  • He is Home . very tired and weak but so relaxed looking . He was sitting in a chair for 5 hours before he got home . He is in bed and purring like a kitten . So pleased to have my best pal home . We have all the time in the world now for him to improve day by day .Thank you all so much for all the support .

    Wee xx

Wee, fantastic news! You can both relax now!

I’d love to think that when I’m you’re age I’d enjoy the amazing relationship you clearly have…sadly my OH is already a grumpy old git… Maybe he’ll mature like a fine wine 😀

Great to see some fresh faces, but I’m already lost about how quidditch might work in the real world! Does it involve zip wires/ bungies?!

I didn’t fast on Thursday in the end. Despite what felt like a binge on Wednesday, the scales were kind on Thursday 😀

Interesting reading about possible food intolerances. I notice when I go for a run sometimes after carbs/ sugar that I get a bit of belly ache which extends down my right thigh. Is it ‘intolerance’ or more like IBS? Or is that the same thing anyway?!

Jo, I never doubted that you were environmentally responsible, but a lot of people aren’t. Hopefully some people will be a little better informed now 😀

    Wee,
So happy your best pal is home recovering and in his own bed. My hubby and i are best pals and i know how i would feel to get him back home. ❤️

HappyNow it was Theatre Camp so all was acting…im afraid thats as sporty as my kids get. Luckily they are little vegan skin n bones…they have plenty of strength and energy, just two left feet.

    Enjoy Your Weekend Team.

    Peace RT

Wee, so glad you have your best pal back where he should be. Hope all goes well from here on in!!
Just been listening to the radio and I can’t believe what a bad week it’s been both here in the UK and in Orlando. Feel so sad for all the poor people affected. It makes my own problems seem so insignificant.
On a lighter note, it’s Paul McCartney’s birthday, so Happy Birthday to my idol!!!
    Wilbersnanna.

Damn it, I just lost my post.

    Quick summary
Welcome returnee posters, great to hear from you all.
Quiddich! Are we in another reality ? Harry Potter World. Seriously- whatever gets those kids running around is good with me. Jet packs are coming closer to reality each year. Will I ever say ‘just jetting off to bowls’ ?

Wee- great that Jim is home but be careful of your own health, nursing is tiring.
Bowls- on a winning streak, all is well, we even went into another reality by having salad for our post match game last night, it wasn’t popular but any step away from fried food alternatives might help stem the death rate amongst bowlers. Heart attacks are very common, they really underestimate the role if fried stodgy, sugary food because they see themselves as ‘active bowls players’.

My son and are are off for a long walk with the dogs today. He will tell me all about his London life and I will nag him to eat healthily, avoid his constant ‘take away’ lifestyle.
Digging out my bike today, needs work but I am determined to use it this summer.

Life is good, food doesn’t have to be our only pleasure, have fun!

RT- are you eating again! How do you feel?

    Good Morning,
Jim I can imagine the feeling of being back to your own home. Nothing like home🙏
Yesterday I had a post also and just like that gone … I was in a hurry.

Amazing way to break a Fast! Salmon, fat and eggs – The Best and you didn’t die RT.

Congratulations TO ME – entertained last night, did a beautiful dinner and the BIG NEWS is …. Didn’t exceed fermented grape juice intake.

Gorgeous weather here! Enjoy your weekend wherever you are.
    💖

    Good Morning all!

I must say that checking in here frequently is really keeping me focused, I hope you all can bare so many posts. Children can make me forget I ever had a goal of my own, so thank you for receiving me and reminding me I have my own body to attend to.

Went to Hogwarts last evening to see the final performances and theatrical sportiness, and I have to say, little Elliot, the youngest in the theatre camp by many years, and tiny next to very big boys and girls, stole the show!!! . There is a star in her sign. My sweet Calvin, chewed his hair and forgot his lines but died a wonderful death after being bit by a snake as Sirius.

So what that means really, is my freedom is over and I have children by my side every minute from now until end of August.

Congratulations RT on 5 days. I imagine you feel renewed but relieved.

Well done HealthCoachB, staying in limits of fermented juice whilst having a dinner party is beyond well done.

Jojo has inspired me to get my bike out from the back of the garage and dust it off! I might ride to coffee shop tomorrow at 7am b4 it gets too hot!

I am supposed to fast today but my hubby, David and I have a babysitter for the first time in over 2 years and we are going to explore Austin on our own. So we decided to start fasting yesterday after 2pm and we will fast today until 2pm…it won’t be as strong a couple days, but we don’t often have a chance to explore food without children’s picky tastes holding us back.

    Happy day All!

    Afternoon all,

Wee, I’m so pleased that everything went well and Jim is now continuing his recovery at home. As Jo said, nursing can be tiring so remember to look after yourself too.
My very best wishes to both of you XXX

Welcome to all the new names 🙂
If you are just starting out I would recommend reading the book and sticking with basic 5:2 until your body gets used to fasting and then you can start thinking about making your food choices healthier. However, I do agree with Purple’s advice regarding using goal weight TDEE as it might be tough at first but it makes things much easier long term.
No food is forbidden whatever some posters might say but it is a good idea to avoid eating much in the way of processed carbs and sugar. It takes a long time to develop bad eating habits and gain a lot of weight and it takes a while to change those habits and lose it.
There is no reason why anyone should give up potatoes, bread or pasta but it needs to become a much smaller proportion of what is on your plate.
The good news is is works.

I’ve had a lovely week in Cornwall. The flat we rented was perfect with a fabulous view of the beach. The weather wasn’t perfect but we had a good amount of sunshine and the showers were never bad enough or lasted long enough to stop us doing anything.
I ate at lunchtime and in the evening every day with a couple of mid afternoon ice creams 😉
Treats such as cream teas were eaten as brunch and we ate fish and/or seafood every evening. The restaurants everywhere we went were of a high standard and I ate some delicious dinners with lovely fresh fish and seafood cooked simply and well. Most of them also afforded beautiful views of the beach, the cliffs or the countryside 😎
Yesterday evening we booked a table at a really nice fish restaurant overlooking the harbour and I treated myself to lobster which was fabulous and about half the price I would have paid in London 😆

We did a huge amount of walking, coastal paths, beaches, towns, harbours, gardens etc. It feels like I’ve been away much longer as we did so much and visited so many places.

It is nice to be home though as I missed my memory foam mattress 😉

    Amazon!
So wonderfully jealous reading about your holiday!

Welcome home Amazon. You chose a sensible travel eating approach. Well done!
I’m SO envious. Our trip to Cornwall last year was marred by torrential rain. We feel we MUST go back 😉 (well, I keep hinting).
Also wise choice, Slimn. The whole beauty of this eating regime is the flexibility. Life comes first! I hope you enjoyed your outing. P 😊

    Amazon,

Great to hear that you had a good break in Cornwall.

And good to have you back, the thread just isn’t right without your daily reports!

    Slim,

Thanks for clarifying quidditch… You’re clearly a very proud Mum!

I’m glad you had a good week, Amazon. I thought of you a number of times in the week as we had our mixed bouts of weather! But a better week than the forecasts really, at least in Devon.

Hurrah for Amazon, I don’t have to give up potatoes, bread and pasta…oh, smaller portions though. Bummer! You mention the 5:2, is it okay on the 6:1?

Amazon, you are right to remind us that 5:2 doesn’t restrict foods on nonF days. Many of us here are mixing our dieting systems, something which 5:2 lends itself to doing. Also it helps to intensify things a bit if there’s a plateau.

Nothing is “forbidden”, James, but work out how you respond to different foods.
Carbs in the mornings tend to build hunger. Non starchy foods are far more satiating, don’t create insulin spikes, (insulin causes fat storage) and you can eat mountains of them. Full fat products also satiate. Eat them and enjoy.
If we deprive ourselves totally of foods we love, we would be unlikely to sustain this way of living. But eating inappropriate foods regularly will not give you the health benefits you are seeking. Learn balance.
6:1 may sound a good option, but if you are nowhere near your goal weight, it will take a very long time to reach maintenance, especially if you indulge regularly in what should be “sometimes foods”.(thanks Cookie)
We still do 2 fasts a week after more than 3 years, as the twice weekly fasting is a great reset of appetite and insulin levels.
It is all trial and error. We learn as we go, but it really does work!! ☺ P

    Hey Everyone!
Hilarious day of mishaps turned out to be perfect!

Our 2pm – 2pm fast wotked great, we actually waited until 3pm snd ate at a wonderful Interior Mexican restaurant. Very Fancy and food kids would never eat. 😉 We found a little English bakery nextdoor and had a tiny pie…(strawberry ruhbarb!)

But then we just started fasting again with no problem. I was satisfied even ’til now! We wont break the fast until tomorrow when we go camping with the kids at 3/4pm for fathers day. Then back to our normal schedule.

    Wonderfully flexible, isn’t it, Slimn?
It’s called mindful eating….enjoy food, but with restraint (she says as she wipes the crumbs of a homemade coconut slice off her cheeks 😉)
No breakfast, homemade veg soup, then a tiny treat. Yum. Fast tomorrow. 😆P

    Hi Slim,
Congratulations on adapting fasting to your new healthier lifestyle! I think ‘mindful eating’ is the best term, something many of us had not mastered previously!

Oh Purple, I cant believe that crossed post, spooky!

    On a wave-length, mate 😉
I can’t believe you haven’t mastered mindful eating, Nama. ☺☺

I was referring to past days Purple!!

    Yep. Got it 😉😉😉
    You are an expert! !

    Morning/evening all,

Sunshine this morning in London 😎

Purple, I’ve come home with no regrets about what I ate or drank. I was the driver so alcohol was limited to one drink if we were eating far from home and although we had wine and G&T in the fridge we rarely had more than one more when we got home. Me and my friend talked about days gone by whe we would have had drinks/cocktails before dinner, at least two bottles of wine and maybe something with our coffee after eating three courses plus the contents of a bread basket 😮

There were only two occasions when I saw a dessert on the menu that I really wanted AND felt able to eat anything else. Most restaurants and pubs had excellent fish and seafood menus but the desserts were often very predictable and nothing we couldn’t get anywhere else so it was easy to say no thanks.

Last Sunday we went to the Eden project and had coffee on arrival and both succumbed to a scone with jam and clotted cream. We were so full that we didn’t need anything else until dinner apart from an obligatory ice cream whilst strolling around Mevagissey harbour in the sunshine 😉
My friend is naturally slim and has never had issues with her weight so it was very easy for me to resist temptation and not eat unless I was genuinely hungry (ice cream excepted)

I need to be able to do that all of the time whoever I’m with and especially when I’m home alone and there is no-one to see what I’m eating so that is my next goal.

I took my little pedometer with me and wore it every day and we averaged 17000 steps per day and a couple of days were 23000 so although there were no trips to the gym there was plenty of exercise taken.

After a week of fish I’m looking forward to some meat for dinner today. I’ve marinaded some lamb from the freezer in an Indian style yoghurt concoction and am looking forward to it but I need to go out and find some fresh vegetables to have with it as the cupboard is bare.

I have a month at home before my next little jaunt which is to Herefordshire, so I am back into B2B fasting from tomorrow in order to shift a few more lbs before then. The cupboard is bare so there is nothing interesting to snack on and I intend to keep it that way.

Have a good one everybody 😜

You are a pro at this wol now Amazon.
The Eden Project is terrific, isn’t it? Did you also see the Lost Gardens of Helligan? Amazing. Cornwall is a great holiday destination and plenty of healthy food options. Glad you had a good break.
Seared tuna steaks and roast veg and farro for us tonight.
It’s been pouring rain all day, but I’ve cracked the exercise by enlarging the font on my Kindle, placing it on a couch back and jogging on the carpet in socks. 20 minutes reading and 3 kilometres of jogging, all at once!! ☺P

PVE, what a brilliant idea! And so easy to do without extra stuff.

This is what it’s all about, isn’t Apricot? Sharing our discoveries as we navigate this new approach to life. ☺ P

Yep, it’s amazing how much I’ve learned from people here. And also occasional forays to the BSD forum, where they tend to focus more specifically on blood sugars, insulin etc, given that more are Type2D. One issue there, I think, is maintenance, as the 800 cals / low carb daily thing is not a way of life, so the latter still has to be learned, so the potential to return to overweight with poor bloods is high. 5:2 can be learned while the motivation is there, so it remains (hopefully). So they could learn from here, and what we can potentially take from there are to be a bit more relaxed about so called failure (ie 510 cals!), and the benefits of the Mediterranean diet as outlined there as a long term eating plan.

Chatting here defo keeps me going.

    Ditto Apricot.
We were at one of Michael’s launches for the BSD. I found it interesting, but as my OH reversed his Type2D, going from insulin injecting to no drugs, using 5:2, I can’t quite see the point of the complexity of the BSD. Living on 5:2 for over 3 years, and having OH giving daily feedback on his bloodsugar tests, we naturally ended up basically eating a Mediterranean diet. The one thing I did take from the BSD launch was that, as a maintainer, I don’t need to stress if I end up with up to 800 cals on a fast day occasionally. Better to aim low, but still within acceptable. P

That’s remarkable about your OH. I suspect that it (BSD) was related also to using the outline of Dr Roy Taylor’s diet for T2D in a non-clinical setting.

Hi all. Weighed myself this morning and I am 21st 7lbs, down from 21st 11lbs last Sunday so a good first week. Going for the usual Sunday Lunch at our new ‘local’ which is about 11 miles away but serves excellent main course with half a chicken and large portions of six types of vegetables. They also have the biggest prawn cocktail I have ever seen, so it’s worth going just for that.

I am NOT going to have a pudding though. I usually have two chocolate coated waffles with two scoops of ice cream, two squirts of double cream, two vanilla & chocolate biscuit tube things, all covered with slices of strawberry & banana and drizzled with chocolate & toffee sauces. Instead I am going to sit there and watch my friend eat his or go and sit in the garden and wait for him to finish. I might ask the chef if he can do me a bowl of fruit with single cream.

FD tomorrow mainly because of Sunday Lunch today, though I am thinking of changing my FD to Saturday and have the Sunday Lunch as the breaking of the fast from Friday tea, which would be a fast of approximately 42 hours instead of the 37 hours on a Monday.

Would the extra 5 hours make any difference do you think? Would it be dangerous to break the fast with such a large meal? Would it be worth doing Saturday and Monday as FD’s with Sunday Lunch in the middle or better to do say Monday & Tuesday as FD’s instead?

I think the BSD is a very useful starting point for those who’ve never attempted to change their diets and don’t know where to start. The variety is probably there in order to show that a healthier diet isn’t boring as there is a huge variety of foods that can be eaten.
I agree that for those of us with more experience of changing our eating habits it is unnecessary. As for eating 800 on a FD occasionally, c’est la vie 😉

I visited the Eden project they year after it opened and Heligan the year it opened so it was wonderful to return after such a long time. My friend hadn’t been to Heligan before and she loved it. Both places are more developed and of course the planting has matured and changed the landscape further. We really enjoyed both places.
There is so much to see in Cornwall but we had an idea of what we wanted to do, with a few options under the “if we have time” heading. We went to Mevagissey, Padstow, Penzance, Bude where we met up with my old flatmte who both of us used to work with, Boscastle, the Minack theatre, various beaches and coves, Lanhydrock House which is another favourite of mine, which is a huge old stately home with lovely gardens and a church and lots of meadowland surrounding it.
On Friday my friend suggested that we stayed nearer to home as she thought I should have a day off from driving so we did a short drive to Watergste Bay where we got a bit damp walking along the beach in the rain 😆 and then spent the day wandering in and around Newquay which was lovely.

Jim, I think you should do 2 fast days per week and it makes no difference when you do them, just work out which is more convenient for you. Sunday lunch sounds good, but you don’t need dessert if you are eating half a chicken and six vegetables and I guess you’ll be having a drink.

Interestingly Amazon, Newquay reminded us of our own New South Wales coast! P

Well done Nearly, great first week to start. You will want that pudding today, but I promise within months it will lose its allure. Your tastes WILL change. You will prefer healthier stuff and not want to ‘waste’ calories on sugary stuff. Re actual fasting days, best if you try different options and figure out what suits you. Regulars on here refer to something being ‘doable’ ie if the behaviour is manageable, it will easily become a new habit. Only you can decide what is doable for your lifestyle. The days you fast don’t really matter, as long as you fast twice a week and stay within TDEE the other days, the weight will come off.

The North coast of Cornwall from St Ives up to Padstow is my favourite piece of coastline anywhere in the world, and to stay somewhere with a view of some of it was heavenly 😎

We didn’t get to St Ives as we ran out of time so it is top of the list for my next visit.

Lovely to hear about Cornwall Amazon, glad you enjoyed your week so much. We did miss you around here though!!

    Hello,

    Welcome back Amazon!
You really detail your traveling so well. This world of us is so beautiful. The advantages of being in Europe is if you catch a trein, which we don’t have a good system, you can be at a different place. Well… It’s makes life interesting when we don’t have what we wish all the time.

As Nana said as we keep going and see the pounds leaving us the tendency is to don’t blow things up as motivation and be a little choosy.

The environment it’s another think! I myself dislike any buffet restaurant. I just want to taste everything available but my OH is in heaven. Also I have a very skinny girlfriend and when I am with her I don’t eat much and the other girlfriend drinks too much… No know the rest of that story LOL. Mindful and controlled eating it’s a skill that needs practice, practice and practice..

Purple when you say your husband reversed diabetes I wish I would send the two to leave with my mother other with you 😘

Another beautiful day in paradise! Happy fasting to the ones waking up down under.
    Be good you 💖

PVE – I mean live with my Mother or the other way around.
Should read and and correct my autocorrect before hitting the submit button 🙏

    Hello All,
Beautiful morning here but getting a tad windy now.
My son is here and has been cooking, it’s great and makes a change. He even made hollandaise sauce on asparagus with fish and new potatoes for dinner last night. Very healthy and no pudding.
SlimJim- you will be living up to your ‘handle’ in no time. If you must have a pudding of fruit, try it with natural yogurt not cream.
My so. Cooked a fry up today for his Dad, Fathers Day. (Seriously! Is none in my family listening to me about healthy eating). I left them to it to play bowls. My preferred special breakfast is scrambled egg with smoked salmon, no bread. Yummy!
Amazon- glad you had a good and very busy holiday, so much walking, I am headed to St Ives in two weeks, can’t wait. I took my daughter and her friend to the Eden Project many years ago but we didn’t do the lost gardens. Looking forward to one cream tea but otherwise fish and veg for me. I think I will take some salad stuff with me in a cool box, heck of a drive from here, leaving 5 am.
Off to walk the dogs now before some serious gardening.

    Good Morning Fast Friends!

I love all the chatting today…last Sunday when I was fasting, all I could hear were crickets. I’ve obviously found a good thread for me! I love hearing about European holidays. I’m taking notes for when the kids are older and we hit the lottery. 🙂

I joined the American thread for when you all are sleeping and I need to spend 15 minutes letting my blood sugar and fasting bio pathways regulate…in other words, I feel like eating anything in front of me…..but I’m getting a little confused about what I’ve said and not said….Haha, maybe that will get better over time as my mind gets sharper from fasting.

SlimJim, blood sugar spikes just as much from a large protein meal as from a small carb meal, so I’d say, in the beginning it might be good to break fasts with a smaller meal, and as your blood sugar gets more youthful from fasting, you can break fasts with larger meals without as much consequence. If you think about it it makes sense…insulin is a storage hormone, so large amounts of protein call for storage as much as large amounts of sugar. In fact, you’d be surprised at the research which shows a large steak spikes insulin much higher than a small pudding. So don’t be lulled into high protein denial. Lol

As some of you may already know, I eat all plant based and get all my protein from plant food so I know pretty much all the science on blood sugar and protein and the myths around high protein and blood sugar. But in general, I think eating low carb is good because it gets us modern folks away from all the processed, high fructose corn syrup packaged foods. Also, it helps a lot of people diagnose wheat intolerance. But now I’m putting on my physician cap and I prefer being a student here so I’ll stop unless asked a direct question, like Jim’s.

Off to Father’s Day camping, fasting until about 3pm again, but camping food is gonna be cool veggies, salads n fruit since we do not want to make a fire in 100 degree weather!

    PS

Loved the “mindful eating” CCCC, that’s Cosmic Consciousness Coincidence Center,
    Purple and Nama!

And I keep showing my mother and aunts your posts about reversing Type 2 D, keep it coming! So inspiring!

Jo, healthy food is abundant in Cornwall everywhere you look. All the places I had cream teas for lunch sold some delicious looking lunches including salads and vegetarian and vegan foods were on offer in the majority of places. Lots of the little kiosks that sell seafood also have salad bars for lunch on the go so you won’t have a problem finding what you want. It certainly made life easier for me 🙂

Think I’ll give Saturday & Monday a go for a week or two, just to see if I can manage two 43 hours fasts back to back with a meal in the middle. If I can’t I’ll probably change to Monday & Thursday like a lot of people seem to do.

    Hello Everyone,
Welcome new fasters. Since I have posted last, my son graduated from college, he had a 25 birthday, went to a wedding, taught two weeks of summer school, celebrated our 28th anniversary, celebrated my husbands 49th birthday. And I am at my goal weight. I have been reading everyone’s posts and promise to contribute more soon. Everyone give yourself a pat on the back, because this wol is different mindset of the world and we are pioneers of the new nutritional future. I am happy to be with you.

    Wow Sarah103-Great work

    Hi Slimn
    I don’t think I can live with your mother….mine was enough! 😉
Buy her a copy of Dr Jason Fung’s The Obesity Code and get onto his blog. The cure for diabetes is not insulin, it is fasting. Imagine how many people around the world could be saved if this simple advice was followed. Good luck educating her. P

Happy winter solstice southern hemisphereites. Keep warm….the days will get longer from here on! Woohoo! P

Yes, it’s always good to get over that hump, P. Unseasonably warm weather here at the moment, but Queensland’s storm is on its way. Another FD done, lovely warm soup, or perhaps more correctly described, sludge, for dinner. 🙂

Cold and windy here Barata, but another successful fast done. 😊 P

    Morning/evening all

Wet, wet, wet here today, it started yesterday evening and is yet to stop.
FD for me and I’ve spent the morning cleaning. I’m waiting for the kitchen floor to dry so I can make some coffee before tackling the ironing 😬
I’m hoping it clears up this afternoon so I can go out for a walk but it doesn’t look too promising. I want to keep as busy as possible as the first FD after a week of carbs every day is always difficult but I’m determined to get through it.

Have a good one everybody 😜
