Perth, Australia, Day 16, NFD
Just going to scrape in times use for day 16.
Well the last 2 days have seen me fall off the wagon. Yesterday wasn’t too bad, food wise, but alcohol was consumed. It was great to catch up with a close group of ex-work colleagues with whom we always have so much fun together. Last night was no different. It was partially redeemed by a lot of dancing, which was energetic. We danced for about 4 hours with little interruptions as we liked all the songs the DJ played. Haven’t had so much fun at a wedding, ever!
After very little sleep, it was off to uni to finish this dang assignment. I’ve just arrived home (almost midnight) but it is done. Unfortunately I didn’t plan too well and had no food so had to rely on vending machines and a trip to fast food on the way home for sustenance. Thought I would do a FD, but I think the combination of alcohol and stress put paid to that idea.
Feeling horrible and bloated at the moment. I plan on doing a fast day tomorrow though.
Day 16 | NFD | London
Hi Fuvvie and everyone – I’m back!
The meditation retreat was amazing! It was a tough one but feel so much lighter – mind AND body ๐
So the whole 10-days were 6:18 fasting with just 2 meals – breakfast (6.30 am) and lunch (11am).
I felt so much better not eating in the evening.
Got home late afternoon today – only had the 630 am lunch before we left the centre and then lunch on the train back. I’m going to skip dinner and have an early night (back to work tomorrow).
I haven’t weighed my self – will do tomorrow first thing and report. Would be interesting to see the effects.
I’hvent quite had a chance to browse through the posts here. Hope everyone is doing well.
All the best everyone.
USA Hawaii Day 16 NFD
Second Post….forgot to say NFD on earlier post. Packing for trip… Trying to think of low calorie, no carb foods we can buy for meal substitute in our hotel room. Small frig and coffee maker but that’s it. Will pick a container of miso, salad greens and dressing – maybe some protein like turkey slices. Ideas anyone? Do not want to make sandwiches or go overboard with nuts and cheese (which I can easily do!) Good luck to all of us!
Calgary, Canada… Day 16, NFD I think I forgot to sign in yesterday, on vacation and easily distracted to stay off the computer. We have a place in Osoyoos British Columbia, Canada fully stocked with clean healthy food, so I have no excuses, the only thing that might tempt me is we are bottling wine that the local wine store has made for us this week and so \i might want t crack open a bottle and the OH doesn’t drink… and being Scottish..am no wastin it!!…lol
Also we don’t have a scale here so this will be my fist week in months where I haven’t weighed myself every day.. should be interesting…
Day 16|NFD| BUCKS UK
@therealwil78 Well done for hanging in there, I read that you were a getting disheartened in earlier posts… I think?
Thinking positively for the new week ahead, good luck to all the Monday fasters!
Have a good week everyone ๐โค
I’m a bit late finding the challenge, but I’m in anyway. 65 yo retired male from Clarence Town, NSW.
Was 99KG (170cm) in March when I found the 5:2 diet at my barbers.
Had been diagnosed with 3 herniated lumbar discs in 2010.
A Neurosurgeon had programmed a major operation when the inflammation subsided sufficiently, so I decided to try the 5:2.
Lost 13 kg between mid April and end of August and found that I could do physical things that were previously impossible.
I’m finding fast days quite easy, probably because I can/do delay breakfast to between 10 and 11 am, then no lunch and dinner at 6/7pm.
So effectively I am achieving 16:8 (hours) without realising it.
The really good news is that last Wednesday my surgeon told me that I no longer need an operation!!
Yahoo!
Am now down to 80KG and have not lost the drive to reach 75kg.
I must add I’ve also been doing 3 x 1/2 hour sessions a week of Hydrotherapy in a heated pool, prescribed by my Physio, concentrating on my back and core strength.
Between the weight loss and Hydrotherapy my other half says I look and act “like a new man”.
Have more to add but will revisit later today – off to Hydrotherapy now, can’t wait.
5:2 plus exercise is the way to go to achieve weight loss.
Day 16 E. Canada NFD
Well, today was gorgeous so I went for a 24 km bike ride.
I weighed myself today to see what happened following my little holiday last night.
Results: at time t = 09:00 134.5 pounds. t = 17:00 132.5 pounds. t = 17:30 131.5 pounds.
I feel like I’m at the circus at a ‘guess your weight’ stall. I’m taking the average at 133 and hope that is more or less correct.
Forgive me everyone while I think out loud and try to add up the calories I ate today. The following are estimates that I hope are reasonably accurate.
Bran flakes 2/3 cup with milk – 180 calories.
The panini came from a cafe, with spouse eating half. I doubt the bread is the equivalent of a normal slice, it looks a lot denser and may have been lightly buttered to make it crisper, so I’m calling my half of it 150 calories. The cheese I’m calling 100 calories, the bit of cranberry 25 at worst, and the turkey quite light so maybe 50. That’s 325 calories. So far we’re up to just over 500 cals for the day.
But I also had a cafe latte, about 140 calories. I don’t sweat it over foamed milk, it’s filling and nourishing and enjoyable and a source of both protein and calcium. We’re at 640 cals for the day.
Hokay, back from the bike ride. I split a large Americano coffee which has about 1 T of cream in it (50 for my 1/2 share) and some milk (20) and split a choc chunk cookie (90 for my share) with spouse, so that’s 160 cals. Subtotal 800 cals.
Back home I decide I don’t need much for supper. I have 15 cherry tomatoes and about 1/2 cup of 1 per cent cottage cheese, for about 150 cals. Subtotal 950, oh, and I snitched 1/8 of spouse’s bagel this morning, close to 50 so that’s 1000 cals, or about 2/3 of my TDEE.
But, but, – and here’s the value of writing this out – I notice that I didn’t eat much in the way of fruits or veg today. Not at breakfast; not at lunch, since the cafe we went to pre and post bike ride doesn’t offer much in the way of those things. And I don’t have much in the house other than tomatoes, since I ate all of the salad in the house yesterday for lunch.
I need to start packing small containers of baby carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, etc. for snack food to bring up my veggie quota on days when I’m not around home much.
Thanks for letting me ‘think out loud.’
Day 16: Pacific NW USA, NFD, out to brunch today and I’m sure the kale/tomato Benedict w/o muffin but with Hollandaise and a Cappuccino was plenty high cal but still within LCHF. Only tea since then so will try to figure it out on MFP so I know my allowance for dinner to stay under TDEE.
Yesterday ended up a little less planned. I woke with some old recurring symptoms but weighed in after the previous day’s FD and was very pleased with result. I made us a Hangtown Fry for breakfast. Then while on a walk developed full blown symptoms and had to wait in a coffee shop while OH went to find Advil. Felt so odd to remember what I used to live with on a daily basis. Food wise the rest of the day was also a relapse to old habit of trying to abate pain with continual snacking. Sort of the same as Holly and Lael said about eating a full meal but after still feel like eating. I did also end the work week trying to work out the way to not feel victimized is to not let myself be a victim. So emotions or pain or which came first, the result was more food went in than necessary. Luckily we’ve become quite fastidious about what food we keep in the house and so I couldn’t do too much damage but I’m sure I still went over TDEE with almond butter on celery, baby bok choy and hummus and strawberries and cream fraische. Today is a new day!
Moth – the visual of you with your food halo back on produced a big smile for me!
Janey – sending you visions of rejuvenation and health!
Time4me – all is never lost because you can get up, brush yourself off and get back on the horse!
SongBird – depends on how much you eat during the 8 hours of a 16:8 whether it’s a FD or a NFD, right?
Therealwil – congrats on that win at the scales!
Emmsee – welcome to our forum. As you can see Fuvvie will check you in on a daily basis. Start your post with the the day of the month, your location and FD or NFD and anything else you want to add.
Going for our second walk of the day. 3 miles so far and going for another 3. Gotta love the weekend!
Australia Day 17 FD
Still a kilo over my lowest weight from last month and really feeling motivated this week. Am planning to fast Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Planning a water fast today. Also goals for the week are on nfd’s no snacking after dinner, and to have plenty of water this week. Have been keeping up with my exercise plan and feeling great from that. Really hoping to get down that pesky kg this week and then hopefully lower by the end of the month.
Good luck everyone and especially those fasting today.
USA Day 15 and 16, NFDs
Home from my niece’s wedding. It was very nice. I’m grateful to have spent time with siblings and many nieces and nephews and their families. It had been a long time since we had all been together. I stayed moderate in my eating, but I didn’t fast or deny myself any particular food. I spoke about this 5:2 fasting way of life to a sister, who is challenged with obesity. She says she will look into Dr. Mosely’s documentary. I really hope so. I also told her how supportive, educational and encouraging this forum is. I gave her the names of others who have been doing research in this field of IF, including Dr. Krista Varaday, Dr. Jason Fung, and Dr. Valter Longo, to name a few.
It will take a couple of weeks to make up for my calorie intake over the last week, I think. I feel it was well worth it in order to participate in and enjoy such a special occasion. It’s the flexibility that I love about this way of eating, this lifestyle.
Best to everyone.
Day 16| NFD| Toronto
Back in town after a WiFi free, but calorie dense, retreat. Sigh…tomorrow is another day.
@emmsee: Welcome, your progress is encouraging especially as my drive falters; congratulations on the no operation news.
Tweed Coast Australia / Day 17 / NFD
Went on a 34 kilometer bicycle ride on the Tweed Coast Road bike path and I had a glorious time! Only thing is that I’m always so much more hungry after exercising so I really do know what Dr. M. means when he says that exercising isn’t a way to lose weight!
Anyway, at least I’m making healthy choices!
Day 16 NFD Portugal. Disaster towards end of the day in terms of food. Felt horrible. It wasn’t worth it! Lesson learned…I hope. Weight 67.4
Day 17 FD Refocussed, will not torment myself by weighing in this morning. Will leave it til tomorrow. About to do some upper body exercise. Weather has turned wet…not great for walking.
Have a great week everyone.
NZ, Day 17, FD
Woke up feeling awful this morning – food hangover. Really disappointed to revert back to old eating patterns – know it was all emotional eating, just need to learn to control it.
Have managed to do water only FD today to break over-eating cycle & am sure I’ll feel much better in morning! Normally I’d keep over-eating all week & then start again next “Monday”!
Did 45min walk tonight with girls which was nice. Off to bed early now to help avoid kitchen & any opportunity to undo fast benefits!!
Take care all – positive thoughts & vibes to you all. Xxx
Perth, Australia, Day 17,FD
Putting the weekend behind me, so far so good today.
Congratulations to emmsee on your success on the program. I hope to emulate it ๐
On way home from work. When I get there I’ll go for a walk. In lieu of eating lunch, I went for a walk at work today with a colleague. She’d already eaten. I also walked up the hill to the next bus stop as I had a few minutes to wait for the bus. Everything helps and it is a small measure to counteract sitting on my butt all day.
Happy fasting!
Day 17 Cornwall UK.
Fast day today, the sun is shinning and I’m feeling positive! Start of a new week. All very best to those on FD Monday!
Emmsee welcome to this thread, you have done really well. Congatulations not having to have the op, something to be avoided if at all possible! You are in control – such a great feeling.
moth54- I always have my box of prepared veg wherever I go, even on nfds.I do find it just helps me to stay on track! Even been known to munch on a mini cucumber in a cafe while others are eating cake!!
I had a good weekend lots of gardening and some good long โwellyโ walks, along the bridle ways kicking up autumn leaves and sloshing though puddles, love this time of year!! Very windy here so we didn’t get out on the bikes.
Have a good everyone, onwards and DOWN!!
Gozo, Malta
Day 17
FD
Today is a fast day.
I had a cappuccino with my daughters. So it’s likely to end on 550 calories. Chicken with mustard and yogurt and mixed veg for lunch and it will be fish with salad for supper.
Babysitting my grand daughters today. Then will go to a Eucharistic meeting I attend every Monday.
I may go for a short walk with daughter no 1.
Have a great Monday everyone. Onwards and downwards.
Day 17 ++ NFD NSW, Australia.
Walked 9.4 Km today (burned 812 Cals according to my app)
Sure great to be back walking again after 11 months hiatus.
I use Evernote to store/ record recipes suitable for Fast Days (<300 Cals, Higher Protein, No sugar, Stacks of Vegetables). In the past 2 days I’ve added 71 new dinner recipes to my FD file.
This is the secret, in my opinion, of handling FD’s – plenty of choice for low cal dinners. I’ll add several to the Southern Hemispherites forum (https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/hello-southern-hemispherites/)
Good Luck everyone
emmsee
PS – What do you call a person who is happy on Mondays:
Retired!
Day 17 NJUSA FD Bit of tough day yesterday – found a bag of chocolate chips that just kept calling my name -nibbled on and off all day- was also great sprinkled over ice cream last night. Woke up with a miserable headache this morning from all that sugar. FD today hopefully can undo of yesterday’s nibbliing!
Stay strong Monday .
Day 17 USA (Illinois) NFD
Probably ate over TDEE yesterday, but did get in a good 15 minute power walk last evening while the Cubs were getting shut-out by LA Dodgers. Ugh.
Busy day planned today. P.E.O. meeting mid-day, stop at the gym, then choral rehearsal this evening.
Fuvvie – you are doing marvelous work for us on your spreadsheet. Thank you so much! Yes, singing does count as great aerobic activity in my book.
emmsee — yes, it is Monday, and I am also retired, but I sure am busy! Congrats on your staving off back surgery. Our 42 y.o. son had a herniated disc repaired in the spring but has not fully recovered from that. He could stand to lose weight too, though. Maybe I will tell him about your success.
Good Morning All, USA, Missouri Ozarks, Day 17, Fasting !
Yay, glad to be back to fasting. I felt like I ate too much over the weekend but it was really that I ate too “often”. Glad to be back in control. I really should fast 16:8 everyday, maybe I will.
Got in almost all of my exercise yesterday, about 3/4s – felt really tired in the afternoon so I laid on the couch and watched 48 Hours murder mysteries for a couple of hours. Ironic that I was tired on the days I am eating more – energized on the days that I am not.
Have a wonderful day everybody, am so enjoying reading all of your posts from around the globe.
Day 17 | Ohio, USA | FD
Weight: 129.6 (58.8 kg) And on my new heavier scale!
This is first real drop I’ve seen. Today’s my FD — my last FD was Thursday. This is exiting.
@fuvvie thanks again for managing this month! What about uploading it to google drive? You can set the sharing to be “anyone with the link” and then share the link here?
Hi UK day 17 low day
I think the problem with my weekends is they lack the structure of my week days which lead to snacks -whereas my weekdays I very rarely now have snacks in between. I also enter the ‘its the weekend’ mentality which allows for little treats which are not so little on the calorie front.
Welcome Emmsee
It’s amazing how we let the numbers on the scale effect us – take Norrieb for instance because she thought there was no change it immediately effected her mindset – yet if she had read correctly the weekend may have been so different with a more positive outlook. Yet NorrieB is not the only one by far, for a number on the scale to effect our mindset.
Not sure if the following story is actually true but it has been repeated a lot.
A man accidentally locked himself inside a refrigerated box car. Try as he did, he couldn’t get out. He recorded his progress by writing on the side of the car. The first entry indicated he was slowly getting colder and colder. He said there was nothing to do but wait. He probably banged on the side of the car and yelled for someone to help him, but there was no one nearby to hear. Finally, he wrote, “I’m slowing freezing to death. These may be my last words.” They were.
The next day the man was found dead there on the floor of the box car. He had died, but not because he froze to death, but because he believed he had. He knew he was in a refrigerated car and knew that it would have subfreezing temperatures–that is under normal circumstances, but the refrigeration unit was out of order. The temperature in the car was actually 57 degrees Fahrenheit, and there was plenty of air. The man died of his own self-created illusion.
or the story about the weight lifter –
One of he most amazing and encouraging stories of all concerns the Russian weight lifter Vasily Alexeyev. Before the mid 1970’s no human being had ever lifted 500 pounds overhead. The Russian held the world record, but he was never able to break the 500 pound barrier–though he had tried several times. For one important competition, his trainers told him that he would be lifing a weight he had lifted before-499.9 pounds. He did it and then discovered that his trainers had deceived him about the weight–he had actually I lifted 500 1/2 pounds–a new world’s record!
What his trainers did was purposely tell him to do something he already knew he could do. they had erased a limitation that had been embedded not only in his mind but also in the mind of all other weight lifters, and the 500 pound barrier was broken forever. Soon other weight lifters were lifting more than 500 pounds also. In fact, once the 500 pound limitation was removed from his mind, Vasily went on to lift more than 560 pounds overhead.
Before the 4 minute mile was achieved no one thought it possible yet once one proved it could be done others followed soon after – why because they now believed that it could be done.
We really need to get to grips with our mindset over the number on the scale – acknowledge what it says and move on. It is only an indication and does not define us and certainly should not dictate as to whether we have a good day or bad day.
A few years ago I had, what seemed like a good idea at the time, for me, my OH and my two younger sons to climb a nearby mountain. We don’t have really big mountains in NI and it didn’t seem too high until off course we started to go up. We made it, eventually, but it took us hours. What kept me going however as I was going up, was looking back to see how far I had come (any excuse for a stop to get my breath). I knew that the further I had come meant I was closer to the top. We were rewarded with the most breathtaking view and going down was so much easier but I was never so glad to get back to the car lol.
We should focus more on how far we have come rather than a number which may or not be completely accurate anyway.
Have a good week everyone x
London | Day 17 | NFD
A good day ๐ – My scales recorded a weight of 66.7 kg this morning.
A 1 kg loss in 2 weeks (including the 10-day meditation retreat, which was essentially 6:18 fasting).
Having gotten used to eating at 630am, I was pretty hungry by the time I got to work this morning at 830. So breakfast was egg and bacon muffin with a coffee (semi-sk milk).
Lunch was a small apple + tea with skimmed milk.
Dinner planned with a friend tonight. Hoping to keep it light.
Tomorrow is an FD. Would like to aim high and do a 36-h fast, but let’s see how things pan out tomorrow.
In terms of exercise, I haven’t done any over the last 14 days. Will be getting back to my yoga, trx, running, and cycling routine this week.
Good luck all
DAY 17. Wisconsin, USA.
FD. I think my body is back to where it was prior to my September lapse. I am in the lower range of my normal again. I really try to not step on the scale every day any more. I do best with a couple of times a week, or less. If I NEVER step on the scale, I miss the accountability. I high number can be quite motivating. If I step on scale every day, I find my mood (and sometimes self worth) reflects the number I see. I don’t want the scale to have that kind of control over my day.
Listened to Dr. Fung this weekend. His science based lectures are more motivating to me than anything else. Thankful for him and Dr. Mosely and others.
Have a GREAT week, everyone!
Day 17, Brussels, FD
Scale showed some higher numbers today than Friday, but spent a lovely weekend in France with friends and enjoyed food, cheese and wine so I’m not surprised and i’m not beating myself up for it. After all it’s important to enjoy life once in a while also, and learn a good balance between healthy and special occasion treats! This week I have the goal to get back to the same number as I had Friday and any loss other than that will be just a plus. I’m pretty good on track with reaching my goal for the month with just a bit more than 1 kg to go (not taking into consideration what I gained over the weekend).
Good luck all of you
xx
Oh, forgot to write, that I enjoyed your post, Coda. Thank you for the stories. ๐
One time I accidentally grabbed hot iron and have nasty burn on my hand. To my surprise, the iron actually was cold, but I believed that it was hot, and got burned. Even though that now I knew that the iron was cold, there was no way back. My burn was real, and hurtful. It took several days to heal, and several months I had a scar.
Amazing how our minds work.
