Good Evening All,
It was a fantastic Rick Choir concert and I managed to sing all the songs. It will be on utube soon so you can check it out. The concert was in the Gulbenkian Theatre, Colyer Ferguson building. Enjoy!
Time for bed, very tired

Greetings all, I have been on such a merry go round these past six months. Settling into a new job, a new place and living on my own for the first time ever has been a huge learning curve. Weight has stayed relatively the same as I just did not consistently follow the life style! Have been more focussed these past few weeks. I need the encouragement of this forum so will have to simply log in, I often think of you Amazon re exercise. I love it when I get to the gym and pleased to say I have been able to maintain a good exercise schedule….. I went to buy a bike last holidays but have yet to do so…. Had a dreadfully funny experience where I accidentally trialled a customers bicycle….it was left in middle of showroom and the attendant had left me to try each one…..I am still laughing!
I am wondering who did vote to leave the EU in the UK … Every post I read etc seems to indicate otherwise!
So many new posters! For those who remember my sadness re son moving to Milan for study at same time as I left Adelaide, he has come back…mother hen happy that her chickadees are in the same state! Letting go is hard!
Well onwards and downwards emel
Hi – I am in I have been doing this for 3 weeks and its working and I need to be a bit more switched on to it though. Including some more exercise, I do Tibetan five rites each day and walk the dogs. May even start jogging again. At 57 I have had a hysterectomy and couldnt seen to get motivated to lose the weight i gained over a year ago. It will be good to read others comments. I fast on Mondays and Thursdays (well have 500 cals)…Thanks for the support
I should change my name to Ali wore a bikini today! Definitely felt ok compared to most people here in Palm Springs. Have eaten very healthy – zero carbs for 2 days and I have to say my stomach is much flatter. A few drinks though. But my hubbies movie went down super well at the festival.
I see a lot of talk about exercise. Has nobody read the fast exercise book? I did and have been doing HIT and it makes a huge difference. It doesn’t take up too much time. I posted before that Gillian Michaels does a 28 minute exercise – it’s on YouTube and we can all spare 28 mins out of our day? It’s called 30 day shred.
Funnily all the talk about Adele. The director of my husbands movie knows her really well as her daughter is Adele’s best friend! Indeed she does have a potty mouth as we call it, but I love how real she is and a beautiful voice.
No fasting for me as too much drinking at the filmmaker parties, but avoiding the carbs has been good and will get back to fasting next week! Just came back from yummy dinner of tuna tartare and fish with vegetables. Getting ready to go to a party now…….not a bad life!
I have been most interested in the discussion regards exercise or the lack there of and in fact what actually constitutes exercise and how we are all so different as to what this way of life really means to each and every one of us. Therefore to me whilst walking seems a fairly low impact exercise dog walking pace itβs the consistency that is key for me and I strive for 10000 steps daily but do not record the calories as a reduction and extra eating opportunities I treat it as more of a me time and a celebration of the sheer privilege of being alive and growing younger π‘ so I do not count this as exercise as such for me it is in fact just my way of life now. Purple once wrote give her a glass of wine over a piece of cake any day thank you. Amazon once wrote why eat when youβre not hungry you do not have to very strange isnβt it that sometimes we choose to eat even though we are not hungry at all to avoid any negativity and just implement the mindful eating hand brake and good portion control also safe in the knowledge that in the privacy of our own workplace or home we can fast it off so I am happy to fast another day rather than engage a personal trainer or join a gym thatβs my study of one on a very lazy Sunday afternoon. Slim βjatz crackersβ has a different meaning here Australiana than just a saviour biscuit trust me π
The less you eat the more you lose.
Peace RT
Congratulations on the bikini wearing Ali.
I think you’ll find many of us have read Fast Exercise and probably include it’s concept within our lives. What does not get across to many “newbies” is that exercise is a fabulous, beneficial ‘add on’, but not really a means of reducing fat. That requires regular fasting and changes of gastronomic habits.
We went on a 2 1/2 hour heavy duty bush walk this morning. Quite a few 3 minute intervals of high intensity work within it. HIIT can be incorporated within everyday life. P βΊ
EDIT: Hi RT
I’m still a firm believer in a glass of wine over “evil” carbs. Just had a “small” roast dinner at the local club ($13.50). Delicious. Perfect size. Saved cooking. And, as per my motto, a glass of wine instead of dessert. ππ
Lovely catching up! I’ve been away nearly a week, put on two pounds π’ and no fast day window in sight before Wednesday as I’ve now got visitors to entertain. Ho hum.
I’ve been totally down over the UK vote. Came back from a wonderful trip looking at the most fab gardens not usually open to the public then woke up to that. I was in London and people I was with there were all bar one bewildered not jubilant. Ah well, it will spin out with time.
The gardens and some of the places were wonderful. Saw an old tithe barn from about 1450 and a beautiful little church with a side wall built in Saxon times, pre 1066, unusual as many such were either built of wood or knocked down for larger Norman building. The wall had a lovely sort of feathered pattern in the stone, and a coat of arms on another wall painted in the mid 1500s. And the old manor was timber framed, built in 1460s, nestling among beautiful borders of roses, thickly planted lavender, geraniums and many other herbaceous plants. Oh, and one place, a farm, had a fabulous veg garden, all organic, with companion planting of plants to deter pests. Thought of Happy, as there was little evidence of slugs…..but the owner said she did slug patrol!
I woke at 4.30 this morning, couldn’t sleep so made tea, now catching up with threads. This thread moves on so fast!
Morning/evening all,
Lots of interesting posts overnight.
emel,
hello, I hope you are enjoying life in Clare, it is a lovely town in a beautiful part of Australia. Good to know you have managed to maintain after such a huge change in your life.
Slim, fish wife is a very old expression and originally referred to the wives of fishermen who used to sell their fish but the definition nowadays is “a coarse mouthed woman prone to shouting”
As for cream crackered that is rhyming slang for the word “knackered” which over here can be used to mean exhausted or worn out.
Knacker is an old word for someone who used to buy old/worn out horses and slaughter them for their meat and hides.
I got on the scales this morning and I weigh the same as before I went to Cornwall so once again I’ve been in training for maintenance π It has been a difficult week for me in many ways and I knew I hadn’t lost anything before stepping onto the scales because I ate too much on my non FDs. I’m glad the week is over as it has been difficult in many ways and I can start anew tomorrow, hopefully with more success.
To add to that, the bread I made yesterday was a disaster and went into the bin after I ate a rather disappointing egg sarnie. I have been experimenting with spelt flour which I’ve been mixing with ordinary strong flour. It has not been a success and I don’t really like the flavour so it’s back to wholemeal.
It is dry and warm here but only intermittent sunshine. I’ve not needed to water anything this week as even the pots and tubs have received sufficient rainwater to keep them going. The garden looks great apart from the petunia blooms which are looking rather bedraggled π
We eat when we aren’t hungry for many reasons and I guess for someone like me it is simply because I love food and think about it constantly and I know I’m not the only one.
Have a good one everybody π
Good Morning/Noon/Evening
The northeastern of the US it’s looking good weather wise for Sunday. Today is the day we see those very expensive cars strolling down the avenue with the top down.
All our neighbors have landscapers working for them. We don’t and ours is the nicest… We do need badly rain… No water sprinkler in our property.
Exercise – I do belong to an exercise club for 11 years now. They have everything under the sun available in terms of machines and classes. The swimming pool is huge and heated. Nowadays I manly use for yoga and Pilates. The days of over exerting is gone! Aches and pain here and there stopped me from jogging.
What I really enjoy is going to the forest and walk with the doggy. I have tons of exercising videos… Just passing them forward.
We are all different and listening to ourselves helps us get there. This phase of my life I prefer “gentle”. I am not in a hurry just savouring as time goes by.
Good luck for those already fasting on the other side ahead of the world.
Enjoy this beautiful Sunday π
Amazon, thank you for the translation. I was too tired last night after my stout….maybe not cream crackered but pretty tired. Sorry your week was hard, Good luck on your better week next week
David and I decided to try something different on the weekends to give us more flexibility. Since we are still doing every other day fasting, weekends can be hard in the summer- too much fun to be had. We shall do a fast eat fast eat pattern for both days…in other words no nibbles here and there. We will wait until really good hunger arises but then havie a nice healthy meal or something special if we are out or at Summer festival, ..then keep MWF fasts, and Tues,Thurs ver highly nutrient dense and fiber filled. (I suppose this is a way of saying no net carbs but I prefer the positive spin lol)
Ali wears a bikini, well done!
Welcome Karenpp, this thread helps me stay focused and supported for sure!!
Purple, I’m used to the hard woods of the northeast or the giant pines of the northwest, so when people here in Texas as me to go walk in the forest I usually get there and say , ” where’s the forest?” I think bush walk would be much more accurate… I think I will start it up and see if it catches on!
Good to see you Apricot, your trip sounded really nice.
We are taking kids to see Finding Doree today. Should be exciting for them as they have only been to a movie theatre a couple of times. For me it may be a challenge as I associate movie theatres with indulging in junk food. π³

You made me laugh re Olympic level floor scrubbing. ππ. I shall smile as I scrub on Tuesday. Enjoy Wimbledon. Switching my fast day this week as we are having lunch with friends on Monday.
It was minus 5 C last night and the temp topped out at 9 C this afternoon. We are expecting a max of 9C all week. I am sooooo looking forward to going to Hawaii on Thursday. βοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈ
Cheers, Bay πΊπΊπΊ
Hi everyone. Another four pounds down this week, same as last week and long may it continue. We had our usual Sunday Lunch but without the very high sugar pudding and didn’t feel sleepy on the way back, so we shall continue this in the future. I also only had two pints of real ale instead of the usual three (one pint per course), though I’m thinking of trying just one pint next week as apparently they are about 200 calories each.
It was supposed to be a FD tomorrow but we are going to Morecambe again as it looks to be the only day of the week it will not be raining all day and we are taking our bikes again. We plan to cycle to Heysham for coffee then back to Morecambe for fish & chips, then back to the car and home, hopefully not getting lost on the way back like we did last Thurday.
Had a go at the sit/stand test and couldn’t even manage one, I can get down okay if I hang on to something but then spend the next ten minutes rolling around on the floor. I think I’ll stick to the 30 second chair test as my doctor advised some time ago and not worry myself with thoughts of mortality.
Have a good day everybody.
Anyone who has a back/pelvic/leg or foot problem is going to have a problem succeeding and none of those are life threatening so I’m taking the idea that it is a predictor of longevity with a large pinch of salt.
It is however a good indicator of fitness and mobility which both become more important as we age, and in general those who remain fit and mobile will live longer but there are always exceptions.
Amazon,
My problem with the sit stand test has been loss of flexibility in my lower back. Earlier in the year I couldn’t lower myself to the floor hands-free, let alone stand up again.
I agree that having a knackered back hopefully exempts me from dying young! But I was pleased to achieve a perfect 10 (once only, probably never to be repeated!) since it demonstrated how much my back has improved since January/ February.
We’ve had a wet and cool afternoon here, conducive to a bit of polytunnel gardening and not much else. The bloody awful weather has perfectly suited my mood this weekend though. We’re thinking we should move further north…to Scotland. Wee, have you got a spare room? π
Wow Jojo…thats an impressive heap of activity!
Nearlyslimjim….well done on the 4lbs…thats a great result.
Ali…well done on wearing that bikini π
PVE and RT…totally get what you are saying about exercise. I dont intend doing it for weight loss/fat loss, just for the other benefits. But I will incorporate some HIIT into my days π
Ive been a bit too relaxed these last couple of days, so obviously eating without counting the cals isnt a good thing for me at the moment. I need to be more disciplined with myself π
Tomorrow is a FD for me so Im going to attempt a zero cal day again which will bring me to the end of week 3.
No social events on this week, so I should be able to have a good week!
Its been grey and damp here in the UK today so Ive not done much at all. Heres hoping the weather picks up again and we have a bit more sunshine.
Have a good evening/day …. depending on where you are!
Happy,
I’ve had two surgeries on my left knee, I have early arthritis in my right hip which has caused some loss of flexibility and a weak right leg which I’m trying to improve at the moment. My back isn’t as strong and flexible as it could be either and I’m working on that too.
I’ve also had surgery on both big toes due to a condition called hallux rigidus which is arthritic in origin. The operation involved removing the sesamoid bones from underneath the joint and they play a part in balance eg I can no longer stand with heels raised off the ground which caused no end of issues and a degree of hilarity during my Pilates classes. I hope there’ll come a day when I can do the sit/stand test but I’m not holding my breath just working away at getting my body as strong and flexible as I can, so I understand how pleased you must have felt when you succeeded π
I’ve spent much of today with my nose in the Sunday papers reading various opinions regarding why the Leave vote won the referendum, whose fault it is, who the next PM will be, how inadequate Corbyn is, how the French hate us (nothing new there π ) blah blah blah and I have to say I find the whole issue thoroughly depressing.
I’m going to bury myself in tennis for the next two weeks.
SlimnHealthy mentioned Pilates, which I have been considering for some time. Unfortunately I live out in the sticks, but there is a Pilates class I could join in a church hall about 15 miles away and they also do a kettlebells workout on the same night after the Pilates.
What would the benefits be of doing Pilates one day a week and would a kettlebells workout affect the Pilates for good or ill. Any advice?
Amazon, you forgot to mention the rise in racist abuse and hate crime which I must say makes me really proud to be British… Not. Two weeks of tennis, and let’s hope this has all been a bad dream π
Jim, I can’t comment on Pilates and kettle bells but I am increasingly intrigued by where you live…. You visit Morecambe, you’re in the sticks, 15 miles to a church hall….I’m currently thinking maybe Forest of Bowland somewhere…. π
Jim,
Why don’t you give Pilates a go first. I found it took me a couple of months to feel that I was getting anywhere but once I did I really enjoyed it and want to take it up again.
Once you’ve decided whether Pilates is for you or not, you can decide if you’ve got the energy for kettlebells as well or if you want to try it insted of Pilates.
I don’t think doing both would be counter productive but you might be very tired afterwards.
Happy, as a member of a mixed race family I find it very distressing to read and hear much of what has been said and the fact that it is the reason cited for some voting Leave. Of course I live in the multicultural capital city and am more used than some to living with people from different countries and cultures as it is something I grew up with and therefore did not think of it as unusual, but that actually makes it harder to accept.
NearlySlim…I do Pilates twice a week with a trainer. I have some upper body stuff going on and she’s quite to shift exercises if something is hurting me. You can find lots of fine Pilates DVDs or Youtube videos. My core is much stronger, my posture is much improved. Until the upper body stuff started, I did kettlebell too. I did a Kettlelates class. They work well together.
Ha
Slimn “bush walk” is Aussie vernacular for non urban hiking. Think rugged sandstone gullies with rippling streams to cross by jumping across rocks, scrambling back up the other side, over boulders, squeezing between rock walls, ducking under overhanging rock ledges, pushing aside dense undergrowth, avoiding burnt tree trunks, all the while admiring the light filtering through the towering eucalyptus trees. The “bush” around Sydney is rugged sandstone forest. As it is not arable, and too steep to build on easily, we are blessed with lots of National Parks around our city. Traversing the tracks within them is a great adventure. Brilliant whole body workout and great for the spirit.
Keep warm Bay…lucky girl to escape to Hawaii! Enjoy.
4″ snow just west of Sydney last night. Yes, Amazon..it does get cold here. βββP
Hello,
About to say good night! I’ll try to make it short.
Yoga/Pilates – it is 11 years I am doing both! Instructors at my gym are so narcissist (sorry I am judging) I can’t stand the though of such. I’ve tried several classes until I found the right energy that made sense to me. Yoga is more mind and body (good balance) and Pilates it’s toning the core.
My coleslaw I use honey instead if sugar, lemon, yogurt, kefir, raisins, walnuts … Sorry I cook with my mood …and varies π
The news are depressing!
Had a great walk in the woods today and the mosquitoes were trying to have me as their meal.
The drama of the day was we waking up with the woodpecker trying to go after the holes from the carpenter bees looking for the larvae. Because we live in the woods them bees I’ve ignored it for years. My idea was going up in the roof and put some cd’s attached to a string to distract the bird. The bees I’ll seek proper advice. We are in the woods and I love it.
Busy week and fast goes on tomorrow.
Sorry not to mention names …. Happy Fasting Week π
π
Hi Fasters
I am back and my Monday fast is beginning after the trips to Rome and Porto.
I must say your referendum in Britain has been worrying me even though its main repercussion would be that my UK husband would have to apply to the French authorities to visit me here and we may not have the freedom of movement as before, and of course a lower valued pound hit us immediately. The Guardian newspaper is saying this morning that the section 50 which takes England out of Europe may never be activated.
Porto is a lovely city to visit and quite hilly so we had plenty of exercise.
The vinho verde is wonderful. We coincided with the festival of st John, their patron saint. The fireworks and animation were entertaining and people are very friendly to visitors.
Now I am back on the fast track, with Monday, Wednesday and Friday fasts planned this week, with a visit to Chateauneuf de Pape near Avignon on Thursday planned, to take a friend wine Tasting. It’s a very nice red wine area.
It’s been a busy thread since I have been away. Good Energy here.
xx Wiwi
I thought I would post an update on OH’s progress with 5:2. After a plateau of six – yes, six! – months, his weight is finally dropping again. So hang on in there, all you who are not seeing any movement on the scales.
I am listening to the choir as I write, Jojo. Lovely. Sorry to hear about your back, but good news about your daughter getting fulltime work. π
Morning/evening all
Sunshine, Wimbledon starts today π
Hi Wiwi, the leave vote will have far reaching effects across the world. I have no idea what will happen now but it is going to be a very difficult time for many, in particular UK citizens. The awful thing about it is that those who voted leave due to feeling ignored and isolated and who are struggling to make a living, put a roof over their head and feed their families will be the worst affected.
FD for me and off to the gym soon.
Have a good one everybody π
I agree it’s very depressing. I grew up in Africa as did my father, who spoke an African language (ChiNyanja) before he was 5 and grew up as a lone white among many black people. I find racism both frightening and angering with its lack of any logic or humanity. My brother has lived and worked in France for 37 years but now I expect it will be hard for him there, thanks to this mess.
Travelling down from London on Friday and walking in the streets yesterday I’ve heard people on all sides deploring what has happened. It therefore seems so strange that this vote went the way it did, but perhaps it wasn’t the more vocal travelling population that voted to leave!
Pilates has been my joint saver and has helped to relieve and reverse the arthritis that started before I was 60. The more often I do it the better things are – when I doubled my classes to make up for some missed ones I realised how important it is to do your own at home between classes. That and sea swimming have really helped everything.
My weight is back down, thank goodness, after walking and exploring on Dartmoor with friends over the weekend and nice light fish meals.. (For you non Brits, Dartmoor is a beautiful wild area of heathland and hills, roamed by semi-wild ponies and sheep.) The best I can do this week is maintain it as I’ve too much travelling on to fast properly. Will just try to leave large gaps between meals and eat sensibly, low carb if I can. Back to fasting on Wed or Thurs.
Have a good week everyone and success to your FDs.
Hi all,
3:30 am in Austin and can’t sleep. Good to know someone’s awake. My husband had a beer last night n he is snoring like a freight train.
Not as easy to fast after a bad nights sleep so trying to just get my mind off sleep for a bit n then try again.
Forgot to give my Finding Doree Review. Well done, no Australian currents this time, though a fun pair of British sea lions play a fun role. I still like Finding Neemo best but worth seeing. Kids enjoyed.
Sorry to see everyone so upset n worried about Referendum. Saw a news report here n reporter asked if another vote might reverse it all now that the consequences were becoming a reality. British diplomat hesitantly said it might, especially since it would take years to untangle all the connections.
If it’s muscular spasms Jojo, Epsom salts baths! Does wonders for my back when I overdo it.
I will try n sleep now.
Since when did this become a political forum? Can we keep it to discussing 5:2 and how that affects our lives please? Discussion of racism as if that is in some way linked to the referendum except in the minds of a very few very narrow minded people is extremely unhelpful. Back to talking about the way of eating please post haste!
Nothing,
A lot of issues are discussed on the forum, many of them with no direct or obvious link to fasting.
I’m sorry you don’t like to read discussions about issues that are affecting the lives of forum contributors. But I’m afraid you have no authority to control what is or is not talked about on the internet.
Nothing, as most of us on this thread have been chatting for over 2 years about everything that concerns our lives, of course the UK referendum, which is impacting on people all around the world, will be part of these discussions.
If you don’t feel part of it, there are plenty of other places to find a conversation you might approve of. PVE
Happy, and everyone, do you really think it is a good idea to get into politics here? If so, I will bow out. There are dozens of websites devoted to that, I thought this was about the 5:2 way of life primarily, with some interesting and, importantly, non controversial asides about lifestyle, hobbies etc.
I’m not attempting to control what is posted but just saying in my opinion it doesn’t belong here. If I’m in the minority there, then so be it
NTLBMY, we have been communicating with each other for so long about aspects of our lives that it is a habit, and we are certainly don’t do this exclusively.
This is a chat room and we are quasi friends and we support each other on many levels. We share the highs and lows of life and the thread has evolved as we feel more and more attachment to our cyber buddies.
We are happy to help in any way we can on this WOL, but we love to chat generally.
I don’t think we can talk exclusively about 5 2. Thanks to 5 2 or 4 3 or ADF or 19 5, we are getting our lives together, but our lives are more than FD.
The other thing is that this forum is frequented by most interesting people with experiences that make interaction a very rich experience.
I just don’t think we can do what you are asking.
Tangatawiwi
Jo,
That’s a very important point about stress. I know the referendum result certainly had an impact on my eating habits this weekend!
Nothing,
If you read the papers or search the internet you will see that there has been a number of reports of racial abuse following the referendum result. The small-minded ones are surely the people (a small minority of leave voters) who stupidly thought a vote to leave Europe meant an end to immigration and that they now have some sort of licence to abuse others?
OK, you want to talk about politics, then. My objection was to the post by Apricot:
“I agree itβs very depressing. I grew up in Africa as did my father, who spoke an African language (ChiNyanja) before he was 5 and grew up as a lone white among many black people. I find racism both frightening and angering with its lack of any logic or humanity.”
The implication being somehow that we are a racist country now. That is simply not true. Apricot, please indicate how you think your implication that the referendum is in any way linked to racism is valid? Facts and statistics please. Not anecdotes.
There is nothing new in racist abuse, but we may be shining more of a spotlight on it at the moment. It happens from all races to all races and is to be abhorred under any circumstances.
Also, Happy et al, not terribly pleased with the “you’re new, so your opinion is less important attitude.
