Welcome to the July challenge! Winter, summer, mid-year. Wherever you are, challenge yourself this month. For some that challenge may be as simple as logging in once a day, aiming to lose a few kilos or pounds, or staying in maintenance. It’s entirely up to you!
For the newbies, the following might look like a lot of information. But it is just that information. No rules in this forum!
The monthly challenges were started by @coda in May 2016 and have been going ever since…
These monthly forums are full of wonderful supportive people from around the world. If you have a question, a tip, or need a mental pick me up, this is the place to come. And you can join at any time.
I’ve copied the general guidance from previous months’ forums – it’s tried and true!
How to start your daily post?
Start your daily post with the day of the month, where you are and if you’re on a fast day (FD); a non-fast day (NFD) or a controlled day (CD) – (e.g. for 1st of Jun it would go something like “Day 1 –UK – FD” for me.) We use the day of the month, rather than how many days you’ve been on this 5:2 pathway, because it helps keep track of those of us on different sides of the international date line. If you want to post again on the same day, people usually start it with “2nd post”. But again, there are no rules.
Can I stay anonymous?
Of course you can! But if you want to, give a quick introduction about yourself in your first post– mostly for the benefit of the newbies. You can share as much or as little as you want. Some people like the anonymity of this forum so feel free to share as much as you are comfortable with…A brief blurb about your journey so far and what you aim get from this way of life (WOL). Also if you wish, your starting weight and any other measurements (waist, hip, bust etc) you aim to keep track of throughout the month.
What’s the spreadsheet all about?
The wonderful @at will soon upload the monthly spreadsheet. Entirely up to you whether you wish to use it – it can help you track progress, and see how others are doing for some mutual support. I don’t use it myself – it’s completely up to you!
What do I have to post?
Anything you want! You can add any comments/questions/moans/whinges/triumphs… or anything you feel like you want to share with the rest of the forum. We all have good days and bad days, days we fall off the wagon and days when we hang in there for dear life………so if you want to share it – post it. Some people read the forum but never post anything. That’s completely ok too.
Recipes, tips, tricks and questions can also be shared – most of us are logged on at one time or another and can clarify things, offer advice, support etc when needed – this is the great thing about this international forum, there’s always someone online.
What is a pocket list?
Over the course of these monthly challenges, there have been small groups doing their own mini-challenges. Over the months, there have been pocket lists for FDs, doing planks, doing toilet squats and so forth. I propose a prohibition list for those who want to refrain from imbibing alcohol Mon – Thurs. Those who wish to participant put their name down on a ‘pocket list’. The pocket list can be printed off and kept in your pocket as a physical reminder of who else is sharing the same goal as you for that day. Or it can just be a mental trick to remember that you’re not alone.
For those of you who are new, if you are copying the pocket list on FDs on your phone or a tablet these steps might help:
You should hold your finger on the first line you want to copy e.g. “day 1 -pocket..” and the select option will display. You should then see a “start” selection marker and an “end” selection marker…drag the “end” selection marker to the end of the list and choose Copy..
It’s best to start the selection on standard text rather than people’s names/links as they are links and you will automatically be linked to their profile..it can be a little frustrating…
But I still have questions!
5:2 basics – answers from @simcoeluv who used come on and answer queries newbies had to many FAQs plus top tips:
And what’s with all these abbreviations?

Let’s have a great July! 🙂
I’ll be joining in!
I’m in, and updated the spreadsheet with my stats. Thanks!
@brightonbelle, thanks for picking up the baton for July, count me in!!!🙌 I’m determined to keep the momentum of June’s challenge going!!!
Count me in please @brightonbelle 🙂
Hi, after a hiatus of over a year, I am back to this WOE.
I am trying to drop weight for my nephews wedding in Oct, and this always works, gradually, but it does.
Please add me to the spreadsheet, I will update my stats on the 1st.
Good to see a few familiar names here.
Thanks for still running this thread.
Yes, I’m in for July, too 🙂

Day -1 UK
Welcome onboard everyone ! See you tomorrow to kick off our July challenge
Thanks to @at- “It’s July and I have hope in who I am becoming.”
I’m in – maintenance is my game.
Thanks @Brighton Belle for hosting.
I’ll be joining you in maintenance @songbirdme. I’ve been hovering around this weight for the last couple of months so I’m going to own it.
I’m in..!! This is my first time entering a challenge
Hi @brightonbelle, I’m in for July and thanks for hosting. June ended up being a bit of a washout so I’m back for July and determined to stay the course!
1 Jul 20
I would like to resume my Keto and intermittent fasting. It helped me most last April when I started to record my tracking progress even If i just write down my meals. I felt more in control of attaining my goal. Currently going through the Keto Flu again so it would be helpful to have something to keep me motivated.
Day 1, NFD, Aus
Hello everyone!! So good to be back for another month. Thanks for picking up the reins @brightonbelle!
My goal this month is to be more mindful on weekends. I tend to completely go wild which undoes any good during the week. And to continue with the Dry til Fri approach.
Day 1, Emden Germany, NFD
I’m a Dutchwoman living in the North of Germany, married, 64 y.o, 163 cm/5ft 4in tall. My weight was 56 kg/126.5lbs all my adult life until starting a new job in 2011 where my weight crept up to 72.9 kg. I read the book and joined the challenges on and off from March 2017 on. I lost 20 kg very quickly but gained much of it back. Starting weight this month 61.4kg/135.3lbs. My goal is 60 kg/132.3lbs so I’m almost there.
@at last month went very well, I’m trying to repeat it this month.
Have a nice day everyone!
@brightonbelle – I’m in please. Only have about half a stone to lose but I’ve been losing and gaining the same weight for some time now! Need to just go for it and keep it off. I’ve done this WOE before and been successful. I find it very tough at the beginning and will do more so now that I’m working from home but I’m determined to crack it!! My FD are Tues and Thurs, so I already did my first one yesterday so am feeling great and positive today! My goal is to eat more mindfully and to just take one day at a time and put all of my efforts into it. This forum is great, I find all of the posts very helpful and encouraging!
Day 1 – Ireland 🇮🇪 – FD
I am in for July however this mornings weigh in showed a gain for the month of June which I knew it would. Indulgent boozy nights will tell!!! DH and I are back on track from today, fed up with gaining weight….time to get real.
I have been doing 5:2 since July 2017 so it’s my 3rd year…..I lost 30lbs when I started back then, but through laziness and lack of vigilance, a good bit of that has returned over the past year. Being a 53 year old female, 5’2″ and petite, I can’t afford anymore gain.
Wishing everyone the best of luck for this new start.
Day 1 – UK – CD
Thank you @BrightenBelle for Julys thread & thank you to @at for the spreadsheet.
I successfully completed June’s challenge for a 4lb loss.
01.07.20 = 144.3lbs
01.06.20 = 148.5lbs
Good luck everyone. Take care & stay safe.
My Goal for July is to see a 4lb loss.
Day 1 – Ireland – CD
Start weight 166.5 lbs
End weight 165.5 lbs
So a 1lb loss but a loss all the same 🏅
Goal this month will be a 2lb loss 🤞💪
I had a really good LFD yesterday and cycled 50 km last night so was hoping it might make the difference so I’m thrilled as was up to nearly 169 lbs on Monday after a EFS last week. So I must now keep the momentum and as always I look forward to new beginnings so July here I come 👍
I am committed to reduce the amount of: bread, milk, sugar I’m having. I’m on the dry most of the time so will only drink if there’s an occasion 🎉.
I’m also going to use the spreadsheet this month. Thanks @at 👏.
Thanks again @penz for being a terrific host in June and I look forward to July with @brightonbelle – thank you both!
Onward and downward ⬇️
We rise by lifting others 💕
Day 1 – Lake district UK – FD
Good morning everyone
Firstly thank you @brightonbelle for hosting this month, I’ll try and contribute a bit more (kitchen renovation work permitting) this month.
Talking of which, it’s already impacting on my routine, MOAM and long walks have gone out of the window at the moment, the last 3 days have been on the knees sorting out and levelling the floor! Already decided NO work at weekends… starting Friday lunchtime!!!
@jaifaim – Same as you, lost 1 lb in June, but …. a loss nontheless!
Towards the end of the month will see me complete my first 12 months on this forum and the 5:2 WOL, very impressed, will make sure I post results etc on my 5:2 ‘birthday/anniversary’.
Got to go, got a floor to sand ….
Take care all
Day 1 – South Africa 🇿🇦 – NFD
About me:- David, 58. Originally from the UK, living in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. I started fasting in 2014 halfheartedly after seeing the ‘Eat, Fast…’ documentary. I got serious about my weight in March last year, about a year after I retired when my weight started creeping up. I lost about 8 kilos, and I’ve been maintaining, more or less, for about a year.
The myfitnesspal app has been invaluable in helping me with maintenance. It’s really easy once you get used to it. I could probably move to 6:1 now, but I’m sticking with 5:2 for the health benefits, & also so I can eat a bit more on the NFDs. So I’ll be sticking to Mon/Thurs fast days.
Welcome to the new joiners & return fasters. Thank you @brightonbelle for hosting the July Challenge. Wishing everyone a healthy and successful July. Let’s hope the second half of 2020 will be better than the first, & that we can start to see the back of this awful virus.
@bert1802 – no, I’ve never heard of fried pickles; I’m still trying to get my head around the deep-fried Oreos! 😱
Pocket List -Day 1 🍒
Day 1 – DTF List ☕️
Day 1, London, UK, LFD
I’m so glad to start another challenge, fresh start, positive vibe, raring to go AND kicking of this month with a LFD!!! Water, peppermint tea, coffee and an “I’m desperate” miso sachet at the ready!!! I posted my results over in June, but it was my most successful month in forever, I managed to finally get off of the 4-5 month plateau where the bouncy-bouncy scales came very close to being lobbed into the nearest skip!!! June was a month of 4:3 sometimes ADF; I completed 13 LFDs, 1 FD500 and 16 NFDs (only 3 with booze!!🥇) which have resulted in a loss of 9.8lbs. 🙌 I’m chuffed to bits!! I’m still nowhere near my ATL (all time low) but I’m making a dent in the ‘Gain of 2019’😖.
Aims for this month
1. Stick to 4:3 or ADF, whichever FEELS right,
2. Lose 7lbs+
3. Increase my steps to get ‘close’ to 10,000 per day, with the help of Leslie Sansone!
4. Have a ‘relatively dry’ July…………….I’ll give the red wine 🍷a swerve for ‘most’ of this month! The DTF list might give me too much freedom, I can do a lot of damage in 3 whole days!!!!
I’m so grateful to @brightonbelle for hosting us for July, these challenges keep me honest!! I’m good at fooling myself, but if you’re not shifting timber challenge after challenge, then you’re not actually challenging yourself………………… lesson learnt!! In a rut, on a plateau, whatever I called it I wasn’t ‘doing’ IF properly ………………. The treats & cheats were outweighing the fasting benefit!! LFDs allow me to be that bit more generous on my NFDs, I was being too restrictive and effectively put myself on a low-calorie diet😟😟. Anyway, back to it!!
Welcome to the newbies, you’ve made a good choice with this funny, varied, experienced, international forum!!!!!! My one piece of (unsolicited!! 😁) advice ………………………………….. Water, water & more water, that tummy rumble is the greedy hunger dragon roaring, one cool glass of clear water WILL drown him!!!!
“To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe.” – Anatole France
Day 1 – 2nd Post
Oh, well done – @flourbaby! Lets call that 10 lb down for June! 🥇🏆
Pocket List -Day 1 🍒
Day 1 NFD UK
Good morning all.
Total loss for June 3 lbs. scales are teetering a bit but as soon as it registered 3lbs loss I got off pdq.
Had hoped for 4 but not sure what happened yesterday.
Please count me in for July.
What a lot of new names, at least new to me. Nice to see so many people joining in.
My iPad seems to have a Cheshire Cat in it, things keep disappearing. I looked in quickly early this morning and there was a long post, I think from @pen or @songbird,, but now I sit down and look again it’s gone. Most irritating.
My aim for this month is to lose 4 lbs and to be more accountable on NFD.
No news yet on blood tests, will check on Friday. Hope there is some positive news.
Talking about positive news my hairdresser rang yesterday to say they are opening next week and offered me AN APPOINTMENT. Yay go girl. Very pleased about that and looking forward to losing unkempt locks.
Keep strong everyone.
Day 1 Oxon, UK CD
Hello everyone. I’m a 59 female, retired. 1 DH, 1 DD with partner, 1 DS & 1 cocker spaniel.
Lost 3 stone with 5:2 2014-15. Gradually put some of that back on. Over the last 11 challenges I have managed to lose that excess.
Got to my goal during June and will be on maintenance now. So any tips from those more experienced members would be gratefully received.
Have just found post that disappeared. Sorry @at the credit goes to you. The cat just appeared, it’s playing games with me.
TheHappyFaster-I gravitate towards ‘carnivore’ ie very low carb (similar to keto but no veggies-just meat/eggs/some dairy). I’ve never dealt with keto flu but I use a LOT of salt. I put 1/8tsp of pink salt in each cup of coffee. I salt my meat. I salt my eggs. and I’ve been known to salt my cheese, lol. Maybe bump up your salt intake and see if that helps?
When I was doing a meat only time, (about two months, last year), I did start getting night-time leg cramps but I started taking an over the counter magnesium supplement 3 times a week and that took care of the problem. I didn’t need it right away though.
My FD on Monday only had 8 carbs and it went well, but salt, salt and more salt lol 🙂
Day 1, FD, U.S.-MI
Decided to start my journey back to IF with ADF this week (M/W/F). Going to stick to eggs and coffee, (with half&half/splenda) again today, since that went so well on Monday. I have to forgo my normal morning walk/push-ups since I’m cleaning my grandma’s house but that will be a good bit of movement, probably more so than my walk, (I’ll be going up and down stairs a lot to do her laundry etc). And I might still fit in a gentle walk in tonight if the weather cooperates.
Morning weigh-in: x (goal is 130lbs)
Please count me in for July. Annabelle48, I liked your description of the “teetering” scales. i think I have that kind, too. Strange….I have lost about 6 # over the past two months, but have been stuck recently, so here is rededication to gradual losses!
trying again after a long time away!
Day 1 – USA/GA – FD
Good morning! It’s a beautiful day for a fast lol! OK, the scales and I had an argument this morning, but we finally agreed I weigh 257 lbs. (I’m glad it saw things my way!)
@brightonbelle Thank you for hosting July!
As I said yesterday, I lost 9 to 10 lbs. in June, so I’m happy. @flourbaby Yes, I’d call that a 10 lb. loss, too! Haha! @judyjudes and @annabelle48 A 3 to 4 lb. loss is great! @jaifaim Even losing a pound is going in the right direction! Congratulations!
I gained an expected pound back today because of yesterday’s NFD, but I’m ready to tackle today and the long Independence Day weekend full of temptations. My goal for July is 253 lbs, based on a conservatively estimated 6 lbs. of monthly weight loss from my 259 plateau. But I can see that the 240s are not out of the realm of possibility for this month. It’d be great to see another inch come off the old waistline, too!
Yesterday’s record low of 256 lbs. matches up with September 2018 (and actually, also Spring of 2018, when I visited Cartagena, Colombia!) Oh, I miss traveling. In other words, I haven’t been this “thin” in two years.
My advice for newbies (after 2 months on the 5:2, as of the 11th of July) in addition to hydration, is to try whole Kosher dills (they are surprisingly low calorie) or seltzer water that has a pinch of sodium added. The extra electrolytes seem to help with those headaches that pop up occasionally.
Pocket List -Day 1
Day 1 – DTF List
Day 1 – Boston, USA – FD, Run 3-4 miles
I’m an engineer and a mother of two grade-school-aged kids, which is very fun but also exhausting. I’m trying to get into better shape to stay healthy, keep up with my very active kids, and hopefully to go on some outdoor adventures once travel is a thing again.
I’ve bundled my weight goals together in stages with home-related tasks and some rewards to make things more interesting for myself. I can’t decide if that’s a great idea or a terrible one, but I guess I’ll find out.
I joined at the end of June, so my starting stats are meaningless. I ended June (and started July) at 127.6 lbs/58 kgs.
– Fast 2-3 days/week
– Run 60-80 miles (minimum and stretch goals)
– Add in at least one (online) barre or yoga class per week
– CW: 127.6 lbs/58 kgs ; UGW: 105-110 lbs/48-49 kgs; July GW: 121 lbs/55 kgs
You are all so organized, supportive and inspiring!
@flourbaby – almost 10 lbs is incredible! Nice work! Sounds like you have a great method and some momentum working for you.
@daffodil2010 – I’m also 5’2″ and lost a bunch of weight in 2017 using 5:2, so I’m following right along with you 🙂
Day 1 Melb Aust FD880
Stared with a mild FD today, planning on 1-2 of those per week and 1-2 “true” FDs (i.e., 3 in all). This WOL is flexible, so we’ll see how it goes.
Lost 1.6 kg (3.5 lb) last month, which was less than I wanted, so will have a more diligent July.
About me – 70-y.old female, single, retired, household ruled by ginger tabby Wilbur. Started this WOL November 2018, lost 13 kg, regained 10 kg, and have now lost 14 kg, so an overall loss of 17 kg. Doing much better this time round. Have about 17.5 kg to go, so halfway there. As I’m only 154 cm tall (just over 5 ft), for mid-BMI, I need to be about 52 kg. Mainly losing weight for better health and more energy.
@flourbaby, glad the scales didn’t end in a skip, because your June end result was great. Well done you!
Pocket List -Day 1
Let’s make July count!
Day 1 Canada NFD
I started last month at 63.7kg and weighted it this morning at 61.4kg feeling pretty happy!I am 59 years old and love good food and cooking, I have been carrying the same couple of kilos on my belly for many years and would love to kiss it goodbye. Canada Day today and I am very grateful to be living in such a great country.
I end each month reflecting on my life and start the new month as if it was the start of the new year. This month I am committing to a healthier lifestyle each day exercise wise. Today I am going to make sure I spend an hour on my yoga mat:)
Welcome to all the newbies, stick with us and you will be so happy you did
@snowflake56 we are starting at exactly the same weight, I would love to get to 60kg this month as well
@betsylee thank you so much for hosting- 9 fast days for me this month- yay!!!
Day 1 – Rural Nebraska, USA – NFD
I’m in for July; thanks for hosting @brightonbelle!
I’m 61, 5’4″, married to a pastor, and keep busy with lots of commitments. For years, I was around 132, then two moves and lots of changes packed on the pounds. I love to cook, and love both beer and wine, and margaritas in the summer, so it’s tough enough not to continue to gain, let alone to lose. My DH and I first started 5:2 in 2013 and I went from 166 to 137 by December 2015…and then gained it all back because of cheating on FDs and eventually giving them up entirely. We started back on 5:2 in late February, and I’m down 11 lbs since then.
I’m looking at a vacation coming up at the end of July, first to DD’s in Colorado (with family portraits), then sisters’ in California. Lots of opportunities to go overboard on food, so want to be in a serious habit of controlled eating. So my goal of 148 lbs for July is a huge stretch for me. Huge. Goal is to get 10K steps on M,T,W,F with a total of 60K every week. I want to limit my calories on NFDs to 1400. The math says that, if I do that, I WILL lose those 5.8 pounds. The true challenge will be paying close enough attention (and counting calories, UGH) to limit NFDs to 1400. I’m hoping being in this group will keep me accountable.
So many new-to-me people; welcome (back) @busymom, @fasterjo, @kodalik1990, @mia139, @thehappyfaster, @cosmic Goddess, @excelsior12309, @willowgreen
@judyjudes, @jaifaim, @IHateLettuce, @flourbaby (10#, WOWZA!), @annabelle48, @suki2, @northgeorgia (9/10#, WOWZA!), @betsylee, @bellyblast, congratulations on your June loss!
“You can find inspiration from others, but determination is solely your responsibility.” Wishing you all bucketloads of determination today!
Day 1 – second post
Okay, I posted then saw something to edit. So clicked on edit, did so, clicked on submit…and nothing. Pasted it all again (I’ve learned to copy before submitting for just such problems)…nothing. And again, and again, and again. Now I have a message that it’s a duplicate message. But the original still isn’t showing up.
What the heck??
Okay, trying again. Didn’t work; got a message that said ERROR: Slow down; you move too fast. LOL, if only that were true! I’m going to click submit now and see if it finally shows up.
Day 1 third post
Day 1, UK, FD
@brightonbelle, thanks for hosting this month.
June ended with an overall loss of 1lb, not what I was hoping but it was real up and down month.
Starting July as I mean to go on, with a view to losing at least 4 lbs this month. Now I’m back to workIng 3 days a week properly, I can focus on using my working days as FDs as my 4 hours per day takes me over lunchtimes. I tend to do OMAD on FDs. I’m also hoping to up the exercise this month as last month was woeful. A 2 mile walk yesterday was the first real exercise in 3 weeks.
Stay safe everyone and happy July.
Day 1 UK NFD
Bit late checking in today as I went for my first walk outdoors in over 3 months It was great did 5.5 miles or 15.7k steps not quite at Leslies wall, walk, walk pace but steady .
Wow ! What a great turn out for July a good mix of old ( in the nicest possible way ) and new names I’m sure we’ll all get to know each other a lot more over the next 31 days .
Some fab results recorded in June , special shout out to @flourbaby 10lbs!!! that is truly amazing 🌟 hope some of that energy gets to the rest of us 💪
@veggiegrl – salt in coffee ? that’s a new one on me
Looking forward to the second half of 2020 – Let’s go
See you all tomorrow
Day 1 USA (Illinois) NFD
It’s wonderful to be back with the best people around the world. Thanks, @brightonbelle for getting us in line for July! Great to see many familiar names and hopefully I will get to know all the new ones.
72 year old female, Gwynne, live in NW rural Illinois, lots of farms, cows, dairy, and small towns around me. I’m a retired general music teacher, vocal/choral & still have some piano students. I look forward to choirs being able to sing again, probably once we have a vaccine.
I began 5:2 March 15, 2016 and went from near 200# (90 kg) and got down to 160# (72.5 kg) over the rest of 2016. I joined @coda in May 2016 for that challenge, and have not missed any since then. I’m content at maintenance of just over 160# (163 right now) but sure don’t want to gain back again. That part is pretty hard for me. Keeping my BMI about 25 is fine for me not to show too many wrinkles – at 5’6″ also having lost 2″ over time. Generally I do 6:1 in maintenance.
I do Silver Sneakers (senior citizen exercise, 45 minutes 3x a week) and occasional yoga. We have a nice backyard pool so getting some summer swimming in.
Take care one and all.
Onward and downward.
Day 1 UK FD
It’s great to be back in control after a pretty lax June. Surprisingly managed to stay the same weight at the end of the month as I started. So starting July at 61.5 kg. and target would be to get under 60 kg by the end of the month.
Good luck everyone and stay safe.
Well, this is me……. I’m 46, married to a hell of a guy. Actually we’ve been married 25 years as of the 30th of Dec. We have two kids….. well not so much kids but 24and 21! Yes, the still live at home, they won’t leave….. shhh! Don’t tell anyone but we don’t really want them to leave. Now they can talk, they are pretty good conversationalist. We live in Florida. I work a full time job about 2 years ago I was promoted to sales manager and now I run all of the outside sales, new build contracts and all the fun stuff that comes with it. Now, as of 1st of the year, I’ve had the pleasure of other jobs added to my list of what I do at work. It did come with a good size raise and a new job title…..
I actually started in Oct of 2016, lost about 38 lbs down to my lowest 127lb. I did this WOL for well over two years. Not sure at some point, I tumbled off the wagon into Matilda’s cage. In her cage, I gained as of this morning 17lbs.
