Day 18: Gloucestershire, UK: NFD
One day nearer to my successful fast-day.
@rahul1905: You are doing really well, success is such a great motivator!
Day 18 – SW WA USA – visiting BC Canada – NFD
Kept to about an 800 FD yesterday by sharing a salad at lunch with a brother & then reasonable portions at another brother’s in the evening – even passed on the pie.
Will try to catch a few minutes of post at least before heading out on some more family activities. Would love to come home to being a little closer to July’s goal.
Day 19/16:8 CD/Melbourne Australia
Yesterday’s FD flew by. I broke my fast at 6pm with 2 hard boiled eggs – not my usual but thoroughly enjoyed. My plan this week is to eat under TDEE and to join @strawberriesandcream and @penz. Pocket winos no wine during the week and hopefully non over the weekend. I’m away at the end of July and need to bank a few kilograms before leaving.
@anna6 I hope your little one is recovering.
Congratulations to everyone achieving losses, successfully maintaining, falling off plateaus and to everyone for still being here. Have a great day everyone.
Still day 18 –
@at – FYI, it was wonderful to surprise especially my dad. He hugged me and then just stroked my cheek for a few seconds. A very sweet moment!
Okay, off to stock up on smoked farmer sausage from “my people”. We all have our special foods with particular seasonings. This particular Canadian meat shop seasons the lean pork sausage just the way we grew up enjoying. Then off to visit a local nearby lake & maybe hike a little to a waterfall.
@rahul1905 – great downward movement in the weight!
@Liathanal – love that whoosh!
@strawberriesandcream – good for you for taking a stand against your poison! Love the way all support each other here.
@songbirdme – I love catching up on some summer reading. Don’t get too much done during the school year. A friend was reading the latest John Grisham’s book when we went to the ocean. It drew her right in.
2nd post
Ooh goodie people discussing books ๐ I am known as bookrabbit on other websites! @laurealice @songbirdme I listened to the Century Trilogy as audiobooks last year and really enjoyed it. I listened to the first one in Spanish and the last two in German. I wanted to listen to the last one in French but didn’t want to wait for it to come out so went for German again to hear the end of the story. It was interesting to hear about history through the lens of a story and to practice my languages at the same time. Audiobooks are great as I can listen while I work. I have always been a bookworm. I mainly wanted to learn languages to expand the number of books available to me.
2nd post
Onahealthyhigh my grandson who is in hospital is still severely sick and still in hospital. My granddaughter, his cousin too had the bug for ten days and only now is recovering at home. Alexander my grandson took the bug from her. Incidentally my other grandson Benjamin too vomited today and had fever but not diarrhea yet. My daughters think that they all took the same bug and at the hospital they took samples from their stools to check. We are still waiting for Alexander s diagnosis. He is a darling but having iv helps him be hydrated. That’s why he had to have hospital treatment because he wasn’t drinking enough.
Good night everyone
Day 18 California USA FD
Yesterday was a pretty good NFD and I’m down .4 kg. to 64.1, almost back into the 63’s like after my B2B FD last week. (Hey, every little bit counts!). I’m doing my second FD today because I’m traveling Thursday through Monday, 5 days. I want to avoid a FD while traveling but I’ll be watching what I eat carefully since a pair of new jeans that I want to wear Saturday just barely fit comfortably!
Am I the only one fasting today?
@lynzm – Fatrabbit has sailed past a lot of us here. Now there’s a bunch of us chasing that thin-rabbit!
Congrats to everyone who is sticking to plan. We can do this!
2nd post
@anna6 what a stressful time for you and your daughters and little ones. I wish everyone a speedy recovery.
@califdreamer you are not alone. I’m fasting today too. Logged in pretty late today sorry. Yesterday was an 800 calorie fd for me, I am aiming for 500 today, I plan to try b2b FD all week. We are on the road next week, and I want to create a deficit for some flexibility. Well off to vacation bible school at my church. @fatrabbit or should i say @skinnyrabbit ๐ I love to read too. It’s been my escape since I was a tween, many many many years ago. My only regret is that I don’t have time to read for pleasure as often as I can.Onward and downward all
Day 18 – Scotland- NFD
No breakfast, but I had a massive ham, chicken and leek pie, served with chips and broccoli. Would that be around 1000 cal? Anyway, instead of saying “another bad day, let’s start again from scratch tomorrow and eat everything I want today”, I stopped there and for dinner I had a massive portion of steamed leeks, a bit of meat and a over-ripen kiwi that “had to be eaten”. Tomorrow is a FD so I thought that skipping dinner would have made my fast too difficult.
3rd post
Songbirdme, AT, strawberriesandcream and onahealthyhigh two of my daughters are medical specialists but this is effecting their children and Alexander is their sister (my eldest) son. It is difficult for the children not to take it from each other even though we take precautions it seems that though we adults did not take it Alexander and Maxine’s sister (my granddaughters) took it. Benjamin as yet seems not to have taken it.
Thank you for your kind wishes.
@annemarilyn — I was always a summer reader only when I was teaching too. In fact, we had a lending library in our faculty room, and I would take home several for the summer. Our town’s battered women’s support system comes from an all volunteer run used book store that I love to donate to and buy from. Amazon Prime is my next option for books.
@fatrabbit – I am so impressed that you do audio books in other languages! You just continue to amaze us with all your talents and abilities!
@anna6 – whew, hope and pray for healing for all the children involved!
Day 19 Australia NFD – well yesterday’s FD was a disaster; I didn’t even stay within my TDEE! We had a staff birthday and so I bought sausage rolls (his favourites), pastries and fresh strawberries (to give me a FD option). Needless to say I had a piece of sausage roll and a piece of doughnut as well as a mini custard tart! I had cut everything into quarters or halves so not a total pig out but still way too much sugar and fat. I tried to balance it with a coconut tofu salad. the salad was green leaves, green beans and edamame beans. No seasoning, no dressing and quite revolting! I made a barley and vege risotto for dinner but also had 150gms of roast chicken meat and a mandarin. So a real mixed day. BTW – did you know the sausage roll, which was a good quality one from a local, award-winning baker, still had a calorie count of more than 2000! So one sausage roll, which is a typical morning tea for many Australians, is more than a whole day’s calories!
I told myself I would have a FD today instead but found myself considering breakfast when I stopped for a coffee on my way to work. Did avoid it though and will try to stick to my FD with miso soup and blueberries for lunch and fish and veg for dinner.
@strawberriesandcream and @steve toon taxi driver – I’m doing dry July and I can tell you I am finding it much easier to say no to alcohol than to food!
@anna – sorry to hear your little one is ill. Hope he recovers quickly. xx
day 18 NFD. Syracuse ny
Today was supposed to be FD but was a NFD but I’ve just eaten too much junk today so I feel terrible. So I’m actually looking forward to FD tomorrow. Hit reset
I see where many if not most of you have hit plateaus, often multiple plateaus and camped out there but got through them. So, I’m inspired and thankful for your posts. I haven’t plateaued; I just ate the wagon. The wagon was made of carbs and salt.
I actually think a healthy goal of mine would be to drink more water. I don’t drink enough water; and it has affected my health. I’m like a cat; I just don’t drink enough water. Anyone have tips or advice on this? How to drink more water throughout the day?
Big congratulations to @fatrabbit for reaching your goal!! Amazing!!! And your son!
2nd post
@metatauta depending where you come from in the UK ‘tea’ is another name for dinner – the evening meal. I grew up eating breakfast, dinner (lunch) and tea . I’m from Manchester.
High tea is usually eaten mid afternoon and consists of cakes and sandwiches and a pot of tea.
@lorky35 I’m happy to consume water in the form of cups of herb tea, tea, coffee and broths. It’s cold here and I find it difficult to drink cold water.
2nd post, still Day 18
@lorky35 – A good way to drink an adequate amount of water if you really think you don’t drink enough is to set out bottles of water in the morning and make sure to finish them all by night. Or you could set alarms throughout the day on your phone as a reminder.
You know they now say that the old rule of drinking 8 cups of water per day isn’t necessarily correct and that each person is different with different needs and you should drink only when you’re thirsty. But I know people that will get dehydrated and feel faint, especially on a hot day because they don’t think to drink enough. So I’m not sure what the answer is. I know that I feel less hungry on FD’s when I drink a lot of liquids.
I always thought “tea” was around 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon and consisted of a pot of tea and fancy little sandwiches without crusts and dainty little desserts. Are you telling me it could be plain old Mac and cheese with a glass of milk? ๐
Day 18 FD St. Louis USA
@anna6 sending best wishes for your family.
Day 19 Brisbane FD
FD day going well swapped dinner for breakfast today as a busy evening planned including a 5km walk.
@lorky35 I’m bad at drinking too especially in the winter, but I’ve taken to drinking 2 full glasses of water when I get up. At least that way I’ve started well. @califdreamer has some good ideas about phone reminders throughout the day.
@anna6 sending healing wishes to you family
Day 19 UK NFD ๐
good day yesterday and Cruella the scales is allowed to talk, have been jumping on each day to make sure it’s moving down a bit each day, still on redemption diet, i.e. Losing what I put on. ๐๐๐ค๐ป๐๐ป
So boiled eggs, I have mine in an egg cup, soft boiled (runny) slice the top up and dip the soldiers in (toast cut in long fingers).
“Tea” is a light dinner /supper, maybe sandwiches in the evening if u have had your bigger meal earlier.
Example
Breakfast/Lunch and Dinner or
Breakfast/Dinner and Tea.
You would never have lunch in the evening as lunchtime is the middle of the day.
Dinnertime can be either. (Whenever you have dinner)
Teatime is always evening. Confused? I’ve never thought about it before ๐๐๐๐
What I always did was during the week we had Breakfast/lunch (at work) and evening dinner.
Sunday main meal was Sunday Roast ๐ฒusually eaten in the middle of the day therefore in the evening you only want a light meal “tea”.
Also High tea ๐ฅor Cream Tea, is usually Tea (drink)โ๏ธ/maybe glass of champagne๐พ, finger sandwiches and scones and jam and clotted cream, and various other cakes. ๐ฐTreat!
English lesson over. Interesting when others point differences out, you start explanations and it sounds so weird! Ha ha have a good day all.
GOT whoever requested me not to spoil, don’t worry I would never spoil don’t worry! ๐
Day 20, Northumberland UK, NFD
Under 1000 calories yesterday, so not a fast day buit a good controlled day, which considering I started it in Starbucks I’m more than happy with. Though I think I may have fallen in love with their blackberry mojito iced tea…..
Aiming at a controlled NFD today and firmly back on the waggon for maintenance.
I think the ‘tea’ designation has a north-south divide. Tea up here can definitely be a heavy meal, with tea time being after school/work are finished. Dinner can vary between being at lunch time and tea time….
There are days when I feel like eating more like a hobbit though – breakfast, 2nd breakfast, elevenses, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, supper….. doesn’t really fit with IF though and certainly no chance of under TDEE ๐
Day 19 UK FD Very happy with yesterday not a FD but a CD and I did feel in control, pocketwinos I try to aim for weekends only but the weekend started on Tuesday last week which lead to me being well and truly off track ,aiming to get back on track but there are just so many temptations in this good weather โ๏ธ
Day 19 Belfast NFD
@liathanail – your success soundsย wonderful to me. Keep up the good work.
@Strawberriesandcream my being an inspiration is a turn up for the books.ย I’m usually in the naughty corner! I’m with you and Penz for no mid week alcohol.ย That usually goes out of the window when I’m in the caravan, although I’m working hard on that this time.
@songbirdme I loved a Man called Ove. It’s a very gentle book.ย I’m currently reading the Seven Sisters series by Lucinda Riley -an easy read for the summer. Even when I was teaching I read a chapter or two every evening to clear the fog, especially if I had worked late.ย Regular reading is a joy of retirement.
@saffy420 Smaller clothes are the truest barometer of our journey.ย
AT wise words as always. Great reflection.
@xrox -I saw that magic 10 stone 13 before I left although I’m guessing I’ll go back into the 11st by a pound or two by the time I get back but it’s a good feeling. Bert and a couple of others are doing well too.ย ย We’ll get there!
@anna6 your family has been through the mill. Wishing them a speedy recovery.
Now my being is in the ‘normal’ bmi range I have been mentally trying to work out a final goal. Came across this article which just reinforces that I’ve a bit to go.ย Ah well๐
ย http://www.nhs.uk/news/2015/11November/Pages/A-normal-body-mass-index-with-a-big-belly-deadlier-than-obesity.aspx
Have a good day everyone!
Day 19 | Sydney Australia | NFD
Well yesterday was supposed to be a fasting day but I got home late and felt like some chocolate and that was the end of that. ๐
Today I didn’t really feel like fasting. I steamed a good batch of broccoli this morning anyway and added some very fine slivers from a block of cheese on top. I had this late morning. But I ended up buying chocolate and peanuts from the supermarket and scoffing that.
I had been doing a lot of fasting days so I guess a blowout was inevitable. The good thing is that even when I eat the wrong things now I am mindful of how many calories I am eating. It is 5:20 pm now, and as long as I am sensible tonight (stay under 1,000 more calories for the day) I will still be under my TDEE and I can “reboot” tomorrow or Friday.
My car is back from the smash repairer so my daily commuting time will go from about 4 hours to 2 hours. So I’ll try to get back into going to the gym about 4 times a week, which will help.
Day 19, Newcastle UK, FD (2nd of B2B)
Grrrreat FD yesterday – first one of 500 cals achieved in many weeks …… and ….. no alcohol passed my lips. I worked in our garden all day and really never got hungry or thought about food at all. I may have been able to attempt a liquid fast for the first time ever but wasn’t brave enough and had a bowl of fruit, full fat greek yoghurt, seeds and pine nuts at 5.30pm. You had fasting company yesterday @califdreamer ๐
Congratulations on your new smaller shorts @steffieagle – another milestone on your journey.
@awilson – glad to hear your trip was a success – you’ll be able to enjoy a well deserved ‘lie-in’ to catch up on your sleep.
Do you think a plank qualifies as a weight-bearing exercise @lindasue? If so, I might at last find the motivation to do some daily planks.
@lumat – in my vast experience over a lifetime of calorie counting I suspect your massive pie was around 1000 to 1200 for the pie itself. Add another 400 or so for the chips and you’re likely more on the mark. Life can be cruel where pies are concerned.
@penz, @debster251, @onahealthyhigh – excellent – the more company the merrier – I really need this accountability and having you all in my pocket is going to make the difference. I will not let you down. Thanks too for your support @at, @annemarilyn & @metatauta. @molij – I really do not want to give up alcohol completely – I just love a couple of pints of real ale on the weekend (goes so well with the salted peanuts lol). However, wine being my poison, if I have it in the house, the bottle gets drunk. Not good, not healthy. So I’m back to no wine in house and if it’s not there, I don’t give it a second thought. I will be giving beer a miss this weekend in order to stick to my resolve of no alcohol until 29th July. @brightonbelle – I think abstaining during the week is not only good for our health and pocket, but means we appreciate a few drinks on the weekend all the more – knowing it’s been worked for. Well that’s how my brain wants to rationalise it.
@lorky35 – I find if I refill my glass straight after drinking water, it serves as a reminder to keep drinking. Also adding sugar free juice as per @lynzm‘s suggestion, helps – although I’m mindful of the aspartame, so do that rarely.
@big_bill – one of the wonderful things about retirement from my main working life was saying goodbye to the 2 hour round commute and additional travelling. How you managed 4 hours a day is staggering – 2 hours will seem like a doddle! I missed your post about the damage to your car – I hope you weren’t injured?
So into my second FD and not feeling hungry at all. Another day of gardening and visiting a garden and nursery will keep me occupied. Then down to North Shields to watch the Disney Magic sail from The Tyne. We’re both anoraks when it comes to cruise ships – lol!
Another long rambling post for those who are still with me – found this quote that I rather like: “No matter how slow you go, you’re still lapping everyone on the couch”.
Happy Wednesday folks – together we are stronger.
Day18 Cheshire UK NFD
Fell for sharing a bottle of wine last night. Apologies pocket winos, didn’t even make the weekend. In my defence it was day two of looking after the ankle biters all day, so felt I’d earned it! Realistically I think the rest of the month now will be NFDs. Yesterday came in around TDEE so not too much damage, also took the girls to the local aquarium so did loads of walking. Funny thing is we live less than 5 mins from it in the car but we’ve never been there. We came out armed with huge balloons and sharks on sticks – I think that was a grateful look from their mum when she picked them up but not too sure! It’s the last day of babysitting today then tomorrow is driving down to Southampton for a couple of days before joining the cruise ship.
The tea debate – I was brought up in Manchester and we had breakfast, dinner then tea. I tend to think tea is the normal evening meal after work but dinner is a bit more special – a meal out or with friends etc. It’s fascinating how we’ve all got different interpretations.
Onwards fellow fasters.
Day 19 – Woking, UK – FD
247lbs
As expected I had a small bounce up from yesterday but only by 1.1lb. Fast day today and very much looking forward to the mini toad in the hole from M&S which I have planned for dinner tonight. To avoid questions toad in the hole is sausages baked in a pudding batter (similar to a pancake batter). The batter makes a kind of tray that the sausages sit in, sometimes with onions and gravy. Probably shouldn’t be a fast day meal but I found this one which is 374 calories.
@lorky35 I found the tip of keeping a 750ml bottle by the bed and drinking it when I wake up really helped. Then trying to build in some habit points during the day. So I fill another bottle first thing when I get to work and have it on my desk and try to finish it with lunch, same thing in the afternoon. Then I do another bottle when I get home and have that by me whilst I’m watching telly and having dinner. I’m now drinking 3L a day and feel so much better for it and it is really helping with the weight loss.
Day 19, Belfast, FD
Day 18, 17, 16 & 15 – NFD
A week off work and a bit of over-indulgence…understatement of the month lol! Nice to be back!
I’ve put on a few pounds but it’s back to porridge now. Had a lovely time, hanging out with family, babysitting nephews and enjoying GLORIOUS NORTHERN IRISH WEATHER! Lots of words I never thought I’d say haha! Husband and I have booked a week in Ibiza at the end of August so it’ll be good to eradicate a few pounds for that trip. Nice to have a focus!
Trying to catch up on all the posts….@Strawberriesandcream I’ll be a pocket wino buddy for this week! No booze until dinner at a friend’s house on Saturday.
@anna6 sending best wishes for your family, hope they all get better soon
I’ll start a Pocketeers list for anyone fasting today. Hope I haven’t missed anyone.

Day 19 Newcastle UK FD.
what have i started with the word tea lol. Geordies general call it tea for evening meal although some still call it dinner. On Sundays dinner can be anywhere from 12 noon till 6 p.m. depending on what time you get back from the Working Man’s Club. So you could have your dinner at teatime but it wouldn’t be called tea because the meal was made for your dinner LOL confused.
Also when I was at school the dinner Bell used to go at Midday for dinner time. In our house tea was around 5 p.m. but on Sundays we used to have a high tea around 7 p.m. due to the late dinner it usually consisted of what my mother had baked all afternoon bacon and egg pie savoury mince pie as well as sweet mince pies custard tarts treacle tarts apple pie scones. No wonder I ended up with a weight problem I hope I’ve helped too muddy the waters some more.๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ
Day 19 – Scotland- FD
Today I saw the same number on the scale, so that pie wasn’t a killer. I’m a pie expert too, strawberriesandcream! I really love a good meat pie (with gravy on the side which I usually leave untouched…I think it makes the pastry soggy). This was rather small and served with not too many chips – we were in a small cafe so no pub-size portion! ๐
About the debate on “tea”. I’m not a native speaker ( as I’m sure you have noticed!) so when I learned English at school it was breakfast, lunch, dinner, with supper as a late meal before bedtime. Tea was just the drink. ๐ My in-laws from Yorkshire got me very confused when I noticed they were calling their lunch “dinner” and their dinner “tea”. The funny thing is that I’ve noticed that my 3 year old seemed also puzzled a couple of times. Once he replied to nana “no thank you, I don’t want to drink tea” ๐
Day 19….Florida…..FD
Today, I must have a solid FD, no farting around. Was doing well, then Bam! Let’s test her will power. My batteries must be dead, no will power in sight!
@califdreamer…… I read an article several years back, that said that one should drink a half of your body weight in water. Ex. if a person weighs 140 pounds, that person should drink 70 ounces of water daily.
To be honest, I’ve heard the 8 glass a day thing, I’m not sure which is actually right…..
I figure as long as I’m attempting to drink more, I’m doing good. Drink water is not one of my strong suits!
@anna6…… sorry to hear about your babies. I know how tough it is when our loved one are ill and all we can do is comfort them. Praying for a quick recovery.
Okay, well, I’m off….. only because I’m on our patio and the thunder and lightning that I’ve been watching since getting out here seems to right above me and sitting in this metal lounger does not seem like the best idea.
At any given moment, the urge to sing the lion sleeps tonight is only a whim away, a whim away, a whim away!
Day 19 – Tokyo, Japan – NFD 82.3kg
Where I grew up it was: Breakfast, lunch or dinner, supper or dinner. I don’t remember any snacking especially out on the farm. When I was a teen and in school I often eat a 4th meal right after getting home from school, on the farm I was too busy and dirty to do that. There were lots of deserts on Sundays ….
I never called any meal tea, but we did use the word grub sometime. ๐
Day 19 – France – CD
Interesting tea talk! For me, tea only happened on Sundays. Sunday lunch (and not ‘dinner’!) was soooo big, so my Mum didn’t want to cook again. Tea was always sandwiches, cucumber and beetroot salad and ham. I used to hate it, it put me off beetroot for years.
Fellow fasters, I’m about to skedaddle off to the Pyrenees, back mid-August. Thank you all so much for sharing, for your support and advice. I truly hope we’ll have an August challenge, I’ll certainly be back.
A little PS regarding OH’s gut cleanse. He hasn’t had any discomfort whatsoever since ๐ Long live cider vinegar and lacto-fermented veggies!
Big hugs to all x
Day 19, NFD
2 kilo drop on the scales! Not sure if this is the magic whoosh or just part of the usual ups and downs, but either way, I’m happy. I only checked the scales coz I *felt* lighter.
And thanks @strawberriesandcream. Last night I had a hankering for a glass of red wine but I thought of you and that was enough to stay my hand! Welcome to the pocket-weekend-only-or-not-at-all!-winos Onahealthyhigh and @hannahwatto. Sure helps to have company.
