  • Hi,

I am so unhappy today. I have been doing 5-2 for three weeks. The first two weeks I lost weight (total of 6 lbs), but today I actually put on 1 lb.

I struggle with cutting down on fasting days (I’m basically a pig I guess), so opted for not eating anything on a Monday and Thursday. Just lots of water, tea, diet-coke etc. I was surprised that it was not anywhere near as hard as I expected to do this.

Is it normal to put on a bit, or am I doing something really wrong?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

    Thanks, Glo.

Bonjour Glo999 – I took a quick look at your profile and note that you are 62, the same as me. You might not have spotted the very busy thread ‘HELP Ladies of a certain age’. Take a look – it’s excellent and full of lovely ladies who give great support and helpful advice.

I am 63 Glo999 and I have been successful with this diet and am now in maintenance. There have been weeks when I didn’t lose weight but you may find that if you measure yourself regularly you are losing inches and what’s happening is that you are holding onto water weight before your body gets rid of it and this can take a few days or even weeks. So don’t despair get out the tape measure!

    Auriga,
Thank you for your encouragement. I stayed on track yesterday and will stick it out for a couple more weeks and see how I go.
I live in Spain, so have the chance to swim every day – I just need to motivate myself. Silly, because when I was in the UK, I dreamed of this.
Anyway, I will kick my a–e into gear and do something. I will also measure myself next week.
    Gloria

Glo, do not worry about putting on a lbs! I regularly fluctuate between plus minus one or more lbs within the same day!

There are numerous reasons why you might have “put on” one lbs, while in fact you did not. Water retention due to exercise or too much sodium are just two of them. Weighing before and after you went to the toilet is another one. Weighing at different times of the day, having drunk a glass of water before weighing are others and finally, losing weight is not a steady progress.

I have decided a long time ago, just to note down my lowest weight and to ignore fluctuations. I am now at goal weight and it worked for me.

Just stick to it and completely ignore weight “gains” on the scale, at least as long as the long term trend is downwards. If you see though that the trend is up, you will have to have a close look at your diet on non fast days.

I use myfitnesspal to log all of my food and a food scale to weigh the food. It is very easy to underestimate portions!

    Best of luck
    Stef.

Hi all, I am also 62, just, and this is my 2nd week on 5:2. I find the fasting days kinda easy but have not lost any lbs yet. I am now trying to slightly restrict my “normal” days and see if this kicks my system into activation. today my 2nd day for the week I was up 3lbs, but did have a burger for dinner and a couple of drinks. So I will try to cut the drinks out till the weekend and see if it helps.
