  • Hi All!

I recently started the 5:2 diet on October 6, 2014, and I LOVE IT! I’m a 33 year woman in NYC, 228lb (16 st 4), 5’8″ and I’m looking to slim down before my wedding in June 2015. Today is my second fast day and [weirdly!] yesterday after celebrating my fiance’s birthday with heavy Thai food and cupcakes, I was *looking forward* to my fast day and feeling light. My goal is 160 lbs (11 st 6).

I’ve been heavy for most of my life, with a handful of 3 month-to year long periods of being a size 8-12 (UK 12-16) and then gaining the weight again. I’ve done almost every diet out there – Atkins (regular and vegetarian versions), Weight Watchers, 3 Day diet, South Beach, Daniel Plan, hypnosis…and I can only stick to them for a few weeks (except WW, which I could do for about 2-3 months). I hate daily restriction because it never ends! And I’m never satisfied! I also hate the guilt that goes from going off plan.

I’m excited about this WOE because I think in addition to the great physiological benefits of modified fasting, I think it will build my mental strength as well. I am feeling like a success already, and can’t wait for the losses to start showing!

I found this diet randomly – I had inadvertently had a feast and (higher calorie) fast day, and liked the pattern, so I did a search for “feast or famine diet” and found a lot on the 5:2 and IF dieting. I don’t think it’s really hit the US – I know Dr. Varady (who did a lot of the research for IF) went on TV, but the craze hasn’t swept here like in the UK. Which is kind of cool, to be ahead of the curve!

    Hi punxylola and welcome:

Here are some tips for those just starting 5:2: http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/the-basics-for-newbies-your-questions-answered/

    Good Luck!

    Thank you!

Welcome Punxylola! You are in my favourite city in the world (after Glasgow of course 🙂

Good luck, everyone on the forums is great & you’ll find lots of advice & support when you need it.

Bonjour Punxylola – welcome and well done in finding the 5:2. I’m one of the LOACA (ladies of a certain age) and have been following this way of eating for 3 months, and have just lost my first stone (another two to go).

Like you, I have tried many diets over the years and the FD definitely suits me – I’m near the end of my 2nd fast day this week and am looking forward to a slice of the Victoria Sponge cake that I baked today, to take to my daughter’s tomorrow. No other way of eating has allowed me to eat a slice of cake, and not feel guilty (so long as I keep within my TDEE, which at the moment is 1780).

Congratulations on your wedding next June – you are sure to reach your goal weight if you stick with the FD. What is so brilliant is that if you find you begin a fast day, and for some reason you cannot stick to it, simply move it to another.

Lucky you living in NYC – I’ve visited once with my daughter and we loved it – I hope to return sometime soon, next time with my grandaughter. I live in Burgundy, France, having moved here 3 years ago to be near my daughter; I’m originally from Yorkshire, in the north of England.

Let us know how you get on,
    a bientot
    Femme
