  • Hi
I’ve been going 5:2 for a while now with some success. I’ve been really interested in eating for hormone balance… Which is what IF helps with, the increase in leptin. I’ve contained reading and delved more into the effects of carbs and insulin on fat loss. So interesting. And so now I’m dipping my toe in combining 5:2 with LCHF approach.

Just wondered if anyone else out there is doing the same?

My normal weightless is a 1lb every 1.5 weeks on 5:2 alone. Cutting down on my carbs and increasing my ‘good’ fats has helped me release more! First week on it 5llb. Yes mostly water weight but wow… And shrinking now at a much quicker rate. And I have to say, even on fast days I’m hardly ever hungry. On one hand it feels counter intuitive to all I have ever thought about eating fat, but on the other the science stacks up and it’s so much easier!!!

    Anyone there??

Funny you posted this! I too hot into looking at leptin and glucose etc. On my non fast days, I have been watching not only carbs ( even whole wheat bread), but also fructose. Down 3 lbs last week, 3 the first week, and will weigh in Saturday.

    Hi @fitnfast

How did you get on Saturday? Working for you?

Hi… How did you get on Daturday? Is it working for you?

Have to say… I feel so less bloated!

HI! Yep, down another 1.8 lbs! I did eat a bit more than usual this past week, but it was mostly protein.

Hi. I have been fasting all this year and hit a plateau about 3 mths. I was fasting every 3rd day- so it was really 9:5 and when I hit plateau I increased to 4:3. What I saw was that the carbs were making me put on too much weight in between fast days. For a number of reasons my family went total paleo 6 weeks ago. It got me off the plateau and I can lose weight fasting only the 2 days which I prefer! I have lost 13.5 kilos this year with only 6.5 to go.
So I am with you- I need to go low carb high fat and feel great for it. I have gone low carb before and it hasn’t worked but now I have found the answer for me.

It’s amazing (and frustrating!) how your body reacts to certain foods, isn’t it? Sometimes I am almost afraid to try something new, for fear it will end up on my hips! Well, not so much anymore, though, with the FD plan….

Hello 🙂 I have only recently begun the 5:2 diet with exercise (mostly about 30 minutes of mindful activity every day, this usually means walking to meet a goal of 10,000 steps/day) and strength/stretch exercises each day (again, not a lot, just enough to feel strong and healthy)

I have combined this lifestyle with LCHF and feel amazing. I am still researching my way through this. I only know at this point, I feel GREAT!

Great to see others are getting benefits from 5:2 and LCHF.

I cant believe how much my cravings for sugary/carby things has reduced. I noticed they dipped when I first started 5:2 but only on fast days and the next day – however this depended very much on what I broke my fast with etc.

Also having higher level of fat in my diet means I am not nearly as hungry when fasting.

Still reading and researching, but so much of this makes sense.

    How is everyone else doing?

Yes, this is the approach I am using. I call it my “decadent” diet as it tastes SO good! and I do not have the guilt over the higher fat! At present I eat NO starch, no sugar, no processed foods. Only seems to leave protein, fat and vegetables that grow above ground.

    Love it!!!!!

Not doing as well as others, but that is because I am severely diabetic (type 2) That is why I am on this new approach to health – to cure myself of this disease. It is why you will see that periodically I have longer fasts.

Have been at this since end of January and have lost 20 lbs. For me it is 2 steps forward, 1 step back.

Starting a longer fast today to reduce my sugar levels.

There is nothing wrong with having plenty of high quality fat in your diet. In fact your body needs it. But including The nutrients and fiber in high quality low GI carbs is also essential to long term health.

I’ve lost 70lbs of fat and kept it off for 20 years by eating a diet of ~35% good fats from avocado, coconut, grass fed butter, olive oil and organic meats, 40% protein and 25% carbs mostly from non starchy veggies. The exception to low GI carb rule for me is I eat high GI carbs after working out hard, usually white rice. Once meal a week I pig out on carbs usually pizza or pasta.

Some of you mentioned Leptin control please keep in mind if you eat low carb all the time Leplin levels will be low as it tracks insulin release. You need to eat crappy carbs once in a while to spike insulin and Leptin.

Hi @diverdog do you have dairy (aside from butter)? Reading lots of controversial stuff on it.

IGS, I ate dairy all my life until 3 years ago. I was tested for inflammatory foods (ALCAT) dairy and egg yolks came out as big no-no’s for me. Since minimizing them I have less food craving and seem to sleep better.

One other fatty food I eat is nuts, mostly walnuts almonds and macadamia

Hi there, I’ve not long been doing LCHF and been reading about the benefits of IF. I haven’t lost any weight recently, I did in the first week when I lowered carbs. I’m looking at the fast diet, how are you doing this? Are you doing two days lower calorie then rest LCHF. On the low cal days are your carbs going up or are you eating more protein? And most importantly are you loosing weight?
    Many thanks

Phoebe1, unfortunately most of your initial weight loss on a very low carb diet is just water and glycogen and not much fat.

Basically 5:2 fast days are supposed to be very low carb and 1/4 of your TDEE. For me it means good fats protein and non starchy veggies. NFD’s eat whatever you want but limit calories to TDEE. I eat a higher than normal % of fat but I also eat higher GI carbs after my workouts on NFD’s. Once a week I allow myself a very carby meal like pizza and a desert to purposely spike my blood sugar.

You can lose weight on a very low carb diet but as soon as you eat carbs expect a rapid weight gain. Having kept off a lot of weight for years I find a very low carb diet impossible to maintain.

I’ve been on 5:2 now for 4 1/2 weeks and I’ve lost 9 lbs of fat. I’m 64 YO 5’10” and weigh 174 lbs. I have about 8 lbs more to hit my target.

Wow Diverdog it’s lovely to hear from your experiences and success thank you. What is NFD? Thank you.

Non Fast Day. To be clear I’m pro higher fat lower carbs eating. But you need to be careful about total calorie intake. Fat does have a higher calorie density. Veggies like cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, tomato, cucumber, watercress, arugula, beets etc are loaded with fiber, micro-nutrients and anti oxidants and are a must have in any diet plan. Sure they have some carbs too but not enough to spike your blood sugar. The carbs to avoid are the high GI type like bread, sugar, rice and potatoes unless you are exercising intensely. Then an after workout meal with some high GI carbs is OK.

    Good luck in your effort!

    Many thanks
