  • I agree, less than 500 cals on fast day is not going to be sustainable for me. My TDEE is 1200 cals and I cannot live with 300 cals on fast days.

Just my thoughts on this topic:- the TDEE that we set is based on losing x amount of weight per week, therefore it is very low.

5:2 works on principle of eating 500 cals (for women) and normal on non fast days. Normal is up to your maintenance TDEE, which is much more than 1200 cals per day for me.

    Hi Again,
sorry for all my posting. I tend to read a lot when i’m on my fast days – it distracts me. Also i’m a huge procrastinator at work.

Lotus – try some raw honey. A teaspoon to a tablespoon just after dinner will help with the sleepless nights. Just make sure it’s raw and not store bought stuff full of added sugars. Honey is a natural sedative (as well as a natural laxative) – sometimes i have trouble getting to sleep and i do this and it certainly helps. It’s easy on the tummy as well as the natural sugars are easily digestible.

If you’re eating on Fast Days make sure your meals are full of fibre, protein and good fats as this will keep you full for a long period of time. Protein is super important in the 5:2 diet – you need at least 50g on your fast days other wise your body will start breaking down muscle instead of fats.

sorry again for my rants… but i hope they’re helpful!

I am going to stick to 500cal. on FAST DAY..as this is sustainable. WE have all made great progress…why make it difficult.

We are in this for our health and the weight loss is an added bonus.

Hang in there all on FAST DAY….WE CAN DO THIS!!

Good evening all AD’s.. today’s fast day ..went well..!!! I thought to try the going without food the whole day.. and it seems to have worked for me..!! Survived the day on a cup of tea and plenty of water..and its qtr past 5 in Canberra and still not hungry !! I did have a little fruit jelly..I must admit..couldn’t resist..they looked so yumm..25 Calories…!!! Now looking forward for a 2 egg omlette dinner salad..!! ..!! How did everyone else go today??

As I’m a bit technologically challenged I haven’t managed to do the TDEE thing so guess I’m stuck with 500 cals for fast day. Have wondered if we are supposed to eat to the 500 so something to think about for another day. Had appointments this morning so didn’t feel deprived and just had some soup at 1pm Perth time. Feeling quite full and planning eggs as main staple in dinner. Can’t face coffee without milk 🙁 which so far is the only downside and would love a cup so maybe a PepsiMax might help.
Thanks for the welcome CG, so glad this thread exists, such great support! 🙂

YumYum at the top of the page in HOW click on that and you’ll be able to work your TDEE out. Every site you go too for your TDEE is different. Mine ranges from 1350-1850, I use Myfitnesspal to log my food each day and 1200 is the average I eat….without junk or snacks. You don’t have to eat up to your TDEE but it is handy to know. Eat what satisfies you on non fast day’s as normal as possible but remember it is NOT a free for all, so watch the intake, and eat healthy choices. Sure have a wine or a chocolate or whatever…but in moderation…hope this helps…CG
Aly, I love honey, I get mine still in the honeycomb from the local hives and chew for ages the bees wax is very good with chest complaints too. , it’s beautiful…CG

Hi CG, thanks for the info. I’ll try it again. Is your Myfitnesspal an ap on your phone or connected to this site? I need a reliable calorie counter or I’m going to come unstuck. Also what allowance do you give to your morning cappacino and how much milk? My thinking is I need my flat white more than food in the morning and like it half strength – so more milk. If I do this just an apple would suffice for lunch. Cucumber was mentioned in another post and so far I’ve got three different calorie estimates! Always thought it was mainly water anyway. Thanks ….. x

Hi Yumyum, you can download it free on your computer,phone,ipad..where I have mine…it will give you the cals in ALL milk and coffees. I make an espresso each morning with powdered skim milk, but light milk, skinny milk, and all the other strange milks they have these days are on the app, very very handy I try to put everyone onto it when they begin with us…good luck…CG

Forgot to say, I am so past any hunger now, 6.25pm and don’t feel like any food but have my prawn and mango salad to make so once I start to smell that, the tummy will start making noises, just shows how the hunger does pass….CG xx

Ok! Did the TDEE thing and apparently its 1939, is that the amount of calories allocated to a normal day ? Seems an enormous amount, BMI was 26.3 which doesn’t mean much to me right now. Will check out the ap for my phone .. thanks again CG. Have a good night.

    Hi!
Just had a real filling little meal of edamame beans (sp?) boiled with salt – very filling and logged about 50 calories for 1/4 cup. You can find it in sushi shops usually. So my tummy feels full and will stay so because its protien rich. Thought I will share with you all if you are looking for a satisfying filler between meals or a small dinner. The beans are boiled with skin so take time be eaten. That’s my fast day done today 🙂
I will look for raw honey – thanks
Another few hours to go determined fasters! And for most of us – tomorrow is another feed day 🙂

Lotus, any of the beans are great vegetarian meals, I love chick peas but also white beans, red kidney beans (especially in chillie) so many to choose, great in patties or salads but especially soup. All natural protein…have a great hunger free evening, often the hardest time for most, perfect snack and picking time 🙁 …CG xx

Been meaning to look up what Endamame was, came across it in the book on page 137. Be interested to know if it affects you Lotus like Baked Beans!!!! If not, will give it a go.

Aren’t they natural baby soy beans?

Yes CG! They are the baby soy beans. And I narrowly escaped a sushi shop splurge as I had a craving for sushi rolls that would sent FD out the window and bought these instead. Minor victory over my naughty mind – doing a happy little jig in my Train seat now 🙂
And yes Yum Yum, I hope they don’t have the same side effect as baked beans lol. Up till now (so past one hour) I have had no issues 🙂

Hi CG I did download the Myfitness ap and it is REALLY helpful for getting the calories right and allows experimentation once you can calibrate the food type/amount. Invaluable. Recommend others try it. Thanks heaps!

PS… IT’S MOVING! I weighed in at 88.2 this AM. (From 90 a week ago) So encouraging! I am starting to include time on my exercise bike. Like you I can only manage 10 minutes or so. But it all helps. Feeling victorious!

I am finding the burn gets beter if I just grit my teeth and keep going, it may be the warm up period improves things. once I get past the pain plateau it gets better rather than worse. Want to kep going but, drat, run out of breath. Not advising others to follow suit! Will let you know if I end up parayzed by my determination! Cheers! Gypsy.

    Congratulations Gypsybell!!! Well done 🙂

Well done GypsyBell, so jealous….90kg…uuurrrgh….I am really happy for you.

I solved my problem. I had a couple of hours of nanna nap! Now will have a two egg omelette for dinner. 6.25 pm and I have only had 197 calories so far so am good to go!

Great news Gypsy, the app makes life so easy, keep the bike going, I get a bit saddle sore some mornings but an old piece of lambs wool on the seat helps. Congrats on the loss too,
Uptight, I have a nanny nap most days, especially if I’ve had a sleepless night like last night, no harm in it, it’s like rebooting the computer……CG xx

Oh EM Gee….so many posts and so many new members! Welcome everyone…..I will have to get to know you as we go along…..I first joined 5:2 and Aussie Determination way back in September along with CG & GG! So far have lost over 9 kg and never finding them again!

Had an absolute ball with my son and his GF….they left today, and although I am so happy for him, I shed a few tears because I will miss him so much! Have had a week of eating out, cooking his favs and a few drinks each day…..so have a 2kg bloat to get rid of again…..but am pleased that I slotted back into fasting straight away today 🙂

Well done on your losses this week everyone…..and for those starting out, keep up the good work YOU CAN DO IT!

Foxy lovely to have you back, I find I miss family more when I see them, glad you had a lovely time. You’ll be back to your pre visit weight before you know it…take care CG 🙂 ….CG

Just eaten after my first fast of 24hrs

I wasn’t hungry but felt dizzy…now I have a sugar rush from the food.

Most days I feel famished …this is the first time I haven’t looked at the clock and had to be distracted.YEE HA

    Welcome, newbies.

Fast day today – for me and OH! He managed well, I’m sure was about his 600. I don’t weigh or count in detail, just estimate. Looking forward to seeing if he has any movement (on the scales!) tomorrow.

Night, all. Off to bed in NZ.

Ok not sure what is happening but has anyone else had a really bad experience on their first day of fasting? Like vomiting and just feeling soooo bad. Really light headed and headaches as well…not pleasant at all. I expected some general off feelings but the vomiting? Love to hear from anyone that can help.

Wow… You are all doing so well…. Thanks for keeping me inspired. Today was tough and I’m quite hungry now but I’ve kept my fluids up and I’ve felt fine all day. Liblady I hope your ill feeling passes quickly, I haven’t experienced nausea myself.

Liblady, that’ awful, no idea why you would be vomiting. As long as you were keeping up with your fluids, especially with vomiting.Unless you’re in for something! If you feel hungry have something light, a dry biscuit or something, see if it stays down, but keep the water going. If your no better in the morning, I think you should ring your doctor. Sorry to hear you are feeling that way..look after yourself….CG xx

Hi Liblady…..how awful for you! I have felt nauseous before when fasting, but it’s usually happened when I’ve had alcohol the night/day before my fast….not always but sometimes. You may not even drink alcohol, but perhaps there might be something you are eating day before that may have upset your tum? Or perhaps as CG says, you may just be unwell. Hope it eases up, take care

Thanks CG…..it’s great to be back and get inspiration from so many comments and new folks on here 😀

HI,LIBLADY…..DO you have any ginger, peppermint tea or chewing gum with you? Please try that.

I have never heard of symptoms as bad as this on 5:2.nausea ..yes BUT not this vomiting
Sorry to ask….. a do you think you could be pregnant?
    ……..GO GAL

Hi all, just checking in before I join the madness that is the Calder Fwy down to Melbourne.

Liblady, vomiting from fasting doesn’t sound right – hope you are feeling better after a night’s sleep. As the girls said, maybe a call to your doctor would be a good idea. At any rate, it is probably a good idea that your GP is aware you are doing the fast diet.

As for me, 88 kg this morning so I have burned off the Chrissy/NY indulgences. Now to finally get under 88!

Good morning team, golly Andrew you were up early, sad case of have to if using the Calder to Melb, luck with that…safe trip.
Liblady, hope you feel better this morning, it is usually recommended people ask their doctors before starting any change in eating habits/diets., Even Michael says, the 5:2 doesn’t suit everyone, but on the brighter side, let’s just hope it was a 24 hr bug or as Foxy said, something you had the day before. Wondering if you had any new medication, or didn’t take with food as you should, or trying appitite suppressants? They can upset a lot of people. Anyway, your an adult, a mother, you know how to handle things, good luck, let us know how you go.
I hope all other members had ill effects with their fasts yesterday and feel rareing to go. Today is more relaxed with choices and amounts but still all in the healthy range. Sure, have a wine or a chocky bikkie, if your still new, it pays to keep track of calouries for a few weeks to know your TDEE and the amount you are eating up to. It does become habit, you don’t need to count daily once you get into the swing of things. Have a great day team, don’t sweat the small stuff, life is for living, ENJOY… 😆 …CG xxxx

Liblady I am not sure about the vomiting. I would say it may be a bug. Some people feel a little off but that’s it. I would wait a few days and try again.

I did it stood on scales this morning not only has my 500 grams gone but I lost 1.3 kg since Friday.

OH WOW BALI, HOW WONDERFUL, CONGRATULATIONS, THAT’S AUSSIE DETERMINATION WORKING FOR YOU……CG XXX

Morning Team….!Welcome to all our new team . sorry not to name you all, I surely would leave out someone.

Could to have you back Foxy! so glad you had an enjoyable time with your son & his GF.

LIBLADY- hope your feeling better this morning…. As Andrew & CG have advised if this vomiting continues off to the GP. It is wise to check with a DR when commencing any change in life style. With humid weather, rain it may only be a gastro bug. There has been an outbreak of gastro recently in most states..Take care.

Bali- well done ……go go girl !

    Have a pleasant day team…. its a feast of a day…….GO GAL

    Good Morning ADs
Sorry to hear Liblady that you are not feeling well. As everyone said nausea is something that I still feel on fast days, however vomiting sounds a bit more. Please take care and try to consult a doctor. Apart from everything else, your health and well being is most important. All the best!!

Wooo hooo Andrew, I am sure you will come out of that 88 bracket soon as the trend is downwards anyway.

Bali, what an amazing loss. Your are so determined and focus, really happy for you. I am doing another happy dance for you 🙂

So happy to see full attendance here today. Feels like a meet and greet on Aussie Determination Thread today.

Yes, feast day for me and hubby as well. I stepped on scales this morning and a gain of 500 grams (73.5 kgs) but not stressing as it is that TOM again, so keeping up the positive energy. I fasted yesterday and finished at 400 cals, so hopefully no damage and its just a normal (usual) bloat and water retention.

Good morning all! Fast day for me gain ( back-to-back this week, lets see if it works. I had a really good fast day yesterday finishing at 430 cals, and thanks for the honey hint – I had a glass of low-fat milk with a teaspoon of honey and slept like a baby 🙂
I have not weighed myself, maybe tomorrow after both fast days.
Liblady, hope you are feeling better now. I had nausea too the first couple of fasts, but very less to none nowdays. I guess the body gets used to it.
Congrats on all for their weight/inch losses!!

Good morning AUSSIE DETERMINATORS. Hope you’re feeling better this morning Liblady. So glad I don’t have to tackle big city traffic Andrew, all the best. Sounds like everyone had a reasonable fast day yesterday. I am fasting today. Nothing to eat until lunch (brunch). Then I’m going to try that mushroom stroganoff in the ebook some of us bought. I’m off to get my “vintage blondes” (as my hairdresser calls them) seen to so should be an easy fast today (she says with positivity in mind). All the best everyone.

    Good Morning everyone,
I had a good fast day yesterday. I think I ended up just over 500cal as there was a small amount of pretzels left on the table at work, maybe 20grm, so I ate them with dinner. I enjoyed them and did not feel guilty. I stepped on the scales this morning and was under 90…YAY, 89.8kg. I know it will not last as today I am eating and it is at my weekly weigh in after eating normally for a few days that i will be convinced the 90’s have gone….(if that makes sense).
Liblady, I do hope you are feeling better today.
Bali, that is incredible, well done you!!! 1.3kg in 3 days. Very inspirational.
I am of for a morning workout. I feel very liberated as I am a runner and have had chronic heel pain for about a year which has stopped me from being able to run. Through treatment and patience, (and a lot of strength training) it is finally starting to get better so I am able to do some interval running, which is perfect for this program…. 🙂

Good Morning everyone, I stumbled across this forum last week when I was doing some research on 5:2 and I have been reading all your posts since and what inspiration you all are. I am originally from Ireland but have been living in Sydney for the past 7 years.

Over the past 3 years I have gained a massive 20kg and my weight now stands at 100 kilos to which I am horrified with myself. I met my fiancee, fell in love and into the trap of takeaways. The lowest point for me was early in 2014 I weighed 108kg but lost 12kg with Paleo but that is just too restrictive and after being on a cruise for 2 weeks at Christmas I have put a few kilos on. I am getting married on New Years eve in Ireland, the dress is bought and now I am on operation wedding dress. After seeing my aunts bestfriend lose a whopping 45kg on the 5:2 diet in Ireland I have decided to give it ago with my 1st fast day today. I have also signed up to Curves as their gym is just 5 mins from my office, so no more excuses.

I hope you all have a lovely day and I look forward to joining you on your journey:)

Good morning everyone! Had a great fast yesterday and am happy to say that 1.3 kg of my bloat has gone overnight, can’t get better than that…..am going to do a 4:3 this week, to get rid of the rest and hopefully some fat by end of week.

Welcome mgreally123! Congratulations on your decision to give 5:2 a go….I think that you will find it a great way of eating and way of life as it is becoming for most of us here…..you have a great goal to work towards and making positive choices such as joining the gym is the way to go…..you will get lots of support on this thread and checking in regularly really helps…..good luck with your first fast day, drink plenty of water as this is what I believe to be the key to success!

Well done Catherine on getting under 90kg! Those 90s will be a distant memory soon!

Have a great day everyone! 😀

    Welcome mgreally123
Fantastic effort on joining the gym at the same time and hoping that you will get the required support here. Upcoming wedding is a very good motivation and I really hope that you are able to achieve your targets with 5:2 journey.
If you can, try to check in everyday and feel free to ask any questions. One of the group members will definitely reply to your queries.

    Welcome mgreally123,
I can definitely confirm that drinking plenty (by that I mean lots) of water, I am able to make it through fast days much more comfortably. I do feel hungry on fast days but I keep swigging water and the grumbles go away. Sometimes I intersperse the day with black Rooibus tea or coffee.
My experience has been that the 5-2 didn’t appear to be making any difference for the first six weeks but now I am seeing some changes.
I take my waist and hip measurements most days and occasionally weigh myself. The numbers didn’t budge for weeks but now my waist is consistently 2cm less than it was at the start so I’m watching with anticipation to see if it will continue that way.

Hi from Tassie. I’d like to thank all those who advised me about the calorie count in Crayfish. Especailly flange42 who told me about the app. I’ve downloaded it. My very first Fast Diet day went of better than I had expected. I felt very energetic this morning and went for a lovely long walk.
    Hang in there Aussies.
    Maggie G

Hi dogsabie, I’m a bit confused here. I don’t know Crayfish, we all use myfitnesspal, but you can use whatever suits you, and you are more than welcome to join us at AUSSIE DETERMINATION. Lovely to see so many new members, we are all here to support you, answer questions and share hints we found worked for us over time.
    Have a great day…CG xx

    Hello All DA!

After all this talk about My Fitness Pal (i’ve used it in the past) i’ve decided to download it and use it again. So much easier than what i was doing before. I just calculated my lunch of Raw vegetables (Cabbage, Zuccini, carrot and capsicum), tuna, cannellini beans and Apple Cider Vinegar (which I couldn’t even finish) was a total of 238 Cal.

I’m so glad the honey worked for you Lotus! It has soooo many health benefits and many people forget about them! CG I also use the honeycomb!

I’ve been reading up a lot on old remedies of Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey – and also how vital it is to have a healthy gut! Along with 5:2 i’m going to be focusing on eating foods that promote good bacteria in my gut 🙂 Anyone else heard of or is using the ‘Skinny Gut Diet’?

Aly, MFP takes all the guess work out…often we get the surprise how low a meal is, and others…shock- gasp!!! So well worth using, but 5:2 allows you to eat ANYTHING but calculate your cals so you keep your daily intake under your TDEE, include alcohol, treats of any sort, whatever you ingest, it really helps keep track….CG xx

Hey CG, I think Dogsabie meant that someone here helped her to find out calories in crayfish. 🙂
But I also think that she she is confusing this thread with other thread as she was posting in Southern Hemesphirites thread before (spelling???)

Hi FB, yes I got that feeling too, I looked up the other threads and realised she’d made a mistake, but we have a few that “shop at each store”, thanks mate for the help, hows hubby going with 5:2 , still happy xx CG

    Ha ha ha True CG
Hubby is doing great. His motivation is really high due to the big loss in first week. He is aware that most of it is water weight, however I think scales give us the reassurance that whatever we are doing is working.
I am positive that he will stick to it as long as I keep cooking for him :-)(both fast days and non fast days)
He is also getting obsessed with MFP and notes down every damn thing even on non fast days too. 🙂 🙂 🙂
