  • Hi all

I’m starting this diet on Monday. I’m really nervous about the fast days especially when I am at work. Sometime my eating habits are relatively good and consist of fruit, salad etc but when I start craving ‘junk’ I have a complete blow out.

I’m just curious as to what people eat during fast days so I can plan what I am going to have.

    Thank u x

Chicko, I have coffee with coconut oil. It keeps me going. I have a cup of instant Miso soup for lunch. And dinner is usually protein and veggies. Since you mention fruit, I’m going to suggest you stick to berries for a while. No bananas — too much sugar.

Keeping low carb will reduce cravings. Drink water!

Thank you for starting this post. I actually started the diet a couple of weeks ago and lost 5 lbs the first week. Then, gained 3 back on vacation. I feel the group support here will help and encourage me to stay with it. I am fasting today and again on Monday. My starting weight is 162. I had a protein shake this am and plan to have an egg with green beans and tomatoes for dinner. Warm tea and lemon water in between. (I also avoid fruit on fast days.).

Will check in again on Monday. Good luck everybody!

Thank u for the advise. I’m going shopping tonight so I will make sure I have plenty of food in to start on Monday.

Just one more quick question…would people start with the fasting on the first day or wait till later in the week x

I started my first fast the day after I read about 5:2. I don’t know if it really matters. I always fast on MOndays and then pick a second day based on my schedule.

    Hello all,

I have just registered and also starting the diet tomorrow. I am planning a real hard core fast, and do the 2:5 ie fast 5 days of the week. Just back from holidays and rather depressed about my weight as have not been able to enjoy the summer holidays having felt awful in bikini. I am going on a romantic week in Italy with my husband at around 6 weeks time and determine to shift a stone by then to be able to really enjoy it this time. Also I have just turned 39 (eeek) this week, and really do not want to turn 40 at current weight! I am weighing at around 136 pounds (I think, I will weigh myself tomorrow morning) at 5ft 3inches, and have been 1.5 stone lighter than that for the best of my life, even after having two kids in short space of time, who are now 13 and 14 yrs of age. I am a University lecturer and clinical researcher, so most of my work involves sedentary activities such as sitting around meetings, classes and computer. However, I mean business so have registered with the gym literally 5 mins walk from my home and also ordered a new bike through “ride to work” scheme, in an attempt to increase my current physical activity levels. I am also planning to use fitbit, and would love to peer up here for motivation and support!

    Best wishes,
    T

Good luck with it. I think you are being a little optimistic with your weight loss target in the time frame given, 14 pounds in 6 weeks. That’s 2.3 pounds per week. At 136 pounds your TDEE is about 1500 cal. A 1/4 of that is 375 cal. If your doing 2:5 then you’ll be running at a deficit of 1125 x 5 = 5625 cal. 9.2 cal per gram of fat, so 5625 / 9.2 = 611 grams or 1.3 pounds per week loss of fat plus a little bit of associated water loss.

Im just trying to be realistic. The diet works, I lost 44 pounds but it took me a year at a loss of about 0.7 pounds per week.

Thank you bigbooty, I understand your concerns and aware of the calculations myself. I have previously done alternate day fasting and lost a stone in actually less than a month – about two years ago. Weight loss is not all about calori calculations and TDEEs as these are mostly guidelines and our metabolisms vary greatly. Fasting works very quickly for me, whereas low calorie/ low carb diets dot work for example. So I will have a go and let you know how I get on. If I only end up losing half a stone in six weeks I won’t be heart broken, as I will still be better off than now. I need a target to aim, and a stone is as good as any other target to aim for me -albeit, a little optimistic I know.

I presume you lost 44 pounds doing the 5:2 rather than 2:5? Did you exercise?

I know TDEE is ballpark but even allowing for +/- 20% you cant really disobey the laws of physics. Yes I did 5:2 and my 2 fast days were water only. I still do 6:1 water fasts every Monday. I ride 50km once a week on Saturday mornings, would love to do more but married life gets in the way. I try and walk 2-3 km during my lunch break at work.

My concern is that doing 2:5 may flip you into energy conservation mode. Also doing exercise while doing 2:5 may be difficult to start with. Took me a month to just adjust to fasting before I felt comfortable and stopped getting headaches. Took a full 6-7 months before I was very comfortable with fasting. I now do water fasting with ease which I put down to the fact that my liver is able to process stored fats quite efficiently. If you are relying on glucose for energy then fasting and exercising may prove challenging. Your liver suddenly cant start producing enough glucose and ketones over night. It takes time.

Don’t get me wrong it works a treat, the time frame may be optimistic though.

    Good luck with it.

Thank you for the advice and the support bigbooty. I have fasted before and actually did not find it a struggle. Maybe because I have grow up fasting a month a year, having born to a muslim family. I find that after the first few days I am actually more energetic when fasting and can exercise better than when I am eating normally. But hey, I will see how I get on and will keep you posted. Speak soon and good night!

PS. When you fast your body goes into ketogenic mode, in which most of the body’s energy supply comes from ketone bodies in the blood, in contrast to a state of glycolysis in which blood glucose provides most of the energy. I will ensure my calories are spent on protein rich foods and no sugar to encourage constant state of ketosis for a steady weight loss. Watch this space.

Well today is the day which I start the 5:2 plan. I have an 85 cal smoothie for breakfast, a 160 cal lunch and then maybe chicken, broccoli and green beans for tea. I’m starting off still having 3 meals on my fast days and will then take it down to 2 then 1 once I get the hang of it.

    Hi Turk,

Yep fully understand the keto side of things. I monitor my BG and ketones regularly.

    Hi chicko,

Good luck with it. Cant say Im a big fan of smoothies or juiced anything but if it works for you all well and good.

I am ready for my fast day. Chicko, like you, I will eat three small meals today.

Good luck Krissy139 and chicko14983! I have started my fast day today and having been up since 7am doing pretty well on just double espresso and some herbal tea. I am working late today and made a 500 cals meal out of zero noodles, prawns and veg for my diner which I plan to have it at work at around 5-6pm ๐Ÿ™‚

Just got my ride to work certificate issued to allow me buy myself a fancy bike too, so feeling super motivated to get some life style changes done..

On the less good note, I weighed myself today and looks like I put on 5 pounds whilst on holiday eeeek so I have much longer to go then I originally planned ๐Ÿ™

Well the first day has gone better than I expected. I thought I would have struggled but it has been quite easy. Just about to tuck into chicken strips, green beans and broccoli for tea. All 500 calories done. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Bon appetite! I have also had my tea and now at the Chill Factore at Trafford Centre buying my bike ๐Ÿ™‚ good times

Sounds good! I’m starting to get a few cravings now but have my trusty water on hand to curb the cravings. Normal day eating tomorrow then another fast on Wednesday

I have not been able to give up my sweeteners in my tea (which I already drink black) and my Pepsi Max, they keep me going!

Would love to join this August group. Currently on vacation but headed home next Tuesday. I was doing 5:2 before my vacation which started 3 weeks ago but did not keep up with it during this time. My eating is out of control so I’m ready to commit again.
Fasting Tuesday and Friday. I’m not sure what my current weight is but the clothes feel tight.
    Anyone wants to buddy out?

Hello Running-mom happy to be your buddy!

I am on my second day of fasting having committed to do 2:5 until 15th September, which means fasting with a single 500 cals meal in the evenings during the week and eating normally at the weekend. So far I am not struggling as I find easy to fast whilst working but struggle at the weekends when with family. I want to lose weight before my romantic break to Italy with my hubby in September as having just got back from hols I feel fat and lethargic… So could do with a buddy for peer support when things get tough ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Running_mom, I’d be happy to buddy up too. I’ve just started my first fast day today. Fingers crossed I get through it, I’ve been really hungry as jetlagged at the moment. Eek!

Hi all, nice to hear so many other people ready to start 5:2. I’ve been encouraged to start the diet by my mum who has done really well on it. Started my first fast day yesterday – found it really tough but felt brilliant when I got on the scales this morning. I have about 2 stone to lose before I order my wedding dress in January:).
Good luck everyone, looking forward to hearing about all your successes.

Hi twinklesam welcome to 5.2 and good luck. Well done with your first fast day!

I completed my 3rd fast day on Monday. Feel great! Will be 5:2 with my fast days on Mondays and Friday’s. If I have a special event or get off track, will add Wednesday. Lost two pounds (I weigh once a week on Tuesdays) and very happy. By the way, I’m in the USA, so I’m posting in the am here in Texas.

Twinklesam: congratulations on your wedding! This plan works and you have a great goal. I’m sure you will be buying a gorgeous wedding dress very soon.

Addmorecloud: I drink lots of hot liquids through out the day to keep me from getting too hungry (coffee, tea, even just warm water with lemon). It seems to help. Then, I go to bed a little early knowing I am still dieting until morning.

Hi everyone. I would love to join this thread! I was following another one but the good people on there have been doing this a while and I am a complete novice!! I have set myself a short term target of a stone by the 5th Sept. Tomorrow is day 7 (I have done 2 fast days in the last week, Thurs and Sun). Not as bad as I thought but I have been a bit hungry today! I have quite a lot to lose so am hoping for 2lbs a week initially, then 1lb a week thereafter!

Hello Krissy! welcome to the group. I have just created a closed/ secret Facebook page for fellow fasters to join as I thought it may be nice to put a face on people to be able to peer up and support one another in this journey. Would anyone like to join? As it is set up as a secret group to ensure privacy of its members it will be by invitation only. So if anybody is interested in joining can you send me your email addresses (which related to your FB profile if you already have one) so I can add you to the group?

I am also planning to use Fitness Pal to log my food intake and exercise if anybody is interested to pal up?

    Thanks,
    Turkelton

Hi, I’m new to 5:2 and at the moment I’m reading all about what to do. I have seen the original programme on this and half-heartedly tried it a few years ago but didn’t really commit at that time. About 6 years ago I lost a lot of weight on a VLCD and managed to keep it off until around 2 years ago when the pounds started creeping back on and I now need to lose at least 2 stones to feel comfortable and get me back in to a healthy zone. I have a holiday in early October that I’d really like to be my focus timeline; I don’t want another trip to go by with me not fully enjoying it because I feel embarrassed about my weight. Enough is enough and it’s time to stop playing at various different diets. I want to change my attitude towards eating, become better informed and along the way find something that fits into my life which becomes a way of life not a temporary fix. I’m fed up of the yo-yo’ing and feeling rubbish both health-wise and with the way I feel I look. I’m not getting any younger (I’m 42) and I want to nail this thing now. Any help and advice would be much appreciated.

    Hi Zoid and welcome:

Here is some information that will help: https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/the-basics-for-newbies-your-questions-answered/

    Good Luck!

    Hi!

This group does sound amazing, I am also just getting started on my fasting diet. Woo Aug. 1st! After having just moved far away I noticed my evenings spent camped in front of the TV have had a huge impact on my waistline…. so heres to a new month! Would also appreciate this support ๐Ÿ™‚
    B.

I just started yesterday and I’m looking forward to getting in shape for a trip to New Zealand next March. I really love the water, but hate the fact that I’m too ashamed to be seen in a swimsuit. I love being active and I need to focus on health metrics. My first day started yesterday (8/1) with a noon to noon fast with a light meal at noon on Monday, a small handful of nuts at night and some cheese nibbled on while preparing an appetizer for an event today. I decided to just do it, despite not being ready with a plan. (It seems like it should be easy to be ready for a fast!)
I can do better on Thursday with a little more planning (steamed veggies and eggs and some greens). As my first fast day is about to end, I’m looking forward to the next reasonable meal.
What I need to work on: Drinking more water. I was hungry yesterday when I shouldn’t have been (1 hour post-meal).
Where other diets have failed was in the lack of support or a diet buddy, so I’m glad to see this forum is so supportive and informative.
Good Luck, everyone. Thank you for taking me along on your journeys.

I am doing pretty well too. Good luck to everyone else. Just got back below 10 stone (140 pounds for any Americans about) again which very encouraging for me.

What seems to work for me is no breakfast – I do have cacao powder with hot water and powdered gelatin – lovely animal bones mmmmmmm (I am a paleo/keto person at heart). Then my main meal around lunch time or mid afternoon – often fish and veg and then if I’m hungry later something like fish and salad.

Science is always right for me too – the old truth that you need the 3500 calorie deficit to lose one pound. Science is a wonderful thing.

Back to bikram yoga tomorrow which always helps and I try to walk an hour a day but work (as I work full time ) does not always allow that.

So nice to see so many people starting their 5:2 journey and those who have experienced it. Glad to have this online support:)

I have not received the invitation yet!

    Hi all,

I am starting on the 5:2 plan today, after waxing and waning about it.
I can manage the fast days when I am not at home but the kids always make me crave crap/processed food.

I am hitting a no processed food diet on the non fasting days and my question is this…. do you run on a non fast day with the average calorie intake for your gender or do you generally adjust it down? I find after fasting I’m never as hungry and find I manage far less, portion wise.

thanks in advance for all your help, I feel I may be needing it.
    Naomi

Hi, please can I be in your gang?

I’ve joined other threads in the past few months that have fizzled out, but I need to “chat” with other like-minded people. All I want to do is drop 10lbs, but I get little support at home. I know 10lbs isn’t a lot but I’m creeping ever closer to menopause and want to be prepared for when it happens and the fat gets harder to shift.

I followed the plan earlier this year with great results, but because I travel a lot it’s taken till now to get back on track. Need to knuckle down a bit as my fast days are beginning to be just eat-a-bit-less-than-normal days.

    Good luck everyone xx
