  • Hi all, I have decided to start the 5:2 diet as I turn 40 this year and my goal is to lose 40lbs by then!! (August!) Not sure if this is possible but shoot for the moon you may hit the stars and all that!
Any tips would be gratefully received. I’ve looked at my calorie count for non fasting days and it says 2275 which seems high? Would I still lose weight if I did that?
Also is there anyone out there who would like to be a “buddy” and check in with me on a weekly basis to keep me motivated and accountable?! I don’t know anyone else doing the diet so would like to have someone who can offer support!!
Thank you all in advance! :0)

@notfatat40 Hi and welcome to these forums.

I’ll start at the end of your post and work back.

On these forums you have, literally, dozens of ‘buddies’. We are all doing this together and are a mutual support group. If you need help, approval, praise for a great week, sympathy for a not so good one or even a ‘kick’ when you need one – you’ll always find someone here.

I assume you have found that your Total daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is 2275 calories. Ideally you should try to stay a bit below that on your non fast days and up to 500 calories on your fast days.

There are some notes here which might help

40lbs by August may be a bit of an ask (the average loss is around 1 lb per week – too much too fast it doesn’t stay off) but – hey! – shoot for the moon. Even if you don’t make 40lbs off you’ll be a long way towards it and feel great!

Good luck – everyone here really is behind you in this

    xx

Hi there Notfatat40 and welcome to the forums!

Sylvestra is spot on and you will get lots of support on here, you are not alone and you can do this 🙂

Good luck and let us know how you get on!!

Hi Nicki and welcome to the forum.
Its about 25 weeks until August (very roughly calculated in my head 😛 ) that means the best part of a 2lb loss per week. Phew! Most people find as I did, an average of 1lb per week is about the norm, just depends on how much you have to lose I suppose.
Have you read the book, taken your measurements and weighed yourself? Its up to you how often you weigh while IF but I am/used to be motivated by a weekly check.
You also need to check your TDEE here
    http://thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-calories-on-a-non-fast-day/
then eat your 500cals on your 2 fast days, and something between your BMR and TDEE on normal days.
You can eat whatever you usually eat on normal days but for a good weight loss mind your portion size.
I am sure most people on here will be happy to be your buddies and give you all sorts of advise and support.
Don’t be scared! It is a new way of life and eating. The fast days are a bit daunting at first but get easier as the weeks go on.
Plan your week so you know you can get your 2 fasts in and prepare for them. Sometimes life throws a wobble and you have to change your fast day unexpectedly but usually its no bother 😀
Its a very flexible regime which is why it is so sustainable and how so many of us yo-yo dieters have actually managed to lose loads of weight and adopted IF as our lifestyle.
    Good luck!
