  • Aud rey,
Sorry to hear about your back, wish you a speedy recovery, keep moving, my husband tells me this when my back goes and I really.could wallop him one at the time! But it does help in the long run.

BTW I feel such a fool, I must have been half asleep when I went on the scale on Friday because I read it so wrong – I’ve lost another pound … ah well … losing and managing a piece of cheesecake. I live this diet. I thought it didn’t make sense that I’d put on. It’s not the scales that need a kicking …

    Strength to you all
    NEmum

    Ne mum,

HeheHe I do silly things like that too but I definitely read mine right this morning I have put my 2lb back on again!

    Have a good day

    Audrey

Welcolm Janaravi, im fasting today mon and thur for me.Hope your back is ok Audrey and your feeling better today, I blame those new credit cards, what are they making them from LEAD?

Hi everyone. I think I’m sufficiently over the flu to have my planned fast day tomorrow. However I might need to see my gp for a blood test as I am really, really pale…. Just wondering if I might be anaemic….

Sorry to hear about the back problems; know all about those 🙁

Blaise, so glad to hear you are over the flu. I hope you get your colour back (with iron supplements if needed!).
Audrey I hope your back pain is easing, it must be so hard to manage. Fingers crossed you get to a point where it gives you less trouble.
PS I have to say how much I love the name Audrey, it is my mum’s name and my daughter’s middle name, so I always get an added delight when I see you have posted!

O dear NEmum you’ve got the ‘Ladies of a certain age’ brain problem! Doesn’t go well with vindictive scales! No worries, onward we go!

I am fasting today to Keelee. Just had my little breakfast and at the moment I am happy to face the long hours before my little evening meal! (it is the afternoon hours I find a trial, but O they do me good, don’t they!
I hope those new credit cards are so heavy because of all the money in them!!!! I want one if so!

    Cheers all!

    Cinque
Lol – yes definitely a senior moment.
How if fasting going for you?
I have a week left of Sober October and tonight I really want a wee night cap – a drop if my favourite whisky – but I will resist

Hope all my ladies are well

    NEmum

One more week NE! You will enjoy that wee dram so much then!
It is still early in the day here. My daughter is making cupcakes, but they are to take to her friends, and I must say I don’t have any trouble saying no to sweet things, I am so used to it now.
I am going to make a big lot of hummus for her to take to her friends too, but enough for me to have some tomorrow…. and the next day! I love home made hummus! The chickpeas are soaking.
Not hungry yet, and I have tidied up a bit…. but more to go!
I’d better write that long list of things to do, they will keep me busy in the hungry hours!
Hmm just adding, fasting generally is going SO well for me. Such a feeling of wellbeing! And I am kept busy casting off clothes that get too loose.

Hello. I am new here. I am of a certain age (63) and needed a thread that I could relate to. I did do the introduction. I have never heard of 5:2 till maybe an hour ago, I stumbled upon it. My TDEE is 1699 I can do that but do I need to be eating a ratio or something such as 40/30/20 of carbs/protein and fats? I use MyFitnessPal but if I edit my calories to 1699 it will not edit the ratio.

    Mary Ann

    Hi again odirish:

The current recommendation is 50-60% fat, 30-40% protein and 10% carbs. But 5:2 is calorie based, not type of food based, so if you conform to the calorie guidelines, you should do all right.

    Good Luck!

    Welcome Mary Ann,

Everyone seems to find their own way to make up the amount they eat on a Fast Day. You don’t need to worry too much about balance because it is only one day.
Many people find that making sure they have protein and low GI (Glycaemic Index) foods, they keep full longer.

Some people like little snacks through the days (I know of someone who munches raw carrots all through the day). Some people just have one meal.

I like to have a small breakfast (it used to be porridge, but with the hot weather coming here, I don’t fancy that so much. Egg on a small piece of toast has been my breakfast lately). Then I have soup in the evening (as early as 5pm if I am really hungry!). I find soup keeps me full for the evening.

I hope you can work out what will suit you!

Hello and Welcome Mary Ann, im fasting every Monday and Thursday and I have 500 calories on those days the rest of the time I eat what I like.

Oo better answer Keelee, I read Mary Ann’s question wrong!

Hello ladies, welcome mary ann you will soon feel at home here. I eat 1200 kcals on my non fast days not the 1500 recommended by tdee because when I lose my weight this is the correct number for me to maintain my weight so I thought I may as well get used to it. I eat pretty much what I like but log it all down on my fitness pal so I don’t go over or guestimate. ….

My back is not much better I am sorry to say, so I am holed up on the sofa for the day, Ian is pouring me a large jug of water as I write this…. I hate taking pain killers but needs must…

Fast day for me today I shall refrain from eating till ian gets up then he can re heat me some stew….yummy I will be ready for that. .

Cinque there are not many of us audrey’s about….

NeMum it’s just said on the news going a month without alcohol is really beneficial to your health, you can do this, new are all behind you….

Happy fasting fellow fasters, let’s stick together because together we are stronger!

    Audrey

My mum was delighted when she met another Audrey, and one who made a point of celebrating on St Audrey’s day. i think she always was aware of St Audrey’s Day after that.
Sending good wishes for good back things. So glad Ian is looking after you.

Hello everyone! How is it going?

    Hi ladies

I didn’t manage to stick to the fast again yesterday, I just want sugar and fat….. think i am craving comfort food to ease the back.

I have decided to give fasting a break for a while until I feel better, I am back to the Dr later this week so let’s hope he can help until I can get into hospital for pain relief.
    Keep in touch everyone

    Good luck to all

    Audrey

It is so hard with pain, Audrey. Deciding to just concentrate on getting through the hard days, is surely the best decision. Sending best wishes. I am keen to hear how you are going over the days.

    Audrey,
So sorry your are in such pain, I hope the dr sorts something out for you. I know how debilitating pain can be, you are right to give fasting a break, you don’t want to stress your body out with another thing too. keep in touch, my thoughts are with you.

Also my husband’s mother and sister was an Audrey and a wonderful tutor at university that got me through my teaching training at very difficult end was called Audrey. So the name has a fond place in my heart.

    Power to you
    NEmum

Audrey, be kind to yourself – I hope you feel better soon.

My fasting week has started a bit bumpy, did ok til the afternoon, went to M&S to wait for son, OH bought me a latte instead of the requested tea, and forgot to ask even for skinny, chicken and salad open sandwich for tea, so not to bad until I was passed a cakey tarty thing with icing and some crappy white stuff inside, how do people eat this stuff, it was half eaten before I realised what I was doing, concentrating on my work! Obviously working too hard! Not the end of the world but about double my quarter tdee and well over 500, only cuppa so far today, reduced to a quarter of a teaspoonful and I only drink a quarter or a half – just pouring myself a fizzy water with ice and about to put the stock pot on.

Idea is liquid today and FD tomorrow and Thursday, doing plenty of soup to get me through. Wedding Saturday, still looking for my frock – doing papier mache hand this afternoon, and ordering a moustache. My veneer has dropped off my front tooth – such a great witch look!!! Pity I’m not going as a witch. If I ever find the dress hopefully this week’s fasts will get me into it.

Then a sober November – eeeeeeeckkkk!!!

    btw

well done to the losers on this thread!!!!! I’m going nowhere near the scales until Saturday.

    Milena

Good luck with the fasts hope you do o.k.

NeMum I am glad you are o.k. was beginning to think that something was wrong.

Cinque thanks for the good wishes, it is much appreciated

I am still in my nest on the sofa, took some strong painkillers last night to try to help me sleep, think I am still drugged on them. I have eaten lunch I made cheese on toast haven’t had it for 12 months very tasty.

Ian has got me some home made pea n ham soup out if the freezer for tonight’s meal so shouldn’t be too bad calorie wise.

I am back at Dr’s later in week so let’s hope he can suggest something to ease the back pain.

Off to sleep now feeling very tired.

    Good luck everyone

    Audrey

Hello everyone, haven’t posted for ages as been lazy and have just been reading your emails. Have loved reading those and all your stories though.
Have been on holiday to Portugal. Their custard tarts are to die for. My daughter has got engaged and we are looking at venues and a lot of money I might add.
Have been doing my usual. Fast days good, non-fast days some good, some bad, some horrid!
Saw a woman today who was amazed by my weight loss. She hasn’t seen me for ages. Some people are really supportive until you weigh less than them and then they say don’t lose any more. I still have quite a way to go. Aren’t people funny?
Happy fasting everyone and lovely to be in touch again.
How are you Ginette and Milena?

    Hi Topsy

very well, how are you – been missing you, was wanting to hear how the p…. husks – can’t spell – were going, thinking I may need a bit of fibre.

How is the weight, if you have managed to maintain over the last month or so it was be great, I tried one of those tarts at the weekend. Where are you now on your journey – so glad people are noticing!!! Lifts the spirits. No one has suggested I stop yet, not may folk have even noticed to be honest.

Congrats on the engagement, leave a brochure about Gretna around – they might elope? Otherwise a very busy time. My friends who are getting married on Halloween are as poor as church mice – and I think 200 are going to the wedding. Lovely wedding venue, hope its something simple for the reception. Should be some sight though, everyone in fancy dress, of course. Even the bride – though I think it will be a traditional dress turned into a fairy dress.

    Welldone TopsyT.

I find my fitness pal a huge aid! Without it I forget how many cups of coffee I’ve had and quantities would creep up depending on my mood!
Yesterday I didn’t enter a square of dark chocolate that I saved over from my FD (a daily treat that works!) and a small pot of 0% fat yoghurt so when I reached the end of the day I realised I’d ‘gone over’!!
Oh well! I’ll take those extra cals off my total today so that it’s all square!
I’m experimenting with a bowl of whole oat porridge and 0% yoghurt and seeing how it controls my appetite (it’s meant to!) really full just now!
Incidentally I’m 69 and have lost 3 1/2 stone in approx 8 months on this scheme – absolutely fantastic! Still a few months to go but soooooo worth it!!

pen nib you are fantastic, well done.Do you watch how many calories you have on non fast days.I haven’t been. I haven’t lost much weight in ages.I wonder if my bodies gotton used to the two day fast as ive been doing it for ages now over a year anyway.Do you have any tips. When I watched the tv program on the 5\2 diet I thought you could eat normally on non fast days and just have 500 cal on your fast days.I only have one small meal at night of 500cals, but im wondering if my bodies got use to that now.I didn’t want to add another fast day because I think when I do go back to normal eating I will just gain weight again. But you have done so well you must be proud of your self.

    Thanks Keelee !!
Yes I found that I lost weight easily initially eating as much as I wanted but then I ‘plateau’d’ so went back to the drawing board

Using the fitness pal app I stick to 1200 cals on NFDs getting as much variety of tastes as I can to avoid boredom(!) and stick as far as I can to Monday and Thursday FDs

I’ve found I can cope fine with this – the secret for me is keeping occupied and counting the cals ALL the time! Gives me a great feeling of achievement when the scales show a pound drop. Hope that helps?

It’s possible that Michael habitually didn’t eat heavily so ‘normal’ for him was easier? I’ve used some of the other forums to find out what others have done

    Hi pen nib

I agree 100% with what you have said, congratulations on your tremendous weight loss. Welcome to our little corner of the forum. Keep posting we need success stories….

Keelee try to start counting on non fast days too it really does help…..

Just realised my earlier post has disappeared. ….Welcome back topsy

    Audrey

There’s a chart in the 5.2 book series that shows how many cals you need to maintain your weight – so I plan to use that when I’ve reached my target – I’m pretty sure I’ll get used to quantities etc and develop a predictable pattern of eating
I’ve already managed eating out etc fairly successfully by ‘fasting’ the rest of the day and choosing lower cal items on the menu
There are lots of charts and tips etc available on the 5:2 book list and apps too!

    Thanks Keelee.
I am good thanks Milena. Apart from had a might row with husband this morning. Over something very stupid of course. I am not going to comfort eat though.
Home for lunch – work is manic at the moment. Which I could retire at 60 in a few months but have to keep going until 66. Oh well keeps me out of the biscuit tin.
I am holding my weight loss I think. Still haven’t weighed but trousers seem to still fit o.k. Still trying to get rid of my tummy but that may not happen.
Thanks for the congrats. Wish they would elope ha, ha. Am sure they will find the perfect place to suit our budget and that it will be a lovely day shared with ones we love. (And the odd one we don’t)
Pen – I think the key is to eat sensibly and normally on fast days. That is the hard bit.
    Good luck everyone.

Hi everyone. Lots of good news on this thread which is great! My FD on Monday went well and I have another one planned tomorrow. I’ve batch-cooked some dhal and a vegetable curry and will have the latter for dinner (131 calories). The recipe book I have has one more meal for me to try; a risotto-type of thing so I’ll give that a go next week.

I’m very interested in all the publicity around sugar which is going on at present. To my horror, the low-fat yoghourts I really like have three teaspoons of sugar each! The trouble is I can’t use artificial sweetener so am a bit limited. Going to try changing to plain yoghourts with some low sugar jam or apple puree. All other ideas welcomed!

hi Blaise, I don’t eat sugar and haven’t for about a year.you are right if you check the grocerie isles youll see that all low fat products contain more sugar than normal food.I use stevia or rice malt syrup for sweetner as I don’t eat artificial sugars. Some of my family eat coconut sugar. I

    Hi Topsy,
I’m betting that when you meant Non Fast days, where the key is to eating sensibly and normally. One thing I love about 5:2 is that my normal days are getting more sensible.

Blaise, yum re curries and Dahl, and risotto too.
Disgusted that they put heaps of sugar in yoghurt. The lovely yoghurt made from full cream milk ( full cream milk is only about 4 percent fat) is my choice.

Hi everyone, best wishes for a good day!

for a long time now I’ve come to appreciate the taste and natural sweetness in fresh fruit so I do without sugar altogether!! honestly I’m not bragging! my special 5:2 treat this summer has been blueberries, raspberries and strawberries plus melon bursting with flavour with not a grain of sugar in sight and low in calories!!. There’s such a thing as 0%fat natural Greek style yoghurt which has the texture of double cream but v healthy and 100g is v filling!! and therefore you can have more of it within the daily allowance!!
I think a lot of the sugar in processed food is added for taste – let’s stimulate our taste buds and enjoy the real tastes!

    Morning ladies,

I have decided to have a week free from fasting, I can’t fast at the min with the back, I know it sounds like an excuse and probably is but I just need to concentrate on the back pain for now.

I am going to try fasting again on Monday and Tuesday to see how I get on.

    Hope you are doing ok

Keep in touch together we are stronger

    Audrey

    Hi all,

It’s lovely to see this forum so busy, and such a lot of positive energy too. Well done to all you ‘losers’. I need to get back to some sensible fasting, I have only managed 1 fast a week lately, and while this is enough to lose a pound here and there I would like to see more come off and quicker, and I am the only one to do that. NEdad is no help at all, he is great and supportive on my fast days, but on NFD he’ll just make a hot choc and hot buttered toast of a evening and present it to me, and I haven’t the heart to say ‘no’ since he thinks he’s treating me. I need to train him better.

    Pen nib
Well done on the sugar thing, it really is possible to train our bodies away from the white evil that is sugar. You have done so well to lose so much in 8 months, have you much more to lose?

    Blaise
The dahl and veg curry sounds great and so low in calories, I agree the diet industry is all conning us with ‘low fat’ food as it tends to have more sugar in it and the ‘low sugar’ often has high fat. I have natural yoghurt too, always a large tub in the fridge, I go for somewhere in between 0% and full fat, even my boys love it too. I am now getting really excited about my trip to Lymington, I’ve not been away from my husband and boys since my year at school had a reunion some 10 years ago. 6 hour bus journey to London, then train to Brockenhurst, it would be great to meet up, I have no idea of our plans when we’re down there, I know some of the group want to go over to the Isle of Wight. My email is on my profile page and we can try to.

In the absence of Ginette, I shall post something that NEdad found, it shows that we are all on the right track, but I don’t think it sells all the health benefits tho.

    NEmum

Ladies… Congratulations to you for successes you have loosing weight and inches. And resisting temptations that trip you up.

Audrey I do hope the Dr will offer significant help for the back pain.

I appreciate the link you offered NEmum. Information is akin to what Michael Mosley states in the book “5:2.” I never intended to count calories after reaching my goal. I intend to continue 5:2 sometimes 6:1 so that I will always have some fasting going on. I believe it is (for me) an eating plan for my life and my health. I do feel better on fast days etc. I recognize different people know different things they need to do for their health in this forum. Pea Jay

Yes. Good article, NEmum. Thanks for the link! And what a wonderful hubby to bring you hot cocoa and buttered toast. He means well. Haven’t eaten that since I was a child. Am fasting today but am thinking of that wonderful sogginess when you dip your toast into the cocoa. Mmm. I can wait to have it until I reach my weight goal (and that might be quite a while). I’m getting pretty good at not eating until dinner time on the fast days. I was doing pretty good at loosing until husband, son and i went to visit family for a few days (and then was my birthday as well). But i’m back on track today. I’m excited to see if i can get those couple pounds i gained off again. But buttered toast and cocoa. So nice to think about. It can wait!

Hi Audrey, glad you could pop on. Fingers crossed that in a week or so you pain will be eased and you will be able to do lots of your normal things, including fasting!?

Hi everyone else too, best wishes for a good day!

PS good article! Simple and clear.

Well, weigh-day for me this morning and I haven’t lost a pound! However my waist measurement has gone down by half an inch, so I am in persevering mood!

    Hi ladies,

    Blaise
Well done on the persevering mood, go with the half inch off the waist, that’s progress in itself, well done, the weight will catch up soon. I’m still trying to get my head around diet at the mo, I’m out to a friends house tonight for a girly meal and a chat, so I’m trying to be good today before I go, and then I’ll have a fast day tomorrow to balance it all out. At least I won’t be drinking tonight, so that’s calories I don’t have to worry about.

    Audrey,
Hope the pain isn’t too bad for you today, love and strength to you.

    NEmum

Blaise I think it would be worse to lose half a pound and nothing off your waist measurement! So congratulations!

So quiet on the forum this weekend.
Have you all been off having a nice weekend. Hope so.
I’ve had a pretty disasterous 7 days with half term and treats and meals out, so fast for me today. If I’m working (I usually get a call around 7:30) I’ll pack some soup and Iif I’m not working I’ve got the hall stairs and landing to paint, so that should keep me out of the fridge.
    Who else is fasting today?

    NE mum

Hi NEmum, it is Monday afternoon here and I am having a fast day. I just had some miso soup, and I’m planning on a big bowl of veggie soup this evening. Even with my cuppas with milk, I think that will keep me below 500 cals, so after 3 months I am finally getting 5:2 right!
It must be hard when life is chaotic, I hope this week won’t be so disastrous. Good luck looking after your health, AND getting your painting done!
Hi all the others doing the mysterious and wonderful things that women of a certain age get up to! ?

    Morning ladies,

I am on a muscle relaxant tablets from the Dr and am feeling a lot better, there is nothing more we can do now until the machine is mended at the hospital. ….

B2B fast for me today and tomorrow, I have gained weight thanks to my caring husband feeding me up all weekend!

    Have a good week everyone

    Together we are stronger

    Audrey

    Hi all,

I have heard from ginette she is o.k getting things sorted out, and hopes to be posting again soon.

Hurry back ginette, it’s not the same without you!

How is everyone doing? Tis very quiet!

    Audrey

    Hi everyone,
Audrey, what a relief that you are feeling up to posting, but I hope that machine at the hospital is soon mended! I hope you really enjoy your back to back fasting.
I had an excellent fast yesterday. For some reason I wasn’t hungry so I didn’t eat. I put about a quarter of a tomato, chopped fine, and a bit of chopped spring onion in miso soup, and had that at about 2pm and then just water the rest of the day.
I am a bit washed out this morning so maybe it is an aberration!
Best wishes to Ginette, it will be good to have her back posting, when she is ready.

I’m still here! Tomorrow will be my first fast day this week, with Friday being my second one. Work is just SO busy at present that I’m pleased not eating will save me some time!

    Cinque

Yes I am much better thanks. The back is certainly easier now I have sorted out the muscle spasm.

I was hoping for a liquid only day but have had 3 morning coffee biscuits so a good fast day instead.

Lets hope its another good day to follow.

Blaise good luck for your fast it does seem easier to get through the day when we are busy. ..

I am feeling better now I have fasted today I have eaten lots of rubbish these past few days it’s nice to have control again.

Keep on going ladies and remember to keep in touch together we are stronger

    Audrey

    Hi Audrey

    not a bad start eh?

had a creamy chicken and tomato pasta – that took a bit of planning but my boys wanted that for tea!! managed 435 calories – not the largest portion of food and the only meal of the day, but there you go! and a few calories for my teas.

Might be having a liquid day tomorrow, though it may become a liquid with lumps! Soup tomorrow. I’m going to try some different soups next week, any ideas anyone?

Now trying to work out where OH hid the chocs leftover from Halloween. We decided to eat some on Sunday but as the box was unopened with a Feb sell by date, I asked him to hide them until Christmas.

But now I know we have chocolate in the house ………………..
