Lizzypopbottle, I am sure not going to mess with you – whatever your age!

Oh dear, Cheeseplease. I’ve just noticed. I’m supposed to be an art historian and I can’t even spell Botticelli! Slapped wrist. 🙁
Great contribution, Lizzy. How would it be if some patronising clever clogs tried to pull the ‘little old lady’ routine on you and you quickly switched to 4th-dan mode? Serve ’em right, I say!
By coincidence, Him Indoors (my 69-year-old toy boy) has just learnt that having passed all the relevant exams he is now officially qualified to teach in the Life Long Learning sector, including in the public sector, e.g. NHS, local authorities etc. His subject, Qi Gong and Tai Chi.
I’ve also kept my age a mystery to my fellow MA students – not that anyone has ever asked – for fear that some of the younger ones might suddenly go all respectful and ultra-considerate on me, rather then treating me as a member of the gang.
Of course, the academic and admin staff officially know, but this particular college of London Uni specialises in part-time degrees for people at work or with other commitments and the demographic ranges from school-leavers to people in their 80s and 90s. The attitude is that if you couldn’t walk the walk and talk the talk you wouldn’t be there.
I have never, ever come up against patronisation from anyone there – apart from a registrar who somehow managed to lose my BA certificate and my PGCE (for non-UK friends that’s our post-grad teaching qualification) and tried to accuse me of forgetting to send them in, not realising of course that had I not submitted them them I wouldn’t have been admitted in the first place.
Many thanks PurpleVE for your lengthy reply – very much appreciated.
Your comment about once we start to eat we begin to feel hungry rang so true – I have always been like that – once I’ve eaten something I can (on a bad day) graze all day long.
My pattern for a FD at the moment is to have a 200 cal meal around 2 p.m. and then try and wait until around 7 for the remaining calories. I recently saw an interview with Michael Mosley and he agreed that not eating a breakfast is not a bad thing – quite a contradiction from what we have always been told about breakfast being the most important meal of the day!
Welcome Jennyh: I’m fairly new to this way of eating and finding that it suits me very well – I manage the FDs with interesting food combinations and lots of diversions, knowing that the following day I can eat up to my TDEE. I too am an emotional eater which has been the downfall of many a diet, but on the FD we do not have to be deprived of our favourite foods – just keep within our TDEE. Also if we have a slip-up on a FD we don’t have to feel ‘guilty’, etc. – just fast the following day instead.
You’ll get all the support and advice you need from the lovely LOACA, good luck
I’ve been very naughty today. Nothing to do with food, I’ve been fasting like a good’un. The problem is I keep breaking away from the Brazilian art critic whose hi-falutin’ langage has to be turned, not only into English, but the sort of English that is simple but elegant. This up-himself arty-farty is getting up my nose! Goes with the territory, I’m afraid. Most of the time it’s great fun, though.
Suffice to say, the odd bit of wit and wisdom from you guys is just what the doctor ordered.
Quick message for PVE in Oz. We’ve just cooked and eaten your chili fish and it seriously yum and very very filling. I was a bit wary of the zero noodles but mixed in with something spicy like this they work very well and save shedloads of calories. Thanks for passing the recipe on.
Anyone who’s interested in finding good 5:2-friendly things to eat, do take a look on the LOACA recipe thread. Now I really will get on with some work.
Hi BooBoo welcome back, hope you had a good time.
I am having a hard time keeping up to speed with all these posts. Walking and playing my bowls games keeps me occupied and I am loving it with all the lovely weather we have had. I lost another pound at WW today.
Welcome to all the newbies.
Happy fasting or feasting JIP
Damn…for the first time, I just lost my post! That will teach me for lying in bed trying to edit it on the phone 🙁 Hit the wrong spot!
From the top…
Welcome back Precious. I’m so pleased you enjoyed being a tourist in your own town. I have lived in our Newcastle several times in my life and was looking forward to seeing yours, but somehow we shot straight past on our way to Scotland. Next time.
I’m not quite at 9 stone (a couple of pounds over) but am not really trying. I fast properly twice a week these days, but don’t think much about the other days. I just naturally eat less now that I’m used to it.
As to miracle noodles, they are about $3.50 in supermarkets here, but are often on special for much less. I buy up big then. At Chinese stores they are $1.80. Even at the top price, I believe they are well worth it for keeping us slim and satisfied twice a week, especially in winter when lettuce is less appealing.
Hermaj, I’m pleased you enjoyed the chilli swordfish dish. It IS a seriously good flavour, isn’t it? I went back to uni when I was 41. I loved it and did exceptionally well. I was one of the few who landed a full time permanent job afterwards. We ‘old girls’ can certainly show ’em!
Hi to everyone else. Keep up the good work and enjoy every day. Cheers P
Hi Precious
$3.50AUD is 1.93 pounds Stirling (I have no pounds symbol) and $1.80 is just under a pound. They come in lots of different disguises. Look for any packet of noodles in liquid and check the calorie rating. If it is microscopic, they will do. The small packet is plenty for two servings. Could possibly do 3 but I don’t keep it.
Nice to chat direct 🙂 P
Hi Jenny and Mirham
Welcome aboard. Drink lots if water every day, but especially on fast days.
One thing to do if you haven’t already. Please measure every part of yourself. Arms around bingo wings, thighs, hips, waist, bust, anywhere that you wish to lose fat from.
You will be thrilled to find that even when the weight does not go, you will lose fat off these areas. They are a great motivator. 🙂 B
Hi Precious
Nice to hear you had a good break up here in the normally frozen but now sweltering north east. It’s been so hot and humid up here in Northumberland for what seems like months. Whereabouts on the coast were you staying?
I’ve embarked on week three of the FBD doing 4:3 but things will wobble (in more ways than one!) next week when I go across to Lancaster for a week. I’ll be straight back to the second three week stint when I get home though. Two more fasting days to go before my dog Charlie and I set off. I really do feel better even after so short a time. The scales have gone down by half a stone and my waist measurement is slowly nudging back into the healthy range. No complaints!
Hi Boo. Thanks for the welcome. I’ve been reading your thread for quite a while but not contributed before because I’m not quite of a certain age yet… and not sure I could keep up with everyone!
Anyway, after lurking at the edges for a while, and having reached goal, I spotted the maintenance thread and that’s my ‘home’ now. However I’ve since realised that I might have something of value to contribute elsewhere so stick my oar in at random!
And you do Happy mate!
Precious, I just found a post by SAMM on 1/4/14 (it is in a noodle topic) with lots of noodle recipes and a link to wikipedia re Shirataki noodles http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirataki_noodles#Other_names
Might be worth looking at. P
BooBoo: welcome back from holiday. Thank you for my Star LOACA of the Week Award. You are my co-dependent enabler….encouraging me to endulge my spendthrift side. But one could argue that it is healthy to reward oneself with something other than food for a change.
Welcome to the new gals Lizzy and Happy. Glad you are both back for repeat performances. Glad to have you. Tartan Lass, welcome aboard.
Hi LUVTC
Thanks for all your contributions to the recipe thread. It IS making progress!
Did you see my posted variation on the stuffed mushroom? It was an eating day yesterday and the mushrooms looked good. The blue cheese and avocado were yum!
Nobody needs to be left unsatisfied on this WOE. The trick is to find foods that are both really tasty AND low calorie. The world is your oyster (at only 10 calories each) P
Hi Ladies!
Thankyou so much for welcoming me onboard !Yesterday I was not fasting and noticed that I didn´t get ” crazy” having the chance to eat just what ever I would like to!
Tell me ,how do you do the fasting timewise ? Do you stop eating the day before fasting at 6 pm ? My next fasting day will be on Thursday,so today I just eat “whatever” I want..
Mornings I usually drink coffee with a litlle milk ,is that ok ?Do you drink diet Coke or other diet stuff ?
Hope you all have a lovely day ,it´s time for my breakfast !
Hi Mirjam
Coffee or tea with a splash of milk is fine. I never touch Diet Coke or any other Diet product, as I think of all those chemicals I don’t want in my body. I am a sugar addict and I am trying to get my body to lose its focus on sweet foods. Another reason that my snacks of choice are carrots, celery, a few raw Brazil nuts or raw almonds.
Have fun! B
Sorry tho hear you aren’t our usual little ray of sunshine, Bay.
I’d pop down and take you for a spin if it would help? Be there about 8….oh, wait on, imagine if I get stuck behind a semi full of cows on the Hume, after they have spent a big day on the grass.
Sorry. You’ll just have to imagine me hosing myself and the car down 😉 P
Hi Mirjam
I think you’re asking me for rules. I can only answer for myself and what I do. You need to read Michael Mosley’s book for any rules applicable to 5:2.
I keep well away from sugar and sugar substitutes, and I aim for home made meals wherever possible. Having said that, we treat ourselves to a meal out maybe once a fortnight. Usually Vietnamese, Burmese, Japanese as they are light on fat and grains. We eat mainly tasty vegetables and chicken or fish or a little beef. And we never eat fast food. There are lots of good recipes in Mimi’s book or on the LOACA thread.
I do a few sports, although not as actively as I did years ago. Right now I walk, golf, orienteer in the bush, and I scrub and paint internal house walls. O, and I prune and weed the garden, with the occasional lawn mowing. I try to incorporate the walking into my daily life, such as walking to the shops.
Hope I don’t sound too grumpy today. Have lost my ray of sunshine. No doubt it will come back tomorrow on my fast day. B 🙂
Hi Mirjam,
Nothing is forbidden, you just have to take account of it. Personally I’m with Bay on diet (or even non diet) coke type drinks. I just don’t think they are healthy. I’m also with Bay on reducing processed carbs and sugar/ sweetener use as they just sabotage weight loss efforts (raise insulin/ blood sugar).
On a fast day I start with tea (with milk). I like my coffee with more than a splash however (ideally a latte!), so now use almond milk in my morning coffee.
Don’t worry about increasing (or not!) exercise just now: it will help you tone up and improve your health, but it doesn’t necessarily help with weight loss. I did not increase my activity levels, and did not count calories, but managed to average more than 1lb per week loss and am now at goal and maintaining.
I also incorporated longer fasting windows as this seems to be important for reducing insulin. As I’m not really a first thing in the morning eater, and eat low carb, it is easy for me. So last meal on nf day at 7-8, first food on fast day at 11-12, finish eating by 7-8, next day (nf) first food at maybe 11ish. So I would have two 16hr windows without food, and one 24hr window with reduced calories.
Everyone is different and one size does not fit all! Get started, see how you get on and adjust as necessary. Good luck!
Hi Mirjam and Happy and Purple
Thank you for ignoring my little dummy spit and for cheering me up. 🙂 my OH has asked me out to dinner. That’s always a treat. 🙂 tried on more swimsuits today as DJs in Canberra has just received its first batch of swimwear. for next season. Definitely have now become a size 12, which is truly amazing. 🙂
Cheers to you all, ON and DW. B 🙂
Hi Happy Now !
Thankyou you gave me alot of good advise!
Today I´m not fasting.Like yesterday. Tomorrow fasting the second fastingday.
You´ve all lost so much I have big hopes, though I´m slow in loosing weight.
Yesterday I didn´t feel like eating any sweets.It´s better I don´t …
Thankyou for wishing me good luck !
Have agreat day !
Mirjam
Good morning and good evening over the pond.
Hi BooBoo on the zero pasta/noodles H and B have a buy one get one for a penny offer on often, I have tried the slim pasta 21 calories for 100 grams, it’s 200g pack and I think when you add veg and you have to HAVE a sauce and what ever else you have with it is enough for two people.
Welcome to all the newbies, read back over our posts if you ever have time with trying to catch up with all of our daily posts LOL. 5-2 is the way to go. I am glad I found it, it keeps me in maintenance mode because I am a life time Weight Watcher at goal weight for 3 years this months.
Have a good day everyone. Fasting or feasting as the case may be. JIP
Hi Mirjam.
While weight loss may seem slow, realistically you should only expect 1lb per week, but it does soon start to make a difference in terms of body shape/ clothes fit.
What you also need to remember though, and this is in the book, is that weight loss is only one of the benefits of intermittent fasting. What you are in fact embarking on should properly be a lifestyle change, and not just quick fix weight loss, since the long-term health benefits will only be realised by practising intermittent fasting in some form for life.
So even if weight loss is slow, or stalls, remember that you are still improving your health in other ways.
Good morning, and a very good morning to you all.
I tried the low cal pasta yesterday – really good idea. Fills you up and doesn’t cost too many calories. I’ll try the rice next fasting day.
Lost another pound today, and my BMI is now 32.9. I know this is silly, but I really want to be out of the obese category and into the overweight. How sad is that. To want to be overweight. That’s goal number two, right after loosing my first stone.
I looked at the LOACA recipe strand and believe there are some interesting ones to try. Thank you all who have contributed, particularly Lovestocook.
Reading your posts is really encouraging. We are not alone.
Hello everyone,
Boo and Smiffy, Kenneth the calf is doing well. He has graduated from the baby calf milk bottle to the milk feeder hanging on the fence. He is totally silent though which is unusual, the calves I’ve raised previously have usually been noisy or noisier, letting me know when they are hungry and when they have just polished off 3 litres of milk, they still want more…
My weight is slowly creeping downwards in an erratic sort of way but I am changing shape for sure. I measured today and found as expected bust, waist, hips and thighs have gone down a bit but my calves (my legs) have increased! Must be my walk, jog, walk, jog, walk exercise toning muscles up. Most days I walk/jog back home from where we feed out hay to the cows – about 4km and sometimes I get offered lifts! It is considered very eccentric to be out walking or jogging on our dirt roads, a bit like a 4am walk might be in your part of the world Boo?
I tried my swimming togs today and they will do for swimming while I’m on holiday in Canada – in a swimming pool, no glacier filled lakes for me, there is no swimwear in the shops here anyway, it’s still winter. I don’t want to be losing weight while I’m away because I have a wedding to go to week after I come back and the dress I plan to wear fits ok now so I might have to do at least one weekly fast. I’ve tried on long unused shorts (because they were too snug) and find I have quite a few that fit comfortably now, so there’ll be more dithering when packing my holiday bag.
Off to bed now, then fasting tomorrow.
Have a good day fasting or feasting, VM
Hi Precious,JIP, Cheesy, Smiffy, Violet and the many, many others on here. Have had a fun night out with two of my kids and my SIL at an inner city pub. $3 tacos. Tiny, but very bitey! A lot of bang for our buck;) Then we moved on to another pub for coffee and cake. Sadly they only had mulled wine,no coffee, so I had a bit of cake and hit the road. Hubby is away, so I had to be the responsible driver…actually I was the only one in the car, too!
Hey Bay, You tried on the new swimsuits….did you BUY any? What are they like? Should I rush into DJs tomorrow before you buy them all? Size 12 sounds good. You’ll look fabulous 😉 Off to bed. Fasting in the morning. P
Hello ladies!
I’m a newbie – first day today – but have spent most of my time reading this thread, as it would appear it is where I belong 🙂 I’ve already picked up some great tips and hints and loads of ‘borrowed’ encouragement – meant for others but I’m having it too! I’ve been a lady of a certain age now for at least 8 years and to be honest have started to get peed off with it all, esepcially the weight gain – and I was so sure those old hormones wouldn’t get me…
Anyway, just wanted to check in and say hello and tell you this thread has given this old gal hope!
Thank you and keep up the good work everyone. I’m off for a ginger and lemon tea…it’s quite nice, which is a surprise for a coffee-holic like me.
Hello Boo!
Thank you for the very speedy welcome. You’ve made my day. I did think, ‘what a lovely, encouraging thread’ and just thinking that made it easier to pop along and say hello. I will definitely be back to let you know of my progress (fingers crossed) I really am a bit piqued at the moment with something my mum said to me yesterday – bless her, she is 81. When I said about going on diet she basically said, ‘well, you are nearly 60 and the fat just goes on…’ Actually she fired me go get going again properly, so not all bad 🙂 I’ve always been careful with my weight and never more that a few pounds over weight at any time – so this little lot is really a HUGE shock for me. Still, as so many ladies on here are having great success, I’m sure to be inspired.
Thank you. x
BTW e-cig vaper: Something else that hasn’t helped with the weighty issue is, I gave up smoking in February and started ‘vaping’ instead. They are called e-cigs but look more like pens, that you put liquid into and inhale (vapour / steam) instead of the darsteadly smoke and all the nasties that involves. Yep, I gave up smoking and put on 9lbs to go with the other 9lb that I’ve accumulated in the last 18 months. Hey-ho…I’m saving loads of money, really, with not smoking, but I don’t want to have to spend all that lovely dosh on new clothes! urghghhh
Fun times for us ladis of a certain age. I’m coming back as a bloke next time. I am. 🙂
