did not have it in the house for years as oldest son is very allergic to it, but now he has moved out, it is always in the pantry!

    Nama,

We never had peanut butter when I was growing up. I would have been well into adulthood before I bought some for satay/ gado gado. It wasn’t until Amazon mentioned having a spoonful on fast days that it occurred to me I could eat it. You’re right, too addictive! Luckily my local supermarket doesn’t stock one that is 100% peanuts and doesn’t contain palm oil, so I rarely buy it. I happened to be in my favoured, but further afield, supermarket this week though! I’ve only eaten half a (small) jar since Wednesday 😊

A teaspoon of peanut butter has salvaged many a FD πŸ˜†

I only buy the 100% peanuts variety as I try to avoid anything that has added palm oil and some of them contain sugar :shudder:

Nama, shouldn’t you be fast asleep?

Its just past midnight Amazon, you know I am a night owl! Just need to do a few dishes (made a trifle for the post baptism lunch tomorrow) and iron the top I plan to wear. I wont get up til 8.30am ‘Night

Ha ha, a tsp salvages a fast day; a tbsp or two shipwrecks a non-fast day πŸ˜€

    Night Nama! 🌚

Maybe she meant that a spoon ‘sabotages’ a fast day?
    Night Happy!

You can’t buy peanut butter in France readily, so I sometimes make it.
I have been doing 4:3 as close to 0 cal fasts as possible, but find eating 3 or 4 brazil nuts let’s me sleep. So I understand you, Amazon.

Someone, maybe you, Happy, posted a link from the Sydney Morning Herald about nut-eating which I found interesting.

I have lost 3 kilos in 6 weeks. This is less than at the beginning, but ok.
Lovely day in France so back out to the garden.
    xx

    Happy,
I understand what you and Dr Fung are saying about metabolism fixing but remember I do 19/5 everyday, that should keep my insulin level low and I plan on sticking to 2 or 3 zero fasts per week. I would be happy to increase non fast days calories to 1500(that’s plenty for me, don’t need 2000) but I do not want to maintain or gain. I will try again next week, see what happens. I want to find a solution. I know long fasts (5 days)work but I can’t do them more than once per month, I would be concerned about nutritional levels.
Remember I am active most of everyday, I am not sitting about, jogging 15 mins, walking briskly 45 mins and playing bowls( min 2 hours, standing and slow walking) 6/7 days per week. I do at least 3 hours gardening and 3 hours housework weekly too.
If the scales do not decrease weekly I cannot motivate myself to carry on, simple as!

Wiwi, 3kg in 6 weeks is excellent πŸ™‚

If I’m struggling on a FD I don’t want a chunk of carrot or cucumber I want something to satisfy the psychological craving and a spoonful of pb usually does it for me.

Sabotage is kidding myself that I’m not over eating when I know I am.

    Jo,

it’s your life. If you think what you do works then carry on.

However, it seems to me that unless you take steps to fix your broken metabolism, you won’t be eating 1500 calories a day when you reach your goal. On the assumption that you have three stone still to lose, you can subtract another 200-250 calories from your maintenance TDEE.

And it seems to me unless you fix your broken metabolism you will continue to struggle to lose weight,

Ask yourself what was the difference between your five day water fast and five non-consecutive fasts? Why was five consecutive days greater than the sum of its parts?

    Wiwi,

This is another article discussing why calorie counts on food don’t relate well to calories absorbed.

    http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/science-reveals-why-calorie-counts-are-all-wrong/

    Jo,

On reflection, considering the above and the fact that you can’t possibly accurately know what calories you consume when you eat out (and you admit you eat out a lot), maybe your metabolism isn’t broken after all. It seems just as likely that you’re wrong about the calories you consume and are probably consuming more than the 1200 you think you are. In which case you need to eat less not more πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€

Well, the weather turned out better than expected and it’s been dry although hugely windy. I did go for a run, 6km, although I did have to stop at the top of inclines to reinsert my lungs. Now enjoying a glass of fermented grape juice.

I’ve been massively hungry this week, and had a couple of bad greedy afternoons. One 24 hour fast made little difference so I fasted again yesterday, very rare for me to need two fasts, but it seems to have been the reset I needed. Not very hungry today, and no 3 o’clock hungry worm to feed!!!

Amazon thanks – I can’t eat real pasta anyway and gluten free pasta is horrible, so for me the slim noodles work.

Happy now great article and really interesting. I tend to avoid anything pre-packaged apart from dried flour etc.

Spent the afternoon baking a cake for my boys (I can’t eat it as it’s made with flour) so no temptation there! Then tidying up the garden, which is a mess as we were away in Canada 2 months.

Just made tapas for dinner and now watching the FA cup final which is boring but my boys are glued to the screen!!

Fasting tomorrow so enjoying a drink or two tonight!

    Hi Ali,

I’ve just turned on the TV, sadly just in time to see Man U score the potentially winning goal ☹️ Don’t tell me, let me guess… Your boys support Man U?! My ‘boy’ (well, mental age anyway) supports Liverpool.

Mine support Tottenham Hotspurs! I have a 13 year step son who eats like a horse (I honestly don’t know where he puts it) and a bigger boy (my hubbie)

My step son is tucking away into the chocolate cake I made for him while we have coffee! We don’t see him that much with us living on Canada most of the time, so I do have the tendency to spoil him rotten when we do.

    Have a lovely evening everyone.

    Hi All,
It’s time for me to take a break from the thread.
Speak to you all again when I have lost a stone. Wiwi and I have agreed to follow the same plan. I am going to spend some time focussing on my other hobbies.
Be good to yourselves and each other.
    Have a good summer

Good luck Jo! Hopefully see you soon.

Good luck Jo. You have all your own answers.

    Amazon, Great post. πŸŒΊπŸŒΊπŸŒΊπŸ·πŸ·β˜•οΈβ˜•οΈβ˜•οΈβ˜€οΈβ˜€οΈβ˜€οΈβ˜€οΈπŸΎπŸΎπŸŒΆπŸŒΆβ›³οΈβ›³οΈ

Wiwi, wonderful weight loss. Keep on keeping on. Bay 🌺🌺

Amazon, I love your summary. Here is mine.

The secret to weight loss and maintenance is eternal vigilance, and this is what I try to do:

Weigh every day and record weight
Record food intake every day (to establish that I know what my TDEE is)
Drink 2 litres of water each day
Eat healthy foods, such as green vegetables, fish, eggs, yogurt, nuts and berries
    Eat very few carbs.
    Eat full fat yogurt
    Eat NO processed food
    Drink very little alcohol
    Eat NO sugar.
FAST at least 5:2 giving myself the feast and famine effect.

Therefore, if I indulge myself (which I did this morning) with a piece of cherry pie, I will pay for it with weight gain tomorrow. πŸ™‚ And I will fast zero calories tomorrow. Feast and famine!

    Cheers, Bay πŸ™‚

The posts recently give a feeling of finality to this thread.

Jojo, we are all here for you, through all channels of communication.
Remember “Join Jojo in her quest” This journey is better done altogether even if the going is rough sometimes.

My modus operandi is similar to yours, Bay, but I am going to add recording food.
My fasts now are fasts (as close to 0 as possible) and I go from 4:3 to ADF.
I can’t not drink a bit of wine on up days. (We have a chateau cardboard box of Malbec and it would be a shame for it to go to vinegar)

Overcast day here and not inspiring for the garden.

    Happy Day, Fasting friends.
    xxWiwi

    Hi Wiwi

I have a glass of wine on non fast days. At the moment I’m doing 4:3 to get rid of those pesky kg that have been hanging around since Christmas. I think that all of us who like food, have to watch our selves for the rest of life. The sooner we come to that reality, the sooner we reach and maintain our goal.

As we have all agreed, this is a way of life, not a short term diet. 🌺🌺🌺. Yes, I need the support of other experienced intermittent fasters to keep on the IF wagon. Thank you, all.

    Cheers, Bay πŸŒΊπŸŒΊβ˜€οΈβ˜€οΈπŸŒ·πŸŒ·πŸ·πŸ·

    Wiwi,

It’s a lovely gardening day here, although I’m wary of planting my beans out… Slug and snail season is upon us 🐌🐌🐌 Once I plant them, that’s it, no more early nights for me, I’ll be out with a torch and a bucket ☹️

    Hi Happy

Do you wear a head torch like a caver? What do you do with the errant snails? are they edible? πŸ˜³πŸ˜³πŸ˜œπŸ˜œπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

    Cheers, Bay

Oh Bay, the errant snails… They get relocated to the far side of the beck, in the hopes that some live happily there and not all find their way back via the bridge. As for the slugs… Those that eat living plants go for a swim I’m afraid.

And yes, head torch works best so I have two hands free.

    Morning/evening all,

It is a beautiful morning with a clear blue sky and sunshine.

My 23/1 non FD yesterday became 21/3 as there was a pause between salad and yoghurt with berries but that is good enough for me. I couldn’t live my life eating only once per day but as a way of preventing over eating and undoing all the good work of 3 FDs it is as SAMM would say doable.
I found it hard not opening a bottle of wine and as soon as I mentioned it here, I wanted to do so, but I resisted temptation.

Bay, I lost my way completely the second half of last year and despite fasting still managed to gain 12lbs. I got to grips with things again at the start of February and lost the 12lbs again fairly quickly but my weight stalled again because I took my eye off the ball (again, when will I learn?) on non FDs which is why I am experimenting with eating once per day. It is beyond me to exceed my TDEE at a single sitting these days. I’m aiming for similar today so shall now go to the kitchen for another cup of tea and to open a can of willpower πŸ˜‰

Have a good one everybody 😜

    Hi Amazon

Well done. It’s hard to stay on track, and you have done a fantastic job.

As Samm says, Do what is doable and paraphrasing RT, It’s better not to begin eating at all, than to have to fight the demon hunger all day long.

    Cheers, Bay πŸ™‚

    Amazon,

Can you get tins of willpower from Amazon?! I definitely could do with some for non-fast days lately!

    Hi all,
Catching up reading and very surprised to read of your decision to take a break from the thread Jojo. I hope some time to reflect helps you to sort out your direction. It would really be a shame to give up on fasting and I think it would be difficult to carry on fasting without the spirit of camaraderie that this forum provides.

Talking of feast and famine Bay, I have definitely ‘over feasted’ this weekend. So I will probably be very hungry this week on my fasts. But a fabulous weekend it was, so well worth it. The family gathering today (following the newest members baptism)was just lovely. We all ate and drank far too much, due to the Italian grandparents amazing energy and hospitality and I am now typing in bed ready for an early night!

Amazon I would also love to know where to buy tins of willpower! Sounds like a wonderful marketing opportunity there….

………I could have sworn I had some in the back of the cupboard but on reading the label with my glasses on it says whey powder πŸ˜‰

I went for a stroll in the sunshine this morning down to the local Sunday market. Last time I went there were more fast food outlets than food stalls but this week was completely different, although the usual veg and meat stalls were there. There is also a fabulous olive stall and I bought some mixed olives marinaded in herbs, garlic and orange peel (delicious!) and a very small helping of some ricotta stuffed baby red peppers
There was a charming Italian man selling a variety of delicious looking cheeses and cured meats and I came away with a small piece of delicious salami. He was very keen to give me a slice of everything on the stall to try but I declined as I would have eaten several hundred calories just tasting πŸ˜†
There were two more cheese stalls, one selling Spanish cheeses and the other selling cheese from all over the continent.
I sped past the bread stall but lingered to try some lovely olive oil which was only tasted to satisfy my urge for a sliver of bread πŸ˜‰ ignored the gluten free but sugar laden cakes, the pie stall, the wine merchant and came home before I succumbed to something I would regret eating.

    Hello,
    {Eternal vigilance}! Yes.
It’s really nice to vent out here about our frustrations but beautiful to share many good stories. Family, traveling, gardening, book club, jokes, recipes…
My last fast Thursday was a little troublesome! The day was so long and I had headaches and the day after I was so hungry.
Last night we went out which it’s rare and that was my Feast with grilled tuna sushi roll, kimchi and 1 glass of fermented grape juice (Happy). The waitress was too busy to ask if I wanted another glass. I would’ve but glad she didn’t come around.
It’s raining and I am lazy but church it’s the plan for the morning.
I have no idea about my weight because I need to buy a new scale. Really want to behave good today w/o much fermented grape juice in order to be focus tomorrow.
Later I will bake a banana loaf! I have so many ripe ones and I don’t throu food on the garbage.
My two books arrived and can hardly wait to sink my teeth on the Obesity Code first.
Tin of motivation – I have plenty here 😘
RT – the jokes were not easy this week. Must of the I got it.
    Be well there everyone πŸ’‹
    Xoxo
    B

    Way to go, Amazon. πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡

    Whey hey πŸ˜€

Do you think snails with garlic butter would be good on a fast day? I found my compost heap carpet covered in them last night. Perhaps I should feed them garlic first? I’m sure my will power would be excellent if they were the main menu! Perhaps a photo……..whey hey indeed!

Well, Apricot, is that a gastronomic question or a question of retribution.
IMHO, for the former eat the garlic butter and throw away the snail, if it’s eye for an eye argument, eat your enemy and transfer his magical powers to yourself!

Happy and Amazon, I have been thinking- if you send some willpower to Happy, Amazon, does that mean you could run short?

    Ha ha Wiwi!

As Happy is a successful maintainer methinks she should be sending some in my direction……..

Well, that occurred to me too Amazon! Although last week was a struggle with overeating on non-fast days, I’ve ended the week under my upper weight limit. So…until you reach maintenance I’ll let you keep your whey powder…unless you have a magic porridge pot of whey powder? πŸ˜‹

All this talk of willpower has done wonders as I’ve eaten sensibly and sparingly this weekend in comparison to the past few months. I decided to have a G&T, took a couple of mouthfuls and then decided I didn’t really want it so it was poured away!

I know that when I get out of bed tomorrow morning I won’t be annoyed with myself for overdoing it again and will fast thinking about losing weight rather than damage limitation πŸ™‚

If I had anything with magic powers in my possession I wouldn’t be here talking to you guys πŸ˜‰

    Thanks πŸ˜€

I knew you would appreciate that πŸ˜œπŸ˜—

I still cannot believe last year’s minor premiers Freo have yet to win a game crazy this year we take on GWS at home Saturday night and will need to improve to be competitive. Some thoughts for today this Way of Life is exactly that the fast life and whether it’s for health benefit’s longevity weight loss or just an overall feeling of wellness it is such a good skill set to have acquired and then master. With basic quotes still the best drivers eat fast & live longer the less you eat the more you lose and my own below we all have our own rational and I guess vanity plays its part or role as well the best combination is derived from a study of one and do your own research on what works for you and apply that to find your doable and keep on keeping on and allow rate over time to do its magic. When we have a time frame with a deadline a target or a goal that somehow appears from nowhere a bit like handing up a research project that you have kept safely in the school bag for the past 6 weeks then realise it is due tomorrow 😳 my bad then the wheels fall off and we look for excuses rather than solutions. At times every single one of us here has been our own worst critic our own worst enemy we forget how far we have come we forget what amazing achievements have already happened looking in the mirror we only see how far we have to go and not how far we have come even though we clearly have made the change recognised the health benefits and are proactive about staying committed that does not mean we have and enjoy success every day week or month we fall off or slip up that is the beauty of 5-2 but it’s Monday a fast day and back we all come for a new adventure on the fast life. I think there is enough pressure from being alive and living without the constant draining and at times deflating battle with the scales so Jojo just take some time out relax keep smiling stay strong stay happy to be you and chill the beans and keep on keeping on
It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop.
Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.

Fasting today in the knowledge that the piece of pie surprisingly had nil effect on my weight. I am assuming this is so, because the pie became my whole lunch. And because I had already done 4:3 last week. This somehow has reset my body to cope with the indulgence. However, I do know that if I keep on indulging, my weight will zoom up. 😳😳😬😬

So full 24 hour fast day today. Plus vegetable soup. 🍡🍡
