  • Hi new to the forum. Have done the fast diet before with success (1 and a half stone) and having another go to shift the final 3 stones. Is anybody out there not weighing themselves? I find the result on the scales determines how well I do/my mood for the day. This is great if the scales have gone down but not if they haven’t budged. Some weeks I feel loads slimmer but the scales say not, and I’m disappointed. I know I should take my measurements into account but years of scale watching have taken their toll! Should I just measure myself, say once a month and not get on the scales? Have others tried this approach?

    Hi there Jinxed,
I am a non weigher! I have occasionally got on the scales at my daughters place but her scales are so inaccurate they aren’t much use. I have measured my waist a few times.
I tell how I am going with 5:2 by how I am feeling and how I look in the mirror and in clothes. This is a way of life for me so I don’t need to keep tabs on weekly increments. Also, I tried scales a few years ago and they do my head in. I threw them away.
I know that for lots of people it is important to them to weigh daily or weekly, but I much prefer doing without scales altogether! Give it a try!

Thanks Cinque! As a life long dieter I judge my progress purely on what the scales say and I’ve finally realised this is detrimental to my weight loss and health improvement. Will try not weighing and occasional measuring – clothes are as good an indication as the scales 🙂

I never was a dieter until 5:2, and I never weighed myself regularly either. Now though I continue to weigh daily, two years on from reaching goal.

I gain weight all over, not just round my middle, so by the time I notice my clothes are getting tighter I’m half a stone heavier.

That’s an interesting read thank you HappyNow. Having maintained my goal weight for many years in the past, I was happy to get on and off the scales to keep things in check. I personally think that while I’m losing, a gain on the scales can be off putting. I know logically weight can fluctuate daily and getting weighed every day proves this. I’ve tried just weighing after a fast day but even then it can go up and be demoralizing. When I get back to goal ( not if!) I would be happy to get on daily because you’re right, it does keep you in check.
