  • I’m doing ADF and today is a fast day. I think I would be able to go the whole day with no food, but I’m wondering if that is advisable since I’m doing ADF.

    Hi idonot:

It depends on how long you have been on IF. If you have just recently started, I suggest you continue eating on diet days for at least four or five weeks to allow your body to adjust and for you to see how you feel after that time period.

If you have been doing IF for a couple of months, understand how it makes you feel and you feel OK, then not eating would be a reasonable experiment. Water fasters go for weeks without eating anything, so not eating every other day is possible.

But I guess you have to answer why you want to do it? Are you not losing weight fast enough? Are you diabetic or pre-diabetic? You should have a very good reason for doing it before you start, because if it does not work out you may totally quit IF and lose the many benefits that come from it.

    Good Luck!

Thanks. This is my first week. I’m doing IF 60% for health 40% for weight loss. I have hypertension and I think this has a good chance of helping with that.

    Hi idonot:

ADF will help with the two ‘top’ suggestions to lower your blood pressure – weight loss and reduction in salt intake. Perhaps alcohol, too. I suggest you go for a month or two before you try anything different. And if you find ADF too hard, as many do, don’t quit IF, convert to 5:2. It works fine, just more slowly.

Looking some time forward, this study may be of interest as it demonstrates the single best method ever found to reduce high blood pressure: https://www.scribd.com/doc/32727377/Medically-Supervised-Water-only-Fasting-in-the-Treatment-of-Hypertension

    Good Luck!

I started fasting for health benefits alone 4 water fast days once per month. I then choose to add 5:2 in particular because I thought it would be the most sustainable. 16 months in and I’ve got health benefits in spades but I do a heavily modified version that truly isn’t 5:2.

If I had to do it all over again and I was able to re-arrange my life (not likely) I would like to do a 28 day fast probably at TrueNorth Health Center.

My longest fast as been just into the seventh day. I don’t go longer due to family requirements. A ten year old son and the requirement to go out and drive and be mobile and active at 60 something does take some planning.

I find ADF just a bit much. For me. I can do the 5:2 fast stretched to 40 hours twice a week and I’m good with that. I guess it’s almost 4:3

Fasting whatever form you choose to do has to fit you. It has to be personal to you. If you can’t manipulate the eating pattern to be fully integrated into your life and it becomes second nature and almost automatic, you will end up failing/stopping.

Keep in it for the long haul it has to work “forever” after all. When you find your fit you’ll be happy you stuck with it.
