Cholesterol reduction?

  • In the Fast Diet book Michael Mosely described how fasting reduced his cholesterol level, last night on BBC 2 ‘Trust me I’m a Doctor’ he decided to start taking statins. Does this mean that fasting can’t sustain a lower cholesterol level?

Hi jimmy, a good question and one I am interested in. I missed the programme so do not know what led up to Michaels decision to take statins. I am only a lay person so know as much as you probably do. Statins, to most of us are linked to heart attacks, either to prevent or to help following an attack. Cholesterol along with other indices such as old age are linked to increased chances of a heart attack.
Your question I believe cannot at this time be answered effectively. 5:2 fasting is in its infancy so lacks substantive research. I suggest you google Valter Longo and Krista Varady, both interviewed by Michael and both having researched different types of fasting. Browse other posters comments such as WiltUSA who posts interesting sites to research. However I do not think you will find an answer to your question. I believe only Michael can give an explanation as to why he has made this decision after giving us the results of his fasting research which has given us the 5:2 lifestyle. I would welcome other posters comments on this one.
Having had a health check some months ago I was told I have a 24.9% chance of a heart attack in the next 10 yrs, I also had increased levels of bad cholesterol
so I have a vested interest in your question.
    Good Luck.

Unless a middle-aged man has established heart disease statins will be of no benefit to him and over time are likely to be harmful. They are never any use to women. Furthermore, elevated cholesterol is NOT a cause of heart disease. It is very concerning that the medical establishment backed by substantial funding from Big Pharma (who make a motza from having practically everyone over the age of 40 on statins) have done such a great job of ignoring or quashing research to the contrary. There is a lot of information out there about just how bad statins are and how vital cholesterol is in the human body. Here is a sample-

Thanks for that, seems a rather controversial subject but I tend to be on the same track as lizard4mi. I was told by my GP that my total cholesterol was 5.2 (whatever the units are), although a high proportion was the ‘good’ version HDL, and as I also have high blood pressure she suggested a statin – which I refused. I have tried the fast diet but as I am quite slim anyway (10st 4lbs)I was rather alarmed when my weight started dropping even further. Now I just fast once a week. I’ll probably be given another cholesterol check sonn and I’ll keep you posted.
I find the Big Pharma situation rather alarming, I recall readin something on these lines about 10 years ago.

I’d also be interested in hearing back from Michael regarding this issue. one of the key drivers for me undertaking fasting (since May) was to reduce my cholesterol level’s. in Jan they were 7.3 > now 6.4 (good HDL has increased & bad HDL reduced) … GP happy although they implied that this could be put down more to (1) diet changes & (2) regular exercise.

thanks for the links wiltldnrUSA. interesting.

a couple of relevant points emerged for me to add to the cholesterol challenge/conversation:

––WEIGHT/BMI: [Michael > in reply to: BMI getting close to “Underweight”] i’ve lost 8kgs over the past 5-6 months of doing the Fast Diet. while still a healthy bmi (20.5) i’ll consider moving to the 6:1 approach if weight keeps dropping in next few months. weight loss isn’t my main objective.
–– HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: [Clare > in reply to caroline.j.rees: Hypertension (HTN) or high blood pressure and FastDiet] As Clare states, “Bp as you know is affected by a whole variety of factors and tends to gradually increase with age” … i’d add the impact your genes inevitably have on progress! i’ve added a new forum ‘Fast Diet and high blood pressure’ that talks specifically about this topic.

    glad u liked it

did u click his topics 2?

we all miss him but he loves his job 😀

he does pop in responds once and a while

i watch his twitter sometimes i don’t have a twitter account

however there some good stuff there 2

    u can c

    https://twitter.com/DrMichaelMosley

there r some vids that might help 2

    everything a newbie/poster might want 2 c, use & read

again continued success in this fdl

    happy nonfastdays & fastdays & 5/2 & 4/3 & adf or 4/2/1 or 3/3/1 or adf w/1 & the fdl (fastday lifestyle) 😀

thanks. i scanned for topics/areas more relevant to my concerns + i’m active on Twitter. ideally, if Michael, Mimi & Clare can’t communicate regularly within the forum context, then they’ll need to organise for someone else (or team) to respond on their behalf & pass on information that extends beyond the anecdotal (while acknowledging the more personal is also useful in many ways as well). the site/diet will live & die on their leadership in ‘leading’ the communication.

i’m just glad that there is a forum

    he does not have 2

    success in lowering ur diseases

i’m trying 2 do the same

i’m sure u have seen my trial & tribulation

    but it is working

I don’t know if its helpful Jimmy but after 3 months on 5:2 I had a blood test and my cholesterol was down by a third. I’ve now been on the diet 8 months and I’m about to have a second blood test and wonder if like Michael I,ll have to go back on statins ….. I’ve lost 33.7lbs in 34 weeks but will the cholesterol still be down? I wonder what others experience are? Does cholesterol stay down on 5:2?

Good luck Beavergong, be very interesting to see how you get on.
Incidentally the diet dosen’t seem to have reduced my blood pressure either

Try watching last episode of Catalyst on iview. http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/
They investigate the use of Statins to curb cholestrol and big Parma’s push.
The content has stirred up discussions on talk back radio with very good arguments on the pro and cons of Statin drugs.Dr Maryanne Demasi, producer, investigates the science behind the long established claims that saturated fat causes heart disease. It’s a two part series and the second part airs this Thursday.

interesting points being raised by Beavergong and jimmy on the effectiveness of the 5:2 on cholesterol & blood pressure (as i said in an earlier post, weight loss isn’t my main objective) … it would be good to hear more results from people who have been using the approach over long periods of time. quantifying results + what physical activity they’re also doing (my GP suggested that my results could just as easily be put down to diet changes & regular exercise i’m now doing).

I am really disappointed as my total cholesterol has increased from 5.9 to 7.5 after three months doing 5:2 diet. I did not fast the day before the test but did not eat on the morning of the test. I had hoped it would reduce but it has got worse. Looks like it may have to be more tablets from the doctor for me.

    i’m finally @ peace

    usa

    Hi all-
Mark-I just watched part 1 and 2 about the big statin ripoff, so glad I’m not being told I need those.
Ooops, got to get ready for Hallowe’en kids coming by

Good reading all the comments. Been on the 5:2 for 13 months.
My cholesterol is around about 6. My last test it came down a bit further
from 6.2 to 6.1. The LDLs went down somewhat and the docs seem ok. I am not on any medication, I am 65.

I’m happy with this. I don’t have a history of heart disease in the family.
My weight is good and I exercise regularly. It would seem that being female
allows a higher reading, not very scientific though.

I didn’t read all those links above but statins are big business. I can understand that we want the best for those we love and statins may seem like an insurance policy. I think there is too many unknowns though and some issues raised are diabetes, dementia. The thing that scares me is that statins mess with your brain.
