  • Good Morning all!

July 1st!! Where is the summer going?? I’m up and ready for boot camp a bit later. I’m so stiff & sore from Monday’s workout….this should be interesting. I see lots of moaning and groaning in my future. πŸ˜‰

Scale was up a few tenths of a pound this morning, but no worries. I know it’s not fat gain. I stretched my eating window to closer to 6 hours yesterday. That seems to work better for me. If I wait until 2 to eat anything, then I don’t want to have dinner. If it was just me, it wouldn’t be a problem, but I have to make dinner for the husband and he likes me to eat with him. We don’t always eat the same thing, but we do eat together.

A few extra things to do at work today since it’s the first of the month, but should be an easy day. We’re off Friday, so YAY for a short week!

    Have a great day!

Hi All I am posting on this rather gloomy looking Canada Day, hope the weather clears up for music later and fireworks tonight.

Sorry, with the short-term memory of a flea, I can’t remember who posted that they are procrastinating about going out for their run. I am in the same boat, as things are looking like the weather could get nasty soon. Ironically, just over a month ago I gave away my really great Running Room outer shell/rain cover up thinking “I will never use this again”. Oh well, I think it was actually the gilly (luck, magic) that turned the tide for me for starting to run again. As far as the weather goes today, many will testify that I am most certainly not made of sugar :-). I won’t melt.

Kate Eve, what a fantastic loss and how wonderful to be able to get back to riding. You must be full to bursting with pride at your good work so far.

Salma, yay for your loss. Yes you may be a turtle when it comes to the weight coming off but, by the sound of how your clothes are starting to fit, your are definitely winning the race. I am in total agreement with Milena about this being the best way possible to avoid the jiggly skin. I have been working on this WOL since the end of January and really lost almost all of my 22 lbs in the first 3 months – too fast and I have the jiggly skin to prove it.

For the past 3 months all I have really achieved in this WOL was struggle: fall off the wagon, climb back on, fall off again and on and on it goes. I think declaring that I was on maintenance was really just a form of giving up and deciding that I would never reach my true goal. Well, just as what happened when I originally started 5:2, I am getting tired of myself making excuses, and I mainly have you ladies to thank. I am not going to fiddle around with extreme steps but I will join all of you who are starting out on the FBD. I am going to be realistic though and start in 2 weeks – no alcohol, live music and holidays just don’t mix.

    Enjoy the day all.

    Hi Beldyboop

I too think I must be suffering from water retention it was 31 degrees her yesterday at 4.30 and 25 driving home at 11.15pm.

I do suffer from water retention and for the past week haven’t had a loss. Although I also haven’t gained. I did to 4:3 last week and I shall do the same this week. I am drinking buckets of water and only about 2 cups of tea a day.

So maybe we shall both get a good loss when the weather cools, looking at the forecast it seems as if it won’t be for a while. Indoors here it is about 26 and that is with all of the windows open.

Just jog along the way you always have and a loss will show up eventually. 9lb on the scales must have been a bit shocking.

    Ginette

    Hi Ginette,

Thanks for your support πŸ™‚ yes it was shock seeing 9 Ibs! in just one day, I’ve just checked again, and have lost it, so must have been a blip, I don’t see any water retention, such as swollen ankles but maybe muscle, it wasn’t “goods in transit” so must have been the hot weather…strange cos I lived overseas for many years, in much hotter climes, and never suffered, so think it must be “women of a certain age” problems..

Anyway have not felt like eating much today, and do feel a bit lethargic, also general consensus was too hot for Zumba, so I cancelled today, and feel quite relieved. Bought FBD book, will read it tomorrow as have an interview in the morning so swatting up. Will save the cold beer for tomorrow, and then start FBD…famous last words..

    love to all

    Hi All,

I realize there seems to be a lot of difference of opinion regarding how often to weigh. I present this for your consideration. What do you think?

    http://www.webmd.com/diet/obesity/20150619/daily-weigh-ins-keep-dieters-on-track?ecd=wnl_nal_062315&ctr=wnl-nal-062315_nsl-hdln_1&mb=PN4PsPVcI4aOvZ4RnufUduHnVev1imbCixecNdd6Qzc%3d

Beldyboop, when I get a reading like your 9 lbs, I generally get off the scale and get back on it again. In fact, my scale is a bit dodgy at times, so I generally weigh myself three times in a row. When I get the same number twice I tend to use that–at least, that’s what I’ve been doing since I noticed the discrepancy the past few weeks. This is just a suggestion in case it works for you. I was thinking of getting another scale as well, to use as comparison, but the scale I have was recommended by a good friend and was rather expensive. What do you think? Do all of you have one scale you use? I also thought about getting a travel scale and comparing it to the other one, but this is just a thought.

Also, I agree that it takes a while to adjust once at target, but I consider extra fast days and making the fast days water/psyllium/supplements only instead of 500-calories to be additional tools in my arsenal toward maintaining my target weight. Again, it probably isn’t as important for most of you if you go off by a few pounds/kilos, but let me tell you, even an ounce makes a difference when you flip around upside down, etc.!

DJ757575 I think there seems to be a misunderstanding–or at least I hope so. I don’t recall anyone talking about a 5 day mimic fast, but a 5 hour eating window is my understanding, and these are two very different things. I wouldn’t recommend fasting for five days a week, though you might try throwing in one additional fast day. As I was approaching my goal I believe I did that for the last two or three weeks or so until I reached/surpassed my goal. At first I tried three non-consecutive fast days, and then I believe I tried one fast day, one or two feast day(s), and two consecutive fast days–and by fast days I mean water/psyllium/supplements only (roughly 166 calories or so). That shot me over the finish line but quick! That said, I wouldn’t recommend doing trying that (if you even think you might) until you get within 5 pounds/2.27 kilos/.36 stone of your goal. I think the idea is to sort of trick the body into releasing that last bit of weight, and don’t think it’s a good long-term strategy. I realize this is rather extreme, and if you tend to get headaches, etc. when fasting it might not be for you, but it really worked for me. Just a thought. What do you think?

BTW, I can’t recall if I mentioned it, but I’m doing one of those water/psyllium/supplements only fast days today (with an HIIT class later to boot!), and then another on Friday to trim down for Saturday’s festivities. I realize this might seem extreme, but I’m doing aerials again on Sunday, so want my weight in shape for that. I hope that makes sense.

    Happy feasting and fasting,

    Jayney

    Good Morning!

I’m not sure how I feel about the daily weighing. I’m giving it a go this week and this morning I was not happy! That’s what 2 pieces of pizza & too much chocolate will do for you. πŸ™ Carbs, carbs, carbs!! Oh well….today is a new day and I’ll try to stay away from the chocolate!

This is my Friday as we have off tomorrow for our 4th of July holiday. When the holiday falls on a Saturday, we always get Friday off. I’m just planning to putter around the house and hopefully get out for a run/walk. Saturday morning I’ll be at the golf course early to play in a tournament. Should be a fun day. Sunday will just be playing golf with my friends. Busy weekend!

Hope you all have a great Thursday!

    Hey Lori,

A word of advice–you might do better to stay away from the pizza than the chocolate. At least some types of chocolate are good for you–which is more than I can say about pizza–though I like pizza too. Just FYI.

Sounds like you’ve got a golfing weekend planned! I’m going to be recording again on the Saturday–at the event with the free hot dogs, root beer, ice cream, and popcorn! That’s why I fasted yesterday and will do so again tomorrow. Also, I forgot to mention is that WHENEVER I do a water/psyllium/supplements only fast (only in preparation for holidays and special occasions now–but what I did exclusively before maintenance) I eat nothing from after dinner the night before to breakfast the DAY AFTER the fast (roughly a 36-hour fast or so). Combine that with possible exercise as well (i.e. HIIT class last evening) and the results are amazing! Just FYI.

    Best to you all!

    Jayney

Hi Janey, thanks for the advice, but there is something floating around about a 5 day mimic fast, and I finally found the link to Dr. Longo’s research. His focus is far more upon fasting and the effects it has on the aging process, but I think gaining 2 benefits in one go (better older mind/body, less weight) are intriguing.

I will definitely be trying the window method though, and thanks for you information on that.

    http://michelsonmedical.org/2014/12/26/igf-1-fasting-discussion-valter-longo/

    Hi DJ:

You might check this out. The research has been published: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/lifestyle/wellbeing/diet/11686002/Why-weve-all-been-doing-the-Fast-Diet-wrong.html

    Good Luck!

    Hi Beldyboop

I am so pleased that the 9lbs have disappeared. At least it was a temporary gain.

    Hi Lori, DJ and Janey

Interesting research simcoe. As I am doing this to lose weight in the first instance I shan’t be trying it. Also I don’t like the suggested menus. At least with the 500 calorie method I can choose what I like.

I tend not to eat at lunch time or breakfast I may eat some fruit about 2.30 – 4.30 and dinner about 8.30 – 9.30. Of course I do have lunch occasionally. I never liked breakfast so that is no real miss. I eat when I feel hungry.

It has worked for me so far. Last week I didn’t lose ant weight but I do suffer from water retention in the hot weather. So I hope it will show up eventually as I did tree fast days last weeks and I am doing three this week. Anything to get a result!

    Ginette

    Hi there!

Am hoping to start FBD v.soon, now have the book, kind of worth it, as it means it’s all in one place for reference but felt it was trying to “fill pages” at times… although I did like some of the recipes…I was surprised to see Mimi having a “swirl” of honey on yoghurt etc…isn’t honey a bad sugar for FBD? lol I’m probably missing something.

I was about to start FBD today, as have had staff meal, and also an interview for a job, which were my milestones to cross before I started, but tomorrow a friend is arriving/staying with me, who is an a genuine foodie, so not sure how much of a party pooper I can be. I don’t drink wine anymore since 5:2, so that’s a start, although ice-cold beer is suddenly becoming very appealing.

I will make a decision on Monday as to whether to start, friend is staying for 10 days, but will come and go. Am enjoying the 2 FD’s and Fri “window” 4-8pm, no news on the scales as not going there but feel a bit “blobby” hope it’s transitory. Keep on reminding myself that I’m doing this not just to look good in a bikini, I’ll make mine a one-piece please, but to cultivate more mindfulness about overall health, so am thinking internal and external changes, there’s still downward trend, with ups and downs, but heading on down to October my goal weight of 9 stone, 10 3 Ibs currently. I think the FBD could be amazing, just trying to get in the right frame of mind..

    Sorry for the mega ramble
Hi Ginette, Salma, Milena, and everyone else!
    Have a good weekend! x

Nooo Beldy, me marra – ya’ll just hev to git a grip lass!!!!

The idea of getting into a bikini would be a huge incentive for me, were it not for the fact that me in a bikini would frighten dogs and small children! I did promise to post of photo of me in a bikini on the maintenance thread when I get there, but by then I will have mastered photoshop – or I could just post a photo of Kate Upton in a bikini – she is my doppelganger!!!

I still had three glasses of fizzy in the bottle last night after my boy’s birthday meal, at 11.30 I poured a glass for bed and chucked the rest down the kitchen sink – now that’s a first!

Started FBD today, doing a water fast – cheating a bit by drinking tea – sooo much easier, I know Applepie has some flavoured water, sensible woman. Much better than just water – just 14 hours to go – trying not to count the minutes.

So can I suggest you write down a plan – with a start date – or just start and on your social days put FBD on hold, even if you delay for the ten days, but make an effort to do something extra to make up for it – extra walks or exercise each day, low carbs, or something – better than putting it off altogether. Remember the 80/20 rule, Pareto’s rule. 20% of your effort will produce 80% of the result, so doing some of the days and weeks might give you a surprise!

Anyway, I’m starting to feel lonely now! Just wish I was as close to target as you have, with just a wee push you will be on target by October.

Think I’ll get that photo of Kate Upton to put on the fridge as an incentive- the resemblance is remarkable – from a mile if you are half blind without specs! Will at least bring a smile to my boys’ faces!

    Hi ladies,

Just checking in before I go to sleep.

Beldyboop, good luck on the FBD, but if I were you, I would not attempt to do it while your friend is there.. why make it harder than it needs to be? Why not wait until they are gone to start? 10 days is neither here nor there, really. That’s my two cents’ worth, anyway.

Lori, I am guilty of daily weighing, but will only record the weight on a Monday morning. The weight varies crazily, but I only stick with the Monday figure.

DJ, intersting about Dr. Longo’s research. I have read the link and it does make sense, but I, like Ginette, would rather have variety in my 500 cals. However, I think it may be useful to try in the maintenance phase?
Janey and Ginette.. it is very nice to see you guys around here. We do miss you.

    Good night all,

    Salma

    Hi All

Thanks for the added info for the 5-day mimic fast. Salma, I agree with you that during maintenance would be the best time to try it out. I originally had thought of combining both 5:2 and the mimic fast, but I think I would then be putting too much pressure on myself and also defeating the purpose of a 5:2 WOL.

I do have to get myself back on track though. I have been living in “holiday mode” mindset and have pretty well thrown all caution to the wind. Now I am up 1.5 lbs and feeling pretty angry at myself. It is one thing to relax a little on your holiday, it is another to inhale vast amounts of cheese, crackers and all those other bad things that I have stayed away from for the past 5 months. Then there is the amount of alcohol that has been poured into me during Montreal’s biggest and best 10 day party of the year (Jazz Fest).

I am back to tracking my food, have thrown out the balance of the cheese and crackers and have vowed to limit myself to 1 drink a day during the balance of Jazz Fest and the subsequent Festival d Γ©tΓ© I will be attending in Quebec City for 4 days (more music). At least Im exercising pretty vigorously, or the damage would have been far worse! Looking forward to posting a weight reduction on my official Monday weigh in.

    Hi peeps

Have just got back from Zumbathon, 2560 cals burnt! very surprised but it was very hot!. Have been dithering about FBD as have a friend staying but am going to make some meal cards, somebody’s great idea on this forum, so that I just don’t think too much, friend won’t be with me all the time. I’ve found if I think about meals instead of calories it’s much more manageable, and although I did poo-poo the FBD book a bit, there are some good ways of putting “food together” which is great, so went out and bought the food in for several meals…love the idea of beetroot salad, and watercress and orange

Also read the recipe for Virgin Mojiitos and think that will be a great idea to kick the booze, and have got the ingredients. I’m also thinking of major motivations, to keep me going. One is am thinking of the internal fat and letting it go, that will be an incentive for my 53rd bday in October.

Another is clothes, as an “inverted triangle” with broad shoulders, and a back, which on a bad day seems almost Bison-like, lol! I think that once I’ve shifted more weight I’ll have the confidence to show of my better features (my torso) At the Zumbathon there were women of all shapes and sizes, I would love to be able to “strut” my stuff, in clothes like vest tops, but often end up with the looser type t-shirt in an effort not to show off my back, (and butt) anyone else out there feel my pain? So onwards and upwards. Milena you are not alone, once I’ve made my meal plans and drank a Mojiito, I’ll start Mon…friend arrives in wee hours tomorrow.

Ginette how is it going with the heat? it’s been a very hot day here
Salma, you’re right about 10 days, but I’m going to do FD’s while friend goes on a few trips, and hopefully cobble FBD together
DJ that Jazz fest sounds great, I would be the same
Janeyw, my weight does tend to swing dramatically, so I give the scales a wide birth..hope you’re well..:)

Up and down week for me – 3 FDs but rather too much in the way of socialising! Having said that, I haven’t been letting myself go too wild, although last night we were dining at a friend’s and I felt I did have to eat more than I really wanted to – yes, really. She had gone to such an effort…
However, I lay in bed last night with my stomach like a cannonball thinking that occasionally that is the way it goes, especially dining in a dear friend’s home. In a restaurant it’s easy to leave food, ask for no potatoes or extra veg. I feel pleased that I am becoming so much more aware of what I’m eating. I actually didn’t pig out last night by my previous standards, but my stomach has definitely got used to smaller meals – hurray for that I say!
Today has been a FD so feeling a bit more on top of things again…

    Hi ladies,

Kate, I have been suffering this syndrome for a while now with dinners and invitations. It sounds horrible to be complaining about this, but it does throw a spanner in the works doesn’t it, and especially when you are invited to someone’s home. I sympathise completely.

I am still following the 5 hour window method until mid July, so at least I know that I am not overdoing it even when I have been guilty of eating a piece of ice cream cake (Oreo ice cream cake to boot). I hate to think how many additional and unnecessary calories were in that piece.

    Stay well and happy fasting.

    Salma

    Hi Ladies

I’ve been giving Salma’s syndrome a lot of thought, I’ve had a month of socialising, and managed to lose 5 lbs in June, starting the month going upwards and having a number of times where the same couple of pounds went on and off, and even managed to put back on 4 of those 5 lbs on the first two days of July – did a 36 hour water fast yesterday and did alright today, hopefully it will come back off as I was hopeful of losing 10 lbs on FBD, now it is a stone, already looking bleak – but should I feel guilty about celebrating my boy’s birthday?

I seem able to lose weight quite well, but I seem to put it back on anytime I socialise – and especially any time I take a few days off from this WOL. Sometimes it seem as though I have the task of losing the same few pounds again and again – which isn’t true, like you Salma, the weight is going down.

Then it occurred to me, what great training for when we get to maintenance – the aim of 5:2 after all is to get to weight and stay there by going to maintenance, which is the ability to lose the same 2 or 3 or even 4 or 5 lbs again and again…… and again. And I’ll bet we’ll become bloody good at it!

And the real success of what we are doing to to learn that skill. Losing weight is not nearly as hard as keeping it off, as we know from the lack of success of diets.

Puts a whole new perspective of what we are doing – for me anyway.

And that means NOT feeling guilty or being disheartened by blips of any kind, as long as we get back in the saddle – and plan to do something to help the weight loss, so that we are not just gaining and losing the same few pounds, but that every month’s loss is an extra pound or two. And there are so many ways to do it, all of which we already do. 4:3, ADF, water fasts, target TDEEs – NOT eating that piece of cake, walking, running, and even early nights.

We are all on a journey, and for those of us who have very long road to travel, and who can’t see out feet, never mind the end of the road, so lets make every day a positive and guilt free day- a social life is real life, and bottle of wine is a joy, and a piece of birthday cake is a celebration – and the occasional stuffed tummy is ABSOLUTELY NORMAL. I’ll be willing to bet though that we have all made huge strides in being able to eat less than we did before – most of the time! So now, when we do any of these things, we should all see them as are opportunities to practice maintenance!

    Well that’s my perspective!

“To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive, and the true success is in to labour”

Milena, thank you for your fabulous post. I’ve had a few days of being off plan. Guilt feelings start to creep in, but as you said, I will not give up and I will be back to plan come Monday morning! I have just been having a bit of maintenance practice, that’s all! πŸ˜‰

Yesterday’s golf tournament was rained out, so a friend and I went to the mall and walked around. A trip to the grocery store when I was starving led to buying(and eating) things that I rarely eat. Just sat here watching it rain and thinking about what I could eat next. Sigh…… Today I’ll finally get to play golf and move around a bit more. YAY!

This week will find the husband and me going to my sister’s and then for 2 days, we’re all going to the women’s US Open professional golf tournament. Lots of walking, but lots of eating “odd” things. No worries…we’ve been looking forward to this for a long time and I mean to enjoy every minute!

Thank you all for the support and insight that you provide here. It gives me a boost whenever I’m feeling a bit low.

    Have a great day!

    Hello All,

Beldyboop and Salma many thanks for your support. I will continue posting here as much as I’m able. Milena, thanks for your post and for the maintenance perspective. Being on maintenance myself that really makes a lot of sense. Speaking of gaining pounds and losing them again and again…in anticipation of yesterday’s celebration of American independence from the lot of you Brits out there, I did TWO water/psyllium/supplements only fast days last week. I was thinking of calorie reduction the remaining days, but tried just sticking to my usual TDEEs for those days and wound up 2 pounds/.9 kilos/.1 stone UNDER goal by yesterday morning.

Boy did I pig out yesterday! I attended two events–the first one was a public celebratory picnic where I was recording. There were free hot dogs, crisps, root beer, and ice cream (not soft-serve–handmade by a local company) in cones. The second event was a party at my ex’s with his current partner. There were lots of snack foods, hamburgers, and two different desserts.

Even though I knew I’d be attending the party later I decided to experiment at the picnic and ended up having TWO plain hot dogs, a small bag of Cheetos, a glass of root beer (from a keg no less!), and ice cream in a cone.

At the party, still in full experimental mode I had NO snacks since I was pretty full from the picnic, but then went on to have some salad, TWO plain hamburgers, TWO coconut fried shrimp, and later, a slice of some sort of cream/cheese? pie with fresh apple slices and berries on top (mostly strawberries and blueberries), and a small chocolate parfait. Bear in mind that amid all this I still managed to have my daily allotment of all 6 Tablespoons of olive oil!

I didn’t even bother to sort out how many calories all THAT was. I really don’t want to know. However, when I weighed myself this morning my weight was UP 2.8 pounds/1.27 kilos/.2 stone altogether. I suppose that’s to be expected, but the good part is that because I was UNDER goal to start I am now only .8 pounds/.4 kilos/.06 stone OVER goal. Calorie restriction (maybe 350+ calories BELOW suggested TDEE) and a water/psyllium/supplements only fast day tomorrow should get me BELOW goal again by Tuesday morning’s weigh-in.

I only bring all of this up to say that in this WOL you CAN have your cake and eat it too–literally–surely once you get to maintenance, and within reason before as well. Yes, I spent all last week preparing for yesterday’s festivities, but in the end I think it was worth it, and plan to do that again the next time.

There is a street festival this coming weekend where I plan to record. That will give me another opportunity to try this again. I think this time I’ll still do the two water/psyllium/supplements only fast days, but will try calorie restriction on all feast days leading up to Saturday. With any luck my weight will drop to 2+ pounds/.9+ kilos/.1+ stone UNDER goal by Saturday morning. I might add that this coming Saturday (like this past Saturday) there is only ONE event with food (unlike the TWO I attended yesterday), so I don’t expect to pig out anywhere near to the same degree as I did yesterday. However, I tend to be a planner, so as long as I can plan for these events and act accordingly, it’s great to think I might finally be getting a handle on how/what to eat on holidays! Sorry to go on, but this is a big deal for me!

All the best to you all. Have a great week ahead!

Wow Janey! That is some serious food intake πŸ™‚
It is so nice to see people being more relaxed about this WOL and NOT letting guilt override common sense. We ARE in this for the long haul, and, speaking from experience, a long haul is pretty long.. you simply will not last the distance with too much deprivation for too long. That is the beauty of this 5:2 WOL. You do have to restrict, but it is not an interminable view into the future. You get to live a normal life and enjoy normal food, but you do need to put in some effort to keep the weight of. It is not a regimen where things are forbidden or allowed. I, for one, love that.

Thanks Milena for the perspective. So true. Sometimes, I have to remind myself of this when the scales are being particularly horrible, but this weekend, I rewarded my self with a couple of new outfits that didn’t look too bad. I am so pleased that I have gone back to my BIG MINUS clothes. The next is to get into my NORMAL PLUS range before finally settling into the NORMAL. A big step in the right direction, methinks.

Tomorrow is weighing day. I wait with bated breath and will report success or failure. Gulp!!

    Good night everyone.

    Salma

so we’re now all waiting with bated breath to see if Salma is having a weightloss or maintenance this week – win – win!!!!

    lol!

Just read a piece about yet another reality programme – what else? Might be from ten years ago of course, thats google!

Bridezilla boot camp, apparently, the trainer (as always very slim and very pretty) said she was pleased they had used a tape measure as well as scales, one of the contestants has one of the lowest weight losses, but one of the most drastic shape changes!!

So get the tape measure out!

    Monday morning weigh-in : 84.8 Kg
This means a 0.8 Kg (1.8 lb) loss this week. I am ecstatic.
How did this happen? I haven’t exactly been angelic although I have stuck to the 5 hour eating window since mid June.
    Have I stumbled on something?
Whatever the reason, I am a happy bunny this morning.

    Salma

Quick question salma, is the 5 hour eating window every day or every other day?

Way to go Salma!!! Although I think you got my loss for this week as scales not budged…however if I told you everything I’ve eaten or drunk this week you’d be amazed I haven’t gained…the beauty of this wol is its flexibility I think. Back to a quiet life this week, so hopefully should do a little better this time around.

Well done on your inspirational loss though!

    Hi all,

Salma, I bet you’re pleased! that’s fab πŸ™‚ great motivation!
The general vibe of not feeling too guilty must be catching!. Yesterday was at a festival also, did not have a lot to eat all day, but did have beer and a white chocolate Magnum, felt great sunshine, music and good company.

Today is FBD! and will find a way. Am saying to myself, “today you can’t have treats, tomorrow who knows” if i say it everyday, sure it will be good day by day control, and we have got a to live a little! Have friend staying so am being mindful, but am def off the wine/beer for 6 weeks, 17 Aug, will be end date. FBD book does say little changes have a big impact. I’ve been struggling with running as have minor hip injury, but last night left my trainers out, as an incentive to run. Have just returned from said run! so a good start to the week, hip seems to be on the mend..

Hope people have a happy Fasting. Salma the window also works for me, just don’t really get why, but I find it “easier” than fasting, don’t feel I’m depriving myself too much..Milena are you on FBD?
    Hi to everyone else!

Congratulations Salma! Isn’t it great to see a loss when you were expecting a gain! Woohoo!!

I’m ready to get back on the Fast 5 train. I don’t know why I think I can’t do the 5 hour eating window on the weekend. I really have to get a hold of myself and stick to it EVERY day. I’m going to take a break from the scale and have chosen Monday, August 3rd as my next weigh in. I was rereading the new book by the author of Fast 5 and he suggests staying away from the scale. I’ll go by what I see in the mirror and how my clothes are fitting and just check the scale every few weeks.

This week will be a test as I’ll be out of my normal routine from Thursday on. We’ll be at my sister’s and all of us are going to the Women’s US Open golf tournament. There’s no reason I can’t stick to my 5 or 6 hour window, so I hope I can be strong. My sister likes to do the eating window too, so hopefully we’ll keep each other straight! πŸ˜‰

    Have a great Monday!

    Hi Salma

go girl!!!! So chuffed for you.

Hi Beldy, yup, second water fast of FBD today, Ill see how it goes.

Ive been doing a bit of googling this weekend, as getting concerned about my legs. Someone gave their measurements on another thread which go me wondering, my bust and hips are within a couple of inches, my waist actually smaller, height similar, yet Im more than two stone heavier. Im shrinking but my thighs are not reducing much, altough there is less swelling in my knees and ankles.

Anyway, started searching for something I had glanced at a few weeks ago – Lipodema and Lymphodema. As lipodema affects symetrically, I suspect I have this.

Doctor told me last year it was water on the knee, possibly arthritis in on knee – trestment – elevate legs, lose weight.

So, before I go back, anyone here suffering, apparently it affects 11% of women, and is often seen as simply obesity. Perhaps that is all mine is, certainly less pain with less weight.

    Hi Milena,

I suffer with knee pain as well, but it is getting better with the weight loss. I also have trouble losing around the thighs and have a small(ish) waist. My biggest problem area is the thighs. When I measure they seem to lose a lot less than other areas.

Elc72. Welcome. I do the 5 day eating window every day, and will have completed a month by mid July. It seems to work for me. I am intending to take a couple of weeks break after that and to go back to the normal 5:2 and then do a window method for a further 3 weeks or so before I go on holiday. Let’s see if I can manage it.

    Salma

    Thank you salma

Good morning everyone, I have been catching up with interest. So many insightful comments about this being a WOL, including guilt free occasions being a part of that. I concur!!
Re weight loss in some areas more than others… I have heard there is usually a rather genetic first on, last off principle…. so it may seem like a ‘problem area’ is not budging as quickly as the rest. I too have thighs from the Star Trek planet of Klingon, though am noticing reductions in waist, hips, arms and even neck! Never measured neck before 5-2, and kinda rolled eyeballs as I did, but it is definitely more Audrey Hepburn-esque!!
Milena, I had done some research on lymphedema due to my upcoming surgery risk, and stumbled across lipodema by accident. Apparently the quick visual marker often shows normal feet and or hands, and then an instant puff beginning in ankles or wrists. Try googling Doctors tv show- they interviewed a woman with it.
Another hot fast day here. Boiled egg and coffee, then made a big batch of yummy healthy chilled gazpacho on the weekend – still have some left for later in day, and some salad with canned salmon. Not wanting to heat the house any more.
Roofers are busy heavily thumping about on roof overhead [no Dancer or Prancer among them] terrifying the dog and cat.
Best wishes on your week. I weigh tomorrow….. actually I do weigh daily, but only record Tues.

Welcome Elc72!. Salma congratulations and isn’t nice to start moving downward through the clothes sizes. I think your good karma is catching as my official weigh in yesterday also showed a 1.5 loss, so at least my 1.5 gain from last week’s indulgences has been erased.

Now that I am at 130 lbs (right on the nose) it has given me the push to get serious about those last 2 annoying lbs so that I can finally say that I reached goal. I will probably take the 5:2 program through to the end of August in hopes that I reach 125 lbs, which I think will be a good floating range (125 – 128).

Today is not a fast day for me, but I plan to stick to liquids during the day. It is my youngest son’s birthday today and I am taking him, my older son and the girlfriends to an amazing little African/Creole restaurant for supper. The food is to die for, and I want to indulge. Take care all.

    Hi All,

I’m glad to hear things are moving along. As for me, my goal was to get ideally to 2-3 pounds/.9-1.4 kilos/.2 stone BELOW goal by Friday in preparation for yet another event this Saturday.

As I did last week, I’ve decided to have two water/psyllium/supplements only fast days this week (from dinner the night before to breakfast the day after–roughly 36 hours). However, differently from last week, I decided to reduce calories on feast days. For days where I work out I’m having roughly 300 calories lower than my usual TDEE. Also, normally I would have two refeed days a week, but this week I’m reducing those calories as well and only have one refeed day (on Saturday).

I’m right chuffed at this point because as of this morning I’m ALREADY 2.1 pounds/~1 kilo/.2 stone BELOW goal–and it’s only Wednesday! Just think where I’ll be by Saturday morning!

Also, Beldyboop I’m very pleased you’ve decided to try making meal cards. Do you put them in a diary/planner, have electronic/online versions, or just carry them around? Just curious and glad I could help. I’d be lost without my meal cards. In fact, due to the calorie restriction of this week I’ve made up more cards, but now that I’ve got them I can reuse them at will.

    Take care everyone,

    Jayney

    Hi Janeyw

I’ve been reading your posts on the maintenance thread – glad to see you are getting into the swing of the maintenance lark, enjoy your weekend, you’ve prepared well and and you’ve earned it!

I love reading your posts, you are inspiring!!!

How are things on the jobs front?

    Hi Everyone

Greetings from the sunshine! today if it kills me will do some marking on the beach! hope I don’t get suntan lotion on the papers πŸ˜‰

I’ve hit a plateau…a bit gutting but if I’m honest have had to semi-abandon FBD this week as friend with me, but also my FD’s are sometimes over 500, 550-600. Yesterday was very good on FD until 7pm, when decided to throw caution to the wind, and have 2 pieces of toast! yes, on a sunny day what could be more appropriate, lol..no real damage done, 800 cals totes..this doesn’t happen on every FD, but I’ve got to be mindful that sometimes it’s more emotional hunger, than hunger itself.

Checked Fitbit, and average cals are 1400, average burn is 2477, so again should be some loss at the end of the week. I do suffer from water retention, and am also hypothyroid, but also think that with this last 17 Ibs I have to lose, it ain’t going to go quick. Phoebe, love the image of the ST planet! My issue is my back, which stubbornly and proudly remains the same..
Milena congrats on water fast, amazing willpower! not sure I could do that
Salma hi! hope the window is going great.
Janey, I write the meal plans on paper, and have them stashed in my diary …great idea saves a lot of hassle..:)
Am going to sneak in a FD tomorrow while friend is on day trip, lots of good vibes to all…

    Hello ladies..
I have been under the radar recently, but still reading everyone’s posts. A group hi..

Today was my weigh in at the nutritionist. I really was not expecting the result as my own scales give higher readings, but this time, I weighed in at 82.9. Kg. Last time, I was 86.5, so this is a total loss of 3.6 Kgs in a little less than a month and a half. I am really pleased! My BMI has dropped to 28.7 which is 3.7 shy of the highest “normal”.

So, I am within sight of my interim goal of 80Kg by end of August (my 55th birthday).
On another note, the reason I have been a bit AWOL recently is because there is a bit of a change on the work front. I have been approached for a new position and have been negotiating the different aspects. Today, I got a formal (decent) offer that I think I will accept. So major changes ahead. I have requested that the start date be beginning of January, and they accepted. This means I will be able to take about 2 months off between jobs, which is wonderful for me as I haven’t had such a long time off for several years.

So, at the end of the year, I am hoping to start a new job and be at my target weight. How cool is that? Please keep all fingers and toes crossed for me. I can use all the positive energy I can get. Beldy.. it must have been your vibes that clinched the deal πŸ™‚

Have a great weekend one and all.

    Salma

Salma!!! What great news! You are on your way to goal and a new job…with a couple months off too! WOW! So happy for you.

We just got home today from my sister’s. We had a lot of fun watching the professional lady golfers at the US Open for 2 days. Now we’ll watch the last 2 rounds on TV this weekend.

Well, I have a new goal. We are going on a 2 week vacation in mid September that will include a hike on Mt Rainier in Washington. I ordered a couple pair of the zip off leg pants to take along and they came in the mail today. Hmmm…..I can’t quite get them buttoned. πŸ™ I did order a size smaller than I’m currently in, so it’s no big surprise. I love them and am determined to have them fit in 2 months time. I’m thinking 10-15 lbs will do it, so I have no time to waste.

Hi to everyone and I’m glad to be “back in the loop”!

Fantastic Salma – sounds like great news all round (esp the two months off part, wow!) Target weight and a new job sound fantastic.

Lori, think you’ve made a mistake with those pants….you will need TWO sizes smaller by mid Sept I’m sure!

    Kate Eve x

Salma that’s such good news! congrats, the weight loss and new job sound brilliant, so nice to get some time off πŸ™‚ bet you’re pleased!

am having mindful day,as my friend went off for a day trip, and home alone and fasting..Already been to one yoga class today, as a guinea pig for a friend starting out, it was awesome..Tonight am going to my normal yoga, so am pretty pleased, as am at home with a pile of essays to mark, not conducive for me for a FD, I prefer to be out and about, but there we go. Am being good, and as the past 10 days have been a semi-write off, am reminding myself that this WOL does work, and despite the slipping am still on track, at least no weight on, but have been the same for 3 weeks now πŸ™

Friend leaves Wed, so can get back to normal. I’m also in process of finding out if I got a new job, which would be a huge change, ( must be catching Salma) so a bit in “limbo” but have a plan B very firmly in place..;-)

Hope it’s not as rainy with you, as it is here, lots of love to all

Hi All, hope your weekend is going well.
Well done Salma that’s fantastic with the weight loss, new job and time off too and hopefully you will be at goal too that’s great.

I’ve had a great weekend but not a great weight loss this week, but it was only to be expected with being out last weekend and eating and drinking too much (it was very enjoyable though) so I was surprised last week when I lost 2lb, but then I had a week of eating a little too much this week even with 2 FDs, so my weigh in is a Saturday morning and I was 2lb up, then had to go out to a 80th birthday garden party followed by my friends leaving BBQ, I had good intentions of not eating too much and not drinking but did both, so have had an emergency FD today to try and minimise the damage, will have two more FDs on Tuesday and Thursday ready for weigh in on Saturday morning (hopefully with the loss of the 2lb I gained this week) then it’s holiday in Northumberland with the girls so more eating and drinking for a week, don’t think I’ll manage a FD then but might try a 5 hour window one ore two days if I can.
Sorry for the long post but needs to let it out.
Wish me luck for this week.
Good luck everyone with your FDs, FBDs 5 hour windows and everything else.
    Bye for now. X

Thank you everyone for the cheers. It does feel good.
Good luck Norlandlass, I really know what it is like to have enjoyable, but difficult-to-control social events. I had almost two months of that and my weight just got totally stuck. The trick, I found, is to keep a cheery outlook and not to get too fixated about reaching THE target in a specific time frame. On the weight loss journey, life happens, and thank goodness it does. How dreary it would be if all we could think about was how much each morsel of food weighed in calorie-wise. Life is to be lived, and as you day, “containing the damage” is the way to go until you are on a more even keel and you are able to control your eating days better.

A heartfelt “best of luck” wish to you Norlanlass and to all of us struggling to regain some of our past allure πŸ™‚

    Salma

    Hi All,

Sorry to be so out of touch, but I was recording this past Friday night, at a festival all day Saturday, at a theatre Saturday night, and at yet another festival all day Sunday. Then I had a job interview first thing in the morning yesterday. After all that I’m pooped to say the least! I have another interview scheduled for tomorrow, so things are moving along.

Speaking of this past weekend, just to reiterate, last week after two water/psyllium/supplements only fast days and before my only refeed day I reduced down to 3.7 pounds/1.7 kilos/.3 kilos BELOW my goal weight. I did this on purpose in anticipation of two back-to-back refeed days (Saturday–technically last week, and Sunday–this week). Well I’m thrilled to say it worked–at least for me. By yesterday morning I was still .1 pound/.05 kilos UNDER goal! I don’t plan to make a habit of this, but it’s nice to know such a thing is possible. I hope this helps.

Regarding the gym debate, I think you all might know I do strength training thrice weekly (a no-brainer for me since I do it to warm up for my aerial activities), and I also take an HIT (Tabata) class weekly. Apparently four times weekly (especially considering the below) is a minimum for me.

Lori_PA, I noticed that you’ll be going on a 2 week vacation in mid September that will include a hike on Mt Rainier in Washington. Will you be in Seattle as well? It’s only about 250 miles or so from there. If so, please let me know. It would be great to meet up if the logistics work out and it would be possible.

All the best to everyone–feasting or fasting,

    Jayney

Jayne..yes, we’ll be in Seattle from 9/13 – 9/19. We rented a condo in the Belltown section of the city. I’m hoping it’s nice as I’ve been reading some negative reviews of the area. We won’t be out wandering around late at night, so we should be fine. Would love to meet you! I didn’t realize that you were in Seattle. Let’s work it out! The Macrina bakery is in the first floor of our condo building. Seems to be a famous place. Will talk more about it in the next few weeks.

    Hi Lori,

That’s just down the hill from me–maybe 10 minutes’ drive! I’m looking forward to meeting you in September!

That sounds great Jayne! We planned extra days in Seattle so we would have some free time and not be racing from one thing to another all week. When we leave there on the 19th, we’re heading down the Oregon Coast for another week.

Rough night here with thunder storms and not much sleep. Then at 3AM the cat woke me up and after putting her out, I really couldn’t get back to sleep. I’m up now and getting ready for boot camp. I hope it energizes me!

Haircut/color and pedicure after work and then home to crash. I’m off work tomorrow to play in a golf tournament, so that will be a fun day.

Still working my eating window thing. Some days the window gets stretched to 6 hours rather than 5, but no worries.

    Have a great day!

    Hey Lori,

I’m glad you’ve already got extra time slated for Seattle. Have you been here before? It would be my pleasure to show you around if time and schedules allow! You have a great day too!

No Jayne, this is our first trip to Seattle! It has been on our list for quite some time. Hope we can work out our schedules to spend some time together!

    hello everyone,
Catching up here…….. and happy to report I have finally hit the 1 stone mark!
Lori – I think I might have stayed at that same condo a couple of years ago – same building anyways!! very clean and new inside…. AND the bakery is soooo wonderful [as is their large glass art wall]. It was great, and perfect for skedaddling about during the day, walkable to market, shopping, even space needle, but there seems to be a bit of a dodgy area nearby come evening so cab it later.
Best wishes this week with your goals. Cheers for now.

    Good evening everyone..

It has been slow round here recently.. I guess we are all tired.. kind of midway through our ‘struggle’.

Phoebe and Lori, what a coincidence.. Isn’t this world a strange one?!
Congratulations Phoebe on the loss.. doesn’t it feel great? I still have a long way to go (I am less than mid way) but I haven’t been the weight I am at now for two or three years now. It surely feels good to be able to fit in stuff that I had more or less put away.

It has been, what? almost six months since the start, so just think, I will be near my ideal weight in another six months. It isn’t easy, but it isn’t too hard either.. and it is not too difficult to live with this new Way Of Life.

My experiment with “window” eating is coming to an end tomorrow and I have had interesting results. It has shaken my weight out of its slumber and I have managed to make a decent loss this month. I am wondering what will happen in the next month when I am back to the normal 5:2 system. We learn a lot by experimenting, and I think that changing things around a bit helps by jogging our bodies out of they routines.

I have also promised myself to go back to the gym in August, but I have been promising myself this for some time now and it hasn’t materialised yet. I’ll keep you posted.

Good luck to all those fasting tomorrow.. Are you guys finding that things are getting harder or easier as we go along this path? Your insights would be helpful to me and to others.

    Salma

    Hi Lori,

I’m glad you’ve got extra time booked for Seattle and hope our schedules align so we can spend some time together. I’m looking forward to it already!

Phoebe, you’re right that Belltown can be a bit interesting (in the Chinese sense) after dark. It’s certainly best to be cautious, but to me that holds true whenever one is in unfamiliar surroundings.

Salma, if you’re having a hard time getting to the gym, this is just a thought, but it might be the gym. I recently joined another gym (in addition to the one I joined initially–long story, but I got such a deal on the first gym, and it so conveniently located that I’ll never leave it). The second gym has a weekly Tabata class at a great time for me (tonight, in fact) with a wonderful instructor, and one personal training session per month is included in membership. I must admit that the training isn’t what I thought it would be, but the club is willing to work with me to get it right, and that’s what matters most to me. Anyway, I bring this up to say that if another gym that’s close to you might be one you’d go to more often, perhaps that’s an option to explore.

As for the harder or easier question, I’m not sure that it’s either for me–it just is. How’s that for a zen answer ;-)?

    Jayney
