  • I have been eating this way, on and off, for about a year. I keep stalling because the day after the fast day I feel guilty eating so I don’t eat as much as I should. This then leads me to overeat the next day and then I end up saying next week I will start again properly. So as a consequence I am still at my starting weight. Are there any suggestions?

Hi smarte. I wonder why you feel guilty? I can relate to you perhaps. I too find myself using words like ‘guilty’, ‘should’ and ‘shouldn’t’. I wonder if, like me, you were told you were a ‘good girl’ when you ate finished everything on your plate. Or adopted other moral/jugmental words around food and eating?
I’m not ‘good’ when I fast, nor ‘bad’ when I eat. I know I want to lose some weight and be a healthier person as I head into my 60s. But this is a path I’m walking, nothing to do with being good or bad, just with making free choices. I’m really trying as I embark on this diet thing (only week 4!) to listen to my hunger and fullness more kindly and gently. One thing I’m just beginning to do – on non-fast days – is to change the question from ‘do I want any more?’ to ‘have I had enough. I think it’s helping – maybe ask me again in a few weeks. Good luck to you.
