Fit, I started 5:2 to reverse my pre-diabetic condition, and (well-meaning) nutritionists, family and doctors advised me repeatedly to “eat , small regular meals through the day”. So the insulin situation worsened and also weight gained as really small meals through the day are hard to sustain and keep below TDEE. So, all the mad “research” that I am doing on ways to reverse it… 🙂
I am a bit scared to check sugar levels now, hoping they have stabilised now…
Being on this thread and with you all makes this journey so enjoyable and worth it!
Lotus, don’t be afraid to check your blood sugar levels, they will be much better controlled with 5:2. It’s why I got on the band wagon, too. I was shocked to discover I had a high count(17) and all the horrid symptoms to go with it. but moderate exercise and this WOE, with nearly 10 k’s weight loss has reversed it, after only 2 months I was down to normal and take no medications. I’m sure you’ll be fine, too. Glad you’re out of the weather. take care.
Had a good day today despite having to grab a quick lunch out. Chose a vegie pastie & not too bad in calories for a NFD. Pleasantly surprised. Decided to track my cals for a while so MFP has me at 1578 at the end of the day so well under my TDEE. Good. And I’ve even enjoyed 2 wines, and a hot choc and a Lindt dark chocy still coming up (thanks for the tip CG luv the hot choc at the end of the day). How great is that. Will leave them for when I get the mindless craving for something sweet. 47 cals for the Jarrah hot choc is pretty darn good.
Lotus glad you’re home safe & sound but a bit late no doubt.
Really tired today after a very disturbed night’s sleep so not even going to try & reply to all the posts. Have a physio app’t Thursday to try & sort out whether the low-level pain down one leg is from my back or my hip. Enough to stop me getting to sleep but also wakes me up. So off to some mindless tv watching. Hope you all had a great day and held your heads high because we’re all winners with our WOL.
FB and GG would love to see a video of when you meet up!! Wouldn’t that be cool. And ……anyone got any contacts in Melbourne? We need to organise a hidden camera for the lunch on Friday with CG GG FB and Andrew. Or can I be a fly on the wall? suejen
Hi Lotus – I agree that this thread is particularly kind and supportive and not in any way critical. I’m sure you will find that your blood sugars will be much improved from this wol, just like Dr. M’s when he first started on this regime too. Check them out and put your mind at ease. So glad you got home safe and sound and hoping that awful weather passes over quickly.
SJ – hope you get your pain sorted at the physio’s. Well done on keeping below your TDEE, it is amazing what treats you can still have and come out a winner! I think we’d all like to be flies on the wall for the grand AD get-together! Do you think they’ll tell us all they get up to or will it be a case of ‘Whatever happens in Melbourne, stays in Melbourne’ !!!!! 😉
Thanks Fit, Gypsy. Will check the Blood sugars this week ( after I buy the test strips, that have been expired for a few months now… Bad Lotus!)
Fit – IMO, It will be a case of “what happens in Melbourne stays in Melbourne”
Kathyven – Welcome, and feel free to vent / ask questions/share ups and downs here 🙂
Fast day today for me and working from home (can’t access many roads near my suburb due to flash floods and tree falls). They say the weather will ease by afternoon so should be back to normal soon.
So many temptations to eat at home!! plus my mum-in-law will make lunch for herself, and has been muttering about “kids not listening and not eating” lol 🙂

all the dishes look yummy 🙂
Morning all. Madam secretary, YOU should be the fly on the wall! and do take the minutes! Bugga, it might end up a teleconference if the poor ol’ nag (GG) gets stuck in Sydney (she could end up in yore stable, Lotus!).
Suejen, only one leg has shooting pain? Hip pain is usually distinguishable, by a localized ache ,often in the buttock when you sit or top of outer thigh. Do you recall what started it? any sudden pull on the back of the leg will be the hamstring ligament, It’ll give you curry walking and ache like the devil, but gets slowly better with rest (and support of the knee, no sudden twists).
But If it seems like a phantom and you can’t get a sense of the cause, it Sounds like sciatica. In which case it comes from the lower back (where the sciatic nerve crosses over ) It’s a diabolical devil, usually a pinch that needs investigating, but in the meantime, hot packs on lower back could be helpful, and a liniment to follow. Keep it warm (cold retracts muscle etc and tightens things up, good for bruise/tearing strain, but not pinched nerves, looking to relax the situation). Likewise, support the affected leg with a pillow (in most comfortable position) while trying to sleep, total relaxation of sleep takes away your muscle guarding and it’ll wake you up when the tension releases. Take Asprin, neurophen or an anti inflammatory if you’ve had them in the past. The strategy of pinched nerves is to reduce the swelling/inflammation caused by sudden injury, so they settle into their allotted space again(somewhat constricted when they pass through bony foramens(canals) If this is not addressed then the confining pressure compounds the problem, and is often why a ‘bad back’ becomes chronic. If it’s only a transient strain it will get better over rest and adequate time (six weeks is norm for any strain to revert to norm) if not it is medical province, treat it gently, either way. You can’t exercise a nerve to behave, I tried, (and backs are my nemesis!) hope that gives some help. a luck.
CG, hope the gods are on your side for the Melbourne trip, with this weather! Luck, too! Have a good day all, what was that motto? ‘eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we Die(t)’! gyps
Ha, ha, yore being facetious, boss! That’ll be five ‘n’ sixpence, thanks, but happy to trade for a fat hen (like granny did). If first we don’t succeed, there’s always the tea leaves to consult, deeper mysteries must wait for the full moon and in the meantime, we can do a broad spectrum crystal healing along with some voodoo, reiki and a shakra alignment. Whatever works, dearies, there’s always more ways than one to skin a cat!
I’ll give it a rest on the aches and pains,CG. Just about had everything cracked up at onetime or another and usually find the origin and figure out the fix (had mortuary anatomy training cos I didn’t go to any normal school, and it sort of put things in perspective, better than book graphics).
So happy to hear GG made it! You go girls! And as to the Whiskey and zero, shopping yesterday revealed a new coke variety, Now they have it in a bright green coke tin, sweetened with STEVIA. 35% les carbs and suger, so they reckon. I tried it with my bourbon. Not bad attall1 Cheers!
“You’ll Become Less Sweet with the 5:2 Diet (Google translated from Swedish).”
Saw this mentioned on an article (its actually a link to a proper study), but the words are kind of striking, especially me on a fast day lol

Aww, Did I neeed to know that, Lotus?!!! but thanks, ignorance doesn’t make it better. I waz pretending it waz soooo good for me! Ah well, back to the drawing board……I only have spirits sparingly these days because of the coke factor. Must persevere with soda water…or go straight….
Which begs the question, Up, Do the yanks really drink spirits neat? without any ice or water? Every movie or soap one sees they never have fridges on hand or mixes (like the brits do) the yanks just fish a bottle out of their office drawer etc and pour, or pass the flask???? true or false in reality? interesting how their livers survive if true… just trivia..
CG, agreed the hands on training was better grounding in practical nursing, nothing like working on an engine with the motor running to gain insight…. and dexterity! But it’s a uni degree on the politics of ‘safe practice’ in legal terms, these days. Bahhh is right! I bloody did both in the end, and don’t get me started on how shot the practical side of ‘nursing care’ has become! Machines do most of it and one has to be a technician to begin with! I am happy to know alternatives if one or other doesn’t work, but I prefer the tea leaves when it comes to those who profess they KNOW it all!
Just a belated EEk!# tag. I just discovered that two of my granddaughters and their young families were on board the cruise ship stranded (48hrs) off Sydney Harbour and not able to dock because of the stormy seas! Apparently no one wanted to worry Nana, but I got it all on their ‘Happy to make it home’ face book piccies. Phew!
Gyps, it’s still better than regular coke 🙂
I thought Scottish people too drank their scotch neat? I had a (Scottish) friend who used to laugh and laugh at the very Indian habit of adding soda, ice, coke etc to their scotch 🙂
and I think its a way cool thing to have a bottle of the old stuff in one’s desk drawer. Hmm, thinking now…
Glad to know that your granddaughters and family is docked safely in Sydney – though one could hardly cal it “dry land” today!
wow you guys certainly can talk.
sorry for my quietness I am here but have had sick kids Monday and Tuesday so have been cramming my work into half a day to keep the boss appeased.
FD Monday was ok,
have decided to do a few weeks 4:3 to really kick start my metabolism then I will drop back to 5:2
so fast days for me will be mon, wed, thurs. and if I survive I plan on doing this for just 2 weeks while I haven’t got cheer on and then back to the mon/thurs.
hope everyone is well and staying warm! its getting cold in melb!
Hi team. Lots of interesting post again. Fit, CG GG enjoy your Melbourne excursion. I’m sure you are going to have a ball. GG I’m glad you got out of Sydney safely. What terrible weather they are copping in NSW.The SES do a wonderful job. It’s so sad that people have lost their lives.
I went grocery shopping today and bought a trolley load of high fibre fruit, veg. etc. yesterday hubby went fishing so we are having lovely fried fish tonight. Instead of chips I’m cooking spuds ( high in fibre ) plus other veg. Not bothering to count the calories. Isn’t it great that no topic is taboo.
I too an a hospital trained nurse. We did plenty of theory but nursing is a practical skill and no amount of uni lectures teaches you that.
A dog groomer came to the house this morning and my little Pepper had lots of his wool shorn off. She was so good at it and so patient but skilled at her craft. That too can’t be learnt from a lecture. He looks a bit like Shaun the sheep now but as we are not entering a dog show just wanted him to be comfortable and easy to groom.
Take care all. And those of you in NSW stay safe. Re the whisky. I don’t really like it ( & I have Scots ancestors) but hubby has his with water. I like wine though which is no doubt one of the reasons why I needed to go on the 5:2.
DoggyXX
MoM – I am fasting today too. I have been doing 4:3 for some time now (Mon, Wed, Fri) to better managed non- FDs, as one less day to eat junk 🙂 . Hopefully that will all translate into better food habits in the long run.
Chatting on this thread helps to keep the mind off eating ( office breaks usually would mean a coffee/ tea/ snack on NF days around this time). Working rom home, so fighting temptations constantly. Not sure I can fast today properly, another few hours to go, lets see what happens…
Cheers Lotus,
my biggest issue is I am taking the kids out tomorrow night (one on camp so tradition dictates the others get taken out for dinner) but I have discovered there are a few options at our local Salsa’s that seem to be ok so will try have only 100 cals over the course of the day leaving me with more option for dinner.
have a great evening everyone. about to finish up at work and am feeling good yay for feeling good on a FD!!
Cheers M.O.M 🙂
So glad to hear you are working from home today Lotus, was thinking about how you were getting on this morning. Terrible storms.
Not sure if I’ll do a FD tomorrow with a now rather bored 7 yr old and one more day to go, I just might break out and be naughty. He still has a terrible cough but not lethargic anymore!! Only thing with going out though is I feel like we need to hang a sign around our necks saying ‘not contagious’ 🙂
The big lunch is almost here. Been thinking about it a lot (probably due to being cooped up with Mr 7 since last Sunday). Need all the goss girls!!!
Your dinner sounds good Doggie, fancy Pepper having a hair cut – cute.
You have my sympathy MoM with sick kids and having to fit work around that. You’re a Trojan. At least I don’t have to work otherthan extra clean ups thanks to a jealous cat!!!! Off to stir dinner, good FD to those doing it tomorrow. YY xx
Hi All!
Doggy – I’m afraid I won’t be with the gang in Melbourne, (I live in Ireland); wishful thinking on my part….it would be fantastic to have a big renunion, wouldn’t it! Glad to hear GG already there and the party is underway. CG – safe travels and have a blast…don’t give us a moment’s thought; we promise to behave ourselves while you’re away – don’t we gals?!!! 😉
Gypsy – so agree with you about the nursing situation; all the practical care is being taken out of their hands and they seem to spend all their time keeping up with paperwork because they are hogtied by a system that is too hung up on legalities instead of patient care. I know there are lots of wonderful nurses who are overworked and wards understaffed, which puts alot of pressure on them, but it’s the patients who suffer.
Lotus – you’re still at the research…I’m sure there must be a position on the committee for ‘research assistant’!! Well done you!
MoM – you sure have alot on your plate (pardon the pun!) at the moment; but keep the faith, you will succeed.
I don’t drink spirits myself, but I remember my lovely dad enjoying a whiskey or two at family parties. When anyone poured him one and asked what would he like in it, he invariably answered “more, please!!” 😉
Enjoy the rest of your week, at home or away! 🙂
I don’t mind the “research assistant” post Fit 🙂 Would at least accomplish my parent’s wish for an academic daughter 😉
And I like your dad’s idea of a good mixer – more of the same please ! 😉
Doggy – Another trained nurse in our midst!! Hey, this WOL must be really great, if its being practised by so many medicos!
Stuck to the FD, by totally not going in to the kitchen. I think I am at about 450 cals. It was a Herculean effort today though, what with the weather literally calling for comfort foods, and constant food temptations.
Fit, I am not sure I will survive cooler climes without stacking up more kilos lol
Doing ok today 🙂 600 cals so yes a little over but not a complete blow out.
Lotus lol @ your way of escaping the over eating on a FD. I decided the 2 remaining kids could fend for em selves (2min noodles were their choice) and I had baked beans with an egg fried in a non stick pan no oil. Was yummy
Fit – yep lot on my plate but that’s normal we are just a busy family and being a solo mumma makes it a little busier!
Yum yum – believe it or not working full time keeps me sane, I’m not the type of personality that copes well being stuck at home so I figure I’m better off out there earning instead of spending lol!
Fit & Lotus I agree…reckon that what happens in Melbourne will stay in Melbourne. They’ll probably be too embarrassed to tell us!
Thanks for the advice Gyps. It’s not actually shooting pain I’ve had that before when I had a prolapsed disc. This is like either a numbness or a low-grade pain but at night if I lie on that side it gets going. Let you know tomorrow what the physio says. Will try hotpack tonight thought Gyps. Taking Panadol Osteos at night.
GG made it to Melbourne yeah for FB & GG. CG have a safe trip tomorrow & a fabulous time together.
Ha Dogie Pepper looks like shaun the sheep! But so much easier to look after. And you & me together on the wine factor Dogie. Pity our bodies have to burn off the alcohol first isn’t it!
Well better stop posting as have to go out. Look back in later. suejen…and oh, if only I COULD take minutes for the get-together as a fly on the wall. After all that’s what Madam Secretary should be doing!! Interesting conversations I bet!!! Hope you all get on like a house on fire and sure you will. XXX
Ha Gypsy! Posting on the double…does that mean you’re seeing double too!! 😉
Doggy – your little Pepper must look so cute now, really a pity we can’t post photos here too!
Kathyven – great to welcome another nurse; buckets of wisdom and common sense to help us all out when we need it.
SJ – hope you enjoyed your evening and that you get your pain sorted as soon as possible.
Lotus – instead of kilos to keep warm, just pile on the layers of clothing; that way you can reveal your fab figure bit by bit as it gets warmer…bit like the dance of the seven veils!!! 😉 We Irish are experts at layered dressing because we can get all four seasons in one day here!
MoM – I think you’re amazing to cope so well and to have such a positive attitude – a real Aussie Determinator!
Good morning team! For fasters – hope you have a successful day, with planned foods and lots of water.
For the rest of us, eating well, with nutritious food (this one is a note to self 🙂 )
My scales have gone kaput, so have to buy one tonight, no weighing in today but I am feeling smaller.
I might just be doing in the seven veils in summer, Fit! Or being Oz, it might even be an… Itsy-bitsy teeny-weeny yellow-polka-dot bikini 🙂
Good Morning !! having a good day today, feeling super positive about FD !
So just popping my head in to say hello. will catch up on reply’s later today
have a fabulous day everyone!
Taco – hope you are having a good week this week!
Hi to any other new 5:2 ers! this group is amazing I’ve only been doing this 2 weeks (2nd week this week) and I feel so positive about it.
Smile, Be happy and have a fabulous day!
Cheers
M.O.M
Morning all ADers (not on the big lunch break). Just checking in to see s omething more interesting than a seven year old trying to touch his nose with his tongue!! Good thing he’s cute and the only grandson in the bunch. 🙂 Having a go at a fast day after pasta for dinner last nigh. Have to admit it was so good, first I’ve had in a couple of months. Always find it catches up with me even a couple of days down the track. Whatever happens the sun is shining and it looks like another beautiful day.
Hope Sydney is drying out a bit Lotus, have a good day everyone. YY xx
