  • Raven – Well done on your great and, hopefully, rewarding work in the garden and you will certainly benefit from it over time. If you don’t feel like fasting for physical or emotional reasons, then don’t. This wol is flexible and adaptable and as I’ve said before; we adapt it to our needs, not the other way around. With regard to your family situation, I think you should be very proud of the way you have become a real and loving mother to your step-children and they are lucky to have you. I hope your son finds someone special soon. I am in awe of the exercise you are doing too – I have toyed with doing the Fast exercise and strength programme, but can’t quite summon up the will to do so. Best wishes for a better end to your week.

Raven, it is not where you come from that matters, it is where you go and you have gone far despite the challenges. And I love the sound of what you have done garden wise.
    Congratulations!

Oh Raven! Tough times for you and your son. πŸ™
He will move on, and ugly as it sounds, it’s better to move on from a relationship that’s going nowhere, changing two lovely people and leaving them angry and depressed. May they both find peace in their new paths.
Yes, families are a mixed bag at times, but the rich tapestry makes life what it is meant for πŸ™‚

So, wow! Lots of posts this morning. And new friends. So, first, a welcome to new ‘faces’ and a welcome back to ‘old’ ones.

I survived my Monday FD. Part of what kept me going was your support. I have no idea how to thank you. That I even asked for help is because of all of you! So, yes, as inadequate as the words sound – Thank you.

I’m losing about a pound a week. Although I wish it were more, it’s better than gaining a pound a week! So, if you’re just starting, try not to think of this as a diet, but a way of dealing with food (and life) long term. I know we all set weight loss goals complete with a time table. My timetable flew out the window weeks ago. No miracles here. (well, you guys are miracles, each and every one!) Still, I’m losing. Think turtle, not hare.

So, stay the course if you’re just starting. I exercise on fast days. I haven’t found it to be any more difficult than exercise on other days and it’s distracting, too.

CG, you’ve done extremely well. I mean, come on! The dentist? It’s traumatic to have a piece of yourself removed. Warm, comforting drinks were definitely in order. You’ve got it right forgiving yourself.

I loved waking up today to so many newsy posts. I have no clue how to give individual responses (fit, you are a hard act to follow) and not write a dissertation. That said, I’ll say to everyone, enjoy your day, afternoon, evening.

    ta ta for now,
    lacie

Good morning team, Up, your doing so well congratulations, you are mixing social activity with 5:2 and coming out in front πŸ™‚
Andrew, good on you my friend…I hope you and Helen rejuvinate and get the well deserved rest, the body gets low on amunity when sick so some time in the sun and a mentle revamp will really set you back on the right path πŸ™‚
Raven, thank you for sharing your story with us, you have had a very hard path to walk but what a lovely person came out at the end. We are products of our past which gives us our goals for the future, you are a credit to yourself. Even if you didn’t fast Raven the work you have been doing in your garden would have been a very healthy way of burning cals so you still come out ahead. You’ll find, like I do, a garden is a wonderful place to lose yourself, your thoughts literally clear, you come inside fresh and alive, time does not exist when in a haven like that, and it is never a chore, it’s a pleasure being part of nature πŸ™‚
Lacie, well done, we are here for each other, we all get the difficult times and because we are like minded at AUSSIE DETERMINATION it’s the tteam effort that gets us all to our goals.
There are times team when just one fast can feel like absolut deprivation instead of the easy day it usually is, if your mind set is off, do your fast on another day, 5:2 IS a way of life, there is no gun at our head, if tomorrow suits you better than today, swap….there is no harm done. Off days are human nature as are days when you feel you could take on the world πŸ™‚ so be kind to yourself, don’t sweat the small stuff, if you fall down six times get up seven, YOU CAN DO IT you are proof of your resolve, it is flexible, so have a lovely day team, enjoy whatever you do and hold your head high, be proud of yourself, see the good in yourself as other do πŸ™‚ ..CG xxxxxx

Fit, have a lovely evening, hope your head is now clear, but so worth the suffering I bet πŸ™‚ love a nice cocktail….or three πŸ˜‰ xxxxxx, at least you know you will get better as the day goes on too xx

Aw thanks CG – the head wasn’t too bad and the walk in the fresh air did me a power of good, also the dog was delighted!! The cocktail was delish….as was the wine that preceded it!! πŸ˜‰
Lacie – so glad you had a successful FD and losing a pound a week is terrific – ‘slow and steady wins the race!’

    Good Morning Gang
Raven, your garden sounds very promising. You have done the hard work, just wait to reap the benefits now. And Raven, I would like to thank you for sharing your life story with us. I am sure that the tough times in your life have actually carved a beautiful you. Totally agree with Lotus, it’s so much better to walk out of the relationship that is going nowhere. Wishing the best for your son on his new turn in life.

Fit, don’t feel pressurized to respond to each n everyone of us individually. We are growing in numbers here and we all understand. (I still love reading your posts regardless). πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

CG, Ouch is what came to my mind when you mentioned about the tooth taken out. 850 cals is a very low cal day. Your gum needed the warmth and you have done well. There is always a next fast day around the corner. Hope you are feeling better now.

Lacie, you have done soooooo well, very proud of your efforts!!! We only gain (or rather lose) something when we give it our best shot. You are doing the best you can, so the weight loss is bound to happen. Congratulations again for getting through the fast day yesterday.

And Thanks everyone for your reassurance re Red Boots. I got many compliments at work too and a very happy and proud 4 year old is my reward for wearing them. Can’t beat that, eh?

GG, your “fisherman’s friend” are soothing my throat well. Thanks for the suggestion. You are such a kind soul (and the best Mum!!)

I am not fasting today as I am sick like a pig. My throat is killing me and my voice is veryyyy husky today. Still at work as I need to finish some work before I go to short vacation to Gold coast on Thursday (Not long to go now)
Plan is to eat low cal today and fast Wednesday again as I won’t be fasting for rest of the week, when I am away. Also, the food that comes with holidays require me to eat sensibly for two more days.

I was able to finish yesterday’s fast at 480 cals and will be fasting again tomorrow. Its easier with my sore throat as I can’t eat much anyways and even the thought of food is scaring me right now.

I better get back to work now, catch ya all later in the day…..FB

FB, look after yourself my love, the cold weather is testing us all it has hit with a vengeance as if it checked the calendar and decided it’s winter….full on!

Just a WARNING team, I received an email today form someone I don’t know enquiring about a Bpay payment I sent him and wanted to know what it was for??? I phoned my bank as bells and whistles went off in my head, it gave an http://www……address to log into to check the payment…NEVER GO INTO THE ADDRESS….IT IS A SCAM…I forwarded it to my bank as spoof…..these mungrels are out there, still trying to rip off the unsuspecting individuals oh, it was dated 10 Jan 2023? Go figure πŸ™
Have a safe day team xxxxx

    Good morning all

Lacie, well done for hanging in there. I wish I could take my own advice as was starving all afternoon. I only filled up on corn thins tho and an extra apple. I have no idea how many cals over 500 I was. I can always do a mini fast today with only chicken and salad for lunch.

CG, there is nothing worse than a toothache and going to the dentist, I like you have bad memories from childhood. At least you are all better now.

FB, get well soon, and red boots are the BOMB!!

Fit, thank you, she seems to be settled in but her land line still not working – Telstra says it is connected so must be the connection inside.

Have a great day everyone, I cannot keep up on replying to all the posts either but I love reading everyones. Lots and Lots of great advice from everyone.

    xx

Hi everyone, well i survived my first fast day and it wasn’t as bad as i thought it might be. I have been busy looking up low cal soup recipes to keep me full on those days and I am actually looking forward to Thursday. next week I will attempt to incorporate some exercise as well but I am going to focus on food first as that is the one that is easier to control.

I wondered if anyone pairs this method with anything else? Ie does anyone take duromine on the fast days to control appetite, use optifast on those days etc? I am not looking for a quick fix but really want to maximize my efforts on those fast days and just wondered what you were all doing to assist in your success.

Thanks to everyone for making me feel welcome in this already established group πŸ™‚

Hi all. Oh Rqven you poor thing. You have had it tough and now seeing your son having to endure it too must be so difficult. It seems as though you are there for everyone else’s emotional baggage. Do look after yourself. Our son is divorced. He has a very difficult time with his ex wife. She has never seemed to get over it and makes life hell for him despite the fact that she is remarried. My two grandchildren at stuck with this and I could shake her till her teeth rattle. Despite all this disharmony they still seem to be emotionally OK. ours son’s new partner is a lovely, intelligent woman. She is great with the kids. Hopefully your son will find someone similar.
CG and others I guess you have read Michale’s email where he talks about plateaus and being good for us. How interesting the physiology of the human body is. CG I hope your poor mouth is feeling better. Thanks to re puppies and their mothers. Yes he does need to learn who the pack leader is. My trouble is a very short fuse. I loose my temper very quickly. At my age I should be more in control. It’s hard to change one’s personality though.
Another FD behind us. It’s gale force winds here once again so a nice plate of spicy soup is for lunch. Also homemade bread. I know I should cut it out but am prepared for slower weight loss and not deprive myself of foods I enjoy. I’m not into high calorie refined carbs so a little bit of what you fancy is my motto. Enjoy your day team and congratulate yourselves on another FD done and dusted.

Hi Deb, you’ll find in due course, that you are eating smaller meals and don’t get hungry on fast days at all. The mid arvo gurgles can be controlled with a hard boiled egg or some instant miso soup, sold at most supermarkets, Asian section, or just a milky coffee (which is what I have) so suppressants aren’t really needed. There is no rule against the diet drinks, even the ones in the tins at the Supermarket, but fresh food is always better, even a mandarine πŸ™‚ If you get a small dinner plate (op shops have them in odd dinner sets) so your meals are smaller but “look” normal on the plate, you’ be surprised how little it takes to fill you.
Lacie, glad you hung in there, it’s been and gone now and YOU DID IT πŸ™‚ some fast days are difficult, we all have them, but try to remember the pride you feel when you get into bed at the end of a fast day and know you did it. It you’re really hungry on fast nights, a lot of drinking chocolates are very low cal now,(between 30-40cals) check them out, and perfect for supper fast nights, taste of chockie and enough to finish the day to feel satisfied πŸ™‚ …also strawberry flavours too. There are “so many tricks of the trade” with 5:2 to remain satisfied but low cal…home made veggie soup is perfect, pumpkin, mushroom or Caulieflower, or mixed veg, add some tofu or chicken for a hearty meal πŸ™‚ ….you learn as you go along to be adventurous with your cooking too. A lot of favorites can be adapted with a bit of thought. Enjoy this journey team, it’s not as daunting as first thought and certainly doesn’t deprive you of anything πŸ™‚ xx
Just a tip for our newbies, slendier noodles are 8-10 cals and can be added to soups or most meals for bulk, use as normal pasta dishes too, have a happy day team, relax, don’t sweat the small stuff xxxx
By the way, my mouth feels good, so fasting today on mainly soup then stirfry for dinner CG xx

Hi Team and welcome Deb. Missed posting yesterday…not a good day. But hey did a FD with no problems so I’m pretty proud of not letting my emotions get in the way.
By the way CG I looked for slendier noodles but couldn’t find. where do you all buy them? So glad your teeth have settled & you’ll be able to enjoy some good tucker for dinner.
Doggy I’m so with you on enjoying a bit of the foods that you love. I so look forward to some bread or rice or similar on NFD’s. I have quite small portions as compared to before. One of my challenges is to get into a starter and making sourdough. Coming up soon. I think having foods like that is the main reason why I can continue with 5:2 without feeling deprived, and yes content if weight loss is a bit slower.

Gotta run have a great day all and enjoy some of those foods you love…in small portions…or nibbles! suejen

I have just started the 5:2 plan. I am 58. I have put on 10kg in the last 12 months and need to get it off. It is all on my belly. I found Saturday (my first fast day) very easy but today is harder but I am at home studying whereas was working on Saturday (a nurse). I do around 8-10km a shift at work but that doesn’t do much.
I have also been drinking to much red wine over the past 12 months.
This is therefore, day 4 of the 5:2 plan, 2nd fast and so far no alcohol.
I use to fast one day a week when I was in my 20s but just stopped somewhere along the line.
Last night I stopped after a light dinner at 6.00p.m. and have had only tea and coffee and just had a 200 calorie soup for lunch. So I can look forward to dinner tonight at 6.30p.m.
Am I doing it right? I find it easier to have part of the 24 hour fast during the night.
I saw the program on TV last year and it sat in the back of my mind. Recent relationship difficulties, health problems and realising I have been drinking too much have given me a jolt.
I have lost 0.75kg since Saturday but realise it is probably fluid at this stage.

Hi browny, and welcome to AUSSIE DETERMINATION, we usually fast Mon and Thurs and have weigh in on Fridays to share our joys and wows but to keep us honest with ourself. There is a tracking available on this page which is helpful because it’s not always your scales that tell how you are going but your tape measure too. Your doing really well the way you are going and your loss is great. Most of us still have our wine other than fasting days and nothing really is off limit on non fast days but portion control is the key. Work out your TDEE in the How It Works section at the top and stay with in your limits or under…we will help you every step of your journey, we are a great bunch of people and pretty much no topic is off limits with us and we love a laugh. Ask what ever question you have and one or more of the team will answer you, good luck…CG xx

Hi all! progress report (from the back of beyond) Can’t read posts at this point and not sure this will work, but hope all you losers are still going downhill! Wheeee! Dunno about the lard bu5t I’m definitely in decline! Got half my hair platt chopped off, so I lost at least half a kilo! (every bit counts, mates!) have been feeling quite light headed since( and less tangled by that wind in my hair CG!) I’ve been up hill and down dale and blown a few cobwebs to the curb. Presently meandering West in a crooked northerly pattern the should end up on(or connect to) the inland gulf road, and from there I’ll decide if it’s time to head for the east coast and wander down the tableland ranges to home again. Amazing where one can get internet reception these days. So took this opportunity. Have tried to post some photo links and poetic progress report of my mother’s day – and the cure! Definitely not fasting! But lost a hell of a lot of weight off my rain cloud! cheers! The gypsy.

    Herewith, the: BLUE MINGELA MOON!……….

Gone, done for…. The β€œpubs” have hit the dust
    The freedom of swaggies,
old dreams now gone to rust

Now its resorts and reserves, NO CAMPIN’ on the grass
    No barflies on verandahs,
    now its cocktales under glass

For a sad old roamin’ rhymer, there’s no copy for the pen
But once in a blue moon
    I find pure gold agen!

Born a bushman’s daughter, I mourn the lost delights
When dad, he tuned the fiddle
and bush folk howled the nights

A blue moon on the rise, I sat grievin’ for the fun
Then I loaded up old Gypsy
    and took the western run

Compared to childhood travel, my motor bike seemed tame
    Not Grampa’s bullock dray,
but the crows still looked the same

Aark! A blue moon risin’ seeped magic to my bones
    Gypsy howled for freedom!
    A pox on city phones!

My mob was on the Fletcher, our aim was headin’ straight
But a wafting on the wind
Whispered β€œtake a left here, mate”
Was that corn beef? And cabbage? And beer! All golden yeller
    I checked out the signpost
    The legend said Mingela!

Gypsy took the turn off, I swear she knew the way
    Like that old blue dog
    From my youth of yesterday

And there it was a gleamin’ like a diamond in the dust
    A tin roofed pub verandah
    Grandly sagging through the rust

Home sweet! My pen began to itch
    On a blue Mingela moon
    I truly struck it rich

Harleys! And horses! The devils’ wildest crew
    And the heavenly aroma
    Of bulldust, yarns and stew!

They were hangin’ out of winders and clingin’ to the rails
    The bikers mean in leathers
And the ringers tough as nails

Bonhomme unheard of in breeds of chalk and cheese
    A crow and cockatoo
Were even cackling in the trees

β€œMad buggers” I muttered, to my great unholy glee
    This publican was crazy
But the rest I had to see

The walls were sagging crooked and the ceiling had a droop
    β€˜neath a sign that said β€œFOR SALE”
there were pumpkins on the stoop

Fifty years or so of ageing marked the loony wall dΓ©cor
Above the bar, bedecked in sun shades
    Hung a black ferocious boar

The dunny down the back was a classic of the times
    When β€œthunder box” met β€œseptic”
    Isolated for its crimes!

To this historical hysteric clung the trellis for the roses
That were planted in the past
    To protect the patrons’ noses

Poetically I wondered if I’d died and gone to heaven
A blue moon in the daylight?
    It was barely gone eleven

Serene, mongrel country echoed yahoos from the pub
    Lunch! It dawned upon me
They were all here for the grub!

T’was simple female logic, mine hostess grinned β€œYou see,
    I don’t feed β€˜em if they fight
Have a drink, the tucker’s free!”

Five stars! Bloody perfect! I figgered, what the heck?
If the mob got out of hand
There was nothin’ left to wreck!

So to Ivan and Moanna, bush publican’s true blue
May the blue moon o’er Mingela
Ever shine its light on you!

     photo My life 098.jpg

How very poetically you describe the wandering Aussie life, Gypsy! We are privileged that we get to hear this from you, visit these places through your poems and photos.

Gypsy thank you for calling in to share your wonderful journey. The poet in you paints a glorious picture. The dunny rang a bell, as a kid I was sent to my Mums brothers family in Cleveland, (Qld for the Xmas holidays, they had 4 kids and I loved being part of the big family, bear feet, horse riding, you know the drill just ran wild) very out back country in those days, a highlight for me was getting up to see the dunny man πŸ™‚ a real joy for a city kid! Stay safe Gyps, the “bad buggars” would be safe, the unwritten law of bikers and travellers alike assures that, and lets face it, out there, they are all true blues….no one nicer or more down to earth.
Stay in touch, just lovin your poems, wonder how your leprechaun is managing? πŸ™‚ you’ll be riding off a heap of cals so wouldn’t be too worried about fasting, take care dear friend, let the wind blow through your hair, be it short, and come back to us refreshed…CG xxxx

Funny, I was just thinking Gypsy, you can get internet way out bush where you are, I can’t get mobile service 18k out of a major country town…Bl###y Telstra! Xxxxx

i think my body is having withdrawals from sugar as I have had headaches the last two days…..i have been overdoing the junk since easter and 2 days with only good nutritious food is having a purging effect. Hopefully I will feel that burst of energy that everyone talks about with clean eating very soon….in the mean time I am just trying to have lots of fluid and take it easy …

Deb, you may be needing salt, if you are drinking so much water, you’re flushing your system, even magnesium, I found it a natural wonder, thanks to Doggy…xxxx

Hi All! Hope you are all well and in fighting form (against the flab, of course!)
Thanks, FB – I don’t feel under pressure but just hope I don’t miss anyone out when there are several posts to respond to; if I do, please know that it was unintentional xx Your little boy must be so thrilled to see you wearing the red boots…woohooo!!
CG – thanks for the warning, there are alot of these scams worldwide, my OH nearly got caught a few months back by a caller pretending to be from our internet supplier who supposedly wanted to help us access better service (we are always having problems with the coverage here). Thankfully, Oh smelt a rat and ended the call before giving away any sensitive information.
Doit – I sympathize about hunger pangs on fast days; it still happens to me from time to time and I can end up between 500 and 600 cals because I just have to nibble on something e.g. apple or nuts to keep the monster at bay. But, I’m still way better than before 5:2 and keep to healthy snacks with little damage done.
Debs – I agree with CG that changing taste buds and eating habits will probably be better in the long run than taking supplements and is more natural and sustainable over time. For you and other newbies, there are lots of great recipes on the Aussie Determination Recipe thread which you can search for above. Good luck!
Doggy – take care in all that wild weather; maybe it’s affecting your mood so try to relax and do something calming and destressing…some nice music or a good book usually help me chill out.
SJ – sorry you’ve been having a tough time lately. Well done on successful FD even when feeling the blues, not easy. Hope you feel better soon. Be kind to yourself.
Welcome, Browny – not sure about how you’re doing the fasting; are you consuming 200 cals in 24 hours? If so, then you are well under the 500 allowed for FD (fast day). On your other days, you need to have less than your TDEE and you will definitely lose. Best of luck!
Oh Gypsy – you are a gem. You have really found your soul and your muse on this trip. What a wonderful poem – you have a real gift. Best of luck on your travels and I hope you will have filled up your heart, spirit and mind with precious memories, friendships and experiences throughout your journey which will sustain and enrich your life when you finally decide to call a halt to your wanderings! BTW, you look great in the photo and I’m sure you feel much freer with your shorter hair. Go Gypsy! πŸ™‚
Off out for lunch with two pals from my working days to catch up on all the gossip…it’s a hard life! πŸ˜‰

Good morning team! Having a fast day today, again vege soup and HB egg for lunch and grilled chicken salad for dinner.
Have a great day (and evening for Fit, Raven, Uptight!)

Thanks, Lotus, heading towards dinner time on a fast day for me. I am having lean pork fillet, mashed butternut and peas. Just not a lot. First time I have had peas on a fast day. Walking on the wild side tonight! πŸ˜‰

Good morning team, it’s 6 degrees at the moment with an expected top of 13! I seem to ge giving weather reports most mornings but don’t remember a change like this so quickly for many years. Flooding rains over night, which kept waking me, at least my tank is full…over flowing actually πŸ™‚ I bet your copping it too Doggy, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we get snow this year. It does make it difficult when trying to fast. Ones first thought is warm filling food for fuel. BUT with 5:2 we can have it, but with portion control! I love homemade soup in this weather but with a toasted sandwich in the sandwhich maker. Just a hint, instead of using butter on the outside of your sandwich, use a quick spray of olive oil…so much less cals and very tasty πŸ™‚
Stay well team, keep warm, roads will be bad, and of course flu season is upon us so bring out the new winter wardrobe and dress warm πŸ™‚ (mother hen speaking now πŸ™‚ )
It just seems in the last 10 days our temps have dropped by 10 degrees through the day and we don’t get much of a chance to acclimatise.
Good on you Lotus, doing another fast, I fasted yesterday due to my blow out Monday and will again tomorrow, Upt you dinner sounds yummo πŸ™‚
So have a lovely day team, be kind to yourself, plan for tomorrows fast, and remember how important YOU are .CG xxxxxxx

    Good Morning Gang
Fast day for me as well today. You are my buddy Lotus. Nothing planned so far as I am not in a right state of mind. Actually, I feel rebellious at the moment. I feel like Arrrghhhhhhhhhh!!!. Sorry for the early morning rant, but I have to do this. So, I weighed 70.3 kilos last week Friday. I fasted Monday and it was a very good fast and ended at 480 cals. Tuesday was NFD, still no carbs as I planned to do that to move the weight. Ended yesterday at 1300 cals again, again below my TDEE. Stepped on scales today and I am 71.4 kilos. Noooooooooooo, why a gain of a kilo despite of being so disciplined with food choices over two weeks.
I am not doubting 5:2, I have lost 15 kilos (actually 14 now) with 5:2 and I know it works. But I am far far away from my goal weight yet. Still not in healthy BMI. I understand that I have plateaued, but why a gain? I really can’t understand what is happening with my body………. OK Rant over πŸ™

Gypsy, OMG, you are living it up Girl!!! Yet another amazing poem! Thanks for posting!

Upt, I had squashed pumpkin for yesterday as well.
Actually bed of squashed butternut, topped with some Zucchini noodles, then some chopped capsicum, cucumber, again topped with little bit of baked beans, salsa and finished with a tbsp of low fat sour cream. All up came to 385 cals.
This was my dinner for Non fast day. Very satisfying and filling. Only carbs were baked beans. So, your wild side on fast day sounds very groovy to me πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ Enjoy!!!

Thanks Fit, for yet another wonderful post. Enjoy your lunch. Always good to meet old friends!

Good morning guys….I’m off to bed soon!
Lotus, Up – your FD meals sound great; healthy and low-cal. Well done!
CG – long spells of bad weather sure can affect our moods and ability to stay away from temptation. We’ve had a really long winter, from Dec to April the temp hardly got above 5 degrees. Then we had some lovely days and thought spring had finally come but now we have wind and rain nearly every day with max of 10 degrees most of the time. We’re expecting ground frost tonight!! Re toasted sandwiches; do you have toasted sandwich bags over there? You make your sandwich as usual, put it in the special bag and then pop the whole thing in the toaster. It’s really quick and easy and no cleaning needed afterwards…you just rinse out the bag and you can use it over and over again. No need to put butter or oil in the sandwich if you don’t want to. Best invention ever!
Hey FB – so sorry things are not going your way at the moment, but please hang in there. I can’t think why you’re not seeing results at the moment; maybe your body is making some other adjustments internally? I know I went through a yo-yo period too for a few weeks so I got stricter with my cals and carbs on NFDs and things finally got moving again.

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the recipe thread – it looks great and thank for the tip on salt. I do have low blood pressure so am on of those people encouraged to have salt and I think i haven’t been having enough. I am ensuring I do this today.

It is great reading about everyone’s experiences and sharing of ideas. I hope everyone has a great day!

Ps – proud of myself this morning. Everyone at work is having fruit custard flan for morning tea. I had a cup of low fat soup to fill the whole in my tummy and didn’t feel like i was missing out on anything….

Hey FB, hang in there. Could be all sorts of things. Lots of salt will make you hold water weight. Maybe more carbs than usual, again water weight. Hormones? Muscle? You may soon move to a larger than usual loss.

Hi team. Welcome Browny. I see you are also a nurse. There are quite a few of us on this thread. Don’t worry about your tummy. I’d say nearly all overweight folk store that extra flab around the girth. A lot of it surrounds our abdominal organs too. That’s why this diet is so good as we loose that visceral fat as well that is a major health issue. Read up all you can and we will help you along the way. Remember losing lots of weight in a short amount of time is a fad diet trap. This is not like that. Loosing weight slowly is a healthier way to go and more sustainable. We all realise that this is now our way of life and even when I reach my goal weight ( whenever that may be) I intend to carry on with this way of eating. I may change to one day a week fast but that’s all in the future.
CG re Telatra and the mobile phones. Some years ago we went on a Safari in Africa. When in Zambia in the middle or woop woop we passed an enormous satellite dish. We were told that was for the mobile phone service for the whole of Zambia. AND that’s a third world county. Whatever happened to the National Broadband Rollout? We are very lucky as our small community was one of the first areas in Australia to get it. Don’t know why. Maybe some political clout from ??? Or am I just a cynic. Oh yes defiantly.
XX Doggy. – will make some Miso soup for FD tomorrow.

Hi Doggy, we have sent so many petitions in only to be told because of the landscape (hills) and cost to put up a tower isn’t worth it? Yet, the money they get off us 200-250 people as its ONLY telstra in our area, would be missed if we could go elsewhere!
FB I’m still stabilised on 75.5k and have been for weeks, it seems every 5 k lost starts another plateau? Remember I was stuck on 80 k for months. You look fantastic, you feel good and you are well, accept what is happening inside your body and remember how far you have come. I think our bodies hang onto stored fat for some time making sure it will get fuel regularly so it can then let some go! I’m happy where I am, I feel the best I have in years, I’d love to drop another 5k but in no rush at all. My food has changed with the weather, so that’s something else the body needs to get used to and maybe the colder weather stops the body wanting to part with the warmth of fat? πŸ™ who knows, doesn’t matter….what a wonderful WOL and WOE and so so so very doable and easy. Don’t be hard on yourself as we get closer to our goal this will slow for us all really which stands to reason, we can’t just keep losing weight, we’d be anorexic πŸ™‚ instead of just healthy.
Fit we don’t have the bags but what a great idea, I use a sandwich press or sandwich maker….which we used to call frypan sandwiches πŸ™‚ by the way, I’m not complaining about the weather, I love the cold, I feel more alive, it’s easy to dress for winter with layers and I have more energy, the heat zaps my energy very quickly, I think that’s how I became a cricket lover, too hot outside so watched the cricket πŸ™‚
Have a lovely day/evening team xxxxx

FB – Hugs my dear, it is tough when the weight climbs up instead of down! There are many informed posts on plateaus on this forum (Suejen – I can’t find the Michael Mosely post on Plateaus that you had mentioned a couple of pages back?) But I wanted to share my own (anecdotal, not scientific πŸ™‚ experience with you.

I had a similar rant to my trainer some months back. I had lost the initial 2-3 kilos on this WOL, and then, it all stood still for a month before it moved again. He had a few opinions on it (and for me during those weeks, nearly all were applicable at various times!)
    1. Have you been doing extra cardio like spin / aerobics / step etc? If so, water weight in muscles (during their repair time) collects in the muscles, and may be accompanied by slight bloating / slight jelly-like feel of ab / leg muscles. This may briefly increase weight. Now, muscles take time to fix themselves, so we just have to wait it out πŸ™‚
    2. Is it that time of the month ? Weight gain is also possible during middle of the cycle. Can’t win on this!
    3. Are you feeling constipated? Would increasing fibre and water intake help you?
    4. Are you unwell? Again, something to do body repairing itself so water weight gain (not very clear on this, as my weight gain when ever I have flu or cold is due to comfort eating / drinking hot chocs etc LOL)
    5. Have you really recorded all that went into your mouth? Including correct portion/servings? (Me: umm, a few glasses of wine or cookies may have not been recorded…but hmmm…)
    6. Are you stressed out? ( I was – at my weight gain! )
    7. Are you on any medications that may lead to weight gain (not true for me this around, but could apply to you?)

Anyway, the above list is only to tell you that some times the cause of our weight gain or loss cannot be explained away with the calorie in/out model, I guess we don’t question it much when the graph points downward but definitely depressing when its the other way of what we want. Funnily enough, he does have a client, who has a rant at him every other week on why he is not gaining weight πŸ™‚

I kick-started the weight loss by switching to 4:3 and removing most cardio work-outs ( only lots of walking, averaging about 12K steps a day) and doing weights only 1-2 times a week. Also, reduced carbs on the diet, especially on non-FDs, but still not good at it. On an Indian vegetarian diet, it can be a tad difficult , but I basically eat dahl or curry with yoghurt instead of roti/rice. Also, switched to brown, unpolished rice instead of white and really increasing fibre.

I hope this loooong post helps you. Take care buddy πŸ™‚

Morning all ….. time at last to check in just in case you all thought I’d dropped off the edge of WA!!! Too many (good) nurses on here to have a rant but suffice to say, almost a month down the track just starting to see an improvement in my sister. Woohoo! Nobody talks to anybody else in hospitals these days, so frustrating. Also in the middle of this, my son required scans but as of Monday, came back benign so all good. Bit of a wilting mess me, but apart from a couple of days where if it stood still I ate it I managed to only gain 500grams which I lost again after Monday’s FD. So back to plateau of 57.5 and need to do some actual exercise I think to shift it.

Looking forward to reading back from page 94 or so to see what you have all been up to. So good to see some familiar posts, CG,FB,Lotus,Fit,Up, Doggie,Doit,Gypsy,SJ and Raven and newer posters. Just like coming home πŸ™‚

Good to hear from you YY, and also that your sister is better ( your son’s scare was just that – thank goodness!). Amazing that you gained only .5 kilos in all this πŸ™‚ You must have really watched what you ate and /or been running around like crazy πŸ™‚

    Evening all,
One day without checking in and I’m utterly confused. So many new “faces” and posts. I’m hopeless to keep up. Sorry! πŸ™

But, I love that we all share so much and not just 5:2 stuff, but real life stuff. We are people, not just words on a page. Cool. I’m not so good at the sharing thing. My life is not as interesting as all of yours, and right now it’s just a big ol’ bucket of stress. Three letters sum up my stress for the week- IRS. Ah, but I shant let Uncle Sam be the cause of any added pounds. He wins no matter where I live and work (apparently), but he won’t beat my diet. I will not drown my sorrows in comfort food. Take that, Uncle Sam!

Meanwhile, I hope you are all doing well. Some FDs are harder than others, and as you well know, I had a misery of a FD Monday. With all of your help, I made it and feel good for sticking it out. I have found that the hunger pangs come and go. But, I’m actually learning to interpret them as the sound of my weight loss. Is that crazy, or what? So, hang in! You can do it.

Oh, and I weigh once a week ONLY. The fluctuations in my weight just tick me off. And also, in the interests of oversharing-I’ve started to take Metamucil after dinner on FD. It seems to help.

Whew. That was a lengthy diatribe, huh? And to think, I wasn’t going to check in. Rather, I was headed into the kitchen in angry mode. Then I see you guys, and I think-life is good. So, sleep well ladies. Good luck if you are fasting tomorrow. I am too. I have no plan, though. That is future lacie’s problem πŸ™‚

Sleep tight Lacie, good luck with your fast πŸ™‚

HI eveyone! WELCOME TO ALL NEW MEMBERS .
It is worthwhile subscribing to the “FAST DIET MONTHLY NEWS LETTER” which you can find at the bottom of the page.
There is an interesting article from MICHEAL regarding the dreaded “PLATEAU” The London Daily Mail published reviewed results as follows: “Cellular benefits to fasting still occur even though you are not losing weight.
Kick start by adding an extra FD start by doing 4:3.
Although you do not need to count calories on non FD, it is still worth reviewing your refined carb intake. You may benefit from reducing your white card intake eg bread, pasta ,potatoes and rice. These are converted to sugar in your blood and will result in weight gain”
There is logic and truth in the above. Those of us have actually been doing and have gone through these phases. The article also mentions the effects of “STRESS” on our bodies. I encourage you to subscribe to the news letter for great info and updates.
I am feeling so much better , still barking but that is also my asthma. the flu
did not seem to hang around for along this time….. IS THIS ANOTHER 5:2 benefit?
Have spent the past 2 days cleaning out our dressing room. Even sorting out OH clothes. I have sooooo many bags to take to Vinnies. I cannot believe the stuff that one can accumulate over the years. this was the 1st time in 5yrs that I have cleaned the dressing room….and the things I found!
LACIE- life is good…. you joined us! we will be there all the way with you. YOU ARE NOT ALONE and YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!!
Have a good FD tomorrow…. drink warm fluids, hard boiled eggs and the MISO and other soups ready…..keep warm and be happy that you are in charge of your health and food choices. WE ARE AUSSIE DETERMINATION AND WE CAN DO THIS!!…..GO GALxxxx

Just finished my pumpkin soup for fast day dinner. I was reading the posts while sipping up my soup n I felt so much warmth. This warmth was not from soup but from comforting replies from all of you.
Lotus, thanks heaps for making an effort to explain things so nicely. I can tick three or four reasons from your list.
Thanks to one n all who took time to read n reply to my rant. I seem to be doing this often now …oops πŸ™‚
But, I am feeling better now. Your responses make so much sense and the hugs n affection from you all makes me realise about the beauty of this thread.
    Again THANKS one n all!!
I fly out to Gold Coast tomorrow morning. so, my responses will be little slow or delayed πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

    Hi All!
So good to check in this morning and see some less regular posters keeping in touch…what a great gang!
Debs – well done on avoiding the office treats, something I used to succumb to all the time when I was working, keep up the good work!
CG – as usual, you put a positive spin on everything, even the weather. If I knew where to send them, I’d post you some toaster bags; no more cleaning the sandwich maker! Maybe I’ll bring them over for our grand reunion??!!
Lotus – what a brilliant and helpful post; not just for FB but everyone who goes through the ups and downs this wol of life can throw our way at times. Thanks a million! I’m sure there is an answer in there for FB and it will give her consolation and hope too.
YY – sorry to hear you had a tough time recently but well done on keeping your weight under control, good to hear from you again – we’ve missed you.
Lacie – nice to see you’ve got that fighting spirit; what part of the US are you in? Well done on getting through FD – I agree that hunger pangs and tummy rumbles can be interpreted as fat melting and kgs groaning as they shrink!!! It all helps to visualize the benefits of this wol and keep us on track. You’re right – life is good! πŸ™‚
GG – glad to hear your health still improving; must get started on my own clear out of wardrobes etc….it’s another great way of encouraging us to keep persevering with this wol. I bought a new skirt just three weeks ago and decided I’d wear it today because the weather is really nice….to find it is now too big for me!!! It didn’t even make it out of the bag into the wardrobe!! I haven’t lost any weight or cms during this time, but something must be happening somewhere! Incredible!
Goodnight/morning everyone and best of luck for FDs during the remainder of the week. XX

FB – looks like our posts crossed. So glad you found Lotus’ advice helpful, things will improve I’m sure. Have a great trip to Gold Coast and enjoy yourself!

Have fun in Gold Coast FB! Don’t worry about checking in here too often – we’ll just quietly pine away for you here lol πŸ˜‰
GG – glad to know you are better. I have to read the newsletter but cannot find it? I have subscribed but not got it yet – maybe I put in an incorrect email address or some such.
FD pretty much over for me here – came up to 480 cals today, which is pretty good, the next challenge is tomorrow – sticking to healthy meals within TDEE…
Have any of you encountered post FD tummy upsets? It’s now become a regular feature, had a tummy upset today too, even though it was a fast day, Of course, could also be a side effect of one of my meds (metformin/ diabex)! My glucometer is still kaput, so tomorrow’s project is getting it fixed…
Hopefully careful eating tomorrow should help πŸ™‚

Woohoo Fit! Amazing result with the skirt size. So happy for you πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚
I have started buying (Uniqlo has some really smart, reasonable priced ones) elastic waist pants to accommodate frequent size changes πŸ™‚

HI one and all great to log on and see all the great posts, and the newbies. GG so glad to hear that you’re on the mend, and make sure you take your preventer (well I hope you are?) for at least 6 weeks, before you think about stopping it. The inflammation takes time to be fully gone. Gee Fit I can’t believe you changed shape that much in just 3 weeks…..wow! Can you take it in or take it back? FB have a wonderful time on the gold coast and enjoy every minute. You have certainly earned it and just be patient + patient + patient with your plateau. Also like CG be bloody-minded and don’t give in!
Hey lacie I really like your idea of your hunger pangs being the actual sound of your weight loss. It’s a great connection to make and you could really use it to motivate and encourage you through a FD. YY great to see that you’re OK despite everything in your life at present…and that you’re keeping the faith. Eating everything in sight pretty normal reaction I’d say but…..obviously it wasn’t too bad seeing you’ve only gained .5kg. Probably when you think about it there was a bit of mindfulness going on in the midst of it all. Lotus what a great reply for the plateaus……I think we ALL need to remember page 105 is where the info is……..cos we’ll all be there at some stage!! No doubt about it. CG you look pretty fantastic at 75.5 so I wouldn’t be worried about plateaus. Remember you said it’s your stable weight and…..if it happens it happens. Too true.
Well not going to dwell on the negative just letting you know where I’m at. Started with a counsellor today to try and sort out the excommunication from my daughter’s life and my 4 grandkids. Will be a long journey. But through it all I’m staying with 5:2 apart from a little blowout today – to be expected, but nothing like it would have been before! I drove past Maccas & hungry jacks and all the rest and thought about it (swear there was a whole street of them with neon lights all calling out my name!!) ……..but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it!! What a change. Once it would have been my automatic reaction. So to end on a positive, encouraging note, even in the tough times 5:2 is there for you and you’ll find that you no longer want such stuff, and no longer give in to emotional or stress eating. But hey…not saying I’m perfect….I did give in to ONE chilli chicken strip with my petrol, and a funsize snickers bar. STILL A WIN IN MY BOOK! If there’s such a thing (debatable) I would call that mindful or controlled comfort eating!
Have a great FD tomorrow all – or the next day if you’re 4:3. suejen

Suejen, I laughed about the street with the neon lights…it happens when we are stressed or trying to fast on a bad day, like every add on telly is junk food! Normally we never notice it do we. Well done and you deserved your treat. I do hope your councilor can help give you peace of mind, it’s an awful situation to be in and very hurtful, my thoughts are with you and hugs across cyber space go to you.
Fit, fancy the skirt being too big, it’s a catch 22, glad it’s too big and cross it’s never been worn…and it’s too big…take it back, say it was a gift if you lost your receipt! πŸ™‚
FB. Safe trip my friend, have a ball, we are here when you get back so don’t let your mind play games with you, one fast will fix any damage πŸ™‚
Lotus, I do get tummy upsets on fast days but usually if I have the slendier noodles, as they are roughage. Sometime too because of the extra fluids, it goes through me the next morning.. πŸ™ (too much info? )
Well fast day for most of us tomorrow, well done to you who did it today, stay positive YOU CAN DO IT, you know the drill, think of the benifits and stay warm, have a lovely evening team , thanks for the great post GG, I did get the letter, I tend to think we should hear more from Michael as he began all this! But we are capable and have shown WE CAN DO IT because we have each other πŸ™‚ xxxxxxxx

Thanks CG – maybe extra fibre and water is the reason…
Suejen- my heart goes out to you. Not got any answers for you, but i pray that your journey for answers and a calmer relationship with your daughter is successful. LOL regarding the neon lights on fast food strips – yeah, it’s some days that the b***dy things call out to us!!

SJ – you are doing all the right things and going to a counsellor is fantastic. I’m sure you know the prayer: ‘God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference’. Even if you don’t believe in a god, there is still alot of wisdom there and you can only do what you can do. XX
CG – Luckily I did keep receipt, so I hope I can change the skirt or get something else in its place. Off to my french class now and ballroom dancing later…love Wednesdays!

Good morning/evening team. That prayer is a family favourite Fit, it’s lovely. My personal one is Desiterata, it is a creed I live by, more so as I got older, becase you think differently and gain an inner strength and tolerance πŸ™‚
Well team, last fast day for the week for most of us, I hope you find them getting easier. If you believe it……You CAN do it,….. so believe in your self, no time for negativity, this is a positive WOE so tune in your thinking to the same wave lengths. We are almost through another week, our lives are going so quickly, so try not to wish it away, enjoy the experience of your fast, our weigh in will be here in the morning and look how quickly yesterday has gone.
Don’t sweat the small stuff team, if you need milk in your coffee HAVE IT, it will NOT make any difference to your fast, it’s better to have the warm fluids than suffer πŸ™‚ Have a happy day team, you are the only one responsible for your moods and attitude πŸ™‚ xxxxxxxxxx

Good morning team! All the best for today’s fasters! We can persevere, whether its cold weather or warm, because of our Aussie (and global!) Determination. One method I have recently started using to reply to people offering food or drink (e.g., in the office lunch room), is “Thanks, not today :)” It does not sound outright rude, and also stops them from asking why or me describing my fasting day (all very boring for the lay public!)

CG – what a lovely post, I love that line – “our lives are going so quickly, so try not to wish it away, enjoy the experience of your fast”. My thoughts were similar during my morning walk today- What a wonderful life I have been blessed with, let me enjoy the experience while I am here!

I totally agree Lotus, I feel very blessed, my life is better than it has ever been, the hard years are behind me, I adore living in the country, just love my little farm and animals, I certainly don’t want to wish these (final) years away. Nothing seems to faze me these days, even the weather, well I accept it and either dress for it or change my plans πŸ™‚ life is so precious so taking time to “smell the roses” is such a pleasure πŸ™‚
Have a lovely day, “Two men looked out of prison bars, one saw the mud, the other the stars” , the decision is yours πŸ™‚ xxxxx
