  • Hi Jo,

I think “nothing to lose…” has made a very valid point regarding putting newbies off as some of the posts on this forum are rather OTT, and worry me occasionally.
You are absolutely right that on this thread the majority of us are telling our experiences, successes, failures and talking about the latest book/research study/supposed super food etc sharing the troubles and joys of our lives and not recommending anything unless specifically asked for advice. Having said that it is important that eveyone who posts on this forum bears in mind that there are numerous approaches to IF and phrases like “you must never eat (insert food of choice)” are unacceptable IMHO and we must all do what works for us.

Quite frankly I’ve given up caring if I’m in ketosis or not as I’ve lost nearly five stones so it isn’t worth fretting over πŸ˜‰

As Purple has said more than once, it is great that we can have a lively and robust discussion regarding different methods. Long may it continue πŸ™‚

I’ve been to the softplay room at the local garden centre with my niece and 9 month old great nephew. He had a wonderful time and after several failures succeeded in crawling up the slide πŸ˜… so his Mum had to go up after him. It is a lovely hot and sunny day and we were hoping to go to the park afterour tea and cake but a sleepless night due to teething put paid to that as both Mum and child were a bit frazzled. He fell asleep in the car before it had left the car park so at least he’s getting some rest. I’ll never understand why teething needs to be painful πŸ˜•

    Hi RT,

Thanks, I always look forward to the weekend giggle πŸ™‚

sorry I am so late . Had visitors since tea time …
Mr Ypanis the surgeon phoned me himself at 6 o’clock said it had been a difficult op ( we had expected that) he said Jim had lost a lot of blood and he was now in intensive care . he had some kind of thing breathing for him and still had the cannula in his neck . I asked if I could please go see him for 5 mins and I wouldn’t waken him . OK Kate and Kayleigh took me up . When we got in the nurse (only for him) said they had taken him off it and he was doing so well she was very surprised . He just had a wee mask to breathe . the cannula still there . He was very white but so happy . The anaesthetist came in and said “well Jim you are doing great pal . didn’t expect you to be with us so soon . I am so so so happy . thank you all for the support . xx

Excellent news Wee. Hugs for both of you. Xx πŸ™…πŸ™…

    Lovely news, Wee. 🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺

Good news Wee! Since we haven’t heard from you I was about to give a phone call πŸ˜‚

Fantastic to read of this Weemam

“The Force Is Strong with This One”

Jo and Amazon, thanks for the replies. I suppose it was unfortunate that the “straw that broke the camel’s back” post for me was on this thread whereas that type of post is more prevalent elsewhere on the forum. This thread is, in the vast majority, populated by level-headed and supportive types and I have enjoyed reading it. Jo, I gatecrashed as I am not doing your challenge so will bow out now! Just to say

Amazon, 5 st, Wow! As you say who cares if ketosis played a part of not? We can be sure that huge determination and willpower did. Congratulations, you are an inspiration.

Hi everyone and welcome to Nothing to Lose (if you’re still here) – I’m new here too – from Belfast unfortunately, not Brazil as mentioned earlier – I wish! Sunshine, lovely people and surroundings to match would be very nice : ) I know everywhere else in the world has it’s difficulties though, and happily at this stage in life I’ve stopped believing that a change of location / job etc will resolve all of my lifes’ problems.

Anyway, keeping it real….I’m tempted to say that I’ve been pretty ‘good’ this week. However, I think it’s important for me to stop making moral-type judgements on myself and others because it’s so negative. In reality, I’ve done really well. I haven’t had any sugar in the form of refined substance and that’s a huge deal for me. I’ve also lost another 1lb apparently, although I’m not convinced it’s ‘solid’ loss, so to speak. We’ll see. I’m trying to take the long term view for a change in that the past has been littered with fast and furious attempts to do ridiculous things like ‘lose a stone in a week’ or something equally bonkers and doomed to failure! I’ve a holiday coming up in 3 weeks – the first with my partner – and just wish I’d started sooner on this more sensible and achievable approach. I don’t know about anyone else, male or female, but I find I’m looking at pictures and clothes in the shops and imagining my self on the beach all slim and tanned. Then back to reality with a bump. Here I am, a somewhat wobbly-bottomed, pale and patchy looking chick with the tired old clock of a 53 year old woman (on HRT since I was 41, as it happens)! BUT, I have this forum and so far it’s been immensely useful. There are so many words of wisdom, shared stories of past and present struggles and even room for differing opinions and ideas that I always find something to keep me feeling positive about this new way of life.

I am finding it tough at times though, mainly because my work load is very heavy at the moment so there isn’t a lot of time to spend preparing nutritious meals and time on the planning. Once June is over it’ll be easier. In the meantime I’m ‘just’ (minimizing again) going to avoid all processed sugar, bread and I suppose processed foods generally. And keep coming here, of course.

Well, best be off, back to the grind : )
Take care everyone and have a good day / evening wherever you are in this amazing world of ours!
    Aine
PS Weemam, thinking of you lots and sending blessings your way. It’s great news about your husband and just be sure to look after yourself. Emotions are tiring, good or not-so-good, and fatigue is sometimes difficult to battle on a healthy lifestyle.

    Morning/evening all,

Wee, so pleased that the operation is done and that Jim is on the road to recovery. Let’s hope all goes smoothly and you’ll have him home again before you know it. I would hazard a guess that your 5 minutes with him yesterday did you both a power of good. Lots of love X

Aine, I’m not criticising but pointing out something that we are all guilty of sometimes which is being too harsh on ourselves. Maybe you should read your own post. You started off by telling us that you are not going to make moral type judgements about yourself and then proceeded to make one about how (you think) you’ll look on the beach. Are you going to go to the beach to pose or are you going to relax and enjoy yourself? You say you are going on holiday with your partner who obviously loves you as you are, so forget about everything and everyone else and enjoy your first holiday together πŸ™‚

NTL, there are many on here who’ve lost more weight than me and that included PVE who has been successfully maintaining for (?) 2 years so there is inspiration all around. When I first started this WOL I didn’t know that this website existed and I just did 5:2, 500 calories twice a week and was mindful of what I ate on the other 5 days. I lost three stones over 7 months which included a 1 week and a 3 week break for holidays. After the 1 week break I had gained a couple of pounds which disappeared again very quickly and on the 3 week holiday I didn’t gain anything. I then went on a very long holiday which resulted in abandoning 5:2 for 8 months and gaining 18lbs. It wasn’t until I decided to start again that I found the website and this thread. I like to think I would have succeeded without it but in truth I would have failed as the support, tips and encouragement has been fabulous and helped me to keep on trying through difficult times. I’ve also made new friends.

I’m spending the day at home, I like to leave the flat clean and tidy when I go away so some chores are in order and then there is a small matter of packing. When I weighed16 st it was easy to chuck the two pairs of baggy elasticated waist trousers, one skirt and several voluminous tops into the suitcase but now I have a wardrobe full of things that fit decisions need to be made. The first decision is to use my smallest suitcase…….. πŸ˜„

Time to get started on those chores

Have a good one everybody 😜

Good morning all from a very happy person . I got in to see Jim for a wee while last night . He was as white as a pint of milk and looked really poorly BUT he had the biggest smile because he had come through it all . They were amazed with him and the anaesthetist couldn’t believe how well he was doing . I said ” he is pretty fit for an auld git ” and we all laughed . He has a way to go but that is fine . I called this morning and they said he has a few wee niggles here and there and that is normal . THey managed to do the AAA and the one in the groin too . I told him I was going to buy him a football at the weekend lol . Thank you all so so much for all the support you have given us . It has meant a lot especially as it has NOTHING to do wit 5.2 xxxxxxxxx

PS … I have been really really good and DID NOT dive into a ltr of ice cream πŸ™‚ xx

Oh Wee. I think you can have ice cream now 😊

Saw an ad for Air NZ at the movies. A fellow bought his wife, not just an ice cream, but a whole ice cream van!!!! ☺ If any of you get a chance, there is a fantastic new NZ film: Hunt for the Wilderpeople. It is really worth catching.

Amazon, how wonderful to have a whole wardrobe of gorgeous new clothes. Have a terrific holiday in Cornwall and wear those clothes proudly.

And yes, I started 5:2 over three years ago, lost about 28kg and have been at goal weight for over 2. Mr P lost 33kg and has also reversed his insulin dependent diabetes and has maintained his healthy weight.

Many on this thread have been around a while and of course discuss the finer details of 5:2. Start with basic 5:2 and refine it as you go.
    P

    Good Morning,

The whole purpose of 5:2/Fasting it’s for optimum health. When I hear great stories of losing weight and keeping it off it’s a wonder to me. You know who you are πŸ˜‰ … And besides body I want to believe we are souls πŸ™
Also sharing our struggles and victories it’s part of this great journey. I have no children and moved to the US 21 years ago alone so eventually many friends became family.

I have not back ground in science and sometimes it’s a little challenging but I remind myself to look at the big picture.

Have fun guys! Safe travels, sleep and relax, fast wisely and at your time, eat when hungry and there’s always tomorrow.

Well, that’s all from me folks. It’s a bit too rough and tumble in here for me. You’re obviously a close knit, caring group which is great but it seems newcomers need to fit a certain profile to pass muster. Amazon, you are critical and somewhat harsh. I’ve been working 12 hour days on and off for a few weeks now and finding it tough to keep things straight with 5:2, so if my posts don’t exactly come across as too well thought out there’s a good reason for it.
Anyway, good luck all. I hope you keep strong.

    Hi Aine,
It is such a shame you took offence at Amazon’s advice as she is one of the wisest, as well as one of the kindest contributors across the whole 5:2 forum.
Yes, many of us on here are old mates. But most of us make an effort to welcome newbies. Some of us get a bit lazy because, firstly we can always rely on Jojo or Amazon to do so, and secondly we sometimes get a bit sick of investing effort into people who seem keen at first then within a month or so just vanish into the ether. At least you made your feelings clear.
Please don’t take Amazon’s comments the wrong way, she is always honest and that is precisely what we all need at times. 5:2 is hard at first, especially if really busy with life, but its so worth perservering with. You won’t get into that bikini for long with anything else. Good luck!

Weemam – so glad your husband is doing ok. Celebration time once he is fully recovered.

Aine33 – I am also a newcomer to the group and find it entertaining and interesting to see the articles people send. Maybe as I am a lawyer, I like all the debating going on! We get such a conflict of information and fad diets out there, its hard to stick to something. I for one, will support you. I didn’t manage to fast at all this week, as I am so jet lagged and up at 3am starving! Will start again next week, once my body clock has sorted itself out.

Weather is beautiful here in Vancouver and going to enjoy Italian Day on Sunday with some friends, where supposedly 30,000 people will be attending! Should be some lovely food I am sure, hopefully some of it gluten free!

    Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

Aine33- by the way we all worry about how we look in a bikini, but when you get to the beach and look around you no-one else is perfect! I always tell my Mum this as she struggles with her weight also, but she bought a great swimsuit from M&S with built in tummy flattening. That and a nice colourful cover up and fake tan on her legs – she looks and feels a million dollars! Half of its in the attitude!

I used to work 100 hour weeks, so I know what you mean but having some rivita’s and cup-a-soups in my drawer at work did keep me away from the chocolate bars!

Down at English Bay or Stanley Park, Ali? Lucky you…great combo, Vancouver in summer and Italian food☺
With jetlag, just listen carefully to your body. If you are really hungry, eat, but remember the big picture. ..keep in mind how much you consume over 24 hours and over a whole week.
    Enjoy your summer. P

Forgot to say, have a fabulous holiday in Cornwall Amazon. Enjoy a pastie for me and rock that new wardrobe.
Public holiday Monday for dear Liz’s birthday, aren’t we lucky you pommies came down here all those years ago? Not really party weather tho, very cold and wet at present.
Enjoy your big match this weekend RT! At least when one’s team is languishing like mine is at present, weekends are less, stressful!
    Haveagreatweekend everyone!

Nama, remember they moved “cracker night” from 24th May (Commonwealth Day, Empire Day, Queen Vic and Bob Dylan’s birthday) to June to make bushfires from the fireworks less likely and space our public holidays out? Shame they banned backyard fireworks β˜Ίβ˜Ίβ™¨πŸš€βŽπŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ”₯✨

Oh Purple, such great memories! When I was a kid in Mildura we had a paddock behind our house and we used to build the biggest bonfire every year, its a wonder we didn’t burn the town down!

Indeed…but if you tell the kids today…they won’t believe you πŸ˜€

    Hi Everyone,
This group it’s a “Virtual Britanica”. The old timers are ahed of the game and used to themselves however many here have a science back ground, knowledge to start an intelligent debate on their own mother English writting. I don’t! Still learning 😘 I ve been there too.
Anne don’t take it personal! I can be so touchy and needy sometimes … Let’s focus on the light at the end of the tunnel, the big picture and get the best of all.

Lately I have so much to do here and don’t know where to start … I will get there.’
    Be good kids πŸ’–

Much has been spoken about D. Pike having some insight into how they roll but to me its game day when they bounce the ball and start to play. I watched the Sunday Night program featuring Neale Daniher and others suffering from MND what an amazing bunch of humans and hats off to the AFL and everyone supporting and getting involved in the big freeze to raise much needed funds for research. Makes me proud to be an aussie. Holiday Monday game 11th play 12th on the big stage at the G. your lads will need to be at the top of their game but it can go either way. Have a groovy weekend fast friends
    Peace RT.

    Morning/evening all,

Aine, I was trying to point out how even though we try we are hard wired to be so harsh on ourselves. I had no intention of causing offence and please accept my apology as I’ve obviously managed to do so. Please also remember that the written word is often interpreted differently by every reader, and it can be very difficult to get the true meaning of something across as we get so much meaning from the tone and inflections of someone’s voice when we are speaking to each other.

I’m off now, have a good week everyone 😜😎

Hi Amazon have a fantastic time away and make good memories safe in the knowledge that there is and you have no case to answer here.
No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path. Buddha
    RT

    Amazon,
Have a great holiday! Let’s hope you get some good weather!
Aine- threads are places where ‘advice’ can be a little more personal than we would like but often a ‘trigger’ for a re-think of what we are doing or thinking! Changing your eating habits is a frustrating and tough business, sometimes we all get ‘sensitive’ to ‘words’ that were actually said to ‘help’ us in our struggles. We have analytical readers and posters interested enought to reply and debate our comments. It’s better than being ignored, someone is taking you seriously. I have often been ‘upset’ by others words but mostly by my own ‘lack of success’ when others are suceeding. Relax, stress inhibits weight loss, be kind to yourself. Take the support and kindness often on offer here. More importantly keep posting, if not here, somewhere, or start your own thread, it really helps in the long run. I would have given up long ago without this thread and I have ‘no doubt’ that I would have regained every lost pound. I have lost 5 stone too but currently struggling to lose a stone regain which has been hanging around a year now. That’s why I keep trying different plans, to find a winning solution. I felt really great a stone lighter and I want that back. There is no alternative but to keep trying. Maintenance is not going to be a breeze, we will need to get support through that time too. Take advice and support that helps you and ignore what doesn’t! It’s the only way to survive threads.
RT- hope your team win this weekend. Do you do any sport yourself?
HCB- nationality is immaterial in the weightloss struggle we are all sisters(and brothers). Wiwi is fluent in several languages if you want to post in your native tongue. Might be interesting! Many of us have Celtic roots Scotland, Ireland, Welsh just a couple of generations back. Hence that ‘fiery’ honest speaking.
Nama and PVE- joining memory lane. We still celebrate November 5 th traditionally with garden fireworks and party food which includes toffee apples after a warming soup. As children this was a very special night, each garden that backed on to each other would take turns in lettin off their fireworks so we could enjoy everyones. We shared the sparklers around too along with other hand held dangerous fireworks. A sensible adult always ensured children were safe. It was adventure walking to school the next day to find half burnt remains of exploded fireworks which had very exciting names. ‘Light up the sky with standard fireworks’ was a. Advertising song ever child knew. Not however good for the environment or the purse strings let alone the diet but great socially. Having attended communal ‘firework’ events I find they pall by comparison.
We have a fun day at bowls club today, we can wear colourful clothes instead of grey trousers and white shirts. I am going to ear bright red trousers and a fluorescent yellow top in protest of their ‘dull’ uniform code. I may dig out my folk week ‘boater’ too, it’s covered in sunflowers. There will be lots of unhealthy food there ( cakes and pastries) so I will take an apple and try to choose something sensible for lunch, maybe a jacket potato.
Have a great long weekend SH friends. Enjoy summer Weekend Brits. For others, wherever you are- have fun and be kind to yourselves.

    Amazon,

Have a great break in Cornwall. I hope the weather is good and you get a chance to wear your new slinky summer clothes!

Have fun at bowls Jo. Hopefully the old sticklers will enjoy it too and relax a bit!

Bizarre waking up to find a flurry of posts about a well-intentioned post that inadvertently caused offence. I couldn’t find anything but support in Amazon’s post. You definitely read it wrong Aine πŸ™‚ And don’t leave Aine, I was pleased to see the average age coming down!

So having survived a long weekend with friends last week, only 1lb up, and fasting one day this week, and going running twice, I’m at my upper maintenance limit today πŸ™ I guess there’s a lag between elevating insulin for a few days with simple carbs and sugars and then seeing the effect of that on the scales… Or perhaps it was the four pieces of Grassmere gingerbread which fell out of the freezer and into my mouth on Thursday afternoon…! Whatever, this week I’ve mostly been a fat storer not a burner πŸ™ No treats for me this weekend…

I hope Aine is still reading. Yes we all feel a bit ‘scratchy’ sometimes on this site. Sometimes there’s a great feeling of the kindness of strangers, sometimes there’s a touch of ‘who is this person who doesn’t know me….’ But there’s tremendous advice and comradeship, and I love the feeling that we’re scattered across the world! Come back Aine…..
Frozen gingerbread, Happy? Know the feeling! Some sourdough bread fell out of mine! But it was good. This way of eating does make me appreciate flavours, strawberries seem to be sweeter this year!

Amazon, have a good time in Cornwall. I’ll wave as you go past Exeter Services!

Amazon have a brilliant time pal . Aine please don’t leave . this group is an amazing plae to be . Yes!! sometimes we need a cick up the bum BUT it is always done in a nice way . I lost 4 stone on here within a year . I am 74 years old now ( not in the head though ) and I feel fitter than I have for more years than I can remember . I will NEver wear a bikini but I have lost 6 stones in total and I can hide the wee hangy bits well now lol .
I am sure you have noticed that my husband has been really ill and the people on this forum have given me more support than you could ever imagine . we are all friends too not just diet buddies .
Sorry There are lots of typos but for once I really don’t care lol . My hands are tired and I am hitting all the wrong keys . I am so so happy that my best friend and soulmate is going to be OK that nothing will get me down

    I love you all

    Wee xx

    Hello,

Amazon enjoy your trip! you always comeback with such a nice report that I mentally do the trip myself πŸ˜‰

Sorry kids! I am not joining other group 😜. If for any reason my allocation of words makes it hard to understand just come right back to me.
If I may I will stay here as much as I can! At least I am learning something new all the time, hanging out with cool real people and losing pounds.

Happy this coming and going of people is one of so many reasons I fell of track last year and had my pounds back more then I started 5:2 in January 2015. I have already a few dates next week and all is planed around my two Fast days.

Beautiful weather here, cool last night!
Nothing interesting to report at the moment but the same everyday routine.

    Enjoy your weekend πŸ’–

    Lovely Wee xx

Wee I am so glad everything went well with Mr. Wee. When you say you love ice cream I understand what you mean. My husband begged me not to buy any ice cream for him anymore. He just can’t control himself buuut, he is slim. His concerns are ridiculous! Lol
    Xoxo
    B

I would be down to 8 stone lol If I didn’t like ice cream . I cant believe I have not jumped into a huge tub of it inn the last few days . I don’t eat until after I come home from my visit with Jim . The last few day I have had porridge and frozen rasps . How good am I lol . Still on the weight I feel best at . I think the reason Jim is doing so well is that he eats healthily ,puts his plate down when he has had enough and doesn’t diet BUT watches 2 THE WEIGHT HE LIKES TO BE” .

    Hello All,
Back from bowls after a marathon game with two old fogies, they moaned like stink because we were playing a new game called 100 up. It took 2.5 hours and we still didn’t reach 100, so we just stopped. Vegetarian quiche for lunch with salad, yummy.
A few people made an effort dressing up but most just hats and silly T shirts.
I won a basket of fruit in the raffle so I am very pleased.

Healthcoach, your husband clearly understands how to control himself. Taking temptations away makes them much easier to avoid. For many of us it is the only way to stay on the “straight and narrow “.
People like Mr Wee are rare. An excellent skill to develop though…stopping when we’ve had enough.
Watching carefully how slim people eat is a good way to start.
Off to bed after a very busy, active day.
    ‘night. P

PVE how right you are pal . I would be a very rich woman if I had a penny for every time I have said over 55 years ” I wish I were like you pal and knew when I had enough ” I can do that most of the time now but not always . I love how I feel now and I would hate to go back to when I was 6 stone heavier . It IS NOT easy BUT it isn’t as hard as it used to be . This forum helps me so much though xxx

Absolutely Wee. Staying slimmer takes constant vigilance. Saying “no” to food will never be easy, but it’s SO worth it. We need to hang together mate ☺ P

Wow Weeman you lost a lot of weight! Have you tried Skinny Cows? Its ice-cream but made with skimmed milk and really low in calories. Not sure if they have that brand where you are, but they are really nice, especially the caramel truffle flavour!

JoJo congrats on winning the fruit! Better than chocolates!

Amazon I hope you have a lovely time in Cornwall – a beautiful part of the world. I had many holidays there as a child

Purple veggie Eater – we actually live 30 mins outside of Vancouver near the coast which is lovely. Vancouver is super expensive so we had the choice between a house in the “burbs or an apartment in the city. With 3 step children and a very spoiled cat we chose the “burbs and we love it.

Think my body clock has finally adjusted to will try to fast tomorrow, despite Italian day. My husband is not really helpful as he can eat what he wants and still remains slim, and adores my cooking. Have a few fast meals in the freezer already prepared so will hopefully make it easier.

Ali I love skinny cow ice cream . the mint chocolate chip one . I buy that as my first choice ..love it .. xxxxxx

Hi jojo the Adelaide Football Club played an exciting match against the West Coast Eagles in Perth WA last night a very tough option playing them on their home ground that said we won by 29 points a great achievement I don’t play sport really although have been known to get into twilight bowls socially have a hit of tennis and water ski way back in the day although unsure if I will be able to do that at 100 unlike the example by Dr Bert πŸ˜†
    Have a happy day
    Peace RT

    Hi all
Im in my first week of TFD although I have done the 5:2 before for a little while and lost weight but didnt adopt it as a way of life so put the pounds back on!
I was looking on the forums for a supportive group to join and saw this one. I was reading through recent posts for inspiration and noticed there has been some disagreements about peoples posts so not sure if this group is for me, but I thought I might give it a go!
I have about 19lbs to lose, which isnt much but I come from a low fat diet, yo yo diet background so its not going to be easy! But Im getting my head around it and I think Im in the right place to do this πŸ˜‰

    Welcome Kay65,
I am the Queen of Yoyoing sadly. We try to support each other here, it’s a thread that has been running a long time so we tend to be honest and forthright. That doesn’t always come out right in the printed word. When you are losing weight for years it gets very hard to stay on track but you know it simply has to be done to make your life better.
    Good Luck!
If you need any help please ask, we will try to be kind and supportive. Most importantly we are here for the long term as some of us are only half way through our journey down to goal.

    Welcome Kay
It sounds as if you have the right attitude now…you need to embrace 5:2 as a way of life, not a quick fix diet.
Many of us, who reached goal some time ago, practice low carb, full fat, mindful eating, with regular fasts. We also value the support of others through this forum. It never hurts to run your ideas past fellow travellers.
All the best this time around. Purple ☺

By the way, Jo…why are you up at 2am? I hope it’s a sign of a good night out? πŸ˜‰P

    Hi Everyone,

Kay welcome to our group! Stick around first before any judgment. You’ll see lots of back and fourth here but it isn’t personal and at the end there is always “the moral of the story”.
Also try reading the the 5:2 FastDiet book and come forward with questions and support.

I went quick out to a Girlfriend’s 60th birthday. She and I are from the same Town in Brazil. She doesn’t have any family here and works really hard to make ends meet. Was just 8 girls, some wine and Brazillian appetizers. A friendship of 20 years and will stay for a long time.
    Try to sleep now.
    Be well everyone 😘
    B
