  • Hi. Im 51 married with four children. I have struggled with my weight always. I have lost stones with Weight Watchers and Slimming World , but they changed their plans and I put weight on. I had a baby at 47 (not planned but wanted ) Since I cannot seem to lose more than a few pounds. I have paid out thousands in the past four years to lose weight. £300 in Feb for Hypnotherapy £300 last month for intolerance weight loss test. I have gone gluton free and not ate the intolerant food for two weeks and have Put Weight On ! I went to the Nurse today, as I am desperate now at 13stone 8lb . She said to try this 5.2 diet . She was not pleased I was told not to eat any meats other than Venison and Duck . No egg or wheat products. The diet they had told me was high carb-so no way would I lose weight. I am allergic to certain foods that did not show up on the Intolerance test. I had Mackeral for tea on a salad. Im now sat nauseus and my face is tingling and feels swollen . Im really hoping this way of eating works for me .

    Hi 9020Alexp,

It doesn’t sound great about your tingling face. Are you allergic to fish? Do you have any antihistamines in the house that you could take? If not would think about phoning NHS24 if you live in UK. I also avoid gluten (does not like me much). This is my 3rd week on 5:2 and today is a fast day. The first 2 weeks I lost 3 lbs. However, I had too much alcohol and food over the weekend (worth it at the time) so not overly hopeful for much weight loss this week. Hey ho as they say and will hope for better results next week.

I have found the forums to be very helpful and supporting.

    Good luck!

    Hi lazycat
Yes im allergic to some fish , im not keen on it at all actually. But because that was all I could eat on the intolerance results, I tried it. Also allergic to starch in potatoes, onion, mushrooms ,tomatoes some fruit and olives. None of these showed as “dont eat” on the results. All I was left with was veg, fruit and dairy .

I asked the nutritionist at the laboratory why had these not come up , even though I knew I had a reaction. She back tracked and said we test for intolerance not allergy . Funny that the first enquiry conversation, covered both issues. Her answer “read the small print “. 😮 Wasted £300 really !

Looking forward to starting tomorrow 🙂

Oh that’s rubbish. I think that I am intolerant to gluten (no formal diagnosis). The thought of eating gluten for 2 weeks for the test fills me with fear.

Hope all goes well for your fast! I am also going to try to fast and may be squeeze in another end of the week. Hope to undo the damage of weekend. Anyway I can only try. Am off work to day but have plenty to keep me busy.

    Good luck

I am very sympathetic to your intollerances – my sister and husband both have IBS which is triggered by certain foods. It can be a bit of a nightmare for them.

Your dieting sounds like mine over the past however many years… Weight watchers – started off well but when it got complicated I fell off the wagon. I don’t know how much spent on other plans and sure fire fixes. Nothing worked.

I started 5:2 as a diet. The first 2 weeks were horrible. I struggled to keep within limits on my feast days and felt dreadful on my fast days. That was mid January. Fast forward to mid April and it is better. In fact I am starting to drop my fast days this week. I have lost 9kg (20lb) and at least 1 dress size but looking at my trousers this morning it may be time to go down another size. The fasting taught me control, to accept sometimes being hungry and portion sizing. I still track everything that passes my lips on myfitnesspal and I have also added an exercise program. I really feel now that there is a bright future for me. I have 3kg to go until goal weight and I know I’ll get there.

    Good luck to you.

Lazycat and Cath Thanks for replies.
Did my fast day today . Im grumpy but have heard some people are. Ive done well and am pleased Ive stuck to it. The gluton bread is 46 cals a slice. Had salad and a muller lite. Got to choose another fast day yet. May do Mon and Wed regular.
Everything has gone wrong today and I have so wanted to blow it and eat cake- but then thought “I will still be fat ” so pleased Im holding out . bedtime soon 🙂

well done for weight losses fab news and inspiring !

    Want to wish you luck!

Have read the book or watched the video?

It’s basic calorie restriction. I have stuck with for a while now, at first it was all about the fast days ,but after a few months of doing the fasts successfully , moved to improving my feeds days too.
I love the freedom of choosing my preference of foods. I try now to eat only up to my TDEE of calories on feed days so that I don’t negate the feed days.

Hi Alexp, I was just reading through your thread and I wondered how you were getting on?

I’m 47 and have a looooong history of yo-yo dieting. I too was desperate, having tried WW, SW, hypnotherapy, CBT etc. etc. However, I started this way of eating at the end of January and I have lost 16lbs so far. To say I’m thrilled is an understatement. I don’t count calories on “normal” days, actually to be honest, I don’t really count them on fast days either, I’m just aware of them and stick to my 500 ish. I feel like my whole being is changing. I no longer crave foods like I used to, the rubbish I used to eat no longer satisfies me and just makes me feel bleurgh. But my biggest change is learning not to beat myself up over my weight and eating. I just go with the flow now, I’m in no rush to hit any targets, sh*t happens but tomorrow is another day :o)

Anyway, have you tried a second fast day yet?
