  • Weigh in for week 3 tomorrow, I’m having to really reassess my diet now and take some Metamucil, I was really stopped up before my last weigh-in and I am again, I went back over my food log and worked out I was only getting 10-12 grams of fibre per day.

Hello all, may I introduce myself. I am 69, married, retired and I live in Melbourne. Started 5-2 on 20th December 2018 and decided to adopt a Mediterranean style eating plan at the same time. Read The Book and fasted the same day. I started at 90kg and despite the festive season, I lost weight right from the start and now weigh about 82kgs. I also found this forum and started reading, from the start. I could be called a super lurker. It took me about 6 weeks but I have now caught up and while it might seem a bit odd I am glad I did as I have every bit of good advice and know all the possible pitfalls and the rewards.

I have thoroughly enjoyed all your stories and the loyalty of the long term posters. I agree with everyone that this is a very supportive environment and the little paths it meanders down make it much more interesting. If it just consisted of 5-2 stuff it would be very one dimensional. I particularly like our honorary Ozzies. They are the extra bit of chilli or the squeeze of lime juice which lifts a good dish to greater heights.

I am a little different to some of you as I am firmly a breakfast girl but have no trouble going through to dinner on a mug of miso soup plus green tea and water. Definitely a ‘naked 5-2’ but I sometimes wonder if that refers to all the weighing that goes on. My scales are about 40 years old and so definitely not digital. No point in weighing often as they only show 500g increments although I still hop on them just to reinforce to myself I really have banished those kilos. My explanation for different results is atmospheric pressure. As good as any thing else.

My original goal was to lose about 10% a year, slow and steady seemed achievable but as you can see from the figures above I am about to reach my first goal, 9kgs very soon. This is crazy. Took at least a year for WW to do the same and I was much younger and I had to calculate points to work out what I was doing. I do use MFP to record all I am eating and yes it is a bit time consuming but I’m retired, it’s OK. At least calories are the real world.

I could babble on but I won’t keep you. I do have two questions which I would like help with. I know that conventional vegie and fruit juice is frowned upon as you throw away all the good stuff but I have the sort of juicer which uses the whole thing. There doesn’t seem to be much info on the value of this type of drink but it certainly helps boost fruit and vegie intake and is very low cal. The other question is that I can’t find out how to scan a barcode on MFP. Is this available on the free app.

Before I go I would like to say a special hello to Cinque. We seem to be near neighbours, I’m in Coburg and when you are happy that I am not an axe murderer I would love to catch up. Do you shop at Basfoods or NSM in Victoria st, Brunswick. Lots of Middle Eastern goodies at great prices.

Looking forward to finally being a contributor and reading more of your stories.

Hi Klondike, I think the whole idea of the “juice is bad thing” is as you said, that you get the calories and sugar from the fruit without the fibre and other good things. I have a smoothie maker that I use for breakfast some times and that uses the whole fruit. I get full on a smoothie of 1 cup of milk and 1 cup of fruit so that can’t be too bad for you. I would say to go for it.

Lindsay, thanks for the stay-ups info. I do love my boots and usually wear them with a longer skirt but it’s good to know of the knee-covering options. Oh no, are those neighbours tenants or did they buy the house? I wrote here of my experiences in Thai hotels wrt to guests of certain origin totally ruining the experience for the others resulting in Thai hotels now having to make commercial decisions about whether they want the lucrative Chinese market or whether to cater solely to European guests. The behaviour at the buffet was nothing short of disgusting and all the mild mannered Thais could do was follow behind with a mop and bucket.

But, since we’re generalising, I find Australians exhibit an amusing behaviour when it comes to use of wide, open beaches, camping spots or vast parkland. Invariably, we’ll mark out our ‘territory’ in the form of a picnic blanket, a considered and respectful distance from anyone else who’s already in situ. Almost without fail, another party will come and plonk their blanket just inches from us, seemingly oblivious to the wide, open space or miles of empty beach available. This happened on Sunday where there was a big lawn for listening to music. A very large young couple overlapped their blanket with ours and proceeded to unload their unhealthy snacks and wine onto ours, moving my book out of her way in the process!

Once we moved our entire shebang from a noisy campground to an unattractive nearby spot on the edge of a huge abandoned parking lot. It wasn’t very nice but it was quiet and we were certain we’d be undisturbed. We watched in disbelief as a family backed their caravan right over some of our gear and proceeded to set up within feet of us. And then, to add insult to injury, tuned into the cricket for the remainder of the weekend. Does anyone else notice this? Are we the only people magnets? Or are you one of the interlopers? LOL! Interested to know what you think of this quaint little custom.

That wasn’t really a rant, just an observation, by the way.

Rosy, it’s great to be referred to as a slim person. That happened to me when referred to a specialist shortly after I’d reached goal weight. She’d never seen me before and remarked something like, “obviously weight isn’t a factor since you’re not overweight”. It was strange having a clinician referring to me as not being overweight and it didn’t feel like she was talking about me.

Anzac, good luck with today’s interview. I’ll be studying, too, this morning but it’s only bridge rules. I’m playing with the big kids this afternoon for the second time. I know we’ll come last but it’s supposed to be good practice. We’re not allowed our cheat sheets so I’ll be revising the rules so I don’t hold up play and annoy anyone at the table.

Cinque, I agree with you, being slim is the reward. So, when it comes to ‘no regrets’ for me, that’s exactly what it means. I’ve learned that I can enjoy many social aspects of life without food and alcohol.

Minka, I’ll be interested to know how your 6:1 maintenance progresses. Friday is an excellent choice. I’m very happy with my Sunday choice as one FD as I believe it helped me to rein in the weekend excesses while I was losing and keeps me honest in maintenance.

P.S. Welcome Klond! I rambled for so long that your post appeared while I was writing. Wow, that’s some marathon reading! You must know more about us than we know about ourselves!

    Good Morning everyone

Good luck with your interview Anzac!!! I know you will wow them šŸ™‚

Thanks you Intesha and Cinque for what you wrote. I am just going to keep doing 5:2 and eat healthily in between and try to not drink so much beer. I know it’s the beer lol šŸ˜‰

I still want to enjoy my life and this journey.

Welcome Klondike. I don’t know the answers to your questions but I would agree with what Neil said above. The main issue for me would be how much sugar I am getting from that juice. I think if you use mainly veggies then it would be ok. Just my opiniom though.

I had a really good FD yesterday. I actually cut my calories down to about 400 instead of the usual 500 or a bit over. I was very hungry after dinner so I thought I would be starving this morning but that is not the case.

Those evil scales are not playing the game as they only dropped 200g overnight. Oh well, whatever.

Rosy, my BMI is 24. I am 166cm tall (I think, hahahaha).

Sorry for the disjointed post. I have been typing in between trying to get some work done.

Have a great day everyone x

    Oh my goodness, thin!!!

You have nailed it. This always happens to us and I have no idea why. We are the type of people who like to enjoy our space away from others and yep, someone always comes along and ruins it. OH has a theory involving living in over crowded cities and being used to being on top of one another. No offence intended here of course!

Ah Thin, as often happens, we are sympatico. How frustrating. Ditto Quacks. Agree with your OH. How about this. Down at our park on the weekend, sitting quietly reading and keeping an eye out for dolphins. Large family group descends, not sure of the background, but maybe Polynesian , from the language, and the kids whip out their phones and start playing music, very loudly. Peace shattered. When the teenage girl looked up, I put my finger to my lips in a shushing motion, and smiled. She quickly spoke to her brother, and they turned the music down. I gave her a thumbs up, she gave me one back. Win win. Later on that day we went for our walk at our usual beach. Two young blokes arrived, set up in front of us, and again, phones on full blast, while they sucked down a beer. We went for our walk, and when we got back they were still staring at their phones. Clearly the beauty of the environment was lost on them! (yes, I think that qualifies as a rant).

The folk next door have bought – and I am sure they’ll settle down. They seem not to know when day is night and vice versa. Here’s another interesting cultural thing. The father told me a few days ago they have two children. One (8) will first have to go to the local school because the private school they want to enrol him in has asked him to sit a language test. The other, 6, has been left in China for a year, ‘so he can practise his Mandarin’. I mentioned to a PhD candidate I have (Aust citizen now but Chinese) how I found it difficult that they’d left a child behind. He wasn’t at all surprised … and said it is because we have such narrow definitions of family, whereas the Chinese family is extended, so the neighbours wouldn’t think of it as taking the child away from his family for a year. You live and learn, don’t you.

Klondike, welcome to the forum, and great you’re having such success. Over Christmas too. You will be delighted with the health benefits, not just weight.

OK back to work and before my next consultation I’m trying to eat a salad without dropping any on my new pale pink linen top (which, by the way, I got online from a favourite shop, and went down one size but should have gone two. whoo hoo)..

Morning all , thanks for asking after hub Cinque . Worrying news the ā€˜stone ā€˜ wasnā€™t a stone but something else, he is booked in for a ct scan tomorrow and is on pain medication to manage pain . Out of my control so will try not to worry .

What I can control is my 2nd btb liquids only fast day.

Welcome Klond. The issue with fruits (whole or juiced) is the high amount of natural sugars they contain. I suggest only having small amounts of fruit as all sugars inhibit weight loss

    5:40pm Tues, Adelaide

I can’t believe I’m in the only Aussie city where it’s cold – 20C and raining for much of the day. I think it’s heading east soon as Sunday here should be 35C.

Klondike, welcome. You are not the first person to lurk for a while before feeling ok about jumping into a conversation with a bunch of strangers. Although I find it hard to remember that I once felt like that as this mob definitely feel like friends these days. I concur with the other comments on pureeing whole fruits and vegetables into a drink. As long as it’s not all high sugar fruits I can’t see the problem. If it’s mostly veg it’s no different to making a soup and pureeing it. In fact it’s probably better because you haven’t destroyed the heat sensitive vitamins.

    Hi to everyone else.
I’m in the middle of cooking dinner so I’d better get back to it.

Hi all. My 2nd fast day of the week is done. I ended up having lunch and dinner today as I was absolutely ravenous by lunchtime so I had 3 eggs. For dinner a small portion of vegie curry from the freezer with a very very small serve of brown rice. Time for a cup of peppermint tea then bedtime for me

Klondike, welcome to the forum. Glad youā€™re fully joining in now. Wrt your question about juicing, After trying a juicer and seeing how much fiber was discarded from fruits and vegetables, I gave it away and started using a high powered blender for smoothies. This maintains all the fiber and still makes a delicious drink. I think they have the advantage of breaking down the cell walls of the ingredients better than chewing and makes the nutrients more available. You can also consume a much greater amount of vegetables in a shorter period of time. The chewing aspect of eating a huge salad can take a lot of time! Hereā€™s my recipe for a green smoothie:

LOTS of mixed greens, mostly fresh spinach because itā€™s mild tasting, but kale and other lettuces too. I add greens twice after breaking some of them down. 1/2 of a banana (this makes the whole thing stay together and not separate) 1/2 a whole lemon (the blender liquifies it, skin, seeds and all) any extra veggies you want, like carrots or fruits like apple. If you donā€™t like drinking bright green drinks, a handful of blueberries will make it purple. Add enough water to bring it to a nice consistency and ice to cool it. I think they taste better really cold so I mostly make them in the warmer months. I only make as much as I can drink in a short period. I think they lose something if they sit in the frig for hours. Theyā€™re so quick to make anyway. The lemonā€™s acidity is important to the flavor for me. And the banana adds the natural sweetness. It isnā€™t an overly sweet drink. I can just feel all the vitamins running through my veins after drinking one of these. šŸ˜ Great FD drink too because theyā€™re super filling with all that liquid and fiber.

Anzac and Quacker, isnā€™t having other people notice how much thinner you are just the best feeling? I think people we see everyday get used to the gradual weight loss and donā€™t notice it as much, just like we donā€™t notice the extent of it on ourselves. It often takes trying on smaller sizes or having our old clothes get baggy to confirm our own losses.

Happy to see that Rami Malek won the BAFTA award on Sunday for leading actor. I watched the ceremony on BBC America here just to see if he would win. He also won the Golden Globe award for best actor a week or two ago. So glad to see that because I think he did such an amazing job in Bohemian Rhapsody. The movie soundtrack is available to listen to for free if you have Amazon Prime. Iā€™ve been listening to it all day. The movie DVD comes out here on Tuesday. Glad to see it is only a couple dollars less than the digital streaming copy.
Thin, it must have been amazing seeing Queen performing with front row seats back it your concertgoing days. I had tears in my eyes during the final scenes of the movie of the Live Aid concert, especially seeing Malek singing (Or lip syncing) ā€œWe Are the Championsā€. Such a moving performance!

I agree with everyone on the value of personal space. Crowds make me crazy after a short period of time. Holiday shopping is a prime example. Concerts or the symphony and that type of thing are fine during the actual event, but navigating the crowds afterwards, especially if people are pushing and shoving, or worse, lollygagging around in the aisles talking and holding things up exhausts my patience. Itā€™s a good thing I donā€™t live in a crowded area. When I see some of those videos of overly crowded subway stations in other countries I canā€™t imagine anyone having to deal with that on a daily basis.

Hope you are all having a great day!

Hi again Thin! A query about the travel scales is that the website looks to be American, so wondering if you bought them in Australia and had them shipped over or did you buy them when you were in the USA? Just curious as postage from states to Oz in some instances can be expensive. My friend, who travels a fair bit more than I do was wondering, since she’s off on more travels soon!

Welcome Klondike, you will love it here !
Re juicing fruit, every diet book I have read ( Keto, South Beach , CSIRO to name the most recent ones), caution against drinking fruit juice. They say it concentrates the sugar and is far too easy to consume a lot as it is full of sugar. If you want to eat fruit, they advise to eat it whole as there is less danger of consuming too much. I never eat fruit on fast days which I do during the working week and party (eat and drink what I want, although I get full very quickly after 5 days of liquid only btb fasting) on the weekends.

The Australian Womenā€™s Weekly must have been listening to me as they have just released a cook/diet book called ā€˜Monday to Friday Diet ā€˜. Well it works for me as we have a very active social life (seizing the day after long, miserable first marriages) on weekends so I ā€˜rob Peter to pay Paul ā€˜ and atone for my dietary sins.

Hub is having a ct scan tomorrow to find out what the ā€˜stonesā€™ that showed upon his X-ray and ultrasound really are. We have had a very happy life together for the last ten years and Im scared it has been all too good to be true !

Thin when do you leave for Thailand?nHope youā€™re back in time for our coffee get together. (I have the day off work to attend the trauma clinic when I, hopefully get released from the prison of my fibreglass cast! I know Iā€™m a drama queen but it is so annoying ! I am so grateful it is not on my leg !!!)

Rosy, I agree about not drinking commercial fruit juices which usually have added sugars and fiber removed. I very rarely drink those, FD or NFD. But when you process fruit in a blender the fiber is still there and itā€™s only the natural fruit sugars. I almost always have a single piece of fruit on FDā€™s anyway and what gets added to a smoothie is limited, usually just half a banana and half of a lemon. A good amount of water and ice is also added so I end up with 2 huge glasses to drink and itā€™s quite thick. Itā€™s so filling and the benefit of all the greens balances things out for me. Omitting the fruit would make for a very bland and grassy tasting drink. I figure the fruit in that smoothie is about 100 calories and the greens depends on how much I can stuff into the blender, still marginal. I can go for many hours without even thinking about food after one of these.

LJ, Iā€™ll trade you your 20C for our 5 right now. Weā€™re supposed to have a high of 10C today. Brrrr!

Weigh in day today, despite my slip up in the weekend I still managed to wave bye-bye to another 0.7 kilograms. My first goal is to lose another 4 kilos so Iā€™m under the weight limit to get a recumbent bike. One guy I know has one and Iā€™m so envious, it looks like so much fun. Thereā€™s a lot of multi day cycle trails In my area that I would like to try.

Good morning everyone, a lovely morning here in Melbourne (and colder than Adelaide šŸ˜‰ ) (but not as cold as California). 8:25am

Welcome Klondikekween (I could have called myself Spiderkween), congratulations on the 8kg loss, on 5:2ing and Mediterranean dieting, on impressive lurking, and on living so close that we can easily have a coffee together.
It was lovely to read your description of this forum.
I don’t know those lovely sounding shops, I might need to check them out.
I’ve got a busy week, I’ll give you my email once I have recovered from it!

Re your questions: no idea re MFP, and same as the others that hooray for blenders that keep all the fibre, and the issue that not having to chew means you get the calories so quickly your brain mightn’t compute, but you can sort that out sensibly.

Congratulations on such a fasty fast day, Quacka.
Hope your lovely top survived your salad, Lindsay.

Rose, sending wishes that all is well with OH’s ct scan today. Something insignificant and easily fixed, fingers crossed.

Gday, well done with your day. I hope you are like those people who find it suddenly gets easy on the third day.

Ooh Neil, a recumbent bike is a lovely reward for a goal reached.

Fascinating reading all the comments about personal space. I am a typical Westerner and am mostly comfortable with lots of space, mitigated by coming from a big family, and working with kids so much.
Do you know the story about the British diplomat and the Middle Eastern diplomat talking at an embassy do? Each time the Middle Eastern man stepped close to talk, the British man would take a step back, and talking in this way they went from one end of the huge room to the other.

Yesterday I made the golden vegetable crust. Thanks LJoyce, it worked so well! It was a bit fiddly making the crust in small pie tins, but mostly because it was my first try. The crust had mostly carrot and parsnip with some zucchini, and I used semolina instead or wholemeal flour. I filled it with a ricotta mix with broccoli, corn and herbs. Absolutely delicious! https://imgur.com/a/7NPU4JH

Well, it’s my Wednesday fast day and I am ready for it! Cheers to you all.

    Good morning everyone

Firstly, Rosy I hope everything is ok with your husband.

Mmmmm Cinque, that pie looked delicious. Has the golden crust recipe been posted here before?

Its FD for me today and I am just not feeling it. It’s not even that I am hungry really, just feeling a bit jaded about the whole thing. I am hoping to just get through today and wake up with a different attitude tomorrow as I know attitude is everything (well for me anyway)

    Morning all
Quacka, FD for me too, and I’m feeling the same. Let’s both get through it, and we’ll see what tomorrow brings. Hopefully good weight loss, which will tweak our motivation. I have a lot going on in my life at the moment and some decisions to be made, so I wax and wane, but I know nothing feels as good as being lighter.

Rosy hope your OH is okay..it’s tough, and made more stressful because you can’t do anything except support.

Neil, good result. Nice to have something to aim for.

Cinque, my linen top made it, but I was just ironing a light linen dress to wear today (it’s going to be in the high 30s again), and found a mark on the back of the sleeve that looks suspiciously like chocolate. I can’t tell you how often I miss my mouth with food. My kids say it’s because I never stop talking…but really, how would I get a chocolate stain on the back of a sleeve?

OK off to work. Good day all. (Thin how did your bridge with the big kids go?)

Just having my coffee and saw your post Quacka. Look after yourself. Soup if you can! You might be a bit dehydrated from all the hot weather.

Goodness knows how far back the golden vegetable crust conversation was. This is the recipe: https://soilborn.org/recipe/golden-vegetable-crust/ My take on it is grated vegetables, sprinkled with salt and drained and squeezed to get as much moisture out as possible, mixed with melted butter and a bit of flour to hold it together, pressed into the pie dish and baked, then filled and baked again. LJoyce described it as kind of a potato latke crust and that is such a good description. It is really tasty and set off the cheesey filling perfectly. I think it works better with a ricotta (savoury cheesecake) or egg (quiche) filling than a pastry crust does.

Oh coffee finished, messy kitchen awaiting.

9:35am, Wens, Adelaide (another mild damp day 22C today)

Cali, sorry not trading a 20 for 5! Although by the weekend I’ll be back to hot summer temps, I’ll be willing to spare a few degrees them.

Cinque, snap. Last night I worked out my meal plan for the next week and decided to make those grated veggie crusts too. I was thinking I might make a basic quiche style filling and add spinach, tomato and feta to half and broccoli, mushrooms and cheddar to the rest. Your little tart looks very good. I don’t have individual pie dishes, I was planning to use my texas muffin pan, although I’m also thinking that my leCruset cast iron skillet may also be an option for a larger tart – I thought the heat from the cast iron may help to crisp the “pastry”.
I also had another idea this morning (which I won’t be trying this time around) of adding chickpea flour to the veg to create a pastry shell that tasted like a pakora. Then fill the tart shells with a dry curry and served with a dollop of yogurt on top.

Lindsay, I too used to get food on myself every time I ate. When I was very heavy my bust created a kind of ledge that caught every crumb that dropped!
I suspect the chocolate on the back of your sleeve was from someone else’s dessert!

Rosy, we are all hoping for good news for your OH.

GDSA, that still sounds like a reasonable FD to me. I also find boiled eggs are a good filler on a hungry FD.

Best wishes for an easy FD to Quacka, Lindsay, Cinque, Rosy, GDSA, Neil and anyone else fasting or doing B2B 800 days.

Time for one more cuppa then I need to do some grocery shopping.

Scrolling through quickly as I woke a little late this morning but these things caught me eye:

Minka, here’s another link: https://foxandmonocle.com/shop/verrette-personal-light-bathroom-scales-white. The business is based in Sydney according to the ‘contact us’ page. That’s where I ordered my travel scales. Apologies if I posted something else.

Neil, good job, the weight is falling off you.

CalifD, I read that Malek was required to sing all the Queen songs for the movie because it’s easy to tell when a singer is lip sync’ing. Apparently, it wasn’t a particularly lovely sound by all accounts! He underwent quite a lot of voice training. Perhaps they’ll release an album following the success of the movie, just kidding. There’s also a karaoke version of the movie showing in cinemas for those inclined. I think it would be fun.

Rosy, of course I’ll be back in time for our coffee date. I hope you didn’t think I’d clear off and not say anything! All the best for your OH’s CT scan. It’s natural to be concerned but my mantra is, “Don’t worry until you are given something to worry about”.

Lindsay, interesting customs. I suppose it’s like boarding school but without the term breaks. I hope they soon learn to keep the noise to suitably appropriate times. Presumably your local council has rules about the operation of power tools within socially acceptable hours so an information pamphlet in the mailbox might be useful if they can read English.

Pretty excited that we didn’t come last at bridge in the big kids section yesterday. My OFMs found it odd that I was so happy about coming 11th out of 12. Betsy will understand. I was so nervous and made loads of really stupid mistakes but my more experienced partner was very gracious about it and asked me to play again.

Off to get some things done and then I’ll read the above properly with my second coffee. Enjoy the cool weather LJ. Approaching this FD from a low base so hoping to get well set-up before my 6:1 next week.

Thanks for the link, Cinque. I am going to try that as I love eating veggies and its always nice to try them in a different form. Also thanks for the encouragement šŸ™‚

Thanks for the encouragement Lindsay! Hope it goes easy for us both. So far so good for me. Those pesky scales had better show some results tomorrow or I am going to swear at them, stomp on them and throw them out the window!!

Hello SH’ers, sunny and 27 in Sydney. The remnants of the dust storm have passed as has my crazy hayfever it caused this morning

So interview yesterday: Train Wreck. That covers the interview, the interviewers and the project. I didn’t get the job (not that I would have taken it). What a waste of time

So just as I was feeling despondent I received a call and it seems an old project that I worked on was being reignited and they want me to go back! Yay! Fingers crossed the negotiations can work

Quacka – can you please stomp on my scales too? After the lovely drop into the 85’s they jumped up again and then only dropped 100g after yesterday’s FD. It seems my body is refusing to give it up!

Yay Thin, you will be playing bridge for Australia soon

I hope your OH is ok Rosy, it must be worrying

Frantic at work, hope the fasters are fasting fastidiously and non-fasters feasting frugally. I’m having a controlled NFD and so far so good.

    Hi Thin,

Thanks for re-sending link and I have to chuckle because neither my friend nor I went far enough into the link to discover that the company is well and truly Dinky Di! I now have checked out farther and not only do I appreciate the travel scales product offering, I also see many other items that are unique and interesting as possible purchases!

That said, just confirming whether or not you trust to pack your travel scales in your checked baggage or do you always consider it carry-on?

On another note that I thought to report to any interested Southern Hemispherites macro details of what I’ve newly been up to on the nutrition front…

I’ve learned so much from doing the MyFitnessPal tracking along with daily weighing. …Not that I track calories every single day and in fact in the past week I just haven’t had the time to devote to that. What is good is that from past tracking, I’m definitely continuing to get a feel for my TDEE in the form of various food selections! Today is one of my days off work though and I’m again enjoying MFP tracking.

What I wanted to write about is something I’ve mentioned before which is that my experience is that I no longer consider all types of calories equal value with regard to whether I gain or lose weight both in the short and long term. I’m quickly learning which types of calories tend to elevate my weight rapidly and which support weight stabilization or even a decline. In line with an earlier post of mine which explained why we can experience rapid gains after a gorge splurge, my own experience for me is that eating grains whether they are whole or refined definitely does mean a rapid increase on the scales! However, since I’m also aware that this rapid gain is due to a temporary accumulation of water in our cells when high carbohydrate foods are consumed in quantities more than our body expends as energy at the time, I’m usually not concerned. I’m more interested in long term trends. Long term though would lead to genuine fat gains were I to simply include 2 x Eskal wafers or the nutritional equivalent on a daily basis, even though the wafers would be within my TDEE tally. Here’s why…

I would like to compare the two following scenarios! I consumed 2 x Eskal Chocolate covered gluten free biscuits with a cup of tea served by a friend. Nutritional facts for the 2 x wafer biscuits:

    230 calories
    2 grams protein
    28 grams carbohydrate
    20 grams sugar
    12.4 grams fat

Because this treat triggered cravings for more sugar and carbohydrates, I observed an undesirable elevation of blood sugar when I later tested. The next day my weight went up by about a half kg (1 lb), mostly because I used up the rest of my TDEE when I arrived home by copiously consuming carbohydrate (whole food – brown rice) rich foods. As I wrote above, I wasn’t too fussed about the gain because I knew it mainly comprised water weight gain, though I found that interesting.

In comparison to my experience handmade LCHF Macadamia cookies from the Paleo bakery. Each cookie contains:

391 calories (nearly double the calories of Eskal wafers)
    4 grams protein
    3 grams carbohydrates
    1 gram sugar
40 grams fat (a whopping number if you ask me, though it definitely satisfies!)

What I’ve observed is that each time I snack on one of the LCHF cookies, which contains higher calories, colossal higher fat though almost no sugar I find my blood sugar does not rise, no cravings result and the scales show no weight increase the next day. Overall, I find I can configure these cookies into my MFP tallies on a daily basis and not gain weight and I’ve even seen decreases over days I’ve been snacking on them. And I’m now experimenting with whether or not I’m able to exceed my TDEE with calories consumed from these cookies to see if I gain weight, or if I’m actually able to exceed the TDEE with calories and maintain, or if I do gain, I’m wondering if this will be a welcome gain and not something to dread or want to lose. In other words, I want to see if I gain muscle instead of fat from increased fat calories!

It is the article in link below that brought this prospect into question for me. As I dipped my toe into LCHF cuisine, I began searching for genuine experiences of others who have taken the plunge. I discovered this SBS Australian Catalyst blog and found fascinating. For those who can’t access the link, the article is called ‘Blog: My six week ketogenic diet experiment’ and was written by SBS Catalyst online reporter Roslyn Lawrence. Not that I expect to go full blown keto, though I’m always interested how I might be able to use my calories to greater benefit and for age reduction rather than age acceleration! Background on the snippet, the author did what the title suggests, she newly embarked on keto diet and this snippet is part of her synopsis of experience…

‘When I added it up I was eating a whopping 2500 ā€“ 3000 calories a day [on keto diet]. That is double the 1500 calories I would usually consume. Yikes! (they did say put butter on everything!). Most people would be satiated on a much lower calorie intake but Iā€™m one of the rare few that isnā€™t.

‘So, what happens when you overeat on a ketogenic diet? Well, as my results will show, not very much. Overall I gained a mere 500gms but when you break it down I lost 3.5 kg of fat because I gained 4kg of muscle (yay!). I was actually shocked that I hadnā€™t piled on the pounds. I definitely feel stronger and I have bulked up especially in my arms and shoulders ā€“ places Iā€™d always found it hard to build muscle previously. Compliments have been pouring in as people comment on how ā€œbuffā€ or ā€œfitā€ Iā€™m looking. A welcome side effect for a change!’

Now, some of you may know I also experienced a similar lowering of fat percentage and muscle mass gain via the taking of 30 grams inulin fiber powder daily. However, I’m now also interested in whether or not moving toward the LCHF will help even further! As I am due for another body scan soon I continue to track results and will keep you posted.

Wow, Minka!! Your post is so informative! I have just quickly read it while I am at work but I intend to read it much more closely when I get home. Thank you so much.

Anzac, sorry to hear about the interview but its great that you know about it before you are locked into a miserable job by contract. A much better offer came along straight away. This was meant to be! Good luck.

I will be waiting to hear what your pesky scales have to say. If they don’t come to the party we can send both our sets of scales off to where the evil scales go! šŸ˜‰

Hi all, thanks for the welcome and advice.

CalifD, I will definitely try that juice but I am lucky enough to have a lime tree so that should make it even tastier. It’s the sort of thing I enjoy.

Rosy, best of luck for OH and his tests. Hope it is not serious and treatment can start soon. My juicer is the sort you throw whole fruit and vegies into so you do get all the nutrients and can have a big variety of Ingerdients.

Neil, how do you stay upright on those bikes, I’m sure I would just end up lying on the road next to it.

Thin, I admire that you are tackling and conquering Bridge. I come from a card playing family but euchre and canasta were the favourites. I’ll stick with my solitaire.

Cinque, I’ve played Spider too. Basfoods is a Mediterranean wholesaler with some legumes etc in kilo bags and really cheap herbs and spices but in 250g containers. There is a halal butcher attached who has good quality meat especially chicken. NSM has big tubs of ingredients and you only buy the quantity you need. Both worth a visit.

I had a yay moment today. Working around the house in my largest jeans and they suddenly slithered to the floor. Guess they will be kept as my ‘before’ pants when I start getting rid of clothes. I’m told Savers are knocking back clothes as everyone is in Maria Condo mode so maybe I should start looking now.

    Cheers KK

FD dinner done and there is my successful FD. I had a big salad for dinner including roasted pumpkin (and lots of salad veggies) and some cheese and one lamb loin chop. 433 calories. Iā€™m actually feeling satisfied in my belly and in my head. I wasnā€™t even very hungry today but it was just a psychological thing that I had to deal with.

Iā€™m not sure if anyone remembers, but last year I had a flat battery one morning when I went to leave for work. It was a FD and I almost gave up just because things werenā€™t going right and so in my head I was like ā€œoh well things are going c**p so I might as well just break my FD and eatā€. I didnā€™t break it, I completed it just fine that day and it was a good learning experience for me. So today, even though I felt ā€˜mehā€™ about it, I still did that FD. I feel good now.
Donā€™t let excuses stop you from doing your FDs. If you feel like you want to break your FD, walk away and give yourself half an hour to reconsider.

Klondike, I reinstalled MFP today as I wanted to help you out with your question regarding the bar code scanning. So, when you go to add food to your diary it comes up with a list to select from. At the top right there is a little symbol that looks like a bar code. You need to have a camera on your phone and you need to allow MFP to access it as the camera is what it uses to read the barcode. A square will come up on your screen. Hold it over the barcode until it reads it. You may need to pull your phone away from the barcode further than you think until it reads (or move it closer).
    I hope this helps šŸ™‚

Hi guys , many thanks for your kind comments of support and concern re hubā€™s ct scan! Will let you know when I know more, waiting is the worst.
@ Quacka, totally agree with you that feelings of hunger pass, walk away for half an hour and reassess. E.g I had a meeting after work and was feeling very empty and hungry, I couldnā€™t do anything to assuage my hunger because of the meeting and now 90 minutes later and still no solid food, the hunger has gone. MM refers to dealing with hunger pangs in one of his books too, theyā€™re a passing thing.

Love your mantra Thin of ā€˜Donā€™t worry until you have been given something to worry about.ā€™
@ Minka, I have heard about body scans, how and why do you get them ? Re Keto, I was on that diet very unsuccessfully for a few years. I did get used to living without bread, rice, pasta, potatoes etc but I have a great love of butter which I used to slather on my mashed cauliflower and par boiled zucchini. I also love meat and was having about double the advised quantity.

@ ANZAC well done really your call back to your old project, you mustā€™ve done a great job ! Howā€™s your uti going ?

Re your body holding onto weight, Iā€™d be interested in what the maintenance posters say as Iā€™ve noticed that sometimes I only lose 200g and other times 1.7kg when I have fasted in exactly the same way. Do any of you have an explanation for this phenomenon?

Oh no, so far behind with posts again. I hate that.

Minka, remember, we’re the ‘carry on only’ family! So my 700g. travel scales form an integral part of my 7kg luggage. Worth their weight in gold. One Perth airport check-in lady said that in all her years of working there, she had never seen anyone take as little on an int’l flight as we three. We like to outdo each other. No problem putting the scales in checked luggage I’m sure. Pleased that you found some other items of interest on that website and even more pleased to learn that I wasn’t losing my mind by sending you the wrong link.

Klond, what’s Spider? Great that the big jeans hit the floor. I haven’t seen that Maria Condo series yet but I think it’s the downsizing/de-cluttering one. I’ve been doing that for years. And still all the drawers and cupboards are full. I’m up to $78k of sales on gumtree now. Where did it all come from? We all hate shopping! We’re having a huge garage sale this weekend with another family; we do this at least twice a year together at both of houses. It’s lots of work getting ready but it was a good FD activity today as I hardly thought of food.

Anzac, playing for Australia, you are too funny! Sorry about the job but good that it was all revealed at the outset. I bet it’s a hassle right now but you will find something great soon.

Quacka, good for you for completing the FD. They’re becoming (or have become) non-negotiable for you now!

Rosy, Minka kindly put me on to a mobile body scanner than comes to various gyms around Perth. I did it last year in Applecross. I’ll see if I can find the info if you’re interested.

I bet someone’s asked me something that I haven’t replied to. I keep scrolling up and down the page and reading the same thing again but didn’t see some things that others have referred to. I don’t like missing out!

Cinque and LJ, hope you’re both well and, Cinque, that you had a good FD today too. Hi again Lindsay, I did answer your question (before I’d read it). I love linen clothing (except ironing it).

    Have a great evening all.

*at both of our houses, sorry.

FD successfully completed after a few days of failure (and 1.5kg increase on the scales, hopefully some being water), so chuffed and ready to post.

Thinatlast, hope your dental work in Thailand goes well, and that you keep the food amounts down – not too much from the street stalls! Great that you didn’t end up at the bottom for your first bridge exploit in the wider (non-learner) bridge environment. It will get even better as you persevere.

Quacka, great for you that folk noticed your weight loss. That concerns me a bit, for me – in the past, once people started noticing and commenting on how much I’d lost, it has always triggered a negative, almost unconscious response where I start eating more again and regain the weight. Really don’t want that to happen this time!

Anzac65, seems that not getting one job may be leading you to a better one – hope it works out for you.

LJoyce, LindsayL, CalifDreamer, Anzac65 & Cinque all commented on their experiences with clothes, getting rid of clothes, clothes not fitting, etc. and also buying new ones from op shops. That may be something I’ll be doing, too, but not yet – still have far too much in the wardrobes.

Intesha, well done on losing most of the “cruise weight” already

Rosy Posy, hope your husband’s scans are okay; it must be very concerning.

Cinque, interesting post re personal space. I had a personal experience with that, with an Italian colleague. When we talked, she would always come closer than I was comfortable with, I’d move back, and she’d come closer again until I was stuck up against a wall. I fortunately analysed what was happening and realised it was a personal space issue, so made myself put up with it, with her. Never felt really comfortable, but don’t think she ever realised.

Have been looking at Dr Jason Fung’s youtube clips on autophagy and think that may explain why I still feel bloated a lot despite the new WOL – I need to have at least one FD a week where I have no protein intake, so probably a fluid fast, and – despite everyone’s posts – probably including a bit of fruit juice for calories. You can buy some now with the fibre included and no added sugar so I’ll try that first before trying blending.

Rosy, hope your OHā€™s scans are ok and whatever is causing the pain can be treated quickly and without trauma. Maybe theyā€™ll need to do an MRI to better see it if itā€™s a tiny little thing.

Minka, your posts are always so interesting with all your analytical insights. You should be a food scientist. Or a nutritionist.

Thin, I read that Rami Malek did indeed sing the songs in the movie and that the sound engineers then amalgamated them with Freddie Mercuryā€™s singing. Interesting article here: https://www.npr.org/2018/11/21/669850052/you-better-own-this-how-rami-malek-came-to-embody-freddie-mercury It makes sense, as you said, since lip syncing is usually so obvious. But the movie soundtrack that they released is apparently all Freddie.

Cinque, that crust and filling looks so good. That tart pan is a nice size for it. LJ, I bet the cast iron skillet would make a good crust as well.

Anzac, sorry about the crappy interview. But remember that job interviews are really more about you interviewing them than the other way around. We say what we think they want to hear, but when it comes right down to it, we really have more on the line in accepting or turning down a job where we spend a great deal of our time every week. My philosophy has always been to convince them to make you an offer. Then decide whether you actually want the job. And low ball offers are rarely written in stone. Saying no to an offer because itā€™s too low often results in a higher one. Never be afraid to throw out a high counter offer. Iā€™ve done that in the past and had it accepted. Having a job you love as opposed to one you hate changes your whole perspective on life.

Morning Morning friends. Lovely day in Sydney, partly cloudy and mid twenties

I had a great night’s sleep, the first in more than two weeks and I feel like a new human! I was so down after being royally rejected by those interviewing me the other day. I have actually never not been offered the job from an interview if you can believe that…I don’t count the time I didn’t get the job (same bank as rejected me the other day eerily) because I didn’t have enough experience of the new fangled methodology they use in projects today. I had a friend working there and the bloke they employed lasted 10 whole weeks because he might have been able to speak the modern speak but had no core BA skills. I went back for another interview and got it! So there

When I called about my old project the girl was so grateful that I was interested she nearly cried. She and I worked alongside each other before and now she is one of the leads. She said she had been trying to find me and asked for my number from another ‘friend’ there who refused to give it to her. She said I wouldn’t be interested – I don’t know why (I suspect she is worried I might take her job or something) and I don’t care because it looks very much like I will be going somewhere I’m really wanted. Yay!

Thanks Rosy and my UTI is all cleared up thankfully. I have everything crossed for your hubby but I’m sure he will be fine. I remembered something you said the other day about water and citrus so I stopped at Woolies on the way to work and bought a lovely fresh lime and am squeezing into my water as we speak. I think it will help get through my FD today

Yay for your great FD Betsylee. I am the queen of going backwards and having blips so I totally understand how easily it happens. We just have to keep getting back on that horse.

Welcome Klondikekween, congratulations on the loss so far and….jeans falling to the ground! WOW!! My pants are all help up with giant kilt-pins at the moment as I have lost around 11 or 12 kilos and I swear every gram of it came off my waist (which is the only place I didn’t need to lose it. Sigh.)

Yay Quacka for overcoming FD temptation. Doesn’t it feel great when you do it? Your dinner sounded delicious.

Thanks for your wise words Cali; it’s so true about needing to enjoy your job when you spend so much time and energy there. I have worked in awful roles and yes, your whole life suffers. Plus I’m the sole income earner so there is pressure to do well and earn as much as possible.

I’m impressed with your packing skills Thin. Despite all my travels I still take too much. The holiday this year will be a challenge as we are mostly in the freezing cold but then have a week in the Seychelles at the end to thaw out. I will probably only be able to fit a sarong and bikini (did I really just type bikini?) and a pair of thongs. Did I mention BIKINI? That’s how positive I am that I will shed the 15 or so more kilos by then.

Minka, your posts are so interesting – thankyou.

Are you lurking Penguin? I need some interesting stories from the cold English winter please!

Have a great day all, I can’t wait to read your posts as they come in

@Thin would be interested to read info on the mobile body scanner thanks Thin.
Like Anzac I am impressed with your packing skills. I am a very organised person but I always take too much. I watched a YouTube about that Japanese decluttering lady and found out about folding clothes into a rectangle then arranging them vertically, I canā€™t believe I have been storing thing horizontally my whole life and didnā€™t consider this.

Iā€™m going to get the mfp app due to suggestions read here. Someone referred to putting lime in iced water on fast days. I also add lemon, coriander , mint and cucumber. I have only a little lime because it can dominate all the other subtly fresh flavours . After I have chopped / sliced all those ingredients, I keep it all day and just top up the iced water. So refreshing ! I am starting my 4 th btb liquids only fast today.

Rosy, you’re up early too! I woke at 4.30am and couldn’t get back to sleep. I was thinking of all the items still in cupboards needing to go in the garage sale!

I think this is what Minka recommended to me: http://inbody.net.au/fitness/ You’ll see a menu item, ‘book a scan’ telling you all the locations. I had mine done exactly a year ago in February. I just wanted confirmation that I wasn’t harbouring excess visceral fat because, other than the ‘cardboard test’, there’s no real way to know.

Anzac, good that you’ve slept well and are feeling positive about the job front. It’s hard to pack lightly when you’re visiting various climes on the same trip. We just find it less restrictive and so easy to use all the infrastructure with less to carry. For example, in Bangkok, we will hop on a local bus at the airport which takes us to the BTS and from there, we can get to the hotel for a fraction of the cost of a taxi and in a fraction of the time. When I collected my neighbour & children from Perth airport, I could barely get all their suitcases in my car. Another friend tells me that she rarely uses half the stuff she takes overseas but takes it anyway. Including several pairs of shoes! Perhaps it’s an indictment of how scruffy we are and how little importance we place on what people think of us.

Klond, I watched the Kondo lady on Netflix last night. I liked her ideas but couldn’t sit through another episode of that voice! I think they should have edited the five minute high pitched greetings every time she enters the house. And the subtitles are annoying to me. When I see these hoarding families, I realise that we actually have very little in the way of possessions. But it still seems excessive to me. I think perhaps I have the opposite extreme problem. All our stuff is neatly housed in cupboards and drawers. Some of these people can’t get even get into their rooms. It must be so depressing to own, and be surrounded by, that much clutter. Apart from anything else, consumerism on that scale really turns me off.

Betsy and Cinque, amused by what you both wrote on personal space. Betsy, thanks for the encouragement on bridge.

    CalifD, thanks for the article.

    Have a great day everyone.

Good morning everyone, Cold enough here to be wearing my warm dressing gown. Not complaining. Melbourne 9:15am

Lindsay, LJoyce gave a good explanation for the chocolate smear, much better than my theory that you DROPPED A CRUMB OF LINDT which melted and then you rested your arm on it. (Dropping a crumb of Lindt being a capital crime.)

LJoyce, cheers for the vegetable crust.

Thin, congratulations getting on that first rung up the ladder of Big Kids Bridge!

Anzac, your job interviews are fascinating. I do hope negotiations go well re your old project starting up again.

Minka, that is fascinating. I think Gday is doing similar. I am interested to see how you both go. Good to hear your experience too, Rosy.
I didn’t pay much credence to that Catalyst show, they were going through their less-than-scientific stage at the time, but I am keen to hear how you find it.

    Klondi, Woohoo! re your jeans!
All the Op Shops are coping now, but you are right, it is the best time of year to find great clothes there. (Avid op shopper speaking)

I love those Middle Eastern stores for their bulk legumes, nuts etc. We are so lucky in this part of Melbourne. My local one is only small and went from being called “Al Wadi” to “Naturally on High” (High St) to cater better for all the young professionals who live around here. But they still sell great produce. I looked up Bas Foods and I have been there! One of my sisters goes there regularly and she took us. It is huge and full of fascinating things.
I’ll check out NSM when we catch up for coffee šŸ™‚

Thin, I play spider solitaire most, I guessed Klondi likes klondike (which is the one we played most growing up).

Rosy, our bodies are so complicated and constantly in motion keeping and losing fluid and food and fat and muscle and bone (and braincells) to a greater and lesser effect. Water being the main, and heaviest, one. Scales are just not very useful if we expect a simple equation. All the professionals recommend using them for long term graphing weight, not short term.
I know they are a wonderful tool for keeping watch on your weight, but only if they are one clue, not if you expect them to make sense!

Quacka, cheers for getting through the ‘meh’ day.

I hope not too many scales are being stomped to death this morning.

Betsy lovely to see your post. I hope all is going really well with your study. Ha, re your similar experience to those diplomats. Good luck, I hope the fluid fast helps with the bloating.

Hi Cali, I hope it is a bit warmer for you today.

Anzac, just read your post. So glad you have had a good sleep. And hooray for the project with the old gang.

Morning Rosy, I hope it is a good day.

I’m off to squeeze some lime and mint into water too! best wishes all.

    Good morning everyone

Ok, I’m back to happy Quacka today šŸ™‚ The scales have finally played the game and have dropped back down into the 66s. It feels like forever since I have been there even though its only been a few weeks. As Merry says, onwards and downwards!

I’m going shopping tomorrow for a new bikini to take on our Winter trip. I have a couple of old ones but they are so worn out I need a new one! I have been wearing them this summer hoping to make it through to next summer but I didn’t forecast booking that trip. Lol, I can’t believe I am excited to be going shopping for swimmers!!!!

Anzac, you will have to go shopping for one soon too! I have all belief in you that you will do this. šŸ™‚

Time to get into work. I have lots going on with all the winter stock pouring in. It’s funny processing boots and winter shoes in late 30 degree heat (although today it is beautifully mild).

Have a lovely day all x

Hi all, I’ve got a little sharing game if anyone is brave enough to join in. I’d like to share it because it makes me face what I’ve been trying to ignore while putting the weight on.

    List your:

    Lightest ever adult weight
    Heaviest ever adult weight
Weight when you started doing the 5:2
    Current weight
    Goal weight

*My lightest weight was 82 kilograms in my teens, but I bulked up when I was playing rugby and my lightest adult weight was 90 kilograms

*My heaviest adult weight, I’m not sure because I didn’t always weigh myself, but the heaviest I have shown on the scales was 136 kilograms

*When I started on this way of life was 131.5 kilograms just over 3 weeks ago

*Last weigh-in put me slap bang on 124 kilograms (7.5 kilos down in 3 weeks)

*My goal weight is to get back to my rugby playing weight of 90 kilograms. This will still put me overweight according to BMI, but I’m built pretty big, back when I was playing rugby at 90 kilograms I was pretty slim.

Lightest ever adult weight 58.5kg (January 2016)
    Heaviest ever adult weight 87kg
Weight when you started doing the 5:2 83kg (August 2014)
    Current weight 59.6kg
    Goal weight 59-60kg

My lightest ever adult weight was while walking up to 15km per day in hilly terrain in Spain and Portugal following reaching goal weight on 5:2. Prior to this, my best weight was in my twenties as an obsessive 5 mile a day runner in California. Back then I weighed 132lbs. A teeny bit more than I do now. I’m 62 and battled my weight for 30 years after developing OA knees at age 27.

I’ve maintained my weight for 42 months. Today marks exactly 4Ā½ years on 5:2 and I estimate that I’ve completed around 450 fast days. I hope this inspires you Neil. Good luck.

Wow, that’s great, good on you! It’s encouraging to see that this WOL helps keep the weight off. I’ve dropped weight numerous times in the past (my best was I got down to under 100 for my 10th wedding anniversary 7 years ago) but it always seems to creep (or sprint) back on again.

Lightest ever adult weight 53.5kg in my early 30ā€™s after a low cal diet. Too thin for me.
    Heaviest ever adult weight 70.7kg
Weight when you started doing the 5:2 70.7kg May 2017
    Current weight 60.2kg
Goal weight 59kg Reached goal Dec 31, 2017

Can I play? Can I play?

Lightest adult weight 58kg (late teens)
    Heaviest adult weight 80kg
    Weight started 5:2 80kg
Current 66.9kg (lucky you didn’t start this yesterday lol)
    Goal 60kg

I just wanted to say well done to all of us for starting and continuing this WOL. All power to the fasters!

    10:45am Thurs, Adelaide

FD for me today, babysitting this afternoon too.

Anzac, I think you found the perfect outcome for your next job.
I can see just what a good night’s sleep can do – you even sound bouncy and energetic today.

Cinque, I love the idea that this grated veggie crust actually adds veggies to a meal rather than just lots of starch and fat.
Have you seen the recipe for cauliflower cheese pie with a grated potato crust in the Moosewood book? I really like this, although I do blanch the cauli first (nice with a mixture of cauli & broccoli too). That crust really is like a potato latke.

Not sure if I want to play this, but here goes.
    Lightest adult weight – 68kg (age 27) – I’d just lost 50kg with WW
Heaviest ever adult weight – 147kg (age 34)
Weight when you started doing 5:2 – 87kg (age 54)
    Current weight – 74kg (age nearly 57)
Goal weight – <76kg + feeling fit and healthy (it’s this combined package that matters more to me, rather than just a number on a scale)

Neil, Like you and many others, I lost and regained the same weight many times over my life. I’d lost over 50kg on a VLCD meal replacement program in the 4 years before starting 5:2 but I was struggling to maintain the loss and was regaining weight. 5:2 not only got that regain off (plus a bit more) but most importantly gave me the right tool to help me maintain a lower weight for once in my life.

    Have a good day everyone.
Time for another cuppa to help me through my FD.

    Me too!!!

Lightest ever adult weight: 72 kilos (wedding day ā€“ I would have been lighter earlier but thatā€™s all I remember)

Heaviest ever adult weight: 97 kilos (14 months ago)
Weight when started 5:2: 91.8 kilos
    Current Weight: 86.7
Goal Weight: 72 kilos (by August this year hopefully)

My average is only a quarter of a kilo per week due to several blips, especially over Christmas but I hope to speed that up now

Thursday 11am – FDs still going well and I’m happy to report that as of this morning I have lost 4.1 kgs in 11 days. Despite 5 FDs last week there was no weight loss at the end of that week but for this week woohoo it’s dropping off.

Another positive note to report is that OH and I have decided to kick the booze altogether. We had cut down to drinking Friday nights only at the pub but have decided this week to stop altogether. We thought there is no point in doing this WOL and then being counter productive by consuming alcohol. I gave up alcohol when I first started 5.2 and only started again when OH came on the scene.

Have taken today off work as we are getting carpet laid in 2 bedrooms tomorrow so we have to empty the rooms and dismantle our bed as we can’t get it out of the room without taking it apart. The flooring for the rest of the house will be laid after the internal renos are complete which is supposed to start on the 25th of this month….fingers crossed. Have a lovely day everyone

Our posts crossed LJ – thankyou for those nice words šŸ™‚ We are both on FD today so good luck (not that you need it).

Neil – you are doing so great! Congratulations

Hi Gday, good for you for giving up alcohol. That is brave and I wish I could do it. We have cut down enormously so that is enough for me at the moment

I’ve made it to 11.22 with just water and two black coffees. Must say my lunch is calling me from the fridge but I’ll hold off until 12.00

Also wanted to join the personal space discussion. I have two phobias. 1. Cockroaches. 2. Personal Space intrusions. I literally find it hard to breathe if a stranger is too close. So one of my first requests when in a job interview is to ask their view on flexible work hours. Thank goodness most banks are now embracing it ā€“ in fact to the point now where my 4.00pm finish used to mean an empty train now it is getting very crowded. GAH! Iā€™ve recently moved from getting on the last carriage to the first carriage as I noticed it was much less crowded so that is a blessing

Anzac, I don’t like it when a cockroach invades my personal space. I still scream when I turn on the light and one’s lurking. I hope you get a job with flexible hours. I feel for you on those crowded trains. The other night, we attended the Festival of Lights in Kings’ Park. It was interactive so you had to walk through part of the park to appreciate the show. On arrival, I was instantly freaked out by the throng of people and we held back thinking it might thin out but it only got worse. So we had to walk amongst a dense crowd of people shuffling slowly forward for an hour. It was a form of torture for me. The light show itself was very good – the sea of mobile phones held above head level was quite a distraction considering it was a light show. Shame people can’t seem to live in the moment.

LJ, I knew your more recent weight loss history but hadn’t known that you’d previously lost 50kg on WW and then regained it and more a few years later. Like many of us, I too have lost significant amounts of weight only to regain it all plus add some for good measure. I’ve heard the WW story over and over. Do they not have a maintenance strategy or would that be against their business interests? I’m still kicking myself that it never occurred to me to eat to sustain my new weight (d’oh) but these large corporations should know better.

Oh, I lost hundreds of kgā€™s on WW, Atkins, Hollywood Diet, Low Cal, low carb, all fruit, all vegetables, you name it. And then I gained it all back plus more. I attribute the failures to having to diet (count calories, carbs or what have you) every day. Thereā€™s a limit to how many days I can put up with that. And holidays, celebrations or meals with friends usually involved going off of it for a day or more. With 5:2 I donā€™t have to ā€œgo offā€ of the program. I just plan my FDā€™s around it. I can easily count calories for 2 days a week. The other 5 days I donā€™t have to worry about it. And Iā€™m naturally more mindful those other 5 days because I know I wonā€™t starve to death if I donā€™t eat something right now.

Thin, I meant to thank you for your Netflix recommendation of ā€œThe Killingā€. Weā€™ll have to give it a try. We still have episodes of ā€œGrace and Frankieā€ to watch too. I see that the American version of ā€œThe Officeā€ has something like 9 seasons on Netflix.
