  • Hi all,

I opted for some retail therapy this morning. Since my latest back issues starting resolving I’ve been thinking about buying a new cushion to put behind me when sitting on the sofa so I went in search of one this morning and found exactly what I wanted AND it was reduced from Β£40 to Β£28 which made me very happy.
I also went into my favourite clothes store for a look round and this skirt jumped out at me and I just had to buy it. It is sage green linen and matches several of my summer tops so will be perfect for my upcoming trip to Rome πŸ™‚
The store provides drinks for customers which I actually think is a daft idea when looking at clothes and is asking for spillage accidents but I had a coughing fit so decided to have a glass of whatever the orange stuff in the jug was. I still have no idea what it was apart from the fact that it was disgustingly sweet and sickly. It did stop my coughing fit though!

Nama, I’m considering going to the gym tomorrow and if I’m not well enough to work out sitting in the steam room.

Good Luck, Jojo, with your doctor’s help.

I like your retail therapy, Amazon. When do you go to Rome? It’s warm there now.
Spring was just about over when we left a week ago. Your green skirt will be great for the weather there.

I can’t do retail therapy as we are so far from shops and Amazon is the only choice, and not a bad retail therapy site.

I made some soup this morning in the slow cooker with about 900g of green veges, ginger garlic and spices, as today is a fast day. After a cup of that while looking at the snow on the French Alps, I feel warm and full (for a short time anyway)

After 6 days of BSD, I’ve lost about 700g.

I quite like the BSD, but feel that for us all experienced fasters, that’s it’s a bit of Much Ado about nothing. It’s great for the diabetics, who have discovered it, because it offers hope, and a life-changing solution, but for us it’s common sense. No simple carbs!
I haven’t followed slavishly, as breakfast is not a word in my vocabulary. But I notice that my body is reacting to the fast today after getting well under 1000 cals on the last couple of days.

I don’t have a headache, but my head is turning and I feel light-headed.It will pass.

    Happy fasting
    XX Wiwi

    Hello people,

I am amazed to see how much is going on in this forum over the weekend. I did not find time to sit down and write anything and I used the time in the train this morning to read up on all your posts.
My joints are actually a little better today which might be due to the warm weather in Switzerland. Spring has arrived!
Wiwi – My arthritis is not osteo but inflammatory (rheumatism). I also decided to change doctors as I haven’t been happy with my current rheumatologist for a while now. I am looking forward to having someone new look at my joints and have the whole situation and treatment evaluated again. I didn’t get an appointment until the end of May though and just hope that the joints will not act up again until then.
Jojo – I don’t really like hot water bottles and I really need something that helps me get up and go in the morning as I don’t have the time to rest but have a full day with either work or two toddlers around. Lovely but a challenge. πŸ™‚

I just watched the “Aetiology of obesity” videos and have to say that they give me new motivation to continue with the 5:2 plan. I kind of neglected my fasting lately. I love science and seeing real evidence of why things work or do not work. The health benefits are so obvious and the thery just makes so much sense to me.

Have a good day/night all of you.

Another lurker popping up to say Hello!

JoJo…so sorry that you are still having such pain from your surgery. Hope the Dr has a solution for you. Seems a long time to still be having that much pain.

I’m still slogging along on my fasting and recorded a new low weight this morning. YAY! About 15 lbs to go to get to the upper range of my goal weight. Vacations are coming up, so I fear I’ll be doing some yo-yoing the next few months. Ah well…..that’s life!

Take care all and be well!

Shaylee – I am off hit water bottles too now, one burst on me today and I had just filled it from the kettle. It bust near the neck and scolded my legs. Just what I needed! Luckily I was very quick to get clothing off and cold wet tea towels on me this reduced area of scold quickly thank goodness.
Doctor has put me back on painkillers along with senecot tablets plus Amitriptyline at night. I am now using an electric blanket instead of hot water bottle. Not as effective but safer.
Lori-PA-very well done especially on having goal in site. Great to celebrate weight losses.

Lori, congratulations! …it’s SUCH a wonderful feeling to achieve a goal any goal,

I’m on the final stretch for my 2nd B2B FD. It’s 18h45 now and I’ve consumed 241 calories. But the dark lands of MORDOR are ahead of me still: the habitual snacking hour of the evening!, TV with remote in hand, handsome hubby the years long tradition of drinking a bottle (No, no not a mere GLASS) of red wine…then making a plate of snacks or popcorn…sigh…I’ve a cup of tasty Miso soup in hand… but I know if I take one drink of wine, it’ll be a slippery slope to a thousand+ calories.
Fingers crossed I’ve the discipline to finish the day on track and under 500 cal.

For lunch I made mePat his favorite Spaghetti Mariana Sauce made with with blanched fresh tomatoes, olive oil, onions, garlic, peppers, smoked chilies and Chorizio (from the neighbors pigs)…I nearly swooned right at the stove for the delicious smell of it…my knees were literally wobbling…(so can be the state of a TRUE food addict), then there was the fresh grilled garlic bread and salad picked from the garden…
…well boys ‘n girls, what can I say?….I ate….Yes, I did! 1/4 cup of hot Mariana sauce poured over 1-cup fresh lettuce and NO BREAD or PASTA!
We’ll see how the night goes…..

05h22 12/04/2016: Survived the gauntlet of the ‘lounge-in-the-evening’. Ate two corn ‘rice’ crackers with 1/2 avocado and salsa. Salty, crunchy and delicious. another cuppa fresh herb tea (from garden and the fields of wild thyme here) woke up like a child on Christmas morning and weighed myself. YES! YES! YES! over 1-kilo of fat gone, killed, smashed, destroyed never, EVER to return! YES meHappy! AAAAAANND it’s only Tuesday morning, weigh in day is Saturday in another 4-days. NO Chocolate Bavarian Creme cake with vanilla ice creme EVER felt as good being eaten as I feel right now.

I’ve been fat for a very long time, a very, VERY long time, over 20 years. I just stayed fat and sulked, looked only in face-mirrors, bought larger sized clothes, made-love in the dark and eventually lived in daily-pain from degenerating bones in the spine and bursitis and inflamed joints and on and on and on. I was ashamed of my body and let myself exasperate this pain in my sore body by carrying around over 20kg/44lbs of extra weight. Why?

Yesterday, I found a box of old photos of me climbing peaks in the Alps and cross country skiing in Austria for a full-day and even one of me dressed in a beautiful gown attending a formal ball in Munich. I was trim and healthy and even pretty looking. This was ONLY in my early 40s, WTF! Why did I DO this to myself? Dunno. But what I DO know is that making the decision to change and take control of my health and well being was the best thing I’ve done for myself in a long time. This is the 4th day of no pain medication of any kind. I walked 9,500 steps on my walk yesterday in addition to gardening and daily life and for once did not end up on the couch afterwards with my body in spasms. Enough now, I’m just happy today with my new Way of Life. Mindful Eating, regular Fasting and Exercise. Why not, eh?

Good luck everyone the results are well worth your efforts.

    Morning/evening all,

    Penti,
you are doing really well and I hope that the daily reminder of less or no pain after years of misery when moving helps to keep you motivated. Seeing and feeling an improvement as a result of doing something other than being unhappy about a situation is very empowering isn’t it?
What did you do with those old photos, did you put them back where you found them? Get them out and find a really nice one of you and stick it on the fridge door!
I have one of me on a beach in a swimming costume and it makes me pause for thought every time I go to the fridge. It has stopped me eating something I don’t need on many occasions.

It’s a nice morning here but this weeks forecast is not promising, lots of April showers.
I’m going to go to the gym this morning as my cough is much improved. I’ll take it easy and see what I can do. I am also going to fast today.

I’ve just finished reading Brain Maker by David Perlmutter which is a fascinating book about how our intestinal bacteria have an effect on the way our bodies function and our health. It also tells us how to ensure that our own intestinal bacteria are in good health.
Whoever first said “you are what you eat” was a very wise person.

Have a good one everybody 😜
I’m going to read the Obesity Code next.

Thanks Amazon, will do with photos, they are motivating for sure and so is being pain free. Yesterday, when we went for an off-path walk my husband praised me for being agile and my endurance. He said he can’t remember when last we ‘adventured’ AKA walked over hill ‘n dale together without me have having to return early because of pain.
Can it really be this simple to become healthy and be so very happy?

Amazon where in the planet are you?

Good morning all from a cold wet Scotland . Off to the hairdresser in a minute with boots and heavy jacket on . Just wanted to let you all know I am still here
. Jim due a heart scan before the go ahead for the op so just kind of taking things a day at a time . I still read all the posts every morning . Well done you guys . I am still doing my fasts . did a full day water only yesterday . before 5.2 I would eat everything in sight when I was stressed soooo Hopefully I am now controlling that . . I still have the odd ice cream but again I am not falling into a full tub . Most of the time anyway lol . My birthday on Saturday and I want to look my best so doing another water only tomorrow . I look back and bless the day I found this group .

    Love you all

    Wee xx

You are doing really well Wee. Not falling into a whole tub of ice cream is huge!!! I’m sure Jim will be fine. I can see his lovely smile and gorgeous blue eyes reassuring you.
You and Happy are both Aries. Enjoy your birthdays this week girls. πŸ˜† 🍨 (for Wee) 🍰 πŸŽ‚πŸŽ‚πŸŽˆπŸŽˆ P

Ps Pent Amazon is across the ditch from you….London

Kia ora Purple, you are in Wellington, yes?

Weenam good on you for resisting the TUB of ice cream…impressed with water only Fasting not quite there yet meself. During a routine annual check-up my ex was sent to hospital that very afternoon for a success quintuple heart bypasss surgery. He’s still doing well 22 years later. So good luck with your sweetie.

I am in 🌞 London today, it is a beautiful warm day πŸ™‚

I managed my gym routine without any coughing fits so am very pleased that I decided to give it a go. The fasting isn’t going well and I’ve given in gracefully. Yesterday was a complete disaster but the plus side is that there are no more HCBs lurking in the freezer to tempt me! I’m aiming for a more sensible approach today and the fact that I feel so much better should help me stick to half TDEE today. I’ve had some Bircher and am having a 300 calorie portion of veg chilli for dinner.

If at first you don’t succeed……

    Hi Wee 😍

    Penti

You have committed a faux pas par excellence. Purple is an Aussie (ie Gidday)

Barata and I are kiwis (in my case Qui-Oui) so Kia Ora.

However it’s not a bad faux pas- it’s dreadful to ask a kiwi if he/she is an Aussie as kiwis have a chip on each shoulder about that.

Secondly, on the rugby field the All Blacks are better than the Wallabies at present.

Thirdly, Aussies think they make better red wine, however NZ Church Rd Cabernet/Merlot/Malbeck roads make me pant.

    Let’s wait for Purple’s reaction.

    XX Wiwi

    Let’s wait for Purple’s reaction!

    Wink

PS reds not roads when it comes to wine. πŸ˜‰

Hi everyone, I’m trying to make sure I post at least once or twice a week at least until I get back into full swing πŸ˜€

Yesterday was the first successful fast day in a while … total 450 Cals but lots of herbal tea (black no sweetener) and in my new job although sitting a lot I also get to get up and move around whenever I want, there’s no restrictions on when I can move away from the desk and some of my work includes me moving a little as I also use the company ute to go pick up supplies and send items off in Express Post bags at the local post office.

Today is a TDEE day and I have saved enough for a couple of spoons of yoghurt to finish the day off IF I want, but I don’t have to have it if I still feel full (which I am at present) before bed in an hour or so.

Wee so glad to hear from you again, hugs to you for resisting the full container of icecream (sorry but tub reminds me of bath tub lol hahaha … please no disrespect to whoever said tub πŸ˜€ just my whacky sense of humour πŸ™‚ )

    Chat later πŸ˜€ … Cheers, AO πŸ˜€

    Hi Wiwi,

My current favourite red wine is from Puglia, but the previous best ever was from Marlborough and before that Clare Valley.

I’ll be in Rome on 7th until 13th. A couple of days sightseeing and two days at the tennis 😎

    Hi Oma 😊

    Morning All,
Amazon – I have been working on improving my gut bacteria, far too many anti biotics in the past have left my system very lax. I also still believe that it’s not all about the calorie count but digestible properties of foods eaten. You definitely are what you eat and drink. Sun shining here so I have just walked along the beach for half an hour before stopping for a cuppa. Still not up to an hour walk yet.
There are some interesting programmes on TV at the moment, about ageing. I think Sam always focussed his diet on longevity as opposed to weight loss. Hope he is doing well out there?

I slept well ( mostly) last night and am now taking painkillers regularly along with a very high fibre diet. Let’s hope this works? At least my spirits are lifted a little, non stop pain really gets you down.

Amazon- I think you can catch infections if you are in Steam Rooms with people who are there to sweat out their colds. I noticed I often got throat and chest problems after using the steam room at the gym so I stopped going. Shame because I loved it.

Off to get a flat tyre replaced, my luck is really not great at the moment.

No change on the scales here but not surprised as no fasting this week.

Ahhhh NOW I see/know OOPS? Gidday it is for the folks from OZ
…and yes the All Blacks are really REALLY great and are only shadowed by the incredible MUNSTER team. The ONLY Irish team that ever beat the All Blacks and my OH was there to witness this historic moment. The 12–0 victory took place on Tuesday 31 October 1978 at Thomond Park.

I thought NZ was SavBlanc county, yes? I prefer a deep dark read a 1986 Pommard from the Dijon area…back in the day when I did these kind of things, we set down 1-bottle per person at dinner ’cause finishing a bottle let you talk personally to Jesus..sigh

RED not ‘read’….now you’ve got me doing it

    Hi Jo,

I didn’t use the Steam room this morning as I didn’t want to give anyone else my germs πŸ˜†
I went shopping instead and came home with another linen skirt and a pair of cropped linen trousers. My summer wardrobe is now complete πŸ™‚

As for gut bacteria, I have been thinking about making some Kimchi for a while and not got round to it. I shall be researching recipes for it now as it is an excellent source of prebiotics.

Amazon….kimchi REALLY, my mother was born in Korea during the Japanese occupation and when my Omie and tantes all came over to visit as often as not they cooked Korean food and each brought their own version of kimchi….as they were a highly competitive group of German cooks. I have strong memories of falling asleep at nap-time to the exotic smell of kimchi, boiled ginger chicken infused with the rapid talking and chuckling of these sisters speaking in a ‘foreign’ language…. I’m gonna make some too. I think in one of my old cook books are some yellowed papers with kimchi family recipes… …..exciting

and for those of us on a NonFD : beati hispani quibus vivere bibere

    Hello,

All this talking about wine drives me nuts! See drinking wine @5pm it’s one of the causes of my extra 15 pounds. I called it my personal happy hour. It’s when I start cooking and with that I cook with it and drink too.Yesterday I fasted and my success depends on from Monday to Friday no alcohol allowed. It will be the the 5:2 Wine Diet. Of course I need to be careful how much on those days I drink as well. If I could only drink one glass a day, no problem but I already know I can’t.

From last year to now I mentioned to you guys that I have always guests coming and going or me coming or going and this sometimes can be very hard to keep your weight in place but didn’t give up on myself.

I do t see Fasting as a Diet at all! I thing it’s a WOL, healthy lifestyle!

Amazon I am a big fan of probiotics! I haven’t done my saurkraut this heat yet. We are in Florida but as soon as back to Connecticut I’ll be making a big batch. My kefir grains are already one year old. I make nice smoothies also a nice salad dressing with it. Kimchi uhmmmm, would like to try that one.

We just got back from Brazil for my big Five O on Easter Day. What a blessing! Easter its my favorite and God saved that date this year for me.

Right now getting the house ready to close and head north at the end of the Month and shopping around to meet a cousin from 7/14-22 in London. I am very excited except the fact can’t find cheap airfare.

Jojo I hope you feel better and everybody else xoxo.

    B

HealthCoachB, I cook the exact same way. I pour, then I pull out the cutting board. It’s a new discipline NOT to reach for a glass as I’m hanging up my coat. I am trying to limit to one on TDEE days and none on FDs.

Pentimento, a lovely Korean lady who owns a local market makes such fabulous kimchi, I just let her make it for me. Last night I made shrimp tacos with kimchi. OMG. I was very nice and left the rest for my hubby’s lunch.

Ha ha Wee. πŸ˜€πŸ˜€ Pretty good summation, I’d say. And, btw, my grandad was born (of Scottish parents) on your south island, but shot through pretty quickly πŸ˜‰

G’day Pent. I’m from Sydney, the alternate home to thousands of Kiwis. We don’t mind our little kiwi cousins enjoying our superior weather and lifestyle. 😊 Go Wallabies!

Regarding wine….a hot topic. Drink one glass during the meal and follow up with water. Put the wine bottle away so that it can’t be refilled. A glass of wine is only 120 cals and doesn’t cause undue issues with blood sugars (unlike beer, cider and “soft” drinks ).
I try to drink local wherever I am in the world. Always try to support local economies. Never drink NZ wine unless I’m in NZ!!

Well done AO. You are back on the horse!!!

Amazon, have you tried kefir to adjust gut bacteria?

    Travelling again today…must go. P

Hi back Amazon :).PVE you are right pal he does have a lovely smile xx
Pentimento . Thank you so much . Jim had a triple bypass 10 years ago and , This time is open surgery for an aneurysm .He is strong for his age pal and I am sure he will be fine .

RT I am missing your jokes pal . I seem to have fallen off your list pal πŸ™ . But I still read the posts every day .

Jojo I am glad you are improving pal . I had the op about 50 years ago. I have a scar about 10 inches long and was in hospital for ages . Modern surgery is wonderful .. hello everyone else . Take care all

Sun is out…crisp spring morning, but exhausted as a rat in the rafters began to chew something above my head starting a 02h15…three times I got up hit ceiling with broom, each time he paused only until I pulled back up the covers, meOH dressed, got ladder and slammed things onto the roof. He finally stopped…damn tired and irritable so no FD today AND the lazy cat sleeps in the rafters tonight. This is a typical Portuguese home with sharp pitched tiled roof and the ceiling mirrors the roof line and is made of cane. The rat infestation in these old houses is notorious. But so it goes,
Each day I don’t wake up as a bride of an ISIS fighter is a good day.

    Morning/evening all,

    Another warm, sunny morning.

Purple, I was looking at a list of foods that are good for prebiotics and thought it was a good reason to get round to trying kimchi. I’m not particularly worried about my gut bacteria and I eat many of the foods on the list. I make my own yogurt using organic whole milk and I eat a wide variety of foods the majority of which are unprocessed and if not eaten raw, cooked from scratch.

Having done a lot of reading recently regarding foodstuffs and the detrimental effect some of them have on our bodies, along with cutting carbs down I’m considering going gluten free. I can continue to bake a loaf of bread or the occasional cake using gluten free products, and it is an excellent way of refusing things when not at home without causing offence.

My cough is almost gone, YIPPEE!!!!!!!

Off to the gym then meeting a friend for coffee πŸ˜€

Have a good one everybody 😜

    Good Morning Everone,
    Wow, busy thread!
Amazon- Good Luck with eating out Gluten Free, you are in the right place ‘London’ where alternative food choices are always available. Not sure if Japanese food will meet the requirements though?
Strange how we all have our different weaknesses, I can easily control wine quantity but bread is just best avoided. If it’s in the house it will be eaten by me.
Boredom and innactivity has been a real issue for me tis past 10 days but I am finally seeing the light of day. Motivation and Activity level increasing and pain in control. I am even intending to gently put a Hoover around my lounge and hall. With two dogs is essential especially after 10 days. Stomach wounds are healed well externally, looks no more than a cat scratch. Wee- yes surgery has really moved on! My sister had her gallbladder out in her 30’s and was in hospital for three weeks then convalescing for 6 weeks. She was a nurse who at that time was involved in lifting patients daily as she specialised in Geriatrics.
I went to my first (Bridge Class) last night. Three real Academics in the group. I really enjoyed it and won all my contracts. It’s such a complicated game in terms of bidding and scoring but so enjoyable. The teacher has been playing for 40 years and he is excellent. His style and personality are ideal, patient, kind and understanding. Learn through doing and discusses possible options and outcomes. Addictive hobby me thinks! He also teaches Modern languages so he is a useful contact, I may even take up French again as I have two friends studying with him.
Not planning to fast until next Monday but working on controlling boredom eating by keeping busy with chores, especially paperwork and planning my garden for summer.
    Have a great day!

    Two points Amazon.
Other than sometimes restricting the availability of flour based food, unless you are actually gluten intolerant, gluten free diets aren’t any healthier and are significantly more expensive. Might as well chose proper sourdough with lots of grains and only a few slices a week.
Kefir has a significantly greater range of active pro/prebiotics than yoghurt. It seems gut bacteria is hugely important, so not a bad (and simple) way of getting ahead I feel.

You are sounding chirpier Jo 😊
    Night…P

    Hi everyone,

I had a great morning at the gym and then met a friend for coffee. The sun is still shining and it has turned into a lovely spring day.

I’m going to try using some different types of flour for bread making and baking and see how it goes. It will be an interesting experiment if nothing else.
I shall also be trying my hand at making kimchi. Kefir may follow……..

As for whether gluten free is healthier or not, it would seem that like most things opinion is divided and I did say I was thinking about it not that I’m going to do it!

Jo, you sound much more cheerful than a few days ago. I’m glad that your recovery is going well if a little slower than you would like.

I did day earlier that I’m not particularly concerned about the health/diversity of my gut bacteria but it is something I’m interested in.

Mr P spent many years eating gluten free foods. He now has my homemade wholemeal wheat based sourdough with lots of variety of grains in it. Every loaf is unique. He eats 1 small slice about 4 times a week. It keeps for weeks in the fridge. He also has 1/3 cup of homemade kefir and some natural yoghurt most days. He can now tolerate eating wheat in many foods but, of course, since 5:2, our white carb intake is massively reduced.
My big concern with gluten free flours is that they are highly processed/refined, so do not offer the benefits of coarse grained flours. No different to eating white flour, white rice etc. A bit like the fruit juice v whole fruit argument.
This whole journey is marvellous for encouraging us to experiment, isn’t it? Have fun with your investigations, Amazon. And enjoy the awakening of the northern Spring. πŸŒ·πŸŒΈπŸŒΉπŸ€πŸŒ»πŸŒΌ
I’m off to have a last surf before the temps drop here. P 🐳🌊

    Hi Purple,
I hope you avoided the sharks and had a lovely time in the surf!
Your bread sounds mouth watering, esp on a fast day! Tell me, I am curious, is Mr P actually Coeliac or simply wheat (and gluten) intolerant? I am sure he would not be eating any wheat products if he was Coeliac, even if no symptoms. I am certain you know this, but I would not want a ‘casual’ reader of this thread to think it was ok for a coeliac person to eat gluten. Even with no symptoms, the gluten can do a lot of serious damage to the villi in the gut.
RT you are such a gentleman for not mentioning your teams glory as against my teams disgrace last weekend!! The Adelaide Crows look like a force to be reckoned with this year.
Great to hear from you AO, well done on no weight gains with the past months you have had. And congratulations on regaining employment so quickly.
Pleased to hear Jojo and Amazon both on the mend, you would both be going stir crazy as such exercise addicts! I would not want surgery or a nasty chest bug, but if someone told me I could not exercise for a few weeks I would not mind!! Just naturally lazy I think.

Purple, another question! I forgot to ask – I am going to make some kefir after reading up on it – is there a particular ‘brand’ of the grains you recommend? Ta..

    Hi Nama
Had our swim. Lying in the sand (literally) under a shady tree. Gentle breeze. Chatty granddaughter playing next to me. ☺

As I said, “unless you are gluten intolerant”, going gluten free is not a healthier option. People seem to think it is healthier for “normal” people.
Mr P was gluten intolerant for 20 years (at least), but not full blown coeliac. Clearly I’m not talking about coeliac diets.

The kefir and sourdough (and perhaps fasting) have allowed him to widen his range of grains. Soy is still a significant no no.

One son has given up all grains (very difficult in practice ) to cure his hayfever. It has worked for him.

Re kefir grains, we bought our milk kefir grains from the ‘net. Can’t remember which though. Sorry. They travel with us on holidays…they like the sea air πŸ˜‰

Hope you are enjoying this gorgeous warm weather too. P

Thanks Purple, sounds like heaven where you are! Warm here too, but just off to a one hour dentists appt!!

Lovely and warm if not a little balmy even today 26deg very pleasant indeed a fast day done on water and black coffee now for a lovely Thai beef salad for my dinner straight from the 5-2 book. I am sure the pie faithful will enjoy the home game on Sunday over the Dee’s at the β€œG” early markets think that way $1.45 very short for them and the crows are $2-00 over the Swans I will have to have a small wager I think the crows player group have all stepped up this year and not missing Dangerfield at all at the present time and are playing good consistent 4 quarter footy.

    Morning/evening all,

Purple, I am looking forward to experimenting with my baking and pickling, I’m sure there will be some disasters that go into the compost bin but there will be some delicious and hopefully healthy results.
    How long does kefir keep?

I slice and freeze bread but it is like a time bomb ticking away, I know it is there calling to me. I’ve eaten much less since Easter than I used to so giving it up for Lent definitely helped. I’ve also noticed that the smell emanating from the bakery section in the supermarket is less enticing than it used to be, so I’m getting somewhere.

Fasting has been off the menu this week but I am feeling much better and ready to get going again. I’m out for the day today so will probably have dinner out this evening and fast tomorrow, but if my friend doesn’t want to eat out, today will be a FD too.

Have a good one everybody 😜

    Good morning All,
Nama and PVE – so jealous of your good weather but can’t now complain as
had a lovely summery day out yesterday, no cardigan needed, drugged up and pain free. Visited a Charity ‘garden project’ initiated through our ‘health service’ to support patients suffering mental illness or incapacity. The site is about an acre plot and the ‘clients’ and ‘volunteers’ grow and sell (and use themselves) a wide range of bulbs, flowers, shrubs, trees and fruit/ veg. They have their own pizza oven and tea/ coffee making facilities. They made us pumpkin and herb pizza, a first for me. Their living wall was a thing of beauty. We had a guided tour from one of the clients. Poor girl trying to explain everything to 30 chatty lady gardeners. They recycle wooden delivery crate in their carpentry workshop into excellent rustic outside tables and benches. They cut and bag up wood to sell for wood burning stoves. I bought 6 runner beans plants for a donation of Β£5. I am now busy spreading the word through my network to donate them pots/seed trays and old compost bags. A very worthwhile cause and proven benefits especially for clients suffering from depression.

I am getting a good nights sleep now which is making a lot of difference, certainly feel ‘chirpier’ love that phrase. However without pain relief I still feel my ribcage is being crushed. Just need to wait it out and stay away from lifting. I borrowed a lightweight vacuum and am now determined to buy one, great sucking power, a dream to use.

Nama- I don’t really do that much exercise these days, I did not rejoin the gym after my return from my Australia and NZ trip. I don’t think bowls (5 times per week)really qualifies as exercise, it’s very slow. Pre operation I just did daily hour ( minimum)walking and lifting kettlebells 3 times per week( currently not of course). I haven’t even sorted out a new yoga teacher as I am checking out the best ones. I plan to join a ‘keep fit’ class on Monday nights when I am up to it. The thing about bowls is that it is very time consuming and leaves little time for the gym, I enjoy the social and competitive side of bowls more that classes at the gym. I do miss the pool though.

I have a cross trainer, skipping rope and trampet gathering dust which I hope to get back to eventually. It’s very difficult to train yourself to do ( home) exercise. I live in a big house which provides quite a lot of exercise just keeping it clean, the gardening gives me quite a workout too(1/3 acre), lots of grass.

Currently eating a very high fibre diet, controlling calorie count at 1200, fasting next week as hoping to feel as good as new by then. If not, I will take another week off to recouperate before resuming life as I know it, busy but fun. I don’t cope well with sitting still, it’s true, but I can be lazy. I have an armchair full of clothes in my bedroom just waiting to be hung up. I have a pile of papers in my office waiting to be filed. But I would rather be walking or doing some light ‘potting up’ jobs in the greenhouse. Really fed up with TV now.

Chat tomorrow, enjoy your fasts everyone!
If you are feeling poorly I hope you recover quickly.

    Hello fasters

Interesting discussions going on about fermented foods, and also gluten-free options.
Purple, do you use organic wholewheat flours? In France you have to be careful of wholegrain products because of the insecticides which they put on and don’t remove before processing.

Now 10 days on the BSD, and the news on the weight front is good. I have lost 1.6 kgs which seems a bit too much, but is what the scales say. I am now counting down to maintenance – 8.1 kg to goal weight (middle of the range). Michale Moseley says you can lose 10% of bodyfat in 8 weeks on this and that’s my goal.
Still off red wine which is still sad. I don’t mind the deprivation of flour or sugar.

Off to Lyon for the weekend to meet up with my two daughters, coming from London and Rome. The younger girl is off to live in Chile on Sunday and I feel happy for her and sad for us. If the UK leaves Europe, she may have become persona non grata there anyway.

Beautiful day here, but so much snow around still. The garden is very spring-like.

Penti, I lived for years with mice disturbing my sleep. They were in the ceiling here too as the insulation was straw, but the worst was one night a group found a pingpong ball and were pushing it around. This house is stone, but not mouse-proof.

Today is a fast day and although fast days are little different from any 800 cal BSD day, I will not eat before the evening making it a 400 cal day.

Good on you Aussie Oma, mintaining fasts and starting a new job.

Glad things are getting better, Jojo. You sound better, Amazon. too.

    Talk soon

Hi folks, again I repeat such smart interesting news and information on this thread. Reading it is my ‘work-break’ reward.

Jojo glad to hear your feeling better. Any body intrusion can be exhausting and painful.

Today I put on ‘town’ clothes (vs gardening/hiking), tried on 3-dresses all hung loose, so loose that I couldn’t wear them until they’re altered. All alone in my bedroom my private 4meonly smile was so big it hurt mecheeks. And yesterday my OH just off the cuff said … “Hon, I just realized that you haven’t been to the doctor since the start of the new year. First time in 5-years that you’re not sore enough to go into the clinic at least once a month” We both sat at the kitchen table and mused about this for a bit…. pleased…kinda like suckin’ on a butterscotch candy.

Steppin’ out in town this morning, I felt like a million bucks! The sky is bluer, the leaves greener, the breeze sweeter. If I’d known this sense of happiness and tangible well-being would be the result of embracing this 5:2 WOL, well, I’d have done it sooner. Yes I would have. Day-5 no pain medication or anti-inflamments BECAUSE I don’t hurt. Thank you all for being my support and inspiration directly and thru osmosis. Good luck and ‘bon courage’ to all of you!

Tired granny. Off to bed early. ..
Amazon, you only make as little or as much kefir as you need. It can be slowed down in the fridge or put on hold in the freezer. Fresh, it lasts at least 4 days in the fridge. I’ve never tried longer.

Wi, I try to buy organic wholemeal. Not always possible. Like everything, it is SO hard to ensure you are sourcing the best in foodstuffs. πŸ˜• P

Amazon, I’m a breadaholic too, find it hard to have it anywhere in the house. So right off it and if I feel cravings for it I eat an oat biscuit (Nairnshire and a few other makes have no wheat in) with butter and a piece of cheese and the craving for bread goes. I’ve just been reading The Obesity Code, it’s a good interesting read and makes some good points in addition to the excellent YouTube lectures.

I’m not gluten intolerant but do get quite bad reflux after bread or potatoes, so 5:2 and lower carb have helped. Invented some delicious little cakes for a gluten intolerant friend this week without using gluten free flour. They used oat bran, nuts, seeds and coconut flour all ground in a processor, spiced with ground ginger, mixed spice and a little crystallised ginger, lightened up with baking powder and some Olive oil or butter as shortening. I added a whole egg and a little soft cheese and milk, a little honey as sweetening, then put in cupcake cases and baked. They are fairly high protein and fat, with a lower ratio of carb. No good on a fast day, but very appetite quenching on other days, and travel easily.

    Good Morning/Night,

The weather here Southwest Florida is nice and hot. My husband Reyes to do the yard word mostly in the mornings. Mornings also is when we walk ourselves and Sasha otherwise it’s really warm. Although from time to time we see people jogging at noon. Well, not for me I would faint.

Little by little organizing our house as we every year however we still have company coming.
The first group comes tomorrow which is my step daughter and 3 girlfriend but staying at her sisters which lives also here in Town. Next week my cousin and husband are staying for 5 days. I really don’t like company towards the end of our season here. I am trying to empty the fridge and freezer so it’s always a dilemma when we are feeding our guests.

I did fast Monday without any problems! Today I had in mind also but best is when all the guests are not around. I will try to eat healthy and very choosy with my food and wine intake. I have no problem fasting at all! It’s just A matter of logistics between guests and traveling.

Kefir – i purchased my grains on a “fermented food” seminar I attended last year. Every morning I make my smoothie with some strawberries and banana. They need attention though. Watch out because the calories can pile up. I prefer 2% milk to keep it low.

Sending good vibes to everyone! It’s a wonderful feeling when the clothes are lose. Some of mine can’t fit me but I will get back inside them again.

    Xoxo
    B
