  • Hi all,

Jo you have my sympathy – evenings always my hardest time, unless into a sewing or similar project. I don’t watch much TV but am often in and out of the kitchen and that is dynamite – once that little voice in the head starts making suggestions! I try to keep busy in the evening of a fast day, only way for me. Its so frustrating to blow a whole days good work!

Amazon Kew sounds beautiful, and wherever you are sounds gorgeous too Apricot. Just as well you are driving to Cornwall Amazon, with all those new clothes you would be paying for excess baggage! Spring and early Summer are absolutely the best times. We are freezing and wet down here. NSW and Tasmania having serious floods.

I just warmed up by scrubbing the shower, so boring but I am warm now and feeling very smug! (I am not a regular shower scrubber, just when essential).

Almost thru my Tues B2B fast and doing ok. Out for lunch tomorrow, so need to persist! I stole a crumb of tasty cheese when feeding the magpies earlier, didn’t seem fair that they got it all. Gosh they were dripping wet, I couldn’t resist when one came back for seconds an hour later.

Mmm, that menu sounds so appealing, Wiwi, perhaps I will swap with the dog. ๐Ÿ™‚ Certainly Rome is a happier place than France at the moment.

The gorgeous weather continues here, but I think the remnants of your storm are approaching, P.

Snacking in the evening has been the last thing to get under control – I’m still working on that one! ๐Ÿ™ West Wing – I have all the series in the whole set, have watched it twice. I plan for it to keep me entertained in my old age, too.

Good luck if you get the storm Barata.
My suggestion re snacking at night is to rid the house of snacks! If it’s not there, or is safely frozen, you have to stop and think first. Dr M’s Ask Me I’m A Doctor, last night, covered exactly those things. Don’t have tempting food around. Serve the meal and store the rest before you sit down (eg on the freezer). Noone is perfect, but we can all develop methods to avoid bad habits. ๐Ÿ˜ฏP

    Hi PVE,
I really am going to look into hypnotism but I am not sure I would be a good subject, far too entrenched in bad habits. I assure you I don’t buy the the snacks, it’s my other half, no serious weight problem of course and it’s really hard in the evening when he is sitting there munching. He fasts all day every day, has done it for years. Evening are his eating time, all high fat and carbs. I know I can get it sorted, just dig in, I have beaten it before and will do it again. Did you know you burn more calories reading than watching TV, crazy. But I am really enjoying West Wing this time round, second view of the series. I go out at least two nights and have one night here with friends playing cards, so I am not a couch potato every night.

I am seeing an Elvis Tribute singer next Monday, can’t wait, I love songs from the 60’s. Not sure I will be able to sit in my seat though, may need to dance in the aisle.

I have been very tired lately, really unusual for me, usually loads of energy. May need to have another rethink of what I am doing. My back is hell today, lifting bags of compost probably.

It’s been a hungry but perfect fast day so far and I am out tonight. I have been in the garden all morning, making up more pots, it’s gloriously hot, at last summer is here.

My Dyson service engineer has serviced my machine and persuaded me to buy a new cordless animal vacuum. He gave me ยฃ100 off and serviced my three machines here for nothing. I took it on a test drive around three rooms and up two flights of stairs and was totally convinced it’s the one for me. It was so versatile and light and went under the lowest of my chairs without the need to move them. It has super suction for my car (dog hair gets stuck like Velcro to that) Charlie spends a lot of time in my car with trips to the vet. One of the machines here really belongs to my flat but it was not functioning well, turns out it needed 8 parts including a new handle and gears, not much of the original machine left now. I also have my son’s old Dyson as a spare since he went over to cordless. I think it might be time to sell some on EBay, especially as now they all work and look like new.

Amazon- I think you will be back from Cornwall before I go, don’t eat all the pasties, I have promised myself ‘one only’ plus one Cornish fresh clotted cream scone tea, not too bad as I am there for 2 weeks. Otherwise it will be one healthy meal per day, lots of salad and salmon.

Off to drink some more water, have a great day everyone, don’t get sunburnt!

Only about 5 more hours before a light feed Jo? You can do it.
It is hard with others nibbling nearby, but see it as poison for you and rise above it. You can do it!
Iff to bed now. ‘night. P

    Hello
Some days seems harder then others!
It’s a journey so if I can’t resist hunger pangs I will have a little miso on my 16th.
Dreaming about a nice pair of white trousers next month.
    Be well ๐Ÿ˜˜
    B

    Hello,
Made it through to a small salmon salad. No more food until tomorrow.

    Excellent ๐Ÿ˜Š

Well done everyone on their fasting. I am fasting tomorrow, as I have been up since 5am with jet lag and feeling very hungry at the oddest of times. Managed to drag my arse to hot yoga though and do a Gillian Michaels DVD to get myself back into the swing of things. Super bloated today though, which is weird as I took my own food on the plane. I guess the 9 hour flight takes its toll on your body and I am not 21 anymore!

jojo58 – I have the same issue with my husband, he is really slim but nibbles all day. His kids are the same. Its very difficult in the evening seeing him munching away, but if I do it I gain so much weight and feel horrible.

Going to have an early night and a healthy dinner in preparation for fasting tomorrow.

    Hello,

Ali sometimes when I see a slim person I get a little jealous but there are so many ill and we don’t know what’s happening on other’s lives.
No! We are not 21 anymore! Those days aren’t coming back but…. There’s 5:2 lol.
My last trip back home I was for the first time really swollen all over ๐Ÿ™
The fast wasn’t easy today but managed to de end.
Thursday will be a better day.
    Xoxo

Where are you from? I know many of you are from New Zealand and figured UK for some others. I live in Vancouver but spend a lot of time in Holland as my husband has a son from a previous marriage there. So jet lagged it’s not normal, but my body can’t take these flights any more! We try to go back every 2 months but I am really suffering. Fell asleep at 9pm but now 12.37am and so hungry!

Starting Monday I am doing another 10 day detox as in no caffeine, salt, booze etc. We really overdid things in Europe the last 2 weeks seeing friends and feel I need to reset things. My stomach is so swollen I look like I am a 43 year old pregnant lady! Not a good look for the summer.

Waiting for my cat to return so I can go to bed. Never had kids of my own so she really is my baby and a little worried when she doesn’t come home in the evening….

Busy day planned, decided to fast again as feeling strong willed after successful day yesterday. Lots of cleaning to do today plus two games of bowls, one indoors and one away match, then games evening tonight.

I think that one meal per day and no snacking is the best lifestyle choice for me. As RT says ‘it,s easier to ‘not start eating’ than stop once you have started feeding the hunger dragon. It’s like the body is saying great, what’s next? I am learning more about myself as time goes on. Perhaps this is why I could fast for five days without too much difficulty yet not beat portion size and eating control, I don’t have a ‘full’ mechanism.

The Horizon programme about Obesity was great last night. They reckon there will be a cure for this modern day disease in ten years a free injection to change your hormone levels. This education really needs to get out there as babies of the future are already getting a fat storage imbalanced ratio by both their parents passing on defective DNA due to bad eating habits.

They have discovered 2 fat genes I stead of 1 in obese people (by testing identical twins with different weights) with 2 fat genes you are pre disposed to being big eaters, not feeling full and therefore over eating. If you know you have these jeans it helps you fight your own genetic makeup. If you know you are diabetic you don’t eat too much sweet stuff, if you know you have 2 fat genes you learn to be stronger and resist the ‘pull’ of overeating. Interestingly they identified that if you have these genes you are more likely to lose weight through exercise than if you don’t. That is a new piece of information to me. They showed the benefits of weight training, not aerobic exercise- interesting?

We can stop blaming ourselves ( failure to control our appetite)and blame the hand we are dealt. We can let go of the guilt of failure, we have a bad poker hand but we can still win the game if we can get confident and bluff our way through it.

They also talked about healthy gut bacteria and possible effects. Evidence is strong that transfers of healthy bacteria would be sucessful but it is only used in medical conditions that exclude obesity at the moment. They recommend a wide variety diet based on the meditteranean food choices. So basically I am doing everything right, stick with it.

I know most of you know this information because you are all very well read but I am putting it out there for those that haven’t yet read all the latest scientific research.

So basically guys, help is on the way, meantime let’s help each other. Keep fasting, keep fighting and move on from mistakes. You are playing cards, you can’t win every hand dealt.
    Have a great Wednesday friends

I haven’t seen the program in Aus yet Jojo so can’t really comment, but an injection because we have too much genetic predisposition!!! Ah, so the drug companies can make more money! I guess its less drastic than the surgeons making money on gastric banding, but surely education is the better route? We may be predisposed but obesity is not infectious like whooping cough! Sorry, but I am very cynical. If there is money and big business involved, the governent might do something about the obesity epidemic.

Ali, as you asked, we are from all over, Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Jojo, Amazon,HappyNow are English, Weeman is Scottish, Wiwi is a Kiwi and French (dont ask!), Barata is a kiwi, and Purple, Bayleaf, RT, Nicky, AussieOma, and myself are from various parts of Australia. Sorry to anyone I have missed, its dinnertime here and I am not fasting, but about to feast on chicken wings!!

    Hi Nama,
They were talking about an alternative to surgery for very obese people which does have risks. There would be no cost involved it would be cheaper for the NHS ( in this country)in the long term. Obviously you have a different system and it might not be included in your medical insurance schemes. I am telling you now I would pay to make my lifelong struggle easier, no question about it.

Obesity is killing people and making them very sick both physically and mentally. I have a friend who is killing himself through over eating, he has turned down bariatric surgery and is literally eating himself to death. Him simply can’t face the future, he has no hope, it’s very distressing to see. He won’t accept help. He is a very intelligent guy, lost his job through I’ll health caused by his eating.he needs treatment for depression but that is not on offer, just more drugs which he doesn’t accept because it is a viscious circle.

I agree with you, prevention is better than cure. Education is better for all but as we know ‘fast food’ is addictive and people are not ‘active’ enough. When you are obese activity becomes harder due to health problems. Everyone needs help earlier, when they are one stone overweight. We need healthy ‘take away’ restaurants and more and more publicity about ‘obesity’. What are governments doing to stop unhealthy food being widely available? The towns with the most ‘take aways’ have the fattest populations, guess we need to move to the country!

    Hi fasters

Well dear, Nama, you won’t get overfed on chicken wings as you have to work hard to get anything.
You have given a good sum up of our whereabouts.
Also HCB is in the US, and Aine from Brazil, Apricot from UK. At present we have lost track of Penti who is in Portugal.

Today I am looking after my little grandson (nearly 2) south of Rome. I have a very widely dispersed family. Ali, I live in France only because I am still not properly financially separated from a past French husband.****

JoJo, interesting comments, about the programme you saw.

It’s a fast day, but not 0 calorie, and this evening’s salad will be all. In the meantime, I am interacting with the capsule coffee maker! (We haven’t got one at home). I will take my potassium and magnesium complex and drink my 2 litres of St Pelligrino.

One good thing about fasting on Wednesday is that we are at least ahead of the sothern hemisphere Thursday fasters.

    XX Wiwi

exercise ..right portions and water are the way to go ๐Ÿ™‚

I sound in a disagreeable mood tonight, plus the wings are not quite cooked! But Ashley I have to dispute your opinion re exercise. Of course it is good for us and necessary, but you wont lose weight unless you focus on food. Not only portion size, but actual food group.
Jo I thought you were talking about some sort of injection to prevent obesity! As I said, have not seen the program yet. But am very, very skeptical when drugs are involved. Your poor friend makes me very sad, he is no different than an alcoholic drinking himself to death. I agree re saving the health budget in the long term, imagine how many zillions would be saved long term if cigarettes were banned. Heart disease, cancer just to name a few. But our governments are addicted to the taxes they raise. Sorry, very cynical tonight. I don’t have the answers, but feel education is the key.
Hi Wiwi, have fun with your little munchkin!! You are right about the wings, but I love them! Just plain, roasted to crisp, with a little sauce.

    Morning/evening all

Jo, as adults we are all repsonsible for what we eat and I disgree that we can all blame it on genetics. None of us know if we carry the so called “fat” gene and I would hazard a guess that there are millions of overweight and obese people out there who don’t and have just got bad eating habits and/or are plain greedy or are so out of tune with their bodies that they don’t understand what hunger feels like and eat because it is “mealtime” or have a snack because someone told them they need to eat every couple of hours or their blood sugar will drop. We all know that is what is meant to happen and it isn’t harmful but the myth arose and has been perpetuated and even nurses give such (misleading and inaccurate) advice to patients.

I cannot agree with negating the resposibilty we have to keep ourselves as fit and healthy as possible, something I did for many years and am so grateful that I finally opened my eyes to what I was doing to myself.
I’m with Nama 100% as far as drug companies making more money out of obesity. The answer is simple and free, eat less and ensure it is a healthy balanced diet and by that I mean LCHF and fast to get our insulin levels under control.
Take exercise if we can. We don’t need trillions of pounds being spent to cure obesity we need to stop people getting that way in the first place, and the medical profession and scientists across the world need to eat humble pie and admit the advice they’ve been giving for years is inappropriate.

Most exercise that people take is aerobic, walking, running, cycling, swimming, keep fit classes of many descriptions and they are all excellent for cardio vascular fitness but it takes a long time to burn up a substantial amount of calories. It takes me an hour of hard work to burn 500 in the gym. Most people don’t have the time to do sufficient exercise for it to make a significant difference to their weight.
Weight training is targetting particular muscles and working them to the point that they become damaged in order for the body to put a lot of energy into repairing them and making them stronger which also makes them bigger if you work hard enough at it so it is no surprise that it burns up more calories.
Once again it would be necessary to devote a lot of time to it for it to have an effect.

I wasn’t fasting yesterday but I only had one meal at lunchtime and then met a friend in the pub last night. We only had two drinks so it was a very good non fast day for me. I’m fasting again today and am having the last of the asparagus wrapped in parma ham with a salad.
I decided to experiment and froze most of the asparagus. I blanched it for a minute and froze it in portions. I’ll try defrosting one portion and puttin it in the oven for five minutes and if that is not a success I’ll make some soup with it.

Have a good one everybody ๐Ÿ˜œ

    Hi Amazon,
This is not a drug, it’s hormone treatment. We accept it post menopause what is the difference? I am not negating responsibility I know I am responsible for my own weight but I agree that nutritional advice in the past has even wrong. I think we need to research the obesity issues and find solutions to prevent this misery happening to our children. Nobody chooses to be obese, it’s not healthy.
Watch the program, it’s not hype, it’s help

Jo, you are missing my point,

I wasn’t talking about you taking responsibilty for your body but EVERYONE and not looking for someone or something else to blame which seems to have become the norm for almost every situation.

The definition of a drug is “a medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body” so administered hormones are drugs.

I do not agree that nobody chooses to be obese because if we all did something about it the first time we noticed a tight waistband there would be no obesity and diabetes epidemic along with all the other health issues that arise from obesity but we must take into account that many people have taken advice and gone down the low fat route and regained weight which we now know makes the problem worse. Also society has evolved in that cheap takeaway food is readily available and as a reuslt everywhere we look, in the street, on buses, trains, in cars, the workplace, people graze and it has become commonplace along with being overweight.

Nama is correct in that education is the answer. As I said previously the medical and science establishment need to change their tune.
All pregnant women should recieve the correct dietary advice for themselves and their child and general physiology and nutrition should be on the national curriculum from primary school onwards. The majority of children would be fascinated by how their bodies allow them to walk, talk breathe and eat, and what happens to the food they eat once it has been put into their mouths.
There should be a nationwide drive to get healthy food into company canteens and cafeterias. The government need to legislate in order to ensure that food manufacturers put the whole truth on processed food packaging.

As for giving hormone injections for something that is preventable for the majority with the use of education and a healthy diet, I disagree. I would guess that very few people who comply with a LCHF regime alongside fasting would not be able to lose weight and keep it off and only a very small percentage would actually require medical intervention.

I don’t agree with menopausal HRT either as it seems to cause as many problems as it solves including increasing the risk of certain types of cancer.

I am not crticising the program for pointing out that some people are genetically predisposed to gaining weight but that doesn’t mean they have to let it happen.

    Hi again Jo,
I look forward to this episode of Horizon making it Downunder, it sounds interesting. Sorry but I would never have had hormone treatment for menopause (especially when I knew it was made from mares urine!), I believe that is interfering with nature to benefit a drug company. Perhaps I was lucky that my symptoms were not overly severe, but I only take drugs short term (as in pain relief) and hate the way all the normal passages of life have been medicalised. Just like childbirth and old age. Our society has been so sucked in by the marketing crowd, too many people don’t question what they are told.

After I had been fasting about 6 months and my sugar cravings diminished significantly, I still believed all the stuff I had been told by Weight Watchers and all the ‘experts’, thinking I was merely forming ‘good habits’ and breaking old ‘bad habits’ But I realise now that the difference was fasting and resetting my hormones (mainly Insulin) myself. It wasn’t willpower, if that worked I never would have been overweight in the first place. Most of us on here are old enough to remember when cakes were mostly home made and a rare treat, icecream (sorry Wee) was also home made, with no chemicals, biscuits were home made etc. I remember ‘supermarkets’ originally had two aisles only, dogs were fed on table scraps and there was not an entire aisle devoted to pet food. I was never chubby as a kid. My weight issues crept up slowly and I take responsibility, but being a person who enjoyed food it was harder being constantly surrounded by it and exposed to media etc, than during my childhood. OK thats capitalism and it sure beats Communism, but the ‘smart’ people benefit at the expense of the rest of us. We need to outsmart the buggers!

Whoops we crossed posts Amazon, its seems we are on the same page!

Good afternoon from a gorgeous sunny Scotland . We have had lovely weather this last week . I am sorry I have not got time to read all todays posts . I will do it tomorrow .
I am spending a quiet day with my lovely Jim . Tomorrow is surgery day . ..he has to be there for 8 AM . And then we might be told what time his surgery will be . I will come back home and keep myself busy until they phone to say all is well . He will be taken straight to ICU so I am told . Our lovely DIL is taking me up in the evening if we are allowed in . It will depend how long the op is and if he is well enough for a visitor.

Take care all and I will let you all know as soon as I hear anything /

    Wee xx

    Hi Weemam,
No matter what we say, you will be worried sick tomorrow. Just know that your cyber buddies are all here, saying a quiet prayer for Jim. Try to remember, the docs would not consider this surgery if they were not confident it would be successful. xx

Thanks pal . I needed someone to say that xxxxxxxxxx

Wee it is far safer for the surgeons to repair the aneurysm in a controlled, safe environment than to risk it bursting with potentially deadly consequences. These guys do this stuff every day, its like you and I ironing a shirt! I am not religious at all, but I pray regularly and tomorrow I will be praying for you as much as Jim. He has the easy bit, he gets to sleep through it all. You will be the one with the thumping heart. This time tomorrow you will be feeling much better xxx

Let me join Nama, Wee, in saying that I too will be thinking of you tomorrow. When I had my knee op a few years ago, I was worried for my OH waiting so lovingly for me to emerge from the vapour. I am sure your Jim will have this feeling too.
Let us know as soon as possible how he is.

Love, hugs and all thoughts for tomorrow
    Wiwi

Hugs from me and best wishes from us both, Wee. Dear Jim will be relieved when it’s over and his Weemam will still be smiling. โ˜บ xxP

Wee, not much more I can add except to reiterate what Nama said regarding the expertise of the surgeons. The operation could take several hours so don’t get too stressed if you don’t hear anything for ages.

We’ll be thinking of you both XXX

When he got the triple bypass it was the first op he had . he panicked and burst his stitches . he was taken back into surgery and put into an induced coma to let his body relax . I know what you mean about the relief as every time I see him wince I panic inside thinking the aneurysm is going to burst . this surgery will take all that stress away . When he had the bypass he was very poorly before that . He is now pretty strong for an auld guy ( our joke lol) so he will be able to walk without pain too if they can do the groin one as well . The main one is the AAA. Thank you all so much . I feel as if I know you all so well now . Sorry if I have gone on BUT although Jim knows I am worried I am being so positive for him . I will pop in and post whenever I know anything .

    Thanks again guys xxxxxx

We are all in this forum trying to fast in the best possible way, with the main goal of losing weight, many with problems with sugar, the other with wine, others with bread and biscuits ….

I think the ideal for all of us is not to lose weight and be able to go back to eating as before, but acquire new habits or maybe go back to ancient habits, where there were fewer meals, almost no sugar and very little bread and anything processed.

I’m two years in a process of dietary change and I think it is only natural when I do not really have more desires of junk food, I met feel all the time with what feeds me and do well and I do not feel in diet .

We have several concerns regarding our lower metabolism, but if it download and we eat less, would not be the ideal? people who eat little older less and have more health.

ย It is a paradox to eat sick.

First the food industry spoils you and then the pharmaceutical industry wants to heal you and that is how we are with obesity and disease growing increasingly.

I live in Brazil, I see in supermarkets, mothers with strollers full of wrong foods, led by the advertising campaigns, all forget the good examples of the power of our ancestors.

Sorry for the bad english google.

    Anaide,

I understand what you are saying and yes you are correct. We must eliminate old bad habits and make new healthier ones. The bad habits have been with most of us for a long time so it take time to get used to new ones.

Has anyone seen the Jamie Oliver show where he tries to go into schools in LA trying to tackle the war on obesity? Basically the LA council will not let him into the schools as obviously they are getting a kick back from the company providing the bad food. Scary stuff.

I also read an interesting article about gluten free foods. They basically pump them full of sugar and fat to make them taste nice. So they are way worse for you than the normal foods. We don’t find this in Europe however, and I bring a bag full of crackers and bread back from Holland when we come to Canada.

Where I grew up in Scotland we didn’t have any fast food places, only a fish and chip shop which I guess is bad enough but that was a treat not a weekly thing.

Woke up this morning with the pleasure of cleaning up dead bunny remains. My cat is a nightmare when we have been away and gives us nightly catches as rewards. Husband is not impressed as he adopted a cat and me 3 step children…not sure which is more work! Ha! Ha!

    Hello,
Little 30 minutes break to recharge my brain right now. Too much running today trying to have one of our rentals ready and search for the perfect tenant.
Great thread folks! We are all so blessed to be here with our eyes and ears open in search of what would be the best for our ultimate health. The exposure and lure promessing help it’s everywhere. Right there are health claims numerous associations on the food packages, surgery, pills, diets and celebrities with solutions for everybody. Very hard to decide which road to take and I’ve been in many of them.
If I would go to my mother and ask her to limit her rice and beans and slowly adopt a fast she’ll kill me. Her doctor told her to eat every 3 hours for her blood sugar and she is God period.
I try to be a good example to my family ๐Ÿ˜˜
Mrs Wee I’ll be thinking of you being strong for yourself and Mr Wee. I am sure when I am up tomorrow to read good news from you ๐Ÿ’‹๐Ÿ™
    Be good there everyone

    Peace RT

    Hi RT,

That is a very interesting article and I would say that I am fat adapted which is good news ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve been trying to improve my exercise rate on the rowing machine and exercise bike at the gym over the past couple of weeks, and doing a few other things with a view to increasing both strength and fitness. As a result I have sore shoulders due to using some of the resistance equipment at the gym that I’ve not used for months. I started doing lower body work again a few weeks ago now that my back and hip are so much better, and decided that this week I should restart upper body work.
I found it hard going and was unable to shift the same weights as previously so I’ll have to work my way up again. I’ll give it another go tomorrow ๐Ÿ˜ซ

    Hello,
Just thinking … I can skip meals, exercise w/o food so I believe I am a fat burner. It’s all about that “must have breakfast”.
Thanks RT I will play close attention. Good article from Dr Mercola. I like him as well.
    xoxo
    B

Not sure I know what you mean when you say youre a “fat burner”? We all burn three energy substrates ALL the time regardless of what activity we are doing. Glucose, glycogen and fat. The percentages change depending on the intensity of the activity and what we have available to us at that particular time. Activity that is about 50-60% of our max effort usually pushes up the fat burning percentage but its not a huge percentage change.

You can become more fat adapted (i.e. your liver’s ability to efficiently process stored fats into glucose and ketone bodies and your cells ability to utilise fats rather than glucose) but this takes a lot of effort and continued water only fasting. A reduced 500 cal fast day is not going to get you there. You have to continually put yourself into ketosis or stay in ketosis. The body is continually performing autophagy (the controlled killing of poorly performing cells). By continually entering ketosis (or staying in ketosis) the poorly performing cells will be the ones that are reliant on glucose as their preferred energy substrate and the ones that cant process fats very well. They will be the ones that are replaced first during autophagy and they will be replaced by cells that have the ability to use fat as their preferred energy substrate. I.e. Keto adapted. If you are not putting yourself into ketosis I cant really see how you can become fat adapted? It has taken me about 9 months of water only fasting and it is only in the last month or so that I think that Im actually realising any difference.

I think Mercola’s theory of fatburners v sugarburners is a bit simplistic. My dad and I were always the skinny ones in my family. We were also the ones who loved food and craved it. He was thin all his life. I didn’t bulk up until my 40s. My desire for food has not changed during my life. Despite being slim now, and perfectly capable of fasting all day and exercising vigorously on an empty stomach, I still experience craving hunger. I just ignore it.

My mum was always overweight. She ate food by the clock, not because she was hungry. She was never a “foodie”, but always claimed she would get “weak” without food.

Mr P has never had much hunger. Still doesn’t, so it’s easier for him to fast, but he has always carried a fair bit of fat. Obviously not a natural ‘fat burner’. We are all individual.

On another note, Dr Fung suggests cider vinegar reduces blood sugar spikes. Mr P had taken up having a couple of dessertspoons of cv if he knows he will be stuck with eating high carb food (eg a party). It works like a treat. Not recommended as an alternative to good eating and fasting, but a great fallback when there is little alternative.
    Cheers P

    Morning all,

I agree the Mercola definitions seem overly simple. It seems to be more about diet/ carbohydrate intake/ cravings than fat adaptation per se? Anyway, all a bit academic really if what you do works for weight loss and maintenance….

    Wee,

Thinking of you and Jim today. It’s going to be a long day for you, but he’s in good hands.

    Ali,

My cat found a nest of baby rats in a border this week. Maybe a week old, but still blind. He dragged them out onto the lawn, killed them all, then went back throughout the day and ate his way through the lot. Luckily he doesn’t think enough of me to bring me ‘gifts’ ๐Ÿ˜€

We had guests for a long weekend. I had fasted last Wednesday, then didn’t eat all day Thursday (too busy) but made up for it in the evening. Very pleased to see only 1lb up on the scales on Monday post-visit. I think it helped that our friends were both slight, and not at all greedy. Fasted on Tuesday to shed the lb, and it’s now as if we never had visitors ๐Ÿ˜€

    Happy fasting or mindful eating!

    Good Morning All,
Good Luck Jim and thinking of you Wee. Hugs!
B2B went well yesterday, 24/1 now my preferred eating (fasting) pattern, but I do have a cuppa with a splash of semi skim milk if I don’t fancy green tea, in the middle or at the end of bowls games and first cuppa of the day. I guess that stops me getting into Ketosis state? It’s all so complicated! I wish someone would just lock me in a room with a few good books and a rowing machine until I get to goal. It would of course need a garden too. Just a salad delivery at tea time daily, problem solved, Three months should do it!
PVE- I just started Apple Cider Vinegar, verdict out so far, let you know if it makes a difference in the long term. But if I indulge in any bread in future I will dip it in balsamic and Virgin olive oil and forget the butter, love it.
Amazon- I wasn’t taking it personally, just stating I would have hormone treatment for obesity. I didn’t take it for long post removal of systic ovaries, just 6 months, but it saw me through the worst of very severe symptoms. I was in my 30’s when my ovaries were removed it was a real shock to my system, extreme sweats and contant nausea, inability to sleep too. I don’t think we really appreciate hormones until production goes wrong.
Good win at bowls yesterday in the boiling sunshine, perfect afternoon.
Games evening went well, I switched their snack treat from biscuits to cut up apple, not everyone approved but ‘my house, my rules’.
No change on the scales today but I had to take pain killers yesterday, twisted my ankle and pulled a muscle in my neck (which is very painful today). I have found any medication stops weightloss temporarily.
Rock choir this morning and a singles match this afternoon hopefully in the lovely sunshine.
    Keep fasting friends

    Morning/evening all,

big booty, did you read the link to the article we were discussing? If you did you would know what we were discussing, if you didn’t shame on you ๐Ÿ˜‰

I know you are a water fast disciple but many of us are not and we just do what works for us which is 500 calories. The state of ketosis is discussed endlessly but is irrelevant is we are losing/maintaining weight as a result of 5:2 or one of its variations.

Purple, Happy, I agree it was a bit simplistic and my post comment smiley was meant to be a ๐Ÿ˜‰ typing finger malfunction!!!!!

Jo, the hormone treatment you had at the age you had it is not the same as giving HRT to someone who has reached menopause at a natural progression and is suffering from various associated issues. Early menopause due to ovarian malfunction can cause many issues in later life so drug therapy using hormones is entirely appropriate as the benefits outweigh the risks.

Slightly overcast start here but it is warm and sunshine is promised later. I’m off to the gym again soon, I’m not an addict honest ๐Ÿ˜†

Have a good one everybody ๐Ÿ˜œ

Ha ha, you know you’re a gym bunny now ๐Ÿ˜€

I’m only going 3 times per week at the moment. I would like it to be 5 but some mornings my head is stuck to the pillow or there is something more exciting on offer ๐Ÿ˜Ž
I have to say that my overall fitness is much improved and along with all this healthy eating I feel better than I’ve done for years and have lots more energy, although no longer working makes everything easier!

Aren’t you holidaying in Cornwall, Amazon?

Not until Saturday and I can hardly wait ๐Ÿ˜„

Iโ€™m new here. Only 8 weeks into FD but it is working well but slowly (as it should). This is the only diet / WOL I have ever been able to stick to for more than a couple of weeks.
Bigbooty, I have to echo what Amazon says. When I first browsed the forum I was dismayed by all the proscriptive words on here:
    โ€œCut out all carbsโ€, โ€œwater fast for 36 hoursโ€, โ€œcut out alcoholโ€, โ€œexercise doesnโ€™t helpโ€.
It was nearly enough to put me off trying as the last thing I wanted was an unsustainable & highly restrictive regime; those are the things that so many of us have failed on before and is why we have happily alighted on Dr Mโ€™s & Mimiโ€™s method.
You may want to think about the effect your words have on Newbies as they can be very discouraging whereas following the 5:2 as set out in the book actually works. Some of you may want to modify it as you gain more experience but for those of us who are just starting out, the method as outlined in the book is fine. We know we can have what we want tomorrow, but not just how much we want and if we are mindful rather than restrictive on NF days it will lead to success. We will also notice less appetite for those foods you see as the enemy but that should be a gradual natural process and I for one will never stop having pasta, wine or the occasional sweet treat.
Finally a few words in support of exercise: Firstly it does burn more calories than being sedentary; it may be fewer extra calories than some hope but Iโ€™d rather burn them than not. Secondly, muscle at rest burns more calories than fat so it is definitely worth toning up. Thirdly, HIT as outlined in the Fast Diet book does have some extra fat burning properties and is well worth giving a go. Lastly, exercise just makes you feel better about yourself. If you have a disability or lifestyle that means you cannot fit exercise in then you can be sure that modifying intake alone will get you there but letโ€™s not knock exercise and say it isnโ€™t an important tool in this battle if you are able to do it.
Sorry, about the rant and it isnโ€™t personal but it was beginning to get me down. I really want this to work and the kind of regime you and some others talk about as if it is the only way to go, frankly scares me.

    Good Morning,
Gorgeous day here! Looks like spring. I will be going to my Pilates and after my Chiro. Still not 100% better, it’s 6 months now.

So it means that when I have my very well needed cup of coffee with some milk in the morning and trying to have my 400 calories around the 18th hour I am not in ketosis stage?
Not that clear to me… Doesn’t matter really I keep going. I mentioned before my scale is the one that gives the BMI, fat (sensitive type of creature :)… According to my instinct, on that scale tomorrow I will be 5 pounds away from my goal. No reason to celebrate yet. Been there done that.

    Happy Day to everyone ๐Ÿ˜
    B

    Nothing to lose,
Everyone should choose their own path, no one on here is recommending anything for others than 5:2 if that works for you and we are happy for you. Some of us have been influenced by Jason Fung and report our progress. It’s great that you can continue to eat foods and drinks you enjoy. We are all different in the way we cope with changing our way of eating to be healthier and fitter. Many of us are very active and promote how good we feel. We also accept that others really don’t enjoy it and some have health problems which prevent participation.
I agree we must try to be more positive and not promote restrictions for everyone.
