  • I adore this thread. Just the thought of going to sleep whilst someone in Aus tells me they are having Friday lunch makes me feel like I’m looking in a time machine! I kid you not, I used to think about this when I was little, wishing I could see or hear the people in a different time. Lol I would wait weeks just to get a pen pal letter from Canada. Lol.
As for the politics, it’s good SlimJim is stocking up on his beans and letting us know who to blame πŸ˜‹… though the demographics pretty much told us. πŸ˜‰ It’s great fasting brings us all together.
Im doing a full day fast – 2 protein shakes for a total of 320 calories before hubby comes home from biz trip late tonight. Send him prayers to get through Denver without delay please. We miss him.

Nearly midnight here on east coast Aus now, Slimn. As you guys start your Friday, we are heading into Saturday.
Marvellous how the internet allows us to chat, share ideas, get to understand our similarities and recognise our differences. Hopefully, one day, bigotry and hatred will be a thing of the past and we can all share this beautiful world fairly.
Snow on the mountains in the south of NSW. Minus 15, wind chill, there today. Yes folks, it can get cold in Australia too. I’m rugged up in bed, pyjamas and bedsocks on (a very rare sight), well fed, with cold winds howling outside.
    ‘night all. P

Ali- the LA smog has already got you. Jim was being ironic. 😳 No panic buying …..yet.

NEARLYSLIM .. All the people in my family and all of my friends voted YES last time soo there should be a lot more next time I am sure . We will sail through it πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Wee- it seems I claimed my Scottish heritage just in time! 😊 Still curious if you see my name there.
    (Strickland)

Drinking my first shake and so far so good. This will be my first successful all day fast in a week and Very determined.

    Slimn,

Although your ancestors may have been in Scotland, the family name appears to have originated in Cumbria.

    This, from ancestry.co.uk
Strickland Name Meaning – English: habitational name from a place in Cumbria, so called from Old English styr(i)c, steorc β€˜bullock’ + land β€˜land’, β€˜pasture’

And see, which also suggests Cumbria (Westmorland) as the origin,
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strickland_(surname)

No shame in coming from Cumbria though, a fine northern English county!

Nama be jumping up and down on the couch last night like Tom Cruise on Oprah πŸ˜† the pies are hot again and big Trav a much better game 2 goals some 7 clean grabs and goal assists really great to see him competitive Fremantle on the other hand 1 goal in a half of footy at the G not hungry enough simply not good enough they seem defeated and some dis interested to me.
Our Australian share market has plummeted off the back of Britain’s decision to leave the EU. I am using the opportunity to increase my stake in the Commonwealth Bank to buy at $72.57 having dropped 3.27% or $2.45 yesterday all the banks are good buying at the moment and returns fully franked are excellent. ANZ -4.09% $23.44 NAB -3.79% $24.61 Westpac -4.42% $28.34 Bank of Queensland -4.34% $10.36.

    Peace RT

slimn . I have heard the name pal . bot I don’t know anyone called Strickland ( yet) xx

    Slmn,

Kendal in Cumbria has a Stricklandgate (road), and there’s a Strickland Arms (pub) at Sizergh near Kendal. The following suggests that Cumbrian ‘Strickland’ originated in Scandinavia

    http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/STRICKLAND.htm

Surnames can obviously originate in several places from different origins, but it looks like the British line may not have originated in Scotland….

Obviously some of your Strickland mates came here too. Quite a common name and place/street name in Sydney. P

well blow my mind..granny always talked about the name being scottish, but she was a good story teller..my hands looked like hers and she said they were princess hands, hahaha.

Anyway, Cumbria sounds just fine…but wait, Scandanavia? Viking? and some in Aus…well, now you see why I didnt bother to ever look it up..confusing. πŸ™‚

Anywho, thanks for looking gang, and I think I have this fast in the bag! 7pm, finished making kids dinner and i still have a shake left!

Nice work with the fast Slimn 😊
Just think of the Stricklands as go getters! P

Yep Stricklands in Melbourne too – our Anglo roots in Australia..
RT, last nights game was cause for celebration, not quite of the Oprah variety though! I think Freo’s woes are just the Karmic bus coming for Ross Lyon – after the way he treated St Kilda. Good to see our very own Rogue Trader is making the most of the financial markets!
Our media is certainly jammed with news from the UK at present, interesting. Wonderful that we have a democracy where historic changes can happen without bloodshed.

Sitting having a warmup coffee by a lake. Did you know pelicans yawn when they wake up? I wonder if they then decide what to eat? Hmmm…fish or fish? πŸ˜€πŸ˜€ P

hahaha P!The Stricklands I knew were peace lovers but go getters? I think that comes from my mom, a Gann…oh boy, here we go…

Yawn, fish or fish, much less complicated.

BTW Happy, that was really cool to read the link you provided. I had never seen my name growing up in Ohio or anywhere in the Northeast.

    Hi Slimn,

It took me a while to make the connection, but living in Cumbria I realised I had seen the name! There’s also a village called Great Strickland.

Given it’s such a very old name, there was plenty of time for a distant ancestor to settle over the border in Scotland and start your family line. I’m sure granny wasn’t telling tall tales πŸ™‚

    Hi Everyone,
Internet sorted at last but wrote this last night and it refused to post, probably duplicate now.

Just thought I would catch up as I am in bed unable to sleep. Hyped up after going to a ‘Thriller’ Michael Jackson tribute this evening. It was great, terrific singers and dancers plus the stage set ups were incredible. Video clips on Facebook.

The whole week has been hell up until tonight. Two funerals and lots of housework. I even cleaned out my car(no mean job as my dogs use the boot daily, dog hair hell) plus I have lost most bowls games this week. Focus has been very low as has my mood. Also my ankle and back have been playing up. Moan, moan, moan!

Weight has remained stuck, quite disciplined with food choices where possible.

I had a work colleague with the surname Strictland and she originated in Kent but her parents came from the North of England, Northumbria I think!

What a shock I got over the EU Referendum result. My household and friends were all ‘remain’ voters. The consequences are unsettling.

Speak tomorrow. Hope everyone is well.

Tennis looks interesting Amazon! May get to watch some this weekend. Enjoy Wimbledon, I have been many times, love the atmosphere and the strawberries, didn’t even mind the rain. Ha Ha.

    HealthCoachB,
I have arranged for JJ in admin to send you me email address.
Please get in touch when you get a chance.

    Morning/evening all,

Hi Jo, sorry you’ve had a bad week. Mine hasn’t been the best but it is nearly over.
Fasting has been a real challenge this week but I’ve managed two. The non fast days have been even more difficult so I doubt I’ve lost anything. I attempted a 3rd FD yesterday but it turned into a 1000 calories but considering how the week has gone I’m happy with that. I’m going to try again today :fingerscrossed:

I’ll be getting a bit more than strawberries at Wimbledon as it is a hospitality package, morning coffee followed by champagne/Pimms, three course lunch with wine, afternoon tea and of course a Centre Court ticket. I am really looking forward to it and am going to wear my new dress which shows the world that I now have a waist πŸ™‚

It’s a nice warm and sunny morning here, long may it remain that way.

Happy, I got your email, thank you very much πŸ™‚

Have a good one everybody 😜

    Amazon,
You will love it and look fabulous. What colour is the dress, will I be able to spot you on TV? I went to a hospitality event years ago (and I am talking decades) with a friend who worked for a London bank, executive perk, alright for some hey! The only perk I got at work was chocolates and biscuits and we all know how that helped me.
Yes it’s been a trial this week, both health and mood. It’s hard to be positive when you have funerals to attend and distraught friends to comfort. They cannot see light at the end of the tunnel, just loneliness. Both friends have lost long term partners, 50 years plus. But ‘bowlers’ support their friends, it one of the good aspects of being in a group.

At least the news is good with my family, my daughter now has a full time teaching post, she had been part time for last 6 months, financially quite difficult and my son looks set to start a new job in London. My ex( partner) has finally agreed to retire next summer so I will get help doing up the house before selling it. It’s far too big for two of us.

I will fast tomorrow as I need my energy today, choir performance tonight. I am saving my voice for the main event, miming at rehearsals. My friend has some voice lozenges which should get me through. Still memorising words to songs that were taught while I was travelling last year.

    Have a great weekend everyone.
It’s all about mind control, food is not a reward if it is making us fat and unhappy. Think healthy and fit. (That’s actually quite hard at the moment, bad back, ankle and throat, but I am trying) at least the sun is shining today.

Jojo…hope you soon get your voice back so that you can at least join in a bit. Remember to look after yourself too….often when we are engrossed in supporting others we neglect ourselves.

    Amazon…enjoy yourself, it sounds exciting!

Im certainly not a stranger to exercise, I used to run regularly although stopped about 6 months ago when my partner was forced to stop due to an injury. I was going to get my bike out and do some leisurely cycling alongside walking and also add a bit of resistant work with weights. I know the benefits of exercise etc but I was just a bit confused about some of the threads on this site which take a different view!
I think I will just go with what I know and get on with it!

Yesterday was supposed to be a full fast but then I downgraded it to a 400cal day but in truth it was probably more than that but definitely not TDEE. Tonight I am out meeting friends in a pub, but at least Im driving! I had my dinner at about 6pm last night so I may not eat until I get to the pub about 6ish and then choose carefully.
I need to be careful that I dont end up with days of low cal eating rather than the 5:2 as I know its the fasting part teamed with normal eating that gives you the health benefits and weight loss without your body going into starvation mode!

Right enough rambling….have a good day everyone and be mindful!

    Kay

    Jo,

the dress is a paisley type print in royal blue, turquoise and white. I have a fine knit off white bolero that I plan to wear with it and I happen to own a pair of white and turquoise sandals that I bought to go with another outfit.

    Enjoy the concert.

Kay, exercise is excellent for cardio vascular health, fitness, flexibiliy and toning but don’t rely on it to aid weight loss because it takes an awful lot of exercise to burn up sufficient calories (3700) to lose 1lb.
I really enjoy exercising and when I don’t do any for a few days I really notice the difference in how my body feels.

I am baking some bread. It is the first time in ages that I’ve done so but I feel the need for an egg sarnie and if I don’t have one, experience tells me I’ll eat everything in sight 😫

You’ll look very glam, Amazon! Enjoy. ☺ P

All exercise does for me is make me really hungry which I think is the glucose being burned away and the muscles wanting more (or something like that). I used to go to a local gym and spend hours pounding away on various machines, then I’d be so hungry and with having no willpower I’d end up buying a couple of takeout pizzas or a big curry meal on the way home. That’s my excuse for not doing any anyway!

    Good Morning,
I just told my hubby that checking on Jojo’s group it’s like going to AA. It’s a must.
Jo looking forward for your email! I wouldn’t mind to post my info here but from time to time I unpleasant people showing up.
Our dinner last night was wonderful! He used to work for UBS, Denmark who’s been all over the world and finally met a beautiful woman from Panama (Pastry Chef) and settled here in the US. I don’t have to tell you what was the topic last night.
I never bake anything! My passion fruit cheese cake was a success … Half is on the fridge and I need someone to feed πŸ™‚
Ancestry, stock tips… Always learning something πŸ™‚
Amazon, Nama, RT – I know nothing about sports …. I wish I would follow anything
Busy today! I finally found a tenant from one of our empty rental. Going now to paint and clean up.
I take fish and fish 😍
    See you later πŸ’‹

Jim, we all have a willpower muscle, we just need to want to exercise it along with the rest of our body. And we won’t succeed in losing weight and keeping it off without doing so.
Everyone should exercise (if they are physically able) as it is beneficial in so many ways. Feeling hungry afterwards is excellent as you can then use your willpower muscle which will strengthen it and allow you to use it more often, and give your body a chance to use some of your fat stores as energy.

Good to see you JoJo, sorry about your hard week. Bravo for not rewarding your troubles with lots of treats n weight gain. Hope that voice comes. Glad to see your children have good positions.

Amazon! So excited for you, we will look for the royal blue paisley dress. 😊

Happy, you are inspiring me to visit England to see these ancestral paths. So funny i lived all over the Continent but never spent any time in the UK, only London once.

BTW, anyone see Donald Trump’s press conference in Scottlsnd? How is it possible thst one man can be such an uninformed blockhead and have so much money n power? I cant wait to watch Hillary (my fellow alum) clobber him in the debates. It will be so cathartic.

My hubby finally arrived at 1am, storms up north delayed him. We shall have s nice NF day as he fasted while he was away. I stocked the fridge with cleaned and cut Veg, fruit, Vinegar Cole Slaw (nama n HB) , cooked Mung Beans, snd have plenty of the lentil oatmeal muffins. It should make for a healthy n high fiber NFD.

    Hi all,
Re exercise – apart from swimming and walking I am allergic to exercise. And I agree NearlySlim, it makes me ravenous too! Amazon I love that you enjoy your workouts so much, sometimes I envy you. But I have never, ever enjoyed exercise and at 63, doubt I ever will. Intellectually, I know how good for me it is, but I still hate it! Would much rather read a book! I think that losing so much weight with 5:2 has improved my health significantly, so am prepared to risk it not doing much exercise. I suppose swimming laps 3 times a week is better than nothing and I am sure I get some unstructured exercise just gardening etc, but as far as anything more, you can count me out. Its just not worth all the guilt I get if I don’t follow through! All the willpower in the world is no good if you are miserable doing it. I am happy just to eat less!

Just home from a delightful family meal at a lovely Polish restaurant. Polish dumplings, baked polish cheesecake and some warm mulled wine – really hearty stuff! This place specializes in Polish vodka – over 100 imported varieties, luckily I was the designated driver, though I was tempted to try the Green Fairy (absinthe) – back to the coleslaw tomorrow!

Slim our posts crossed – I think the blockhead got where he is because of business smarts and just being a plain bully. I despair for the US if he actually gets into power. He will probably just storm off like an angry child if Hillary outwits him.

Nama, what is doing laps in a pool three times per week if it isn’t exercise? πŸ˜‰
I am lucky that I enjoy the gym and I know that it isn’t for everyone, but we all find a way to get some for example Bay who is trying to turn floor scrubbing into an Olympic sport……..

My comment to NSJ was more about exercising willpower than anything else but as he used to work out there is no reason why he can’t do it again.

I love traditional baked Polish cheesecake and many years ago used to buy it regularly from a deli near where I had a Saturday job.

I’ve only ever been to Australia December/January and it comes as a surprise to me every time any of you SHers mention winter or hearty warming food because in my mind it is forever summer Down Under πŸ™‚

SlimnH, never underestimate the power of stupidity and ignorance in the US. I hope she wipes the floor with him and then flushes him. As they say, “From your mouth to G-d’s ear.”

    Oh, forgot my biggest happening.

Im hoasting a Radio show here in Austin one saturday a month..i mention it because i have an old tape from childhood performing (mom rewarded my pushing through stage fright with treats after). So i tend to finish a show n then…treats for Slim!

So today, after the show, im going to begin practice being mindful of these old feelings. Really get in touch with the parts of it, and feel into it all. Then breath and give the girl what she really needs. Wish me luck!

    Good Luck Slim!
Oh Amazon, surely Bay deserves a gold medal on the podium for her floor scrubbing! She must have the cleanest floors in Australia. I take your point re swimming, but my funny brain does not feel like it is exercise as I enjoy it so much! I obviously have some unresolved issues with exercise, ie I need to hate it if it is to be valid!!
Yes, we do get winter here, the ranges half an hour from me in South East Melbourne had snow this week.
The more northern parts of the country have lots of winter sunshine, but the nights can still be freezing. Do you have the expression “Grey Nomads”? Many retired Aussies that live in the cooler Southern states pack up and head north every winter, usually towing a caravan.

No, we have Silver Surfers, not that many of them have ever set eyes on a surfboard, who travel elsewhere in our winter. I guess I’m one………

    Snowbirds here.

    Oh brother!

You all are not gonna believe who i have to interview today. A conspiracy theory guy who believes the UK vote finally outpaced the government’s ballot rigging. Jeesh! Not looking forward to this. πŸ˜” Now ill want double biscuits after.

    Good luck with that Slimn!!

Like Nama says she doesn’t associate swimming with exercise, I’m the same in that I don’t associate going for a ride on my bicycle every couple of days with exercise. To me running on a treadmill or using a cross trainer is exercise, walking in the fells or cycling to the sea and back isn’t exercise, it’s fun. Maybe it’s because the exercise I did in the gym was never much fun, it was hard and I didn’t enjoy it.

I find swimming really relaxing and use it as a cool down after the gym. And I love walking and do it for pleasure more than exercise. I started at the gym after losing some weight as I was so unfit and hadn’t been doing much of anything for a while and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I see it as a challenge on the road to getting as fit as I can possibly be but I can understand why some don’t like it.

I’ve done a fair amount of reading regarding exercise and the consensus is 30 minutes of cardio vascular five times per week so anything that raises the breathing rate and keeps it there such as cycling or brisk walking is perfect as is swimming which IMO is underrated as it also strengthens muscles and improves flexibility without putting stress on the joints.

I’ve made my vinegar slaw – yum- will def be a NFD food until I tire of it. Nama m HB, Do you all use sugar in yours or replace it or leave it? Or anyone with ideas.

I’ve never used sugar or vinegar when making coleslaw. I dress it with natural yoghurt and lemon juice.

Interesting thoughts on what constitutes ‘exercise’ or not!

It seems many people are exerting themselves in different ways but don’t consider it exercise. Interesting. Is it fair to say we only think of it as exercise if it’s physical activity we don’t really enjoy?!

    Hi Happy,

That is what Nama was alluding to I think…..
I always thought exercise was not something to be enjoyed but I realise now it was due to the fact that when I was at school only those who were good at anything were encouraged by the PE teacher and the others ignored which is hardly an example of what good teaching is about. As a result I hated the thought of exercise for many years and studioulsy avoided it unless going out and dancing all night can be included πŸ˜‰
When I had my allotment I think I got plenty of exercise but didn’t see it as such.

I agree that many think of it as not enjoyable and I am really pleased to have discovered that there was an inner gym junkie lurking under all that flab and now I’ve got rid of most of it said junkie has surfaced. I still can’t believe how much I enjoy it and the harder I work and the more cream crackered I am the better.

    Maybe I’m a masochist 😲😲

    Amazon,

I agree totally re the more cream crackered the better! But I think you have to get to a certain level of fitness before that kicks in?

I’m pretty fit now and love that feeling of having worked my muscles. But my muscles are used to regular exertion and recover quickly. When you’re not very fit it hurts, your muscles are slower to repair and you’re put off hurting yourself again…,

On the subject of fitness… I just managed the sit stand test πŸ˜€ Once, Subsequent and conscious attempts have failed ☹️

    Don’t worry about it, I’m sure it’s overrated πŸ˜‰

I’m drinking red wine and watching the fabulous Adele who has taken Glastonbury by storm. She likes a good swear πŸ˜„

I had terrible problems with pain, stiffness and cramps when I first started at the gym and it took me months to get to grips with it, but my body recovers much faster now but I always do 10 minutes of stretching after working out or I’m in trouble.

Amazon, I’m similarly enjoying a glass or two of red wine and Adele. Sings like an angel, swears like a fish wife πŸ˜€

    I love her!
