Hi All!
I recently started the 5:2 diet on October 6, 2014, and I LOVE IT! I’m a 33 year woman in NYC, 228lb (16 st 4), 5’8″ and I’m looking to slim down before my wedding in June 2015. Today is my second fast day and [weirdly!] yesterday after celebrating my fiance’s birthday with heavy Thai food and cupcakes, I was *looking forward* to my fast day and feeling light. My goal is 160 lbs (11 st 6).
I’ve been heavy for most of my life, with a handful of 3 month-to year long periods of being a size 8-12 (UK 12-16) and then gaining the weight again. I’ve done almost every diet out there – Atkins (regular and vegetarian versions), Weight Watchers, 3 Day diet, South Beach, Daniel Plan, hypnosis…and I can only stick to them for a few weeks (except WW, which I could do for about 2-3 months). I hate daily restriction because it never ends! And I’m never satisfied! I also hate the guilt that goes from going off plan.
I’m excited about this WOE because I think in addition to the great physiological benefits of modified fasting, I think it will build my mental strength as well. I am feeling like a success already, and can’t wait for the losses to start showing!
I found this diet randomly – I had inadvertently had a feast and (higher calorie) fast day, and liked the pattern, so I did a search for “feast or famine diet” and found a lot on the 5:2 and IF dieting. I don’t think it’s really hit the US – I know Dr. Varady (who did a lot of the research for IF) went on TV, but the craze hasn’t swept here like in the UK. Which is kind of cool, to be ahead of the curve!
