  • Thanks Nama, I will check them out

    Hello Everyone,
I started reading everyone’s posts and decided to just to report where am at.
I had a wonderful trip to Ventura, we have been planning this for the last two years. Stayed at a house 100 yards from the beach. We took my mom, my son and his girl friend, met my other son and his wife there, along with my brother and his family. So a total of 11 happy people with a week at the beach. Food was amazing. Of course I am fasting today, and will figure out the damage tomorrow.
I would recommend Ventura for a vacation, and I will go back, but probably camping, renting a house for a week was a little expensive for me. It was a once in a life time vacation. My mom’s Alzheimers made the trip very interesting and memorable.
I did get lots of exercise and went into the water for several of the days. I even was able to go to the Santa Barabra Zoo, Whale Watching, and bike riding. The fourth of July fire works on the beach lasted for hours.
I am sharing because I read everyone’s posts and enjoy learning about different places to go.

    Hi Sarah103 and all
I am heading for Santa Barbara with my family in 10 days, so I was happy to read you had a great time. We are having some problems with our vacation rental (not as advertised), but have another place lined up a block from the beach. Just hoping to get a full refund. Meanwhile I’m planning to fit in 3 or 4 fast days.
    Was the ocean very cold?

Sarah, your trip sounds amazing! How wonderful to have all the generations together and enjoying each other and the beach! I am envious! Any damage on the scale seems well worth it!

    Hi All,

I think RT and Nama have fasted for longer periods, and you liquid only fasters are on your way, so the following may be interesting.

    http://www.theguardian.com/books/2015/jul/11/jeanette-winterson-why-i-fasted-11-days

It also includes a link to a fasting clinic in Europe. Intriguing.

    Happynow,
Interesting article, nothing new but all very clearly explained. To fast for more than three days requires medical supervision so it is unlikely to be available for many of us.
I would be happy to try a three day fast if anyone else is up for it. I certainly still need to lose weight and what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
I went to a celebration dinner last night( my friend joined a wine appreciation society)five courses over three hours, far too much food. I had to put the crispy duck in a bag for my dogs. Sadly it was too well done, quite chewy. There were two or three choices of each course.
I had quail eggs on asparagus with rocket salad and Parmesan shavings, poached salmon on potato cake, crispy duck with baby veg, cheese board and finally coconut cheesecake with banana ice cream and raspberry coulis. Far too much food and 6 different wines, I just had a splash of each and lots of water. Luckily my fluid fast has ensured I didn’t put any weight on from my low yesterday but I feel sluggish and very full still this morning. I watched as most people around me got drunk, sadly no dancing available. I have decided I won’t attend any more of these events, just not for me these days, I prefer more active evening out. The best bit for me was the dressing up and enjoying seeing the men in their finery, dinner jackets and bow ties, they looked great.
Sarah – Ventura sounds wonderful. You are lucky your family are so close. I see my brother every 6 months but I have three other brothers and sisters I only see at weddings and funerals. I see my daughter almost daily but she is emigrating in October. I see my son at least monthly and its on the cards for him to emigrate to the states next year. It’s at times like this I am grateful for my thread and large circle of friends. I live five minutes from the beach so in that respect I am also very lucky.
Life is what you make it, I remain positive most of the time and enjoy socialising mostly through sporting activities like bowls, badminton and the gym.
Walking today then lunch out, Carribean food, makes a change.
I have more people viewing the flat today, I had to turn down my nice Australian chap as he wanted to sublet to 4 overseas teenagers( studying English) into one large double room. I don’t think that would be very fair to my elderly infirmed neighbours downstairs. Lots of people in this area make a business out of taking foreign students into their homes. There isn’t much work in the area so it’s a good option and usually quite interesting culturally. The world comes to you.
Liquid fast again on Monday, Wednesday and Friday next week. 19/5 on other days 1200 calories.

    Hi everyone

Congratulation on your PB results. It’s great to see. πŸ˜†

I think it’s time to tell all newbies that we all began this WOL on regular 5:2 intermittent fasting as described in Michael Mosleys book. It’s only after we had mastered regular 5:2 fasting and lost a lot of weight that we began to experiment with 19/5 and liquid fasts.

If a newbie tries to begin with a multi day fast or a liquid only fast or a limited eating window, it’s possible they’re setting themselves up to fail.

    Cheers, Bay πŸ™‚

Sorry, I of course meant to write that Wiwi has done a longer fast..

Nothing new maybe, jojo, but might be for newbies. And thought provoking.

Interesting that you say longer fasts requiring medical supervision are unlikely to be available for many of us. Strictly speaking, I expect they could be if that was a priority to you. You go on a lot of holidays jojo, so it isn’t as though you couldn’t afford to go to a fasting clinic if you wanted/ needed to, Why would you consider a couple of weeks in a clinic on a lake shore in Germany to be any different or any less accessible for example than going for a yoga retreat?

Good point Bay! Many of us here are of course months if not years into intermittent fasting. Easy to forget that might not be obvious to newbies…

Thanks Bay and all! I’ve only done 2 days fasting so far, I want to get into the swing of the 5:2 and see where that takes me before stepping it up if I feel I would benefit. This week I had FDs on Monday and Thursday. Found I under-ate on the Tues/Wed, not deliberate, and then over-ate on Friday, but by no means a blow-out, and then couldn’t sleep and felt bleurgh! So until I can hit that rhythm and it feels right I’ll lurk about here and get some ideas for later on πŸ™‚

Started at the end of April 2015 and still doing the basic 5:2 format and went from 139 to 125 lb in 9 weeks and successfully maintaining at about 123 lb two weeks later. Happy with this format and as I like to be able to eat when I want on non-fast days I’m planning to stick to the two Fast Days per week for the health benefits and slowly add 100 calories per day on the others to keep round about the 125 lb mark.

Good to read about other forms of IF and the windows approach does seem very popular – the main thing is to do what suits you and then you are more likely to keep it up in the long term.

    Morning all.
Happy, thanks for the link. Food (or not) for thought.
This is a very interesting article regarding coeliac disease, gluten intolerance and why gluten should not be omitted unless necessary and without the help of a dietician due to the nutrients and vitamins it provides

Loved the article, Happy, thanks for sharing.

Bay leaf, you are so right with that reminder! I might have left the forum for good if I had read about 19:5 and 44 hour fasts when I started! Those ideas sounded crazy to me back then!

    Hi Ply,

I think it’s interesting to hear real people’s experience and perspective on fasting, and not just results of clinical trials.

I don’t really need to fast to maintain my weight, and I’m not sure one fast day every few weeks is particularly beneficial. At some point I am going to have to take the plunge and embark on more serious fasting. The question is what though?!

Interesting that it seems to be the case that fasting beyond 5:2 should not be something you try and do as part of normal life, and benefits will be greatest if you can lay around and not over-exert for the duration! Could be challenging for those of us who need to keep busy to distract from the temptation to eat!

The 11 day fast sounds fascinating. The most interesting comment that Jeanette made was that after the third day she felt fine, had no hunger and was able to exercise. It would seem that once the body has worked out that it needs to feed itself from within and makes the transition to ketosis it is able to cope with the normal rigours of life.
My Friday liquid fast didn’t go according to plan but I’ll just try again on Tuesday.
I didn’t eat until late afternoon yesterday which wasn’t difficult so I think that will be the long term plan when going out to eat and I know I’ll be tempted. I ate a lot but probably about a quarter of what I would have eaten pre 5:2. I have finally mastered recognising when I’m full and some of that is due to eating more slowly than previously, but I’ve also got the willpower to stop and not continue out of nothing more than greed.
I’m not at goal yet and am going through a major struggle, but I know I can and will succeed eventually.

    Hi everyone
Sorry for the silence, but having our woofers has made my life hectic and very energetic- not even enough time to sleep.
I will catch up with your posts and then comment.

Yes I did the FMD once without great problems 1000 clsX 1 day, 500 X 3 days. In fact JoJo, I am starting tomorrow to do this again. 1000cals tomorrow and then 3 days on 500cals. Wanna join me?
I have all the family arriving on Friday, and the woofers are leaving tomorrow, so the window for serious fasting is short.
I will be more communicative this week until thye family arrive.
    XX Wiwi

Amazon, that is what struck me as well…she was going to the gym! Happy, I didn’t get the idea that it is most beneficial to lay around while fasting?

Anyway, I find the whole idea of longer term fasting quite fascinating, but I don’t foresee myself going beyond about 44 hours unless my husband goes away for a week so I could totally focus on myself.

Happy, I am also thinking forward to maintenance and how the fasting will work then. I have been so focused on weight loss that even my feeding days are pretty low in calories, which I think the 19:5 takes care of quite easily. When I no longer want to lose, which will be soon, how to transition yet still get the health benefits of fasting? The health benefits are mainly invisible to me, since I have no chronic health issues, and all my numbers have always been fine. Maybe the FMD? Fasting for a longer period once a month?? We shall see.

I go to the gym the morning after a FD and I don’t have a problem with that but I’m always really hungry afterwards, and a fast day dinner isn’t enough. It would be great to be able to do both on the same day.
Maybe fasting for longer periods would be good for maintenance and resetting everything.

    Good afternoon all,
Djokovic just won Wimbledon final, really good game against Federer, both players were terrific to watch.

    Bayleafoz

I agree with everything you say. As a starter it is good to stick to 5:2.

I started making diet changes when I didn’t get the results I wanted e.g. 2 lb per week loss. Many Fasters are happy with small losses. I started by restricting non fast days to 1200 because I discover that this was my limit. Observed through daily recording and weighing. I then cut carbs such as bread, rice and pasta but kept a small amount of potato usually in soup. After this I cut out sugar but kept fruit as a natural sweet food. Then came Back to Back fasts- effective in weightloss but I found I over ate on non fast days thereby yoyoing. Next I started restrictive hours, probably the most effective long term daily change I have made. Finally I have just begun to experiment with fluid only fasting- it took 3 attempts to suceed 24 hours but I believe I can take this on board for a couple of months (3 fasts per week, alternate weekdays)alternating days. I am not prepared to exceed a three day trial as I know this can lead to medical problems, in particular gall stones(not worth the risk). These changes I have undertaken have been over an 18 month period. Any of these changes would have been unthinkable in the first three months on 5:2. Do not under-estimate the challenge of 5:2 in the first three months. I suffered irritability, feeling very cold and headaches for nearly 12 weeks.

Happynow- I am not interested in going to a Health Farm but thanks for the suggestion anyway. Not my idea of a fun holiday. Have you tried one?
As for having lots of holidays- I have studied and worked hard for 40 years, sometimes doing three jobs at the same time, no career breaks even when I had children, I saved hard so that I could enjoy my retirement and travel. Who knows how long I will live, I am living my dream now before it is too late.

The beautiful thing about a fast life is the study of one so I am building some data on myself for example I seem to bounce around the 3kg variance now just depending on the eating and drinking occasions πŸ˜‰ and I always have 19/5 daily and 5-2 Mon –Thu is a standard template that keeps me in-between 71kg and 68kg as a rule with the rain and cold my steps have stopped so to balance that I to shred some extra fat kg I have to include another fast day and what is the result of doing that over time now that I am in the healthy BMI range at 68kg its 21.5 and at 71kg 22.4 and what is a comfortable fit for me I did not want to be muscular like SAMM I am happy to be a lean and toned RT so I have no intention of getting under that Nama I just like the personal challenge of knowing I can do it and how to push the right buttons or pull the right levers for me if that makes any sense? I read the forward to the 5-2 Diet Book again over the weekend and Mimi Spencer weighed 60kg and had a BMI of an ok 21.4 😯 at the start β€œbut now is a convert and an evangelist at 54kg and a BMI of 19.4 feels light lean and alive Fasting has become a part of my weekly life something I do automatically without stressing about it.”
β€œI’m doing the best for my body and my brain”
And so say of all of us.
Imagine how stoked she would be by dropping 20kg Nama like you have done a huge congratulations on yet another PB to by the way.
I have to go to Adelaide today and the hire car I picked up yesterday is a Mitsubishi Mirage a clown car 😳 how bloody embarrassment a four banger and the tyres/wheels are off a wheel barrow I suspect πŸ™„ where is the Chrysler 300 I usually take?? In for a service I am Not Amused it will be a long trip through the beautiful Adelaide Hills Nicky and AO ps where are you Emel I do hope all is well for you?.

    Happy fast day people.

    Jojo,

You don’t have to justify to me what you do with your hard earned money!

You made a generalization about the accessibility of medical supervision during longer fasts for most people. I was just pointing out, using you as an example, that if you can afford foreign holidays then you could afford a spa break if you so chose.

And as to whether or not it is your idea of ‘fun’ (and I seem to remember that you weren’t raving about your holiday in Turkey? πŸ™‚ ), the following article reviews the same therapeutic fasting clinic.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/lifestyle/wellbeing/healthadvice/11528451/Spa-Spy-Buchinger-Wilhelmi-Clinic-for-Therapeutic-Fasting-and-Integrative-Medicine-berlingen-Germany.html

Striking that the review concludes ‘I depart the clinic feeling better, happier and more positive than I have for years. It has been, I believe, the best possible investment in my health’. Sounds like one hell of a holiday to me πŸ™‚

Read your Spa (Health Farm)link Happynow-not tempted in the least, still not for me. Not justifying myself just replying to your post.

Tanga- Sorry Wiwi I won’t be joining you on your FMD, other plans this week but good luck.

Ply- you will cope well with maintenance on 19/5 and possibly one fast as needed.

    Jojo,

That’s fine, I wasn’t trying to convince you personally to go!

Just pointing out it’s just a holiday, and probably the best one you (sorry, one) would ever go on…at least in terms of the after effects if not the experience πŸ™‚

    Hi All,

I will be off line for 5 days as I won’t have wifi, being disconnected at my flat tomorrow also I need to help my friend with her husbands funeral arrangements for 21st, it will be a very big turn out at the bowls club, could be 200 people.

Hope you all have a good week, keep posting.

I hope to report 4 lbs down next week after three fluid fasts.

As you say RT – better to avoid eating than limit it( well on fluid fast days anyway)

    Hi Happy

Thanks for the link to the two articles on fasting. I found them both very interesting.

    Cheers, Bay πŸ™‚

Hello to all my friends every where in the world.
Reading all the familiar posts by people here gives me warm and fuzzy feelings.
Mulville- the water was not too bad, I had a wet suit on.
Jo-jo, one of goals this summer is to do a three day water, broth, tea, coffee, fast. I keep looking at the calendar. I am home the next two weeks. Then I am gone again. I would like to be home on the last day of the fast. So I need to plan carefully. Also jo-jo I love that you are enjoying retirement. My dad has been retired for a year and he is amazing. He started taking yoga classes, water color classes, walking tours, and joined two societies.
Shazzeh- Welcome, you are going to love it here. This past March I started the 5:2 and stuck with it for three months before trying anything different. This works. I am at my goal weight. Also for the first time in 30 years I did not gain a pound on vacation. Even after eating fish and chips, ice cream, somores, chocolate, two to three meals a day and lots of peanut butter. My goal weight is now my set point!!!
RT- have a good trip, sorry it is not your dream car, I know my son rented a dodge challenger and he thought it was the coolest thing ever, since he had to drive around in a mini van for 10 years.

Fasting Holiday in Germany… it is quite coincidental but I was googling that earlier this summer. It might be 15 years away, but it intrigues me, my life gets so busy. Hiking and fasting in my opinion would be wonderful. I need to plan another backpacking trip… I like being away… I like being home… I like traveling..

    Take care everyone
    Sending out Hugs

    Hi all,

Thanks for the articles Happy and Amazon, I just skimmed them as busy but look forward to reading them properly cuppa in hand. They both look really interesting! And I wish they had fasting spas in Aus Happy! Dianne Cilento’s place and Olivia N-J have similar places in Far North Qld, but I would need to sell some real estate to afford them! Guess it has to be ‘home made’ fasting for me!!

Sarah your holiday does sound lovely. Beach, sun and family sharing, heaven! I missed your lovely words around here though.

Wiwi good luck with your latest epic effort with the FMD, great you can fit it into your busy life! Your garden must be looking even more fabulous by now.

RT have fun in the ‘big smoke’ today! Shame about the noddy car, make sure you peddle hard going up those hills! Glad to hear you are just experimenting with fasts now, we dont want you too skinny! Nicky should be on the ski slopes by now, or at least eating something sticky with her grandchildren! Lucky her….

Amazon, your life can get back to normal now! Hopefully you don’t have withdrawal after all the excitement of Wimbledon. Sorry you are finding fasting a struggle at the moment. But you have no intention of giving up do you, so you will get there. All of us put on our weight very slowly, now that its coming off we forget how insidiously it crept on. But surely its better to just tread water some weeks and lose in tiny increments, than to go back to our old ways. (says the impatient one!) I know I won’t and I know you wont.

We are away at the moment and eating out every night, which is interesting. (and lovely!) We had a nice Thai meal last night, healthy and light apart from my favourite coconut rice! I did manage to leave half of it, with great effort! Concentrated on the pork and the veggies instead. Couldn’t have done that 6 months ago.
I am fasting today but wont attempt 24 hrs, so will aim for some seafood and salad wherever we eat tonight. The chocolate in the hotel mini bar smiled slyly at me, so I moved it out of sight and told it to get lost! The travel scales are wonderful (thanks Purple!), great peace of mind!

We will miss you Jojo, but will try to behave in your absence. I hope the funeral goes smoothly. Your friend is lucky to have your support. Good luck with the fluid fasts, you can do it!

I need to get moving, cheers all xx

Hi. Been awol playing in snow. πŸ˜†

Wee, sorry to hear about your lumps, but as everyone says, far better to check than worry. All the best.

Nama, now that the kids are gone and you are saving so much on food bills, I’m sure you can squirrel away enough for one of those fancy fasting places. A girlfriend of mine goes to one in Queensland and loves it.

Totally agree, Bay. Basic 5:2 is possible long term because it is not too taxing, once it is mastered. Make eating patterns more complex and it is easier to give up. This has to be a comfortable doable cycle to make life long changes.

Now to wash all the ski gear to avoid eating…. P

    Morning/evening all

My take on the fasting clinic is that it would be a positive experience and beneficial but is very expensive (I checked out the tariffs)It is interesting that Mosley et al all suggest that long term fasting should not be undertaken without medical supervison yet it is possible to buy liquid diet plans eg Cambridge diet that only give 300 calories per day.
In my opinion it is a much smaller step for someone who has lived with 5:2 4:3 or ADF and gone without solids on fast days regularly than for someone who has never fasted. It would be an excellent idea to have blood pressure taken every day, but I would consider trying it without spending several thousand pounds.
Having said that, I’m having enough trouble sticking to 5:2 at the moment and it is all to do with bereavement and nothing to do with willpower or the desire to shed all the excess weight and be as fit and healthy as possible. I’ll just keep plodding along and everything will work out with time. Nama you are right, I have no intention of giving up, I’ve come too far for that to happen.

Time to go to the gym, have a good day/evening everyone.

Enjoy the gym Amazon. We’ll still be here for you πŸ˜‰ P

    Hi Sarah,

Re: fasting and hiking, and SPA break might be 15 years away. You’ve given me an idea! I could treat myself for my 60th birthday! That’s 14 years, and I’m highly unlikely to have retired by then, but what better way to set myself up for a happy healthy old age? I’d best start saving πŸ™‚ Although who knows, by then there might be fasting clinics everywhere.

    Amazon,

Be gentle and kind to yourself. I read that it can take four years to get over a major bereavement and, having lost my Mum a few years back, I can well believe that. Life goes on I know, but it will have been a major shock to your system.

As P says, take your time, no one’s going anywhere… Or if that’s a bit scary… hurry up and run away! πŸ™‚

Thanks for the kind words. I am doing my best to be good to myself and take one day at a time but some days are more difficult than others as most of you will understand. I’ll get there eventually.

    Was it something I said……… πŸ˜‰

    Hi Amazon!

Just off to bed, nothing to report πŸ™‚

Hi everyone, Jojo your meal with friends a day or so ago does sound quite excessive. But for someone on a fast like I was today it sounded very very desirable and gave me a little lift of pleasure to read it πŸ™‚ I am definitely going to get some quails eggs and asparagus soon, not things I usually have in the cupboard πŸ™‚ I also wanted to say that I am having acupuncture at the moment and it really is painful at times!!! I was a little hacked off that everyone told me that I would not feel a thing!!! But having said that I do believe it is really helping me, but slowly. So I really wish you well with it.
Amazon, I am thinking of you. I have spent the last year feeling completely bereft and sad, it is very hard. But I am very impressed that you are still fasting and staying roughly on your chosen path. That is impressive.
Happy I think planning for a 60th fasting holiday treat is a great idea. I could come with you. But I shall then be 75 and will probably need to stay and fast for a year to restore myself πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

    Tessy,

You’ll be nowt but a spring chicken. You’re on!

    Still here Amazon πŸ˜‰
Good grief Happy. I’ll be 80 when you turn 60! I doubt you’d want to hang around with me at a spa πŸ™‚ P

Hi “girls” I am in, I will be a mere 76! Sounds like the ideal ‘girls weekend’ getaway! Location might be a bit tricky though…. (RT of course you will be welcome too, we will need someone to take charge!)

Ouch re the acupuncture Tessy! My husband had it for hay fever years ago (worked a treat) and it was really painful where Jojo mentioned – b/w thumb and first finger, plus on his face next to his nose really hurt. I recently have been having shockwave therapy on my chronically inflamed achilles and very happy it is improving, but gosh it hurts! Feels like its being sliced open with a scalpel. As Jojo says, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!

Perhaps I’ll only be 78. But I’ve now reached an age where they will only offer 5 year drivers’ licences, not 10
    πŸ™

Well you’ll need someone to wheel you round in your bath chair P πŸ™‚

I thought your maths was a bit out, but didn’t like to mention it!

And now I really am going to bed. I’ll leave you Upsidedowners to it…

Age is fluid Happy πŸ˜‰ and I won’t be incapacitated. All my running around will continue, however I can’t guarantee the scrawny, healthy old body will be attractive; )

    Hi everyone

Just found a wifi hotspot to say ‘hello’.

    Morning/evening all.

Overcast but warm and it is going to be humid too πŸ™

FD today for me. I’ve read through my food diary for the weeks preceeding my trip to Cuba when I was losing 2lbs per week which has given me a few ideas. I wasn’t going out to eat as often then so I’ve decided that if I do so from now on the following FD will be liquid only, and some of the others might be if I’m feeling good at dinner time. I’ll do it for two weeks and then I’m going away on my own for a few days. I’m doing room only so able to avoid the hotel breakfast buffet which is a blessing as if I’ve paid for it I feel the need to eat it!
Things to do this morning so I must go,
Have a good one everybody πŸ˜›

Good plan Amazon. Remember, even if you’ve paid for it, it is far better in the bin. Pick and choose your food wisely and you CAN eat out. In Boston, we were able to find a cafe that sold just boiled eggs, so when the others ate breakfast on a fast day, we joined them with an egg and black coffee…80 cal!!! πŸ™‚ P

    Hi Purple

I’ll have tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms. All I need to start my day πŸ˜›

I’m trying to motivate myself to get out of the door and run some errands but I think I might need an espresso first!

Go for a walk at Kew A. That always helps. X
