  • Hi Everyone!

I’m starting the 5:2 on Monday. I’ve wanted to lose weight for a while but not got round to it. I’m currently 12.5 stone and 5’10. At the beginning of 2013 I was 9.5 stone and very toned from going to the gym a lot but the weight has gradually snuck back on. I’ll be happy at 10 stone so that’s my goal. I am going to fast Monday and Thursdays but try to eat healthier other days, I go to the gym most days already but haven’t boticed mych difference (probably because of christmas!)

I’m sure I’ll want to give up soon so will be back for support soon! Wish me luck! And best of luck to anyone else starting on Monday!

I am starting next week also. Just waiting for the book to arrive from Amazon – can’t wait. All the best.

Hello, I´m starting on Monday as well, I´ve chosen Mondays and Thursdays (preliminary) as fast days, and then I´ll see if those days work out for me. I´m 156 cms and I weigh 76 kgs at the moment, and my first goal is 10 %, and then I´ll take it from there!

Starting Monday too. Fingers crossed indeed. My initial goal is to lose the 2 stone I’ve put on in the last 6 months while recovering from surgery.

I’m a newbie too! Here’s to our first week! Wishing you all success and positivity

Hi starting Monday too! about 12lbs to loose would be good! Just worried about feeling shaky and sick from hunger!

Hi! I started doing 5:2 last summer, but lost my way during December. I’ve just watched the Horizon programme again and re-read the book to motivate me to start again on Monday. This is the best and only way to eat. (I say this after struggling with food since being a teenager!) It takes a little bit of getting used to, but after the first couple of fasts it becomes much easier. Don’t worry and don’t give up. It’ll be great having each other as support. 🙂

Me too, startig on Monday, have 3 stone to lose aaaahhhh

    Hi all,

Starting Monday too!!! Quite excited to start feeling better in myself again! Since being in a new relationship, I’ve someone how put on nearly 2 stone and need to shed this!!!! I’ve chose my fast days as Monday and Wednesday! Will eat a small breakfast and a clean healthy dinner at 4pm for these fasting days, obviously sticking to 500 calories and drinking plenty of water, i’ve found drinking lots of water should prevent headaches and sicky feeling!!!! Am i right in thinking on the other 5 days its healthy clean eating ??? Any advice is really welcome 🙂 xx

Hi, I’m another newbie starting on Monday – fast days Mondays and Wednesdays (for now). Wish everyone lots of luck going forward. Keen to read all the posts too.

Hello, I tried this diet before xmas. As a test to see what I needed to do. Well today is my day one. I found out that I needed to space my food out during the day. So this means eating something at breakfast. Today sugar puffs no milk. Home made carrot and onion soup with oxo cubes. Plus half a can of rice pudding, half a drained can of peaches. For myself this will do. As I cannot stand cooking on fasting days. It is a case of trial and error to see what suits you during fasting times. Hence trying this diet before xmas. Just be patient and see what works for you. Good luck.
I seriously need to shed one to two stones in weight at least. So here goes.

Good luck and happy new year to all.

@lucylocket: I´m going shopping tomorrow for some healthy snacks and stuff. I´ve used today writing down some ideas for my fast days and also for the other days so I don´t overcompensate :D. I also checked out the mayo clinic´s tdee calculator, which came in 150 cals lower than on this site, and for now I´m going for a goal between the two, so I´ve slightly lowered my tdee for the normal days.

Really good to hear from so many other people starting too. Looking forward to hearing about peoples progress and tips as we go along!

Hi I am starting either tomorrow or Tuesday . I would have preferred Monday but have a dinner to go to Monday evening. Really looking forward to this. I am approx 12:9 and want to drop down to 12 initially and see how it goes from there. I am 5.7. I will prob decide to drop down to 11.10 if my face is ok. It can sometimes show on my neck if I go too low. I am 52 and went off HRT last June as it was not suiting me. I had to stop my morning walk as I was hot from menopause and the weather was very hot too. But I am improved now so have started back walking again as weather is cooler too. I have a habit of wine with dinner which has got a little out of control since August when I was told my brother had 6 months to live. I have always loved wine, only with dinner but I can see how my new status of post menopause and wine in the evening is making the lbs creap up. I also nibble after dinner and that extra chocolate, although dark, is not helping and recently I have added crisps!!! So altogether it is getting out of control. I have noticed how I am quite wheezy at times and instead of walking for an hour I am only doing 30 mins.. So it’s time now to STOP and change things to stay healthy. I am taking back control of myself and my life. So going to start the day with a walk, then an egg either scrambled or an egg and spinach omelette. I will make a chunky veg soup only using low Gi ingredients so no carrots or potatoes. Lots of water and herbal teas and a chicken stir fry for dinner. That is my plan. I will weigh and measure myself tomorrow or Tuesday morning and begin. I think maybe Tuesday could be better as I will be back working and can stay busy to keep my mind off food. Tomorrow being Sunday could be harder but I will decide either tonight or in the morning. Maybe tomorrow as I am a now person and like to start things as soon as I make up my mind. Excited, little scared as this is my first time doing anything like this since I am post menopause and quick steady results are what have motivated me in the past so I am hopeful I can do this now.

Maria211081 I am interested to know how much weight you dropped down before December ?

Starting on Monday too! Got at least 2 stone to loose.

Starting monday too! 4 1/2 stone to loose

    HELP!!!!
im looking to start this on monday and not really sure how it works or what foods are best for fast days and how many calories for each day…..

I’m also not drinking at all in Jan, I hope that this combined with 5:2 or even a couple of weeks with 4:3 will kick start things nicely. I’m not back at work until the 17th so thats my first goal!

I’m going to start Monday also. Im from the US and have no idea what stones mean. We use pounds, but I wish us both well. Hope I can post success soon. I’m excited about this forum I have never been on line like this before!

I’m a newbie to this as well. Will be doing my fast days on Tuesdays and Thursdays as I will be at wrk and busy, so less tempted to snack. I haven’t properly weighed myself yet or take measurements, but I’m roughly around the 12 stone mark, and 5.3. Hoping to lose around 10lbs.
I’m currently today doing a trial run!!! My last meal last night was at around 6.30pm plus some picky snacks.
So since waking up this morning at 6.30 am I have had 2 boiled eggs it’s now 5pm.. It was very easy this morning didn’t feel hungry in the slightest, plenty of coffee, tea and herbal tea. Since having the boiled eggs I am experiencing some hunger pangs, not painful or anything but slightly uncomfortable. I can definitely feel the difference from what I thought was hunger and how I feel now. I can honestly say that I’m am soo looking forward to my dinner later. Hope I can make it through the day, and good luck to everyone for your starts..

When I started this diet before xmas the one thing I did notice was the weight drop even after one day. For myself I would expect to lose approx 4 pounds per week. As long as I can stay to this diet. With living alone it is a little difficult as I do not have anyone or anything to take my mind off food. Sort of struggling a little now today. Day one. For myself today I do not think I am in the correct frame of mind for this. Still I will try to keep to the cal limit today. If I have to go over the limit then I will add a warm roll to the soup for dinner tonight. Sort of ate and drank too much at xmas.
Also feeling very cold doing this diet again. Hence not continuing with this diet over xmas. For myself I think this will be a continuing trial and error to find the correct balance,
    Lynette J

Hi Lynette, and welcome to you and all of you newbies:

May I suggest you may not be in the correct frame of mind for a diet if you believe you can lose four pounds a week. If you think that is what the diet should deliver, you will quit quite quickly when it does not deliver that performance.

The average weight loss on 5:2 over time is about a pound a week. You might lose four pounds a week if you eat no food at all, week after week, but I doubt you can/will want to do that.

Please reconsider your weight loss goals and decide whether losing about a pound a week is worth your time. Here are some tips if you choose to go forward: https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/the-basics-for-newbies-your-questions-answered/. Number four will explain why four pounds a week is unrealistic. For everyone else, the thread will answer most of your questions.

    Good Luck!

Thanks I agree I am not in the correct fame of mind at the moment for this diet. But I will still go and read the basics topic’s. Probably for myself New Year may not be the ideal time to start this diet.I am thinking this diet may not be for me. Unsure. I have done Weight Watchers in the past and got to my ideal weight. So I do know that I can do it as and when I want to. Just timing.

Thanks for the advice and link up.

    Lynette J

    To simcoeluv

Thanks and I mean this for the link to the newbies basics. This made sense, as this will be a little more easy now I have read this. I think losing 1 pound a week would be ok. Cutting down the cal intake this I can do.

    Lynette J

Hi thanks for link to advice, I am expecting to lose 1-2lb a week, just give up on other diets as i think banning certain foods makes you want them more! I just suffer sometimes with feeling shaky and sick if I dont eat for a while so need to get over this for the diet to work, going to try for early breakfast and small dinner!

I think I must get out some smaller plates. Smaller dinner, and cutting out the large pudding at lunch time will be a breakthrough. I will swap the lunch pudding with fruit or rice pudding, yoghurt. I will have to only have half the dessert portion with dinner on an evening. Stay off the wine too. If I lose weight then I will be pleased. Getting the balance right for me is the key. I get icy cold on this diet.

    Lynette J

with my pletaphora of health issues I´d be thrilled with 1 pound a week, that would make nearly 2 kgs a month! I picked this because it looks like something I could actually do long term, even during other treatments and such. Plus I figure if I have a real bad week and only do 1 day of fasting it´ll be easier to get back to two the next week if I feel better. Only thing is I´m not great on fruit, but I figure I could buy some frozen berries without breaking the bank, as long as they´re no sugar, right?

    Hi Charlotta and welcome:

5:2 is a calorie based diet, not a food type based diet.

That means there is no requirement to eat, or not eat, any particular foods.

So don’t worry about fruit – if you don’t like fruit, don’t eat fruit!

    Good Luck!

Hi , I am starting Monday too! I am 15 stone 8 at 5 foot 10 and am in dire need of a change of life style. I am 40 this year. I can’t be fat and 40. My old self will never forgive me if I don’t change now.

I think this diet is good as it is not banning any food item. For myself tonight I am changing dinner as I do not feel like soup again. I have been looking at Great British Chefs website for some low cal meals. Some look good. I am sort of pleased now I am past my danger time of 6pm. As I always get dinner around 7pm. If I do not eat later on tonight then I will have reduced my cal intake today by about 2000+ cals. For myself this will be great. I will later have a skimmed milk hot chocolate before I go to bed. If I am being honest then it may be more like a reduction of 3000+ cals, xmas has added to this. I want to get to aged 50 next year at least one stone lighter.

    Lynette J

I am also starting this diet on Monday I have struggled with my weight all my life I have been as low as 8st 13lbs but this was about 28 years ago. I am now in my 50’s and would like to lose 3 stone in time for summer I hope this is the diet that will help me achieve my goal.

Sounds like my sort of weight problem. Sort of crept up after my periods finished. Sort of having to change my diet and figure out how many cal’s I can eat now. So this diet is good as I will only have to do it two days a week. Just looking forward to roast beef, carrots, boiled potatoes tomorrow. I will not have the goose fat potatoes.I will still have a dessert with dinner. But will not have one at lunch time, only fruit. Now feeling really warm as I went icy cold for about three hours this afternoon. Now for the big test no munchies this evening. So I must find something to do. Thanks for the support today.

    Lynette J

I am starting next Monday or Tuesday. I have 3 1/2 stone to lose but am really interested in the other health benefits of fasting too. With an average of 1 pound a week I hope to be 52 pounds lighter this time next year. Good luck everybody.

Slimline Carsie – I did 5:2 for three months (September, October, November) and lost 11lbs 🙂

My December was seriously disastrous, so I’m looking forward to starting again on Monday! My biggest challenge is sugar/chocolate/carb cravings on non-fast days, so I’m taking this weekend to prepare myself and my fridge for making a really good start again.

I am also starting Monday so wishing all of us good luck!! Have two stone to lose by May for a wedding!

Hi Lynette J, Nurse-Rachett, Charlotta, cazy and all others posting on this thread,

Welcome and looks like you’ve started and excellent ‘New Year Newbies’ support thread for yourselves. Best of luck with your 5:2 adventures.

I’ve only been doing this (consistently) since July last year. I did stop and start during the previous 2 years, since the original tv programme by Michael Mosley. I’ve only weighed myself twice in that time: once at the start and then 4 months later in Nov. At the 2nd weigh in, I had lost 12lb/5kg. Up to present, I have dropped one and a half dress sizes.

That was just a bit of background. I just wanted to echo what @simcoeluv has said: set realistic weight goals. Please don’t set yourselves up for disappointment as (it’s human nature) one is then so likely to chuck it in.

Think of 5:2 not as a journey from A to B in a straight line but as a delightful ramble via the scenic route.

Read as much as you can. There is tons of info/ ideas etc on this website (inc simcoeluv’s Basics for Newbies thread.) I understand that an updated edition of Michael Mosley and Mimi Spencer’s book is coming out soon. I will repost the link to Michael’s documentary (and the one on exercise if you’re so inclined …)

However, one of the most frequent comments on this forum is also how adaptable 5:2 is to individual tastes and temperaments – I guess that’s what I mean by ‘the scenic route’. There probably is a ‘best’ way to implement this Way of Eating; and maybe one day all the research will have been completed and we’ll know what that way is (if you believe that … haha) Meanwhile, regard it as a process as much as a timetable.

At one time I was so concerned about my own overeating that I went to Overeaters Anonymous (although I decided in the end it wasn’t for me). One expression from that group has stayed with me, though: “Easy does it; but DO it.”

I hope some of this has been helpful to some of you( and you are not all shouting ‘Pass the sickbag’!!)

    All the best
    Bootsy

I think for myself I am looking at the long term health benefits. This means maintaining a good blood sugar level. Plus keeping my cholesterol level to what it should be. If I do not do something about this weight gain then I fear that my blood sugar, cholesterol will shoot up. Any way by getting my weight down this will also have long term health benefits. Meaning healthy going into older age. As I do not and will not go into a size 20 clothing. For myself this would effect how I am feeling about me. I also do not want to lose any ability to walk and must keep mobile in older age. Hence I must do something to reduce this weight gain.
I am not sure of the health benefits of fasting. But for myself it is making sure that I get some fruit into my system. Thus re educating my body to a more healthy food intake. If I do not do something then my doctor will only mention something at some stage. By writing these post today I am keeping off the sweets and other snacks. So many many thanks to all who have helped today. I have only to get to about 11pm then get some hot chocolate and a biscuit. This would mean a massive reduction in cals today.
    Lynette J

Hi, I’m starting on Monday too. I’m currently weighing in at 11st 6 and 5″5. My goal is 10st, 28inch waist. This time last year I was that size and very fit, then I met my fiancée and got ‘comfortable’ haha. Getting married early July, so got 6 months to shape up and trim down 🙂

I am on this diet as I am not going to hit 50 next year at this weight.
LindseyMay you will have to be careful what size of wedding dress you buy. Difficult one this. Congrats on getting married this year.

    Lynette J

Thank you, Bootsy Badger, for your warm welcome and encouragement – much appreciated! Best wishes on your scenic ramble too! (Great analogy!)

Not sure but think I read that the 2 days fasting should be consecutive days

    Hi Lisa,
The 5:2 is a way of life rather than a quick fix. It is flexible and some choose to consecutive days to fast, although there are many that need a break in between.I have done both but prefer a break. What ever you choose to do, it is flexible and you can change days to suit.

There is lots of information in the FAQ’s.

To Lisa R. I tried fasting on consecutive days before xmas. This did not work for me.
Fasting I think is meant to be fit it with you. Any day you choose.
I do this diet better when spacing out the fasting. Doing consecutive days it was worse than going to the dentist. Having to think on how to get through the two days. Plus feeling icy cold too. Yesterday it was a lot more easier. I am looking forward to roast beef today. Normal food day, back to fasting tomorrow. Body temp good today.
    Best of luck
    Lynette J

Last Christmas party yesterday, now raring to go!! Taking it easy dietwise today, going to stock up on sparkling water and lime juice. Then meal plan for this week, exciting times! Good luck everyone for your first days, keep positive!

I think it is difficult on any diet in the first few weeks. Feeling better about doing this diet. Pleased I stuck to it yesterday.

    Lynette J

I dont think of it as a diet at all, as for five days a week you eat normally, just two days of inconvenient restriction!.Sugar addicts will suffer more than others, but now i have given it up, i can drink as much tea as i want. I have done the 5:2 before, i gave it up after a month, but a change of strategy now eating two not three meals should help. For those wanting to lose weight fast, you will have to cut down calories on the non fast days, the problem with that for me is i end up thinking about food all the time. Now i need to lose 4 1/2 stone, so for me its a massive task, but i need to accept that i have a year doing this before i can move on to 6:1 like micheal

I have been doing 5:2 for a year- done loads of diets before but never lost much. I can still lose huge amounts even after 1 year- can’t praise this diet enough- I have gone from 13 stone to 10 stone 11. The first few weeks were hard- and then my stomach shrunk and I started to see results. Had to change my wardrobe tho!!! Best of luck and well done for deciding to do something positive xxx

So today I went shopping and filled up on “better choice” items. I bought blueberries as well, will add those to jogurt for breakfast, but mostly veg and some easy protein like chicken and rabbit and fish. Good luck everyone!

I dont want to sound too new agey and weird but on impulse a couple of months ago i picked up with out looking at it a just returned book at the library called The Magic by Rhonda Byrne.
In short its a mental training book to help you appreciate what you’ve got, to stop negative thinking and promotes positive thought through counting your blessings.
I read the book, and did the very basic exercise of counting my blessings every day, and boy does it work!. So i have re-borrowed the book and plan this time to implement the 28 day programme to coincide with the start of the 5:2 plan. I dont know about you, but lets face it,its not a physical thing its a mental one that causes us to abuse ourselves.By allowing myself to become over 60lb overweight is abuse fair and square!.
Im hoping that i will be able to stop associating dieting with negative thoughts and replace them with possessive ones.I will let you know how i get on!
