  • Hi Happy,
When I lost 7 lb in 7 days I was not on medication. Also I cut to 1000 cals on non fast days. That is a harsh level to maintain longterm.

I have decided to stay with 1200 on non fast days( it’s doable-just)

I suspect I am retaining fluid but I won’t be coming off medication anytime soon as I need to sleep at night. Physio starts this Friday, let’s hope that helps.

Next week I may try water only on two fast days per week.

I know you lose weight easily on 5:2 but we are not all the same. I record calories and am strict with levels plus I keep active, doing my best here.

    Sorry jojo,

I wasn’t suggesting you should do your 7lb loss week every week or that you aren’t trying!

I must admit I wasn’t sure whether it was a rhetorical question or not?! Now I know 🙂

Hopefully you’re just on a very long plateau and your weight will start moving again at some point. Sleep deprivation hinders weight loss, you’re in constant pain and on meds, and you’ve got more life stress going on (house move). Perhaps when one or more of those resolves, you can start shrinking again.

And on the subject of shrinking…Wee!
Fantastic news on maintenance, and your total weight loss – what a first 5:2 anniversary you’re going to have! You deserve ice cream methinks!

Thanks for the links RT. I have just fired the Tedtalks over to my son. He refuses to believe that there is good science behind this way of life. Having the chief neuroscience research at John Hopkins puts a bit of weight behind what I am saying.

    Hi Jojo

AnneChristine just posted info on Southern Hemispherites that she was told that continuous calorie restriction in women leads to the necessity of further calorie restriction to maintain weight. Have you read any research that would confirm this?

If this is true, then the takeout message is that intermittent fasting is indeed the answer to weight control. And that the body responds to the variation in levels of feast and famine. We need the variation of 4:1 to sustain the weight loss effect in the body. Also for those of us who are carb responsive, that adds an extra layer! 🙄

    Cheers, Bay 🙂

Happy, I think graham crackers are similar to digestives? Does that sound any better?

Really enjoyed that Tedx talk, RT!

So glad to hear all your good news, Wee!

Tangawiwi, I hope you get some positive news and explanation soon.

Purple, so glad you enjoyed Boston. We were so ready for spring after the record-breakin snow this winter!

Last day of school tomorrow! I am gearing up for my son’s graduation party on Saturday. 60 people coming to my house! I love planning and prepping for parties! Mostly healthy stuff on the menu, of course! Hearty appetizers, bruschetta bar, including vegetarian options. Main dishes are fancy grilled flatbreads, again with lots of veggies, and a few different salads. A variety of desserts, but all mini-sized! Key lime pies, strawberry shortcakes, cannoli, and chocolate mousse. I have lots of fun themed decorations as well. Can’t wait!

My car broke down on my way to work yesterday. Engine seized from a seeming lack of oil, even though I had it changed the night before! Too coincidental not to be connected. The shop is still checking it out, but I am pretty sure it is well and truly dead. A new engine is thousands of dollars, so it may be time for a new (to me) car. We had hoped to make this one last another couple of years!

    Hi There Everyone!
RT- do not work to hard, I hope the spread sheets align for you and thank you for the links. I love new material.
Wiwi-Hoping for the best with your grandson.
Wee- you are an inspiration..congratulations on your weight.
jo-jo- because you are packing, you are gaining muscle, and probably retaining water, so you should go down soon. What are you going to eat today?
Happy- I left off the gramcrackers. I am so glad we only camp a few times a year, next time I am going just for the chocolate and marshmallow.

Today I did a 22/2 amazing. I also went to exercise class this morning. My TDEE was at about 500. I made some bone broth( send me beef bones please RT). I ate the fat off the bones and that is what I had for dinner with spinach.dessert- 1 tbs of peanut butter, 1 tbs of coconut oil , and 1 tbs of unsweetened cocoa.

    Good morning/evening all

It has been a busy time since we got home from Wales a few days ago, so only just catching up.

Heartening news Wiwi and Wee. So pleased things are looking positive for you both.

Hello Newbie – stick with us and keep us posted on your progress. You will find all the help and motivation you need here.

Ply – sorry to hear about the sad demise of your car. Hope you find a nice replacement. Your family party sounds great – what a brilliant hostess you are, but I hope you have some help will all that prep for 60 people!

Jojo – so sorry to hear you are still stuck. Those meds are a wretched nuisance. The body also retains fluid when the weather is particularly warm.

I’ve read information similar to Bay, in that the non-fast days should not be too calorie restrictive for any length of time and having a ‘normal’ eating day before a fast is more beneficial. That said I am now on my second fast day of week 2 of the Fast Beach diet and keeping to around 1200-1400 calories on non-fast days, but only for the 6 week programme.

It’s another warm day here and we are going to be busy catching up on the gardening. OH is going to have to be surgically removed from the mower! It’s our turn to host our monthly neighbourhood get-together tomorrow night which is always good fun, and I will be stretching my calorie allowance to include a few glasses of wine!

    Have a great day/evening all

    Smiffy xx

    Hi all,

A quick hello before I hit my bed – very late night here (12.30am) as watched an exciting football match and too wound up to sleep!

Bay isnt the risk of continuous calorie restriction known as the “Starvation Mode” where your metabolism slows down as a protective mechanism? I am certain thats why fasting works for me, however slowly! I give my system a good reboot every non fast day and it seems to be working. Previous (continual calorie restriction) diets were fine whilst I was able to maintain them, but the minute I stopped, the weight piled back on. I assume this was because my metabolism had slowed in response to the fact my body didn’t know I was dieting, it thought it was starving.

My house smells divine (to me) at present as a smoked ham hock has been simmering in preparation for some pea and ham soup tomorrow. Not really fasting food, but I will get all the fat off and add lots of veggies. Its my absolute favourite in winter! I will freeze it and ration serves!

Good luck with your party Ply, what a brave woman you are – 60 guests! But what a lovely celebration for your son. I am sure it will be a memorable night.

Smiffy I did laugh at your OH being ‘surgically removed from the mower’ – probably better than the mower being surgically removed from him!! You have fun with your socializing too!

I do envy you Northerners your warm weather!! Feeling so much more understanding of what you all went thru over your last Winter, fasting much harder in the cold, no matter how much hot soup I devour.

I better get some sleep, husband been in bed over an hour and he will wake me early in the morning!
    Night all X

Hey everyone thank you for the welcome! It seems like a nice little family you have got going here!

For me : Fast Day today, first one!
dinner: chicken fillet with cup of veggies (broccoli & carrots)
I am not sure how many calories that is but it cant be bad ?!? can it? 😉

To be honest the day wasn’t so bad BUT now that I have eaten I want to continue eating LOL.

I am waiting for my cycle to arrive so I’m unsure that my weights will be accurate for this and next week.

    Happy,
It’s ok Happy, I know you are trying to help. It doesn’t really matter what any research says my body gains weight if I exceed 1200 cals on any day. Lots of recorded proof of that, every trip, every holiday, literally one pound per day, it’s a bugger for sure. And I am not talking calorie excess either, under 1500. I do seem to be losing inches at the moment though which is quite satisfying.

I believe it is to do with the body fat ratio, until it is within acceptable limit your body doesn’t metabolise properly. So the only answer is to get rid of the fat. Sticking with it guys probably another year the way I am going. But it really isn’t a great stress I have got used to this way of life now. I have also accepted that a treat is a weekly thing not a daily thing- vital life lesson for all dieters.

Ply- that party sounds great, I would love to meet your family some day, we have chatted for so long now I feel like I know you all already. I have my daughter and ex coming for dinner tonight. I have promised them Dover Sole and thrice cooked chips with mushy peas. Never cooked any of these things before so it will be a first. The chips are Chucky ones, so you only have 6. Pudding will be fruit and yogurt. Drink will be sparkling water. It’s a hot day here so we may sit in the garden to eat. I will post a picture on Facebook tomorrow. I am wearing white shorts for the first time in years, they are knee length but it is a daring look for my tree trunk legs. High shoes,me thinks.

Everyone- thanks for the research threads information.
Smiffy- good luck with Beach Diet- wasn’t it a complete ban of alcohol on that one! Are you sure? Ha Ha.

Luckily I don’t have a sweet tooth, I tried smores- yuk but I have made some excellent soups and scones over a camp fire, not to mention the occassional hot dog and burger.

I really enjoyed Rock Choir today, some really rousing songs plus an old favourite of mine. Tears of a clown. Now I know the words it’s surprising how many I used to sing wrong in the past. There are lots of clips on utube of my recent performance at the rock choir – NEC Birmingham if you are curious. 10,000 voices on the Saturday, 8,000 on the Sunday. Kim Wilde and Chesney Hawkes were great too. Quite a feat getting that many people to sing and move together but they managed it.

Oh well must get on, starving, only had a bowl of porridge today as saving myself for dinner.
    Good luck everyone

    Friday funny

This is the true story of George Phillips of Meridian, Mississippi, who was going to bed when his wife told him that he’d left the light on in the shed. George opened the door to go turn off the light but saw there were people in the shed in the process of stealing things.

He immediately phoned the police, who asked, “Is someone in your house?” and George said, “No,” and explained the situation. Then they explained that all patrols were busy, and that he should simply lock his door and an officer would be there when available.

George said, “Okay,” hung up, counted to 30, and phoned the police again.

“Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people in my shed. Well, you don’t have to worry about them now because I’ve just shot them all.”

Then he hung up. Within five minutes three squad cars, an Armed Response unit, and an ambulance showed up. Of course, the police caught the burglars red-handed.

One of the policemen said to George, “I thought you said that you’d shot them!”

George said, “I thought you said there was nobody available!”

There was an elderly couple who in their old age noticed that they were getting a lot more forgetful, so they decided to go to the doctor. The doctor told them that they should start writing things down so they don’t forget. They went home and the old lady told her husband to get her a bowl of ice cream. “You might want to write it down,” she said. The husband said, “No, I can remember that you want a bowl of ice cream.” She then told her husband she wanted a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream. “Write it down,” she told him, and again he said, “No, no, I can remember: you want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream.” Then the old lady said she wants a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top. “Write it down,” she told her husband and again he said, “No, I got it. You want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top.” So he goes to get the ice cream and spends an unusually long time in the kitchen, over 30 minutes. He comes out to his wife and hands her a plate of eggs and bacon. The old wife stares at the plate for a moment, then looks at her husband and asks, “Where’s the toast?”

So two Irishmen are traveling to Australia. Before they leave home, one of their dads gives them both a bit of advice: “You watch them Aussie cab drivers. They’ll rob you blind. Don’t you go paying them what they ask. You haggle.” At the Sydney airport, the Irishmen catch a cab to their hotel. When they reach their destination, the cabbie says, “That’ll be twenty dollars, lads.” “Oh no you don’t! My dad warned me about you. You’ll only be getting fifteen dollars from me,” says one of the men. “And you’ll only be getting fifteen from me too,” adds the other.
Have a great weekend you losers 😉
    Peace RT

Seriously Guys, thrice cooked chips by Heston are a bloody nightmare

Rinse under a running tap for Five minutes, Boil 30 mins, cool, freeze for 1 hour, fry 5 minutes, cool, freeze, fry 7 minutes.

They were good but not worth the effort. Next time I will buy them from Waitrose re- cooked.

Jojo, would they have been worth the effort if someone else had cooked them? I ask as my OH is the chip cook in our house 🙂

How were the white shorts? Hope you wore a pinny!

No Jojo! Next time you’ll make a delicious salad instead! 😉 P

Good morning all and belated welcome to Newbie. You’re right, we have formed a great supportive team with members all over the world, thanks to Jojo’s initiative and continued attention.

Nama, your boys played well and commiserations. However, not entirely unhappy with the result as have had a soft spot for Matthew Pavlich since he was a talented kid from the western suburbs in the juniors. Please will you continue to talk to me? 😉 Definitely soup weather. I bought the ‘doings’ yesterday and OH asked to be shown how to make it. Talk about deep secrets of the universe!!! We now have about 5L of mixed veg in chicken stock cooking for today’s lunch – and many more. 🙂

    RT, thanks for jokes.

Jojo, chucky chips? 😆 Nearly as good a slip as RT’s Bugger King. I agree with Purple, make a salad next time – nowhere near as much mucking around.

Ply, ditto other comments – what a brave woman! Your son and his friends will have a memorable graduation party due to your efforts, on top of term end for you. I used to fall into a heap after the final push of marking what always seems like Everests of assignments and tests. Enjoy your summer break – well deserved.

Happy, enjoy your neighbourhood get-together. Is your mower a ride-on? If that’s the case, I can understand Mr Happy’s reluctance to stop. Much better than a push motor mower, or even a self-propelled powered variety.

After several days of feeling very second-hand, my cold is definitely on the run. Finished my TAFE marking commitments on Wednesday (all passed except for one slack sod who failed to hand in assignments, despite lots of nagging and extensions – will I never learn?). Then went to weights and despite sniffles managed PBs on leg press (109kg x5 reps – ~30kg more than I weigh!!!), lateral pulldown (45kg x8) and bench press (35kg bar x5) – halo being polished as I type. No fasting this week but at least no gain so very pleased all round.

Take care all and keep up the good work. Collectively, your blood’s worth bottling, as my Dad would have said. n xxx

    Hi Nicky,

Good to hear you are feeling better and great to hear your OH keen to learn! Mine may need to take over soup duties too, just slicing veg and managed to slice the top of another finger with mandolin! Very slow learner! Presently applying pressure and 2 finger typing with one hand…could easily donate some blood to be bottled! Of course I am still speaking to you, I have always thought Pav was pretty cute! Disappointed to lose last night of course, but had expected to be thumped anyway, so happy with my teams great effort. I really cant take to Freo’s coach tho! Well done with your weights, very impressive Arnie!

Another newcomer in the family – our latest grandson was born in Sydney yesterday. Mum and baby tired but well, and mum was 😯 allowed to stay in hospital over-night! So that’s four grandboys and one grand girl from our three children. It’s not quite as unbalanced as my brother’s grandies – his are five to one!

Definitely soup weather in this hemisphere – mine is bubbling away nicely.

Go for the salad option, Jojo, all sorts of wonderful combinations to wow the guests. Sorry to hear that dratted plateau is sticking, but as long as you know that the painkillers are responsible you know there is a solution out there – just that you are stuck in a catch-22 between pain and weight-loss.

It’s good to hear positive news about your grandson, Wiwi. Such an anxious time when there is no diagnosis, but as you say, as time goes on the worries become less. Enjoy your lovely weather and garden. You probably keep up with our news and know about the cold and floods that have been hitting parts of the country.

    Cheers, all. B

Nama, you weren’t supposed to take to blood bottling literally! Hope the bleeding has stopped by now. I have done similar things and ended up putting Bandaid after Bandaid on top of each other to stop the seeping red tide. Remember, keep the affected part raised to aid clotting 😉 (that’s a ‘coals to Newcastle’ quote of course to a retired nurse).

Barata, saw your post on FB about your new grandie – so lovely to get another addition to the clan.

    Cheers everyone. n xxx

    Good morning/evening all

Nicky – Glad to hear you are on the mend. it’s actually me having the neighbourhood get-together this evening. Yes, OH does have a ride-on mower and spent most of yesterday on it!

A good FD for me yesterday – mainly water all day then a lovely Italian chilli prawn recipe courtesy of Jamie O, with Zero rice. Weighed this morning at the end of my second week of FBD – 1.5 lbs off. Very pleased as I have now finally lost the 4 lbs which have been coming and going since Christmas.

Jojo – you know me so well! Mimi Spencer does recommend giving up alcohol completely for the 6 weeks, but also says that if you can’t give up completely, then drink “in a more controlled way”. I actually haven’t drunk most nights since starting the programme, and certainly not on fast days, but I do enjoy a glass or two with a nice meal, especially OH’s Sunday roast, so have been indulging (“in a more controlled way”, of course) at weekends.

It hasn’t been easy in this lovely warm spell we are having – sorry SH’s!), as I love nothing more than sitting in the garden with a glass of something dry, white and chilled on a sunny evening, but have substituted spicy tomato juice with ice and lemon, which I really enjoy. It looks as if we are In a real heatwave next week. 30c on Wednesday, so the chilled white will almost definitely make an appearance! I know some of you in the rest if the world are used to those temperatures, but we are certainly not!

Nama – so sorry to hear about your finger-slicing incident. Mandolins can be vicious things! But oh, so useful, especially for making decidedly non-fast day things like Dauphinoise potatoes! It’s great having an OH who can help with meal preparation.. However much one loves cooking, as I do, it’s lovely to have a rest from it occasionally. Sunday is when he takes over completely and does a roast, and it’s definitely never a fast day – his roast potatoes are to die for!

Congratulations on the new grandson Barata.

    Have a great day/evening all.

    Smiffy xx

Sorry Smiffy, obviously my attention span is too short to hold detail accurately till end of posts 😉 Hope your get-together goes well.

By Adelaide standards 30C is a lovely summer day. When we get into the high 30s-low 40s is when I wish I could have bottled some of the <10C winter temperatures.

Good morning NHers, good evening SHers. n xxx

    Good afternoon or morning everyone,
Just back from Physio who says she is positive I can sort out this muscular problem with stretches. She says I have done far too much strengthening and my muscles are actually not doing me any favours. Seriously! Too strong, too tense. She set me up a standard set of stretches which I was then asked to demonstrate and tell her where I felt the pull. I didn’t feel it on any of them. They were all weaker versions of yoga or dance stretches which I do every week. So she designed a set of Sport Persons stretches( which bloody hurt) but she assured me will do no harm. Ok so I am committing myself to follow her program for two weeks then return. She has booked me in for 10 treatments which should sort me out before my trip to NZ and Aust. Fingers crossed people(actually legs crossed) ha ha

Congrats to Barata on the new grandchild( I wonder if I will get any, my daughter seems reluctant to date let alone marry and have children). She certainly has maternal instincts, hatching baby chicks in her classroom at the moment, even takes them home at night. Bless, they are cute though.

Smiffy- I thought the total alcohol ban was a step too far. Good luck to you, you look fabulous anyway.
Fast day today and it is going well, liquids only.

I don’t cook chips usually, in fact it was the first time in three years. But I thought my family have suffered enough with my healthy lifestyle. Who really enjoys salad after a long hard day at work. I never did, give me carbs everytime. But it was a one off that they really, really enjoyed.

    Chat later, off to bowls

Hi Jojo and whoever is awake!

Great news re the physio Jojo, hopefully progress at last! We need all your moving parts in good working order for your trip Downunder!

I am feeling a tad anxious tonight after seeing the tv report of the ghastly terrorist attack in France. My son’s fiance should be landing in Paris at any moment and even though I know Grenoble is a long way from Paris, it still scares me. Talking to my son today, he was telling me how much he missed her (after 12 hrs!) and was worrying about her because he loves her so much. I explained that is what one feels every day as a parent! Maybe he finally gets it!

Jojo…hope the new stretches will do the trick. Sounds like you have a good Physio working with you.

Busy weekend around here and unfortunately, the weather is not going to cooperate. Big parade in our little town tomorrow that will probably be a wash out as pouring rain is forecast. I feel bad for all the people who put so much time and effort into making it nice. Nothing to be done, but it’s a shame anyway. Fireworks tonight should be ok as the rain comes early tomorrow morning.

3 sessions of boot camp done this week plus 2 days of run/walk. I’m tired!

    Have a good weekend all!

    Hello Everyone,
Barata- congratulations on the new grandson, what an amazing feeling.
Jo-j0- I am so glad you are getting help, I know when I had a knee difficulty, my pt helped a lot. Enjoy your fast day.

RT- I love your jokes and so does my husband. I need to remember to laugh everyday.

Lori- I would be tired too if I did three sessions of a boot camp. I have never been but I heard they are hard. Hopefully you get some rest and have a great parade.

So it will be 100 degrees f. today and smokey. I do like it better than winter though.

Remember when we were talking about gum chewing and I am an addict. Well I quit 21 days ago. I am happy to say I do not wake up craving it like I use to. Celebration time.. only a few in the world would know how an addiction of 30 years is hard to break. I am empowered what should I change next?

One more thing that I am proud of my self for. I went to my first yoga class at the age of 47. It was amazing.

Have a great day everyone and a great weekend.

    Evening all.
I got back an hour ago from a really lovely four days in Bruges. Lots of walking, lots of fun, lots of food and lots of beer. It was raining when we areived on Monday afternoon, but the weather has been fab since then, getting hotter every day. I’m tired but relaxed and looking forward to a FD tomorrow.

    Hello Everybody,

I should really make an effort to read all the posts everyday otherwise it takes too long to answer what I want to everyone of you.

The weather here in Connecticut is fantastic lately however life goes on and always something to do in the house, garden, phone calls, answer email em plus. Mornings normally is when I go to the gym or walk with a girlfriend or Sasha. I have my best energy for physical activities in the morning. For some reason I’ve been sleeping better… I don’t know if Fasting has re-setted my hormones but I feel better.

PROUD LOSER – This week I reached the goal I’ve set to myself! This morning I was at the scale without panic of fear because I knew I behaved better on FD and NonFDs. Of course I drank lot’s of water and I went up 3 times last night to go pipi 😉 but it didn’t matter at all. I went right back to sleep all times. My sleep is very light, wake up many times and get up tired but not recently. The number make me very optimistic and I told husband that it isn’t a big celebration yet. I am happy and still watching. My sister arrives Sunday and every time I travel or there’s is people around to socialize and entertain things to bad.
I have one too many glasses of wine one time this week while cooking dinner and I was so hungry. Reached for the box of crackers and I heard RT telling me not to start and all of you trying and maintaining and behave good… I stopped right there with 2 of them and hurried my dinner.
This last Fast I changed my menu from the boring previous one which was more satisfying. The one from yesterday was grilled chicken and cooked cauliflower made me hungry in bed. Still and experiment.
My husband wanted to know what was my nightmare because I was talking loud last night. I was watching a TV program called the 600lb people…I dreamed with one of them. I wanted them to start Fasting…Isn’t that something?

Welcome newbies, babies, travelers. Ply I think many people will be chocked with your new figure. RT the jokes are good and I love TedTalk. Namma that food you’ve mentioned it’s the one I like …hardy. Sarah I am not the easy type that shares or opens up but being here I am getting more relaxed. Jojo next week it’s another week.

Light and Blessing to you all.
    HCB

Sarah, congratulations on quitting your gum habit! What should you change next? You’ll have to tell us about your other vices/weaknesses if we’re going to answer that…!

Hi Amazon, welcome home! Sounds like you had a great time. You’ll have to tell us more! Are you off to Wimbledon next week? Just seen the mid week forecast. Scorchio!

HCB, great news that you’re losing weight. When you say you’re sleeping better though…think I’d perhaps rather sleep badly than dream about trying to recruit 600lb people to 5:2!

Jojo, great news that you’ve got a physio and plan of action. Has your new mattress arrived yet? Or is that going straight to your new (old?) place?

Sarah, congratulations on both the yoga and the chewing gum. You are re-creating yourself into the person you want to be. 🙂 I took up tae Kwando in my 50th year when we lived in England, but gave it up when we returned to NZ. The hardest thing I found was learning the Korean words – words in isolation with no sentence context are really difficult to memorise. I got to blue-with-red-stripe belt.

Wonderful news, HCB, with achieving your goal. I can fully understand you wanting to share the amazing results of IF, but in your dreams?? 😯 Keep sharing, it’s a great forum.

Bruges is one of our favourite places, Amazon. We went twice when we were living over your way.

    Hello Everyone,
Amazon- welcome home, I look forward to fast days too.
HCB-I dream about work everynight, I wish I didn’t. Sometimes it is ok but I need a different focus. By the way I think achieving goals is important.. congratulations. What is your next goal?
I know this might seem silly but I have been eating peanutbutter, unsweetened chocolate, and coconut oil every night. The peanutbutter is a slippery slope for me, so I think I going to take it out for the next 21 days and replace it with a healthy veg. smoothy with unsweetened chocolate in it.
Barata- tae-kwando is something I might do when I am 50, I know I need to continue learning to keep my brain active. I am focused right now on getting more balance and strength for backpacking. I have been walking the bleachers for 8 min. at least once a week and doing core exercises. I bought 3 yoga classes, so I am going to go at least once per week.
    Good night everyone.

    Hi everyone.

Welcome home Amazon, I am glad your break was fun. Lovely to get away but always lovely to come home in my opinion!

Wow Sarah! Quitting gum and starting yoga! Congratulations. I have been planning to start yoga or pilates at the gym where I swim, but keep procrastinating …. even bought a yoga mat …. maybe one day I will get there. But from a year ago, when I didn’t do anything more than housework and gardening and only a weekly walk of a few kms, I am positively overactive now! We walk 6 km 2 – 3 times a week and I swim 30+ laps 2-3 times a week, every week. I cant believe my knees are holding up so well. This isn’t much exercise compared to a lot of people, but for me its a lot. The main thing is tho, I am enjoying it. Cant see the point if its always torture, bound to end in failure!

And well done to you too HB! Sounds like you are well and truly getting on top of things. Great that you are feeling more relaxed about chatting on here. I agree it will be harder with houseguests, maybe try to plan more in advance.

My weight not doing much this week, up and down and up and down…. this WOL requires patience! I have emptied all the temptations from the cupboards now that the kids have moved out and finding myself maybe eating a bit too much fruit as snacks. Note to self: Only buy berries, melons etc that are lower sugar! I am with you Jojo, I don’t care if I don’t start maintaining til Xmas, just need to continue retraining myself!

No problem with the brain activity, Sarah. I’m working in a challenging job, and am fortunate that I can continue as long as I want, currently on four days a week but could cut this back to three in due course. No risk of redundancy, either, as we are short-staffed. 🙂

    Good morning Fast Trackers,
Scales still not moving but I have had a positive week so not disheartened.

Amazon, glad you had a good trip, sounds like fun( apart from the beer drinking. My poison in a G & T.

I went to a casino evening last night, black tie- at the bowls club. Lost all my allocated ticket set of chips quite quickly but interesting watching people play the roulette table. It was for charity so not playing for money. The highest win got a bottle of bubbly, over £500 ( on paper only). Most people that took part have never had a real casino experience before.

There was a live singer for an hour, a fellow bowler, previously a professional singer so it was a good night.

I have bowls match this afternoon and tomorrow, weather should be good for a change.

Sarah- well done on giving up gum, your teeth will thank you. Also yoga is addictive so enjoy it, I have been doing it 30 years ( with some breaks) even through my fat years, keeps you supply, strong, flexible, calm and in control. Great set of skills.

From the conversations on here I get the impression that brain function is not a problem any of us have beyond the occasional ‘senior moment’.

    Morning/evening all.
It is a beautiful hot and sunny day here and I’m pleased to see it is going to continue 😛

I was very tired last night and slept very well. Going away is fab but being back in your own bed is always so nice. I needed the rest as we walked at least 10K every day,and there are lots of cobbles everywhere which makes it a real workout. We even spent yesterday morning walking before leaving for the station at lunchtime.

On Tuesday we climbed the 400 steps of the bell tower in the main square which was a mini workout up a narrow spiral staircase. The views it afforded and being at the top when the bells started to ring made it worth every step. The feeling it gave me when I got to the top having only stopped once and not gasping for breath was priceless!

New bells have been cast in recent years and there was a video being shown to demonstrate the work done. Music is played using an enormous old drum style machine with huge brass pegs to play the notes. The tunes are changed once every two years as it is a major task to do do. It was fascinating.
We visited numerous museums, the site of an old hospital that had been there since the 12th century and remained so until fairly recently was particularly interesting for me, especially with its display of ancient and occasionally somewhat terrifying medical instruments and paintings of post mortems….eek!
There is a hotel that was built in the 1990s and when they were digging in order to lay the foundations an old wall was discovered. It turned out to be the wall of a 10th century church and monastery that was there for several centuries and added to. The site was huge and the original building was accessed by an oak bridge across a moat. Permission was given to go ahead with building the new gotel if they agreed to diplay the site and averything found by archeologists free to the public, so the basement of the hotel is a huge museum, with very large areas of the original wall, including some tombs forming the boundaries of the area. They use it as a conference centre and we were unable to visit on Thursday as there was one in progress so we returned yesterday. We had no idea how extensive it was and thought we would be there for 10 minutes rather than the 50 it took us to see everything.

We went on a canal ride which was very enjoyable as it gives a different perspective. We were very pleased to discover that once away from the main sights it was very quiet with hardly anyone around. There is a walk in the Northern part of Bruges that takes in four ancient windmills and stunning views along the canals, and we hardly saw a soul most of the time. There was also plenty of time to stop for a coffee or to sample one of the fine beers on offer, there are over 1000 brewed in Belgium so no chance of trying them all!
I tried a waffle. I’ve never eaten one before and it was much lighter and far less sweet than I expected. I had it for lunch rather than as well as! The food was excellent. There are lots of things cooked in beer, my friend had the beef and I tried rabbit with prines in beer and it was delicious. It is traditional toserve these dished with fries and salad…… The Belgians claim to have invented fries, I’m not sure if that is true but there is a frites museum 😆
There are numerous ice cream parlours, but as I had some with some dessert I decided I need to try any more of it.
There is a lot of very frest North Sea fish and seafood, the coast is only 15k away, so we went to fish restaurants on two out of four nights. I had the biggest pot of mussels I’ve ever seen one night and the other started with oysters followed by sole in a lobster sauce with prawns and mussels.
The breakfasts in the hotel were a hot and cold buffet with everything including smoked salmon and champagne. I stuck to fruit salad and yoghurt sprinkled with a spoonful of muesli for 3 out of 4 mornings, and on the last morning tried some of the meats, cheeses and breads on offer with a small helping of smoked salmon 😉
I realised that I am nowhere near free of my old eating habits and it would have been easy to fall back into eating non stop every day. One of the things that stopped me was the huge number of obese and very obese people around eating enormous amounts. Some of our fellow hotel guests ate four or five times the amount we had for breakfast and it gave me a jolt to realise that previously I would have eaten that amount and more and thought nothing of it.

The citizens of Brugge were all very nice, friendly and helpful and considering the majority of those we met spent their time dealing with tourists it was nice ro see how much they enjoyed it. Several times we were out somewhere looking at our map and one of them would stop and ask us if we needed help. It was great to come home with such positive experiences.

I am not going to weigh myself. I am fasting today which is going to be difficult as I’m hungry already, but I am determined to succeed and get back into the 4:3 habit a.s.a.p.

    Have a good day/evening everyone.

    Happy,
I am now looking forward to Wimbledon viewed from the comfort of my sofa 😛

Have you ever considered your well being level and links to sucess?

Try taking three measurements a day. One hour after you wake, then one hour after lunch and again after dinner. Basically marks out of 5 do it for one month, say July!

To get a 5 you would be really happy, life under control and completely involved in your activity(what ever that may be) doing the washing, writing, reading, not distracted by anything at all. To get a 1 you are probably really upset, possibly crying or so worried you cannot focus on any task.

I am going to do this in July because I am facing yet another big change in my life, moving out of my flat. I want to see how I cope and how much my feelings effect my fasting performance. If anyone else is interested in joining me it might be a useful exercise that we all learn from. I suggest we record privately but discuss main triggers for eating after the month has passed based on an average over period. It might also highlight how energy levels effect will power. Most of us us strong during the day and fall apart in the evening. I also think lots of socialising is a real problem when fasting. I have a feeling boredom is more of a trigger for me than stress but we will see. I certainly find packing boring. I am going to set my phone alarm to remind me to record measurement.

This is not a new experiment, I got the idea from ‘Luevens – Well Being and Involvement Scales’ observations taken in classrooms of young children. Their learning progress was directly linked to their levels of involvement in tasks and events. The objective being to find a way to interest each child and help them become absorbed in learning and therefore become more productive. Happiness was a big factor and I believe we all under estimate the effect of ‘worry’ and ‘loneliness’ on our ability to perform tasks.

So keep busy everyone, find activities that get you really involved. For me top of the list is Yoga, Swimming, Bowls, singing, Dancing, playing cards, reading, watching tennis and Gardening but then I live alone. Problem times watching TV or doing housework- far too many tea breaks to relieve the boredom. Can I live without TV? yes but only if I go to bed to read because it is the only time I get some rest time.

What works best for you, to keep you away from the fridge and food cupboards?

Great post Amazon but like you I know I haven’t beaten the holiday eating habits and am facing a three month trip in October. Therefore I am working on self analysis at present. Good luck with 4:3. I do it permanently now plus 19/5.

I have to say I am pleased with the fact that I didn’t go mad eating and drinking everything in sight.
I had three courses twice, both occasions on the nights I had fish so the main courses were lighter, but I was uncomfortably full, and it isn’t something I really want to repeat.
I’ve just noticed a couple of typos, prines 😆 prunes!

I am very hungry today which is no surprise as I’ve been eating three time a day all week but I know that if I don’t fast today I’ll regret it so I’m keeping myself busy. I’ve been out and bought milk, fruit and salad so I don’t need to go near a food shop again for a while, and I’ve got some FD dinners in the freezer.
I’m looking forward to going to the gym after a two week break. It will be nice to get back into the routine and I am determined to get back to the Pilates class.

Feeling stressed, tired or unhappy have always been an excuse for overeating as far as I’m concerned, so I am striving to be stronger and find other less harmful diversionary activities and continue to curb any greed by reminding myself that I can have it tomorrow. I know I’ll fail occasionally and I can forgive myself for that too.

Sounds like a great trip Amazon.
Interesting idea re measuring happiness Jojo 🙂
Oh Nama. You are going to have to get rid of that mandolin! I’ve hardly used mine since your first finger slicing episode. Hope it heals quickly. P

hiya all ive just started the 5/2 so really just trying to figure it all out I fasted yesterday had 427 calories but unsure on what type of foods to eat on non fast days is it ok to eat a bacon sandwitch please help any tips or advice welcome T

I decided that I’m far too clumsy to use a mandolin. I have enough accidents using a sharp knife!

Hi TAITY and welcome. The best advice is buy the book. It will tell you everything you need to know about following 5:2. This website is great for support and encouragement, but it’ll be much easier for you if you have read the book, and have it to refer to.

Thankyou very much Amazon will order the book.

    Hi TAITY and welcome:

This thread will answer most of your questions and explain how 5:2 works: https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/the-basics-for-newbies-your-questions-answered/

    Good Luck!

Passing to say hi! It’s raining here right now. Will make a chicken with wine sauce for dinner.
    Be well everybody.
    HCB

Amazon, Thanks for the detailed trip report. You’ve sold it to me, where can I sign up? Are you working on commission from the Bruges tourist board? You should be 🙂

P, perhaps Nama doesn’t need to get rid of the mandolin… She just needs an electric one. Because then it’s officially a power tool. And only men are capable of operating power tools 🙂

    Nice one H 🙂

    Hello all,

Crisp but sunny Melbourne morning, hope it lasts!

Amazon your trip sounded great, thanks for the detail, its fascinating. Also lovely to hear that the locals were friendly, that makes such a difference. The Parisian citizens were pretty impatient when I was there and it does not leave a good impression. Understandable when they are dealing with tourists all the time, but not good for future business. Fantastic re climbing the bell tower, I can relate to that! Good luck re getting back on the horse. You will do it as you are motivated and you know exactly what to do. I agree re seeing other people who are really obese is good motivation to be healthy.

Finger ok thanks Purple and Smiffy and no Happy, I wont be parting with my best friend! Its been invaluable, I use it most days and dont know how I managed without it! I was trying to save time and had about 4 stalks of celery together, which were too long to use the hand pusher thingy. Unfortunately my hand slipped down the (wet) celery, ouch, big slice of finger and fingernail too this time! I have been looking on ebay and am going to buy a butchers metal glove – seriously! There are some from China for under $10. Husband is always busy when I am cooking, I would need to make an appointment with him to get him into the kitchen, then it woud end in an argument about how veg are to be chopped! Only problem is this time its the middle finger and as its the longest, it gets in the way and I keep bashing it every time I reach for something, such a klutz! Hoping pain is a good teacher!

Jojo I hope you learn something with your new “happiness” measurement technique. Good Luck with it. I dont think I will do it, but will be interested in how you go. Personally I just love food and eating. As Amazon says, its just greed! You are right, its easy through the day when busy, but harder in the evening when less busy and tired. Just saying that makes me more determined!

Cheers, have a lovely day all x

Hi Again! I was so angry. There was this very nice civilized note after reading all your posts and probably I, by accident hit the wrong key and everything DISAPPEARED.
My day, scale, menu, weather and more.
Windowns 7 …don’t know. Just getting back to normal.
    xoxoxo

    Hi Everyone,
Barata I did not mean you need more brain activity, my mom at 69 was diagnosed with Alzheimers, I was talking about myself. I need to keep my brain working well.
Nama-You do alot of activity compared to me. I might do a long hike once a month and 20 minutes per day but that is it. Is yoga considered exercise? Oh I do teach PE for two hours a week during the school year, but thats me giving more directions than moving.

Jo-jo: I am interested in the happiness journal. How much do I need to write?
HCB: I am sorry you lost your post. Maybe tomorrow.

I had an ok day. Hubby has been home now for 10 days and will go back to work on Monday. I am use to more time to myself. It has been so hot here, we have not been able to get to the yard work. Hoping to watch a comedy tonight before bed.
    Good night all.

No problem, Sarah. I can understand your concern with your mother’s example. When I read about alternative treatments to ailments (as I did today in our equivalent of the Radio Times, about dietary options for depression – just the best weekly magazine, full of topical and worthwhile articles) I think to myself that they haven’t tried every alternative until they have tried IF. It’s future benefits are as yet almost untapped.

Beautiful day here today, all three club rugby / rugby league teams were winners (sorry, Aussies 😳 ), out in the garden putting more edging behind my orchard row (just have room for two feijos and two mandarins next to the path. So an all NZ final to the Super Rugby competition next week. 🙂 🙂

Barata, are you going to the rugby final??
congratulations on new wee grandy. The word “feijoa” gives me some regret- my favourite fruit. I hope you are surviving the atrocious NZ winter. Here a heat wave is forecast for next week. Even here at 1000metres, up to 34° is forecast.

I have finished the 5 day mimic fast and it was great. RT, your ‘ no food tastes as good as thin” was omnipresent in my mind. But the fast is doable and a very good kick-restart to fasting. I feel great after that. In fact when I was really hungry I went out to the garden and nibbled the new leaves of the microgreens and rocket. I mainly just ate salad veges. Now I will go back onto 19:5 for about 9 days and then repeat the fast mimic.
One of you mentioned that it was possible to do this twice a month, can you give me a reference? Thanks in advance!
Amazon, nice mini-break in Bruges. You’ve convinced me.
JoJo, your happiness exercise seems to make sense as you are going through quite a lot of changes at present. Like Nama, I won’t join you. I have the family here in July and won’t have time to think about this. I find that fasting makes me happy.
Our woofers are getting through the work here. The kitchen is set up and the garden fully operational. The next project is our living green wall onto a wall of the house. I do spend a lot of time cooking, but that’s ok as hey are great.
    Talk soon.
    XX Wiwi

For obese subjects or those with elevated disease risk factors, the FMD could be recommended by the physician as often as once every two weeks.

    Hi Wiwi,

The quote above is from the second link Happy posted on P.206 of this forum. It was me talking about it. Of course its the writer quoting Longo, so you would probably be safer to research it directly yourself from Longo’s writing. Very impressed that you stuck with it for 5 days. I am tempted, but not sure if I have the fortitude for it! Did you lose much over the 5 days?
