Carol, I now keep the cheap jewellery in the obvious jewellery hanger and have a key on it to make it look worth stealing, and the expensive stuff I wear and keep in random bags. I also upped the insurance. ๐๐P

That’s sort of what I do too Purple. I keep the cheaper, unsentimental stuff laying around hoping thieves will think that’s all there is. The key is a good idea though makes them think it’s something worth stealing. Do you leave the key in or hide it?
With our insurance I have to have every item valued which gets expensive especially as you’re meant to update values regularly. I think we also have to pay extra if I want a specific item insured.
My parents house was burglarized and that was bad. My sister’s house was broken into, with jewelry taken. Now she has to keep everything of value in a safe deposit box at the bank — even the silverware! We finally got a home security system, which we deploy when we go away.
Let us know any tips you son has, Carolann.
We will Fast tomorrow instead of Thursday, since that will be Thanksgiving Day. All the pies are made and the turkey is ready to be stuffed. I turn 1/2 a turkey into a roulade, with the stuffing inside. Easy to bake, easy to slice, and perfect for the 3 adults who will be at the table.
Your good yoga workout and low calories must have paid off for you, AT. You must have lost weight with that.
I like that idea of a turkey roulade, fasting-me. It would be a good idea for r our Christmas as there are just three eating meat, although I’m not sure if daughter will be. She’s been diagnosed with a thyroid problem and is experimenting with veganism.
I seem to got myself back in order, as realised that onset of cold weather was leading me to avoid drinking water. Back to that and no transit problems. Comfort food is harder to resist in the winter, though.
Well, Polly, as Ned Stark would say, “Winter is Coming.” Tomorrow morning the temperature here should be 20 F. [-6 C] and our bodies want to hunker down. Does your daughter think that veganism will cure her thyroid disorder? probably not. I too have noticed that I’m not inclined to drink the water that I used to — tnx for reminding me!
Yeah, the turkey roulade works very well: 1 breast [minus the tenderloin], butterflied if necessary, plus one thigh = about 3-4 pounds meat + 3 cups stuffing rolled and tied. Works like a charm.
Purple, I leave a note on the counter which details ‘things to do’ before we go away. One of the bullet points is ‘valuables to safe storage’ which could mean safe deposit box or hidden in the house. My mother told my sister not to keep valuables in a jewelry box, as that just shows where to look. And then my sister was robbed and the jewelry box was right there! Mine contains only costume jewelry.
Fasting today: Tomato-curry ScrOmelette this morning, seafood chowder for dinner. tomorrow is the Feast.
Thanks for your good wishes, Pollypen. We had a wonderful feast — all 3 of us working on different parts of the meal and it tasted delicious. All 12000 calories of it! just kidding, but I feel fat right now. Tomorrow the scales will reveal the damage… Your daughter sounds like a ‘Quester’ who is always trying new things. hope she will get the thyroid worked out.
Tomorrow we will eat pie for breakfast, since we are from New England, and go tag our Christmas tree. Then we’ll press some apples for cider and eat trout with hazelnuts for dinner. No lunch! No snacks!
Morning, all. I seem to back to good management. Drinking lots of water. Yesterday, I asked for chips instead of potato salad with my light lunch at poetry. However, that was the only meal I had all day, with just a yoghurt, satsuma, small apple and some cashews later. Scales show 2 &3/4lb down this morning, so safely in wriggle room.
Barata, I’ll be indulging in some wine tomorrow while I watch the game. Wales can always dream!
Fasting- me, you sound like pioneers with your tree-tagging and cider pressings!
We went to a party yesterday with no weight damage. I’ve managed to creep back into my wriggle room by keeping a food diary over the past fortnight (thanks for the suggestion Carol)
I’m not counting calories, but recording food consumed and times. It is keeping me vigilant.
I’m basically skipping breakfast every day, eating very few white carbs but loads of leafy greens and about 100gm protein per meal. I have a glass of wine 2 x 5 days a week and a “dessert” of plain yoghurt, blueberries and nuts 5 times a week. I’m doing total fasting for 24 hours twice a week, with 50gm fish, salad and a little yoghurt and berries in the evening. I’m being a lot more random about when I eat my 2 (one small, one smaller) meals per day and allow myself 1/2 glass kefir once or twice a day on eat days. I only eat when hungry.
My pattern seems to be eat at 11:30-12:30 and again at 6:30-7pm, but I am totally flexible. Mr P just gets fed when I’m hungry ๐๐ I’m not strict re snacking, but simply rarely feel the need. If I do, I have a handful of salted nuts.
I might add, the weather is superb here at present. ..in the low 20s with cool breezes in the evening. Definitely easier to eat less. โบโบ P
Congratulations M&M! Be careful, though. I think some complacency has crept in with me and Iโve been at the top of my wriggle room a few times since my anniversary, today Iโm st the top again!
OH made an experimental soup for lunch, which was horrible, so I had a marmite sandwich to take the taste away. As the match started at 5.15 eating was awkward so we ended up having a sandwich at half time ( Brie and onion chutney for me).
What a good rugby afternoon, though. Scotland were amazing against Australia. We made the running fir most of our game, but we cud never break through All Black defence.
Good on you, PVE. Youโre right about the weather, too. I even had a hot chocolate in the afternoon because it was so cold and miserable.
Pol.
Certainly feeling cold now – a real drop in the temperature over the last couple of days with snow on the higher fells around here!
Friday was a lovely crisp and sunny day and had a lovely 5 mile walk with my regular walking group but today after a bright sunny start the cloud cover and the inevitable drizzle happened from lunch time!
Hope all those who celebrate Thanksgiving had a great time with family and friends
@mixnmatch – Happy Maintenanceversary to you ๐ท My first year celebrating this milestone is on the 7th of December and in January I will have been following this WOL for 2 years!!!!!!
@pollypenny – You are right in that Rugby Union has been great this weekend but not for my homeland of Australia ๐ although they are doing a bit better in Rugby League and in the first Ashes Test! Must say I loved Tonga’s never giving up attitude in their match against England….that last 7 minutes of play – they nearly caused a big upset!
@purple-vegie-eater – good job in creeping back into your wriggle room!
I’m staying focused until the end of the month as my goal of getting a few lbs below target weight before I head south to visit friends is on schedule (53.7kg this morning), but any extra wriggle room will be most welcomed as there is always a lot of socialising involved – meals out and lots of ๐ฅ๐ทso definitely need that wriggle room!!!!
Iโm going to see “Suburbicon” tonight โ it does get mixed reviews but our film group like to see films that challenge a bit and certainly we often sit in the cinema discussing the film for several minutes when everyone else has leftโฆโฆโฆ.
Remember that “Food, Like Your Money, Should Be Working For You” ๐
Thanks all, particularly Pollypenny, I wasn’t careful enough with my celebrations and almost immediately hit my top of the range ‘trigger’ weight so am now being extra careful again. Still it must have mostly been carb bloat/water as I am down 7.6 pounds in three days since I caught it and started behaving myself again. It is just so difficult at this time of year to avoid high carb food so I am very thankful that the trigger weight is doing its job so quickly when I go off the rails.
Yes creeping seems to be the enemy doesn’t it! I had been creeping too for quite a while and found a food diary got me back on the straight and narrow again. It is hard this time of year but I love your recommendation AT of food must be working for us. That’s a great reminder to us all because it’s usually the food that doesn’t work for us that adds the weight.
Oh well, Tis the season to be jolly and what’s life without a bit of jollity! ๐พ๐ซ๐
Oh, Pve, here you are being so jolly and leaving me nostalgic about the last time we hanged a witch here in New England! Naughty girl.
Let’s be sure that the Holly-Jollies don’t leave us being Jiggly-Wiggly by January. As always, my weight has crept up a few notches and is harder to un-glue. Someone suggested that it is Vitamin D deficiency as the Northern Hemisphere goes into the darkness. Interesting idea. Yet those of you in the Southern H are talking about it too. Is there anything to it?
Not sure my food is working for me at this time….
Hope you are all having a jolly week-end. We pressed some more cider today [1 gallon] but did not cut down the Christmas tree yet. Have begun the cookie baking. Must mail them in 10 days.
Ah! The good old days๐๐ Some traditions are worth keeping๐๐
Mr P suddenly decided he needed to fast today…health reasons. ..but I had my mind set on some lovely food. I’ve been SO cranky all day. Ended up making myself a chicken and salad sandwich and 1/2 glass of wine ..I never eat sandwiches any more! ๐ But my mood lifted immediately โบโบ P
Something is amiss here on the Frontier, and its not a lack of witches. Both ODH and I gained weight since yesterday, without knowing a reason for it. Boo. Hiss. So today is a day without snacks; with a low calorie dinner [and wine!]; all in an 8-hour window, and we’ll see what that brings.
Tomorrow is a Fast Day but this calls for extra measures.
Well, Pve, it is all about health: for us and our spouses. But I know what you mean about having your heart set on some foods. Wasn’t the moon lovely last night? But for us it shone down on a frosty lawn as I made my way out to the barn to tuck the chickens in. No Southern oceans here.
Pol, glad life is treating you well. We feel good that we pitched in together to clear out a room in the cellar and take a truck-load to the dump. Work well done.
I love the universality of this thread!
As true full moon is today (4/12), how about everyone look to the sky tonight and capture the magic…then describe it.
For us, as it gradually rose out of the Pacific Ocean last night, the long sliver of silver gradually widened into a glimmering silver blanket across the ripples of the waves. The magic spread and spread as it danced on the surface. Awe inspiring.
I imagine on crisp snow it must be stunning too.
Have a good Monday fast when your turn comes. P ๐
Alas, we had total cloud cover last night, so full moon was obscured. I loved your idea about moon-watching Pve and also your lyrical description of the full moon over the ocean.
After being very strict with myself yesterday [normal Sunday breakfast then Fast Dinner of enchiladas with a tiny bit of beer], I dropped 0.9 pound. Todays Fast should keep the trend going — I hope.
Breakfast: Sprouted Bake [mung bean, egg, avocado]
Dinner: Senegalese Tuna Salad with Avocado
Hope your Fast is successful, Pol. I’m trying to get below Target and have 1.5 pounds to go. Sometimes those ‘last few pounds’ are the most difficult.
Carolann, are you ‘creeping’ in the right direction now?
So far so good. Two coffees, porridge, made with water then thinned with a bit of milk and a banana, a small apple. Just an oxo for a comfort drink.
Are we all getting a little complacent? Perhaps the desperation has gone as weโre not fat any more! In fact, I was called ‘You skinny thing!’ yesterday. I am not skinny.
PVE, I loved seeing the moon through the skeleton silhouette of our oak tree.
Purple, nothing to report sorry ๐. We’ve had some unusual weather lately and last night was a dull sky with no sign of a moon! ๐ Our youngest son is here from Canada and has brought a mate with him who’s never been to aus before. They’ve been going to the cricket and we’ve had the most disappointing weather. No sunny australia here in Adelaide this week! ๐
Fastingme I have stopped creeping thankfully! I just needed a reminder to kick that complacency in the butt!
Morning from snowy North Wales, folks. Iโve had an up and down week again! I know the problem – Iโm not drinking enough because itโs too cold to slug water as usual, resulting in transit problems. I was cheered today, though to be at bottom of wriggle room.
I canโt convince OH of the benefits of daily weighing. He did loose a pound this week, though. Heโs just togged himself up to trudge down the hill for the papers. These snow- bound days are no good for me; Iโll just read or knit. No calories burned!
The thread has gone quiet lately. Maybe weโre all happily maintaining.
Pol.
Hi All,
Itโs been a while. OH has had a health scare. Heโs fine, but the worry and stress has taken it out of me mentally and physically! And Iโve not had it in me to post (lurked a bit though ๐).
Polly,
We had snow on Thursday night, which froze leaving our untreated lanes like skating rinks. I had to take OH to the train station on Friday morning, no problem with winter tyres and taking it steady. Others were not so lucky though and weโve had general chaos with cars overturned and road closures.
Iโm hoping to have a tramp over the fields this afternoon, but itโs Christmas cards and knitting by the fire for me too ๐
On the plus side….! Weight maintenance has been quite easy recently. OH has discovered an interest in healthy eating, so thereโs even less temptation in the house than previously.
Greetings from snowy New Hampshire! 10 cm of fluffy white looks like Christmas to us. Our plowing neighbor has done his job and now our shoveling neighbor is at work.
Today is the town Christmas Pageant/Living Nativity on the Common in front of the church. Only the 2nd year for it, so we’ve never done it with snow on the ground. Should be OK and will look charming.
This has been a good week for weight: staying below Target. ๐ ๐
Today: wreaths and swags for the doors, maybe some cross-country skiing, and the Live Nativity. Since I’m the director I have to attend, and my ODH is Joseph.
Happy, I’m glad that your OH has become interested in staying healthy and that he is OK now.
Pol, there are teas which can promote transit which might be a nice warm sip for you in snowy Wales.
PVE, while we sit in front of our fireplace with snow on the ground, I will do my best to imagine swimming weather in December and I will probably fail.
Carolann, hope your weather has improved and that you have/had a good visit from your Canadian son.
I wonder what ever happened to Auriga who used to post here….
Interesting how the American roads are cleared, while we struggle. Our son lives in a cul de sac in Nw Jersey – no problem! Why can our councils not contract builders and gardeners to clear residential roads, then keep the plant for the main roads as they do in NJ?
America has it right in so many ways!
Glad to hear that your husband is over his scare, Happy. 5:2 is easier with 2, of course. I have my sneaky chocolate when OH is at rugby. Cancelled yesterday because of the snow, of course.
Second post @pollypenny I live in North Wales. We have had no snow today at all. We are close to the sea so that might be the reason. I too had noticed the thread was quieter than normal. I checked the spread sheet and there doesnโt seem to be as many people on it as there has been the last few months.
Hi Polly,
I think we struggle with extremes of weather at both ends of the scale (heat/ cold) because weโre a temperate climate and neither extreme heat nor extreme cold occur on a regular/ frequent basis. It is massively expensive and inefficient to invest in the infrastructure/ equipment you need for an arctic winter when in reality you might only get a weekโs worth of really extreme weather once every few years.
And there is of course a north/ south or maybe urban/ rural divide in the UK. Where we are in Cumbria we know to expect winter extremes (in fact last winter was unusual due to lack of frosts let alone snow!). So everyone not on a main route has winter tyres and snow chains! Again, if youโre in an area that rarely experiences poor winter driving conditions then you arenโt going to spend money on equipment you may never need.
And re: contracting builders and gardeners to clear streets. Again, if it happened every year I expect they would do. But in terms of emergency response, council workers will be working overtime to try and keep us moving; blame central government funding (or lack of!) and government procurement processes for the fact that local councils canโt quickly (or even at all) mobilise contractors….
They may be good at clearing snow in the US, but major infrastructure is left. We were horrified to see rusting bridges and buidings that have had no maintenance in years. Quite a shock.
All areas have their advantages and disadvantages. We all really operate best at 22 to 23 deg C with about 30 to 50% humidity.. Anything below 12deg or above 28deg, or too humid, does not suit the human condition. We adjust, but it is far from ideal.
Fasting is definitely harder when the body is cold…even a warm drink raises the temperature.
Dear Auriga. We “oldies” miss her…along with Elaine, Bay, Fast and Heraj (to name a few) I hope life is treating them well.
Cheers P
Fast is still here…youโve smoked her out, P! Just been a bit full-on lately – my Mum died at the end of October (sad, but blessed release, overdue after some years of dementia and other health problems, and very peaceful, after only a few daysโ final infection, which I was able to spend with her, so actually relieved and grateful) and now sorting affairs as executor – but still lurking, still sending thoughts (especially to OHs coping with health scares and maintainers coping with snow) but maintaining well, and hoping to create another couple of lbsโ worth of wriggle room pre Christmas. Iโll post Christmas greetings to all later, and hope to be back properly in the New Year. You donโt get rid of me that easily!
Best to all…back soon…x
