  • Hi Everyone,
Thank you to everyone talking about the mum’s and mum in laws. I want to be like that in 40 years. Thank you for sharing. I am going to see if my 94 grandmother can touch her toes next time I see her. My dad at 71 started yoga. They are inspirations.

    Hi RT

My mum delivered Meals on Wheels for the oldies until she was 90. Hehe! Most of them were older than she was. I do admire the older generation. It’s all right dear, I’m not driving. 😉

    Bay 🙂

    Hi Sarah

If she hasn’t tried to touch her toes in a while, may I suggest you stand near her in case she goes dizzy from the change in BP. Aren’t the oldies marvellous!

    Cheers, Bay.

PS. I meant to say that most of the people receiving Meals on Wheels deliveries were YOUNGER than she was. Even though she called them the oldies. 😆

Turns out my mum and my sister have been practising 19/5 for years. They just didn’t give it a fancy label. No wonder they’re both slim, and physically hard working. They naturally came to the point of not feeling hungry for hours at a time. Everything old is new again! Bay

A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.

Prity much sums it up Bay

    😉

    Good Morning All,
    Bay and RT,
Your parents sound fantastic, I agree that those ‘seniors’ who keep mind and body active definitely get the best out of life and often contribute the most to the community. I am a great believer in Charity work, I actually think the world would be a much better place if we all donated at least two hours per week to doing something for others. I trained as a health walk leader to help lonely and physically unfit people to get out weekly and make social contact with others and enjoy the benefits of nature and improve their physical health. Trouble is that most people that join are already people that walk regularly. I am trying to find places to advertise(free) that will attract others who are leading more sedentary lives such as a Doctors a Surgeries, cafes, libraries. Mind you the British weather is not exactly encouraging people at the moment, wind and rain don’t really enhance the experience. Fingers crossed that we get a nice window of sunshine this afternoon.
Obviously I do appreciate that many young people work very long hours to make ends meet and can’t afford to give time to others. I myself did three jobs when I started out at 20 with my first mortgage. Thank goodness those days are behind me. I really do appreciate being retired as I had worked full time from 15 to 58. Many of my friends still work well into their 60’s and even 70’s but everyone to their own. I can’t even imagine returning to work now, certainly not full time. I am planning on training as a yoga teacher next year but I won’t be making a career out of it, just running a couple of classes per week.
I have always done daily meditation within yoga and find that it helps keep me calm most of the time. HB – it’s a skill worth persisting with, you can’t stop the thoughts coming into your head, you accept them and gently send them away clearing your mind, the mind learns to slow down and disturb you less. It’s difficult to describe but it has to be a very gentle process. I would say it took me many months to get to a stage where I began to get the benefit from meditation. Like fasting it’s about control, isn’t everything?
Off to bowls practise, have a great day. Be happy, be calm, be active, enjoy life.

Well my MIL is 80 and still works full time. She has worked all her life and doesn’t appear to have any intention of retiring.
With no mortgage to pay, and several pensions, the extra income ensures that she can afford to do what she wants and that includes travelling the world and spending several weeks abroad each year. No scrimping and saving and eating cat food from the tin for her 🙂
And bless her, she is always encouraging her sister, also in her 80s, to go out and get a job for some extra pocket money!

    Morning/evening all.

It is cool, wet and windy here today, but wthe forecat for next week is looking like summer 😛

My maternal granny was still digging the garden at 87 but by the time she died at 99 she was gripped by dementia, whereas my poor Mum was housebound with MS before she was 50 and her brain was as sharp as a tack until she died. All we can do is look after ourselves in the way we think best and hope for a long, physically AND mentally healthy future.

The best tool for mental stimulation is a positive attitude IMO.

    Have a great day/evening everyone.

What a wonderful MIL, Happy. 😆

Hello all. It has been a long, long time, but I have been browsing through the past few pages, and realize how much I miss the fellowship and encouragement on this thread. I hope you take me back (sad puppy dog eyes here).

I only went back a few pages so not too current with what has been happening, but JoJo you seems to have been struggling with a lot of pain issues. I’m sorry to hear that. I am also so sorry to hear that you have suffered a loss, Amazon. Thoughts of strength go out to you.

Starting early April, life became ridiculously busy for me. Things are finally slowing down and I have a bit of time to “stop and smell the roses”. I had gotten within about 3 lbs of my goal weight by mid-April, but then with work stress, shows and my boyfriend returning, everything went off the rails.

I managed to keep up with many of the good habits I had started from the end of January so in the end I only gained back 4 lbs, but it is 4 lbs ( plus the final
3 lbs) that now just don’t want to go away. I have joined a June challenge thread and hoping between that and keeping in touch with all of you, the last lbs will finally go away. My first fast day will be Tuesday, I’m hoping it all goes well.

Goodnight all. I hope all those who are struggling with pain of any type start feeling better soon. DJ

    Hi You all,

Welcome back DJ, You can do it! One day at a time. Jo Jo walking with people to cheer them up is a great idea. I find walking and talking like therapy.
Amazon- my mom use to tell me I have two choices in life… Either I can have a bad attitude or I can have a good attitude. Attitude is everything.. I love my mom’s attitude she passed it on to me. It is a choice I hope my children will also choose.
Happy Now- I am going to be like your MIL!
Bay- my mom does 19/5 by default, only when the 5 becomes just wine do I get worried.lol
    RT- great insight on moms.
    Good night

    Hi everyone

Welcome back DJ. Sometimes we all need a break to pause, stocktake and refocus.

Bay, we used to live in Brizzie at The Gap. I loved it, especially the warm weather.

RT, Rocky would have us all believe it’s the beef capital of Australia. When we were there I chickened out completely and had barramundi, and that was in the days when I could eat anything without putting on weight. Even then I couldn’t come at a huge steak – and 150g is plenty for me these days.

Lovely mother and MIL stories. My mother died while I was still in my teens but years later my father married a marvellous lady who had been a ballerina. Fantastic attitude to life and like Bay’s mum, continued to deliver Meals on Wheels to the ‘old people’, some of whom were younger than she was. Sadly (in one way) forced to stop in her late 80s when she lost her licence as her vision was deteriorating, otherwise I suspect she’d still be doing it.

Fantastic first FD of the week so far. After lunch time yoga broke my fast at 3pm with a boiled egg and half a huge navel orange. That should keep me going until dinner of small grilled lamb chop and steamed greens. Planning on fasting again tomorrow, moderate day on Wednesday to give me steam for weight training then another FD on Thursday. I am scheduled for a six-monthly assessment with my exercise physiologist on Thursday so should be easy to stay focussed till then. I am 8kg lighter than the last assessment and expecting to see a further reduction in fat % and corresponding increase in muscle mass. Will keep you posted.

Take care all and keep up the good work. n xxx

Happy fast Monday to you all the 19/5 unknowingly and perhaps unwittingly interests me those few relatives and friends that eat like sparrows and are slim and toned I used to be I claimed I can drink beer and eat chips all day and not put on weight until the dirty thirties 😳 just always entre size portions perhaps just the evening meal very interesting to me.
When I look around the town I live in seeing a slim toned male or female over fifty IMO is like finding rocking horse S**T and yet I never noticed it before weird and strange but true
    Ok keep on keeping on

amazing!! i hope i can do it too . i am so embarrassed that i had a burger as lunch today . just feel difficult to control myself …

    Good Morning everyone,
Good to hear from some ‘old’ posters (DJ)and welcome ‘new’ ones( clairelv),

I had a splurge day yesterday, lunch out( fish and chips) and chocolate bar. It was a non fast day but importantly it was the last day before my very strict three month challenge. I am really going for it to get to goal, or as near as possible by the end of August. I am cutting sugar and milk for this period and limiting fruit to one apple and one orange per day. I am continuing to do ADF and 19/5 but limiting steps to 8,000 to help with my injured knee. It is going to be a very tough challenge but it is last chance saloon before I go on my three month trip and before I hit my 60 th birthday. No more excuses, no more socialising and trips just 100 % focus on my fasting way of life. I will weigh twice per day starting today and record all calories consumed and exercise taken. Size 12 here I come!
Have a great week everyone! Keep moving.
Bowls, swimming and choir planned for today. Meals lunch 12 o/c soup( home made chicken) and prawn salad for dinner at 5 pm.

    Morning/evening all.

Welcome back DJ. Good luck with the June challenge. I’m sure you can do it.

Another sunny morning and I’m off to the gym shortly. The fasting weekend was an epic fail, but I’ll just start again with a strict day today and FDs tomorrow and Th.I’m hoping the arrivsl of summer weather helps as my new clothes are all a bit tight and I need to shed a few pounds for them to fit and look nice.
    Fingers crossed.

    Have a good day/evening all.

Just had a thought, it’s probably time for everyone to take measurements and report total inch loss( neck, chest, waist and hips) plus total weight loss( in pounds or kilos please)
I think seeing these big numbers encourages us all to see that the plan works. I wonder how big our baby elephant of communal fat is now? Afraid I haven’t been doing much to expand his girth since the last recording but at least it hasn’t gone the other way( I hope, not weighed in yet) fingers crossed.
I will report my stats tonight, dogs are whinging to go on their early morning walk and I want to get out before it rains again- it’s June, roll on summer( please)

Good morning from rainy Boston! After a string of very warm and sunny days, people, animals, and especially the plants can really use the rain!

Thanks all for the good graduation wishes. It was truly a special day.

I have been lucky to have had a wonderful mother and mother-in-law. So glad that my kids have had them as their grandmothers, too!

Stepped on the scale this morning just 1/2 a pound from the 120s, so just over 4 pounds to goal. A new low, and haven’t seen the 120s in about 8 years. That is after 3 non-fast days, but 19:5, of course! Can’t recommend that routine enough. My younger son has even been doing a 16:8 routine lately and feeling great!

Jojo, good for you, it is time to bite the bullet and go for the strictest plan you can manage to get to goal. It is short-term pain for long-term benefit (gain rhymes, but a dirty word on this thread!) I did the same staring on April 1, and have managed to lose 15 pounds in 2 months, mostly without exercise except daily steps and a run once a week. I am joining a personal training group starting next Monday which will meet twice a week for six weeks, so looking forward to a little toning.

I have a job interview tomorrow morning for a Curriculum Director position at my old district. Not completely sure whether I want the job, but always good to pursue opportunities! There is an internal candidate who has the inside track, so we will see.

HealthcoachB, I have a very active mind also and find meditation difficult, but I think that means that we need it even more!! I am going to make an effort this summer. When you consider all the benefits, it seems so worth it to practice.

Sending love to all those who struggle today, and congrats to all those who prosper. Love this thread and all of you on it.

    Hi Nicky

Small world, I’m staying in The Gap. 😉 Had a 19/5 fast day today. Watched Michael Mosley doco on SBS about eating meat.

Ply, Last week’s Michael Mosley doco was about Meditation and mindfulness and changing cognitive patterns. It was a great reminder of focusing on the positive and the impact that meditation has on the mind and body.

    Cheers, Bay 🙂

    Hi everyone,

Home this evening from a very relaxing 4 days in country Jamieson. Freezing cold and raining, but we managed to walk a lot and the wood fire was beautiful. I also managed to keep to 19/5 and fasted Fri and today(Mon), so the scales will be interesting tomorrow. Son and partner had home made cup cakes and Toblerone chocolate to share when we got home, so that was a big challenge! I did try half a cup cake then regretted it instantly, but fortunately was able to stop at that! I may have already said this, but I think the ‘black & white” certainty of 19/5 makes it easier for me, I don’t struggle with temptation as much and seem to accept that eating outside the window is non-negotiable… hope it lasts!

Read something interesting re feeling cold when fasting. Jason Fung (the endocrinologist) says its because our bodies reduce all normal metabolic activity to conserve energy when not enough calories taken in, (ie maintaining temperature, blood pressure, heart rate etc). I know eating warms us up just from digestion of food, but this also makes sense. I can’t get warm lately, think I need to get some thermal underwear!

Jojo that is a great plan to tell your family and friends that you won’t eat ‘socially’ for 3 months, its bound to help a lot. Real friends will understand and support you even if they don’t understand.

Amazon I did laugh at your expression of an ‘epic fail’. Sorry to laugh at you. But you are so successful overall, you know this is only a blip! I love your honesty. And I love that we can all be so honest on this thread as we all understand!

RT you are so right about seeing slim older people – a threatened species I think! And so many of them are seriously obese. I don’t judge them, I feel sad for them and just want to tell them about fasting!

Happy would it be really rude if I asked you what your MIL does for her full time job? I am a terrible sticky-beak! But it really fascinates me to read of someone with that much energy and enthusiasm. I cant imagine myself doing it, so I am really intrigued as to what gives her such drive!

Good luck with the interview tomorrow Ply, I hope it goes well! Congrats on your success lately too, very inspiring for the rest of us.

And Nicky, your trainer should be impressed with your progress! I know I am!
Good luck and happy fasting all, Cheers xx

    Ply,

Wow! 15lbs in 2 months, good effort! And so close to goal now, you must feel amazing and hopefully proud of what you have achieved.

Good luck with the interview. I must admit I’m a bit lazy in that respect, I ought to step outside of my comfort zone and challenge myself more.

    Jojo,

I guess your rapidly approaching trip is beginning to focus your mind! Realistically I think you won’t be able to shed your last 3 stone in that time, but if you manage 2 or even 1 stone, you will feel and look (even more!) amazing.

I don’t know whether you’ve done or considered the fast beach diet? A couple of Ladies on other threads (mid fifties, LOACA, fat busting brits) have just completed the six week stint. I think Ginette lost 14lbs and Milena 12. I know you’ve got maintenance sussed, but maybe you could kickstart weight loss using something like that? It might give you the extra discipline you need?

    Nama,

My MIL is a nurse! She currently does 3 or 4 twelve hour shifts a week, including nights. I certainly wouldn’t want to be doing that at 80!

She says she doesn’t really feel any different to how she did when she was younger. And she certainly doesn’t look like a little old lady. I guess the moral is keep busy and don’t stop and think about it?

Happy that is fantastic! Imagine being looked after by someone with that much experience! I have the utmost admiration – I just made it to 61 nursing – I loved it, but found the shift work so exhausting! What an incredible woman she must be.

Nama, I had terrible problems during the winter as I felt the cold terribly. I solved the problem by not getting cold in the first place. I put lots of layers on first thing, and had plenty of hot drinks, herbal tea, Bovril etc during the day rather than water, although hot water with a slice of lemon would be good. Exercise is good but too much made me hungry, so it was a fine balance. I guess our bodies will gradually become used to having less insulation, and at least when we reach maintenance we should be able to eat a little more on FDs if we plan well.

She is amazing really, when you think about it…which I probably don’t do often enough… 🙂

She does often drive me mad (but then so does my Dad!), and I wish I didn’t rise so often! But I think after so many years our relationship is probably part MIL/DIL but also has elements of that fractious mother/daughter relationship too!

Hiya everyone . I still read all the posts every day . I love to see how everyone is dong and I am a nosey wee too .

I had a bit of a blip last week as everything seemed to be closing in on us . Glad to say though that after a full fasting day and a mid way fasting I am happily back to only 1 pound of my lowest weight .
I seem to be in a kind of limbo at the moment and just kind of hoping for a wee miracle when Jim goes back to the hospital on Friday . he said it will be OK if I go in with him, he is shy and never asks questions but I can do it in a nice polite way .

I hope things are improving for all

Wiwi I hope it is good news for your grandson pal .

Amazon I hope you are feeling better too

SAMM I wonder where you are pal ?
Jojo I hope you pain is easing a bit

Every one of you please take care and I am so sorry I can’t remember all

I am finding it hard at the moment to put what is happening to everyone to their names . Please take care all of you lovely people .

    Wee xx

Thanks Amazon. I dress in several layers now, so I guess I need to move a bit more! It is nice not to get hot and sweaty when doing housework etc though, I am actually looking forward to warmer weather for the first time in my life! Still rather be slimmer and cold!

Happy I know oldies require lots of patience, but treasure them. They wont be here forever. We probably drive them mad too! Your MIL sounds like a typical nurse – bossy! And you would not enjoy being bossed I imagine.

    Well done, Ply
What a great achievement in such a short time. 😆 o impressive one! Wish I could do some of those animated emoticons to convert how pleased I am for you. 🙄

    Amazon
I agree about not getting cold in the first place. Layers of clothes, plus activity, plus hot drinks on fast days in Winter.

    Nama,
The best way for me to enjoy a fast day in Winter is with a bowl of my homemade vegetable soup after having scrubbed the house, and walked until my 19 hours are up. 😉 if I’m still cold after one bowl of soup, I have a second bowl of soup.

    Cheers, Bay 🙂

Hi,I’m Cynthia. This is my first day. You all seem very active so I thought I would enlist this group for help and encouragement. I already log my food. I work out nearly everyday. I’m a 52 yr old menopausal woman. I’ve gained 40 lbs in 2 yrs. im struggling now to stop it from climbing. That’s the reason for working out everyday. I’ve had many test done. So they all say fine. Just menopause. So hope this fasting helps.

    Hi Cynthia and welcome.
Working out is excellent for toning and fitness but the only way to lose weight is calorie restriction.
If you haven’t done so already might I suggest you work out your TDEE by clicking on the how it works link at the top of the page, and you also tske some measurements because sometimes the scales dom’t move but the tape measure does.
Most of us try to keep a bit below our TDEE and some of us use our goal weight TDEE.

Good luck and let us know how you get on 😛

    Trackers,
It’s evening or morning somewhere – Hi

    Jojo – thanks for the
meditation encouragement! Nothing to lose there.
Amazon – sorry for you loss!
I probably have missed a point or several posts! I am not good when it comes to
comfort anyone with the loss of loved ones. Sorry for the loss.
    MIL – took me a
while to figure what that was! Since my husband is olde than my mother… You
take a guess there (laugh) no MIL here. His side the grandparents lived to their
mid 90’s and worked to the last drop. His parents the father died early the
mother I her 8o’s. My side in the other hand …talking about my husband’s MIL –
my mother is 69, 20 pills a day and my father was perfectly healthy but
    committed suicide 7 years ago.

B – to good of a good life here of eating and
drinking! Tomorrow is FD day. The plan is basmati and chick peas. But husband
baked beautiful zofp (Swiss bread) today for us to take to church. They looked
amazing good and the crowd were pleased,

    Don’t know my weight yet!

    It’s
gonna be a fantastic week to all of us
    Xoxoxo
    B

I was always freezing on fast days when I first started, but that went away after a month or two. I have not noticed an issue since then.

    Hi Fitty, and welcome!

Weemam, always on my mind, and I hope your burdens diminish like your weight!

Fast Beach is a great suggestion, pretty much 4:3, low or no alcohol, and really strict non-fast days. Add 19:5 to the mix and you will be golden!

Hiya fitty and welcome to a brilliant group .

Ply thank you so much pal . Just a waiting game really now
    xx

my family have been told they will have me for quite a few years yet and my grannys lived a long time . My lovely Mam was 92 when she passed away and My brilliant dad is 97 . . they say they want to hold onto me as long as they can . I just hope I never turn into a miserable auld wiman 🙂 🙂

    Wee xx

That won’t happen Wee. Great to hear from you 🙂

    Hi Folks,

I am experiencing an error message everytime I use my mobile phone or the ipad when I post anything here. My messages only goes through when I use the desktop. Have any of you had this problem?

19/5 question – I am trying it for the first time today! Had no coffee (miracle) instead warm water and lemon, water and later one a back tea. I had a cup of miso soup which it’s only 35 calories and planning to eat around 2pm. Am I still qualified to be on the 19/5 or has to be no calores what so ever within this period?

Ply24 – It’s rainning here in Stamford/CT not to far from you! We lost power and the Merrit Parkway was closed because a tree fell on the road. Nothing new! Our road it’s cloased as well. They are working on it to clear all the debries.
We have somehow the same target of pounds to lose! This year I hit 140 pounds and 125 would be ideal for me. I will only go on the scale again on 5/12 and Meditation yes I should insist on that. I only and hear benefits.
    Good luck with your interview.

    xoxoxox
    B

Ah, another friend in the States, HCB! Are you a teacher by chance? I am shooting for 126, an even 9 stone for our overseas friends!

I have a little milk in my coffee in the morning on 19:5 (about 20 calories worth), but no food until the window opens at 2 pm! Some say nothing at all, some say up to 40 calories is so negligible that it does not matter. I say I will not give up my coffee with a splash of nonfat milk!

I agree ply, I don’t mind restricting my food window but I’m not prepared to sacrifice enjoying my morning tea or coffee.
You are doing really well and must be so pleased with yourself.

I’ve already dropped my goal weight by 14lbs and as I get nearer I’m thinking I might want to reduce it further, but I need to get back on track first!

I have stayed well within TDEE today so that is a good start to the week. FD tomorrow and I have a busy morning planned which should keep me away from temptation.

In my opinion … if you have to do without all of the things you love it will be much harder to do . I still work my ice cream and frozen grapes into my TDEE . if I didn’t eat them ( now and again) I KNOW I would go right off the rails .

Amazon I am thinking of changing my goal too . Quite a few of the family asked me at the 21st party if I were stopping now . They always say “diet” but I always correct with WOL. I am too old to be too thin and I quite “like” what I see now 🙂

    Wee xx

Wow, Amazon, a 14-pound lighter goal? Awesome. I am thinking there is a possibility that might happen with me. Always wanted to weigh 118 for some reason!!

Ply, I had so much to lose and wasn’t very confident when I started, so I set a (generous) goal of 154 which I changed to 140 which I’ll reassess when I get a bit closer.
I’ve just booked a short break in Belgium at the end of the month which will give me the extra motivation to lose a few pounds before I go 😛

    Good evening everyone,
Gosh how busy is this thread today? Welcome Fitty(Cynthia). I have been very active in the past but am limited at the moment. I am only swimming and walking now. I definitely agree with Amazon that provided you don’t get injuries it is great to tone those muscles.
I checked my measurements today. I/2 inch less on bust and neck only from last October, everything else the same, no surprise there as
    I weight the same.
But since Jan 13 it is 17 inches off my waist, 4 inches off bust, 7 inches off the hips and 1 inch off the neck. Still a long way to go though. 50 lbs off since November 2012 which is not that impressive but 70 lbs down from my heaviest in 2011.

Happy- As you say it is a big target but if I achieve 2 stone I will be happy plus I can push the deadline one more month before I leave if necessary. I am determined though because I want to improve my health, this is the priority at the moment. I had a perfect fast day today. I have done a Fast Beach and been successful on it. My problem has been yoyoing, I have lost the same 7 pounds five times in the last 6 months, it is so frustrating, I should be at goal now.
Ply- well done you, I don’t think I would consider going down to 9 stone, too old, I might look scraggy.
Amazon- weekends can be a bugger when you are fasting and socialising, hope it went well today.
Weemam- great to hear from you- keep maintaining honey.
Hub- well done tackling 19/5 so early in your programme.
Bay- I agree soup is the answer for both hunger and feeling cold, especially spicy one.
Nama- my wardrobe is completely different now, I always used to be a warm person, now I have lots of layers including polo neck shirts.
Looking forward to the scales tomorrow, I know they will be down and what’s more I am planning that they will be down every day, even 1/2 lb will make me happy.

A few SA fasters have been a tad quiet this week Emel comespring and AO I trust all is well and that the force is with you. Some times in this fast life things are not going to plan results have stalled life gets in the way or the slip up or binge goes on for too long and the demon that lives in the mind suggests well I’ve had too much now another one won’t hurt to me that’s danger or caution just like the road map will get you where you need to be only if you follow it

“No food tastes as good as being slim feels”
    Peace RT

No apologies necessary RT, great achievement and wise words as usual. But to new Fasters, remember to fill in your trackers.

    Great quote, RT

People spend too much time on the negative (my paraphrase) … “Not enough energy putting themselves on the line, growing out of the past, and getting on with their lives”

HCB, I make all my posts from my iPad as I’m away from home. No technical problems here. When is the last time you powered it down?

Wee, I’m thinking of you. Love your posts. 😆 you will keep ice cream manufacturers in business. My mum has a mini magnum 2-3 times a week. The one thing I have lost my taste for is ice cream. However, I still love the occasional GF tart treat.

Nicky, Nama, Brrr, what a cold snap in Eastern Australia. Must be cold where you are. Snow on the hills outside Canberra. 6C overnight in The Gap. Minus temps up near Stanthorpe.

    Cheers, Bay 🙂

Bay Your Mam sounds really nice pal . Ice cream is the best thing ever 🙂 🙂 ..

Today was supposed to be the start of summer . It has been freezing and poured (and I mean poured) rain all day 🙂 . xx

    Wee xx

    Well jojo,

Your stats are impressive. You might not have lost anything since last year, but you haven’t gained!

And if you never lost another lb, you would still be 70lbs lighter than you were a few years ago. And that is an incredible achievement.

I don’t think what you have been doing for the last few months counts as yoyoing either, I think it’s maintenance! We all have a maintenance range. Mine is probably about 3lbs, yours is 7lbs. But you’d expect your range to be greater because you weigh a little more.

Now you just need to get off that plateau and start losing 2lbs a week!

    Well said, Happy 🙄

The biggest thing for me was to accept that this is my new Way of Life, and not a diet to lose weight. This is my WOL for the sake of my health. Otherwise we will all put the weight back on the minute we say we have reached our goal. However, as maintainers, we can have a little treat every now and again. We know how to keep our selves in the healthy range. 😆

    JoJo,

Happy’s right, you are maintaining yourself with ease at this level. Congratulations on the weight already lost and gone forever.

Speaking in metric, I have the following stats. The conversions are my estimates.

BMI went from 29.3 to 22.8
    Weight. Lost 17 kgs. = 40 lbs.
Bust. Lost 8 cms. = 5 inches. The fat mostly went from my back and my trunk, thankfully.
    Waist. Lost 20 cms. = 13 inches
    Hips. Lost 11 cms. = 7 inches.

Percent of fat in the body dropped from alarming into the normal healthy range.

During the weight loss, I went from clothing size 16 to a mix of size 11-12. And got my figure back. 😉

    Cheers, Bay 🙂

    Hi all,

Yes Bay its b….y cold in Melb at present, some snow in nearby suburbs yesterday! I will take your advice and have seconds on the hot soup when needed! You are so right re acceptance of this as a new WOL, its a big one. But I think I will get there as I love wearing size 12 jeans after being in 18-20 for too long!

Faced the scales this morning after a long weekend away. Only 200g down but happy with that as I know its just a trend. 4:3 with 19/5 still worthwhile as I find it easier when I have more rules! Fasting is still much easier for me than traditional calorie reduction as I know I can still have ‘treats’ sometimes.

Jojo for your stats: I have lost exactly 18kg now, from 95.7Kg Sep 14, to 77.7Kg today. Thats a BMI from 31.2 down to 25.4. I have only measured waist, down 6inches. Clothing down 2-3 sizes. I am now (just) into healthy weight for height range, aiming to get to the middle of it at least = another 2-3 kgs, then we will see! Like you I dont want to get ‘scraggy’ (heaven forbid), loose skin is appearing already, so will get to 75kg then reassess. Hopefully the swimming will help.

I am loving having my adult son and his girl stay whilst their house is built, but hoping it will be easier to just cook for 2 when they move. (was supposed to be March!). They dont bring rubbish into the house, apart from home made pizza occasionally, but I think I will just generally be in the kitchen much less!
Enough about me! Have a lovely day/evening all x

Welcome Clairelv. Please tell us a little about yourself.

Also welcome Fitty (Cynthia). Amazon’s advice is sound. While exercise is important for keeping the muscles toned, the key to losing weight is calorie restriction so try to stay within your TDEE on non-fast days. Just start with the basics: 2 days of the week restrict your intake to less than 500 calories. It’s hard at first so don’t attempt too much too soon. If necessary, break the allowance into 3 small meals and drink lots of water and other non-calorie drinks. When hunger pangs strike remember the 4 Ds: Drink water, take Deep breaths, Distract yourself by Doing something else and try to Delay responding to the pangs because they disappear quite quickly. If you haven’t done so already I strongly recommend reading Dr Mosely’s book which is full of practical advice on managing fasting, as well as the science behind it. Please try to eliminate the word ‘failure’ from your vocabulary because there’s always another day to start again. Please share your triumphs and other moments with us. Whatever happens, at least one of us has been there before.

Welcome Maddie 201 – I think our posts crossed.

Sarah, I agree that walking and talking are good therapy.

RT, life catches up with even those of us who used to eat chips and pies in our ‘dirty thirties’ or in my case the ‘dirty fifties’. This WOL has taught me about suitable portion size, among many other things. Completely agree about so many people finding someone else to blame for their life, especially being overweight. I remember hearing the head of Casualty at the Royal Adelaide Hospital saying that so many people were digging their graves with their knives and forks. That really spoke to me. Well done again on your achievements – an example to us all.

Jojo, well done on your decision to limit socializing to non-eating events. Eating socially is something I find really hard to control, although getting better with practice and, of course, flexing the ‘good old self-control muscle’. Haven’t measured myself in a while – it’s a challenge to put the cold tape measure around on a cold morning 😉 but since I started this WOL in February 2014 I have gone from BMI of 35 (that was a serious wake-up call) to 29.4. Still a long way to go but that represents 16kg (2.5 stones) up in smoke.

Amazon, I don’t associate the words ‘epic fail’ with you. We all occasionally fall off the wagon but the beauty of this WOL is that there is always tomorrow to get back on.

Ply, only 4lbs to goal? Yet another shining example for this wonderful WOL and this thread! Good luck with the PT group and also the job interview. You are right, you never know where opportunities will take you.

Healthcoach B. Like Ply I have an active mind and remember, when told that meditating required me to not have any thoughts, thinking ‘yeah, right!’ On another occasion it was described as allowing thoughts to drift in and out but not processing them in any way. In other words, just being a passive observer. I’m still not good but getting better. It definitely helps with falling asleep at night.

Bay, you’re right, small world. Unreasonably cold in Brisbane this morning – 6C! Unfortunately not so unseasonably cold in the Adelaide Hills 🙁 – a chilly 2C when I left home at 6.30am. Also watched the repeat of Dr M’s meat program last night. When we saw it last year we decided to abandon preserved meats of all kinds. Since then we only had ham at Christmas and I had a bacon sandwich for my birthday breakfast – it tasted fantastic. I have also started making my own sausages, experimenting with different spices. My butcher uses sodium metabisulphite as required by law which, while isn’t the same as nitrites, still must be worse than no preservative. Fortunately I have had a Kenwood Chef since just after we married with the mincer attachment which does a marvellous job. You made a good point at some earlier time about how this WOL has not made you ‘scraggy’ and you have maintained a womanly layer of body fat. Your lost fat is the dangerous sort clogging up the organs. May it be the same for all of us, except RT of course. 😉

Nama, despite feeling the cold more than when I was fatter, I still love winter for the open fires. Well done on keeping the 19/5 routine. As said before, I find it very difficult to stand outside the shared food aspect of family life so for now focus on the 4 days/week I’m at work. Must be better than nothing.

Happy, from what you have said previously on this and ‘the other’ thread, I suspect you’ve been well outside your comfort zone for a lot of your working life. Enjoy the rewards you’ve earned. Your life now is pretty active, both mentally and physically. To each their own!

Good to hear from you Wee. Take care of yourself and your loved ones. Well done maintaining in trying circumstances. Miserable old woman? Not you in a million years! Like you, if I thought I could never again eat something I love I would still be fat and getting fatter. Tried that with all the other half-million diets over the past 20 years. This one keeps me sane because I can still lose weight AND have the things I love to eat occasionally.

Another good fast day half gone with a boiled egg and half large navel orange waiting for my 3pm window and my usual MW fish planned for dinner. Was distressed (but not surprised) yesterday morning to see the scales 2.6kg above my best but after a successful FD they had declined 1.5kg. Obviously the only possible reason is a water loss but still nice to see. Really appreciate the support everyone on this thread provides. Any promoter of diets would give their eye-teeth for you all.

Keep up the good work everyone. n xxx
