  • Well that just about sums it up, had oedema probs now 30+yrs I would say it’s been sever at long spells and just wondered if I can get little Med advice from anyone?
I have now lost 22lbs + feel fantastic love this WOE big style I’m in it forever.
But getting very depressed about my feet because when I retired my condition was so much better that I now have wardrobe full of footwear (never fitted into anything)
I stopped taking co-codamol and it got somewhat better then 4weeks later got fast diet book and got on the journey my doc says they couldn’t have been reason but absolutely nothing else was different, so I’m convinced of course.
What else can I do or try ? My doc says its an ongoing problem + yes it is but its ruining my life + when I go back 8wks time I’m going to say I need HELP.
    Thanks in advance. Sue

I also have oedema in the feet and ankles and since I started the fast diet a month ago it has steadily worsened. The up shot it that while I may be losing fat my weight overall has remained the same, more or less. Is the diet affecting the oedema?

Hi Derek well at least my oedema hasn’t got worse, slightly better actually, I suppose I’m a little impatient but after a 22lbs loss I would have expected it to be better than this, first thing in the mornings they’re brilliant so I just wish they would stay that way. Can’t believe yours has worsened + no weight loss.
This was probably last hope for me also but its so working I’m so chuuffedd,
And that leads to more motivation of course, I’m doing 4:3 simply coz I’ve a shed load of weight to shift, completely skip breakfast + lunch thus making it 24hrs fast day I’m M/Obese and never expected to find it so easy. Good Luck Sue

Going to my doctor soon will let you know what he says

Good luck at the docs Derek I’m seeing the nurse in about 4 weeks + will mention it to her but not holding my breath, Was hoping Dr Claire might pop in but maybe she thinks I have heart condition (which I don’t ) and doesn’t want to get involved, but seriously I was just wondering WHY now I’m close to a 2 stone loss !!! Could it be something in doing SALT?? Help wanted/needed PLEASE Sue

You have me a bit concerned now! I have very mild oedema which came on recently and my doc says it is the high blood pressure tablets. I certainly hope it does not get any worse on this diet. (I have just started)

Hi PuterMan my oedma hasn’t got any worse since doing this WOL it’s just that I have now lost 2 stone and I know I’ve a very long way to go but I was expecting my ankles to be a little better than they are, so a little disappointed on this matter only. Love doing it and it is so working for me, but yes I believe some good pressure pills can have side effect of puffy legs + ankles, so you could ask your Doc next time you visit. My problem isn’t puffy its total solid bulk half way up my legs.
On the other forum I asked for advice regarding salt and got loads of help!!!
Been using low salt for about 20 years, but a surprise to me was also carbohydrates can cause water retention, so now looking into salt+carbs surprisingly no similar advice from either of the docs on board here. I’m seeing the nurse in 3/4wks as she’s away so going to get some answers one way or another as no one down surgery has any idea of my weight lost so far, will try for a few more lbs before I see her. Good luck to you.Sue

I dropped coffee and started drinking tea and – the oedema has gone!!

Was it the two weeks of the diet or the tea? Probably the tea. Interesting about carbohydrate – did not know that.

Puterman how lucky are you I only drink coffee probably one per week so that’s not
my problem, it hasn’t got any better either, so I’ll just have to wait until I see the nurse, and on top of that I seemed to have hit a plateau, so no more weight lost
    Good Luck to you. Sue

Hi Sue.Q and Derekheron – I have just come across your posts about oedema. Chronic oedema can be troublesome (as you know)and hard to shift – as you say, it can be caused by heart (and or the kidneys) not functioning as efficiently, resulting in the body retaining salt. Hopefully this is not this is the case for you. You have probably tried reducing your salt intake? Does it settle if you put your feet up at times during the day or wear support tights? Interesting to hear from Puterman that dropping coffee helped – worth a try to cut/ reduce tea and/or coffee. Steady weight loss can help improve the circulation enough to reduce oedema but it sounds as if this has not had the impact you had hoped Sue.Q which must be very frustrating. Particularly when you have done so brilliantly with the diet. Well done for loosing 22lbs! Glad to hear you are generally feeling better on it.
Oedema may also be affected by medication (tablets such as Amlodipine for high BP commonly cause oedema and alternatives have to be substituted). The other thing is to make sure you are getting enough protein in your diet. It may worth discussing with your doctor about reviewing your oedema & perhaps having some routine tests. Cutting carbs as you suggest would be well worth a try, perhaps on your non fast days as well and see if this helps and it may help shift you off the plateau too – do let us know how you get on. You may have already tried these suggestions already but perhaps some of it may be of help. best of luck, Clare

Hi Clare and many thanks for replying. Yes very frustrating as I’ve now lost 30 lbs
Losing weight always used to help but not this time so obviously something’s changed, my GP hasn’t been very helpful but I’m going to have to be really firm because it is really pulling me down after all the hard work I’ve put in I just want this one reward and firmly believe I’ve earned it. I am seeing the nurse next week and admit she or my GP has no idea of my weight loss so there all in for a surprise. Then I’ll drop the bombshell and insist on more investigation.
I tried lowering carbs no difference
I do use compression socks (knee-highs because I couldn’t get on with full length)
I have to have them made-to-measure because they are so bad
using low salt now for 20yrs
I only drink tea & filtered water. No change
    I. Do have protein at 2 meals daily. No change
My feet + legs are better. In the mornings
And I do elevate Some evenings
I do take perpinderol ( sorry about spelling ) but I’m asking nursy to take me of this
Have disgust this with the doc & allready dropped co-codamol at begining of this diet. Thanks again for the help and more Importantly. BiG Thanks to DR. M (hubby)
For this wonderful WOL. I’m feeling. fantastic and. Truly believe it’s saved/Lengthened. My life and it will be for life where I’m concerned. I’ve been doing 4:3 but would be happy to do 5:2 for Life if needs be with absolutely no hardship whatsoever. Sue

    Hi everyone
I am really interested in all of your posts , this is my second week at this diet , no weight loss as yet but I have reviewed my calories so I need to tweek a few things. However the Oedema is the worse its been this week! I will cut out coffee and will reduce my tea to see if it makes any difference. I am seeing a specialist , at some point about the Oedema in my ankles and lower legs , not sure when though I have to wait for an appointment. I am pretty miserable at the moment I’ve put on a stone in the last few months even though I work out 3-4 hours a week . I’m hoping this diet will help with the exercise , I am trying not to get down but with the Oedema as well I am feeling pretty ugly right now !

    Hi everyone
I have lymphodema in my left leg. This I had for46 years. I have lost 2kg in 3 days. I think my lymphodema has improved. This seems so incredible but maybe its a short term event. I’ll keep you posted.

Hi Tracy66 Well I know exactly how you’re feeling frustrated doesn’t sometimes cover it, for me I reduced the Carb -not much different, don’t drink much coffee so I suppose my 4/5 cups of tea will have to be next !!! I am walking on each of my 3 fastdays which has helped with the health side of it, not easy though as my walks are lanes not fields because I can only get Men’s adjustable sandals on my feet
So will probably have to give it up in the bad weather, this will be completely depressing for me as I’ve always enjoyed walking and only recently bought it back into my life, didn’t have much joy with the nurse but she was impressed with my weight loss and wanted to know how I’d lost my 30 lbs, surprisingly she endorsed this wol/woe, which is always nice to hear from someone in her profession.
However having said all that my feet/ankles are very Slightly/Fractionally improved
No one else would be able to see this as yet except me because I’m looking and hoping every day that comes. I’ve had to have a complete new wardrobe of clothes
all 3 sizes smaller than back in April so I’m very happy about this ( my interim ) clothes the charity shops can have these also when I drop another 3 sizes Lol
Pity about the shoes/sandals/boots in my ”other ” cupboard would just love to be able to wear them again. Hi Ellebell Glad you’re seeing results that’s brilliant as I’ve said before I love this. ” Miracle diet ” and everything about it, want my Very Big problem to get a little smaller then go away altogether doesn’t seem to be asking too much does it?. Good Luck. Sue

Hi everyone just an update. I have now lost 3 kg over 10 days which is really 4 fast days.Finding the fast days a bit tough. The up side by far is that my lympodema leg has remained reduced in size. This still seems incredible to me. I wondered if Michael Mosely would be interested in this observation ? Still keen to press on.

Hi Elliebell That’s fantastic news for you and well done on the weight loss,
I’m no nearer with my problem, but still losing at a slow pace now, can’t complain as I’ve done very well indeed. Good Luck. Sue

    Hi Everyone
As the new year approaches and a “new” me appears.

Long time away from this forum (lost password)
    But thought an update appropriate:::
8 months since started this WOL
50 lbs LOST!!!! Fantastic result and I’m thrilled
3 sizes down in my new clothes
Down a group in my BMI

The icing + cherry on the cake has been a vast reduction with my oedema, I had a carb overload during my late holiday because the food wasn’t very good at our hotel and gained. 5 KGS in the week!!!
Got back onto 4:3 and my reduced carb intake, down went the pounds and low and behold down went my feet + legs and for the first time ever they NOW stay down throughout the day brilliant, they’re not completely swelling free but I’ve not seen them like this for years.
don’t know why they reduced at that stage but I’ll take the bonuses along the way especially this one, hope this gives some of you hope.
As for 2014 well another 50lbs to get rid of, but with this WOL I now know I will make it to my goal and not only quite easily but also very enjoyable, also upping my exercise and buying the book.

Many Thanks to Dr.M.+ Mimi for writing the book and supplying the “tools” for us all to do the job.
and Mrs M for the reply. Sue x

    Hey Sue

I cannot say much because I must sign off but

    WAY TO GO GIRL!!!!!!!!!!

    All the Best for 2014!

Hi All ( An Update )
Well Christmas + new year hit hard I have gained 3lbs but I was also struggling to get back to basics gave myself a kick up the butt and put in 3 good days which actually produced another 2 lb gain (weird )
So I’m taking one week of from fasting and this week I’m refeeding my body yes eating breakfast+ lunch these 3 meals a day aren’t as enjoyable as I remember them being, no I’m not bingeing just back to basics I may do one fast on Thursday to kick back in so no more weightloss since my last posting but small gain.
Plus I’ve been reducing my carb intake and being open to changes in trying a few “unconventional” veggies for me at least, the squash, celeriac, turnip, and butternut squash all far lower carbs than my usual daily portion of potatoes and I’ve found far more filling.
♥ However my oedema is still improving and more importantly they now stay down all day long. This alone makes this WOL worthwhile for me because it had changed my life completely and I am now having my compression socks “off the peg” absolutely brilliant no more embarrassing measurement taking ♥
I Hope my story helps some of you with your problems and give you hope as you read my development in the various stages along my journey.
Now onto stage 2 another 50lbs to shift!!!. Sue
