Hi All!
Doggy – glad you had a good night’s sleep, it makes a huge difference, doesn’t it? I’m afraid it’s not me going to Melbourne…I wish!!! 🙁 Maybe one day…..
CG – so sorry to hear you in pain again and I hope the time flies until your surgery and lasting pain relief.
SJ – are all men the same?! I can so see my OH doing exactly the same thing!!
Hi Gunnadoit – love your name, you certainly are living up to it! What a fantastic loss since last Dec, well done you!
Gotta get on with my day, lots to do…pity it’s not a FD as I would be very distracted, maybe I’ll try a semi-fast, hmmmm?
CG so sorry your nerve block didn’t work but let’s hope the next one does, and that you get a firm date from your app’t with the specialist. You’re one tough cookie! My back’s playing up at present so I can sympathise with you – but nothing like yours. Off to physio for me.
Doggy hope you get another good night’s sleep tonight & that Pepper’s got into a good routine.
Gunnadoit what a great loss since December. That’s amazing.
Well didn’t make such healthy choices today, ate out for lunch & had a chicken hamburger & fries (not fast food). I’m going to blame the cold, wintry weather. So to compensate for dinner I had …….a glass of wine and my lemon/passionfruit pudding with cream!! Dessert for dinner and that was it. But I have learnt a good lesson with the hamburger. I can’t eat that much any more, really can’t. Have felt too full ever since then.
FB I think OH is worried since he retired. He becomes like an idiot in the kitchen when he’s a very competent intelligent man. Think he’s worried that he’s gunna have to take on more tasks in that area now, so whether it’s subconscious or not he behaves like a dumbass…he really does! Never mind most of the time I like my kitchen to myself anyway!
Hope you all sleep well team ready for another day in our journey, and CG FB GG one less sleep to go. Yeah for you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!! suejen
Morning all. Once again, thanks to all comments, you are such a lovely bunch!
Some interesting ideas in this thread today! Lotus, I may try your tip, the U.S seems very amenable to the doggy bag thing, it is quite normal here after a meal, so should work before as well!
The other day I was at a restaurant with american friends, we were 2 couples. Here it is common to order a salad as a starter. The other lady and I were the only ones who ordered a salad but my friend asked for her salad to be split to two plates. The waitress asked should she do it for both salads and my friend said yes. I didn’t really understand what had just transpired and was expecting that our 2 different salads were going to be mixed up so our plates would be half and half which I thought was weird. But no, they came out with 4 plates of salad and so my husband got half of mine and her husband got half of hers. There was plenty of food and it made my husband have to eat a salad he would never order in a million years so it was win/win! My friend tells me that this is quite normal too.
Also CG, the plate thing really helps, doesn’t it. I often serve my dinner on a smaller plate than my husband’s (although I am thinking I should be doing it for him too!).
At home in OZ, I only buy dinner sets with smaller dinner plates now.Not as easy to find but they are out there!
Fast day done but my husband is going out to lunch today so I have told him to have a “main” so I can give him a sandwich for dinner and have something light myself. Of course, I will have my corn thins for lunch! I am even half tempted to fast again.
You are probably all asleep now but I will look forward to tomorrow’s posts.
Well I sure was stupid to think that a day out shopping with my daughter might lend itself to a semi-fast. Boy, was I wrong! We went for lunch, but the menu didn’t have any really healthy choices so I chose a chicken wrap, which I thought wouldn’t be too bad. However, the wrap turned into a panini and came with chips, which I intended not to eat but couldn’t quite resist when they arrived. So, I blew my TDEE totally out of the water because, to make matters worse, when I came home, I couldn’t stop snacking. I thought I had cured myself of these bad habits, but it just goes to show that it doesn’t pay to get too complacent. Weigh-in day for me tomorrow – not expecting good news!! 🙁
SJ- roll over and play dumb – old trick for my OH too. 🙂 Gotta luv’em for it.
Gunnadoit – that is just amazing loss!! Wow!
Uptight- Good on you, for adjusting this WOL to your (very interesting and adventurous!) life!
For Aussies, and other countries where this brand is available – the Corelle range has lovely smaller size dinner plates (Dessert Plates) – they are bigger than a B & B / quarter plate but smaller than the bigger-than-Ben-Hur version. Also very light and durable.
Fit – my problem in life is the utter lack of discipline on non-fasting days ( or in general?). I have decided to “cure” this habit of eating c**p on nf days by fixing one habit at a time. So this month, I have switched from Skim cappuccino every morning to a long black with equal. Will move to non-sweetened coffee slowly. Its a mind thing more than anything else… Naught mind! lol
Next in line – sweet bakery stuff like chocolate croissant etc. Had one yesterday, didn’t even really like it as my taste buds can’t take too sweet but kept eating it. No idea why?
Also, will post recipe in the other thread (Aussie Determination Recipe) for this dish my mum-in-law made this morning for our lunch. Very traditional to where we hail from, and light and refreshing with just four ingredients – Black-Eyed Beans and Pumpkin Stew.
Hello all,
Read this interesting article with great tips on eating out:
http://www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/diet-and-fitness/how-to-eat-out–and-keep-your-waistline-despite-the-crumbed-fried-dressed-temptations-20150412-1mdwlz.html
CG, ader”s and newbies what I found worked for me with the 25kg loss was……..
Using the fitness pal app to record what I consumed, real eye opener made me evaluate my food choices.
Always tried to stay within my tdee on fast days and non fast days at around a quarter of my recommended intake, having said that had the occasional blow out.
Beauty of the system is just get back to the program. Feel much healthier and in time have found other ways of dealing with stress instead of going straight for a krispie cream donught.
I Just consider the fast days as cleansing days which help the body recover, no grog etc.
Hope this helps good luck to all
Fit , your day out sounded like so much fun , I would have eaten the chips too 🙂
Countrygal, I made burgers with the lot and was very generous with my one ! I could have done with much less. I also ate a chocolate bonbon and a nice of glass of wine 🙂 I will be doing as you say – smaller portions , smaller plates and I will also plan my meals and everybody else’s lunches/dinner for tomorrow’s fast – my second 🙂
Lotus : I need self discipline , I eat when I’m stressed, happy, sad, sick, I have not been able to get to the recipe page but I will try again 🙂
Suejen, your dinner sounds like mine 🙂 I will make baked apples for dessert tonight 🙂 -?i am a slow and hopeless cook but I make the apples in the microwave 🙂 I am like your OH I just took over the cooking from my husband to give him a break – he has been cooking for almost 30 year 🙂
Wow- gunnadoit, 25 kilos , that’s fantastic! Uptight , I will now only cut and paste , I lost another loooong post today – again 🙁
Suejen , thank you for sharing the recipe 🙂
Doggy : I like the 10 kilo milestones , I think that is a good way to stay motivated 🙂 I’m glad Pepper let you sleep, Taco gets me up around 4 to pee and of the Fox gets out, she does not want to get back inside, she wants to chase possums 🙂 ..and I wait , and wait .. For the possums’ sake and then I can’t get back to sleep 🙁
Sunken, I’m going to use your idea of placing food in Tupperwares before serving – we can take them for lunch the next day 🙂
CG Thanks for your concern. Happily for me my back pain only stuck around for 24 hours. I had to resort to Tramadol. I can relate only too well to the burnig sensation. It’s like someone is sticking a red hot needle into ones spine. I’m so sorry your nerve block was unsuccessful. Hopefully the surgery will cure you once and for all. I’ve read with interest that you’ve been to a chiropractor quite often. I personally am very sceptic of them but if it’s helped you that’s all that matters.
Wow Gunnadoit what a fantastic weight loss. Well done you. Something I’ve noticed since starting the 5:2 is that I’ve completly gone off sweet things. – not chocolates though.! I used to like a bit of honey instead of sugar on my porridge. Now I find it sickengly sweet. I don’t add sugar to anything. I wonder what it is that makes us yearn for something nice to munch on. The mind is a very powerful thing and we can change our way of thinning by working on it. Did anyone happen to see Michael’s documentary on the male and female brain? It was very interesting. Too much info to put here but it seems as though our brains are really quite similar but we become programmed to think that women can’t do maths, science etc. so we just reinforce it by thiking we can’t do it. Also interesting finding re autism. I have an autistic grandson. It been found that it mostly afflicts males and that there is a lot of testosterone in utero of the foetus that goes on to become autistic. OK enough of that.
FD tomorrow so I’m off to plan my meals.
Cheers all Doggy
Catching up on a lot of posts had a busy day yesterday
UP – I changed our dinner plates about a year ago to what general trader term and entrée plate. Its big enough for the kids and makes me have a smaller portion. I encourage anyone who is struggling with portion sizing to do that and get smaller bowls too which I have done. Sounds like you are having a good time in the states ! I agree splitting meals is a good idea, I’m lucky/unlucky that my partner doesn’t eat a lot (never has) and we split things a lot of the time when we are out however I need to get myself out of the bad habit of finishing his off if he has leftovers and let the kids polish the extra off (they burn it all off anyway)
Fit – I hear you on the snacking yesterday unfortunately the wheels fell off the wagon after dinner and I got the munchies pretty sure I didn’t go too far over my TDEE but I had to tell myself to stop snacking and went to bed!
Lotus – now that’s a good idea curing yourself of one bad habit at a time. I think I will start trying that. My morning tea break coffee is being replaced with a peppermint tea and I am aiming to drink a bottle of water before morning break then again after before I have lunch at about 12.30-1. I’m also going to start getting back to my knitting and crochet after dinner it helps keep me distracted till bed time without munching!
CG – wise words about not thinking about the fast day until it is here. I agree that taking things a day at a time is best and least stressful
TACO – baby steps , being a newbie too I didn’t have a great day yesterday but today is a new day!
As for me – fast day went well, it helped that it was both busy at work and our busiest evening out of the week at home, littlest miss dances until 7 so I rushed home with her2 big brothers and made them dinner (cheat quesadillas , wraps with ham and cheese put in the frypan to brown) and made hers to take with us. biggest hurdle was there wasn’t enough time for my dinner so I was hungry by 7.30 when I got home and starving by 8 when my dinner was cooked. Lesson learnt to plan something for a Monday night that I can reheat either before dance pickup or after when we get back.
yesterday was a good day I wasn’t too hungry but made sure I ate well , but after dinner I was starving and may have eaten a little bit much.
I am feeling positive and I did talk to one of the ladies here I work with yesterday and she is interested in looking at 5:2 as well so I am going to lend her the book might be nice to have someone to fast with on a Thursday (she doesn’t work here on a Monday)
Today is lovely and sunny and I am going to have lunch have a great day everyone
Oh my one tip for anyone who does like a glass of wine (works only with white wine) is to put half a serve (75ml ish) in a glass add some soda water to top it up. For me this lessens the effect of the sulphites in the wine but also I can have 2 glasses and really I have only had one glass of wine
Hi Gang. So I’m back from my granny run. (I did not fast at all in that 10 day period)Did feel like a bloated whale, but when I got back on my scales I’m amazed. I think I actually lost weight once the bloats went away. And it was such a relief to fast and get rid of them! To feel light, bright and chuffed as hell with No great damage done! After one FD and two ‘carefullish’ days I managed to weigh in at 85.3kgs. That’s the lower end of my 2ish kilo seesaw over the past month. So I at least maintained (and isn’t that as good as a holiday gets?) And I am game to post again! (because I have a positive worth sharing!)
After a few months and even moderate weight loss success, one realizes It doesn’t matter about the weight (except as a vanity focus to get us started on the real event) it will go as you feel better. The body WANTS to feel better and it helps you, even with the merest assist, if you give it a break from the junk much of our food has become. Feeling healthier and great is the real event of 5:2. I doubt you’ll ever find a better tool to a happier life! after all, WE ARE WHAT WE EAT.
Yep, all you great achievers and hopeful, newly determined, Take heart and whatever you do, don’t give up. This WOE is a WOL that will adjust to whatever your circumstances and will NOT let you down as long as you give it time and just 2 days a week of lower intake and a bit less whenever you can. It’s like a friend, not the bogeyman ‘diet’ one dreads. You grow to love it!
And I grow convinced that the odd feast period does more good than harm! In fact, It’s thrilling to know I am finally in control of my weight problem. The ‘problem’ has always been NOT BEING ABLE TO STICK TO A CONSTRICTING DIET/EXERCISE REGIME FOREVER! AND FALLINGT OFF IT IN A BIG,FAT WAY! Along with the fall comes that feeling of depression and failure. Forget that! Friends don’t let you fall and 5:2 comes with friends who know exactly what you need. Whether it be a gloat or a whinge. Welcome to our newbies!
So impressed with the progress everyone’s made,.(including Doggy’s Mutt!)keep losing the page, but saw ?Up has a new grandchild? and is it Lotus being corny in the US? GG’s packing for the party with FB and CG in Sydney and suejen’s trying to train hubby in the kitchen?! But Fit, take heart, my post is relevant to you. I don’t think any of us should worry about falling off the wagon as long as we get back on.
Hi, CG, Sorry your back is still playing up, but your inspiring presence is still the glowing star we follow. Chin up, love, we are all in your corner. And just think how much worse your back would be if you had not taken the steps we now follow. 20 kilo weight loss is pretty awesome, mate. Am still not up on all I missed, but it’s good to be home.
I had a great time and sampled all Easter had to offer, including wine, chocolate and roast dinners , spread over a 10 day period of shovelling food into two teenagers and an active sportsman, plus a far too skinny daughter-in-law. Apart from feeling a little guilty over letting them eat their favourite junk food, I did manage to begin my (15yo) Grandson’s training on distilled substances. He now believes he’s hooked on bourbon. (fortunately it’ll be some time before he can afford the real thing!) Cheers! The gypsy.
Oh Gyps! I wish I had a gramma like you!! Did you also train the grandie on vodka soaked watermelon / other fruit (if its got fruit its good innit?) 🙂
But really great post, esp. your realization re the WOE being our friend not FOE (note rhyme 🙂 )
And I am (sadly) in Sydney, not having fun in US. uptight is though 🙂
Well afternoon everyone. Getting later and later with my posts (morning sleep-ins!) but back to work next work so then back to normal. Gyps great to have you back & you have come back with such insightful words re 5:2 and its beauty luvit. So right about the big fall with restrictive diets & the big down that follows & then I chuck it all in.
Lotus I’m with you on eating c#%@ on NF days so I think I need to follow your lead & fix one thing at a time. I’m excellent at home generally, have stopped night snacking, it’s when I go out that I have this mindset of having to splurge like Why should I have a soup and a roll….I can have that at home anytime?! So that’s my first challenge to fix up.
Well now to approach my NFD and to make some healthier choices, no not restrictive but not heading for every darn thing that I’ve been dreaming about. Will still be a wine (I hang out for those) & some yummy stuff – just not ALL of it! We do need to set a bit of a balance between FD and NFD I think if you know what I mean. I mean the whole point for me of 5:2 is to become healthier (lose weight but also general health benefits) so do need to change some long-ingrained habits for the better.
Have a wonderful day all with our super fabulous WOL. suejen
Great to hear from you CG! Thanks for the welcome home.
lotus too, I appreciate the attempted clarity ????dunno who dun wot, just wish you’d all keep still! And the problem is I have Nooo gramma, petal (so who gets to make the rules anyway?). Comes of never going to an actual school. Where such things get drummed to the general beat. I just flipped the page and turned off the boring bits. So I’m a trifle off beat, heh, heh, and lookout, it’s catching! Now you’re getting the hang of putting grammatical crimes into ratty rhymes!( and wot can they do about ‘poetic licence’, really?)Onya’.
And CG, I think you explain stuff very well. It’s basically what I was trying to get across. The fasting puts us in control of the weight loss and we get to understand that that’s a sure thing, depending on how serious we get about shifting the load. It just means we can take pit stops and maintain a weight as long as we like, too. (like when you really DON’T want your togs to fall off till the new season ones come out, huh?) nifty, I reckon. And I also agree it’s often wise to give the back time to settle after a possible strain. It takes the usual six weeks (as for any strain in a weight bearing complex) and then some, for the spinal nerves to settle. Touchy animals! agree a good chiro can do magic (tho they are not so easy to find and can be risky). If you are in good hands then you should know by the way you feel after a treatment,(ie, if he knows his stuff, that’s NOT sorer than when you came in). So if you have faith in him, ask about exercises to strengthen your abdo muscles without causing further back strain. They certainly exist. You may know this already, and a rehab physio certainly will. I mention it because It’s the one thing that got me back on my feet. Even after surgery I was hardly mobile for 2yrs till I got wise to the need for getting the abdo muscles strong enough to pull the back into alignment. Even tho I had packed extra lard on by then, it helped enormously. Now whenever my back hurts I know I’ve been getting slack and get back to doing them at least three times a week (preferably before I get out of bed). But it needs to be the right ones for your particular problem. So you need to trust the advisor knows what they are dealing with. (and your own judgement, mainly, you can do that I reckon) I also use Emu oil rub, it’s magic for inflamed muscles. I feel for you, luck, mate. Enjoy MELBOURNE! gyps.
What a blast of fresh air you are, Gypsy. We have missed your style and verve 🙂
Welcome newbies, and well done everyone on their choices – including plate sizes. We only use lunch-sized plates for meals now, helps to keep the portions in perspective.
After-dinner snacking has been the final tiger to tame, and still tries to get out of the cage if I am enjoying a wine in the evening. I had an alcohol-free week last week, and a careful weekend, and have been rewarded with my lowest weight – just want to have a kg or so wriggle-room now.
Best to you all from freezing NZ.
B xx
PS…cackle… and CG… don’t think I missed it, boss. I promise I’ll confine the ‘spirited’ posts to only the odd staggering clutch for support on the turps. Ah, gimme a home among the gum trees… etc…it’s blowing a gale here….dang still steam keeps getting into the aircon vents…. ah well…it’s an ill wind……bottoms up, ladies!
Hmmm, and it’s all so tidy around here! My organized chaos is ruined! CG, you’re right about that, too. My “Irish hoosekeeper” is ex British red beret (paratrooper)Dratted man just lives to upset my system!, but he’s still a high flyer at 72, so I’m in! He plays Santa in my sidecar on the Xmas toy runs. …heh, heh, terrible hard headed sort, but oh, so easily led… he won’t have a barr of fasting, just accepts the he’s not getting fed when I do. (so of course he starves in protest) we are both trimming down nicely.(much to the relief of my bike springs!) . Indeed Barata, It’s luvly to hear from you, too. xxx
lol Gypsy & CG – I have another half hour of work to get through then get the minions and get them organised before I can indulge in anything medicinal 🙂 which tonight will only be one glass I think (well 2 if I do it my usual way with soda water ) and I am going to get my cross stitch out tonight to keep me entertained after dinner so I don’t snack!
The afternoon has gone far too slowly today and I am completely over hump day! I am looking forward to the challenge of the second fast tomorrow however I might try something new and have something small in the morning and less for lunch maybe a soup and some fruit. I really like having a banana each day they seem to keep me full for a while and I only ever buy the small ones in the aldi prepacked bags.
anyway enough from me I guess I should be working!
catch up on more later !
Welcome back GYPSY…. so glad you are back . You stay away for so long ! Don’t you know how much we miss you!.You had such a wonderful time. Your one hell of a lucky NANA …Your grandson may be the next best stiller in the country under your tutition.

Andrew of Castlemaine will also be joining us for a LLLLLLOOOOONNNNNGGGGG lunch.
Have a wonderful evening DETERMINATORS… FAST day tomorrow .. Don’t forget the 4 P’S PLANNING ,PREPARATION.PERSISTANCE and PATIENCE…….GO GAL XXXXXX
Yo, GG, thanks for the welcome home. Gypsies are bound to travel, but it’s good to be home. I’m excited for you travelling to the big smoke to meet the guru, give her a big hug for me! It is just so comforting that you and CG let us rave but keep us on track! keep up the good work!
Mayhem, at the risk of being forward, can I give you a suggestion? Most of us have found that the later we eat solids on FD’s the better we fare. And fruit is usually a trigger for hunger pangs. It has natural sugars, true, but any sugar seems to wake up the beast! I never read the book, but I find that on Fast days, sticking to less carbohydrates and more protein (like boiled or poached egg) or a tin of fish on lettuce as a bread substitute, helps satisfy and doesn’t wake the beast. You are doing great. Luck to you! Gyps.
Thanks gypsy, i tried not to have anything till lunch time on fast day 1 and I managed apart from a sudden bout of nausea but I think honestly it was due to the green tea I had. I’ll try a peppermint tea in the morning (fast day 2) and I’ll be busy tomorrow morning and distracted because we have a high school tour to go on for ds1. So I’m sure I will last till lunch, and I am have made a gorgeous chicken broth with barley and loads of veg for my dinner tomorrow night 🙂
Anyone have trouble getting to the recommended cal intake on NFD? I use my fitness pal and have eaten plenty today but I’m still according to the 5:2 recommendations about 400 calls under! And I’m not feeling hungry either . Even allowing I may estimate upto 100 calls short over the day that’s still 300 cals!
Is anyone of mfp that wants to be friends on there so I can see what you guys eat and compare? Or get tips from you looking at my meal plans .
Just finished dinner and I have had a better day! I packed tupperwares with left overs for tomorrow – I was tempted to scrape the pan, nut rinsed it out and placed it into the dishwasher 🙂 I also had a cup-a-soup to last me till dinner! There was a bread roll left over from yesterday and I cannot believe it is still there. Thank you CG for your suggestions 🙂 and thank you and Gg for suggesting I speak to FB. I’ve checked out the recipe thread and there are some great things 🙂
Hi All!
Wow! Such a lot to catch up on since I last checked in…I blame Gypsy; she seems to have caused a mini riot of responses with her wit and fun. So glad to have you back, Gypsy, I had a great laugh at your attempts to get your head around all the news since you’ve been away. We missed you loads! Xx
Lotus – thank you for words of wisdom and for your research on eating out; very interesting article. You’re so good and thoughtful. <3
CG – thank you too for the balance you bring to this WOL, you’re absolutely right that a little blip here and there is not important, the overall picture is still good and the difference between my mind and body from four months ago is huge. As ever, you are the voice of experience and I am so glad for the perspective you bring.
Taco – sorry you’re having trouble with posting, but keep checking in and don’t give up trying. I did enjoy my day out, but found that the junk food was not at all satisfying, so that’s another lesson learned!
Barata – good to hear from you and big congrats on lowest weight to date! Woohoo! Sympathise with you about the cold….very changeable here too, never know what clothes to wear any more and just hate feeling cold. Brrrrr!
Hope the 4 muskateers enjoy Melbourne; but reckon there’s no fear that they won’t!!! The big question is whether Melbourne will survive their visit!!!! 😉 🙂
Hello ADs
A very late post from me. Really caught up at work.
Fasted today n finished at 375 cals!!!! Happy with that…..
A big warm welcome back Gypsy, love your posts!!!!
And yes very excited to meet my 5:2 buddies in almost a week. All excited!!!!
MoM and Taco, you two are very good at planning. Thats a very positive start!!!
Taco if you need any ideas about food, happy to help.
Congrats GG for breaking that plateau!!!
CG, such an inspiration you are!! I look forward to your morning inspiration posts.
And yes MoM, very good advise from gypsy.
Fit, LOL, really hope that Rest of Melbournians can handle our charm 😉
Another day done and dusted. Made some better choices today AND went for a good long walk. That’s better. Gee we’re all steaming along aren’t we. Learning stuff about food about ourselves about portion sizes about planning ahead. MoM and Taco sounds like you’ve got the planning & preparation parts absolutely covered – well done. As to MFP I never click on the Complete this Entry Button as it’s likely to spit a hissy fit. You don’t need it to use MFP. You know what you’ve entered & whether it fits a FD or NFD. And the predictions about what you will lose are not accurate due to our 5:2 WOE anyway.
Had some yummy tomato soup out of the freezer today from our tomatoes for lunch & a lowcal version of Beef Stroganoff that I was craving for dinner. It used yoghurt instead of the usual sour cream so much lower. Not quite as scrummy as the original recipe but quite a reasonable substitute. Yummy for a winter’s night.
Hang in there with your aussie determination gang and reap the benefits of less weight to drag around, nicer clothes to wear, easier to exercise (noticed that today – hills were easier) more fit and flexible and all the other health benefits of 5:2. I just can’t wait for the day when I feel comfortable in my own skin – my goal. suejen
Suejen: your dinner sounds really nice, I’ve noticed that yoghurt is a substitute for cream, I actually have creamy Greek yoghurt recipe – all one needs is a pot , no thermometers etc I will posted it for everyone on the recipe thread – it’s so easy to make and it turns out perfect every time! I went for a walk today , I always do but the chihuahuas are very slow, they mainly sniff and pee. I can’t wait to be feeling comfortable, my belly is always in the way.
