  • hi,

let’s say you do 1 day of fasting:
    300kcal breakfast
    12h o fasting
    300kcal dinner

my question: why the calorie limit on dinner? why not eat whatever?

    thanks.

Weight loss is achieved by creating a calorie deficit so you need to consume less calories than your body requires in order to burn fat.

Also, the evening meal is still within the fasting period of 36 hours – say 7 pm Sunday to 7 am Tuesday.

    Thank You both.

So my goal is to change my physiology to ‘clean/repair mode’, but not to loose almost any weight.

@barata: I thought that I only need to fast for 12hrs to get benefits; and I see the FAQ also says 36, but with no explanation why. Also, if 1 fast day is 36hrs, then that would mean the nonconsecutive 5:2 approach is 72hrs per week but the consecutive is only 60hrs because of 1 night’s overlap.

And how does one calculate Alternate Day Fasting hours then?

You’re right: 2 separate fast days equates to 72 per week and 2 consecutive fast days is 60.
As for ADF, which I’m on, each fast for me is 42 hours because I don’t have breakfast. For ‘regular’ eaters it would still be 36 hours, every other day. Also, I find it easier to water fast than to mess around trying to stick to 600 calories on fast days.

How you will get the benefits of fasting without losing any weight is beyond my knowledge. You would, presumably, have to eat slightly over your caloric requirements on feed days.

    Mike,

It’s an interesting question, how to fast for health benefits without losing weight.

However. I’m afraid I don’t see that a 12 hour fast, followed by a large meal, would be of much benefit. Most of us already do something approaching a 12 hour fast in every 24 period anyway (overnight!). And, depending on what you ate last, your body may not have utilised it’s glycogen stores and started repairing before you begin eating again.

You would be better skipping the 300 cal breakfast and making it 24 hours food-free.

However, if you really want to maximize fasting benefits you probably need to stretch out the fast to perhaps a 3 day water fast, not every week but perhaps a few times a year.

Check out the fasting mimicking diet too, it’s five days but with some calories so a bit easier to stick to for some.

With longer fasting it’s inevitable that you will lose some weight, but you can eat up again between times!
