  • Hi all!

I’m now a keen swimmer and fitter than I’ve been in a very long time, but also at my heaviest ever and looking to lose 4 stone. This is my typical exercise week:

i)’Masters’ club on Tuesday evenings 7.30pm, 2500m in just under 1.5 hours. It’s all 4 strokes as sets and drills, so we work anaerobically and aerobically.

ii)8.30pm Wednesday evening I am taking ‘stroke improvement’ lessons which only lasts 30 mins, although I still get pretty puffed out.

iii)On Saturday morning, 8am, I go lane swimming, anywhere between 1000m to 1600m, for 45 minutes.

When the other half is away (a month at a time) I walk our energetic young dog 1.5 hours a day. I also have a horse, but can’t really do much with him at the moment as I am too heavy and have arthirtis in my hip.

I’m planning to have Fast days on Mondays and Thursdays – do you think those days will work? I’m especially concerned that I have enough energy for Tuesday evenings.

The only way to find out is to try it, but there is no reason why you should lack energy.
I go to the gym three mornings per week and at least two mornings are the day after a fast day. I do an hour of cardio vascular work, then some resistance training and follow that up with a swim. I don’t break the fast until after I get home from the gym. I haven’t noticed any difference in energy levels regardless of whether I have fasted the day before or not.
The point is that if there is insufficient glycogen to fuel exercise then the body will burn some fat in order to provide it which is what we are all trying to achieve.
    Good luck 🙂

Thanks for the reply Amazon – you reminded me of my equine exercise physiology and nutrition classes! If I find it difficult to start with its probably not going to be a permanent problm because my body needs to adjust to fat burning. You’ve been really helpful 🙂

I used to think I would have no energy on a fast day. I now fast for 48hours at a time and during that time I am able to complete 2 very hilly 4.5 mile walks in just over an hour each. I actually find it easier while fasting than on a feed day (on which I feel more sluggish). I know that sounds odd, but I honestly have more energy for exercise without food. Maybe it’s just me?

Your Tuesday workout might be hard on a fast day, but otherwise I think you’ll be fine. If you find you are hungry after workouts, time your main meal for an hour or two after the workout.
