  • Hi folks, I’m just starting out here and haven’t actually begun fasting yet. I’ll be 60 in 20 weeks time and I’d love to hit my birthday 20lbs lighter than I am now. In the past I have failed totally to lose weight and keep it off. I’ve done various slimming “clubs” and my own calorie controlled diet but got thoroughly depressed with the restrictions they imposed on me. Are there any other nearly-60s out there to tell me this is going to work!

Hi, Kat56. I started this way of eating about 2 months after my 60th — in March. I weighed about 130-131 (at 5′ 2″). This weekend I briefly flirted with the high end of 118. My lowest weight as an adult was 116 when I was a really strict Atkins follower in my early 40s. EVERYTHING now fits. Granted I have been doing this only since March but I can see how this works as a lifestyle.

20 lbs in 20 weeks is definitely possible. In addition to reading about 5:2, many of us on these boards also recommend The Obesity Code by Dr. Jason Fung. Lots of explanation why intermittant fasting v daily calorie restriction makes so much sense.

Good luck. We’re here for you.

Hi Kat, welcome here. I turned 59 in June and started 5:2 the July before that, so I have just finished my first year. It is a lovely thing to do! I have lost over 10 kg over the year, probably a bit slower than most because chronic illness means I have a very sedentary lifestyle, but I don’t mind! I am down to size 8 – 10 from size 16 – 18 and feel so much better for it.

By the way, If you would like to come over to the mid fifties thread https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/mid-fifties-just-starting-and-hoping-to-lose-weight-yet-again/page/79/#post-158955 and chat with those of us there, you’d be welcome (they don’t kick us off if we stop being mid 50’s! 😉 )

Im 55 lost 20 kg over one year and have been in maintenance mode since March. It works but only if you want it to. It is not a magical wand that allows you to eat as you please. Don’t expect to to eat sugary treats as often as you want and lose weight. Cut out simple carbs like bread, pasta, rice, potatoes. They are sometimes foods. Cut out fruit juice, its just sugar water. Eat a whole piece of fruit instead.

Good luck it works, if you want it to.
