Starting to plateau weight wise

  • Hello Everyone,
    I’m a 47 year old male who has enjoyed good food and wine for most of my life.
    I started the 5:2 after seeing Michael’s documentary.
    My starting weight was 104.7kg and my BMI was 29.9.
    After 10 weeks I am down to 98.3kg with a BMI of 28.1.
    The first 5 weeks were great. I dropped 6.6kg and went down a waist size in my jeans. I visually looked slimmer.
    My target weight is 90kg. However my weight loss has plateaued in the last 5 weeks.
    I religiously stick to my 600cal per day every Monday and Thursday. I have been doing 50 push ups and crunches every night. I feel fitter than I was before starting the 5:2. On non-fast days I try and stick to wholesome foods.

    My question is the plateauing weight loss normal?

    The average weight loss for a man your size is a little over a pound a week. You are right on schedule. Weight loss goes in ‘fits and starts’ so it is not unusual to lose a lot followed by no losses for awhile.

    The TDEE link will explain how much you can reasonably expect to lose over time. The Plateau post covers the issue, but your situation really does not qualify.

    I think plateaus are common for every eating plan! I remember when I went to Weight Watchers meetings, folks religiously following the plan still plateaued after a while.

    You lost weight and you say you’re fitter. That’s great! Yes, I personally feel a plateauing weight loss is normal, to answer your question.
