  • Hello,
I have recently started the 5:2 program and have hit a hurdle – the common cold. What do others do during temporary ailments such as a cold. Thanks amandalcr

I haven’t had a cold since i started but the usual rule is feed a cold starve a fever.

I imagine to help get over a cold you need more nutrition so i’d probably not do the fast. Get lots of rest, take a panadol when i want to go to sleep if i’m having trouble or feeling shit. You have got the cold in the first place because you were a bit rundown. But of course that’s not the only way to catch a cold.

I wouldn’t start eating whatever i wanted though. I’d continue to eat nutritiously.

I have found that bed rest is very very helpful for colds and i don’t think people should go to work when they have a bad cold because they just pass it on to everyone and feel crap when they should be trying to get better.

Panadol as pain relief works brilliantly for me for either a sore throat or a stuffy head. For most of the years of my life i never took any medicine at all for colds. All i would do was sniff eucalyptus oil from a bottle. This helped me keep a clear nose for quite usually.

If you get a sore throat, a salt gargle is a good way to nip a cold in the bud. But you should do a few through the day when it first starts before the cold virus really gets its teeth into you.

A common cold is not something I’d worrying about. Just do you’re usual thing, Ask your medical advisor if you’re worried would be my advice. Hope it passes quickly.
