  • Hello Southern Hemispherites!!

    Good evening all,

Anzac, thank you for the welcome back. That’s so rude that employers don’t bother replying to applicants. It must be very discouraging not knowing one way or the other. I’m hoping you and Mr A. can realise your dream to move north and start treating the lucky Queenslanders to some of your delicious fare even sooner than planned. How nice it will be to leave that stressful banking industry behind.

Quacka, good job on your loss so far. You’ll be all trimmed down for your next trip.

CalifD, lovely that you are back with us again. The fires in California are already having an impact on the cost of fire insurance in Western Australia, if not the whole country. Insurers buy their policies on world markets. Many home owners are uninsured in Australia due to flood or fire risk (past events, world events, or any other excuse) which seems very frightening to me. The area we’re considering is bush fire prone (where my OH has a lot of experience with aerial fire fighting) so it’s not a factor that we can discount lightly. It sounds similar to what GDSA experiences in SA. On the other hand, I don’t feel I can return to living in inner suburbia after experiencing life on a narrow boat. I need a view, plenty of space and a good distance between me and squawkers in their swimming pools. The other factor is the soaring housing costs and whether this is all a big bubble that could burst with changing world economies.

Lindsay, thank you. We haven’t abandoned our watery life, we love it. I suppose it’s a holiday, albeit an expensive one. We’re primarily taking care of business in Perth and exploring alternative storage and/or shipping options. The volume of our ‘stuff’ has been confirmed at 9.7 cubic metres which I’m quite proud of – not bad for three people over thirty years.

It’s also been fun to see friends and visit our old haunts. Yesterday, OH went flying with a friend and then went to visit the plane that he (OH) built himself in California and brought to Australia. The new owner has fitted it with jet engines and OH was keen to see it. Meanwhile, DD and I watched two dolphins swimming in Matilda Bay and then caught a train to Fremantle and went to the long-standing free concert at the Fremantle Arts Centre which featured Peruvian Jazz. Kookaburras are going right off in the trees by our apartment. We saw two large kangaroos on our way back from the hills the other night. So, it’s been a good old Aussie adventure so far.

Lindsay, enjoy your trip to Bali. There are some things cheaper here in Oz. I bought a new MacBook Air $500 cheaper than I could have in the UK. No luxury really – my MacBook Pro was 14 years old! And, although it’s the most expensive passport in the world, I saved $180 on renewing mine within Australia – It came very quickly and has some cool new design features. Quacka, you might have one?

Neil, what a ride – and how young you are! How’s it going with your son’s driving lessons?

Cinque, there seems to be a shortage of eggs in WA. Avian ‘flu someone said. I hope you are managing well and enjoying your family. I thought of you this week because I have a giant pile of clothing for the op shop. It’s fairly decent quality such as a lovely woollen coat but, after ten years of being size 10, I think it’s safe to say that I will not grow back into my size 14 clothing. 59.7kg this morning. FDs are all over the place due to socialising but I’m determined to get in one per week while here.

I feel I’ve missed someone. Turn, are you still here? How’s the tiny home building? Hello to all.

    Afternoon!
Good your knees have improved Dave, how is Denise doing, are her knees, legs & back any better? So hard to lose weight if she’s in pain, it’s miserable…
Hoping to just have one meal today, but looked at my phone first thing & had a stroppy message from Mum, she’s confused about the heater that needs replacing & wants me to cancel it, she did this with the last one 😢 So feel like comfort eating, trying not to! I’m taking her to the woods to see the snowdrops so I might leave her there 😂
Have a good day all xx

    Day 17 – USA/GA – FD

Weigh-in: 237 lbs. Feeling better… cold still lingering but a lot less coughing and runny nose. Got a packed, stressful week at work. I plan a FD today, but have learned that sinus drainage is not your friend on FDs — so just in case I start getting really queasy, I have an emergency snack pack of nuts, seeds, and wheat crackers. I’ll be refilling my water bottle many times today for sure.

    Happy Monday!

    Day 17 NZ FD

    Where has this month gone!!
I’m back from a relaxing long weekend with two friends and Paisley the Scottie at the beach. We had a lovely time – visited old friends who live in a forest, went to the local market and cemetery, walked the river estuaries and beach, had a bike ride, got soaked by rain… I even bought a black satin jacket with overly large sleeves and a big silver zip, halfway between a Bomber and a motorcycle jacket, cropped onto the waist. So groovy with my black flares!!!
The weather was very windy and the sky filled with grey clouds so we didn’t go swimming but moody days on the beach are exhilarating… I cooked dinner on a BBQ – not something I normally do!!!
I relax and always eat a little too well when I’m being social… Hmmm
Am very pleased to be doing a FD today… 😁

@penz Dogs are so much fun at the beach. Do yours swim? Westies and Scotties dip their toes in but when you’re so low to the ground, it doesn’t take much for a wee wave to appear to be a roller!!
    @funshipfreddie Enjoy entertaining your visitor!!
@iona72, @brightonbelle and @excelsior12309 I am in the same boat at the moment, losing the same 2kgs over and over…
Those poor kids in Texas… Why do adults have to be so irresponsibly dumb…
@stitchincarol I hope your break helps with your focus, although perhaps it’s not really a proper break if you’re super busy… Sending 😘
@ccco I’m pleased for you that your house expenses are pre-tariff… You must be getting pretty fit with all that shovelling snow
@penz I agree with @funshipfreddie. It’s managing food rather than loads of exercise that stimulates weight loss… Feeling fit does, however, make you feel good.
    It’s midnight… Bedtime!!

Hope you are having a good day!!

  • Hello Southern Hemispherites!!

Hi all, quick check in as I have to share the computer with hubby now that I’ve lost my work laptop

Still no interviews and barely any responses to the jobs I have applied to. It is truly awful and I read daily about quality, skilled people saying they have been looking for months – if not a year or more. Yikes. I received a job offer from the bank I just left (another area) and once I added in the cost to commute it was not much more than half what they paid me before. I politely declined!! Rude

My weight is up and down, going nowhere really. I must try harder – there are no excuses

Must run, will try a longer post tomorrow

Another Sunday FD accomplished 🎯 I think that was my first & last FD for this week. I’ve got a visitor arriving from NZ tomorrow, so we’ll be eating out every day; probably twice a day. I’ll most likely be doing 4:3 next week to make amends 😳

    @penz – welcome back!

    Day 17, NFD, Aus

I’ve been MIA because we’ve been down on the south coast (New South Wales) for the last few days. It was the first time our younger dog went to the beach! We all had a wonderful time and it seems a little dull to be back home.

I echo @excelsior1209’s comments @lilymartin. Tell us about your new puppy? Is this a working dog for the farm or a companion pet?

Hope those who are battling winter sniffles feel better soon.

And stick with us @stitchincarol! I’m with @funshipfreddie with this one – going solo doesnt work for me but I hope the time out works for you.

  • Fat Busting Brits!!

Good evening, very cold day today. Was glad to be home after the last walk. Bowling tomorrow I must be mad. Had roast beef and Yorkshire pudding took Chloe 4 minutes to eat a big bowl full. Then she fell asleep. No alcohol for 12 days, not as long as you Hemmy. Also not took co-codamol for a week I think. Not been in pain so maybe because I have lost a bit of weight my knees are feeling the benefit.

  • Fat Busting Brits!!

    Afternoon!
Hemmy- poor you doing the brass…I should do my door handles but I really hate that job! Nice to have cake with your neighbour!
Dave- will be hard to get straight into a 24hr fast, maybe do a few days just one meal first? Are you having a roast tonight?
Jean- hope you’re enjoying the cruise?
Yesterday disappeared, we went to a market but didn’t buy anything, saw youngest, saw mum, & just did one meal again, managed 4 days last week. Had snow last night but it was gone this morning. Lazy day today, doing fish for both of us tonight…

I had a great time yesterday at 2 parties, I didn’t end up being the driver but I did very well resisting too much food and only had a couple of drinks. I feel very pleased with myself today!! ☺️ I’m sure many others will be nursing a headache this morning 🥴
We have been out for a walk this morning, 9000 steps before lunch (salad). I feel like I’m heading in the right direction for the second half of the month and there is still scope to move towards the goal.

  • If your clothes are looser but the scales are the same, read on

Me too Iona. I have been bouncing around the same numbers for weeks now. The plan is to skip breakfast this morning, Tuesday and Thursday. Hopefully that will help but I am going out for lunch on Wednesday, so lets just see.

So far I have managed to dodge the bugs at school. Glad that you are feeling better. Enjoy the parties, eat what you like and then get back to fasting afterwards.

Life is short, enjoy the fun things and then rein it in afterwards. Its too cold for salad, I need warm sunny days for that.

I have as an experiment ditched any meals that are ready to prepare. I eat at school which is all freshly prepared and then eat fruit in the evening. Interesting the arthritis in my foot doesn’t hurt anymore. I am quite convinced that there is a link.

Hopefully there will be some much needed sunshine, the gloom is very depressing.

    Day 16 – South Africa 🇿🇦 – FD

@brightonbelle – of course I know Vanessa Williams. Well, not personally of course. Miss America 1984. She has a great voice too. Her biggest hit was probably ‘Save The Best For Last’.

@excelsior12309 – ‘brainworm Bobby’ 🤣 I saw him on TV during his confirmation hearing, but I had to switch it off after about 5 minutes. I know he can’t help it, but that voice is not easy on the ear?! Apparently he has a disease called spasmodic dysphonia 😳

@at – I just saw your updated spreadsheet; not many FDs for you yet this month?! 😅

ccco – I hope your WFD was a success, & that you don’t have too much show to shift ❄

    @northgeorgia – feel better soon! 🤧

I think this is always a great quote to bring to mind, especially on a fast day:-

    USA. Day 15. WFD

FUNSHIPFEEDDIE, I am glad you had a wonderful time out yesterday! I could use a day out right now but instead I am preparing for more snow!!! We will have some later today but on Thursday, we may get up to 15 inches. Spring, where are you?? Also, I agree that Trump has been challenged on many of his executive orders but I am a New Yorker and I am looking what he just did with the mayor there. A lot more pushback is needed. I live in Maryland now and our biggest work force is coming from the Federal government. These firings will be visible to all of us who live here. The tariffs already making an impact here. I am glad I ordered my new iron indoor stair railing bedfore the tariffs.

Excelsior12309, yup and medical and scientific research is in jeapordy. I am glad I had that brai tumor. My Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon also does research and teaches at the medical school, which is typical of Johns Hopkins doctors. Hopefully, Hopkins also gets a lot of private funding. In the meantime, you and I need to stay healthy, so we don’t fall victim to this mess. Hmmm! I wonder what is going to happen to the IRS now that it is tax time???

BrightonBelle, I messed up yesterday’s FD and put on 2 lbs. Today is my retribution. I will fix this. It was my fault! We know that yo yo-ing is not good. We can get off this trend together!👍🏻

    Day 15-No. VA USA-NFD
I am bouncing around with @iona72, maybe we are tossing the same pounds back and forth like those old fashioned “medicine balls” they used to use in school gym classes! I had to take some prednisone for a few days for wheezing, and while it helps the wheezing, it sure helps hang on to fluid and weight!
Oh well, back on the wagon tomorrow!
@stitchincarol, we will miss you while you are “gone”; but don’t be too hard on yourself!
@ccco, you are also witness to the craziness we are experiencing here. Now that “Brainworm Bobby” is in charge of our national health, I am sure we will all feel so much better…OK that slipped out, courtesy of some late night comedian. Only it isn’t so funny to me. There is an outbreak of measles in Texas in one of their most under-immunized communities. Underimmunized by choice. We are going backwards in time, in some ways.
@brightonbelle, the show sounds like it was great. Annoying about the dental crown. I have had that happen.
@lilymartin, I wish you would share more information about your dog! We love pet stories here! The thing I like about animals is they seem to always feel OK about how they look. (unless we dress them up in silly outfits, then sometimes they look embarrassed.). But you never see a dog feel bad that it is short, or squatty, or too thin, or raggedy. They just go on about their canine business!

Well, the weather will be warmer, but rainy here. So off to do household activities. Have a good day, all!

  • Fat Busting Brits!!

Good morning hope you have a great time Jean. A dull day her and cold. Been really cold this last week, hurry up spring and warm sunshine. I’ve not been in the mood for dieting lately, to much going on. I’ll have to do something next week maybe a 24 hour fast😱. Not done any fasting for almost a year so it will be difficult to get back to doing it. So I may do a bit of both,I have lost doing what I’m doing now so we’ll see. My weight loss course ends in April.

The show was fabulous @funshipfreddie the lead was played by Vanessa Williams ( she played the boss in Ugly Betty if you ever saw that ) the cast were fab and the costumes were amazing a real treat for mid week in a very cold grey depressing February

I’m yo-yoing a bit this month , going to try and get back to actually losing weight in the 2nd half of the month which will be challenging as I have a few things on but I think we all know it can be done – it’s not easy just need to dig deep and say no
    Have a good Saturday all

  • Hello Southern Hemispherites!!

Neil, when you mention the umami marinated eggs, it reminds me of pickled eggs, something they used to have in big jars in bars or taverns in the midwest, but that I rarely see on the west coast. I’ve made them at home a few times, just hard boiled eggs marinated in vinegar and occasionally some spices like dill. They lasted a long time in the refrigerator. Eggs have become very expensive because of the avian flu, and sometime in short supply. Your mention of umami flavour reminds me of something more recent as well, not with eggs but with fried crispy chopped garlic and hot chili oil, with sesame, salt or soy, sugar and a few other things mixed in, depending on the brand. My DS read about it on the internet, found it on Amazon, and has become addicted to it. You can put it on any food, but she spreads a bit on sourdough bread. It’s a unique flavour. Have any of you seen it there? It’s so expensive. I’ve been trying to make my own. Chopping and frying the garlic seems like a lot of work because it has to be watched so carefully so it doesn’t burn, but I buy big container of dry minced garlic which it crunchy and holds its own with the chili oil. I’ve gotten pretty close.

G’day, thank goodness the fires are reaching containment. I hope they are completely out soon. The ones we had in Southern California were a long distance away. They’ve had lots of rain this week and now that is causing problems with mudslides where all the vegetation was burned. I can’t even imagine what it will do to fire insurance in the state which is already very high.

I have to get serious about my weight and fasting again. Stress can’t be an excuse because the extra 10 kg is making me feel awful. It’s not only eating more than I need, it’s lack of exercise. I spend hours feeding OH and sitting with him. It seems like I’m busy most of the time, but cooking doing things in one large great room in our house doesn’t involve much walking around. I don’t move enough which means I don’t burn enough calories.

Lindsay, I hope you have a wonderful time in Bali. Such an exotic place to visit! And no need to worry about your comments on this country’s politics. Much of what’s happening is unbelievable. I dread reading the news in the morning.

Cinque, good to read your posts. The high summer heat sounds almost good to me these days. It’s been a very cold January and February. It’s been near or below freezing a lot of the nights. I think I prefer the high temps to the low. It would be nice if was just Spring and Fall all year.

Well, time for sleep. I hope you all are having a good day.

I ordered a cheese burger + salad. But when it arrived the waiter brought me a burger + chips instead. I guess I could’ve complained, but those chips tasted so good! 😂

@stitchincarol – we’ll miss you! But, do what you need to do, & we’ll be here when you get back. Well, I will. I can’t speak for everyone 😅 I tried going it alone for a while, around 5 years ago. It didn’t end well 😕 🤗

Guys, I may or may not check in each day. To begin with, it’s stinking busy in my corner of the world. To make it worse, I’m making no progress in losing weight, and have begun to think I’m using all of you as an excuse: “I posted my plans this morning so I’m clearly doing everything I need to be doing.” So I’m going to remove this 30-minute commitment from my mornings and make an effort to do this solo, making pledges to myself. I’ll be back, and I may even be back daily, but I need some breathing room, LOL, because it’s miserably busy.

    Love you all!

Good afternoon everyone sunny day today. Find it difficult at the moment to concentrate on losing weight.I have lost 1.5 stone since I started at MoreLife, but it’s getting harder. Only two more visits there then it’s all over. Got to decide what to do then. Lots of decorating to do. Every room in the house except the toilet. So hope Chloe dosent get paint all over her.

    Day 14 – USA/GA – NFD

Weigh-in: 237 lbs. I can’t believe I’ve got more respiratory crud again! Coughing and sniffling. A little better this morning after some cough syrup. Maybe it’ll stay that way before my dental cleaning.

    Day 14 ❤ – South Africa 🇿🇦 – NFD 71 kgs

Friday morning PFDS! I’m starting to get the hang of this fasting business, after nearly 11 years 💪 🎯

@ccco – you’re hilarious! 🤣 I promise you – Canada will never become the 51st state. And you won’t be deported. But, if worse comes to worst, Boo Boo says she doesn’t mind sharing her room with you. We’ve got millions of illegal Zimbabweans here already, so one more won’t make a difference 😅

@lilymartin – don’t ‘exercise like crazy’. Read this article from Time Magazine – Why You Shouldn’t Exercise to Lose Weight’. And focus on what you’re eating + FDs. Maybe try using the spreadsheet to plan your FDs?

A few of us are going to ‘Off the Hook for a Valentines Day lunch. Not sure why; we’re all either single or widowed. Any excuse for an outing, I guess

    Happy Fri-yay! 🍹

  • Hello Southern Hemispherites!!

Thanks Neil, I called in at the supermarket after my appt, but they were down to the last few cartons of eggs, and all the super expensive ones. Hopefully I will get lucky next shop.

  • Hello Southern Hemispherites!!

Afternoon Cinque, the eggs can sit in the marinade for a few days in the fridge. I boiled 6 of them and ate a couple a day for the next few days.

  • Hello Southern Hemispherites!!

    Good morning everyone,

Gday, hooray for a contained fire and a nice cool week. Enjoy that fast!
    That Dr Lyon sounds interesting.
(I have just finished this morning’s coffee and wishing I could have it all over again).

Neil, I am not surprised you were exhausted at the end of that ride! Hooray for all the good things you are doing for your health young man 😉
Your new snack sounds really delicious. I plan to try eggs one that way now! Could you boil a few and then keep them in the marinade for a few days til they are all gone?

Thin, wow! You have been busy. Lovely to know you are in the country, even if there are strange changes to get used to. And hooray the storage is less than you feared. That is wonderful.
Say hello to King’s Park from me.

Quacka woot for rocking those fast days! All power to you.
(The weather was terrible for me the last couple of days but I love the forecast for the week ahead.)
Best wishes for managing the work busyness and lots more good fast days.

Anzac, your weather craziness has been on the news here (while Gday’s fire didn’t crack a mention). I am so glad you have the AC when you need it.
Fingers crossed for that job possibility.

Cali, I am so GLAD to hear from you and to know you are reading our posts even if you don’t manage to write. I have just realised the time, so I must stop and prepare for an appt. But sending you a million good wishes until I write again.

Lindsay, have a great time in Bali!

    Cheers all.

  • Hello Southern Hemispherites!!

    Morning all

Gday, well done on the fast so far, keep up the good work. Fingers crossed that the fire is under control now. Talking about muscle building, I was talking with a young German couple at Lawrence when I did my ride and told them I’d ridden 100k to get there. The guy was saying that it’s the best thing you can do for your old age to build up your legs when you’re younger. I agreed and told them that a recent study released over here had shown that if you’re a male over 50 and riding your bike to work every day you lower your chance of cancer by 40% and diabetes by 45%. He said “Well, you’re there already, but much younger.” I was thinking “not that much younger, I’m turning 47 this year.” But I was pretty chuffed, I don’t know how old he thought I was.

Quacka, great work on losing 2.3 kilos, that’s an amazing result, especially as a percentage of your weight.

Lindsay, I really hope you have a great time in Bali

    Have a great weekend everyone.

Day 14 NFD country west Australia 83.3 kgs
We don’t actually celebrate it but for those who do – Happy Valentine’s Day.
Well done North Georgia. Keep up the good work.
@funshipfreddie, good luck with this lizard. Sounds lovely.
Cruella is being very mean despite no grog, no chocolate, fewer carbs and exercising like crazy.
I can’t fit much more exercise into a day at present with walking, weights, work etc !
Off for my first walk of the day with a new dog we have. Certainly uses up a few calories trying to control an excited and excitable puppy !!

  • Hello Southern Hemispherites!!

41 hours into my fast (just water, organic green tea and organic black coffee and daily electrolytes) and all going well. Felt a bit hungry last night at bedtime but a glass of water curbed the hunger.

My daily coffee intake has been creeping up lately so I’ve cut back on coffee this week to just one small stovetop coffee each morning around 9am. When I get up at 5.30am I have a large pot of organic green leaf tea to start the day.

I’m reading a great book at the moment by Dr Gabrielle Lyon called Forever Young about protein intake and building muscle mass as we age. I’ve listened to a lot of her podcasts before which was what got me interested in the book – it’s a good read so far, very informative.

The fire is still burning but is within containment lines so fingers crossed. Last night is the first night in 11 days that we haven’t seen any fire burning on the hilltops. Nice cool weather for the next week, low 30s but variable winds which may make containment difficult.

I had a cheese and onion toastie,I did eat it all but not in a rush to have it again. Chloe had all her food at 11pm. Then whined for chews at 11:45🤪😝.
We had chicken stew for tea Chloe as got a tin of tuna and her kibble, not had it yet she’s next to me on the sofa. Cold today only 2°C now.

    Evening!
Jean- must be a tricky job doing plumbing, when things go wrong, we always feel for our plumber as the houses here are so tricky, all built with American pipework, not UK! Exciting going on your cruise, hope it’s lovely! No, Mum wouldn’t be happy going in a home, she’s not ready for that yet, doesn’t really need carers yet I don’t think, needing a bit more help hopefully…when she’s in her usual routine it’s not so bad, but anything different throws her!
Dave- not used to dogs not eating, so strange!
Hemmy- 🤗hugs for you, lots of happy memories, must’ve been lovely to have that break to look forward to at this time of year…I’ve not heard of hotels doing a timeshare before! My nan & grandad had one in Spain. Enjoy your Crockpot meal, we’ll done keeping off the alcohol!
Nana- hope you’ve had a good day out, did you see your Auntie today? Nice you can help your daughter out with her flat, you must be missing her…
Chilly and grey here again, where is the sun?! Have just had the one meal today, did some fiddly cleaning jobs, like cleaning the uplighter shades. Thrilling day! I was very chuffed with my teeny hoover attachments 😂

    USA. Day 13. OMAD FD

FUNSHIPFREDDIE, I actually understand what Trump is trying to do. We currently have a law that says if I am born here, even if my parents weren’t, he doesn’t want what we used to call, tourist baby births. Pregnant mothers would come here from other countries to have their. babies, so they could claim their babies were born U.S. citizens. 60 Minutes did a piece on that years ago because the Chinese have set up maternity hospitals in California explicitly for that purpose. Those Chinese who utilize these facilities are not poor. They pay quite a bit for this service. Their intent is for their babies to be dual U.S. and Chinese citizens. They opens a lot of doors for their children here both for our education system and job market. Most others are simply looking for a way to claim U.S. citizenship for their children, so that later their children can stand for them to become U.S. citizens when the children are older. That would be an example of birth right citizenship. My father became a citizen when he was a boy, along with his parents. That should automatically make me a citizen. Trump wants to end birthright citizenship and I could get caught in that. I am thinking it won’t but in any case, I should be able to prove my father became a citizen and I am not just a citizen by birthright. This is all very strange to me. I would say I could go to Canada but as Trump has said he wants to make Canada the 51st state, I guess I couldn’t go there, either! LOL I guess I will have to live in the airport like Tom Hanks!!
