  • Ok so we are in poetic mode, I feel I should add a Limerick of my own

Fasting is our way of life
    Sugar causes us much strife
Drinking water is what we do
But causes visits to the loo
Green tea is a healthy drink
See how many you can sink

Join our thread and say your bit
Walk, swim and jump to get you fit
Love your family and your friends
Do some Yoga, watch those bends
Swim some lengths at the pool
    Don’t stay fat, don’t be a fool.

Life is good and you will see
A slimmer size you will be
All you need to do is ‘stop’
Buying junk food at the shop
    Be intelligent, controlled, a winner
Smile and eat a 500 calorie dinner.

    Good Luck friends

    Morning/evening all.

So sad to hear Wee, hugs to you both.

It’s time I got back off the doldrums wagon and hopped back on the fasting one … still feeling a little off colour due to sinus pain but that will ease as the day goes on πŸ˜€

Have to run as I’m running a little behind time today … will catch up with all you lovely people soon (hopefully tonight πŸ˜€ )

    Cheers, AO πŸ˜†

Put me in the <50% waist:height ratio as well. I thankfully have a very proportional figure. If it’s too much, it’s too much all over, but I lose all over, too.

PVE, that was just lovely. I am consistently amazed at how much we all care for each other. xox

Obviously Jojo isn’t going in the “naughty corner” Nama. Her poem has redeemed her! Good one, Jojo.
    Well Smiffy? P πŸ™‚

Don’t believe a word she says!

    Here goes:

    Jojo, Purple, little Wee
What poets you’ve turned out to be
    All helping one another fast
So being fat is In the past

What healthy things we all now eat
Yet still have room for the odd treat
For we’re all human after all
And off the wagon we can fall

But Jojo’s there to see us through
With all the members of our crew
Helping each other on the way
    To another successful fasting day

    Good night/morning all

    Smiffy x

Wee, so sorry to hear your sad news. Thinking of you and OH xx

    It’s a cyber poetry slam!!

AO I have said this before but please try it . Chew raw onions . They are great for coughs colds and sinus xx

Jojo love the poem pal . I hope you manage to get a good sleep tonight xx

    Wee xx

I am staying quiet for once. Brain is not awake enough to write a poem and height/waist – still need to lose another 4 inches to be ‘healthy’! Well done all of you!!

    β˜† Gold star Smiffy
    Next…the 5:2 Book of Poetry! πŸ™‚

No chance of sleep, wide awake, bloody caffeine in new powerful pain killers.
Laying in bed reading and writing to tire myself out.

Gosh we have such a lot of creative wordsmiths on this thread.

Smiffy and I are teasing each other like schoolgirls, it’s great fun. My poor daughter is treating us like 5 year olds. She keeps dragging me back from crossing roads and pleading with me not to use my very bad French thereby embarrassing her. I believe I was put on this earth just to fulfill this purpose.

I am of course being led astray( food wise) by Smiffy and my daughter, virtually being force fed crusty French bread and creme caramel, not to mention red wine and ice cream. It’s criminal.
Can’t wait to get home and begin fasting again( not really though, it’s great here, enjoying every minute)
Even teaching Smiffy to play cards, poor thing, she is really scraping the barrel, socialising with us. Tonight rummy and 7’s tomorrow poker and brag.

    Wee
Thinking of you and Mr Wee and your loss. Like you, we are a close family and try to be there for each other.
    Bay xx

Nama I wonder if your OH is a conservative type of male and perhaps is hard wired to be that quiet type and deep thinker and finds it difficult to express or say how or what he thinks on your amazing transformation? as you know I have 5 sons and we are a father and son of huggers back slappers and cheek kissers and no we are not a mafia family πŸ˜† I will speak of the eldest 3 here the eldest son is likely to push the kitchen table clear of dinner plates etc and gently place current girlfriend on the table at a moment’s notice it would seem πŸ˜‰ 2nd eldest complete opposite I don’t see them hug or kiss smooch canoodle hold hands at home let alone in public bloody hell and the 3rd boy has only ever had one girlfriend and he fell for her big time she was the one for him and sadly however she was also the one for quite a few others at the same time and it ended terribly that was 6 years ago he has never recovered been badly burnt and scarred emphatically tells me he will never leave home will always live with mum and dad and is a confirmed bachelor time will tell but maybe men really are from mars πŸ˜†
    RT

Thanks RT. Thoughtful comments. My husband actually is a marshmallow (tho he only shows it to family), I think he is just apprehensive, as he has seen me lose a lot of weight in the past only to regain it. Both my sons have been raised with a lot of affection, the eldest is very relaxed showing it and the youngest is quite shy – but give him a drink and he is all over you! This is improving as he grows up and becomes more comfortable in his skin. Men really are from Mars. But I love Martians! Sorry to hear your son was hurt so badly, I hope he finds the right girl one day. I am sure she is out there.

Jojo that french bread must be torture! You have my sympathy. Smiffy is a cruel woman!

Jojo – you troublemaker! GO TO SLEEP!

Both of you behave or you’ll have to be sent home!

    Tasa
Truth? My first three attempts at 600 cals failed.

For the first few months I was very interested in the scale. Just to see that it was working. But in hindsight it was making journal entries into what foods helped me get through the fast days better than others.
For me it was beans. 300 cals at noon and 300 cals at 5pm. Then going to early.
That is made intermittent fasting such a keeper for me.
I could use foods that work for me on my schedule. The eat normally the next morning.
A few months into it and the weight losses slowed, so I had gotten used to the fast days, after getting very good at them started more focus into feed days, putting healthy nutrition dense foods on the feed days.

So it’s like a series of low hurdles , picking up on info and by trial finding what works, but not stressing over what doesn’t . I know for a fact , I’m one of only a few that can thrive on 600 cals of beans. And love every bit of it. That’s the great thing about 5:2. Everyone has the flexibility to find what works for them personally . I believe most beginners do well eating much carbs the night before and eating more protein the day of the fast. But after getting used to the portion sizes. Follow the recommendations in the book.
I find them spot on for the long term.

I’ll never go back to uncounted calorie gluttony. That’s who I used to be. I forgive my past! I know now I can lose fat 1 week at a time wether 5:2 , 4:3, ADF , or CRON/CRAN .
As long as do what is doable as often as I can it adds up over time. So far I’ve transformed from 274 to 201lbs in two years. And I’ll just keep on keepin on.

    Best wishes.

If you can’ fast, have a laugh, that’s what I say.

Eating a midnight feast as I type, well what else can you do when energised at 1.42 in the morning. No rude comments please!

Oh yes, plan next weeks fasting menu, on it now, I promise.

Smiffy, you go to sleep, you didn’t have the pills. Are you late night drinking? Knew it was a mistake you taking that wine in your room.

Sorry PVE, guess we had too much sun, forgot what it looked like back home, it has really left us on a high. More tomorrow, yippee.

RT – youngster now don’t have the same urge to tie themselves down, we should be thankful, less grand children to babysit. Neither of my mid twenties kids have settled down either, it their life, their choice, let’s hope they enjoy it.
Nama- really in the naughty corner now- promise.

    Hi Sam
You talk about gluten free products. Gluten free flours are still high in calories and give an insulin spike.
The issue with breads seems to be far more related to the modern highly processed flours and the fast acting yeasts. People have developed gluten intolerance due to the fast rising of bread. When slowly rising, natural yeasts consume, or break down, much of the gluten, leaving the remaining gluten more digestible for most people. That is why I switched to making my own sourdough with organic, GMO free, stoneground, wholemeal flour. It is SO easy, keeps for ages and is a healthy addition to a good, diverse diet. Mr P, a long time gluten intolerant, eats it, in moderation, on non fast days, with pleasure. P

    Hi Jojo.

Enjoy your late night and walk like mad Tomorr. Swings and roundabouts. And no caffeine after midday.

    Cheers, Bay πŸ™‚

    Hi Samm

Love your post. One thing to say re women and fasting. Many of us find that high carb the night before makes fasting harder.

    Tasa,

I found that I needed to have an egg for breakfast with spinach on a fast day, plus coffee, then a little tuna for lunch with salad, and lean chicken or fish or meat, plus tons of greens for dinner. After I learnt to how to fast, I dropped to two meals, breakfast and dinner.

You notice no traditional carbs at all. This seemed to make the fast day easier for my body. No sugars, or grains, or fruit, no white products at all.

I am a full fat person, no low fat products. And no takeaways or processed foods.

Tasa, the first few fast days are the hardest. You need to drink two litres of water spread out through the day. And go to bed early, as Samm says. I measure the water out in the morning, and drink a glass an hour at the minimum. The water is extra to tea or coffee.

Anything worth doing, is worth a little endeavour to learn how πŸ˜‰

    All the best, Bay πŸ™‚

    I second that, Bay πŸ˜‰

    I third it Bay,

Awake again and in some serious pain, just popped two more paracamol, codeine and cadeine and know that a trip to the Doctor next week essential.

Looks like a full day rest tomorrow, taxi to the beach and back, walking definitely off the agenda. Phew I didn’t realise what the painkillers were masking today – ouch!

Ok so if it isn’t Bursitus, or bone issues what can this hip and knee pain be? It doesn’t show up on an X-ray? Any ideas? I know you lot are very well informed, I need help!
I also need sleep. This is really tough. Today we probably only walked for hour and a half- no noticeable pain really on mild pain relief. Why is it so excruciating at night?

Guess I will play patience until the medication begins to work, thank goodness I brought my hot water bottle.
Last full day here tomorrow, then home to Blighty

Sorry to hear you are still suffering Jojo. Xx

Sorry to hear you are suffering so much Jojo – shame the pain killers have caffeine, hopefully you can get some stronger ones without. I am not a doctor but from personal experience I reckon you have some form of bursitis, an inflammation of the fluid sac over one of your hip bones. Its more painful at night cos the muscles tighten up when you are resting. Its got to be an inflammatory thing as it always worsens when you overdo the walking or exercise. Tomorrow get to a shop that sells over the counter anti inflammatory drugs and get a stock of ibuprofen or the strongest you can get without a script. Naproxen or Voltaren. These are hard on your tum so you must must have food with them, but they will work better than codeine for your sort of pain. Dont do it more than once (at bedtime), but kick of with a bit extra. Eg if the dose is two tablets, take three. JUST ONCE as otherwize its dangerous. But it will kick start the anti inflammatory process. And heat pack, and rest from whatever sets you off. I know you said you had a steroid injection, but it may not have been effective without adequate rest, you gym junkie! Good luck!!!!

Also, maybe your GP needs to refer you to an orthopaedic person who might order an MRI or similar. Sometimes we live all our lives with mild hip dysplasia (imperfect sockets) which only gives symptoms with over stressing the joints. Thats why they screen newborns so carefully for clicky hips. It runs in families too. I know you say you have always been active, but you have seriously upped the exercise havent you? Pain in the middle of the night is awful you poor chicken. x

Thank you wee for reminding us, as we try to get cars, boats houses, educations, and every other thing. That we will always have what is most important to us all along. And appreciate those family and friends wether we or they have all that stuff or not.
    Keep On Keepin On!

As I read the posts tonight, I felt the warm fuzzy feeling of being apart of this wonderful forum. The poems are wonderful, I hope jojo you feel better. My husband at the age of 28 had a truss fall on his head which caused four crushed vertabra and several post tramatic strokes. Our sons were 3 and 4. He is now working..but pain is something horrible to deal with. I have one son living with us (23).. no grandchildren for awhile, and my younger son 22 is married and is going to school full time in Los Angeles..300 miles from here. Time here on earth is short, so I am sending air hugs to everyone through cyberspace.

Thanks for all your kind wishes.
I have taken ibuprofen too, not touching pain. Post injections I had six weeks rest from gym, not even swimming. Helped in first few days only. It is a very long term condition that has worsened with age. Initially diagnosed as Bursitus then spinal issue. See lots of specialists. I have walked too far this week, especially the day before yesterday, we got lost and added an hour to our outing. Felt fine today, didn’t play up until bed time. I haven’t increased exercise, in fact decreased it in terms of aerobic exercise, mostly less energetic classes apart from Ballroom fitness. May just do swimming for the next couple of months, see if it settles down. I hate taking painkillers, at home I just use an electric blanket. I do get stomach problems when taking pills. I can’t stop walking altogether as I have dogs but I can limit it.
It would be great to get a definitive diagnosis but I know there are so many causes to groin and hip pain, plus it has now spread to the knee. I am falling apart, poor old girl. But seriously there are many people who are a lot worse off than me and I appreciate how good my life and health has been in comparison to many people. I will beat this thing or learn to manage it. I still think losing another three stone will help a great deal but that will be very hard if my exercise is reduced and I have to take pills.
Fed up with playing cards now I am going to give sleep another try. Good night cyber pals.

I hope you do manage to sleep Jojo. Sounds like you have done all you can and now its a matter of learning to live with it. I only meant the anti-inflammatories as a temporary measure, I agree much better to manage without drugs if you can. The steroid injections would have had local anaesthetic in them and that was probably what helped for a few days, til it wore off. An MRI would be useful, if you can get a doc to order one. Then at least you know you’ve had the best diagnostic there is (help me here Amazon, you are the real expert with imaging!) to get a diagnosis.
The only other thing I think really helps is a good therapeutic massage, in the hands of someone who knows their stuff and doesn’t hold back. I have had one monthly ever since I had hip bursitis four years ago (exercise induced!) and it helps so much. Isnt it bloody awful getting old and creaky!
Sarah thanks for your cyber love, this forum overflows with it!

Seriously Jojo, the biggest bonus to the lower weight is the comfort my body gets. My feet used to scream at me. Let alone my knees, hips, back etc
The exercise can wait until the weight is down some more. Exercising with additional weight really stresses all your joints. You will be much more comfortable with another 3 stone off and you WILL be able to move freely. I promise. P πŸ™‚

    Purple

I agree re Fermented foods including sourdough being kinder to our digestion.

    Bay πŸ™‚

Another vote for sourdough from me! Ate it as the weekend instead of my usual ‘treat’ of fresh baked white bread. No stomach ache or bloating, and no water retention. Woke up on Monday too light to fast, that NEVER happens after a weekend normally!

Think I may reintroduce bread during the week πŸ™‚

Jojo, Re: your hip and knee. Are your legs different lengths? If so, orthotics might help?

    Hi Jojo,
I really do sympathise with your hip problem as I too have suffered several times in the past. It was extremely painful and used to wake me up, and keep me awake in the night. I originally thought it was sciatica but it was recently diagnosed as Gluteal Tendinopathy and on two occasions has been successfully treated with dry needling at the Physio. Manipulation did not work, nor did two weeks’ complete rest from exercise (I do 7 exercise classes a week, including Body Pump, Pilates and Zumba).
Google it and see what you think – a visit to a Physio who does this form of acupuncture might be an idea.
Enjoy the rest of your time in La Rochelle, you will be coming back to glorious sunny weather here in the UK.

    Morning/evening all.

What a chatty group we are! Lots of interesting posts AND poems πŸ™‚

I have one more inch to lose from my waist to have the correct ratio.

Jojo, sounds to me like a lumbar spine or sacro iliac joint issue, although it would be unusual for you not to experience any back pain at all. The difficulty is getting the correct diagnosis, so you’ll need to go back to your GP who can decide who to refer you to.

Try 10 minutes of stretching hips, back and legs before you go to bed and see if it helps. enjoy your dsy on the beach, and don’t get burnt.

It is a lovely day here, and I’m off for a long walk.

    Have a good day everyone.

Go Amazon! Top stuff! You’ll look tres sexy in your pink pants πŸ˜‰
Just organized a quick flit down to Melbourne, so, of course, catching up with my mate Nama. Can’t wait! πŸ™‚ P

    Lost my last post. Aargh!

I was trying to refer you to the myfitnesspal blog article by a dietician. It is called :

Are all Calories created equal? No surprise, they’re not in the effect they have on the body. πŸ˜‰

We lose weight better if our diet includes protein and fat (no artificial transfats)

Sorry Jojo that you’re in pain.

    Cheers, Bay πŸ™‚

I am reading all the posts, and agree wholeheartedly, Sarah, about the warmth of the posters here.

Take care, Captain Jojo, and safe landing in the land of our fathers. Get better fast, thinking of you.

    B πŸ™‚

Bay, I read that article yesterday, and found it to be a clear, yet simple enough for the layman explanation of calories and macronutrients.

It is a beautiful day here, 20Β°C which is very warm for April. I’ve just done 10000 step round Kew Gardens. Lots of spring flowers, daffodils, tulips and other bubs, magnolias in bloom along with various other trees in blossom, camellias and a few rhododendrons. It was glorious. I’ve just got time for some coffee before going to have my BP checked. That’ll be another few thousand steps πŸ™‚

FD today. When I went to buy milk yesterdsy, they had tuna canned in spring water on special, so I bought a couple of cans. Tuna salad for dinner tonight.

    Amazon
What a lovely description of the bulbs and your walk. Must go to bed now. See you all tomorrow.
    Bay πŸ™„

The gardens sound gorgeous, Amazon! We are a few weeks from all that blooming here. Spring flowers are my favorites!

PVE and Happy, never heard that about fast-rise vs. sourdough breads. I am not gluten-sensitive, but good to know!

I consider myself very fortunate to live so close to Kew Gardens and visit as often as I can. Every day there is something different to see πŸ™‚

I experimented with sourdough a year or so ago, but after an exploding starter incident, I gave up on it. I plan to try again at some stage as it is so good to eat and keeps well. I need to get my bread addiction under control first πŸ˜‰

I recently read an article similar to the one you mention Bay. It is good to know that it is OK to eat fat when trying to lose weight as it has been vilified for years without discriminating between essential fats that carry vitamins and minerals, and trans fats.

Good afternoon everyone . it is still a bit cold and cloudy in Scotland today . My knee and my back are a wee bit sore today . I was trying on so many clothes the other day to git rid of all the big ones . trousers are too short to give to anyone as my wee legs are too wee lol . ( you know what I mean) .I think all the trying them on has been too much al at once . Since I have lost the weight ( now almost 6 stone ) since just before Mam died but almost 4 on 5.2 . the difference in my RA is unbelievable . I am just wondering if the stress of yesterday and the worry about OH as he keeps so much into himself) i think it would do him the world of good to have a good cry .
Jojo could you have arthritis pal?. I am sorry you are having so much pain but pleased you are all having so much fun .

I am trying to have a lazy day today as we have dad tomorrow and my birthday on Thursday then we are going for a meal with Ross and our youngest granddaughter ( aged 20) on friday .

I love this forum and I look forward to reading the posts every day .
This is the very first poem I wrote just after Ross was born with CP . he is now in his own home and does everything for himself . he cooks cleans irons does it all yet we were told he wasn’t going to live . we are so proud of him xx

    ROSS MY SON

It seems like a very long time ago
I’ll tell you this story just so you’ll know
I was almost 38 you see
When something fantastic happened to me
    I had another little boy
His dad and I we jumped for joy
There was no crying I was worried
Around the ward the nurses hurried
There must be a problem time slowly passed
I held my breath too scared to ask
They put him in an incubator
We got to see him much much later
We sat beside him many days
we sat and looked and we just prayed
our prayers were answered I’m glad to say
We’ve watched him growing day by day
He’s 15 now nice in every way
He still has problems Oh! Yes he does
But he still means the world to us

he will be 35 next week…..sorry feeling a bit mushy today with what has happened xx

    Hi Wee,

This is the thread for mushiness, if that what mood you are in. What a lovely poem about Ross, he must be made of steel, just like his wee mam! It must be so hard for Mr Wee, with his brother being so far away. I have a friend who just made a dash back to Ireland to be with her mother whilst she died. It was so hard for her as she has two young sons here. Fortunately her husband excelled when he was needed. I am sure your husband is grateful for you just being there.

Amazon you are lucky to be so close to the Kew Gardens. They must be magnificent at present, your descriptions are lovely. I can smell the crisp air.

Its 10.30pm here and I am still in the kitchen. Trying to get organized! Lots on already this week, then a lovely surprise that Purple is making a quick trip to Melbourne and has managed to squeeze in a breakfast catch up on Thursday with moi! She has timed it perfectly (typical) as I have so much on already. How exciting to meet a fellow fastracker in person. Also lunch with friends tomorrow, dinner guests at home Thursday, then Friday I am running away to Jamieson for a “girls weekend” for 3 days. I need to leave lots of precooked meals for my husband, he can barely boil an egg.. probably guilt on my part too. Thank god for fasting!! Fortunately the friends I am lunching with tomorrow are used to me just ordering green tea. Next week will be a recovery week, nothing planned but swimming and gardening!

Jojo I have heard good reports re dry needling too, some say it gives great results. And I agree with Purple re getting the rest of your weight off for your joints benefit. It will still happen with less exercise. But I guess you really need a diagnosis first. I hope your current bout of pain has settled.

    Cheers all x

Nama, I’m sure that you and P will have a great time when you meet up! I am going to have to consider my route and time spent where very carefully when planning my next trip to Australia as I want to meet all of you.
I’ve not been to Melbourne and it is at the top of my list. I also want to see how Sydney has changed since 1988!
My Adelaide friend is my main reason for travelling, so I’ll definitely be going there, and out to their farm in the Clare valley.
I am already saving as I know it is going to be a long trip. I have to find time to see my other friend in Perth or she’ll never forgive me πŸ˜†

I am always busy, can’t believe it is 2 & 1/2 years since I retired and like many, don’t know how I found time to go to work. Reading your plans for the week ahead, I guess you feel the same!

That will be brilliant if you get to Melbourne Amazon! We could have a Fastrackers Convention at Jamieson, its half way between Sydney and Adelaide (well, close)! And Bay could just pop across from Canberra. Pity none of us work, we could claim it on our tax!! I really need to get to bed, I wont wake up tomorrow otherwize x

Apologies to those non-retired folks on here – your turn will come! And you have youth on your side!

I’ll definitely get there, it is just a question of when!
