  • Hi Fellow Fasters,

Well yesterday I started with my 1st day of fasting.
I must say I wasn’t totally prepared (food supply wise) but I managed to get by for the first day. I was,as expected very hungry but managed pretty good for a start. I did notice I got a bit light headed at certain times towards the end of the day.

Today I woke not feeling hungry at all, which really surprised me !
I have eaten sensibly but well so far today and I’m really hoping this will be the diet that finally makes the difference for me.

A little bit about myself, I am in my early 50’s, married with 2 grown up sons and living in Australia.
The reason I have started this diet is that I suffer from chronic pain & see a pain management specialist. I was speaking to him about my situation & how since my trouble started that the weight has been creeping up. I have tried dieting many times over but I just can’t seem to budge anything. I’m limited to what exercise I can do,all I can manage is a walk at moderate speed. My specialist recommended that I give this diet a try & he feels it is the only diet that is sustainable over a long period of time.

    So here I go….. wish me luck 🙂 🙂
I hope we can all be of support and help to each other along the way.
    Thanks for reading 🙂

    Hi Frangipani,
Welcome here! I’m an Aussie too…. late 50’s with a grown up daughter (and a baby granddaughter).
Cheers for your first day of fasting! Isn’t good after a day of being hungry to wake up feeling normal!
I am fairly new too (2 months in), but feeling confident that this is a sustainable way of life and way of eating.
Surely losing some weight will make a good difference to your life. Even if it doesn’t help the pain, it is likely to make everything easier.
Lots of good luck from me! I fasted yesterday too, and my next Fast Day will be Friday.

    Well done Frangipani.

    I started yesterday too 😉

Maybe we should become success buddies ?

Welcome to the forum! Congrats on your first fast day!!!

Thanks Cinque, Typhoon & Ceedub 🙂
I’m on my 2nd fast day today, I have decided to make my permanent fast days Monday & Thursday.

Typhoon absolutely ! hope you are going well so far 😉

Cinque, Thanks & yes it was a good feeling. You are well into it then being a few months. How do you feel this far in?

    Good Luck All ! 🙂

hi everyone tomorrow is my 1st day of fasting and although I’m looking forward to it I am very very hopeful that this is the diet that kicks my tablets weight into touch and I can start to loose some weight. I hope that we can keep in touch and help each other. Thanks guys and wish me luck for tomorrow. xx

hi ceedub have you been doing the 5;2 for long and have you lost weight??

Hi frangipani, my name is karen and I am a 44yr old woman and I live in scotland. The reason that I am replying to you is that I to suffer with chronic Pain and I to have been through the pain management system and have decided that most of my pain is nerve damage and the rest is being tested for arthiritis!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I to am on medication and I am hoping that this 5:2 diet gives my body a shock and decides to loose some weight as I have gained nearly 3 stone with my medication, I hope that we can stay in touch and help each other.

Good morning all, I have had chronic back pain for over 20 years (nursing back!) and was operated on 3 months ago. I am taking meds for continuing nerve pain as the nerves grow back. My weight had blossomed over the years (I’m 64) for one reason or another, and decided to take things into my own hands one afternoon when trying to lift a 25k bag of calf mix (I’m on a beautiful small property) and immediately thought, this is the amount of weight I carry everyday on my back. I have since lost 24k, did it in 6 months, but back was so bad prior to my op, stopped fasting, my heart just wasn’t in it. Since my op the new meds which are renowned for weight gain, now weight gain is really appetite! Learning how to control your eating habits and choices are the keys to prevent this happening 🙂 So back onto fasting and lost the 4k I put back on and now having no side effects from these meds thank to 5:2. So stick with it girls, IT WORKS! I am proof of that, the excess weight you lose will give your body and joints the ease they need. So do it for yourself, not fashion, not vanity, but your overall comfort and well being. I am now 12 months in and 5:2 is my WOL and WOE I hope this helps to give you incentive to keep going. Download My Fitness Pal and count/log your cals EVERY day and stick with your TDEE, your weight will drop off you with this and doing 2 fasts every week. 🙂 CG (AUSSIE DETERMINATION) xxxx

5 weeks I’ve lost almost 10 pounds. 3 pounds this week Kturner

Countrygal I’m on pregablin, tramadol and diazepam when needed. I’ve put on 3st. Today’s my 1st fasting day so I hope it works xx

Ceedub, thanks for the reply x

kturner just hang in there and keep going, when the hungries hit, have a hard boiled egg, they are quite filling, or fill up on some flavoured teas, there are so many available these days, and are lovely as iced teas too, often the hunger you feel is just thirst, so wait, really wait and see if it is hunger you are feeling. Are you bored? Get busy, take your mind of eating especially between well planned meals. I keep a jug of water in the fridge with lemon chunks and sliced cucumber in it, I pour it into a wine glass, (seems to taste and look better) and that starves of any hunger. You will find healthy, low cal, no or low carb ways to suit you. It’s not always easy but mind set helps, full determination and a positive attitude YOU CAN DO THIS 🙂 good luck, it worked for me. I’m on Lyrica for nerve pain with the side effect of weight gain too, but I will not let it beat me, the gain would come from what I put in my mouth, and with 5:2 I’m in control 🙂 CG xx

How did your first fast go kturner?

    Hi All,

My first fast day was actually pretty easy… my second one was yesterday….

I’ve read a lot about IF and in particular found the series of blog posts very interesting. https://intensivedietarymanagement.com/fasting-a-history-part-i/

Basically he states there are numerous factors at work in relation to weight loss, however the main culprit is Insulin Resistance.. this is where fasting really start it’s magic….

Since reading the article I’ve started 18:6 on my NFD, and 24 hour fasts on my fast days.

Countrygal, thanks for the tips on flavoured tea.. I used to drink green tea but not so much anymore

To be honest, I’m very excited, if the “if” works for me.. and i’m confident it should… will keep you all updated.

I finished my first 24 fast Wed 5pm – Thursday 6pm and it was a bit tough..

The other thing I love is Diet Coke, and he basically recommended not drinking low call/zero call flavoured drinks.. So I’m going to try that… It will also do me some good, as I drink far too much….

Ok. I’m brand new at this and wanted a little advice? I’ve made it through week 1, with 2 successful fast days. I have struggled today (Friday’s are tough) at staying within my TDEE, but trying to stay positive. I just wondered whether I am supposed to fast on the same days each week and how everyone manages with social functions? As it was the glass of wine this afternoon that pushed me over my limit. Thanks ☺

You can fast any day it doesn’t have to be certain days so if your having a party or something move your fast day ahead or forward one day.

Typhoon, zero coke was my afternoon “life” saver when I first started, also flavoured mineral water, I found it quite filling with no cals, so just the one glass in the mid to late arvo, would see me through to dinner on fast days. These days I hardley ever need it. Miso soup, in the packet is also very handy, low ccal and warming. Because it’s quite salty, it helps keep your fluid intake a bit easier because it can make you thirsty. Drinking water is very important on fast days. Your biggest incentive is when you start to see the numbers drop on the scales, you become quite addicted to how easy it is and as time passes fast days become part of your life, some Mondays especially after a big week end, you quite look forward to their cleansing feeling 🙂 5:2 is all trial and error in finding what works for you, keeping the mind AND body busy to make the day go faster helps so much but if you can stop obsessing on food your ahead already, get rid of anything in the house which causes you to nibble too 🙂 We all usually eat out of habit, not hunger, so give it time, if you find the evenings hard, go to bed early…….. All the best CG 🙂 xxx

Leeds girl, if you can stay away from white carbs, rice potatoes and pasta, you should find staying within your TDEE a bit easier, and skipping breakfast is a help. Eat as late as possible usually around 1:00 and then make it. A salad with protein, fish or chicken, WEIGHED, until your used to the sizes by sight, after a while you can relax a bit and have them as a sometimes food, but now, I never miss them and rarely have them, good luck 🙂 xx

Hi ceedub, my first day wasn’t to bad. I had a wobble about 10:30 this morning and I felt really really sick but after major sweats it passed and I hv been OK and really stuck with it. Thanks guys for the support XXX???

    Hi Karen,
Thank you & yes it would be wonderful if we could keep in touch & support each other along the way.
Sorry to hear you have pain as well ?
It’s really hard to get the weight off when the body hurts and not to mention the medications that contribute to the weight gain. I take gabapentin along with other medications that boost my weight. I had back surgery and still have neuropathic pain so I know how awful nerve pain can be.
It’s fantastic that you have joined this group too, I’m feeling really positive that this diet will be the one that makes a difference.
How did you go on your first day? Or have you done 2 days by now? I am a few days replying sorry.
Hope all is going well so far ? Good Luck !!!

    Hi Countrygal,
Thank you so much for your encouraging post !!
sorry to hear you have had to have a back op too. I had one 4 years ago, that’s a whole other story but the pain was horrendous prior to surgery. My weight has never been the same since.
Glad to hear you have had success on tis diet ! Fantastic work !!
    Aussie determination for sure ???
Keep at it and Thank you !!!

Frangipani, growing up we heard the “elderly” complain “oh my aching back” never thinking our time will come. Yes the nerve pain post op was excruciating but the meds are now in control and my life is slowly getting a new lease to it. 🙂 you girls are welcome to join us at AUSSIE DETERMINATION, we will guide and support you all the way. We have a great team, some “oldies” like me and newbies so it’s not all experienced, and we do accept honorary Aussies 🙂 and the rest of our team will give you encouragement all the way.. I forget to check other threads, so will not alway be able to help, but soldier on, you all have the right idea, just look in the mirror and give yourself a bloody good talking too! It works 🙂 and you WILL see results, not just on the scales, but your shape changes…..good luck girls 🙂 xxxxx

Hello all,i am a newbie.looking forward to the fasting.any advice?

    Hi Countrygal,
So true, it’s not until you experience pain like that yourself that you understand how bad it can be.
I’m definitely very keen to get the excess kilos off, determined it’s going to work this time !!
Thank you, I will head over to Aussie Determination ???

    Hi Rukky,
Welcome ? I’m very new here myself, only done 2 fasts so far myself. I’m sure we can all help each other along the way. Good Luck !!

Thanks countrygal.. some good hints and tips there.. Thanks

    Rukky,

I’m a newbie too, but found the following to work well for me :-

    – Start slowly, if you eat breakfast skip it… that should immediately increase your fast to about 16 hours per day…..

    – If you need to snack do it before your lunch/dinner (in your eating window)

    – If you are in the mood for some bad carbs/chocolate, eat it as early as possible in your eating window.. Don’t have cholcolate/crisps towards the end of your eating window.

    – Drink lots of water…

    – I found it easier to do my full 24 hour fast on a workday.. the weekend is much harder

    – Keep active, even if it’s just walking more often.

    Hope the above help
