You just aren’t trying if you haven’t injured yourself swimming, Jo. 😊😊 I’ve had one broken toe and several very bruised in separate incidents kicking the bottom, and some nasty bruising of my arms from hitting the end of the pool while doing backstroke. I could teach you how! 😂😂
My hip IS very slowly improving, but I don’t take drugs. Better to keep the body healthy and solve the pain with movement and rest in correct proportions.
I find eating healthy food out is relatively easy. I’m concentrating on no simple carbs at all, at present, and have no trouble getting delicious, healthy salads with no dressing. Tonight I had lean chicken with my salad at a function. I simply remove the unsuitable carbs from the plate before I start. Like lollies, simple carbs are not any good for steady bloodsugars.
Interesting watching everyone else hoeing into the sweet nibblies. I find I’m not craving them at all because I fill up on salad.
I want to hear a more positive approach, Jo! You can beat it!!!
Cheers P
Morning/evening all,
Jo,
I have lost 9lbs since the end of September. It has taken me such a long time to get back on track but I’m finally there and there is no way I am going to give in or allow myself to think that I’ll not reach goal and nor should you.
One of the reasons I haven’t become a vegetarian is the poor quality of choice when eating out although things are improving all the time. When I’m travelling and in remote places there is often little choice if any. The vegetarian on my recent trip spent every almost every restaurant meal eating pasta or risotto as they seem to be the standard vegetarian option for lazy chefs the world over.
The tour leader did better than the lodges and restaurants in cooking special meals for her using items such as Quorn and veggie “sausages” when we had a BBQ, and a couple of times he cooked a meat free meal for all.
Do you really feel so strongly about being a vegan that you are willing to continue to eat bad/boring food? Surely if you ate something healthy and tasty you would feel satisfied and less cheated and maybe compliance with 5:2 would be easier.
We all know that losing weight is a mental activity and if our mindset isn’t right we fail. Don’t give in, think about adapting your diet in order to enjoy eating out and not see it as a trial that leads to disappointment.
Talking of healthy eating, I’ve just had a bacon sarnie with HP sauce and it was F-A-B 😆
I made bread dough yesterday evening and proved it in the fridge overnight. I baked it this morning while I was grouting the tiles in the kitchen which is now finished and looking good.
My neck and shoulders will need a few days to recover from 4 weeks of DIY, but I’m not complaining as I am so pleased with my efforts.
Have a good one everybody 😜
Hi everyone,
Jo,
If it is a condition of membership of your bowls club that you must eat a plate of stodge you would do better leaving and either finding a club that is in the 21st century or finding a new hobby. Have you taken legal advice on the legalities of imposing such a rule, you could ask Citizens Advice.
Your husband could do with being a bit more supportive of your efforts to lose weight, does he realise how important it is to you? Maybe he needs reminding that if he wants to live to see his grandchild grow up he should start leading a healthier lifestyle.
Having said that, if you really want to lose the rest of your excess weight you have to get yourself into the right mindset and stop giving in to outside influences, weakness and comfort eating. I know it’s hard but you’ve gotten this far so you can reach goal if you really want to.
I am fasting 4 days per week, eating sensibly on the 5th day which is usually mid-week and eating a bit too much at the weekends which is the only time I am allowing myself alcohol, bread, cake etc. It is working so far but I know I’ll soon need to be more mindful at weekends in order to continue to lose. I have a mini goal for mid December and am making a plan for Christmas eating in order to limit the damage.
RT,
one slice of bread was spread with HP and the other with real SALTED butter.
I’m having a lovely day today. The sun is shining and it is warm enough not to need anything other than a thick hoodie despite the stiff breeze. I went for a walk in Kew Gardens and arrived as the gated were opening. I had a lovely time as it was very quiet and peaceful.
I held my own personal remembrance service standing on the Sackler crossing looking across the lake, a perfect place to commemorate the sacrifices made by those who gave up their lives for us as it’s where I always go when my spirits need lifting and I’m in search of peace of mind.
As I left the gardens there was a queue of people waiting to enter so my timing was perfect.
A repeat performance of bacon sarnie has been observed and should tide me over until dinner 😉
Being a member at Kew certainly has benefits, Amazon. 😊 I have similar ability to jump queues, and get free drinks, at our wonderful Art Gallery. Priceless fast day diversion.
Jo, I’m concerned that you only eat once a day, every day. The principle of the Fast Diet is to replicate natural famine and feast. Jason Fung talks about the negative effects of everyday calorie restriction compared with the fluctuations of intermittent fasting to get the real benefits of the fast.
Are you eating your one meal at lunch time when you go to bowls? Does this mean you then go to bed hungry?
Have you considered eating 2 leafy veg meals on eat days. You can eat 9 cups of low carb vegetables a day, with a little lean protein like an egg, chicken, turkey or salmon, and feel full. You won’t feel deprived and won’t crave carbs as your stomach is full. If you had a spinach omolette before you went to bowls, you could sit and chat with the other players, sipping water and tea or coffee (no milk or sugar 😉) while they eat their stodgy meals. Just because you pay for the meal, doesn’t mean you have to eat it! See it as the cost of playing.
Then, in the evening, have another meal of masses of non starchy veg and lean protein. You will feel full before you go to bed, and then sleep better. A few glasses of wine, limit to one a day, helps too.😉
Then, when you do proper fasts, twice a week, they will be effective.
Meals do not have to be carb heavy to be enjoyable and tasty! Add nuts, seeds, hummus, chilli, shallots, onion, ginger, garlic, tumeric, lime, lemon, balsamic vinegar, asparagus, beans, endless leafy greens, eggplant, celery, tomato, mushrooms, hard boiled eggs, berries… the list is endless. Pile the plate high with these healthy foods. It takes ages to eat and is remarkably filling.
Keep the food interesting with lots of flavour, texture and varied colour.
Give yourself a total change of habit, again. Set a short term period (6 weeks to Christmas) and stick to it strictly.
You WILL see success if you take control and understand only you can change this!
We are here to support. P
Morning/evening all,
Great advice Purple. Jo also has the option of doing what worked for her before which is basically what I’m doing. You know the saying, if it ain’t broken don’t fix it.
So it’s Monday and I guess for the majority of us it’s a FD.
I always find Monday fasts tricky after 2 non FDs and need to keep myself really busy so it’s off to the garden centre to buy some winter colour and then into the garden for some pruning, weeding and general tidying up.
Have a good one everybody 😜
I’ve just sat down with a glass of water and a large coffee after tidying up my little garden. We’ve had a lot of rain in recent days so it wasn’t much fun digging out a couple of dead shrubs or weeding but worth the effort.
I went to the garden centre and was so early I had to wait 10 minutes until they opened 😆
I bought one new shrub to fill a space and also some little cyclamen and a tray of pansies all in shade of deep pink/red to brighten up the patio until the spring bulbs put in an appearance.
Purple,
I think that for me it’s a psychological thing rather like getting up for work on a Monday after having a weekend off (not that that happened to me very often with my line of work!). Some Mondays I just don’t want to fast but I know if I put it off I’m in for a bad week so I bite the bullet because a successful Monday fast is the best start for my week ahead.
I also bought lots of fresh UK grown veggies and am planning some comforting and tasty dinners starting with a big pot of mixed veg curry so I can stash some in the freezer 😀
Funny, I understand the Monday thing with work, but I always find it easier to fast on Monday after eating too much during the weekend. I am also busy cleaning and ironing. On Thursday I’m out and amongst friends who are wating 😐
I know your garden centre well. I used to go there with my uncle. Enjoy your English veg. 🙂 P
Good morning all,
Great posts from everyone with some funnies (RT), sage advice (PVE) and general chat, including updates on progress from several, including our JoJo.
It was a little more difficult to stay on track than I thought over the weekend, but I still managed a FD on Friday even though I was out at a dinner with about 60 others, I just kept going around socialising with everyone so no-one realised how little I ate 🙂 .
I also was mindful of what and how much I ate over the weekend, again I was able to not be noticed if I didn’t eat much or very little to none of the more wasteful carbs at each shared meal.
Overall I managed to not gain over the weekend which is fantastic, but have to do it all again this weekend. At least now I know where the potential pitfalls are and can avoid them better.
Cheers to all and thank you for the encouragement once again.
AO
Morning/evening all,
Another beautiful blue sky this morning.
My FD went well yesterday. I made a huge pot of veggie and chick pea curry. It yielded 6 x 350 calorie portion so I ate one for dinner, have another in the fridge for tonight and the remainder is in the freezer.
I’m fasting again today.
AO,
You seem to have got off to a good start, well done 🙂
Time to get organised and outside into the sunshine.
Have a good one everybody 😜
Hi everyone,
The weather here is fabulous for mid November. Another glorious sunny day.
I had a very successful shopping trip yesterday and treated myself to lunch. There is a café/restaurant I always go to for coffee and they do really good food but it always seems to be a FD so I sit sipping my coffee surrounded by people eating plates of food that I would like to eat. I decided to have lunch there and postpone my FD until today and I’m glad I did so as I had a very tasty and not too calorific lunch.
I’ve been out again today buying more paint 😆 and buying frames for two small paintings I bought in Cuba 4 years ago that have been sitting in a bag when they should have been adorning the wall.
I bought some scallops for my dinner this evening and I’m going to cook them with garlic, soy, a little chilli and a huge pile of steamed greens for my FD dinner.
Have a good one everybody 😜
Jo, can’t you eat the salad and fruit and leave the potato?
I often have to choose food, when out, that has pastry or bread or potato. I leave the white carbs and eat the rest. It’s usually still plenty of food.
The thing I’ve learnt from the last 5 1/2 years, myself and reading other posts, is that while trying to drop to the desired weight strict adherence, without exceptions, is what reaps the benefits. Even when at goal, the exceptions need to be rare and controlled. Best to learn to enjoy the foods that do you good and learn to dislike the addictive, damaging ones.
Fill yourself up with a healthy meal before bowls so that you aren’t tempted to eat the spud?
You CAN do it. 😊😊P
Wow, so many renovations going on … glad we’re not doing those at the moment (well we’re in a very young 8.5 year old house so don’t expect reno’s just yet, just basic maintenance).
Had a couple of poor choice days this week, so am expecting no loss this week, but no gain either (I hope). It’s so easy to keep fasting in a crowd and as this weekend is basically a report of last weekend it should be okay. I also have another function to help in next Wednesday but at least that’s in Adelaide.
Having cortisone injections, guided under ultrasound, in both wrists next Tuesday morning (literally just made the appointment) … eeek! I have mild carpal tunnel syndrome which is not bad enough for having an operation (thank goodness) but the dead hands are driving me nuts when it happens (sometimes several times per day but usually only once or twice per day) plus the ache/pain and pins and needles.
Have to run for now. Chat later.
AO
Morning/evening all,
I love potatoes and have no intention of every giving them up. I put them in curries, veg chilli, mix them with other root veg to top things like lentil bake, shepherd pie and there is nothing like a good roast spud. Eating them in small amounts as part of a balanced diet is fine IMHO.
I agree regarding the carpal tunnel issues though, the sooner the better as the surgery is easier making the odds of 100% recovery better.
Another FD here and I’m making an old favourite, pasta baked with mozzarella and tomato sauce. These days it is very light on the pasta with lots of veggies added.
Jo,
My DIY isn’t done yet , I’m in the process of making a couple of minor repairs to the outside of the kitchen and bedroom windows which face the same way and have some weather damage. After that I’ve some repair work on the landing to do before painting the living room.
I disagree about needing to eat while working as the easiest FDs I’ve had in the past few weeks have been while doing DIY. I’m guessing your issue is working with others who are stopping to eat and drink.
Have a good one everybody 😜
Hi Fast Trackers and Hello World (You All know Who You ARE) 😉
Airline Announcements:
United Flight Attendant announced, “People, people we’re not picking out furniture here, find a seat and get in it!”

On landing, the stewardess said, “Please be sure to take all of your belongings. . . If you’re going to leave anything, please make sure it’s something we’d like to have.”

“There may be 50 ways to leave your lover, but there are only 4 ways out of this airplane.”
************ ********* ********* *******
An airline pilot wrote that on this particular flight he had hammered his ship into the runway really hard. The airline had a policy which required the first officer to stand at the door while the passengers exited, smile, and give them a “Thanks for flying our airline.” He said that, in light of his bad landing, he had a hard time looking the passengers in the eye, thinking that someone would have a smart comment. Finally, everyone had gotten off except for a little old lady walking with a cane.
She said, “Sir, do you mind if I ask you a question?”
“Why, no, Ma’am,” said the pilot. “What is it?”
The little old lady said, “Did we land, or were we shot down?”

Overheard on an American Airlines flight into Amarillo, Texas on a particularly windy and bumpy day: During the final approach, the Captain was really having to fight it. After an extremely hard landing, the Flight Attendant said, “Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Amarillo …. Please remain in your seats with your seat belts fastened while the Captain taxis what’s left of our airplane to the gate!”

“Your seat cushions can be used for flotation; and, in the event of an emergency water landing, please paddle to shore and take them with our compliments.”

Heard on Southwest Airlines just after a very hard landing in Salt Lake City.
The flight attendant came on the intercom and said, “That was quite a bump, and I know what y’all are thinking. I’m here to tell you it wasn’t the airline’s fault, it wasn’t the pilot’s fault, it wasn’t the flight attendant’s fault, it was the asphalt.”

After a real crusher of a landing in Phoenix, the attendant came on with, “Ladies and Gentlemen, please remain in your seats until Capt. Crash and the Crew have brought the aircraft to a screeching halt against the gate. And, once the tire smoke has cleared and the warning bells are silenced, we’ll open the door and you can pick your way through the wreckage to the terminal.”
************ ********* ********* ********* *
Part of a flight attendant’s arrival announcement: “We’d like to thank you folks for flying with us today. And, the next time you get the insane urge to go blasting through the skies in a pressurized metal tube, we hope you’ll think of US Airways..”

Heard on a Southwest Airline flight: “Ladies and gentlemen, if you wish to smoke, the smoking section on this airplane is on the wing and if you can light ’em, you can smoke ’em.”

A plane was taking off from Kennedy Airport. After it reached a comfortable cruising altitude, the captain made an announcement over the intercom; “Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. Welcome to Flight Number 293, nonstop from New York to Los Angeles. The weather ahead is good and, therefore, we should have a smooth and uneventful flight. Now sit back and relax…. OH, MY GOD!”
Silence followed, and after a few minutes, the captain came back on the intercom and said, “Ladies and Gentlemen, I am so sorry if I scared you earlier. While I was talking to you, the flight attendant accidentally spilled a cup of hot coffee in my lap. You should see the front of my pants!”
A passenger in coach yelled, “That’s nothing. You should see the back of mine!”

A man boarded a plane with six kids. After they got settled in their seats a woman sitting across the aisle from him leaned over to him and asked, “Are all of those kids yours?”
He replied, “No. I work for a condom company. These are customer complaints.”

DON’T YOU WISH YOU COULD THINK
THAT QUICKLY !!!
Have A Happy Weekend All You beautiful Losers 😆
Peace RT
.
What a wonderful assortment of laugh-out-loud Friday chuckles, RT. Thanks for those. Living in Windy Wellington makes the dicey landings an almost daily event for our pilots.
All this talk of redecorating reminds me that I have the front door and entrance waiting…waiting. The can of paint on the stairs must give me the nudge sometime. 🙂 Of course I can plead handicap. A week or so ago my knee became inflamed for no reason that I can think of. This morning (love my Fridays!) I went swimming for the first time in over a year. Not a good idea, the knee is complaining a bit more since, so I won’t hurry back to the pool. But I am pretty stoked at having done my usual 24 laps without effort.
OA, I had a carpal tunnel op on my left hand many years ago, no problems since. I put the cause down to carrying my No.1 son on my left hip until he walked at 21 months – this is the one who is now 6’3″!
Morning/evening all,
Jo,
Well done for making a stand against the ridiculous rules of your bowls club.
Why are you feeling low?
Look at the positives in your life,
You have a roof over your head, a family which is due to increase by one in the New Year, lots of friends, numerous interests and hobbies, regular holidays and fairly good health.
You’ve tried hard this week and lost 2 pounds which is excellent but at the same time set yourself up for disappointment by expecting to lose more when you know that is impossible without giving up eating altogether.
Count your blessings and remind yourself that losing weight isn’t impossible but it takes time and commitment. It’s what I always do when I feel a bit sorry for myself.
YOU CAN DO IT! And we’re all here to support you 😊
Miserable dull looking day today but the weekend forecast says lots of sunshine.
Three FDs nailed this week, now comes the hard part, staying in control on non FDs.
Have a good weekend everybody 😜
Jo, take this slump as a positive. No change happens without a shift.
I had hit the same reality. I had to take control. I knew if I didn’t make a change I would regain the weight lost. Maintenance is not a shiny destination, it is simply a narrow plateau that can very easily be fallen off.
We all have constant temptations, watching others eat food we know would be our downfall. They constantly offer it to us. The temptation is always there. It is not at all easy for any of us who have put the hard work into weightloss, but this wol should not be depressing or oppressive.
The bottom line is, you need to eat foods that you will enjoy, fill you up, are readily available and easy to prepare. You need to plan. Be peoactive so that you are not hungry when faced with temptation.
Fast intermittently not daily. The other days need to be days of joyous, satisfying eating so that you are not feeling hungry or deprived. This CAN be achieved by eating copious quantities of non starchy veg and lean protein. Your desire for simple carbs drops. Your bloodsugars become stable, so you don’t store excess fat.
You must be strict to achieve this, but you don’t have to be hungry or feel miserable. This would not be sustainable.
Consider your food choices carefully. Why did you give up eggs and fish? As long as I’ve known you, these were part of your diet. They are an excellent choice, in moderation. They sustain, they feed your brain and muscles and should be part of a balanced healthy diet. Humans are omnivores. We need a wide range of foods to sustain our avaricious bodies.
You know you need to make a change, again. We all need to regularly. Make sure it is done sensibly and sustainably.
I had a medical shock recently, which served to make me reasses. I re-evaluated and made the change. It has been surprisingly effective. I feel much happier and in control because I made the healthy decision. We are surrounded by exceptionally unhealthy options. Become the person who rises above them. Feel proud of yourself that you know a better way.
You can do it. We all have, and continue to. All the best. P 😊
A wise decision to reintroduce some variety Jo.
With the baby coming, you’ll have plenty of calls on your time 😊😊
The reality, for all of us, Jo, is that if we are above our healthy goal we are eating more than our body needs and storing it as fat. We can blame all sorts of other factors (remember PreciousBooBoo?) but it IS what we put in our mouths that results in our body.
Find a long term sustainable eating habit that works for you and stick with it. If it isn’t working, change it!
You’ll LOVE being a granny!!!! P 😊
Morning/evening all.
Jo,
I’m glad the scales have moved in the right direction again. You can do this. Try to move on from the bowls club and you never know, it might give your back hips and knees a rest.
I was very impressed with Purple’s response to your current issues and as Barata said, salutary for all of us.
Don’t allow outside influences including the eating habits of your nearest and dearest to side track you from what you are doing for your mind and body. I am so fortunate that my best friend is a skinny one who rarely overindulges.
Great idea to eat some eggs and fish as in order to be a healthy vegan you have to be vigilant every single day regarding what you eat as it is so much harder to eat a balanced diet and time and effort is required to make it nutritious and interesting.
It’s a lovely sunny morning here and I’m considering my options. I’ve had a busy week and been out almost every day so I may opt to stay home.
Have a good weekend everybody 😜
It is virtually impossible to get all the vitamins and minerals we need from a vegan diet without resorting to supplements or fortified foods. Some of the B vitamins such as B12 which is readily available in the form of fish, seafood and other non vegan foods can be difficult to obtain elsewhere other than in fortified soy products.
As Purple says, we have evolved as omnivores and any other diet is always going to be difficult and require a huge amount of effort. It is certainly easier here in London to buy food to sustain a vegan/vegetarian diet and there are a number of restaurants that offer fabulous food but the average restaurant/pub still grudgingly offer risotto or pasta and not much else as it appears to be too much effort for the chef to make something other than a slab of meat or fish the main attraction on the plate.
Jo,
I can never understand why people are so negative when someone makes such a dietary change. It is a very unfair and intolerant way to behave.
If one of my friends changed their diet in such a way I would ask why they were doing it which is what my best friend did when I announced my vegetarian Lent experiment.
