  • @iwfama Sometimes it’s hard to find motivation but as you have said the health benefits are important.

Have you thought of the reasons WHY you can’t stay on course? You say you are using ‘any excuse’ – but WHY are you doing this and self sabotaging.

You say yourself ‘it’s not difficult but you have to follow it’ and that’s the truth of it.

You have to do this for yourself – not because someone says you should – but because you genuinely WANT to be slimmer and more healthy. You have to love yourself, first and foremost and to want to do what’s best for yourself.

I’m afraid the only person who can give you the motivation and determination to make this work is you. Keep telling yourself you can do it and you will.

You say you are an emotional eater. Perhaps you could identify the emotions that make you sabotage yourself and learn a different way of dealing with them.

Do you have the support of your family or a close friend who can help and maybe even do 5:2 with you?

There is a load of support on these forums and everyone here is behind you, and we will try to keep you on track as best we can, but the real motivation has to come from within yourself.

I wish there was one piece of advice to give you that would really help but if you are really bound and determined to make it work this time then hang on to that and just go for it!

You CAN do it!!! For YOU!!!

    xx

@iwfama, I have tried this diet 2 times before. 1st because I saw it on an online news source I actually went by what a lot of the commenters had to say and I did a fast of 24 hours without food. Did not work. 2nd time I finally bought the book. It was aruond the holidays- not a good time to start a diet. I am on the third time and it does get easier. Precios Boo Boo, Sylvestra and many others have stated that it does get better and easier and it does.

I am an emomotional eater and a bored eater and a lazy eater (when I eat whatever is fastest.) Hang in there the next day can be a fast day.

Well….I have done 4:3 for the last 3 weeks and it has not made a blind bit of difference to my weight loss. At weigh in this morning I am exactly the same as last week. The good news is, I haven’t gained.

I’ll go back to 5:2 this week and then try 4:3 again in a couple of weeks to see if that will jolt me into losing again.

Ah well *sigh* …off we go on another week. Onwards and downwards…fast and lose…..etc etc.

    x

    Good evening LLOACAs

Oh well back to the grindstone tomorrow and the first fast day of the week as well. I’ve been battling with a head cold all weekend but think I’m over the worst now.

Let’s hope we all have a successful and not too stressful week.

    Linda 🙂

Sylvestra, did you do M/W/F ? And was it any harder on the 3rd day?

Hello All Lovely Ladies Of A Certain Age!

Hello and welcome to all our newest members; iwfama, suefrocks, Billie, Thumbnail and ichezar12.

I am always pleased to hear that this thread really encourages and motivates Lloaca’s to keep on pursuing ‘onwards and downwards’.

I am very pleased to say that I am at just over 11 stone and now cannot wait until the scales SHOUT TEN STONE SOMETHING!!!! Even if it is just 10st 13½lbs!
I cannot remember the last time my weight started with a 10 – it must be a decade ago. How FAB is that? I know how hard I have tried over this period to lose weight or to just stop gaining weight and I have a room pretty full of expensive exercise machines to prove it!

So I still find it hard to believe that I can eat and drink nice meals with wine (at the weekend only); still eat good food during the other non-fast days and ONLY have to restrain and restrict myself on two days only……
It sounds too good to be true when you say it like that!

Off to make dinner – with wine naturally! Cheers to you all
    Onwards and downwards Ladies!

    Hi @applecrisp Yes I did M/W/F – I actually find fasting very easy – I just don’t think about food – so doing 24 hour fasts on 3 days wasn’t a problem.

I have more problems eating enough calories on non fast days. My OH is often away all week on business so I am only feeding myself and sometimes I just can’t be bothered cooking a meal for one (and I don’t use ready meals), so I tend to just have a lunch of home made soup and vegetables or salads for dinner. It’s maybe not eating enough calories this week that has stopped the weight loss so I’ll try to eat a bit more this week.

    xx

Actually Ladies I just noticed the other day, this thread is the most popular of all time!
    LET’S KEEP IT THAT WAY!

How’s that for us? Who says there’s no life in an old bird?

    ONWARDS AND DOWNWARDS LADIES!

After 6 weeks & 1 day I’m finally under my starting weight. “Only” by 0.9kg, but after such a long wait I’m happy 🙂

    Hi:

Great persistence! Maybe some of this info might help: http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/tdee-for-the-curious-or-why-dont-i-lose-weight-faster/

    Good Luck!

@arla 0.9kg is TWO POUNDS!! A 2 lb weight loss is really good. It’s never ‘only’

    xx

Congrats BooBoo and Arla! This is a very, very successful thread AND a lot of fun, to boot!

@sylvestra – That’s why I put it in quotation marks 😉 2 lb in 6 weeks is a low average – but seeing as the scales are finally catching up to my slimmer fingers I’m happy.

@simcoeluv – if you look at my previous posts you’ll find that I’m all over that TDEE and have dealt with the judgemental concept that I must be overeating my whole life. I nearly cried when the first person to say that I hadn’t and had been judged badly for it my specialist 4 years ago – when I was almost 47. I’m an outlier on many bell-curves and this is just another one.

    Hi:

I guess as an ‘outlier’ you would be interested in this: http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/why-are-thin-people-not-fat/

@simcoeluv – It was fascinating and I’ll watch it again any time it’s repeated on TV (have a smallish data allowance for my home computer).

I’ve got both PCOS and a genetic androgen disorder and can step it out for 30 miles a week, eat low GI & enough below TDEE that it should make a difference, and not change the scales. Definitely fitter than most people anticipated 😀 Sadly banned from walking/cycling but lost 15kg just taking medication for the problems. All the people saying ‘well done’ just didn’t get that the only difference was taking 4 tablets a day (2 different meds). It completely blew their firmly held belief in calories in vs calories out

In case there are any new LLOACAs who might be interested….this is our facebook page …come and join the chat. All LLOACAs welcome

    xx

Thanks girls for commenting on my feast! Thankfully I am having a fast today. I don’t usually pig out on feast day… I get full more easily than before, and I don’t feel at all comfortable when I overeat. But fasting makes it all better. I love eating when I am good and hungry. Only a few hours to go to tomorrow morning’s breakfast… 😀

Wow, so many posts on here and I haven’t been notified about any of them! Apparently, if you don’t post for a while, WordPress stops emailing. Thanks @sylvestra for your kind birthday wishes earlier. Being an Aussie, I have to convert all of those stones, pounds and ounces to kilograms, so I see you have lost 22 kg in total (a huge achievement) and that you only have 8.6 kg to go. I have often heard that the last 5-10 kg is the hardest to lose because you are getting so close to your goal weight, so don’t get discouraged about it. I have started my 59th year weighing 83.9 kg (nearly 185 lbs), after a loss on Saturday of 0.8 kg (1.8 lbs). I have 23.9 kg (53 lbs) at least left to go. I may not be able to achieve three weight losses in a row at next Saturday’s weigh-in, after the combined birthday celebrations last night (for mine on Saturday and my daughter-in-law’s today). My husband and I are also going away for a beach break for 4 days after next weekend, so there are more indulgent days ahead. At least there will be lots of beach walking and cliff-climbing involved, so I hope that extra activity will be conducive to a small weight loss. I am going to try a 16:8 fast on Sunday and Friday that week, to fit in with the 4 “feast” days away.

Congrats Precious Boo Boo on your goals and on starting this thread! You are a gracious host and many lovely people are regular commenters. When I have a question people respond quickly.

When I told my sister about this diet, I said some people here in USA don’t like it. In my past I was a dietitian, I mostly worked in retirement homes. Anyhow, it proved to be too stressful for me and I quit. In school at Iowa State University, we were taught fat was bad. The low fat diet was pushed and don’t get me started on the food guide pyramid. No one at that time even really considered the low carb diet. It was bunk. I bought it hook, line and sinker.

I was thin then and young so didn’t really know how hard it was to lose a significant amount of wt. I was naive.

This diet is so unique in that you don’t limit what you can eat except on fast days. There are no “bad” foods. Over time you begin to naturally eat less and your body tells you when it’s hungry. Best of all, it really is a lifestyle. The only catch is how (I know I’m being cynical) can people make money off it. There are no membership fees, classes to go to or special foods to buy.
Even Weight Watchers which is held in high regard here can be quite costly.

We spend millions on wt. loss that doesn’t work. We try green coffee beans and costly supplements like Advocare and Medifast. I wish I had known about this 10 years ago.

    Hi all,

I am 52 years old and this is now week 6 of doing 5:2 for me. So far I have lost 9lbs, so quite happy.
I know this is probably purely co-incidence (bearing in mind my age and the ‘symptoms’ us ladies can get around this time)but since I have been leading this WOL I have been experiencing extremely itchy skin – worst affected are arms, legs, neck, ears(!?). I have read online that this can be a menopausal symptom, but the itch just seems to have been getting worse and worse the longer I have been on this diet. As I say, I am sure it is probably just co-incidence, but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this? I have made an appointment to see the GP but just wanted to ask the question prior to going. Thanks

I think Dr Moseley (who was certainly the man in the UK who started IF ‘craze’)originally set out to scientifically improve his own health and its physical prospects. No one can say he hasn’t made money from the Fast Diet Book and Fast Exercise book and good luck to him!
    He has changed my life.

I agree with Lindyw – I think people like Michel Moseley, Mimi Spencer and all the others who have published Fast Diet and 5:2 books and recipe books will be making a fair amount of money!

I have to say they haven’t made a single penny out of me as I haven’t bought any books or recipe books. I found more than enough information online and from that have found a way that works for me. So it has cost me nothing at all.

Since I started this particular weight loss journey – my most successful ever! I have probably saved quite a lot of money in terms of the amount of food I have bought (or nought bought) doing, at first, calorie restriction and now the 5:2 woe.

It’s an awakening to think how much I have probably spent on ‘slimming foods’ over the years when I didn’t need to. All I had to do was eat less and eat healthy!! I suppose I knew that all the time but was, like so many others, looking for that ‘miracle cure’. Now I’ve found it and it’s so simple.

@wibblywobbly (you’ll have to change that name soon!!!) I’ve never heard of the itching problem. Do let us know what your GP says about it.

    xx

I bought the book and glad I did. Mosely and Mimi Spencer deserve every penny in my book. Dr. Mosely has generously mentioned other people’s books on the subject on this site which I admire. Sometimes I think I am always saying the wrong thing. I feel a bit misunderstood.

@applecrisp I’m sorry if I said something that made you feel like that. I was just responding to the ‘how can people make money from this’ idea.

I admire Michael Mosley and am very grateful to him for making his findings available for all of us. Good luck to him, he was the original 5:2er and if anyone should profit from it then it should be him.

I still stand by my comment that he – and more so those who have ‘jumped on the bandwagon’ and published books/recipe books on the subject are making money from it ….why publish otherwise?

And as I said – no-one has made anything from me – but that’s my choice. I was comparing what I have spent on weight loss in the past with what 5:2 costs me.

    xx

Too sensitive right now. Been cooped up so long-another very cold day. We both are passionate about this diet. It is so simple. I am like a reformed smoker who wants to tell everyone how great I feel. A little over zealous I know. I understand about spending money on various books and products. Right now on my shelf I have 5 diet books. All with a little gimmick- The 3 hour Diet, The Eat Clean Diet and my favorite The Shread Diet (where you shread off the pounds). Sounds painful. Some I have barely even read.

I have an exercise bike at home and I use resistance bands. What do you do for exercise when you can’t go outside? That’s been the hardest part this winter.

Have a good day Slyvestra and everyone else.

    Hello everyone! 🙂

It has been ages since I last posted on this forum, but I have enjoyed reading through all the posts that have happened since. I greatly admire everyone’s determination, especially those with medical and other challenges. And so much good advice from everyone too.

Re exercise, we are lucky in Australia that there aren’t many days when we can’t exercise outside. 🙂 I walk the dogs almost every morning first thing, 45min walk up hills and down dales – sometimes done more vigorously than others! I have just started the MM HIT regime using an exercise bike 3 times a week, plus the 8min daily Joanna Soh strength training, to help me with maintenance and to tone the thinner but bit saggy body!!

The forums have been a wonderful source of info about this WOL – especially in reading about the wide variation in experiences, as well as lots of ideas, tips and support. And I will add my thanks and congratulations to PreciousBooBoo for starting this thread. 😀

Very best wishes to you all as you continue this journey.
    Sassy 🙂

    Hello everyone
I am a 56 year old menopausal lady and I have just started the 5;2 diet.
I dont find it a problem on the fasting days which I do on Mondays and Wednesdays.
I was very surprised to find I was not as hungry as expected.
I tend to eat healthily on non fasting days but do have a big appititie and a sweet tooth.
I have become very tired over the past couple of years and find excersise difficult..maybe being 3 stone overweight dosent help..
In my younger days I was never short of energy..do any of you have any tips on overcoming this problem..

Hi @karenlandy and welcome to these forums.

I know what you mean about being tired and lacking energy but, as you say, being overweight does have something to do with it.

From my own experience and I am 67 years old – a year ago I was more than 4 stones overweight, perpetually tired, hated what I saw in the mirror and really did not like myself very much. I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, impaired glucose tolerance and painful osteoarthritis in my hips and spine.

I decided the only person who could do something about was me. I started off on a low calorie eating plan and began by going to the gym and using the ‘power plate’ for 30 mins twice a week. In three months I had lost 1 stone and my osteoarthritis had improved immensely so I started to use the treadmill for 15 mins at a time. At the 6 month mark I had lost 2 stones, was using the treadmill for 30 mins and walking 3 miles a day outdoors. I also had a medical and my blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose tolerance were all normal and I had stopped taking my painkillers.

I then reached a plateau and stuck for a couple of months – that’s when I found 5:2! I wish I had found it at the beginning! Now 1 year on and 4 months into 5:2, I have lost 3.5 stones (still a ways to go) but I can walk painlessly for miles and have even started a ‘Couch to 5k’ running plan. I am fitter and healthier than I have been for many years. And I LIKE myself!! I like what I see in the mirror. I like wearing smaller clothes.

I only tell you this just to show that it really doesn’t matter what age you are..it’s never too late to make changes. And also to show that this way of eating WORKS!

I’m sure you will have great results here too.

Have you calculated your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) – you can find information on that and on BMR (Basal metabolic Rate) and a calculator in the ‘how?’ link at the top of this page. As you lose weight you recalculate these figures.

The idea is to eat up to 500 calories on your fast days and ABOVE your BMR and UP TO your TDEE on the other days.

There are also some notes, which you might find helpful, here
    http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/some-notes-on-the-fast-diet-for-newbies/

You’ll get loads of help and support on the forums and especially on this thread. we are all in this together.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress

    xx

I’m not visiting this site as often as I used to because there I’m never one to stick at anything for long. A low boredom threshold. However, on dropping in just now I saw sylvestra’s welcome to karenlandy at the top of the ‘recent comments’ list and it blew me away for its welcome, the enthusiasm, committment, and I feel refreshed and enthused. This thread IS GOOD. I’ll be back.

Keep up the clever eating everyone. I’m never going back to fatty-boom-ba again.

I agree with @roba, @sylvestra, you are awesome! Michael Mosley should make you the pin-up girl for the 5:2 way of eating. You have achieved amazing results in the last year with your weight loss, health and fitness – even running and walking for miles at the age of 67. Thank you for your many inspirational and encouraging comments on the forums and the Facebook page.

Not a certain “age”, but a certain “stage” certainly! I had surgical menopause at 35 years old, as I was suspected as having stage 1 ovarian cancer, and the oncologist said it would be safer to “whip it all out”. Thankfully it was just pcos on steroids but could have possibly finished me off without the surgery, so I’m happy to be at that stage at 37.

I have found all my other efforts to lose weight since menopause have been fruitless. Ive not had the energy to exercise daily, or the ability to get rid of my horrible mummy tummy. But the 5:2/4:3 is really helping so far. I always seem to plateau at 13 stone no matter what I do. But I’m 13st 9oz now, so we shall see what happens eh?

Hi, I started this diet a year ago. I’m in my early 40,s and only 5″1. I was stuck for years between 10 -10.5 stone. I had been doing a well known slimming club for along time, and my weight was stuck. Starting and finishing the 5:2, has changed my life. I’m currently 8.10 lbs and no longer obsessed with food.
To be honest, the first few weeks of fasting are hard, it takes along time to stop the grazing we have been told was good for us ie eating little and often.
What worked for me was being very strict. 500 on the nose. Black tea coffee, herbal teas, diet drinks etc. I tend to eat about 11am and then again at 6pm. I also found low carb worked faster and I wasn’t as hungry. Breakfast is usually 50g smoked salmon – 95kl with an egg (80-100) . Dinner was fish or chicken with veg. It’s surprising how delicious cauliflower mash tastes! Celeriac also makes great mash.
10 cal jelly is a life saver! Very filling and hits the sweet craving. If a sandwich is more your thing, Danish bread 55k per slice with a whole packet of ham 100k makes a great lunch. Low cal cheese triangles at 25 each are great for stuffing in a chicken breast and covering with ham. The trick is to get as much bang for your buck! Good luck! I now 5:2 other areas of my life too!

Hello All Lovely Ladies Of A Certain Age!

Hello and Welcome especially to karenlandy, wibblywobbly (love that name), Carm and Andiffin.

Thank you to those who congratulated me on nearly getting below a milestone mark; knowing the rate I lose weight, it could be some time!

Hello karenlandy – Regarding hoping to feel more energetic; it might happen for you as you lose weight and generally feel better about yourself. Then you might feel like doing some/more exercise but it doesn’t follow that you will feel as if you have more energy.
I don’t; I’m managing to lose weight for the first time in a decade but I don’t have any more energy at all and exercising does not give me any more energy.

That is the beauty of this kind of thread; where you can read about all different experiences of Lloaca’s following this wonderful WOL.

Hello wibblywobbly! – I was really suprised to see your post about developing a rash because I am going to the GP today about just that. Mine developed about 2 months ago on the left hand side of my neck; I had just started using a new shampoo and thought it might be this, so I stopped using it. It has however got worse and is now round the other side of my neck and is very itchy indeed. Funnily enough, it also seems as if the muscle underneath the skin is sore too. This forum is littered with people whose skin conditions have cleared up on this WOE and yet here are you and I developing new conditions….
Please let me know what your GP says.

Hello Carm – It must have been horrible for you to have to have your menopause brought forward for medical reasons and at such a young age.
And what you are saying about all your efforts to lose weight since then have been fruitless; is why I started up this specific thread!
There was no point in me asking men or younger women why my weight loss on this WOE was so slow; they aren’t on the same playing field as those of us who are in the menopausal stages.
You haven’t said how long you have been on 5:2 or how much you have lost up to now; but I wish you much luck with it. And you can take lots of encouragement from reading about all the other Lloaca’s who are managing to lose weight for the first time in many a year despite scrambled hormones!

Hello Andiffin – I’m not sure you fit the Loaca criteria but welcome all the same. Thanks for the fast ideas; I like the sound of the cream cheese/chicken/ham meal.

Hello applecrisp – Thank you for your encouragement; it is appreciated.
When we ‘talked’ last time I didn’t mean to imply that your family was did not believe in this WOL, nor that they were not supportive; I was just trying to make a point for you, to not be too concerned about what other people think/believe.

I’m with you though on the fact that Michael Mosley and Mimi Spencer deserve every penny they make from the Fast Diet materials. I saw the original documentary, so technically, could have gotten by without having to buy their book, but I am so pleased I did buy the book because it gave me the scientific rational on how and why we lose weight on this WOE. And even though, I have only read the book once and haven’t needed to look back at it, it was still worth it for me to be reminded of the cutting edge research and development that was included in the documentary.

It was the best £4.00 I have ever spent certainly and people might like to consider, that if MM and MS were not making a living out of their FD materials; then they might not have enough money to spare to fund this website and this fantastic forum which allows all of us to communicate with each other.
The book is well worth purchasing and provided me with all the motivation to get started but this forum has provided me with the ongoing encouragement and motivation when I have struggled along the way.
Honestly, I get tons of motivation just reading other people’s stories.

    Anyways, onwards and downwards Ladies!

@applecrisp – sorry, this thread moves so fast I missed your post. I agree about all the diet books. I have a fair few of those too.

I have a confession!! I noticed that Amazon were selling the Kindle version of Michael Mosley’s book for £2.80! So there it is – I have now spent the princely sum of £2.80 on this way of eating 😀

Hope all is well with you.

    xx

I’ve just been reading back over the recent posts; and I noticed yours of 10.02.14 sylvestra – and I feel I have to put you right. This isn’t the ‘facebook page’ for Lloaca’s – this is the fast diet thread for ‘Ladies of a Certain Age’.

You have elected to set up a FB page for Lloaca’s and in a way that people have to ‘apply to you’ and ask your ‘permission’ to join in.

That is the beauty of the fast diet forum and this thread (though it is directed at Lloaca’s specifically); it’s open to anyone and everyone who wants to ‘participate’.
We have had many Lloaca’s who have ‘followed’ this thread and been encouraged and motivated by our stories and experiences.
Some then choose to join in by posting; others still probably follow the thread but have no wish to get directly involved.

But at least they can do that; it’s their choice.

No Precious Boo Boo – I would like to put you right.

There was, on this thread, a suggestion that LOACAs would like a Facebook page – as the South Hemisphere has – I have not elected to do anything – It is not MY page, I was simply a facilitator for a request.

I am very well aware that THIS is not a Facebook page but no-one is forced to to ‘join’ any Facebook page or anything they don’t want to. IT IS THEIR CHOICE!!

You say people have to be given ‘permission’ by me.

Facebook pages have categories – they are ‘open’ which means anyone at all who comes upon the page can just join whether or not they are doing 5:2 or just want to cause trouble, or they are ‘closed’ which means people ask to join or can be joined by an existing member.

The group was set to ‘closed’ so that ONLY those from these forums would be able to join it. This is to ‘protect’ – for want of a better word – from spammers and the like. The only other option is ‘secret’ and there is no need for that.

People come to these forums because they are doing Fast Diet/5:2 , or have searched the net for it. Anyone and everyone can use Facebook so it made sense to use the ‘closed’ category for the group. It is not my wish that the category requires a request to join. As I said anyone who has already joined the page can add other members, not just me.

If some people wish to have a Facebook page then that is surely their choice.

Is there a reason why they should not have both these forums and a page?

I really don’t understand why you have a problem with this. Perhaps you could explain.

To be quite honest I find the tone of your post out of order and upsetting. I am really very surprised to find this attitude here.
I wasn’t aware that by doing something that others were keen on and which simply adds another dimension would be ‘stepping on your toes’.

Everyone here has a choice – if they use Facebook and want to have a page there, then they are free to do that.

I love having our own Facebook page. Can’t see the problem with it.

I love this thread and the Facebook page. There is plenty room for both.

    Onward & Downward LLOACAs

    Linda 😀

I have to say, when the idea of a Facebook page for this group came up, I worried a little that I would be left in the dust. As one of approximately 6 people on the planet who have not opted in to Facebook, I knew that I would miss out on whatever is being shared there. But, I also didn’t want to rain on anyone’s parade or desire to connect in as many supportive ways as possible. It’s my choice not to be on Facebook, but I certainly understand the appeal that a page there would hold for like-minded LOACAs following the 5:2 WOL. Happily, although I don’t follow the conversation on Facebook, I feel completely in the loop and not at all ‘sidelined.’ Thanks, Sylvestra, for so kindly setting it up for those who voiced a desire to see one created, and thank you, too, for your frequent input on the LOACA string of posts here on this thread. You are always so encouraging and informative, and you obviously put so much time in to your frequent responses to others’ questions and comments. I don’t post frequently (but when I do, they tend to be lengthy!), but I receive via email all the new posts from everyone, and it keeps me motivated and involved day in and day out, even when I’m going through somewhat of a stasis period, as I am now. For a few weeks, my life has not lent itself to the focus or commitment that fasting takes to be really effective, and the scales show it. Instead of getting discouraged by this, all of these posts remind me that this is a long-term proposition and that the payoff truly comes when you ride out these phases of treading water and recommit to a more rigorous adherence when you–and your life–are ready for it, WITHOUT GIVING UP. If you’re not ON a diet, you can’t really get ‘off’ of one, can you? You just resume the 5:2 pattern when it’s time.

So, welcome to all the new LOACAs here like Carm & Andifinn (menopausal or not, we can all sympathize with the hit that our metabolisms take after 40 or so!) and who have found us via Facebook. Every victory, large and small, can be celebrated here, and every obstacle faced down together. Cheers, ladies!

Dearest Precious Boo Boo and Sylvestra

Please don’t fall out over this, remember we are all passionate about the same thing here, and the 2 of you are too valuable to lose!

Like sharATL I was very worried about the facebook page, I am also “facebook resistant” and won’t join it, and I thought this thread would wither and die when a page was set up. But it hasn’t, and seems to e going as well as ever.

Please everyone, keep it up, even if you also follow the facebook page.

    Vicki

Precious Boo Boo, this thread is important to me. I am home alone a lot and I do get lonely. Both you and Sylvestra have given countless posters good advice. This is a place I feel supported and while I have people who are supportive, (who wants to listen to someone go on about their eating).

Before my Mom died it was a little joke that she would go somewhere a wedding or trip and would recount the meals. It was a joke in our family. And of course I would listen intently if we had more time now. But then I would sometimes get short with her.

I enjoy the food stories and the scale stories. They are important to us and that’s what matters. I would love if some of you ladies could come over for coffee or tea and just chat. I know it can’t happen but this is the next best thing.

I agree with L1nda- plenty of room for everyone! I find both thread and FB helpful.
And supportive! (But nobody ‘owns the rights ‘
over either of them! That ‘s as it should be!)
Andifinn- great advice thanks ! I’ve been finding that something along those lines seems to work for me also.

In response to your post sylvestra: I too find the tone of your response out of order and upsetting so you don’t have the monopoly on that.

If you really have a problem with what I’ve written then report my post; I stand by what I posted to you because it is all factual and accurate.
Perhaps you didn’t bother to check your entry of 10.02.14 but I suggest you re-read it and my response to it.
You have on other occasions; took considerable offence at comments from other people that weren’t meant in a personal, negative way. Therefore it suggests to me that you are not perceiving this issue in an objective way.

I don’t actually have a problem with there being a face book page for Lloaca’s; as you say they have a choice whether to join it or not. If you read my post properly; I haven’t questioned that.

What I have a problem with is the fact that for those of us who don’t wish to join FB under any circumstances; we only get the benefit or possibility of viewing one thread. Whilst the FB members get to view both.

I too, clearly like others, wondered whether anybody would still continue to frequent this valuable thread when you started up the FB option; happily Lloaca’s are still posting here (but will that continue because I’ve dared to speak my mind? who knows) but there is no question that there are less than there used to be and not as frequently.

And most importantly in my opinion, the OT chat that used to be a really nice feature of this thread in particular; is now diminished, most likely because those folks are now posting these on your FB page.

One of the aspects of this forum that I really admire; is that every single word that is posted is up there for all to read if they wish. It’s all open and transparent and can be scrutinized if necessary whilst the same cannot be said about a closed face book page.

I’m not going to be answerable to the other Lloaca’s who have commented on this issue; my post was directed to you.

Oh no!! This cannot be happening! This is the best forum ever and both Sylvestra and PreciousBooBoo are integral to its success. We need a council of village elders to sit them down together and facilitate a reconciliation. How do we manage that when we’re thousands of miles apart?

I had a non-fasting day this week like the very hungry caterpillar and am almost back to square one after 6 weeks on 5:2. Thie posts I read here are so important in maintaining motivation, so won’t you please come back. We need you both.

Ladies, please! Lets be supportive of each other! We are all adults here as evidenced by our acronym! It is not healthy to be harboring resentments from last October. Please lets stay positive and not use this forum as a platform for arguing amongst ourselves. Life is too short and high school was WAY too long ago. So lets all be nice and move forward!

    Well said Colleen.
That is a problem with ‘saying’ anything online as the reader cannot hear the intonations in a statement that is written, and sometimes the message comes over wrongly.
We can cope with both this thread – for non facebookers – and the fb page.
This is the most active thread on the forum for a reason – we all love the gentle advise, others experiences and friendship.
We don’t want conflict…….and certainly dont want to chose between two sites!

Utterly ridiculous ! So what if there is a Facebook page. The fact this has even been criticised is really silly, support should be able to be made as easily available as possible not denied because it may effect the numbers of posting made to thread! People clearly still reply to other in need on advice via the thread so it isnt exactly a disaster! A completely un necessary comment to be made in the first place !

On the happy news front–today was weighing day and I have achieved my goal (7kgs gone forever!!!) Started in Aug so feel it has been slow but steady and not ‘easy go easy comeback’.
It has been this thread that has really given me the support, esp through the weeks of plateau. This thread is so spot on–no good for us lovelies to compare ourselves to the ease of youth at losing weight. It may be slower for us but we can do it.
Quite a few people have said to me I look different–Well I have sassy new glasses and a sassy haircut so i guess the whole image had changed along with my energy levels and confidence. Part of that confidence comes from not being afraid of social occasions anymore when I would overeat and then feel like rubbish-last night could only drink half a glass of champagne–now THAT is a worry!!
so i lift my half glass of champers to all you lovely ladies

    Happy Valentine’s Day – all!

double happy, you are the best! You too SharAtl. We all have feelings, and a lot of us are hurting. Boo- we love you. You, too, Sylvestra. No one meant to hurt anyone else’s feelings. Boo- you were gone for a long time. I know the transition was tough…but many of us missed you every day and were happy when you showed back up.

Sylvestra- Facebook will fill in some of the blanks, but now I do worry that I’ll miss something… even if a lot of us asked for our own page. I don’t use Facebook and I don’t want to publish where I’m from. Some of us are much more comfortable posting than others. There is room for all. We’ll be okay.

I’ve been reading Elly Griffiths- eye opening. Thought I was getting away from mythology, but alas, no.

Hello, All–so lovely to hear such supportive things from so many. Anto58, I really laughed at your reference to a non-fast day where you ate like ‘the very hungry caterpillar;’ what a great comparison–I know just how you feel some days! Some of this, a bite of that, three of those…aaargh! Trust me–those weird days of eating get fewer and farther between the longer you’re on the 5:2. It just seems that being so focused a couple of times a week eventually makes your body so much more aware of what it wants/needs that those odd, compulsive binge-y urges truly recede a great deal. And as discouraging as it might feel to be nearly back to square one, just resume your new normal and you’ll be back to where you were–and even lower–sooner than you might guess.

Our loss on this plan tends to be so slow that it takes awhile to mount up to a sizable number, but if you just hang in there, it does finally begin to add up. It took me from September till January to lose 17 lbs., and I was initially so disheartened to pop back up 4 LBS. (!!!) this month after one weekend of Hungry Caterpillar eating & some serious PMS sypmtoms on the peri-menopausal roller coaster; it seemed crazy to lose so much ground so quickly. And it has taken me several weeks of bouncing around in the 141-143 range (after hitting my low of 139) to feel like I am back on track. I realized when I was back at 142 that I was still 14 lbs. lighter than I was when I began this WOL last fall and that is a real and significant loss for me. But yes–if I had lost only 4 lbs. and then put them all back on, it would’ve been very discouraging. In fact, that’s what I have been doing for the last 8 years, come to think of it! Which is why I never get to my long-term goal. But this time is different. I am just going to see it through this stage and continue on. We’ve all been there–or will be, most likely–but the long-term results for those of you who have been doing this for some time are so encouraging and inspiring that I wouldn’t think of giving up now.

So, my goal is to get back to 140 by the time I leave for a much-awaited vacation this Wednesday. I am hoping not to gain more than 2 lbs. by the time I return the following Monday (zero lbs. would be even better, needless to say, but I also want to be realistic, and enjoy some lovely food and oceanside cocktails). I will keep up my daily exercise simply because I love a good workout, and hopefully that will help. When I return, I have a quick trip to Toronto to visit my son, and then back to a normal schedule by March 1st, at which point I am going to renew my 5:2 efforts with more focus and energy. At that point, I know it will take real commitment on my part to make my way onward and downward from 140 over the next few months.

So, dear LOACAs, have a healthy and happy weekend. Think of what wonderful progress we will have to share with each other in a few more months’ time! I figure that those months will come and go no matter what; I may as well see them through on the 5:2 WOE and show up in May down another few pounds, right? It all adds up!
