  • I’m interested in hearing from any type 1s who have tried this fasting. I’m a fairly active diabetic, but I’m finding that I’ve added about an inch of resilient fat to my waist that I would like to be rid of. However, given that I inject enough insulin to offset undue increases in blood sugar, I’m not sure that 5:2 will have much impact.
    Opinions are welcome.

HI ianinoz, I’m not diabetic, but wanted to say welcome. I would think it could help, but you will need to be careful about fasting and insulin. probably would need small meals instead of long fasts. hopefully someone with experience can help. I would check with my doctor about how to manage the fasting. good luck and let us know how you are doing.

    welcome ianinoz

Hi ianinoz. I’m a Type 1 who has half-heartedly started the 5:2 plan. I have the advantage of being on a pump so that makes fasting a lot, lot easier. Having said that, my description of the ‘half-hearted’ start has been due to a few mistimed hypos on fasting days that have (a) resulted in partially spoiling my fast but (b) more importantly, have caused that oh so common reaction to excess insulin in the system – the instinct to eat. I’m also in the middle of adjusting my thyroid meds so I’m expecting that may improve my fasting results.

Hi ianinoz, I am not diabetic but take an interest in some posters comments and research who are diabetic. Can I suggest the web site http://www.Diabetes.co.uk The web name speaks for itself. You will find a forum similar to this with like minded people like yourself including some who have tried both the 5:2 diet and the Newcastle diet (600 cal per day for 8 weeks) which for some was successful in reversing type2. It also contains lots of other info which may be of interest.
    Good luck.

    ianinoz
