  • Hi Ruthi, 🙂 I’m still seeing how things get on.Yesterday I lost 2 kilos!!! Just water of course so not real weightloss. Went to the loo about 27 times! 🙁
If that is a first day reaction I don’t know. Though I can’t imagine I can pee 2 kilos every day lol!

It worries me that the 5 ‘feast’ days will give enough sugar to feed the duretic / glucose effect. But I have to monitor and see how that goes.

I may be delusional but I hope my pill taking is just to tide me over till I have lost enough weight to lower my bp. Though I do recognise that many otherwise healthy living thin people have too high bp so maybe losing weight won’t do it for me. I also recognise that my fairly strong family history of cardiovascular illness makes it necessary to act about my high bp.

I’m going to talk to my doctor on Monday about the posbilty of using an ACE inhibitor instead of the diuretic as ACEs seem not to affect blood sugar.
We are a bit ahead of mainsteam medicine by following Drs F & M. So our day to day GP’s can seem less flexible.

Mostly I do 5:2 but would like to try ADF from Dr Fung. I’m just following his videos. I live in Europe.

The resistance to fasting is still so great that an enforced, gastric band fast will be the way for many people I’m afraid. 🙁 I mean, I’ve been fat to some extent most of my life and coupled with the wrong advice about fat and sugar, I’m not surprised really that people get things wrong with weight management.
Many of the television programmes here about fat people losing weight still imply that they are lazy and greedy.
Like the tobacco industry, the food and dietry advice industries have interfered with science in a bad way that has lead to this obesity epidemic. I know it well, I still can revert to thinking about fat and calories in the old way!

Hope you are well Ruthi 🙂 xx

Low-Carbohydrate/High-Protein Diet improves Diastolic Cardiac Function and the Metabolic Syndrome in Overweight-Obese Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

“fasting and postmeal triglyceride levels decreased by almost 30% in spite of the higher relative percentage of fat intake, demonstrating that serum lipid levels in overweight type 2 diabetes patients do not passively mirror the amount of consumed fat.”

    Merry Christmas All!

Speedy- I got tired of waiting for test results to come via snail mail, so I called and the med assistant read the results. My trigs 103, blood sugar 92, both good, or at least okay. Even HDL was 63, still okay. The kicker was my LDL, which was 173! So doc wants me to make another appt. to discuss putting me “back” on cholesterol lowering med. I have never been on cholesterol lowering med and don’t wanna be! So, this is a mixed bag of health results for me. My BP is wavering. It’s sometimes up and sometimes down, but as I mentioned before, used to always be up, even treated.

Sorry that you’ve had to start BP med. Keep your spirit up and before long, you won’t need it. 😀

    2 every1!!!!!!!!!!!

    happy safe holiday 😀

Hello Piper 🙂 Snail mail is probably going via the North Pole at the moment!
    I’ve converted your figures to mg/dl -> mmol/l I can’t think in mg/dl!
    Trigs 103 / 1.16
    Glucose 92 / 5.1
    HDL 1.62 / 63
    LDL 4.4 / 173
My total cholesterol was 5.5 now 5.3

Well done ob the good trigs and glucose figures. 🙂 xx
But yes, that pesky hdl/ldl ratio is a bit of a bummer isn’t it.
    For me too.
My HDL was 1.0 is now 0.9 so gone down even further 🙁 And my LDL was 3.9 now 4.0 so gone up slightly further 🙁 They are not listening to me lol!

In a fb conversatio I had with Dr Fung, he said to me:
“Cholesterol levels may come down in time, but it often takes months before you see the results. High blood cholesterol levels are only dangerous in the long term and whether treatment with statins is necessary is debatable. Blood pressure may also come down with weight loss, but again, I expect that to take months before you see any results in that regard. Don’t worry, though, both cholesterol and blood pressure often do improve with sustained weight loss.”

On Sunday I rebelled and didn’t take the bp pill – but on Monday I capitulated and took it again! I was feeling so odd with it. Whether that was psychopsomatic – it could be, I’m not sure. But felt odd and headachy – and my eyes felt dry. But I Googled and frightened myself so bougt some Optrex and started taking it again.

I’m not sure if personally I’d take staitins for cholerestol yet. Bp frightens me more. I’m not sure how long I’ve had and I don’t believe the science about high cholerestol is corrent (I am a totally non-medical person!)

How long have you been on 5:2? I started in September so am hoing that by spring summer 2014 I will see bp reduction. I’m 55 and very overweight so there is a lot to undo lol! My last figures moved my BMI from Super obese down to Morbid obese – sounds much worse but apparently isn’t!

Maybe if you haven’t been doing 5:2 for long you could negotiate a 6 month hiatus with your doctor. It does take courage to go against their advice though doesn’t it? Especially when they seem so sure. It’s a bit lie being called to the headmistress’ study!!! My family history is my weak link and the thing I can’t change. It’s why I agreed to the bp pills.

Try to put it out of your mind for a few days. Let your subconscious work on it and see what it comes up with!

Best wishes for Christmas and a Healthier New Year 🙂

    Hi USA (wave!) xx

    Happy day after Christmas All!

Speedy- my take on statins is pretty much what everyone else on this post feels. What I do wonder is if losing weight plays a part in temporary rise in cholesterol? I have tried to google it, but haven’t found out anything.(Maybe because there is nothing to find?) I have already been fighting the LDL battle for years- but this time was by far the worst that I’ve ever had. Guess I’ll have to start exercising again. At one time was 84/108.

My BP is by far a more dangerous thing, to my mind. It is coming down and I bet yours will, too. I’ve been on 5:2 since officially Sept 5, but had lost 3lbs already- so really maybe mid August. (You mean that you didn’t hear my scream when I stepped on the scale?-I was sure people all around the world would have!) I dieted a few years ago, top weight 163, and lost 17 lbs by hard effort. I know this doesn’t sound like much-that you have a harder problem. Look at short people BMI- ask USA. I am small and by small, I do not mean not overweight, or even short, but small for being short. Started out as a bit tubby in a string-bean family-and while not obese according to BMI tables, everyone knew I was overweight. (My first gynecologist told me to lose 5 lbs and I weighed 108! by this time I had already dropped 14 lbs- was quite disheartening) So strap 60 lbs to that, some all over but mostly on stomach and you can understand why I was concerned about metabolic syndrome. It is about proportion. I am 58.

    Anyway, I’m pulling for you!

    happy & safe new year!!!!!!!

HI USA! Nice to see you 🙂 Happy New Year. xx
Had to Google what AGEs are and find it hard to concentrate!
It reminded me though of something Dr F had said about how picked food is good.
    Here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20497781
It seems to be saying esecially meat cooked (fried) becomes high AGE. That boiling is better than roasting or frying?
It sort of make sense to me – but I have to say also I wouldn’t say I really understood it. All new concepts to me.

Really just saying Hi and good to hear from you. Hope you are starting to feel better. xx

Oh PS, it also sort of fits in with what I’ve been reading about Atkins’ idea that protein was OK. Dr F etc seem to be saying more fat rather than more protein is the way to go.
Sorry, I hold my hand up to muddy concentration this morning.

Wonder if this inspired raw food eating?

Hello me again. Hope all your regulars are all in the fasting pink 🙂

I was just thinking about things and wondered if there is anyone doing 2 consecutive fasting days? I think I remember Dr M say in the programme that it was OK to do so? As the day after a fast my eetlust (as the Dutch call appetite!) is much less. As I’m struggling to get back up on the donkey after disruptive Christmas and New Year, maybe I’m clutching at straws here 🙁
    Any thoughts or experience though?

Hope you are well USA 🙂 xx

    in quotes ur question

USA, just an aside, I am watching the Town Hall video with Dr. Fung. THe one with the man called Old Goat and Mr. Yes!
I was wondering really, just wanted your thoughts. Dr F mentions metabolic syndrome. Is he saying, do you think, that metabolic syndrome, – high bp, cholesterol, triglycerides, high sugar etc. are all caused by too much insulin?
I know as a kidney specialist he is mostly looking at sugar/insulin but he seems to be linking insulin with all those ‘heart’ measures. I’d ove it of he was as I am trying to get all those measures down! Had the blood taken for me test today. Almost didn’t go but thought – woman up and go! So I went 🙂

Mediterranean Diet Alone May Lower Diabetes Risk

“followed more than 3,500 older adults at high risk of heart disease. The researchers assigned them to one of three groups: a Mediterranean diet with extra-virgin olive oil, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with mixed nuts, or a low-fat diet, which served as the comparison. They did not get special instructions on losing weight or increasing their physical activity.””The researchers followed the men and women, aged 55 to 80, for about four years, between 2003 and 2010”

    http://annals.org/article.aspx?articleid=1811025

remember dr fung said that the med diet no one tells us that many of them fast

Hello all, but especially USA, glad you are still with us, even if you won’t tell us about the job (I used to be a career coach so am always interested).

I’m fine, except that today I have a mega headache. The most effective thing for my heads has been a double dose of ibuprofen, but of course since the onset of the gastritis I am not allowed ibuprofen, so I just have to suffer. Dark chocolate helps a little, but that is sugar!

For Christmas I got Perlmutter’s ‘Grain Brain’ and Lustigs ‘Fat chance’ which I am wading through(what a peculiar wishlist I have!!). I read on another board that you need to do 100 days sugar free to hope to break from the habit/addiction. I have reached day 3 and eaten chocolate for my headache so that’s not been good!

    Some general comments

I am not sure where Dr F mentioned protein, but I have read in several places that too much animal protein is not good. The maximum seems to be 0.4 grammes for each pound of your weight – equates to about 50g for the normal woman. You can eat as much vegetable protein as you like, though, so nuts and pulses would be fine.

As for eating raw, that idea has been around for many years, at least as far back as the beginnings of naturopathy in the 19th century. The idea is that the enzymes and some vitamins are destroyed by heating. Its a nice idea and easy to do if you live somewhere tropical, not so easy in the UK, or northern US in winter. I try to ensure that I eat something raw with at least two meals, but sometimes its only a carrot or an apple.

I’m sure there is more, but I have to go to an appointment with a cardiologist for Seamus doggie. He’s in a bit of a mess, poor boy.

Ruthi, hope it went well with Seamus. xx So worrying when our dogs are poorly.

Hi USA, I think my posts over Christmas (to stay sane!) may have read to you like new references but that is not so – it was just me musing. I’m sorry if it read differently. I’ll just try to pick up the questions with bullet points ok? 🙂

    * The colour chage is not here yet I think. But it – or something similar is being worked on. 🙂

    * Nooo! I’m of course not telling you that your diuretic made you type2diad! 🙂 But if you read the side effects of some duiretics – the one I am on for example – one possble side effect can be to raise blood sugars slightly. So for some people, like me, borderline pre/diabetic, that can be enough to push them into values that diagnose diabetic. You and I know of course it is a spectrum not an absolute. But I feel it is something to be aware of when I am trying to lower my blood sugar that this pill might make that a little bit harder.

I cannot believe that any doctor would advise you over the internet to stop blood pressure medicine. I’m sure he didn’t mean that.
I am learning that which bp medicine suits a person is very personal and varies according to many factors. I was disappointed that my bp didn’t drop with some weighloss but I am hoping with more weightloss it may. But many thin people have too high blood pressure so it may not.

    * “where does dr fung say fat more than protein” There are two points here: 🙂

Firstly, probably I am extrapolating far too much here and really was just musing about how to fit together all the various findings of what is good to do.
What I was thinking about was the success of Atkins; I have friends who ate a lot of protein and fat and lost a lost of weight. This is my personal, non-researched feeling, but that excessive protein is not too great. Dr Fung talks about fat not being the baddie (in part 6) I don’t know what he thinks about protein. That is me putting ideas together to make a diet up for myself. Sorry if I mislead you.

    Secondly, I found this:
    http://www.dietdoctor.com/another-diabetic-healthier-leaner-lchf
A reply on a site from Dr Fung that mentions protein amongst other topics:
I copied and pasted his reply. It’s a nice summary I think.

    ” Dr. Jason Fung
    December 24 2013 20:27
The dawn phenomenon is related to gluconeogenesis (new glucose production from the liver). The so called counter-regulatory hormones (ephinephrine, growth hormone and cortisol) typically follow a circadian rhythm. They peak just before you wake up – around 4 am or 5 am. This is a normal phenomenon. It is thought that they prepare the body for the upcoming day by increasing blood sugar. The tern counter-regulatory refers to the fact that it tends to counter the low blood sugar of the preceding sleeping period by stimulating new glucose production.

So these counter-regulatory hormones tend to spike around 4 am or 5 am and therefore stimulate gluconeogenesis in the liver. Liver makes glucose and therefore blood sugar is higher. That is why you notice the dawn effect even though you did not eat any sugar in the night – the body is producing it from the stores of sugar in the liver.

In patients with insulin resistance, this effect is more pronounced and sugars tend to be a little higher. The implication is that sorry, yes, you still have some “remaining metabolic syndrome” left – as the last belly fat also indicates.

The key is to lower insulin levels since a high insulin level is what leads to insulin resistance. Low carb, high fat is a good method of reducing insulin, but not the only one. High fiber, increased vinegar are other ways. Intermittent fasting is yet another way to lower insulin levels. They are not mutually exclusive, and you may certainly mix intermittent fasting with a low carb high fat diet for instance.

Lower protein intake may also help since intake of protein, especially animal sources may also raise insulin levels. So lowering dietary protein may also be beneficial in reducing insulin.
    Dr. Jason Fung”

    Take care everyone 🙂
    Best wishes.

Thanks Speedy. Cardio vet says not heart failure (which is good!) but definitely got much worse since the last investigations so £800 worth of tests etc next week to work out what is going on before he goes off to the RCVS (Royal College of Vet Surgeons for you non-Brits) to see if we can understand out what is going wrong with his hormones and making him a baldy dog. Thank goodness for insurance! It may cost me an arm and a leg, but means that I don’t have to make decisions on grounds of cost!

It seems to me that what Dr Fung (and others) are saying is that only fat fails to raise your insulin levels, so from the diabesity point of view that is where you need to get your calories from. Oh, and fructose, of course, but that will cause a fatty liver, so not a good source of energy!

Atkins was successful because it cut out sugar and raised fat consumption as well as protein. But in the long run its still not good to eat too much protein. I need to find the reference for that one, although I think we discussed it in the early stages of this thread.

Non Brits will be interested to hear that there is to be a new campaign in the UK, run by the group that campaigned so successfully to villify tobacco, but this time against sugar. A discussion on the radio was quite interesting. The leader of the campaign was saying, quite rightly, that sugar is the next tobacco – empty calories and the cause of metabolic syndrome. And that saturated fats had been wrongly blamed. Then they got a dietician on who was saying it was all about calories. NO NO NO! you stupid woman – when will they learn? But I am quite encouraged that there is to be an anti-sugar campaign. Our man likened it to tobacco because its a)damaging as well as of no nutritional value and b)the big manufacturers have brought all their guns to bear (PR, questionable research, buying doctor’s opinions). It took a while but they did it with tobacco, so I have faith they will do it with sugar eventually.

(Between 12.30 and 13.00 on Radio 4 if anyone wants to find the piece on iplayer. And the link to BBC news is http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-25650352, includes a clip of Dr Malhotra, campaign leader. I may have to worship him as well as Dr Fung <wink>

Oh, and there is a twitter feed (I’m not a twitter lover, but there seems to be no website @actiononsugar)

In the mean time we all have to muddle through. I have to say I find it difficult to eat enough calories (with fasting as well I really don’t need to lose much weight now) from fat when I cut out the carbs. So I am always hungry!

50g of animal protein is a 4oz portion of meat and 4 eggs, so really not a lot in the scheme of things, and its difficult to imagine how much fat you can add to that. A heaped plate of green veggies doesn’t fill me up for long either! I’m topping up with pulses but I know they have carbs, and nuts. But still hungry. (and I hate coconut, they all seem to recommend coconut oil, but it makes me heave!)

Dr Perlmutter, I think, says that in addition to making us fat, insulin suppresses the action of leptin, which is the hormone that makes us feel full. So if your insulin is high (due to resistance or eating lots of sugar/starch in your low fat diet) then you feel disproportionately hungry – eat too much, and get fatter! I’m sure it didn’t matter in the stone age when there was little sugar or starch available, but nowadays its a real own goal!

HI Ruthi, hope it’s all going well with your lovely pooch. xx

I was wondering who had seem the fat v: Sugar Horizon programme and has it made anyone re-think anything?
The conclusion (after an admitted tiny sample) was that neither fat nor sugar were vastly different in their effects but the pesky thing is the delisious combination of them in about a 50/50 combination. That’s what is utterly irresistable for humans – and rats – and makes us pile on the pounds.
(Though maybe the fat eating twin was really eating protein + fat.)

    Here is a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTSTZImInrw

It surprised me. I was expecting it to say Sugar is the baddie. It didn’t. Feel a little bit lost now to be honest. I thought I’d got all this diet stuff licked!

    Xxx. Barbara

Hey, USA- glad you checked in. Toms was also missing you!

this is a great way of explaining insulin in the body

    & fasting

    excerpt

” On the first day of a restrictive diet or fasting, the body turns to its stock of glycogen. After that for survival, the body attacks internal fat (belly or hip fat) for energy. Fat on the hips becomes useful to pregnant women during famine to feed the fetus. During prolonged illnesses and unsupervised fasts, when no other internal fuel is left to use, the body begins breaking down muscle mass to make amino acids, proteins, available to organs and the different systems for survival. Some of these proteins are also converted to glucose to nourish the brain. This stage is dangerous to reach as the body is left with nothing else to feed on. It is seen in people stricken by famine.
In instances when the body is deprived of food for more than three days, the liver turns fat into chemicals called ketones to supply the heart, brain, and muscles with nutrients. At this stage, people start losing the feeling of hunger; shed excess fat; and feel more energetic and acquire more mental clarity and spirituality. That is the purpose of fasting during the holy month of Ramadan; it is to detoxify physically, mentally, and spiritually.
The other benefit that come from fasting is when people lose fat, they also get rid of toxins (chemicals, drugs, food additives, heavy metals, pollutants), which remain hidden in their body fat. With fat loss, toxins get released in the bloodstream for elimination through the kidneys (urine), skin (perspiration), glands, and others. Reasonable fasting is an effective way of cleansing. But with harsh fasts, toxins get dumped in big amounts in the bloodstream and poison the systems. The condition is destructive to health and becomes threatening to life, because sudden toxic dumping shocks the organs (the heart…), systems, and body.”

    hi mulville

how r u? i luv how green n ca gets when it rains it is luscious

    i was reading about standstills

in this article Weight Loss Stalls and Intermittent Fasting

“When viewed over time, you will see that despite the jagged ups and downs, the over-all trend line is down and decreasing–indicating steady weight loss. Sometimes our bodies need to take time to catch up with the loss. We often perceive being “stalled,” because the empty fat cells with be filled with water (because they like to be full) and our bodies like balance…but after a while, your body will get the message and release the water, causing a “whoosh” or a big loss of 2-4 pounds, seemingly overnight.”

ps hi toms waving waving waving @ u 😀

    Hi USA

Down to 132 lbs from 150 lbs. Will probably go onto maintenance for a while if and when I get to 126 lbs (in the UK this is 9 stones, a nice round number!) and focus on going more LCHF for additional health benefits.

We haven’t had much snow in England this year; I can see some on the hills out back. None of the horrendous floods in Cumbria either, we had that in 2007.

Keep warm and get well. Xx

    barbarita

    good 4 u congrats

can’t wait to get 2 maintenance!

    USA

    Thank you

I am very grateful to you for all your posts about nutrition in general – pointing me to the Jason Fung lectures, Perlmutter, William Davis. I have also read Robert Lustig and Gary Taubes. I have changed so much about how I eat since I began fasting. Hope your health improves lots in 2014. xxx

USA- how are you doing? Are you working? Sorry that you’ve been so sick…

I have been having a little break, working on other issues. On New Year’s Eve was down to 139, but bowels in a turmoil-either too much or too little. I’ve been working on that and some other major life events, but at some time in the not too distant future, will start again.

Speedy- I watched the fat vs sugar video that you posted. It makes me crazy. I kind of think that for me, balanced is better. Cut processed foods, like sugary treats and not so many things with white flour, but I am not paleo, or adkins, etc. I like my veg, and fruit sometimes. Even pasta has its place-occasionally. I’ve read that if we don’t have carbs, we lose the ability to process them– the little suckers that pull them in diminish. I know that’s not a very scientific explanation, but have forgotten what the portals are called. Remember, when we talked about LDL going up when losing weight? I found an explanation in a couple of places. Losing weight does have an effect, in the short term.

Ladies and any gents out there- Happy Valentine’s Day– xP

Hi, I am new to this forum and fasting. I’m a 48 yr old woman with 2 grown up children. I had gestational diabetes with my second baby at the age of 28. I have always been a small person but before fasting was slowly gaining weight. My weight last December was 62.5kg which doesn’t sound heavy but it is for my small frame. What was most concerning for a healthy girl ( run 6k regularly and on my feet all day) were and are my blood sugars. Fasting BSL 7.5 and 2 hours post still in the 8s. They were also high if I had anything sweet. So this new way of managing this with fasting has been a lifesaver for me. I have lost 4kg since mid December ( over a rather social and indulgent period ) but best of all my fasting BSLs are in the 5s. I havnt had to miss out on the foods I love and have managed to stave off the inevitable diabetic imposts. My partner has also lost 3 kg since January and he was 101kg. The girls in my workplace are giving it a go and it’s going viral!! My partner is a phd scientist and a sceptic but is excited about the science behind it. He says we have all been on a good paddock for far too long! Thanks Michael and Mimi for your work. It continues to support a struggling majority of us with access to too much good food!
