Sorry uptight, I meant you 🙂
Yes, his other books are funnier, but I have a (very Americanised) brother who’s reactions are kind-of-textbook-Bill Bryson so it was entertaining(eg: Are there any poisonous snakes in your backyard? we live in an apartment block in suburban Sydney lol). We may have led him down the garden path a bit and made a few tales on red back nests in sneakers.Hmmm
I like your list of fave authors Uptightoutasight. Sounds like you enjoyed Burital Rites? Hannah Kent is my cousin! So I’m very biased, but loved it also. I love books with mood & tone – which is probably why I’m drawn to Kate Morton’s style. I’ve also enjoyed Alison Weir over the years. Her specialty is the Tudors. She’s an historian first, which gives her fiction more credibility. Geraldine Brooks is another solid Aussie author. I especially liked Year of Wonders.
I didn’t realise Wolf Hall & Bring up the Bodies have been made into a TV series! That’s exciting. Has anyone watched the Outlander series?
Sorry, there I go wafting on about books again.
Tomorrow is my next fast day, today being a public holiday in SA. Plus I’ve a busy day tomorrow so it makes sense… less time to spend thinking about food. I’ll try for Mon & Thurs after this week. And weigh on Fri.
I’m a bit worried I’ll find it harder going when home alone. There’s no-one to be accountable to! So I need to eat smart, and plan my calories.
Morning all boy some people really are avid readers, but certainly seems like most of us enjoy a good read. We do seem to have a lot in common, don’t we. Love food, love books, most love animals/pets/birds, many of us are rural but not all, love wine!, enjoy a good laugh/poem, and all of us are encouraging and supportive. A pretty good bunch I say!
Today is FD & hoping that I’ll see the 75’s again by tomorrow as I bounced back up to 76 again today. But it was only 76.0 which usually indicates that it’s probably the last you’ll see of that number. Boiled egg for brekky & lunch & then a Sausage Casserole from here http://www.52recipes.co.uk/2013/02/20/sausage-casserole/ as I have sausages to use up. Only 250 cals too. Now I plan to keep busy and do some housework (ugly word) & maybe cook up another lot of tomatoes into sauce – if I have enough.
Keep on keeping on guys…whatever your circumstances ie weight up/down/same. That’s something we can all surely do to the best of our aussie ability! Avagooday. sj
Ah!! You ladies are a hoot! Had such fun reading through the pages since I last got to come on the thread 🙂
My 5:2 journey started out wonderful, first week I lost 4kg, and I didn’t have any problems with fast days at all plus I felt great!
Second week, the dreaded Aunt Flo hit, having PCOS I only get my period 3-4 times a year, but when it comes its a shocker! The craving for chocolate were overwhelming so I bought some little freddo frogs and had two after dinner (120calories), it satisfied the chocolate cravings but didn’t make too much of a dent in my Calorie allowance!
Then I came down with a nasty flu/chest infection and couldn’t face the fast day menu, and just wanted throat lozenges and hot tea, so I didn’t do any fast days last week, but I did keep to my TDEE every day, so I didn’t gain any weight!
So 4kg in 2 weeks, I’m happy with that!
Doing Fast Day today, and feeling very tired, but not hungry 🙂
Can I ask what others eat on their fast days?
I’ve been having 1 egg in the morning, then a small stirfry with chicken for dinner.
Love reading this thread, sorry I can’t post more!!
MissYellow xx
Teskat- You are never alone, not on this thread anyway 🙂 But for your meals, call a friend (someone who is close to you) and make a buddy? Call her/him and them or pass on a copy of your food plan to them?
Woohoo SJ – go 75ssss
Miss Yellow: It will pass, I find having a green apple around 3PM helps with tiredness. But do eat well on non-FDs 🙂
Hi gang! FD today, only green tea and lemon for brekkie. Half an hour on the exercise bike (amazing! I’m so much fitter!) Managed to get to after midday before having a broth of my own invention. It involves keeping the water/juice from yesterday’s steamed spinach (250mls) in fridge overnight (or longer, could freeze and use other veg juices too). Then boil it (microwave) with chinese dehydrated shallots (I g) and shitake mushrooms (1/2cup) I added about 1g of crumbled feta, and herbal salt, let it steep for the mushies to soften, about 5 minutes. All only came to 80cals on MFP calculator. Tastes really yummy. will see if it satisfies till dinner, (cauliflour rice and pasta sauce). I have boiled eggs on standby, but am aiming for under 500cals . My hilarious week had repercussions, am back to 87kg instead down! it’s been fluctuating between 85 and just over 86 for a week or so. So I’ve hit a plateau I reckon. I can handle nil progress, but it’s NOT going back up! No wine this week. It’s prohibition!
CG, I agree with whoever said it(previous page), stress could be playing a part in keeping you hovering, also quality of sleep. Plus you can’t burn off cals by exercise with your back problem. Maybe try passive avenues? Acupressure and massage can get the chee flowing (not to mention the lymphatics), and there is also the old fashioned, steam bath therapy. It is largely ignored these days, but combined with massage if moves fat deposits. The old ways still work!
I really believe the body has it’s own agenda to maintain the weight it’s “used to”, it’s like it’s subconsciously programmed to sabotage our conscious will. Plus it adapts and just stops complying once it sets the bar (plateau)then it’s our own ‘won’t’ power versus our ‘will’. We have to jolt it, change the pattern. Maybe not with extra fasting, but different activities. Passive exercise keeps coma patients limber, cg, try it. (and see a rehab physio BEFORE your op.) If you are a pensioner you should qualify for the subsidised program. It covers 5 allied health treatments, including physio exercise assessment, or dieticians psychologist etc. (at least in QLD it does) Maybe there are specific exercises you can do in your water aerobics? j
Malena, I am also a fan of the ‘outlander’, hanging for the next series! To those new, welcome! Chippie, hope you found some answers here.
Go Gal. Hah! I got it! The musical ‘Cats’ is Playing when you and CG, FB, get to, is it Sydney?(or Melb?), and you are hoping to get tickets!
Sorry Gypsy ….. the other day you were in tepid waters…. now the waters are cold
Doggy you are in cold waters as well.
Blow my fast today as I need a real coffee flat white on soy …so had a big one . then carrot sticks with hummus dip.
Salad for me tonight.
STAY TUNED FOR TOMORROW’S CLUE! Hint…..it involves a tiny bit of research on your part team………..LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT heheheh……GO GAL
Gogal I got it. Michael is introducing the 5:2 in a big way to Australia; he’s seen how well we’re doing on Aussie Determination so he wants us to sing a promo song that he’s had written by a famous artist. We each record some, then a very dubious recording company in Mexico has agreed to mix all the tracks together and make a hit out of it! I’d say that would definitely be caterwauling hehe. sj
Had a good FD though a bit hungrier than usual. I think what’s happening is that I’m drinking less, simply because I get through the days so much easier now & don’t think about drinking cup after cup. So I topped up mid-afternoon with one of my Vegemite hot drinks & now I’m fine till dinner. Anyone else tried this…just a teaspoon in a mug of hot water, really fills me up & tasty too. My batch of tomato soup is about ready to be blended so gotta go, then into the freezer.
suejen
I love all the blinken’ replies I got on my apple question!
Hi, chipping! Welcome. I’m in my 20s too. I try to not do too many food-related things on Mondays and Thurdays, or I just change my day. Or I do a 2pm to 2pm one on occasion. I didn’t tell anyone until they started asking me about my weight when it became obvious I was losing. 22 months and 24.2kg later they don’t really ask questions anymore because they see it works. I find it hard remembering my early days of zitting, waiting for the hrs to pass but keeping your mind busy works. Go for a walk, doing laundry, reading… Filling up on water helps too. And trying to eat as late as possible seems to kickstart hunger a lot less quickly for most.
I checked out Dr Lu Ton, CG, You’re in good hands. He was one of the up and coming young guns not so long back, 2 fellowships now, so I’d say he’s arrived! Mostly All the keyhole whizzes do extensive overseas fellowships (so he’s trained with the best)plus, he’s paeds proficient on spinal nerves, that’s finite work. Actually, there’s not many plodders left these days the equipment is so high tec, it’s the young ones leading the surgical field now.
Sounds like you’ve tried all the usual avenues of treatment. And you”ve certainly helped yourself enormously with losing 20 kilos! We’ll all stop stressing and just let you relax into the wait for your op. I also had to take early retirement from hands on nursing for the same reason.
Still get the burning when I overdo it, but it is much better these days, posture matters, and wt loss helps tremendously. Be kind to yourself, my friend and try not to let the frustration get you down. Just look around at all you’ve created (half masted!)and be proud of YOU! We will beat the plateaus, too! Enjoy the cricket. It’s rugby league up this way. Another fast day nearly over, Hope you all went well.
GG So I give up! if its got nothing to do with cats, why are they howling????? Unless you & CG are going to a Michael Mosley event to get a logie for your contributions!!!! Gyps
I can’t tell you how much I appreciated all your replies and warm welcomes! What a special cyber community you’ve created! I think you’re all right re my question about whether or not to tell people about 5:2. Hopefully I can let the results speak for themselves. I’m a long distance runner and yoga enthusiast but even so, I have really struggled with my weight and digestion. The exercise can’t quite cut the comfort eating! It’s affected my confidence big time and im really trying to “chip away” at the unhealthy spare tyre I’ve accumulated! I’m so inspired by your stories and I really do believe you’ve got some magical momentum going on here.
Anyway, thanks a million for the very warm welcome and it felt much easier on today’s fast day knowing that you were all in the same boat, trying weird and whacky combos to get to the 500 mark (Vegemite and hot water… sounds exotic and it very much sums up this thread – Aussie determinism!)
Hi all you great gals (don’t think we have any guys?!)
Loving all the chat about books…lots of interesting writers for me to research!
GG – you’re certainly teasing us with the cryptic clues…Suejen, I got such a giggle from your guess, ha ha! I’m sure you have definitely seen the back of the 76s.
Yellow – sorry you have not been well, but you have a great attitude and will be back on track in no time.
CG – I think you have hit the nail on the head in identifying the need to drink more fluids. For me, that was a real turning point when I began to see a steady drop in my weight so I now keep a bottle of water beside me and sip from it all day, refilling it two or three times, as well as drinking plenty of green tea.
DoitinP – so glad you enjoy tuning in to this thread…maybe we can turn it into a novel!! Hey!!!!!just had a moment of inspiration…GG has secured us a book deal!!!!!!!!!
You gals are certainly coming up with very good imaginary guesses BUT! are nowhere
close to the goal!
DAY 3 CLUE: Maine is in the USA…. would you find a rustic castle there?
Fasting today ..as have the day off …so will have the success in the fast.
MISS YELLOW and TASKET- welcome to Aussie Determination. Enjoy your journey with 5:2 and this unique bunch of determinators who will be there to support and encourage you.
GUESS AWAY TEAM…….heheheh…….GO GALxxxxxx
Hi all. I’m in a bit of a rush. Reading all your interesting posts and running out of time. Some of you may want to Google- Ghrulen. I may have spelt it incorrectly. From some info I got ( on another’ fad diet) it is a hormone secreted by the body in response to dieting. It causes hunger and has been labeled the hunger hormone. I’ll do some more research when I get back.
One of you mentioned poisonous snakes. Well we have them – tiger snakes plus Huntsman spiders. For our honourary Aussies, these are large spiders that like getting into our houses. Especially if you live close to the bush like me. Yesterday I came across a monster while dusting. The bugger fell to the floor and Pepper the pup thought it looked like a great play thing. I landed up beating the poor thing to submission with my feather duster. I don’t usually like killing them but they can be aggressive. I think their bite would be fatal to a small pup.
Yes I too enjoy Bill Bryson but some of it is very USA orientated. Didn’t he write a hilarious book about English?
Gotta go.
Doggy
Phew, thanks Go Gal 🙂
Doggie – Yes, interesting about the hormone (Ghrelin). Named after – wait for it- the growling noise our tummies make when when hungry. This hormone is the one that gives the stomach signals to tell us that its empty and needs to be filled 🙂
Huntsman spiders are not usually poisonous I think (just big and tres ugly).
Hi all, today is my 2nd fast day. I picked today because yesterday was a public holiday in SA, and today I had lots of appointments so was going to be busy. However, my baby is unwell 🙁 so that has changed everything. But I will still be busy. I’m sorry if I don’t/won’t get on here much – not enough time in the day! But I’ll check in when I can, and for weigh in days (once I’ve bought myself some new scales).
I’ll be needing the support!
P.S huntsman spiders are good, albeit scary to look at! I like them because they kill/eat white tail spiders which I absolutely hate *shudder*
Hi all
You have all been busy will have to go back over a few pages.
Had a lovely time in Cairns , one problem though my sister who I stayed with decided she wasn’t going to cook do we ate out for lunch and dinner for 5 days. I wasn’t very happy, because the food places we went didn’t really have really healthy options. she was the driver so, I went with it. We had lots of iced coffee as it was very hot a lot of shopping a few touristy spots. The birthday went well. So stood on scales this morning oh my goodness up 2kg. I know it’s not fat, mainly fluid so fasting today, instead of yesterday. The good news is she was so excited about my weight loss she said I look so different.
Back onto the program today no eating till midday, might be along hour. Got plenty of washing to do so will be busy. 2kg be gone
I will read up later, read a couple of posts not making sense of what is going on. There is some clues some books to read and CG info on your back.
Everyone take care.
Bali
Good Morning AD’s
Had a great FD yesterday, apple at about 12.00pm, then chicken & lettuce for lunch, then another apple at 4.00pm and chicken and salad for dinner. Also had a small sugarless jelly (love them). 81.1 yesterday, 80.5 this morning. Very, very happy as don’t normally lose that much on a FD.
Hope you all did really well too!
Lotus, I luurve vegemite on toast, do not have it anymore (well maybe once every so often) so will give SJ’s vegemite in water a go as well.
Talking about books, I am just about to start Game of Thrones, (OH bought me for Christmas) watch the show and love it,the books are basically the same but I think they explain better.
I have just finished a 6 book story from Joy Dettman, has anyone read them? Would like to know what others have thought.
Have a great day everyone xx
Hi it’s me again. I’ve just had a squizz and been reading up on the hormones Leptin and Ghrelin. Lotus thanks for the info. That would be an omnopatomia type word. – I think. It makes interesting reading and shows that we are having to put up a battle on a number of fronts. BUT as that wise CG so often says – we can do it!
My FD yesterday wasn’t all that good. I stayed just under the 500 calories but got really hungry by late afternoon. I’m going to revert to having some protein ie and egg at lunch time. Ketosis kicked in though as I was up twice during the night for the loo.
Hmm I had a nasty Huntsman experience when living in country Victoria. After an early morning cuppa coffe I noticed a decidedly numb sensation on my tounge and lips. After some sleuthing I discovered a well boiled Huntsman in my kettle. Ever since then I cover the opening with cling wrap. Maybe they are only poisonous when ingested! Oh the joys of country living, but I love it.
Doggy
“Ketosis kicked in though as I was up twice during the night for the loo.” Is that what it is? I do too nowadays and never have gotten up at night before, so I was thinking maybe I was drinking too much water… Good to know.
Doggy – a numb tongue after an entree of well-boiled huntsman would be one way to fast 🙂 but jokes apart, nasty experience for sure.
CG, just take care not to overdo it once the pain is blocked!
GG, there’s some event in Castlemaine you and CG are ?attending. or…. um.. You’ve given up wine and hit the Fourex! ? inherited the Castlemaine xxxx beer factory!
Just dropped in to say Hi,all! And happy to report am back down to the 85’s! No time to natter. Have to trek to town (20k’s) to stock up before the cyclone rain starts and panic buying empty’s the shelves. tho it is blue and calm at present. Local headlines say we’re in a ‘Cyclone sandwich’ as Twin cyclones brew and are expected to head in from East and West coasts by Thursday. We’ll get rain if nothing worse (The ants are leaving the dry gullies around here, that’s a sure sign of flood rain coming). So I get cut off then. Might as well have a Sav on hand, and a good book if the internet goes down…hohum… I’ll be sharing with the wildlife again. Huntsmen spiders are harmless, Doggy, your puppy is in no danger. Guess some of you in WA will be on the cyclone watch too. Take care, all. xxxgyps
ok…..I am feeling that my cryptic clues may be a tad difficult for a bunch that are all so intelligent and imagitive ! Here is another which was for DAY 4, tomorrow but I am feeling generous so here it is……MUST BE THE BLINKEN SAV BLANC that I did just happen to allow for in my 500 cals Fast Day.
An uneven drew was carpeting the lawns of Castlemaine…the mexican tried to save the cathouse from its inhabitants causing a theatrical performance warranting an overwhelming applause! While young Mr Grace looked on saying “YOU HAVE DONE VERY WELL”
Have fun guessing…….Go Galxxxxxx
Gogal you’ve GOTTA be joking when you say you’re feelin’ generous with this clue! I’d hate to see what clues you give when you’re in a stingy mood!! Boy I have no bloomin’ idea. Hope someone else does cos madam secretary is at a total loss. Will enter that in the minutes now.
But hey I had to laugh after typing that………fancy trying to take minutes for this lot! What a nightmare of a job.
Well weigh-in this morning and I was down to 75.3kg so happy with that. Loss of 4.2kg in 6 weeks, not huge but good for me. Total lost so far (started before 5:2 is 7.2kg). Bust -11cm Waist -6cm Hips -4cm Yeah have started to catch up a bit with the hips!
A bit late posting today as had old friends come for lunch. Made a lovely chicken/mango salad with avacado/fetta cheese/capsicum/lettuce. I poach the chicken & then mix it with 1 tbsp of mango chutney – yummy. Might add in a bit of the mango juice next time too, make it really juicy & tasty. So maybe just boiled eggs for tea or mushrooms on toast OR tell OH the kitchen is closed unless he wants to get something! Oh, made a chia dessert which was meant to be a healthy version of a Banoffee Pie. OH described it as a write-off (how nice!) but I’d have to agree. It wasn’t that tasty & didn’t quite set & a few other issues. So…..out with that recipe!! Serves me right for trying out a new recipe on friends. It was OK.
Fasting again tomorrow as have a dinner out with my best mate for her 60th birthday on Thursday. The wine etc will be flowing freely. Will see what the damage is on Friday & may do a 4:3.
Will read up on more posts & everyone’s stories/poems/guesses/goings-on tonight folks. Off for a walk. sj
BUT…..SJ…. I AM being generous….. Remember I’m “THE TRESURE” I did say that you guys had to do a bit of investigative research as well…..Who knows ,and he does not!…. clues maybe on our thread…… Darling !pls do not stress … To be easy on you, although I am splitting my sides and crying with laughter !!! I really do not expect you to guess the answer, You have incredible humour LOL….. You will understand when all is revealed…. HUGS to you………GO GAL
DRUM ROLL DA DA DAH……. NOW AUSSIE DETERMINATORS ALL WILL BE REVEALED!!!!!!!!
A BIG AUSSIE WELCOME BACK TO OUR ANDREW OF CASTLEMAINE ……HIP HIP HOORAY….HOOT HOOT….. WHISTLE WHISTLE.
So good to have you home . The team have been trying so hard to find out my surprise.
ANDREW … we are all looking forward to your posting …. Please never take such a long sabatical again.
Congratulations all of you . I know the clues were very cryptic BUT OH so worth it…WELL DONE ALL OF YOU……….GO GAL
Hi there, another Aussie here. Today was my first day. I enjoyed working out the calories and how to best use them today. It’s 8.54 pm and I’ve used my limit and I’m so wanting to go to the pantry. I won’t but I do want to. I’m looking forward to sleep and tomorrow when I can have breakky . Why is everything on tv about food :-))
Morning AD’S……. In NSW we call Victorians Mexicans sth of the NSW border.
Andrew is in a theatre company called “The Cathouse Players”.
He quoted “young Mr Grace would be pleased … you have all done very well” when we all had a good loss one week……..Hope you all had some fun. Now we can get back to 5:2 Have an awesome day……GO GALXXXXXXX
G’day team. Welcome Ozzie Girl. You will find this thread very informative and supportive. Suejen we do all seem to have a lot in common. I too am finding Go Gal’s cryptics difficult to fathom. I’m very fond of cryptic crosswords but have not yet managed to work out her clues.
Miss Yellow I’m a person who does not like cooking. I tend to have the same FD meals most days. I have some smoked salmon and a boiled egg for brekkie. I try and make that as late in the day as I can. I’ve found I get too hungry if I miss lunch so often have another boiled egg – protein takes longer to metabolise and does not spike Insulin levels so it staves off hunger. While the weather is still quite warm i usually have lots of salad plus Birds Eye steamed fish for dinner. I usually manage to keep to the 500 calories. If I’m a bit over I don’t fret. I’m still losing weight and feeling well.
Gypsy, do stay safe with your cyclone sandwiches. I trust that you have stocked up sufficiently plus some Sav Blanc for emergencies. Do you have a generator if the power goes down? We too live in a part of the world where we occasionally get cut off by flood waters. We keep lots of canned food and other non perishables for these occasions.
I’m having another FD today as tomorrow is not going to fit in for me. I too drink plenty of fluids. Mostly water
Cheers Doggy
