Happy Sunday Morning 🙂 Thanks for the welcome comments Barata and Lotus. My goal is to lose 10kg in 20 weeks, I think that’s achieveable. I live in a tiny town but I’ve been getting off the bus at the farthest stop from my house so that I have at least a 10 minute walk home in the afternoon – it’s a start 🙂 I also have one of those AeroPilates machines that I bought in a moment of madness a few years ago that I’m psyching myself up to dust off and put to good use.
I’ve got some of those fruit teas – I’m going to try your idea Lotus and have it chilled – sounds nice.
Oh, and one other thing I’ve done to reduce my alcohol intake by at least half, is to have a glass of wine on alternate nights instead of every night. On the nights I don’t have wine I drink a large glass of soda water with ice, a slice of lemon or lime and a dash of bitters.
Welcome Jindabella! Get ready to have adjustments made on your dress.!I have my sons wedding also this year and I am quite excited to be revealing the new me!
Once a week I measure and weigh myself and put on the tracker provided here (top of the page )for Aussie DETERMINATION weigh in on Friday.
I sometimes put ST -Starting weight…GW – Goal weight ..CW – current weight. Read over the other posts especially Fridays. If you need any help we are ALL here for you. This is a way of life that is DOABLE!
Enjoy your FAST day Rixies….go easy on yourself, we are doing 5:2 because it allows us to LIVE our life…and have a happy anniversary tomorrow!…

Good morning DETERMINATORS. I was in Brissie all day yesterday so huge number of emails when I logged in this morning. Welcome to all the newbies, Gypsybell, Scrappy Pappy, Jindabella, Midlife crisis, Megxxx and Rixies (if I missed anyone, sorry, you’re most welcome too). You’ll find a group of people who are very supportive, encouraging and inspiring here.
CG, it must be so great nearing the 70’s, well done you. Bali .5 to go to get rid of that holiday blip – .5 pffft, gone very soon.
Fasting again today (I’m doing alternate days) so into the Summer Fruit iced tea atm. A salad for lunch and my leftover fast day bolognaise for dinner with konjac noodles.
All the best everyone.
Hi Country Girl and fellow Kiwis and Aussies 🙂
I have just joined and now day 3. I am doing the 4:3 for a few weeks to kick start. So today is my 2nd fast day. I had a large green salad with carrots and an egg for breakfast/lunch and wondering what I should have for dinner…thinking of a large bowl of vege soup mainly with cauliflower.
Surprisingly on my non fast day I found it hard to eat to 2000 calories and only managed around 1600.
Oh and I have stopped alcohol all together. I was drinking about 3/4 glasses every day – with all the BBQ weather. Putting away the chardy was easier than I thought.
Hi girlfromdownunder, I’m new too – it’s quite a challenge to do 4:3 but I’m giving it a go this week as well. Tomorrow will be my 3rd fast this week – I find it easier to fast at work because I’m busy and my roster is 8 days on, 6 days off (I’m a minesite administrator) So my fast days are Wednesday, Friday and Monday during my working week. I’ll stick to two days during my R&R though 🙂
Good luck – the advice from the ladies here is invaluable 🙂
Yesterday I finished a fast from 2pm the day before and I understand what Flemishcurves meant by the temptation to go overboard. Because the fast ends in the middle of the day I felt a strong urge to fill up straight away. I think this method might take more discipline than beginning the fast after the evening meal and ending it the next evening or even the next morning. That way the fast is actually about 36 hours rather than 24 and includes two overnighters.
Hello all, just lost a post I was writing so will try again 🙂 Having just finished reading THE BOOK I am going to start 2 fast days tomorrow – Monday and Thursday. Have been reading previous posts and getting some good ideas from everyone. At 67 and counting, I need to drop a few kilos put on by my love of savoury, salty food which does not love me back! I’ve also been skipping breakfast (no eating after 8pm – 12pm) and haven’t found it too hard so thought an extension is the way to go. Look forward to listening and talking to you.
CG, as long as “you’re getting there” is louder than “you’re still fat”, then go for it!! Keep pedaling. Keep up the determination, it’s an inspiration to us all.
Great news, OH is joining me, starting tomorrow. He has lots to lose, has a fixed mindset and I was thinking he would not be able to move from having to restrict what he eats on two days to thinking that he would be able to eat normally on five. But he has made that decision, so watch this space! I’m sooooo pleased, he’s been overweight for over thirty years, his father and three older brothers had heart problems but he’s advised no risk of diabetes. Well, there are more things than diabetes (stroke, heart, being attractive to one’s partner, sleep aopnea, libido!!)
Wow, so many posts to read and catch up on. I had a 3:4 week last week because of my effort at dinner on Thursday night. It went ok but I did find the 3rd day was more of a struggle than the first 2.
I am so looking forward to getting on the scales tomorrow morning. I am, however, thinking that I might have to change my weigh in day to Wednesday. That would be easier for me and not just after the weekend.
I would love to respond to posts but don’t see them in time and when I read them it is 2 pages away…. if that makes any sense. But I love reading things and it seems there is a great influx of new people. I am new myself.
Hope everyone has an awesome Sunday evening, what is left of it……bring on the next week.
Good morning everyone.
Happy Monday’s fasters
Too that last 500 grams be gone this week
Back to work today, boo love being on holidays in January. Oh well the wait begins fro next January.
Hope everyone has a lovely day. Will check I. On posts when I get home this afternoon.
had my boiled egg, zucchini and leek soup lunch Vietnamese chicken salad for dinner(this a new one see if family like)
Good morning Determined Aussies!
Wishing you all much weight loss and great health, and sending “stay strong” vibes your way….
Well into my Monday fast day as I started 1 PM yesterday. I am trying back-to-back this week, as we have meal/family commitments for the rest of week. Lets see how it goes. Also, according to my endocronologist, better for insulin regulation(I am insulin resistant), as it takes about 24 hours for the body to start Ketosis (burning fat to make energy). It sounded tougher to do in theory, but feels actually easier in practise 🙂
So I had my lunch yesterday, will not have anything to eat or drink apart from black coffee/ tea/water until 1:00 pm today, fingers crossed, and then again tomorrow 1 pm. I have brought celery sticks for munching if the pangs get too hard. Its also supposed to reduce appetite in the longer run (according to him), which apparently, is the key to long-term weight loss maintanance. I am thinking of it as a rest and repair time for my poor pancreas, rather than “fast / deprivation”…
If it works well, I might keep this as a pattern.
Will keep you all posted 🙂
Thanks for this wonderful forum and support from all you determined Aussies, it makes the journey so much better.
Good Morning Aussie Determinators
And a big big welcome to all newbies. Wow, so much happened here in one day. CG, this is the power of support that you provide. I am sure you are a proud mother Hen 🙂 🙂 😉
Well, fast day for me and hubby and many of us here today.
Barata, hubby joined me just one week ago and since he joined, this journey has been so much fun. When I was doing it alone, I used to have same soup for dinner as I just could not be bothered. Also my non fast day meals were boring. So, I am sure you will enjoy the 5:2ing company.
But oh Boy, this last week has been amazing. I have experimented with so much (no oil cooking) this week gone. Example: Yesterday was a non fast day and I made falafel wraps. I did not fry the falafel, but baked them. added some mint and coriander chutney (very low cal) for flavor hit instead of hummus. One wholemeal falafel wrap came at an expense of approx 280 cals. Not bad for a non fast day.
And yes, hubby did 5:2 last week and lost a whooping 3.2 kilos as per Sunday’s weigh in. So, all the food that he has been eating is still helping as its all low cal and healthy.
I leave for my holidays on 28 Feb and target is to get to 68.5kgs (current weight – 73 kgs) so 4.5 kilos to loose in 7 weeks. (Ah, the joys of being in 60’s, I wish!!!)
Can I do it, with Aussie Determination I can try and will give it my best shot. Thanks Aussie Determination for injecting the “confidence” hormone into me. Love all……
Wow, hello everyone, I’m fasting today and this is the first one I have actually LOOKED FORWARD to. A shift in the scales after last week’s second day helped with this enormously. So I have even walked to work, not far but there is a hill. Low cal soups, slendier noodles and a couple of boiled eggs in case I need a protein hit to get be back over the hill on the way home.
Great to hear of everyone’s progress.
maltesers (though I don’t eat the lot in one go now)
Morning Determinators!……. Our thread is so busy ! Welcome to all new members & there is quite a few of you now. The secret is out….. Just how encouraging & supportive AUSSIE DETERMINATION IS. We are showing incredible results in 4mths for many of us.
Have been enjoying TOFU lately in stir fry & soups …. finding it satisfying.
Have a happy FAST DAY those who are fasting……..GO GAL
Good Morning everyone, I have woken up hungry this morning but I am not afraid of the feeling. It is a fast day and I just need to get on with business and keep busy.
I have lost 1.1kg this week. down to 90.6. Roll on under 90!!!!!
Fatbuster, That is such a great number for you, well done and your gaol seems so achievable.
Maltesers, interesting name…..makes me think of chocolate…. :-).
I have a question, I exercise a lot and read a post stating that although exercise is great for you and necessary for your long term health it can negate a bit of what 5:2 is doing. The way I read it is that you just need to be more patient, but it is worth it in the long run. Here is the post:
http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/exercise-is-dangerous-for-your-diet/
Any thoughts?? (I am not going to stop exercising. I love it too much!!!
Thanks Country Girl. It is funny though because it was in doing what you have suggested that I came across this post. :-).
It is Ok, I just wanted to see if anyone else had any experiences of doing 5:2 for a long time and exercising.
I feel I am on the right track and following the right thread for my state of mind. It is motivation to keep going when I want to give up that I need.
The rest is just curiosity…..Hope that makes sense…..
Hi Catherine00, I try to combine fasting with exercise as much as possible. I guess lots of exercise increases muscle mass and muscle is denser than fat so is heavier and thus might create a false impression on the scales.
I like to exercise on fast days. My rationale is that I have less glucose in my blood on fast days so when exercising the energy has to come from another source – possibly deposits in the liver or even fat.
I am fasting today so will eat around 560 cals. I will also go for my usual 4 km fast walk which burns around 300 cals so a good nett result. In the book, Michael recommends if you exercise on a fast day, do not eat extra food to make up for the calories burnt.
Well CG, I really hope that this is the case. Wanna give mum n sis a surprise / shock one of either….LOL
I will say this over and over again, that I was like a shipwreck when I started this journey and did not have any self confidence at all. Everyone here in this group (special mention to GG- who adopted me) helped me get my confidence back and gave me “I CAN DO IT” attitude. This has been the most important part of journey for me. Weight loss has been an added bonus 😉
Thanks Catherine, I really hope that I can achieve the goal, so that I will have room to indulge now and then while on holidays.
GG, I love tofu too. Being a vegetarian, I don’t have many choices in proteins. I don’t like eggs a lot, so Tofu is a life saver for me.
Well done maltesers (yummmmm), a shift in scales is truly a great motivation. Keep yahooing!!!
Gonna give this another go as my last message came up with only the first two words…not sure why. I am on my very first day of fasting and on my very first day of joining a forum. As someone who always thought their throat was cut if I had to go two hours without food, I am feeling a wee bit anxious but after reading the book, doing the research I think this WILL be the way for me to lose my weight. I’m loving reading all the positive stories on this forum and hope that soon I will be adding my own.
I am just sitting down to my first meal today and it is EGGS!!!. Thanks CG. I too love eggs, but I am having 2 with some salad and a hommous dressing. Adds up to 250c.
Liteneasy meal tonight at work and if I need a snack I have cucumbers. I have heard that they are a negative calorie food. They have about 7 calories in one leb cucumber and take more energy to digest than that… I love cucumber!!!!
Hi ALL
FAST DAY today and its 11.00am in Perth….still not hungry! Usually after working in the garden I am famished!
I am not sure if its because of what I ate last night.I ate at the normal time for me 5pm. But the meal was very filling!
I feel really silly though as I have just realized something about he amount of calories that I have been eating on a FAST day. I have been on 5:2 since September 2014 and the penny has finally dropped! On FAST DAYS I eat up to 500calories…when I should of been having 1/4 of my TDEE…which is 350Calories…..DAH….That explains why the weight loss is not huge even with exercise. I usually keep active either gardening, walking everyday! But just incase some of the new people to 5:2 start panicking….DONT….Even up to 500 calories I had a loss of 500g a week……THIS IS DOABLE
Good point vegiemumma, I think I have to rethink my fast day calories that will then stop at a sad 350 calories. Already used that up, so no more food today until lunch time tomorrow. Woot!
I am with you on the hunger pangs CG, I had a big carrot and sprout salad and about 100 gms of grilled chicken (boneless) after a 24 hour fast about two hours back, and I am already peckish! Had a cofee just now to tell my body to shut up.
Anyway, meeting to go to now, so hopefully this too shall pass…
Hi All,
I’m glad i stumbled across this group! The pounds and stones were really getting to me!
So I started on Thursday last week and i’m attempting the alternate day fasting – i’d like to kick start this weight loss as my clothes have becoming uncomfortably tight!
I’m young and have been keen into sports a few years back but then i injured myself and then kept reinjuring myself which lead to weight gain and unhappiness which led to comfort eating – oh what a vicious cycle it is. My goal this year is to get back on my bike and ride to work – but alas, Monday (last week) saw me burn my hands with boiling water. So I start this change in lifestyle with limited exercise but with high high hopes.
I found my first fast day exceptionally hard but noticed a change in my eating habits the next day. I looked forward to my 2nd fast day which fell on the weekend so will power played a big part in that. And now… onto my 3rd. I find tea, water and coffee really help. I’ve just had an apple – pectin in the skin will help keep you full with the fibre and will eat my main meal for dinner.
I didn’t weigh myself to start with… not wanting to get on the scales. I just want to measure by getting into those jeans again.
GOOD LUCK! THIS IS EXCITING!
Hi again,
I’ve found this website really helps:
http://www.shape.com/healthy-eating/diet-tips/50-tasty-foods-under-50-calories/slide/all
I’ll jump in Countrygal! I am having trouble fasting today because it is grey and gloomy, I’m a bit trapped inside and I am bit bored. Took the dog for a walk which was quickly cut short due to heavy sub tropical rain.
I will do it but I keep thinking about food even though I don’t feel like eating any of the available options. I just get badly affected by grey days, become a bit down and unmotivated.Reading all day, which I enjoy but not exactly active! Ho Hum. Nice to see some more enthusiastic posters on here today!
Thanks so much Aly (the suggestions look really doable, and I have some celery sticks in the fridge that I can munch on!), and Countrygal for your encouragement. Good to know we don’t have to stick 1/4 of TDEE maximum for fast day, as that is a depressing 350 cals in my case. Feeling better about it now 🙂
Will have a glass of milk at night(to counteract the not so fun sleepless night).
